  1. JAL says:

have a feeling this on will not end 2-1

  2. Jandy says:

OK so what is your prediction?

  3. theplanisworking says:

    Ask Milo!

  4. theplanisworking says:

    Great win in Game 1.
    Great game, too.

Lets hope Mr. Crumpton gives us a good outing.

  5. tdb1977 says:

I have a bold prediction. At the end of this game – the Pirates will hold a 1.5 game lead in the NL Central and the Cardinals will be wondering what happened. Mad chaos will ensue the city after taking the first 3 games of this series.

  6. theplanisworking says:

Oh, and 600 posts on the game 1 thread.
    400 on the Morning thread.

    Still this game to go.
    Gotta love it.

And, I would like to thank the same 10 posters for doing the heavy lifting. ;)

  7. Jon says:

What pitchers are available for the Pirates in game 2?

  8. Jandy says:

my arms are still holding up ;)

  9. Jandy says:

JAL is the one posting, I’m asking him ;)

  10. theplanisworking says:

Hold the fort…….. Hippo returns later.

  11. Karen22 says:

    Yeah, Baby!!

  12. Karen22 says:

Hope my wine holds out…or I do!

  13. Karen22 says:

If we make it to September, we’ll have 1,000 post threads!

  14. theplanisworking says:

  15. tdb1977 says:

I broke into a beer in the 10th inning and sent a message to my wife…I had to break into this to curb the stress from game one. Do we have any hard stuff for game 2?

  16. Jandy says:

    hurry back!

  17. Jandy says:

I had to wait for hubby to get off e-bay to get on here lol.

  18. Brandie says:

Hold onto your undies folks…it’s gonna get interesting!

  19. Only ones whose arms haven’t fallen off.

  20. Nate83 says:

Amazing game one. Really awesome to see two teams come with one reliever after the other and each one had great stuff. I didn’t realize the Cards had such a deep pen. Really went toe to toe with our pen. I’m just glad we came out on top because that game could have went either way.

  21. Jandy says:

  22. Jandy says:

  23. Nate83 says:

Anybody know much about the Cards starter Tylor Lyons???

  24. Jandy says:

  25. Brandie says:

    Bring on the Kool-Aid!!!!

  26. Jandy says:

Nice top of the first. :)

  27. Brandie says:

    Good vibes to ya, Revvie.

  28. tdb1977 says:

At least 24 outs to go in game 2 for Pirate pitchers.

  29. Jandy says:

    Bacon Kool Aid it is!!!

  30. Jandy says:

    Nice 2 bagger by Jordy!

  31. Forgot to share this with everyone, but during the first game of the Pirates-Gnats game, my brother in law asked my 6 year old daughter if she wanted to dot he dot-to-dot that was in the first pitch type program that everyone hands out before the games now a days. She took one look at it and said “no because that isn’t the right mascot.” It was the Gnats’ mascot. Got her trained already to root for the Buccos.

  32. And ya ‘all, as we say in the mid-south.

  33. Brandie says:

Ladies and gentleman, these are not the same old Pirates! Even in the losses, they have been in the mix. I was so excited by the win, I found myself screaming in my basement as I finished lifting weights. Twenty plus years of frustration, just about half of my life, could finally begin to be wiped away. Makes me believe anything is possible.

Happy to be here. Good vibes to all!

  34. Patrick(ri) says:

    Jordy doesn’t like pine.

  35. tdb1977 says:

Put up a big number in the first inning and run away and hide in game 2. Just like last night. Put up a nice number and just go with the flow.

  36. Jandy says:

    smart girl :)

  37. Tom P. says:

My guess is that Cumpton pitches 5, Gomez pitches 3, and the ninth is pitched by Melancon if the Pirates are ahead or by Black if they are not.

DK: No chance Melancon pitches twice in the same day. Almost no chance Black pitches in a tight game, given how poorly he fared last night.

Tony Watson will be the key.

  38. Let’s go Cutch – no more strikeouts! Hit the ball!

  39. Brandie says:

Oh Yeah! (As the Kool-Aid Nan wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates costume crashes through the wall.)

  40. tdb1977 says:

He hit it, but right at the second baseman :(

  41. Jandy says:

I was screaming too lol. Poor Pitt Bull hid behind the couch.

