Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Sunday column: They’re O’Brien’s Lions now

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

UNIVERSITY PARK — Morning, Lunatics …

>> The Sunday column from my first football trip to Beaver Stadium struggles to draw parallels for all that is cool about Bill O’Brien and all he’s meant to Penn State.

Here’s what fullback Pat Zerbe had to say on that topic …

And here’s some of Christian Hackenberg after his 333 yards …

Game coverage of the home-opening rout of Eastern Michigan is by Chris Adamski.

Of course, I’ll be at the Steelers’ opener today, as well.

Everything you need can be found on our Steelers page from Alan Robinson, Ralph Paulk, Mark Kaboly and Joe Starkey. My own prediction came in the Friday column.

Excellent article! PSU def found the right man in O’Brien. I hope he sticks around for the long run. If he can build a winner now, just imagine what he’ll do in the future! As for the small but annoying crowd, the fb comment at the end pretty much sums up your point. They just don’t get it. Great job DK!

    DK: Thanks, Skillie!

  2. JoeyBats says:

O.Line needs to stay healthy and keep Ben healthy so he can do “his thing.” Not looking for much from this offense until Heath Miller and LeVeon Bell can get into the lineup healthy.
Excited to see what the “D” can do today….looking forward to see if they can contain RB Johnson with a revamped “Casey-less and Harrison-less” front 7.
It IS the Titans… IS the Home Opener….and expecting a Steelers win.

  6. Wild Bill says:

DK, thanks for the column and for coming to State yesterday. What O’Brien has done with the challenge he faced is indeed astonishing.

Last year, before he had ever coached at game at State, I played at a benefit golf tournament that had a silent auction with it. One of the items was a Penn State football with Coach O’Brien’s signature: “We are…Bill O’Brien”. I outbid everyone for it, and I now consider it to be one of my favorite memorabilia items.

Given what he’s been able to do with the restrictions of everyone’s favorite organization, the NCAA, imagine what lies ahead for the program beyond them.

    DK: Very kind, Bill!

  7. radio wave says:

A week ago, it was noted that the Pirates would not pitch Morton in a critical game. Today is that game.

  8. Wild Bill says:

Let’s bring a positive vibe to the Pirates and Steelers today and hopefully, we’ll be rewarded!

  10. Tom P. says:

With 21 games left, the Pirates magic number to clinch the second wild card is 13 (vs. Arizona and Washington), to host the wild card game is 20 (vs. Reds), and to win the division is 22 (vs. Cardinals).

  11. Lad 9 says:

Heading to he Steeler game now, but my heart will be in St Louis. Remember the bitter complaining on this blog last Sunday about the Pirates inability to sweep a series. Lets do that to the Cardinals today. Go Buccos!! I will try to bring one back to get the Steelers going – please do the same, blogmaties!

  12. Wild Bill says:

    Right on, Lad!

  13. Tom P. says:

The Braves and Dodgers have lost 3 in a row, just like the Pirates. The Tigers are 5-5 in their last 10, just like the Pirates. The Pirates have gained a game on the Cardinals in the last 10 games.

  14. radio wave says:

This year is the 50th anniversery of President Kennedy’s death. On that weekend, the NFL played it’s games including the Giants at Dallas. I wonder if that will be mentioned tonight?

  15. pattonbb says:

He’s been the best Pirate starting pitcher for a month now, and it’s not even close.
