    Hi Frankie!!!

Give our love to your fellow inhabitants of Uranus.

  3. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Makes my job a helluva lot easier when I don’t have to hunt to find everyone’s “wagers”

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

    Line #1
Total STRIKEOUTS by Pirates batters in today’s game
    Line is 11.5

    Line #2
Total BATTERS FACED by Gerrit Cole in today’s game
    Line is 24.5

Please Note – All games must be considered official games in order for line(s) to be valid. Any postponement, cancellation, or suspension of game(s) will void line(s).

    GOOD LUCK!!!

69 Down, only 13 more to go!!

Anything is possible if a person believes
    Mark 9:23

    KEEP CALM & BREAK .500

  4. Lad9 says:

Will be optimistic and go under on line 1 and over on line 2. Both for 100. Thank you sir. Go Buccos!

  5. Bill Born says:

    100 on both lines, please

    Line 1 Under

    Line 2 Over

    Thank you!

  6. pattonbb says:

Frank Coonelly is an absolute genius!! Pirate fans should count their lucky stars that he’s here.

**Hey Frank, if you’re reading this, I sure could use some tickets behind home plate. I’ll be in town when the Cards come back to PNC. Thanks buddy!**

  7. steelercrazy says:

Josh Harrison has a career .647 OPS, but a .981 split when playing right field. Cue the Beatles’ “Revolution 9″ for his entrance song today.

  8. Frankie says:

    Line 1 over

    Line 2 over

    100 on each

  9. Bizrow says:

    Dear Frank

You are too successful and far, far too brilliant to stay in the burgh.

You should find another job to match your immense talents.

Please spread your ego somewhere else

    Sincerely, Biz

  10. Bizrow says:

    100 under line 1
    100 over line 2

    Thanks, Playoffs

  11. Stuart says:

Playoffs, give me 100 each on line #1 (Under) and Line #2 (Over).

    +100! Stuart

  12. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Can we please stay on topic today.

This blog isn’t about the ramblings on Frank Coonelly.
Or the MVP candidacy of Andrew McCutchen.

This blog is and has always been about what career minor leaguer needs to be FREED next.
    Focus people!

  13. Stickyweb says:

Playoffs, I’ll take OVER for 100 on each line today. Thanks.

  14. Dom says:

    LINE 1: 100 OVER!!!
    LINE 2: 50 UNDER!!!

  15. Lad9 says:

My humble apologies. You are so correct. Free Felix Pie!!! :)

  16. Patrick(ri) says:

Just checked the Weather Channel for gametime and there was a bright red “Flash Flood” alert stripe at the top — followed, no kidding, by an offer to “see friends at risk.” So, if the game gets boring . . . This might be too much fun for Hippo?

  17. Stickyweb says:

Playoffs, don’t forget we also need to run somebody out of town. Chawlie bought himself a few more days last night. With Inge gone, the Fort hurt and the offense actually scoring some runs recently, I think it comes down to your least favorite bullpen arm. So who’s on the next plane out of the Burgh people: Hughes, Mazarro, Morris? Someone else?

  18. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  19. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Should I invest in pitchforks & torches or tar & feathers?

  20. Jandy says:

    keep it going, Drewster!!!

  21. MarkV says:

    line 1 – 50 under
    line 2 – 50 over

    Beat ‘em Bucs

  22. SeanAY says:

The reluctance of anyone in the power structure to praise Lambo is really, really odd. It sounds like even Hurdle was taking an oddly quiet posture on the subject. That gives me some pause in calling for him to come up.

That said, I saw Sawchik’s picture of the line-up cards, and there is exactly one left-handed bat on today’s bench (Presley). It’d be nice if they could balance that out a LITTLE bit more.

  23. Stickyweb says:

Definitely tar & feathers. We’ve been using pitchforks & torches for 20 years now, I’m pretty sure we’ve completely exhausted the supply. We need some new instruments.

  24. Drew71 says:

This blog is also about my wife.

    Both for 50, please.

  41. Brandie says:

  42. Arriba Wilver says:

  46. pattonbb says:

    well played

  47. JRay3 says:

Good morning to the window from the left coast. Great day for the Pirates to make it 5 straight, earn a sweep and have a chance to move 4 games up in the division!

    Tough, interesting lines today.

    Line 1 – 50 on the UNDER

    Line 2 – 50 on the UNDER

    Thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  48. Milo Hamilton says:

Playoffs, as usual you are 100% right.

  49. Milo Hamilton says:

  50. Brandie says:

  51. Brandie says:

Got tickets to DSO front row at The State Theatre.

  52. Brandie says:

Meaning please spread your manure elsewhere!

  53. Brandie says:

I would like 25 on the under for each line, Mr. Playoffs, my love!

  54. Milo Hamilton says:

Jose Fernandez gives lots of people shoulder discomfort.

  55. JMB says:

    Line 1 = 100 on the UNDER
    Line 2 = 100 on the UNDER

  56. Jandy says:

    not to mention intestinal discomfort.

  57. Jason81 says:

    Line 1–100 on the UNDER.

    Line 2–100 on the OVER.

  58. Jandy says:

Tough line, Mr. Playoffs, you are devious, sir, devious! :D

I’ll go with 100 on the under for both lines, please.

    Thank you!

  59. blazer says:

I’ll take the under for both lines at 100 per please.

  60. pattonbb says:

    Line 1 – 100 UNDER
    Line 2 – 100 UNDER

  61. JaxBuc says:

Please sir, may I have 100 OVER for line 1 and 100 UNDER for line 2?

  62. theplanisworking says:

    Mr. Playoffs………….

May I please have the following…………..

Line 1 — 50 Drunk Frank Hippos on the UNDER
Line 2 — 50 Drunk Frank Hippos on the OVER.

    Thanks. :)

  63. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I don’t want to sit and complain about a team that is in 1st place on 8/8, but I am concerned about the Pirate OF.
Sounds like McCutchen is out today with a shoulder problem.
IF he was to go down for any length of time, this OF would look basically like the OF of a lower echelon team.
With no added help at the trading deadline, RF is a mess.
Again….Not complaining, but thinking ahead to when it matters most.
The Pirates should’ve added an OF’er last week.
    That chance barely exists now……

  64. Thundercrack says:

Are you suggesting that Cutch isn’t injured and just doesn’t want to face today’s starting pitcher?

  65. War Horse says:

Please give me: 100 on Line #1 on the UNDER
100 on Line #2 on the OVER

    Optimism never hurt!

  66. theplanisworking says:

May he join the carnival………. cruise lines, that is.

  67. theplanisworking says:

May he join the carnival………. cruise lines, that is.

  68. theplanisworking says:

Should Frank Go Like 60?? ;)

  69. Jandy says:

  70. theplanisworking says:

    WE <3 PIE !!! ;)

  71. Jandy says:

go down with the ship ;)

  72. JRay3 says:

I am not disagreeing with your point on the team’s need to add an OF at the trade deadline, as I too, felt that was a glaring need that should have been addressed.

But an interesting take I heard on the MLB Network last night and one of the commentators was saying that not since 2002 when the Anaheim Angels won the world series has a team done so by out hitting their competition or with a team built on offense.

This 2013 Pirates team has been built on its pitching and defense, and I still believe any success it has will be because it out pitches and plays better defense than its opposition.

  73. Jandy says:

TC, I’d never throw that chit at Cutch, you should know better.

  74. theplanisworking says:

Actually, I am game for it! ;)

  75. Jandy says:

    Well said, JRay :)

  76. Big B says:

    Doom and Gloom!

  77. JohninOshkosh says:

You think Jose Fernandez would switch lifes with me ?

  78. Jandy says:

    Have faith, Big B!

  79. Jandy says:

I’m counting on Marte to cover center, half of left and half of right today.
    Step it up, #6!

  80. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m suggesting you need to lighten up a little bit.

