  1. Ah. The SEC thread

    • No, it’s not. To take a minute, Drew did you see the star receiver for Georgia, I think his name is Mitchell, is out for the season because of a torn ACL suffered when he chest bumped a teammate celebrating a TD?

  2. Posting for Playoffs

The Window is going to be out and about most of the day today, and kindly requests a lil’ help from one of you fine fellow lunatics.
If you one you could please re-post this for me in today’s game thread, you will have my thanks and gratitude!

Makes my job a helluva lot easier when I don’t have to hunt to find everyone’s “wagers”

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

    Line #1
Total PITCHES THROWN by Charlie Morton in today’s game
    Line is 96.5

    Line #2
Total RUNS SCORED by the Pirates in today’s game
    Line is 4.5

    GOOD LUCK!!!

79 Down, only 3 more to go!!

100 on the under in line #1
100 on the over for line #2

  3. That lineup looks pretty good. It would look better with Marte in left. Hope his hand heals fast(er).

  4. FYI- $1.00 hot dogs and soda at Miller Park today. My boss says he’s going to try for 10.

  5. Will be listening on satellite radio on the way home from Ocean City. Go Bucs and here’s hoping the Reds handle the Cards.

    • Safe trip Bill. Getting out of OC ought to be fun today….

    • big 4 game series for the Reds…. if they don’t at least split, they likely fall out of the division race, or at least makes it very hard for them to make up so much ground on 2 teams. Plus they got punished last week in STL, so for their confidence they need to do well at home vs. STL.

I’m predicting Reds take 3 of 4….which would be good for the Bucs as long as we take at least 2 of 3 from the hated Brewers.

  6. Watching ROOT now. 10 Great Pirates From Pittsburgh. Let’s bring back Honus Wagner!

  7. And now the REPLY function is broken.

  8. Nice to see Tabby back in there, at the top; and Barmey! Here’s hoping it’s a winner’s hand. We were thinking of going over to Dallas when the Pirates come to town. But it’s too daggum HOT at baseball games over there. It’s still upper ’90s out here as the sun’s going down!

  9. and posts are posting out of order.

  10. Blog is broken! Who did it?

  11. I get the feeling we’re all going down with the blog ship! HELP, MR. WIZARD!

  12. I believe the only dates on the Brewer schedule that are circled are the one’s that show that the opponent is the Pittsburgh Pirates.

    • Seems that way.

I will never forgive that organization after the ridiculous over-the-top celebration they did after the 20-0 game a few years ago.

      • hate the brewers… but with the Cheatin’ Loser Braun out, and the “wanna be Brandon Phillips” Rickie Weeks out, and if Gomez doesn’t play, this resembles more of a major league team… especially fearful today of the ‘swing for singles’ lineup of LH hitters vs. Charlie…. let’s go Bucs.. despise the Brewers……

  13. I thought Barmes “lost” the job months ago. Now he’s played three of the last four.??

  14. or strawberry hill.

  15. Ok I blew it. Before JAL the music master corrects me, it wasn’t strawberry hill, Blueberry hill.

  16. REds take a 1-0 lead over Cards after 1.

  17. Reds take 2-0 lead in bottom of second.

  18. Reds up 2-0 on the Cards, so Pirates need to take advantage if the Reds can hold on.

  19. Make that 4-0 Reds still batting in second.

  20. Sadly, now it is 4-1 with man on 3rd and one out in the Reds game – Wainwright led off with a near homer to settle for a double.

  21. I hope it’s hustling Tabata today.

  22. Look at the Brewer record at the top of page. They sure improved their record while we weren’t looking!

  23. Have some stuff to do but have the game on. I’ll pop in a bit later. Miss you guysm

  24. I don’t know WHO broke the blog, but it wasn’t me!!

  25. John, my post was supposed to go in the Drewbert Humphrey box.
But since the blog is broken, our answers go to random places.

  26. Reds lead Cards 5-2 in mid 4th.

  27. Just watched Pedro swing and miss on three pitches, more or less on the outside corner, that were 82,82 & 83 mph. Hmmm. . .

    • maybe morneau can teach him how to actually approach a major league at bat. Haven’t seen it yet for 2+ seasons. I love El Toro but as NH said, right now he is a power threat but he isn’t a good ML hitter.

  28. Got Milwaukee’s record wrong up top. Or fearless leader must be slipping.

  29. Figures that the blog would break down on Labor Day!

  30. Tabby continues his very, very good month or so with an RBI single to left.

  31. Nice bunt by Morton and than Tabby keeps it going with rip down into LF for RBI single, tied up at 1.

  32. Grilli pitched the first inning today giving up one hit and striking out three. He then went into the stands and signed autographs for the rest of the game.

  33. I know they don’t want two righties in a row or two lefties, but I wish they would flip flop Byrd and Alvarez. Pedro seems to make a lot of third outs.

    • I haven’t researched it, but it seems like generally with a left-hander pitching Byrd has been 4th, and with a right-hander it’s Pedro.

  34. What a way to get out of inning, nice play by Pedro on run down to get Aoki and than perfect throw to Walker to get Lucroy trying to get extra base, nice defense.

  35. Nice job on the rundown! Not previously a Pirate speciality.

  36. Big punch out by Morton who wisely pitched around Schafer to go after the pitcher. Time for the bats to bust loose a little.

