  3. Cole does not get a break facing Darvish.

Currently, it’s 98 degrees in Arlington, TX.

  4. Will be interesting to see how Cole handles the heat down here…supposed to be near 100 for all three games…

  5. Never fear, I am here – in Arlington tonight. I have a seat in the front row beside the Pirates dugout, and I am here to personally guarantee an end to this 82 nonsense so that we can all get on with getting to 92. Or 95. And the postseason. And the World Series.

Bucs can’t lose when I’m in the house.

    Go Buccos!

  6. I’ll be live tweeting, with photos, from down here in Arlington for anyone interested in following along with win #82 tonight who can’t be here in person.

@JoeRozsa on Twitter for anyone interested.

  7. It’s good to see the Trib taking content ideas from prominent baseball blogs like Fangraphs. Definitely provides perspective not usually found in standard print.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/pittsburgh-turns-the-power-out/

  8. Oh for God’s sakes, Barmes AGAIN?

Looks like Clint really wants to lose. If that’s the case Clint, quit wasting the service time of Cole, and pitch some of the other jabronis.

  9. Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu’ve got to be kidding me.

I don’t like this match up at all. If it weren’t for the ridiculous year Sherzer is having in Detriot, Darvish would be the AL Cy Young.

On the flip side, the Rangers lineup doesn’t look so terrifying with Josh Hamilton (almost typed Harrison) in the lineup.

    Beltre tough though.

  10. Jones hitting eighth, huh?

    I guess tenth was taken.

  11. Barmes has started 2 games in the 4 game losing streak. And he’s not the f’ing DH, he’s the pitcher in the lineup.

  12. Amazing how devious and secretive NH and CH have been regarding a mere “jammed finger” sustained by Marte a month ago. Try reading dislocation or fracture!

  13. Sorry for the intended double post

Every time we think the club is gonna melt

    Beat Em Bucs

No one said this would be easy

    Nor should it be

  14. Man, this is a MUCH BIGGER SERIES against the Rangers than it should have been. Rough, rough weekend.

Starting pitching MUST come through this time through the rotation.

And Pedro needs to start recognizing curveballs out of the pitcher’s hand.

Pirates have had their break———after defense AND hitting AND starting pitching AND relievers all go walkabout at the same time in St. Louis, it’s time to buckle down against a tough pitcher in a foreign park and reassert themselves as the team to beat in the National League.

Inspired play from McCutch, a dinger with guys on from Pedro, and taking the gloves out to the field with them should be just the right medicine for what ails the 81-win Bucs.

Who said 82 does not matter?! And 94 would matter even more!!

    • Groat, I humbly disagree

This has been a big series for weeks

      They all are now

Lets see what happens, Sept 9th and there is still relevant baseball in the burgh

  15. Who should bat higher in the order a .231 hitting or a .275 hitter?

  16. “Site: Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texass”

    I hope DK is right.

  17. i just wish someone would absolutely, 100%, guarantee me that it is a complete impossibility that we can go 2-for-september.

  18. That little incompetent Presley had two more hits yesterday, out of 5 the Twins got, and he’s only batting .389. What the heck would the Pirates do with that kind of production?

We got slew-footed Morneau hitting .261. So far NH, you can cancel your trip to NY to receive your “Exec. of the Year Lapel Pin”

  19. If you are watching Wash – Phila on MNF, I think we are seeing a new trend for no-huddle offense.

It is most interesting and IMO evolutionary

    • It didn’t work in college. I don’t think it will work in the pros. .

But it is interesting to watch.

      • Ben wishes he had that Eagles offensive line. And, they are not #1 and 2 draft choices like our brain trust has chosen.
Why can other teams find offensive linemen and the Steelers remain bad year after year???

  20. Sarcastically, I think the AP jinxed the Pirates. They ran a story that 81 wins broke the streak — and ran it Saturday morning (the day after the first loss to the Cardinals).

On a more serious note, I just don’t like the trend lines. What is it — 11 wins out of the last 28? Nothing seems going right, except Cutch’s hitting.