  81. Jandy says:

Only if he could be guaranteed he would never miss Tuesday Twitter ;)

  82. tdb1977 says:

100 on the over for line 1
100 on the under for line 2

  83. theplanisworking says:

  84. theplanisworking says:

Glad I can amuse you. :)

  85. Big B says:

No worries from me. Glad they are going to be careful with Cutch. The beauty of having two capable CF’s on this team is that Marte can slide over and cover the spot with ease.

  86. theplanisworking says:

Frank does that every game, Jandy.

    I believe its called “fertilizer”.

  87. Jandy says:

zactly! Josh will be fine in right. Presley has played left. Not as steady as with Cutch in there, but the outfield should be ok.

  88. Jandy says:

You’re on a roll, Hipposter lol

  89. Jandy says:

  90. Dadtackular says:

    Line 1 under for 100
    line 2 under for 100

  91. Brandie says:

Greetings all in Lunatic Nation. I hope everyone has a terrific game. Got great news. Will be starting new job very soon.

Baseball team is Dyn-o-Mite! Blog friends are Awesome. Starting a better pasid job. Good vibes to everyone!

  92. pattonbb says:

    Travis Snider makes that play.

  93. JRay3 says:

Well it would not be a game against the Marlins unless the Bucs let them take an early lead for them to have to mount a comeback to.

  94. Big B says:

    Walks kill…..

  95. JaxBuc says:

My favorite name joke like that goes back to my teenage years

If Ella Fitzgerald married Darth Vader…

  96. Jandy says:

Congrats Brandimal, glad to hear that! I know you’ve been waiting…. :)

  97. Brandie says:

May he join the circus…as the guy who sweeps up the Elephant poo!

  98. MadTurk says:

Why did he dive? I have no use for Josh. nothing from him all year except the homer he other night. Hit into a DP and an FC last night and they were signing him praises. I don’t even want him on the bench.

  99. pattonbb says:

Oops….I forgot my smiley face thingy….

  100. Brandie says:

    Mmmmmm. Free Pie!

  101. JRay3 says:

I hear Lambo makes that play and makes it look routine.

  102. Jandy says:

    yes they do.

  103. JRay3 says:

    Congrats on the new position!

  104. Brandie says:

I like if Uma Thurman married Dan Uggla…

  105. pattonbb says:

Lambo makes that play behind his back, with his eyes closed, and one hand pointing at the crowd.

  106. florida steeler says:

Great outfield play–get a damn right fielder!!!!

  107. Brandie says:

    Great…Heiniken Hippos!

  108. Jandy says:

Seems to me, Cole needs to settle a bit. A walk and 2 hits already.

  109. Brandie says:

    Thank you everyone!

  110. JaxBuc says:

    Congrats, Muppet!!

  111. Brandie says:

While whistling Dixie through lips glued shut!

  112. Jandy says:

    Marte’s error doesn’t help either.

  113. Brandie says:

Good observation. He needs to just pitch, not pitch like the guy whose bound to mess everything up!

  114. Jandy says:

Well we have 2 runs to catch up. Let’s go guys…hit the ball!

  115. SteelAg70 says:

Not sure about Cole….beginning to wonder…

  116. MadTurk says:

Cole does not look like he is into the game today. That could be troublesome.

  117. Big B says:

What a mess of an inning. Cole lets his frusteration get the best of him at times which leads to bigger issues.

Poor outfield play does not help.

  118. Jandy says:

it’s early. I’ll wait another inning.

  119. SteelAg70 says:

Get ready for lots of K’s today folks…

  120. theplanisworking says:

    Make us all proud Muppet!

    Happy Hippo Here! :)

  121. Stickyweb says:

I too felt they should get an OF at the deadline, but since the sellers thought it was their market, I’m glad they didn’t overpay for a small upgrade. That said JRayTrey, let’s be realistic. The Pirates would have needed to replace 2/3 of their lineup to outhit any of the other playoff teams. Saying they’re going to win with pitching and defense doesn’t preclude strenghtening the lineup or bench.

  122. theplanisworking says:

I think the Pirates think the game starts at 7:05.

  123. JRay3 says:

Welcome back, did not hear from you last night while Morton picked up his 4th win, pitched seven solid innings and the team increased its lead in the Central while moving to a season high 25 above .500.

Now as for that play in RF, you really think that was an easy play? Ball was slicing towards the line away from Harrison was positioned, you really are grasping at times.

  124. Brandie says:

Shout out to my old high school German teacher with this one…

  125. Jandy says:

Thanks JRay, I was wondering how to say what you just said :)

  126. Stickyweb says:

Congrats Brandie. Let me guess, you’re gonna celebrate by going to lift?

  127. theplanisworking says:

A girl after my own heart!

Amstel animals, and Heineken Hippos. :)

  128. Brandie says:

With the Blog behind me, How can I lose?

  129. Jandy says:

Maybe DK should buy them all some iced coffee for the caffeine boost ;)
    is that a banned substance????

  130. Jandy says:

    darn right!!!

  131. Brandie says:

    Already lifted!

  132. theplanisworking says:

    I thought you said…………….

With the Blog behind me, Hold Your Nose.

  133. Jandy says:

Hipposter, you are one whack Hippo lol

  134. theplanisworking says:

Oh, he was here……….. he said Morton wouldnt last the 5th.
You must have missed that sage comment.

  135. Stickyweb says:

    Where’s free pie?

  136. Brandie says:

    Hey,Hey! Thanks JRay Tre.

  137. theplanisworking says:

    Ask A-Roid. :D

  138. MadTurk says:

I am willing to wait and hope he gets into it. I just have not been all that impressed with Cole so far. Not to say I don’t like him I think when he learns to pitch and not throw and trust his stuff (all of it) then he will be a solid pitcher for us.

  139. theplanisworking says:

    You just figgering this out?

    Old age affecting you? ;)

  140. Brandie says:

Full of Wind, Pee, And Excitement, Hippo?

  141. Jandy says:

don’t forget, Sanchez is catching, no?
    Martin is better with him.
Gotta be patient tho, I think.

  142. Jandy says:

    I guess I’m suffereing from sometimers ;)

  143. theplanisworking says:

Trust me, my Wind and Pee doesnt excite, Brandie.

  144. Stickyweb says:

Thanks to him, Morton’s new nickname is “Complete Game Charlie” since he came as close to a complete game as he did to FL Stiller’s (premature) 5 inning outing

  145. Jandy says:

    well, that went better :)

  146. MadTurk says:

Isn’t there more of a history with Sanchez from the minors then he has with Martin?

  147. Jandy says:

I am sure there is, but Martin is just a better catcher. Wiser and smarter.

  148. MadTurk says:

    Much better

  149. Arriba Wilver says:

+1. Gotsta score some runs to win.

  150. Lad9 says:

Way to go Muppet! Congrats. You will kick a$$!

  151. Jandy says:

wild pitch by Fernandez, Jones to second

  152. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    8-2 home-stand leading into today’s game
4 game winning streak leading into today’s game
25 games over .500 leading into today’s game
3 game lead in the division leading into today’s game
Best winning % in all of baseball leading into today’s game

ONE loss today and somehow everything listed above won’t matter to some here…

  153. Milo Hamilton says:

  154. Jandy says:

It all matters to me :)
    Thanks, Playoffs!

  155. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  159. Arriba Wilver says:

    Hi Frank! {waves}

  160. Lad9 says:

So true. The Eeyore factor is very high here, and every so often Chicken Little clucks in….

  161. Lad9 says:

    + many, blogmother…

  162. Milo Hamilton says:

All hearts & flowers then ? Got it. Whew, thank goodness everything’s perfect. Back to work.

  163. Jandy says:

    AWWW thanks, friend :)

  164. Jandy says:

  165. JD says:

Good call Playoffs. Don’t let the nincompoops get you down.

  166. Stickyweb says:

The good news: The Bucs are running up Fernandez’s pitch count…39 through 2 innings.