  42. Jandy says:

I can just see it! lol

  43. Walks and errors are never good, especially when they should have been out of the inning.

  44. Jandy says:

That should have been a DP

  45. Brandie says:

The name Revvie has a good story behind it. My husband was raised as a Methodist. There was a Pastor, Pastor Marden. He worked with Pastor Harper, who performed the marriage ceremony between hubby and me.

When Pastor Marden was starting out in the 1970’s, he was if the mind that he wanted to be approachable to all age groups. He encouraged the teenagers to early 20 something’s to find a name for him instead if Pastor or Reverend Marden. The kids decided on “Revvie Baby”. Pastor Madden liked it a lot.

Sometime afterward, Reverend Marden was walking through town with the bishop when he heard one if his parishioners shout “Revvie Baby! Revvie Baby!” from across the street. Needless to say it was a very interesting moment.

Revvie fits you because to call you Pastor Lucky or Reverend Lucky makes you sound like you should be doing drive through weddings in Las Vegas! :-)

  46. Jandy says:

    Good job Cumpton!

  47. tdb1977 says:

Yesterday, I was down in the Strip District with my wife and my folks to do a little shopping and to have lunch. Went to lunch at Pamela’s. As we were getting settled in, a person came in. My wife kicks me under the table and asks, is that Gerrit Cole that just came in. I look over my shoulder as he walks behind us. I tell her, I think it is but I’m not sure. I look back down at the menu to not look like an @$$ or anything. He walks back behind us again and I get a second look. I’m pretty sure it is at this time. I pull out the phone and pull up the At Bat up and look at the Pirates roster. I look at it, and glance over my shoulder, and sure enough…it is Mr Cole. Long story short, he gets his meal and we get our meal. He finishes up and walks up to the register to pay. He looks suspiciosly over at my wife, who is facing out towards the dining room. She said, you could tell he was trying to figure out if we knew who he was as she was sitting there with a Pirates shirt on and I had a Pirates hat on. He pays and heads out. This time, looking again at us and gives a small smirk while passing by. I don’t think anyone else in there knew who was having lunch. I wonder what he would have done if I had on a Cole jersey on. We didn’t want to be jerks and go up and bother him while he was having lunch. Just thought it was pretty neat and wanted to share.

DK: Here’s hoping no one was filming what the young man was eating.

  48. Patrick(ri) says:

Those soccer fans can really sing.

  49. Tom P. says:

I forgot about Watson. I said Melancon because he only threw 7 pitches, but I think you are right.

  50. Patrick(ri) says:

+111 for the way you two handled it.

  51. JHay!! nice rope. Get Tabby in from 3rd!!

  52. Jandy says:

  53. I thought for sure having Jay Bell as the hitting coach would help improve the horrible bunting this team does.

    DK: … come on, Steve!

  54. Patrick(ri) says:

Do not know why they play this guy – he obviously cannot hit major league pitching.

  55. Jandy says:

  56. Patrick(ri) says:

    Diaster on the bases, too.

  57. Nice to take advantage of their mistakes. 1-0 good guys and a guy still on third. Come on Marte bring him in!

  58. Jandy says:

    Cards having major issues.

  59. Brandie says:

    Awesome story. :-)

  60. Patrick(ri) says:

Credit to the lunatic who said the Cardinals would regress.

  61. Milo Hamilton says:

    That makes me happy.

  62. Like last time Jordy.

  63. Smart person. I was thinking the same last night. They were playing at sucha high win rate earlier, that they had to come back to Earth a little bit. Hopefully they can keep losing – especially to the Bucs!

  64. Brandie says:

Good! I get do suck and tired if hearing about the Cardinals way and how good they are. Obviously, they have flaws and weaknesses too.

  65. Patrick(ri) says:

Jay Hay stole home this year at Indy. Go for it while the Cards are in disarray.

  66. Brandie says:

Should say I get so sick and tired…Auto Correct!

  67. JohninOshkosh says:

I tried to push the cause last thread, Dejan. Landed with a thud.

  68. Jandy says:

Me too Milo…and Brandimal, I get tired of it too, they suck! lol

  69. Jandy says:

So, since when did Cutch start playing the entire outfield?

  70. Patrick(ri) says:

What an outfield. Could have caught that twice.

