  2. With the exception of Liriano and Jones, this is the lineup of young guys that people have been talking about for the last couple of years. Guys who have come up through the Pirates system (except Lambo, but has now been with the Bucs for a couple of years). Imagine if Cole was pitching tonight with this lineup. This could be the team we’re looking at over the next couple of years, but with Lambo at 1st and Polanco in right. The young guys down the stretch of the season make me nervous, but it’ll be nice to see them all play together.

    • You never know. Good possibility of that. I like the idea. Add Taillon to the rotation as well. (next year)

    Beat Em Bucs

Go like 60 (don’t play like you are 60 though…)

  4. Finally, a thread where we can talk Pirate baseball.

  5. I assumed Sanchez would be in tonight with AJ going tomorrow and Martin looking like he boxed 12 rounds last night. It should be any easy game to call. Liriano first pitch fastball strike and then unhittable slider.

  6. Anyone know if Tabata’s off his death bed ?

  7. This morning’s thread isn’t finished, dammit! We didn’t even scratch the surface with Gabby’s error!

  9. why am I the only Pittsburgh fan who can admit that McCutchen is failing – especially lately – with RISP? It’s a big problem moving forward in the pennant race.

As the pressure gets hotter, this year, McCutchen’s stats decline. That is alarming. Look at Dominic Brown, Allen Craig, Jose Bautista, Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Trout, Phillips, et al – their stats improve with RISP. Cutch’s decline sharply.

    Cutch with
no one on base: .969 OPS
    RISP: .751 OPS
    RISP with two outs: .668

Anyone who doesn’t think the fact that the Pirates’ best player’s performance sharply declines in pressure situations this year isn’t a huge concern down the stretch is kidding themselves, or just has a man-crush on McCutchen. Look at how the Pirates intentionally walked Phillips and Craig last night with RISP, and then how Cutch was an easy out both times he came up with RISP. It’s a big issue moving forward if he doesn’t start producing in those situations.

    • Guys the front runner for MVP and we still have to pick out his warts huh? You didn’t want to mentioned that he OPSed .843 in June and .994 in July while the Pirates were making the push to first place though did you? Or that now that they’re in a pennant race, and the pressure is mounting in Aug his OPS is 1.307?
      .
      SMH… Puuulease

      • Frontrunner for the MVP?

He was a candidate as of last week.

He keeps doing what he is doing, and when the votes are counted, he may finish in the top 5.

Don’t get me wrong, i would like nothing better for him to win the award, but, Craig, and Kershaw, and Goldschmidt would be ranked higher than him, especially if Arizona makes a push.

Still long way to go, but i am afraid it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

        • It’s just funny to me, guy is a superstar, one of the best in baseball, and having a year that puts him in MVP discussion, yet there has to be something he’s not doing well…
          .
It’s like looking at Cabrera and saying, “we’ll he’s not stealing any bases, we need him to be more aggressive”

          • That’s not a good analogy. Cabrera not stealing bases is fine. He is killing the ball in pressure situations – RISP and runners on with two outs – while Cutch, all year, is turtling in that situation. The stats show it. He just is not driving in runs – and has zero home runs – with RISP. That is a concern moving forward this season, period. The pressure situations are going to increase.

            • Turtling? You guys are ridiculous…. Team is in first place and he’s heading toward an MVP… And you can bet the house. If the Pirates win the Division, he will be voted MVP.
              .
              #nevergoodenough #alwayswantmore

    • I see your point with Cutch, but let me ask you this: If you were a pitcher, would you rather pitch to Cutch with no runners on or with guys on?

He’s still batting .285 with RISP.

If I’m the pitcher, I’m less likely to attack the zone when there are guys on, make him beat me on MY pitch. Whereas, when guys are not on, I’m attacking the zone, see if I can get him out on a down the middle fastball. If nothing else, he hits a solo shot and typically, teams don’t lose on solo HR’s, unless that pitcher is Paul Maholm.

There’s obviously different approaches to ANY hitter when men are in scoring position. If you watch, a lot of the times when Cutch gets out its on pitches out of the zone or at least out of his zone.

    • Stop making so much sense. You’re gonna have the Ray Stevens crowd all over you. :)

    • You are successful at the plate 30% of the time, you are a gazillionaire

Cutch will be fine and is fine

  10. Soriano has 6 rbi in 2 innings. Yankee OF can drop 6 flyballs in the 9th and it won’t matter.

    • Picked him up at the deadline, didn’t they ?

      • No. As I recall no one was available and every team was asking for prospects that could not be traded.