The bad news: I think they’ll probably need a hit or two to win the game

  167. Jandy says:

I was just thinking a hit or three might help ;)

  168. MadTurk says:

One loss no biggie, we still get he series. Although a sweep is always welcome.

  169. Arriba Wilver says:

    Yeah, surprised at the walks.

  170. Daquido_Bazzini says:

There’s a limit to that theory.

  171. Jandy says:

Yes. The sky won’t fall if we lose today.

  172. theplanisworking says:

You and Milo are gonna be on Frank’s List.

  173. theplanisworking says:

You and Milo are gonna be on Frank’s List.

  174. Jandy says:

    Yeah, there’s another one…Presley

  175. Bizrow says:

56 pitches for Fernandez so far, hopefully if our sticks can’t knock him out, the pitchcount will

  176. Jandy says:

All right…a single by Walker. That might break the ice…

  177. JaxBuc says:

The no-hitter is still in effect.
But 56 pitches through 2.2 is not a good sign for the Fish.

Can’t wait to get to their ‘pen.

  178. Bizrow says:

Sorry sticky, didn’t see your post

  179. theplanisworking says:

You are going to have to help me, Mom Teresa.

I dont want to say any bad words about our team, lest I be branded an Eeyore, or Chicken Big.

You can do the honors for me, ok?
After all, you are a Saint. ;)

  180. JaxBuc says:

    A hit!

And up to 61 pitches in the third inning.

    This is looking promising.

  181. Jandy says:

if I’m a Saint, then heaven is full of sinners :)

  182. Jandy says:

I wish Petey would come thru at times like this…

  183. Arriba Wilver says:

Walker’s batting .318, .400 OBP, and .923 OPS in the last 2 weeks. That’ll help.

  184. chethejet says:

Buccos just don’t have the banger in Rf or 1st base in the ready. Sorry lambo is just another guy who will be at best average up here. Don’t know if they are working on any August waiver deals, but it looks like this year will be going to the dance with who brought you. Off season no matter what go get a bat.

  185. Nate83 says:

If him and Jones contribute going forward the offense will be good enough to come out on top more often then not. Hopefully Walker continues that through Augest and into September.

  186. Arriba Wilver says:

Most he’s thrown is 108, and that was his last game against Cleveland.

  187. pattonbb says:

As the great Johnny Cash said, “Sometimes sinners make the best saints”.

  188. Jandy says:

OK Jones on….let’s move him around!

  189. Jandy says:

I’m the poster child then ;)

  190. theplanisworking says:

but does that make you an Eeyore?

  191. Milo Hamilton says:

Hi Frank. Quite the crowd for a Thursday afternoon, huh ?

  192. pattonbb says:

I know he doesn’t have anything to show for it, but that was a pretty nice at bat by Tony Sanchez.

  193. Jandy says:

    Nope, not an Eeyore…sorry…lol

  194. Matt Alexander says:

Does all this Lambo talk remind anyone else of the year Steve Pearse was the greatest hitter in the history of minor league baseball..that umm..didn’t quite translate to the majors did it?

Having said that – to anyone actually watching the game: was the flyball in the 1st inning that Harrison didn’t catch something that a normal competent OF’er would usually get? Radio only here so i’m just curious.

  195. Jandy says:

JRay said earlier that the ball was slicing away from where JHay was positioned….difficult to play.

  196. Naje says:

It was anything but routine… ball tailing away from him… was not an error… good effort… sometimes a hit is a hit is a hit. That was a hit.

  197. Milo Hamilton says:

An average right fielder catches that ball. Standing up. Sorry.

  198. Stickyweb says:

No worries, it looks like the trend is continuing. 79 through 4 innings, really? How do we not have a run yet?

  199. JRay3 says:

Harrison ran full speed and made a full out dive on that play and just missed ball. There is not a RF on this team – Jones, Tabata, Presley that makes that play.

The Pirates may just have below average choices at RF than.

  200. florida steeler says:

Is the manager of the Marlins Clint’s best buddy?? This lineup f the Bucs is a joke!!!!

  201. MadTurk says:

Agreed no use for the drive there.

  202. SJB says:

I think he said average right fielder, not a Pirates right fielder. ;)

  203. florida steeler says:

The 20 year old for the Marlins is the real deal. Cole, Tallion ???? Many question marks.

  204. JRay3 says:

Don’t know who this Christian Yelich is but he has gone 5-9, .555 this series against the Bucs.

  205. Milo Hamilton says:

You just described the end of the play. The 1st step was back. Not his fault, he’s not an outfielder & he always gives his all. Unless Cole could find out a way to give up negative runs or hold them off until it storms, doesn’t much matter.

  206. JRay3 says:

Yeah I think Clint and Redmond go way back, they both also were former catchers.

  207. SJB says:

Yeah, I thought they cut welfare checks on Wednesday too, not Thursday.

  208. Jandy says:

Not everyone can be the best, FS, but I will say this team does it’s best. They somehow manage to pull wins out of their behind ends that amaze us fans who don’t expect perfection.
Cutch needed the game off. Clint had to tinker with what he has available. Sometimes teams run into a pitcher they have trouble with. You know what? It happens to every team. Doesn’t mean either team stinks or sucks.

No one said you have to watch the game or follow the Bucs.

  209. Jandy says:

he seems to be a Pirate Killer for sure.

  210. JRay3 says:

Probably so, Fernandez has won his past three decisions, has a 1.67 ERA since the beginning of June.

The kid is going to beat a lot of teams, Bucs just did not catch a break having to see him twice in their six games with the Fish.

  211. Jandy says:

So Tabata in for Cole, so Cole is done for the day.

  212. Stickyweb says:

#8 prospect in all of baseball according to BA. Looks like they nailed that one.

  213. Milo Hamilton says:

He is a very impressive young hitter. That’s only the 2nd opposite field HR to left at PNC all season. Pedro had the other.

By the way for those of you out of town, it feels like Atlanta out there today humidity wise. The ball should fly a mile today. Makes me want to play golf.

  214. theplanisworking says:

Maybe he stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night? ;)

  215. Jandy says:

No team wins them all. I’m ok with that :)

  216. Stickyweb says:

Yep, the Marlins are sitting pretty and the Bucs just have loads of problems, with nothing to look forward to. Oh wait, I just remembered the standings…never mind

  217. Jandy says:

and Tabby promptly grounds out lol

  218. Lad9 says:

I believe he is their top position player prospect, is only 21, and looks like he is about 12. He can definitely play some ball….

  219. Jandy says:

Well. Now. Marte with a walk.

  220. Stickyweb says:

Go Jandy, put him in his place. And his place is with Coonelly on a far out planet.

  221. Lad9 says:

    Well said Mom T!

  222. Matt Alexander says:

So Lastings Milledge would have caught that 1st inning flyball is what you’re all saying…haha – okay, just curious.

  223. Jandy says:

    Presley singles!

  224. Chuck H says:

Cole was robbed on that first pitch to Yelich. I’m watching on Gameday, and that pitch was near the middle of the plate. Blind ump called it a ball. Don’t know why we can’t hit this
guy Fernandez. He’s lost 5 games. Some teams can hit him. Of course, some days, the
Bucs can’t hit anybody. They still need a bat with some clout.

  225. JRay3 says:

Great hustle by Presley to take third with no one covering. Bucs on the board, Fernandez at 93 pitches and coutning may not make it to the sixth.

There will be plenty of chances off the Marlins pen today.

  226. Stickyweb says:

They’ve come back from 0-2 and 0-3 deficits the last 2 games. overcoming 0-4 seems like the next logical step, no? Not that logic has any place in a blog or anything.

  227. Milo Hamilton says:

    Pedro needs to wake up.

  228. Jandy says:

Ehh..some people aren’t happy unless they’re tryin to make everyone else miserable…ain’t workin ;)

  229. Jandy says:

    see! it’s coming around :)

  230. Jandy says:

  231. theplanisworking says:

Does that make it a “Pringle” ??

  232. Milo Hamilton says:

    Where’s Hasis ?