  71. Jandy says:

  72. Jandy says:

    Nice, Cumpton!

  73. JUST did it, so hopefully something shows up soon.

  74. JohninOshkosh says:

Good story. I have to laugh. My wife knows so little about baseball, I’m not sure she would recognize Derek Jeter! Kudos to your better half !

  75. JohninOshkosh says:

    Good man !

  76. Jandy says:

  77. Me from earlier this month doing the Zoltan Z on top of Mt. Washington – New Hampshire.

  78. Bob Hasis says:

We don’t need to trade for anyone. Just use the guys we have and let them play.

Go ahead AP – make my day!!!

  79. Fake Pedro looks either tired or drunk.

  80. Bob Hasis says:

Just got home from Light Up night here in Pleasant Hills. Had my 3year old grandson, so I missed the climactic ending of Game One, and the start of this one.

But I see my boys are turning up the heat. HEH, who didn’t know that would happen

  81. Dom says:

I don’t think he has had a day off in a while.

  82. Jandy says:

Hey Bob, good game 1 :)

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ve gotten lit up once or twice, but never in Pleasant Hills.

  84. Patrick(ri) says:

I think every pitching coach from Pittsburgh to Bradenton should get a Christmas Bonus. Well earned for the phenomenal way so many of the young arms perform when they make it to the majors. There is more than raw talent and Ray Searage behind this performance.

  85. JohninOshkosh says:

    Light Up?

    Pro marijuana rally ?

  86. tomp says:

he looks like the bus forgot to pick him up.

  87. Karen22 says:

LOL! Son (and I) have seen many Pirates in the Strip…Fort, Grilli, Jonsey…They’re always down there. Bucs are very “inconspicuous” AND approachable…I got a wink from Fort…and I’m old enough to be his Mommy.

  88. Jandy says:

  89. Jandy says:

    + many

  90. Arriba Wilver says:

  91. Patrick(ri) says:

I hope Molina is OK. He is one of the reasons I pay to watch MLB. Beating the Cards w/o him will seem a bit hollow and the games less exciting.

  92. Arriba Wilver says:

I hope he’s OK, too. But ain’t no hollow wins against the Cards. This isn’t the 2010 Bucs.

  93. Patrick(ri) says:

+ 1. I did say “a bit hollow,” but I stand by the “less exciting,” as he has to be a top 5 player.

  94. Thundercrack says:

Well we don’t think he has an innings limit.

Does he have a pancake limit?

  95. JRay3 says:

Seems as Cumpton pitches better for the Pirates than he does even for Indy. Solid five innings turned in thus far.

  96. twentytwo22 says:

Another strong 5 inning start from Cumpton. Big decision for Hurdle. The offense could help them both out.

  97. Dom says:

Enough with the bunt attempts marte

  98. Jandy says:

    Trip, trip, triple for Marte!

  99. Marte Parte!!! Man on thrid no out – get him in!!

  100. Dom says:

I thought it was gone. Triple for sterling. See what happens when you swing away and not bunt

  101. Jandy says:

  102. twentytwo22 says:

Jordy hit the snot out of that one. RISP hit.

  103. Nice hit Jordy – didn’t try and kill it and look what happens – a hit to drive in the 2nd run. 2-0 Bucs!

  104. Patrick(ri) says:

We don’t need no stinkin sac flies!

  105. JohninOshkosh says:

Alex Rios fouled a ball off his foot and left the Chi/Cleve game in the 8th inning.

  106. Dom says:

Here’s a message from Jordy: ok

  107. Brandie says:

1-0 Good guys! I’m overwhelmingly underwhelmed. (That’s for you, Plan)

  108. Jandy says:

  109. Dom says:

    4-0 good guys.

  110. Cutch with a tworu n shot after Holliday probably dropped the ball over the fence – Thank you!!! 4-0 Bucs!

  111. Jandy says:

    I have friggin goosebumps :)

  112. JRay3 says:

Cutch puts an exclamation point on this inning! Cards unraveling a bit now.

  113. Dom says:

    Off of Holidays glove

  114. pattonbb says:

    You can’t stop Andrew McCutchen……

  115. Milo Hamilton says:

… assisted by #7, Matt Holliday.