And, we could say there is no help coming. We had three minor league teams in the playoffs and they all lost in the first round. For AAA Indianapolis had the best International League record and got swept. And, in short season A, Jamestown led its division almost until the end, when they faced the St. Louis affiliate (last year’s Pirate affiliate State College) and lost all but one of the 7 games they played — and then won the first playoff game and lost the last two (and the series) — the same way the Pirates lost to the Cardinals — no pitching and no hitting.

  21. If you swing at balls out of zone, Yu suck.

    Tabata…. SMH

  22. If nobody has already, I’m going to give this Rangers kid the nickname “The Twirling Darvish.”

  23. consequence of putting Pedro 6th… won’t see fastballs with no one on base.

  24. So, how old is this Darvish dude? he can pitch.

  25. Not going to be pretty tonight vs Darvish….3 K’s already…

  26. Nadal destroying Djokavic in the US Open.

  27. In all of my 50+ years in watching baseball I can’t recall seeing anyone who takes more called third strikes than Russell Martin.

  28. Cole is on so far tonight…using his offspeed stuff effectively…,

  29. Washington leads the Mets 9-0 in the 5th inning.

  30. Darvish is killing this lineup with the offspeed stuff…

  31. Dear Hippo,

Who is this “blog posse” that you mention. Please elucidate.

  32. Am I right that no one has ever scored a run off this guy ?

  33. Cole is REALLY on tonight….using the offspeed stuff beautifully…

  34. Brandie, on both of your entries intended for me, I am in complete agreement.

I just got involved in a little word game with AW, which simply changed direction. I am aware of your sentiments regarding the three gentlemen I mentioned; when they start winning and are serious about it, I could take a different view.

None of the three have shown me any consistency that they know what they are doing!

  35. And 2 beautiful k’s for Cole :)

  36. Ranger radio team wondering why Darvish is not using his fastball tonight…haha.

  37. OK, just jumpin in to this here fun blog. Don’t have time to read all the above stuff, so I’m starting from scratch and will be in and out for the next hour.

Been thinking of this all day after the worst possible sports weekend. Pirates swept, Steelers yuck, Gators give the game away (Sorry, I’m an alum). Penn State won. Only salivation from the weekend.

Anyways, we are in a pennant race. No epic collapse III. Ain’t gonna happen. If you ain”t in your 50′s you probably can”t remember how tense a pennant race can be. It will wear you out. But it is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Enjoy it, don’t over analize it. Just root like hell. Most of all enjoy it.

  38. This offense is hopeless…10 in a row retired by Darvish…

    • Yeah, they have become one of the worst hitting teams in baseball again. The way they are playing, Washington will catch them next week.and that is really depressing.

  39. Pitchers duel. Garret is holding his own. Mistake pitches are going to be the key. OR a swing by Pedro.

  40. Nice play Pedro…

  41. The Pirates have scored in 4 of the last 31 innings. In each of the innings in which they scored, they began the inning trailing by at least 5 runs.

  42. Nice throw from the Byrd man!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. Cole looks terrific tonight. Unfortunately, so does Yu. GET A RUN!!

  44. Judging from that last play, sounds like a lot of Bucco fans in the house.

  45. sheesh, so Petey hits into a DP :(

  46. I miss Pedro already.

(Just practicing for the offseason. Won’t be long now!)

  47. Pay close attention to the header at the top of the page. Where it says Site, check the spelling of Texas. Well played, DK! Well played!

  48. I don’t feel good results from this game…Cole is matching Darvish, butttt…

  49. I’ve come to the conclusion that they’ll lose the day they clinch a playoff spot so they can continue to take all the fun out of this.

  50. Too bad there were two outs. Or Jones woulda earned a DP, too.

  51. Cole seems to be getting stronger as this season has progressed…

  52. If I were managing the Pirates, there wouldn’t be a place in my lineup for Sir Whiffs-a-lotte. I would have bet my house that he would either strike out or hit into DP. Why do they keep that worthless hunk of s— on the team? What has happened to this team? Don’t
they want to win any more games? I’m done with that bunch of losers.