  233. JRay3 says:

Ask and you shall receive. RBI #74 for El Toro and Bucs slash Marlin lead in half.

  234. Jandy says:

The way this team (Marlins) look, they are young….but hungry.

  235. Thundercrack says:

Listening to Brown & Blass go on and on about Fernandez you would think they are the Marlins’ announcers.

  236. Jandy says:

Bummer Walker was out…but hey we do have it cut in half now :)

  237. Lad9 says:

Hippo, you could neve be an Eeyore. First, wrong species. Donkeys swim poorly too, so the pond would be of little use! Second, when you are critical there is a reasoned, well thought-out argument. Plus you post positive items. You just do not fit the profile…. Sorry! :)

  238. Jandy says:

Like the Marlins were about Cutch last night? lol

  239. JRay3 says:

This team makes you play all nine innings, they make it a 27 out game.

  240. Bizrow says:

OK, 4-2, Fernandez at 98 pitches

  241. Jandy says:

I’m jonesing for a long hit into the corner…

  242. Stickyweb says:

He came in with a batting average against of .190 The league’s not hitting him too much. Oh and right now, Bucs are 5 for 18 on him today, or .278

  243. Jandy says:

Lookin a bit better eh? :)

  244. Stickyweb says:

How close was the play on Walker at the plate?

  245. Jandy says:

Logic has nuttin to do with these 2013 Buccos … but that’s fine with me :)

  246. JohninOshkosh says:

I love me some weekday day baseball.

  247. Jandy says:

    sounds good to me!

  248. Stickyweb says:

Or the fans of these 2013 Buccos…LOL :-)

  249. Lad9 says:

Lets get into the marlin tank and I will take my chances….

  250. Jandy says:

    Makes work go faster ;)

  251. Jandy says:

    me too!

  252. Jandy says:

  253. Jandy says:

    darn right!

  254. pattonbb says:

Giancarlo Stanton looks pretty good in RF. Too bad he’s wearing the wrong uniform.

  255. JRay3 says:

Not that close they had him by a couple of steps.

  256. JohninOshkosh says:

You know if, nay when, the Bucs make the playoffs, television will make them play the day games.

  257. Jandy says:

let’s hope DayDro shows up then :)

  258. Stickyweb says:

That’s right Jandy, when life gives you lemons…

  259. Milo Hamilton says:

Keep your eye on dugout shots to see if Cutch has tied his hair back. Indicator on if he’s available to pinch hit.

  260. NMR says:

First at-bat against Charlie last night impressed the heck out of me.

I don’t necessarilly know if fouling off pitches is a skill – at least compared to hitting the same pitches in the field of play – but he spoiled three or four pitchers pitches before sending one oppo on a rope.

    Tip your cap, Chuck.

  261. Jandy says:

all right Jeanmar gets 3 up and 3 down….now, the Bucs’ bats need to get warmer…

  262. Jandy says:

    You SPIKE the lemonade ;)

  263. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m certainly not complaining, just noting.

  264. Jandy says:

I don’t think Sticky was saying you were, Oshkosh. he’s cool

  265. NMR says:

  266. JRay3 says:

Pirates six through nine hitters today: 0-11 with 5 of the 7 K’s…not getting any help from that part of the order.

  267. Stickyweb says:

Didn’t think you were complaining, I just like looking on the bright side of things. I really don’t fit in too well here. Lynchburg Lemonade, eh Jandy?!?!? I like where your mind’s at.

  268. Stickyweb says:

Good call, Milo. That’s definitely not old school, eh?

  269. Bob Hasis says:

You have summoned me – for what reason?

  270. Stickyweb says:

Duh, that’s why there at the bottom of the order. Sorry, JRay, just couldn’t resist. :-)

  271. Dom says:

Sanchez is 0-3 with two strikeouts and looks to be headed below the Mendoza line. Maybe we should check the waiver wire for a catch.

  272. Too bad he’s hitting .245.

  273. KenKopp says:

I’ll put our ball girls up against any ball guys or girls in the league. Their fielding percentage has to be at or near the tops in the majors. They make the tough plays too. The left field one gave two balls to the same kid today. Mental error or favortism?

  274. Bob Hasis says:

So the questionable consensus on this blog is, for the dubious marginal defensive advantage we get from Barmes, we are forced to endure those sad grandiose strike outs.

    Bad trade off.

  275. Nate83 says:

Wow that is a very small sample size. I wouldn’t pull the plug yet. Fernandez is a great pitcher. The entire league is batting below the Mendoza line against him (.190).

  276. Milo Hamilton says:

Your favorite 3rd base coach ran us into an out at the plate. With 1 out, no less. Really bad.

  277. Stickyweb says:

She gave them to Coonelly’s nephew…she’s bucking for a promotion.

  278. Bob Hasis says:

You’re not blaming Leyva, when clearly Walker was to blame!

  279. Bob Hasis says:

It’s just another example of HIS incompetence. I get tired preaching about it

  280. Jandy says:

  281. Jandy says:

    There’s Bob :)

  282. Milo Hamilton says:

    Oh boy, Chad Qualls !

  283. Milo Hamilton says:

    He heard my page.

  284. JRay3 says:

First two runners on…Cutch to PH and all the Bucs are in business in their half of seventh.

  285. Jandy says:

I was thinkin the same thing…

  286. Bob Hasis says:

Jandy, just like Leyva above, repetition of negatives will eventually be ruinous

  287. Dom says:

Was there any game that cutch didnt play in this year?

  288. theplanisworking says:

Frankie not only reads this blog, he keeps an eye on the ballgirls too. ;)

  289. Bob Hasis says:

    Brilliant coaching job

  290. Lad9 says:

To quote Steely Dan “Felonious my old friend. Step on in and let me take your hand” Welcome Chad. Just long enough to load them up again….

  291. pattonbb says:

I’ll take his .245 and raise you a Tabata and Harrison.

  292. Milo Hamilton says:

Clint: “Hey Cutch, how do you feel ?”
Cutch: “I can give you one good swing.”
Clint: “Then give me one good swing.”

    Or something along those lines.

  293. JRay3 says:

Cutch is now 11-19 in the month of August, .578…..bases juiced! And that was a brief appearance made by Qualls.

  294. NMR says:

    “…dubious marginal defensive advantage…” is Bazzini-like poetry.

    Well done.

  295. Milo Hamilton says:

Mercer for Walker ? Just asking.

  296. Dom says:

Are you insulting Hurdle for playing Cutch?

  297. Patrick(ri) says:

Now the Marlins have us where they want — loaded, no outs & rbi slots up.

    Just kidding. i hope.

  298. Stickyweb says:

What consensus, questionable or otherwise? I submit you couldn’t get a consensus on this blog on whether the Pirates are named after sea-faring ne’er-do-wells or those that steal software. I for one prefer Mercer 5 or 6 days a week, but you have to get Barmes in there occasionally.

  299. NMR says:

Should not even be a question.

  300. Stickyweb says:

    Vs LHP. Have faith.

  301. chethejet says:

Walker and Doumit just couldn’t hit the long ball RH. Can’t see him staying RH next year and batting below the Mendy line.

  302. Milo Hamilton says:

Marte need to be on 3rd.

  303. JRay3 says:

And all of a sudden for a team that could not muster a sac fly for months, they now have six during this 11 game home stand. Back within one.

  304. Milo Hamilton says:

C’mon Pedro. Remember the big hit against Cingrani.

  305. Jandy says:

Well Bob, these Buccos defy logic all the time…so….

  306. T.S. says:

Now that Cleveland has waived Mark Reynolds, I think it’d be good if the Pirates pick him up and assign him to AAA (drop Russ Canzler). I think Mark might be a tick better. Who knows.

  307. Milo Hamilton says:

This will be Gaby against a righthander.

  308. pattonbb says:

    strike 3

    I mean…Ball 4!!

  309. Jandy says:

    he’s there now lol

  310. Milo Hamilton says:

Alex Rios has been claimed as well. I doubt he made it past Texas.