  116. Thundercrack says:

I hope Tony LaRussa is watching these games

  117. Bounced off the heal of his glove and kept going over the wall.

  118. JRay3 says:

Seems like the way the team has played in these first three games they are telling management they don’t need any help.

  119. The rook is coming undone now, and Gaby gets a hit to keep it going.

  120. Brandie says:

Overwhelm me! Ask and I shall receive.

  121. JRay3 says:

Milo you may just get your second half three game winning streak yet!

  122. JD says:

  123. Brandie says:

  124. JohninOshkosh says:

  125. JRay3 says:

The PNC crowd is electric tonight!

  126. Bob Hasis says:

They had fire engines from all over, EMS vehicles, police, It’s great for the kids. They are awe struck – just like the Cards

  127. Brandie says:

The Double Clutch Cutch! Yo Cardinals… STFD!

  128. JRay3 says:

Gaby Sanchez tags up from first, great hustle play as Bucs taking game to Cards tonight.

  129. Bob Hasis says:

I’m sorry I missed it, but vicariously I know you were enjoying it for me

  130. Patrick(ri) says:

    He a good baserunner. Impressive.

  131. Milo Hamilton says:

You are correct sir. Why stop there ?

  132. Brandie says:

    Single by the Gabster!

  133. Brandie says:

Wow! So good to be witness to this!

  134. Jandy says:

I gotta get some ZzZz’s guys…gonna turn this on upstairs…but shutting down the computer…keep the vibes flowing, loonies!!!

  135. Patrick(ri) says:

    Sleep well.

  136. Milo Hamilton says:

The last time the Pirates won as many as 3 in a row this late in the season (after game #100) was a 5 game streak from September 17-22, 2010. It raised their record to 53-98.

  137. SeanAY says:

Better than last year, when Neil Walker publicly whined when the Pirates didn’t get any help.

No, I’m never letting that go. Haha.

  138. Night Jandy! We’ll keep it going on this end.

  139. Bob Hasis says:

As has been said by many very wise people, “The best trades are the ones that never get made”!

This series has been very revealing about us IMHO

  140. Dom says:

    Harrison with a triple!!!!

  141. Milo Hamilton says:

They need to remove Holliday for his own safety.

  142. Come on BCumpt, get your first hit!

  143. Patrick(ri) says:

    Been a veritable Holiday.

  144. JD says:

Sean – what year did you graduate John Carroll?

  145. Patrick(ri) says:

He needs to go to the other league.

  146. Love the disgust in the redbird fans! BCumpt almost had that first hit, but rook lucked into that catch.

  147. JRay3 says:

He is a hazard out there. Read something today on defensive metrics that the Bucs defense has earned them two additional wins and the Cards defense has cost them five wins.

STL is not a good defensive ball club and without their bats they are being exposed.

  148. Bob Hasis says:

  149. That is how you don’t score from third with no one out. At least we still have the 4-0 lead.

  150. stickyweb says:

Best part of this whole game is we don’t have to hear Greg Brown call these triples. Well maybe that the 2nd or 3rd best part.

  151. Bob Hasis says:

CH has to let Cumpton go as far as is logical – as far as he can!

  152. Thundercrack says:

He needs to open his eyes

  153. JD says:

    I’m a bit older. Class of ’94.

  154. Dom says:

I don’t know about the rest of you but this is exactly how I thought Cumpton would pitch.

  155. likeabugonarug says:

I can only follow on Gameday. How is he looking? It seems like he still has good stuff. And definitely hasn’t thrown a lot of pitches.

  156. twentytwo22 says:

What a job by Cumpton. Breezed past his trouble point of 3rd time through the order.

    6 outs to go.

  157. Milo Hamilton says:

    Rosenthal says Peavy to Boston.

  158. JRay3 says:

In 8 games versus the Redbirds this season the Bucs have out scored St Louis 39-26 and are six outs from going 6-2 versus them, having already won 12 of last 17 against the Birds.

Good pitching can slow down good hitting, these first three games have showcased that.

  159. Patrick(ri) says:

Did not think he would remain so strong the 2&3 time around. Very impressive kid.

  160. JRay3 says:

Gaby with big RBI double and two hit night maybe that will quiet the naysayers a bit on him.

  161. SeanAY says:

Awesome! So many great memories of that place.