      • I look at our team and see Marte, Walker, McCutchen, Alvarez, Jones, Mercer, Lambo/Tabata and see 7 positions with young hitters. The only veteran hitter in our lineup is Martin.

I think our lineup would really benefit by having another veteran hitter right smack dab in the middle of it.

Call it the Burnett influence. I think it would serve the rest of the lineup well.

I can very easily see the young hitters choke on their own vomit for a third straight year.

        I’m worried about it.

I look at Arizona and I see remnants of a team that won the AL West in 2011.

Management can’t sit back and watch this team be fed to the lions again.

        Pence
        Morneau – Former AL MVP
        Dunn – 400+ career HR
Heck Delmon Young – 2012 ALCS MVP, 1.000 OPS in World Series vs the Giants

Management needs to calculate the value of winning on this young core compared to collapsing again on the young core when judging which prospect they are willing to move or how much money they are willing to spend.

In my opinion, the impact of winning on this team is priceless.

      • I have called for Soriano since 2011 (you can dig up the blog archives!) but I believe Alfonso wasn’t going to waive his no trade rights for anyone but the Yanks.

I overlook his lack of defense because he can mash lefties and still has good power, plus he is decent on the bases.

    • $$$ played a part with Soriano.

The Yankees’ GM didn’t even want him

  11. From a Google search for your amusement before the first pitch:

    Celebrities with the name SHELBY:

    SHELBY BAILEY, 1957 MISS TENNESSEE
    SHELBY FOOTE, Author
    SHELBY LYNNE, musician
    SHELBY STEELE, Activist

    Pretty impressive, huh ?

  12. Arizona has walked off for the 3rd straight game against Baltimore. They’re not going to need the plane to fly here.

    • Arizona is similar to Colorado.
They seem to play much better at home than on the road.

      • their home park is not that different than Miller Park … great hitters park and their team thrives on it. But they have a LOT of holes on their team, pitching first among them.

You will get to see Heath Bell try to spend the game in the All You Can Eat seats instead of the bullpen…

  13. PEDRO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!

  14. PEEEDDDRRROOO!

  15. PEDRO! Hope that is a break out hit. He was due!

  16. HIIIIPPPOOOOO!

  17. Pedro with a nice shot to center, and now Jonesy to right for 2-0 lead!

  18. JONES !!!!!!!!!!!!
    WOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Honestly, I was going to say that the nice catch by GI Jones was going to get him going again.

  20. Is it too much to ask for 3 in a row???

  21. GI! Wow. Lefty power display. Make it three Andrew!

  22. Two homers, woop woop!!!

  23. Watching the game in a hotel room in Indianapolis.
Didn’t get to the Indians game like I had hoped.

The announcers on the four-letter network know far less than I do about the Pirates. Aren’t they supposed to have some actual factual information available to them before their broadcasts?

  24. The finale call on the drop by Marte by the announcers tonight. IT WAS A FLUKE.

So my question is how many wins this year were due to this fluke thingy?
    How many loses?

Were the 29 home runs by Pedro due to the pitches Flukiness?

    Curious minds want to know

    • pitches should be pitchers.

Is Mercer up this inning? Could it be a repeat of last night? Would that be a fluke?

      • So I’ll go there… I would guess the annnouncers use of the word fluke there is that they don’t expect Marte to drop a ton of fly balls like that all year long… it was careless and cost the Bucs dearly, but what else do you want them to call it?

  25. Not sure if this has been reported anywhere, but a little birdie tells me that the Sunday night drought for the Pirates is ending. Supposedly the Sept 1 game will be moved to 8:00 and be on ESPN. Makes sense – their production equipment will be in town for Pitt/FSU.

  26. Nice that Jones caught that third out with 2 hands!!! Did you see that DK?

  27. OK, have to say it… why every pitcher doesn’t just keep pounding Holliday inside is beyond me… he obviously is looking to extend his inflexible arms and hit up the middle or to right field… pitch him inside and he will be harmless.

And how many 4 bounce base hits are the Cards gonna get? If they were playing billiards, we’d be calling ‘slop’ all game long.

  28. Like that Double Play action.

  29. Calling it…Marte bunt base hit.. right here… right now.

  30. Although I would not wish injury on anyone, it has been nice seeing T. Cruz in the Cardinals lineup instead of Y. Molina.

    • right, and he gets the privilege of catching tonight after 14 innings last night. Yadi will be back tomorrow so enjoy tonight!