  311. Milo Hamilton says:

My dad used to say – F.O.B. Full of Bucs. From Rosey Rowswell I think.

  312. Bizrow says:

The Gunner used to call the 60 Bucs, the Never Say Die Pirates

Sound familiar to the 2013 version ;-)

  313. NMR says:

Still want Hurdle dictating the platoon advantage by PH Mercer in Dunn’s first AB.

  314. JRay3 says:

Have to, better than Jones versus a LH. Jones 1-17, .059 10 K’s this year versus southpaw.

Could we see 2 sac flies in one inning?

  315. Lad9 says:

    Come on Gaby!

  316. Patrick(ri) says:

Almost feel sorry for Dunn — he caught Pedro.

  317. Lad9 says:

Good call JRay! Ty Ballgame makes another appearance!

  318. Jandy says:

  319. pattonbb says:

That’s good baseball right there. I don’t care what you say.

  320. Milo Hamilton says:

    Yes. Yes I could. :)

  321. JRay3 says:

There it is…job well done by Gaby….tie ballgame!

  322. theplanisworking says:

Just like you, climbing in Playoffs standings!

    GO LIKE 60, BIZ!!!

  323. Bizrow says:

What are these sacrifice fly thingies, anyways??

  324. theplanisworking says:

    Ty game!!!

    GO EEYORES !!!!! ;)

  325. Jandy says:

    WTG Gaby!

  326. Milo Hamilton says:

Chad Qualls finally pays dividends. Stiff.

  327. Jandy says:

Let’s hear it for Ty !!!

  328. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++ read my mind.

  329. JohninOshkosh says:

Does that mean the ChiSox have to either let him go without a trade or revoke the waiver ?

  330. Patrick(ri) says:

Can he do it again? Go Josh!

  331. Bizrow says:

    xactly ;-)

  332. JRay3 says:

A play that Pedro could have easily given up on, but hustles all the way til end of the play and keeps the inning alive.

    This is just good baseball.

  333. Jandy says:

whatever they are, I like ‘em :)

  334. Arriba Wilver says:

Looks like he’s ruining the clubhouse camaraderie there, too. :-)

  335. Jandy says:

ALL right…error in our favor :)

  336. theplanisworking says:

  337. Bizrow says:

Wonder if Cutch will stay in the game?

  338. Bob Hasis says:

No for Leyva holding Tabby at third

  339. Arriba Wilver says:

Really bad play by the Marlin’s SS. Good hustle by Pedro.

  340. Patrick(ri) says:

The Ad Agency doing the English soccer bits is doing a fine job– almost makes me want to watch.

  341. Bizrow says:

many nominees for POTD, thats gotta be one of em…

  342. Bob Hasis says:

  343. theplanisworking says:

  344. Bob Hasis says:

    Absolutely right

  345. Stickyweb says:

They could also finalize a trade with the team that claimed him.

  346. pattonbb says:

    STFD Mike, I mean Giancarlo.

  347. theplanisworking says:

DK would be proud of you.

    GO RIVERPUPPIES !!!!!!!!!

  348. NMR says:

It’s only six games, but I haven’t seen anything out of Hechavarria worthy of the hype.

Kid looks like the bats gonna get knocked out of his hands.

  349. Lad9 says:

True dat. The blog has been rapier sharp today….

  350. theplanisworking says:

Or, if you listened to the many people here on this blog last month who thought he was an uber-bum, the ChiSox could just shoot him, too.

  351. Stickyweb says:

    Yeah, those are really funny.

  352. Milo Hamilton says:

Wilson has some good pop today. Of course, that’s most days.

  353. JohninOshkosh says:

Oh, so the trade option is still there with the claiming team? Got it. Thanks, my man !

  354. theplanisworking says:

Milo , you, and AW get it for the Frank stuff on the morning thread. :)

  355. Patrick(ri) says:

Walk the old man. Polanco is a burr under the saddle.

  356. Milo Hamilton says:

I don’t like Ruggiano here. He’s like 0 for his last 35 or something.

  357. Milo Hamilton says:

0 for 38 & he walks him on 4 pitches.

  358. Patrick(ri) says:

    Anybody seen Clint?

  359. Jandy says:

    Oh Lord.

  360. Arriba Wilver says:

I think you just jinxed us. Thanks, DK. ;-)

  361. NMR says:

As I was typing another post praison Wilson!

  362. NMR says:

  363. Arriba Wilver says:

    He’s gotta pull him now.

  364. JRay3 says:

Yes sir…Wilson wiggles out of it!

  365. Jandy says:

    Thank you Lord!

  366. Arriba Wilver says:

Has Melancon been used longer than one inning?

  367. theplanisworking says:

Must be nice just going down the hall for that, eh?

  368. Arriba Wilver says:

  369. JRay3 says:

Melancon has not pitched more than one inning in any of his 54 appearances this year.

  370. Arriba Wilver says:

That was the old Barmes. Smh

  371. Sisyphus says:

The reluctance to praising Lambo is identical to the reluctance to praising Marte, Tabata, Walker, McCutchen, Cole, etc., etc.

  372. Arriba Wilver says:

    And the old/new Tabby.

  373. Arriba Wilver says:

    Thx. I didn’t think so.

  374. Jandy says:

yeah I was sadly thinking the same thing :/

  375. JRay3 says:

Well Marte uses his wheels once again, SB # 34 and we have RISP.

  376. Jandy says:

  377. Arriba Wilver says:

Too bad. That’s a hit if they aren’t playing in because one run wins it.

  378. Jandy says:

OK Great White Shark, let’s get ‘em out!

  379. Milo Hamilton says:

    100% right. That’s a no doubles single.

  380. Bizrow says:

I think we are due for a walkoff win

After all, how long has it been since we had one of them???

  381. Milo Hamilton says:

The Rangers did indeed claim Alex Rios.

  382. Jandy says:

    Monday night?

  383. Milo Hamilton says:

A homer by Walker making Clint a genius for not hitting for him earlier.

  384. Milo Hamilton says:

Steve Carell should play Ed Lucas in the movie. Isn’t he a 40 year old rookie ?

  385. Bizrow says:

    kidding, kiddo

  386. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m beginning to like this Melancon kid.

  387. Jandy says:

Great White Shark does it again :)

  388. JRay3 says:

And on 16 tidy pitches, Mark “the shark” Melancon sets the Marlins down in order in the 9th.

  389. JohninOshkosh says:

Somewhere in Pennsylvania, Groat is smiling.

  390. Jandy says:

You know, I was wondering if Groat would pop in here….miss him…

  391. Jandy says:

    Gotta go…dang…sending good vibes!

  392. SteelAg70 says:

    That stinks….

  393. JMB says:

    darn DP!

  394. irishjim says:

not excited to see Hughes here, too bad Walker wasn’t on base for that Sanchez double

  395. Milo Hamilton says:

    This is a scary inning.

  396. JohninOshkosh says:

That was pretty good range, Robert.

  397. florida steeler says:

When will Pedro come through in the clutch??

  398. Patrick(ri) says:

Get this guy. He is bound to tired.

  399. Dom says:

    But Carrell is 50…

  400. Milo Hamilton says:

    … or not.

  401. Bizrow says:

    Lets end this now

  402. SteelAg70 says:

Don’t expect any wai8ver deals folks…players will not make it through to the Buccos….

  403. JohninOshkosh says:

    I loved Bill Madlock.

  404. JRay3 says:

Today? In the fifth inning, RBI single, now 3 RBI’s in this series.

  405. Nate83 says:

Well there was today when he got an RBI in the 5th and then had a nice at bat for a walk in 7th. There also was the triple to score cutch yesterday. But other then that he’s done nothing.

  406. Milo Hamilton says:

Good job by the balding fellow in the blue shirt to make sure Morrison couldn’t catch Harrison’s foul pop.