  53. This team’s offensive plan hasn’t been good enough for a year and change now.

  54. Sample SAT analogy question:

    Pedro : Pirates :: ____ : Penguins

  55. Cole is the Ace of the Day to pitch the one-game WC.

  56. Another K for Gerrit

  57. This may be Cole’s best outing of the year…

  58. Off the subject, but I love watching Shady McCoy run.

  59. Cole wanted to be the one involved in the team’s winning turnaround…. he’s making a statement tonight.

  60. 33-7 Eagles, seems their coaches know how to pick offensive linemen. Ben is drooling if he is watching!!
Ran 53 plays in the first half.

  61. In fact, Cole is the only one who looks like he cares. Everybody else: strikeout looking, waltz back to the dugout; weak roller DP, “hustle” to first at about 75%, etc. No life. No shirt. No shoes. No Dice. Fast Times ref.

  62. The Pirates again prove to be the perfect cure for a struggling pitcher.

  63. Horrible…

  64. Another nice piece of Pirate baserunning by Tabata.

  65. Wow….hey Neil…you can take the bat off of your shoulder…

  66. Just think…tomorrow night we face Perez, and Weds we face Garza…

  67. Textbook, I say, Textbook hit and run. Baserunner erased.

  68. MY FREAKING GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tabata runs about as quick as Dejan in the cold Winnipeg night and with McCutchen on-deck, that’s just simply stupid.

  69. This is a very impressive performance by Cole tonight under the circumstances. Pretty much knowing if he gives up 1 run, he loses.

  70. The Pirates may never score again. Eagles will run 5,250 offensive plays before the Pirates plate a baserunner again.

  71. What a crazy night in sports. Nadal beats Djokovic. Buck Showalter charged the entire Yankee dugout. Miguel Cabrera gets ejected during his first at bat of the game for saying something to homeplate ump Brian Gorman, which in turn leads to Leyland getting tossed. Professional Wrestling, er I mean NASCAR, has kicked a driver out of their “chase” thingy, added another driver, and fined a race owner almost a half of a million dollars for one of their drivers intentionally wrecking to bring out a caution flag. Robert Griffin cubed looks horrible. Robert Griffin cubed’s defense looks even worse. Gerrit Cole is pitching like Yu Darvish, and Pedro still couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.

  72. I’m trying to come up with a line that combines the Pirate’s hitting and colonoscopies.

Could be worse, though. At least they haven’t fallen behind.

  73. so, is that sinkers Cole is throwing>???

  74. I would be more upset if it was a lesser pitcher stopping the hitless wonders.

  75. uh oh..there’s a walk…

  76. I have tickets for next Tuesday and was thinking there may be a reasonably good chance of it being for Win No. 82 the way things are going.

On the Eagles pounding the Redskins, not a fan of any Philly teams, but with all the lead-up to RG III’s appearance this season (ESPN, NFL Network and otherwise), I cannot say I am disappointed by the score. And it may more a Shanahan reaction than RG III, who I think is very talented.

  77. Darvish has never had a complete game…even as good as he is…

  78. Time to visit the mound….

  79. Also, instead of having Fu-man-chu mustache growing contests, how about firing up the pitching machine and working on hitting the ball.

  80. Oh-oh. The Cole Train has come off the tracks a little…

  81. Nobody up in the Buccos BP….double steal now…

  82. Amen…closed out the inning

  83. Nice job Gerrit!!! Way to pitch out of that jam…I do believe young Mr. Cole is finally starting to really show his potential tonight…

  84. I’m guessing Cole gets one more inning. He’ll be on a soft pitch count until the post-season.

  85. Wheeh! That was pennant race stuff there. Cincy losing. Top of the ninth. Go Cubbies. Go Cutch.

  86. Byrd man!!

  87. This is about when Darvish has petered out in his last few starts…

  88. What do you get when you cross a bird with a tuna?

  89. Petey!!!!!!!

  90. To left center even!!

  91. BOUT time PEDRO!!!!!! 1-0 Buccos!

  92. Way to beat the shift!!

  93. OMG!!!!
    THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!
PEDRO GOT A HIT!! AND, AN RBI!!!

Gotta get packing………. world ending soon. ;)

    1-0 good guys.