      • Without getting too picky, Cruz did not catch all 14 innings. Johnson caught enough to get 3 AB’s, but I don’t remember when the switch occurred.

  31. Shelby read the book on how to strike out Pedro in between innings.
First to last line in the book reads “Do not throw a strike”

  32. As a left fielder, Holliday really plays a nice first base. “Mr. Holliday, American League on line 1. “

    • Allen Craig too. Has DH written all over him. Nearly killed McCutchen last night.

      • This is a team built on two-strike hitting the opposite way. Nice and all but Reds are much better team overall in my opinion.

Reds have superior defense, much better bullpen, and I think starting pitching is about even.

  33. For anyone who is interested………………
please go over to the RiverPuppies thread, and wish the team a hearty GO HOUNDS!!

It is Pittsburgh’s only playoff team, currently. :D

  34. Tony Sanchez with the RBI.

    Nice to see everyone contribute.

  35. Tony with the hit in the hole to score Walker. 3-0 Buccos!

  36. Tony Montana does it the Cardinals way… 4 bouncer to left with a big 3rd run for the Bucs!

  37. Would love to get into their pen early after last night

  38. Very interesting nugget in today’s Wall St Journal … seems the Bucs have now taken the division lead in “resell value” of tickets in August and September… according to the article, September prices are way up.

  39. Starling making up for that error last night with a knock. 5-0 now!!!

  40. Good thing people werent successful with their pitchforks and torches aimed at Marte.

    5-0 good guys!

  41. HUGE HIT with TWO OUTS scores TWO…Marte laced the ball to center and hustled into 2nd. THAT is the type of hit this offense hardly ever gets… big, big, big….

  42. Cards have just announced “Shelby Miller regression night” at Busch…next Saturday night… instead of bobbleheads, a Cards abacus will be given out to first 10,000 fans attending.

  43. There is one beautiful thing about Marte at bat; he hangs in there very well on the curve and usually gets a good balanced swing at it. This partially explains the number HBP’s he has, when the anticipated curve isn’t – or doesn’t

  44. Watching Miller on the mound and he is cooked mentally. The Pirates are in his head!

  45. beautiful inside fastball by Frankie… that is the pitch to get holliday out with

  46. Nice pick and DP by Jones there

  47. Things are going our way tonight!!

The losing streak ends to tonight.

  48. That’ 45 pitches in 4 innings for Liriano. Nice bounce back outing for him.

  49. Might as well be Shelby Foote at this rate (shout out to Oshkosh’s earlier entry). Or Barry Foote for that matter.

  50. Another myth needs to be put out to sea – that Jones is a liability defensively. In either position he plays, he will never be an embarrassment.

Maybe not a Gold Glover, but well above average

  51. nice 2 bagger for Walker

  52. I really am enjoying watch Holliday stumble around in left field… pure entertainment.

  53. A bit of a disappointing start to Lambo’s career.

But, things could be worse for him.

For example, his first name could be “Mutton”

  54. Is everyone a little more of a happy camper tonight?

  55. This is what an ace does.

  56. The hole in right field is still present.

  57. ok who mentioned trolls, now you did it!!!

  58. I let Liriano go deep in this game no matter what his pitch count gets to

    Rest the pen

  59. Fozzy Bear says “Wacha! Wacha!”

  60. I’m off to bed, Loonies…keep it going…hold onto the W!

  61. IS playing the Cards can be like a Holiday for us?

  62. Remove the word IS

  63. unbelievable… only 82 pitches through 8.

  64. Frankie says relax…and Raise It!

  65. RAISE THAT JOLLY HIPPO!

And put away the pitchforks and torches!

  66. Very Vernon Law-esque performance from Liriano tonight. Stopper.

    • Since I didn’t get to watch this one, I was scrolling for a satisfying description. The Deacon reference says it all. Now I can sleep tonight.

  67. bah.. dam that pesky matt carpenter. shoulda been 5-0. consider epic collapse temporarily postponed for a night! ;)

  68. Raise it baby!!! Go for the series win tomorrow and get some runs for AJ and get him back on track too. Night all!

  69. Raise it! Behind he 4 hit pitching of Frankie Liriano, the Pirates beat the Cardinals 5-1. Huge win after last night. Very big game.

  70. WOW! Just what the doctor ordered! Liriano=Mr. Incredible!

  71. Has everyone stepped back from their respected ledges now?

  72. Guys (and DOLLS!) Up here! That was Sooooo ENCOURAGING! Frankie’s my MVP!

  73. An executive for the Houston Astros just called the post-game show. Seinfeld reference.