  407. JohninOshkosh says:

Harrison leads off tenth with a hit. Barmes sacrifices him over. Ducks on the proverbial…

  408. JRay3 says:

Very nice sac bunt by Barmes, two chances to get runner in and win it.

  409. Nate83 says:

He was my favorite player of all time. Growing up for my birthday my dad would get me a Bill Madlock card from the local baseball card shop every year. I thought it cost a ton of money. Little did I know that it cost my parents less then a gumball.

  410. Bob Hasis says:

Yes, albeit the shift was on. However I will give credit where it’s due

  411. JohninOshkosh says:

Yeah, he never, excuse the French, eff’s up with that kind of stuff. Good fundamental ballplayer.

  412. JohninOshkosh says:

Tabby grounds out. Harrison does not advance. Marlins walk Marte. Runners on first and second. Two outs. Martin pinchhitting.

  413. JohninOshkosh says:

    Full count to Martin…

  414. pattonbb says:

    I love that saying.

  415. Dom says:

Martin has never had much success with walk off wins since joining the buccos.

  416. JohninOshkosh says:

    Raise it !!!!!!!! 70!!!!!!!

  417. pattonbb says:

    ….fear the Bones…..

    Hit it.
    Win it.
    RAISE IT!!!

  418. theplanisworking says:

    MARTIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  419. Dom says:

And this time was no exception.

  420. Dom says:

  421. Bizrow says:

We had em all the way

  422. TJ says:

I said it this morning… Russell for MVP!!!

He’s been the glue this year IMO.

Truly amazing. And Clint knew it. You don’t pinch hit your only catcher in extra innings unless you knew he was going to come through

  423. JRay3 says:

Behind five shutout innings turned in by the Shark Tank, two Neil Walker RBI’s, two sac flies and another Russell Martin moment the Bucs sweep the Marlins with an extra inning win 5-4 and there was noooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Pirates are a season best 26 above .500 at 70-44, a season best 3.5 games up in the Central and have won five straight. The Bucs are 41-20 at PNC, finish the 11 game home stand 9-2 and are 5-2 in the month of August.

The Bucs will travel to Colorado to begin a six game road trip. Francisco Liriano will take the mound in the opener for the Pirates.

    Let’s GO Bucs!

  424. Dave G says:

    12 games…. or 12 *wins*?

  425. Milo Hamilton says:

The AJ pie thing is never not funny.

  426. Lad9 says:

Raise it! Nice comeback Buccos! Keeping the Eeyores at bay (or would it be at bray) for another day. Loving every second of this!!!!

  427. Arriba Wilver says:

Martin’s still batting 1.000 as a Pinch hitter.

  428. Dom says:

How do they not see it coming by now?

  429. Kevin says:

Do we lead the league yet in comeback wins? two-in-a-row. And 5 wins-in-a-row. If not for the braves, biogenesis, and Arod, how are the pirates not THE story in baseball?

  430. Arriba Wilver says:

I liked how Martin wiped his face on AJ’s jacket.

  431. Stickyweb says:

Damn it, Coonelly’s gonna be unbearable tomorrow.

  432. Nate83 says:

That is about as good of a win as you can have. They did all the little things right. Things they use to do wrong or let other teams do to beat them. It still doesn’t feel real. Somebody hold up a newspaper with today’s date on it and the NL Central standings to prove that this is real.

  433. JRay3 says:

28 comeback wins this season, 9 walk-offs has to be near the top of baseball.

  434. theplanisworking says:

    Isnt he already?? ;)

Man, I would hate to see his bar tab…………

  435. Nate83 says:

I think Cleveland has 10 but yes it should be near the top.

  436. Lad9 says:

Once again, Clint presses all the correct buttons. Another series of amazing coinidences. It has happened about 70 times this season. Hmmmmm

  437. Milo Hamilton says:

Chew on this one. This is only the 10th time in the last 21 years the Pirates have won 70 games.

  438. Arriba Wilver says:

  439. pattonbb says:

    I don’t even care who’s in RF anymore. I really don’t.

Well….as long as it’s not Tabata.

  440. JRay3 says:

    Pirates 70-44 –
Cards 66-47 3.5 GB play LA tonight
Reds 63-51 7 GB idle tonight

DBacks 58-55 11.5 GB for wild card

    Just unreal.

  441. theplanisworking says:

You are now officially on Bob Hasis’s hit list, pal.

But now you can raise the Jolly hippo. ;)

  442. Dom says:

Question: When is it officially a comeback win? If we are losing 1-0 in the first and score 10 uncontested runs, then is it still a comeback win?

  443. Thundercrack says:

    The Pirates are good.

  444. NMR says:

    Yes, I believe so.

Which is why I’ve always felt that stat was silly.

  445. TJ says:

Its hard to believe but during their last winning season in 1992. The Pirates finished 96-66 but did not get their 70th win of the season until August 22nd.

In 1991 they went 98-64 and got their 70th win on August 18th.

In 1990 they went 95-67 and got their 70th win on August 18th.

To put further into perspective the Pirates as of August 8th have more wins than their season totals for 12 of the past 20 seasons.

  446. Arriba Wilver says:

Funny you mention him. I was thinking Martin is like him. No one would argue Madlock was the MVP of the ’79 team with Parker and Stargell, but he was a huge difference maker. Martin is kind of like a combination of Madlock and Foli to that team because of his defense/ position.

  447. TJ says:

Milo check out my record checking below. Its mind blowing.

  448. TJ says:

I always felt it was silly that if a team goes down 2-0 and the starter gets pulled and the reliever comes in and gives up 5 runs and the team puts up 6 in the 9th and loses 7-6 the starter still gets the loss.

  449. JRay3 says:

Puts this impressive season into perspective. Some really good info/stats above.

  450. Nate83 says:

and we all thought Hurdle was crazy when he said this team was capable of 95 wins.

  451. NMR says:

You could’ve just said assigning “wins” to a pitcher is silly and covered all the reasons.

  452. Nate83 says:

Consider my mind blown TJ. Good informaton. Thanks for sharing.

  453. NMR says:

    He was.

But sometimes crazy people know what they’re talking about.

  454. TJ says:

Nate thats funny cause I was trying to google the article in which he said they could find 16 wins. Here it is…

  455. Vette60 says:

    Awesome!!! Raise the Jolly Roger!

Was following along via gamecast at work and really enjoyed it – coworkers might have wondered why there was a first pump and cheer when Martin hit the winnder but who cares!

Great home stand by the Bucs and Look out Liriano! Taking the mound tomorrow night.

    Randy in RVA.

  456. Nate83 says:

Would this be anywhere near this fun if the Pirates had 5 or 6 winning seasons and a couple playoff appearences over the past 20 years. Don’t get me wrong it would be enjoyable but nothing like this in my opinion.

  457. JohninOshkosh says:

No way this team doesn’t win 12 games in, what, 7 weeks.

I gotta admit, there was a part of me that thought I would never see the day.

  458. TJ says:

    Couple interesting things….

Mark Reynolds DFA by the Indians

Jim Bowden would still like to see the PIrates acquire Rios from the White Sox and has the Pirates sending OFs Willy Garcia and Harold Ramirez in return. I’d honestly rather have Kendrys Morales at 1B

  459. Arriba Wilver says:

  460. NMR says:

Speaking of records, are you keeping a post game #100 tally?

  461. Arriba Wilver says:

FS is still batting 1.000. ;-)

  462. NMR says:

    Hahaha, Bowden’d

  463. TJ says:

No where near as enjoyable. It kind of reminds me of when the Pens came of age and made the playoffs against the Sens and got beat in 5 then went to the finals the next 2 years. That’s the last time I was excited about how a team had turned around.

  464. Arriba Wilver says:

You’re not arguing 20 losing seasons was a good thing, right? :-)

  465. Nate83 says:

I will be the first to admit that last year I was tough on Hurdle and thought he made some terrible in game decisions and waited a little to long on some players that underperformed. Maybe I was wrong and that is what that team and those players needed.