  162. Patrick(ri) says:

If i get seriously bored tomorrow, I will give a listen to the insane sports talk stations up here in the “nation” & get a read on local sentiment.

  163. Milo Hamilton says:

Looks like Jose Iglesias is headed to Chicago. They won’t need Alexei Ramirez anymore.

  164. Patrick(ri) says:

Damn. A sac fly. I was hoping for a historical record for a division- winning club.

  165. Dom says:

Rios exited the game with a foot injury.

  166. Patrick(ri) says:

This appears to mean Peavy every 5 days and Drew at short every day. A bad deal, on its surface.

  167. JRay3 says:

Well this is how you put the Miami series in the rear view mirror. Cards about to fall to 0-6 on their road trip with Cincy on deck.

  168. JohninOshkosh says:

His duet with Willie Nelson was unforgettable.

  169. Milo Hamilton says:

This could be a 3 way deal involving Detroit. Could Iglesias or Ramirez be headed to Detroit with Peralta about to be suspended for the balance of the season ?

  170. TJ says:

Bruise on his foot; nothing serious

  171. TJ says:

I’m thinking the Cards now know how the Pens felt against the Bruins.

  172. Karen22 says:

John Carroll??!! My old neighborhood. Grew up in Cleveland Heights. Son graduated from JCU in 2005. Daughter-in-Law in 2007.

  173. Karen22 says:

What an incredible day for Pittsburgh!! I’m all verklempt!! :)

  174. TJ says:

To all the girls I loved before

  175. Milo Hamilton says:

Iglesias is indeed going to Detroit as Biogenesis insurance.

  176. Karen22 says:

  177. TJ says:

Pirates have had more triples tonight that I think they’ve had sac flies all season

  178. 3 triples tonight for the Bucs. Keep it up! Foot on the throat.

  179. JohninOshkosh says:

Like you said, the suspensions hang over all of this.

Bud had to give the heads up to the teams. Otherwise, very unfair.

  180. likeabugonarug says:

Something else this team needs is someone we can trust to play 3rd to give Pedro a rest. Josh is probably our “best” option right now since Inge didn’t cut it, but don’t really trust him over there. Hopefully we could survive for 1 game.

  181. tdb1977 says:

I’m going to take the credit for all the triples tonight. I had my work league softball game today and for an mid-aged slow chubby man, I legged out a triple to bring home 2 runs today. It lead me to a 2-2 day with 4 runs driven in and 1 run scored.

  182. JohninOshkosh says:

  183. Milo Hamilton says:

    Peavy in post season – 9.2 IP / 19 H / 12.10 ERA.

  184. theplanisworking says:

    Its Drew.

  185. TJ says:

So all the white sox got was the pitcher from Detroit?

Haven’t looked to see where he ranks but man if thats all they got for Peavy they can’t be asking any where near for Rios or Ramirez

  186. TJ says:

Sorry just saw Garcia is an OF

  187. TJ says:

Russell Martin has spelled Pedro at 3B

  188. Thundercrack says:

What happened to Twitter Tuesday ?

  189. Milo Hamilton says:

Outfielder Avisail Garcia is going to Chicago but they’re saying more is involved.

  190. JohninOshkosh says:

No. I think it was Avisail Garcia, CF.

  191. JohninOshkosh says:

It’s another OF in the Sox fold. Cramping, Rios a bit. Gotta believe Rios goes.

  192. Karen22 says:

    Raise it!! Stunning!

  193. tdb1977 says:

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!! Bucs take the double header and move to 1.5 game lead in the central. Best record in baseball!!! 18 to go until 82. Great start by Cumpton tonight.

  194. Thundercrack says:

That dorky actor from “Dude Where’s My Car?” better not get anywhere near PNC Park this year

  195. Playoffs by 2012 says:

This has been a downright impressive day at PNC.
Lord only knows what will happen between now and first pitch on Wednesday.

    RAISE IT!!

  196. WIN!!! Raise the Jolly Roger Baby!!! See you tomorrow night.

  197. TJ says:

I am in shock; 17-4 through the first 3 games in this series. And one of those runs was a garbage run in the 9th last night. HOLY CRAP.

  198. likeabugonarug says:

The Bucs are now guaranteed to be in first place when July ends!

  199. TJ says:

Can we add Jerry Meals to that list?