  37. And Barmes with a beautiful double! :)

  38. Barmes unleashes his inner beast.

  39. Barmes offends some, not really sure why, but today he is 2-2, scored the Pirates run, and now is on 3rd with one out with good baserunning. Hope he keeps offending .

    • and Tabby hits Barmes in!!!

    • And Tabata with another base hit and RBI. He could probably hit 1.000 the rest of the season and some would still dog this player… and prefer lil Elvis. again not really clear why. He has been very good the past few weeks.

      • TIME to knock this change-up loving AAAA scrub out of the ball game… 2 on, 1 out, CUTCH, PEDRO and the BYRD man due up… THIS IS THE INNING. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

        • LOVE Cutch, but his approach, swinging for HR on first-pitch changeup really killed the mojo this inning…let’s hope Byrd can come through and pick up this offense.

  40. Barmes (2 hits, 2 runs) and Tabata (2 hits, 2 rbi) are getting it done today.

  41. it’s the Jose Tabata Show today, his second RBI rip gives Buccos first lead of day. Hehas held his own in the lead off spot for Buccos!

  42. Final

    Reds 7
    Cards 2

Chance to retake sole possession of first.

  43. And Good Time Charlie gets Rammy.

  44. UGH horrible SO by Morneau

  45. and Charlie burned two in a row :)

  46. Morton curve balls the Brewers to death in the sixth with three K’s as he is once again putting together a dominant outing. His rise has given the Pirates a fearsome top 3 in the rotation.

  47. Charlie with a nice hit :)

    • When you look at his head shot, he just seems like a goofy kid, but when you see his whole frame you wonder why he’s not launching moon shots every AB. #notsurprised

  48. I don’t know what Tabby had for lunch today, but he should have it tomorrow, too :)

  49. WALKER!!!!!!!

    5-1 good guys!

  50. The Pittsburgh Kid with a no doubter to right center, three run blast his 10th of year and Buccos blow game open, 5-1.

  51. Like that Pedro double to center for no other reason than it might get him going again.

  52. No excuse for that to happen, ever.

  53. Clearly Hurdle’s fault — should have put his tall SS in the game.

  54. Pedro is young and I do hope big things are in his future, but Scott Boras’ client needs some help in the ‘focus and approach’ department. I think he has the baseball IQ and the intelligence, but that play that cost a run just now was just pure lazy and lack of focus…and his atbats a lot of the time are numbingly weak mental approaches.

Maybe Boras has the offseason regimen to help his young star cash in, if he can get a little better in approach, the sky is the limit.

    • Why is this up to Scott Boras?

      • Guess I’m hoping that Pedro will respond to who has the most vested interest in him figuring it out (other than himself). He does not seem to be responding to coaching and instruction by the staff (most notably the hitting approaches).

Boras seems to believe his players are worth millions and have no flaws, so for that to be true, he needs to fix the flaws.

        • Petey is what he is.

          • i am afraid you may be right, but I’m hoping no one accepts that answer…mostly Petey himself, but also his representatives and the Pirates staff…. he has the physical gifts, so if he can figure out the head part, he could get to another level. I think back to Cutch, year 2 and how he found another level (or 2) even though he was pretty good back then… I guess I’m just hoping against hope that Pedro can do the same.

            • By all accounts he has a great work ethic. But sometimes he seems to just give away at bats — if so, that ought to be correctable

  55. 6 outs to go. No more Mickey Mouse plays.

  56. Justin Morneau looks like he could be Jay Bells’ brother…the resemblance in the face is there….just sayin’

  57. Barmes has scored 2 of the Bucs 5 runs; Tabby has driven in 2 and scored 1… good thing Clint Hurdle doesn’t consult the blog for lineup suggestions.

  58. And Watson carries the 8th with a 1-2-3 inning. With Grilli about to return, the Pirates can easily turn these into six inning games.

  59. Nice double by Cutch to start something lol

  60. If they can get to one, a threesome of AJ, CM & FL backed by this bullpen in a best of 5, should make for lots of hitter anxiety. Only the Dodgers can match this, imho.

  61. Steelers signed former Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko to their active roster.

There’s a joke here somewhere. I’m just struggling to find it.

  62. Behind another masterful start from Charlie Morton who goes seven strong, a three run HR from Neil Walker and a Mark Melancon save the Bucs sink the Brewers in the opener of this three game series 5-2 and there was nooooooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Pirates improve to 80-57, eclipsing their 2012 win total and move into sole possession of FIRST PLACE in the NL Central. The Pirates are now 35-32 on the road and 11-6 versus the Brew Crew this year.

The Pirates will go for their second consecutive series win tomorrow night when Gerrit Cole toes the rubber for the Bucs.

Let’s Go Bucs and Let’s Go PITT!

    • ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  64. Riase the Jolly Hippo!

    Nice game!
Need to sweep, so we build a cushion.

    GO PITT!!!!!!!!

  65. Thank you, Buccos, for exceeding my expectation for total victories with a month remaining in the season.

    Bring it all home!

  66. SAY IT LOUD! I’M A PIRATE FAN AND I’M PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  67. Wonder when our latest acquisition is going to get started? Morneau seems to be trying to pull everything much like Jones. If he starts hitting for the Bucs like he was the last month for the Twins, that would be super. I hope Cole is on his game tomorrow. GO, BUCS!!!