This year the man can do no wrong. He has pushed the right buttons and has created an atmosphere that is just amazing to watch. These guys love him and enjoy playing the game for him so much. I have a feeling that these players trust him and even if they are not happy with a decision he makes they will not step out of line and be a problem but instead stay ready and contribute when called upon. To steal a line from Tomlin a next man up kind of attitude.

  466. Nate83 says:

Not a good thing. Just a silver lining.

  467. Bob Hasis says:

    There is that adage about “a blind squirrel. . . . . .”

As long as he sees the need to keep Leyva at third, I know his thinking is imbalanced, and his logic is elsewhere, real far away.

    More on this later.

  468. Kevin says:

Becoming increasingly likely that we reach 82 during the homestand starting 8/27. Would have to go just 11-5 to break it on the very 1st game against MIL.

  469. Dom says:

    I do. It’s a major hole.

I’m also concerned about backup catcher and the bench. And Locke too.

  470. Nate83 says:

Why the Mariners and White Sox (minus Peavy) would hold on to expensive expiring contracts of players when they have little to no chance of winning this year or next is beyond me. If nothing else you get rid of the money and spend it on other players that can contribute down the road when you may be competitive.

  471. Thundercrack says:

    +1 NMR

That guy just doesn’t give up.

  472. NMR says:

I’m concerned most about the price of tea in China.

  473. TJ says:

The guy has to have something to write about. Kind of like some of the writers in Pittsburgh

  474. Milo Hamilton says:

Pirates can’t get Rios, he was claimed by Texas.

  475. theplanisworking says:

    Losing sleep? ;)

  476. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Some teams have a way of making it happen when it needs to happen.
That would appear to be the case with the 2013 Bucs….

  477. TJ says:

I will be the first to admit I thought he was just trying to build up his team and get them to believe they were good enough to finish as winners. I thought deep down he figured they could finish above .500 but finding 16 wins? Thought that was a bit crazy.

But like they say; shoot for the moon and come up short and your still in the stars. At this point he may have under shot!

  478. Bob Hasis says:

It’s really difficult to say anything negative when we are winning as we are, so I’ll just say Great Job and Keep It Up!!!

  479. TJ says:

Good to know Milo. I hadn’t seen that news… where did you see that?

  480. Naje says:

Rockies 11-23 since July 2 and 1-9 on their 10 game road trip heading into tomorrow’s game with the PBC.

  481. TJ says:

Going 11-5 in 16 games used to be laughable.

  482. NMR says:

If I ever find out I have an inoperable tumor while in surgery after getting hit by a car on the day I find out my wife is cheating on me, I’m calling you.

  483. Milo Hamilton says:

Ken Rosenthal had it earlier. He says it’s unlikely they’ll deal him though. They have until tomorrow I believe.

  484. Dom says:

Maybe with all that caffeinated tea he’s drinking…

  485. Arriba Wilver says:

  486. TJ says:

Never mind; used the power of google to find it.

Pirates would need a miracle for a hitter to slip through waivers

  487. theplanisworking says:

Biz loves to compare this team with the 1960 team.

This team, for comebacks and miracles, seems to be blowing the 1960 team out of the water.

One game at a time. Smash 82.

    Go Bucs!

  488. Arriba Wilver says:

Dom — calm down. We’re gonna be fine. Don’t forget, there’s always Lambo. And how many catchers have we had this year? 3? We had 8 or 9 a couple of years ago. I just satisfy myself that none of them now are named Barajas or Snyder or Doumit or Jaramillo or Paulino. :-P

  489. theplanisworking says:

  490. JohninOshkosh says:

  491. Milo Hamilton says:

We need to hope the Sox & Rangers can work something out for Rios because the Rangers will just keep claiming guys until they get someone.

  492. Thundercrack says:

    A replacement for Nelson Cruz?

  493. JohninOshkosh says:

Adam Dunn is next for this song and dance.

  494. Dom says:

I meant to say maybe not w/ all the caffeinated tea he’s drinking…

  495. Nate83 says:

12-10 gets it done before they go on a 10 game road trip.

  496. NMR says:

Didn’t they know he’d be suspended before the deadline?

Unless they got real desparate, real fast, this one seems odd.

  497. TJ says:

Well even if the Rangers do not; we are last in line and you can’t tell me teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Cards etc wouldn’t claim players just to keep them from us.

  498. NMR says:

I’m gonna just assume you haven’t noticed, but Gaby Sanchez is sporting an OPS of .771 with two less RBI than Neil Walker. In 101 less attempts.

  499. Arriba Wilver says:

OK, now THAT dude was Good! Never forget his block of Prince at the plate when Prince threw him a left hook, and he still blocked him.

  500. TJ says:

May not be desperation. They could be trying to get him cheaper than what he cost at the deadline. The again the Sox could cut him lose and let the Rangers take that salary. If I remember correctly thats how Rios ended up in Chicago; the Blue Jays let him go.

  501. TJ says:

Have you noticed since the AS break Pedro is 14 for 73?

  502. Arriba Wilver says:

I noticed his double today was off a right hander. And while Jones has improved his defense at 1st and in RF, I don’t know he makes that defensive play Gaby made late in the game. Gaby almost didn’t make it. He’s not an issue to me,

  503. Arriba Wilver says:

  504. John Lease says:

I’m very glad to see that Chad Qualls still has fond memories of Pittsburgh.

Thank you Chad, for sucking as spectacularly for the Marlins as you did for the Pirates.

Now, if only van den Hurk can get picked up by the Reds…

  505. Thundercrack says:

I don’t think the Sox will just cut him.

  506. John Lease says:

Madlock would never hit .230 though.

Martin is the fastest catcher the Pirates have had since Kendall though.

  507. Arriba Wilver says:

You’re right. No way he’s the hitter Madlock was. Few are. I probably didn’t express my point well. It was more on the fact that Madlock and Foli were key additions to that team. And Martin fits that role in that context, without specifying particular stats.

  508. Thundercrack says:

Hey have you guys noticed: 70-44

  509. Thundercrack says:

If the Pirates acquire Adam Dunn, EYE will storm the offices on Federal Street.

  510. Arriba Wilver says:

Hurdle pretty much confirmed after the game that the strategy was to get Fernandez to throw a lot of pitches to get him out of the game early. He also confirmed that Cutch was out for for precautionary reasons because of ” the catch” Tuesday night. He said he was OK to hit, but they didn’t want him throwing.

  511. Thundercrack says:

Nice that Jared Hughes got the win today.

  512. likeabugonarug says:

+12. And getting lower every day. :-)

  513. likeabugonarug says:

Although part of me wants to give you +25. That results in Clint’s goal.

  514. Dadtackular says:

  515. pattonbb says:

Remember who made the throw? I’ll give you a hint, his name rhymes with “Mastings Pillage”, and he’s currently teammates with Chris Leroux.

  516. Arriba Wilver says:

I didn’t remember that. So, a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Japanese Division.

  517. likeabugonarug says:

It just dawned on me today that the last time the Bucs had a winning record I was 32. Dang I feel old now!

  518. JohninOshkosh says:

Wow, is it weird to see James Harrison in a Bengals uniform.

  519. JD says:

    + 70……and climbing.

  520. Daquido_Bazzini says:

One difference between this years team and 1960….They had a real RF!

  521. cmat0829 says:

    michael young went completely unclaimed.

  522. theplanisworking says:

    + many.

  523. cmat0829 says:

I think the saying is ” even a blind squirrel gets an acorn every once in a while”.. i don’t think a 70-44 record qualifies as ‘once in a while’. But you can save your ‘facts’ proving your point that Hurdle should be fired and the Pirates would be 110-4 with a decent manager.

  524. Brandie says:

Finally, the suck works for us and not against us…

And, no, I’m not talking about Frank “The Stank” Coonelly. :-)

  525. Brandie says:

    I was a college freshman!

  526. cmat0829 says:

And the fools that run the Rockies thought they shouldn’t be sellers. Amazing.