  200. Milo Hamilton says:

    Happy Birthday Clint.

  201. Happy 56th Birthday, Clint!!!

  202. JRay3 says:

Behind seven shutout inning from Brandon Cumpton who earns his first major league win, a Cutch two run blast and three triples the Bucs sink the Cards 6-0 to sweep the double header and there was nooooooooooooo doubt about it,

With the win the Bucs are a SEASON BEST 22 above .500 at 64-42. They improve to 6-2 against the Cards and 13-12 in July. The Pirates hold a 1.5 game lead for the top spot in the Central and a 10 game lead for a playoff spot.

The Pirates will go for their fourth consecutive win tomorrow night when Jeff Locke takes the mound for the Pirates.

Like Cutch said – The Cardinals have to play us….Let’s Go Bucs!

  203. theplanisworking says:

I cannot believe we swept them!

    Great job by Cumpton !!!

  204. theplanisworking says:

I cannot believe we swept them!

    Great job by Cumpton !!!

  205. Karen22 says:

  206. TJ says:

No trades!! Look at that chemistry

  208. pattonbb says:

When you wake up tomorrow (hope everyone does) on the last day of July, your PBC will have the best record in baseball, and a 1.5 game lead over the second place Cardinals.

    ….fear the Bones….

  209. JohninOshkosh says:

Your 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates, Ladies and Gentlemen.

  210. TJ says:

Every day should be CH’s birthday

  211. tdb1977 says:

    +64 wins!!!

  212. blazer says:

Wow…Unbelievable day for the Buccos! And I won all three wagers from Playoff’s lines…WHOA! Get to see them on TV for the next two days so looking forward to that also.

  213. likeabugonarug says:

The thing I don’t like about that is both catchers are in the same game for most of the game. And I’d rather have an IF there than the main catcher.

  214. TJ says:

Cumpton made the Cards look like the Pirates of old.

  215. Eric Bowser says:

What a day for the Pittsburgh Pirates!

  216. Ghost says:

    Holy cow!
Was able to watch the first game on MLB Network. Thought I was getting lucky when I found the second game on an MLB Net. alternate channel. Watched all the way through the post/pre/bridge show, then the feed shut off right before the first pitch.

    So I took a nap.
    Just woke up. Too THIS!!

    Holy Cow!

  217. Karen22 says:

    TWO-TWO!! My favorite number!

  218. tdb1977 says:

I’m not sure if anyone watching the run differential or not, but the Pirates +63 now ranks 7th best in all of Major League Baseball.

  219. Karen22 says:

Wonderful game by the young man!! WONDERFUL!

  220. twentytwo22 says:

I like the phrase ‘high water mark’.

They pulled off a .500 July.

The Cardinals have been shutout 6 times this year 3 by the Pirates.

  221. Milo Hamilton says:

    From Norman Chad:

“When I go to sleep tonight, the Pittsburgh Pirates are going to have the best record in baseball. With any luck, I’ll never wake up.”

  222. Karen22 says:

    Seriously…Is this heaven?

  223. Vette60 says:

Wow. The Bucs are goin’ all the way, all the way, all the way, the Bucs are goin’ all the way this year!

Great wins tonight – followed along via game cast. Will try to tune in tommorrow night on the 4 letter from our family vacation. Folks will be at Thursday’s game – hopefully a rare 5 game sweep.

    Night all.

  225. TJ says:

  226. Lad9 says:

Either that or Iowa! Woo hoo!

  227. TJ says:

One of the other things I love; CH is the same after this game as he is after any other game.

  228. Lad9 says:

HBD Skipper. But on your birthday, we are the one who should be giving you presents and you just gave us two monsters. Thank you Skip.

  229. No, how about drive-thru weddings in KY?

  230. Brandie says:

    THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  231. TJ says:

If you have not seen it; you have to check out the highlights from the Miami/NYM game. Qualls did a nice face plant after doing a fist pump after a strike out. Good stuff.

  232. theplanisworking says:

    YES IT WAS !!!!!!!

  233. theplanisworking says:

    LuckyNIowa doesnt rhyme.

    Cornfield or not.

  234. Lad9 says:

It was great! Much like he face planted for the Buccos last year.

  235. John Lease says:

Tony Watson was not the key though, it was Cumpton.