  527. chethejet says:

Didn’t he sell his home and move?

  528. theplanisworking says:

    Studious Animal. :)

  529. cmat0829 says:

Gaby is performing his role very very well. Now that walker is finding his groove (lefty), and he looked good in his at bat vs. LHP today, the next item that needs to get corrected is Garrett Jones needs to find it… he could always be counted on for a HR here and there and that is even gone….

  530. Thundercrack says:

What do people think about the Phillies giving Chase Utley $27 million for 2 more years.

I know there is a lot of money in the game – and I think the Phillies are going into a new local TV deal, but that seems like a lot for him.

  531. irishjim says:

    i was 12

  532. Brandie says:

And Penn State Housing and Food Service and Penn State Student Government were never the same.

  533. theplanisworking says:

  534. likeabugonarug says:

Given his injury history, and especially with Howard’s injury history, that is a lot of money to risk. And what they really need is pitching. Too many ifs on the staff.

However, he is also one of the faces of the Philthies, and very popular in this area.

  535. theplanisworking says:

    Glad it isnt my money.

I think that is about maybe $10 million too much for him, but, if they think that much of him…………

  536. Brandie says:

New Pirate Motto for this season…

You have heard of “Embrace the Suck!”

I am now going with …”Chuck the Suck!”

    Who’s with me?

  537. theplanisworking says:

Being I couldnt count then, and still cant count now, lets just say I am still old, but I was in better shape then.

Yes, round is a shape. ;)

  538. Brandie says:

    Right Field, is Fundamental.

  539. theplanisworking says:

    I vote for Plank Frank.

    Achieves a better result.

  540. Brandie says:

Ya got me there, Planifest Destiny!

  541. Brandie says:

    More Planet, Less Hippo?

  542. Eric Bowser says:

Since I’m way late on this….

Hey Frank…. go have another drink and shut your mouth. Let the team do their thing on the field.

  543. theplanisworking says:

    Something like that.

  544. Eric Bowser says:

What, you are 5 five years older than me right?

  545. Jason81 says:

    I was 11…

  546. Brandie says:

    Another youngster! :-)

  547. Arriba Wilver says:

And don’t forget the extra National TV contract money that everybody gets. This is Monopoly money.

  548. KenKopp says:

37 for me. Dang, now I feel old.

  549. John Lease says:

I had hair on top of my head the last time the Pirates had a winning record.

Not a lot, but I still had a good knot up there.

But on the minus side, I didn’t have the ear hair that I do today…

  550. Bob Hasis says:

I know what the saying is, but thanks for sharing your literary genius.
Here is another one, in Kipling’s magnificent poem IF, he said, “If you can bear to hear the truths you’ve spoken, twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
If you can bear to see the things you gave your life to broken, and stoop, and build them up again with worn out tools.”

Nowhere in these exchanges of posts, did I ever utter I wanted CH fired. Not once. Ever. You have conveniently “twisted the truth” in this case.
I don’t like Hurdle because of things he does, his decisions at times and his insistence on repeating those bad decisions.

Here are some thoughts for you to ponder; do you think Barmes will be offered a contract next year? For what salary? Certainly not 5 million!! Do you think Leyva will be asked to return?

Irrespective of any his foibles, I am very pleased of his (our) success on the field, and will continue to be.

  551. JD says:

After reading all of the hubbub about Coonely today, I finally went and listened to what he said. He didn’t say anything out of hand. People here would crucify him no matter what he says. People can’t legitimately bash NH this season, so Frank is an easy target.

  552. KenKopp says:

Man DK’s blogs go on forever. 10:49am to 9:24pm. Don’t get me wrong, this is kinda fun. No way he can read all this. He just writes a few sentences and sits back and watch the lunniies be lunnies.

One to one with the Dodgers threatening in the top of the fifth.

    Go Dodgers.

    DK: You’d be surprised.

  553. KenKopp says:

3 run homer by the Dodger’s!

I really, really, really do not want to play a one game wildcard deal.

  554. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, it was so professional to try to take a swipe at someone and not be man enough to at least acknowledge who it was. Such a man.

No problem if Neal Huntington was out there talking some smack since it was him who made the moves as the GM but Coonelly… give me a break.

  555. Eric Bowser says:

    Thank you Dodgers.

  556. Thundercrack says:

Lambo only had a single tonight. And a walk

  557. KenKopp says:

We will see him in the September call ups, and the meantime he can stay sharp and keep his confidence up playing everyday. Believe it or not, this management team might know what they are doing this year..

  558. theplanisworking says:

Frank and neal thank you for your support, comrade. :)

  559. theplanisworking says:

Eric, forget trying to reason with any FO supporter.
    Cant do it.

Paid no attention that Drunk Tank Frank shouldnt have taken a shot at anyone, given history. DK should feel blessed and honored to be the person Drunk Tank Frank took his shot at.

  560. JD says:

70-44 is pretty east to support. Even a hippo should be able to figure that out.

  561. JD says:

    Should be “Easy” to support.

  562. theplanisworking says:

    Oh, I do support it.
    Trust me, comrade.
Thats easy enough for even you to figure out.

I just dont give the FO a complete and total pass like you do.

I support the players and the manager.

I praise them when appropriate, and criticize when appropriate.
I dont troll the thread with stuff like some do.

    I think I need a drink.

  563. Arriba Wilver says:

  564. JD says:

Don’t let the hippo read your last sentence.

  565. Baywatch says:

  566. Arriba Wilver says:

Do you have a link, JD?

  567. Baywatch says:

    Hilarious, John Lease!

  568. Baywatch says:

    Lunnies Gonna Loon.

  569. Arriba Wilver says:

Do you have a link, JD, to the FC interview on the Fan today?

  570. KenKopp says:

No, I was out of touch (working) for awhile, so I’m playing catch up.

  571. KenKopp says:

Yeah, I thought of that as soon as I hit “submit”.

  572. theplanisworking says:

    I can read??? ;)

As much as I dislike the “management team”, which I dont include Hurdle in, you cant argue with the results this year so far.
I just dont forget all the crap they have pulled the past 6 years.

And, if they keep doing things right, I will give them even more credit.
I think you can understand that.

I think I need another drink.

  573. JD says:

See above. It didn’t really seem that over the top to me. He was just yukking it up with the morning show. Other than the DUI, I’ve never really had too much of an issue with Frank.

  574. Jay H says:

    Dodgers win, 5-1. Pirates +4

  575. JD says:

That I can understand, I don’t really care much about the previous years now. This is too much fun to enjoy.

I also understand more drinks too. Enjoy!

  576. KenKopp says:

I totally agree about the past. Let’s go skeet shooting after a cross country flight. Stupid in the past, but the Dodgers just won and we are four up and there will energy in this here blog for some time to come. Even when Lambo gets called up.

  577. Baywatch says:

Arreebz, at the bottom of this article there’s a place to click for “full interview” with Cooneelly on The Fan.

  578. theplanisworking says:

I just came back a bit ago from the local Hell Place, err, I mean Walmart. In 2010, before the 105 losses, I got a Pirate cap for $1. Yes, $1.
Tonight, I saw the same cap going for $14.99.
Retail is the truest sign if you “made” it or not.

Yes, I still have the $1 hat.
    I wear it every day.

And, I kid about all the drinks. I am not allowed to drink.
I will send them to Frank.

  579. Arriba Wilver says:

Thanks, JD. I really prefer to deal with facts. Although, sometimes it’s more fun to make them up.

In listening, FC did say , basically, everything everybody said he did. It wasn’t said, however, with the tone At least I imagined, for the most part. He kind of threw in things, like the blogger comment, That was unnecessary, and in my view demonstrated his defensiveness, but it wasn’t like I anticipated him making a big deal about it. Just more evidence he’s better off not saying anything. He didn’t make a big deal about DK, but again, it was volunteered, defensive and unnecessary.

I hope he succeeds Bud. Read that however you wish. :-)