  94. See what can happen when you go with the pitch – and don’t roll the left wrist over

  95. “worthless hunk of ____” with the ribeye!

  96. wow…did i just see that?????
    petey????

  97. OK kid, there’s your run.

  98. Ok Gerrit…keep it going…

  99. Going to bottom of ninth, cubbies 2-0 over Reds.

  100. First run given up by Darvish in his last 19 2/3 innings in Interleague play…

  101. Rangers starting to swing and miss now frequently…

  102. Nice pitch Gerrit!!

  103. Oh yes…and looking!

  104. Nice inning…retires the side…

  105. Definitely his best start of the year…

  106. I did not see this coming from Cole at all. Pleasantly surprised.

Now we see Tanner Scheppers. Beat him up.

  107. Time to tack on some runs!!

  108. Tanner’s in the game for Texass! Let’s light him up and show him who he should have signed with.

  109. it’s a final. Cubs beat the Reds 2-0.

  110. Look its Greg Maddux’ brother!

(I’m predicting he has been referred as that since elementary school)

  111. CubsWin! CubsWin!
    Let’s Go Bucs!

  112. Scheppers got beat up in a bar fight earlier this season in Cleveland…

  113. GERRIT COLE BRINGING DA HEAT!!!!!! OW!!!!!

    GIVE ME FUEL!

    GIVE ME FIRE!

GIVE ME SIX MORE TO RETIRE!

  114. woah BARMES with a hit

  115. Cubs Win! Cubs Win! Game up on Reds now.

  116. Any word why Darvish was pulled with only 81 pitches?

  117. Uggghhhh…Tabata back to his old ways…

  118. Bad Tabby! Bad!!! No Tabby snacks for you.

  119. Dear Lord….PLEASE allow Marte to come back healthy very soon…like tomorrow?? :)

  120. Ok Tony…keep it going….

  121. 33,243 in attendance tonight….

  122. Ranger broadcast crew could not believe that Cole was not averaging many strikeouts this season…

  123. 2 down, one more for this inning…

  124. Uh-oh…Morris warming up in the bullpen…

  125. Elementary, my dear Watson :)

  126. Ok Buccos…let’s get some insurance!!

  127. Cole first Pirate rookie to K 9 and not allow a run since Jose DeLeon in ’83…

  128. what the ^&%$ is Walker doing??

  129. Darvish left due to cramping in his right leg…

  130. Trip, trip, Triiiple!!!!

  131. cutch with a trip, trip, triple !!!

  132. My favorite sight in sports. A Cutch triple. Get him in!

  133. Got to LOVE Cutch’s speed. Great triple now get him in!

  134. CUTCH !!!!!!!

  135. Come on Morneau….

    • Can anyone explain why Morneau was batting there????

Did Clint forget Gabby Sanchez, a righty, is on the team and also plays first base????

      Un-freaking-believable!!

  136. Why don’t guys try to bowl over the catchers anymore???

  137. That wasn’t Nick Leyva’s fault.

    Just saying…..

  138. As usual, we can’t make anything easy on ourselves. A second run makes a solo shot worthless. Need a Byrdie to come through some how here.

  139. Ok Marte…just don’t slide head first…

  140. Think these baserunning errors will hurt them in October?

  141. HUGE missed opportunity…

  142. I just told my 12 year old to come in and watch the ninth. I told hem that he could be 32 years old the next time this happens. I told him that I speak from experience.

  143. Mini-Van time!!

  144. Shark time! Shut them down.

  145. I’m just curious why we (I mean you know who) let our newly acquired RBI machine bat against a lefty? Just curious about that decision, that’s all.

  146. What go what a strange phenomenon. You wait for over 20 years before there was interleague play, and you are three outs away from winning number 82 in an American week part.

  147. Not to jinx them, but to pull this out would be huge.

  148. Don’t let Rios get a hold of one…

  149. One more baby!!

  150. Here it is kids.

    One more out to history….

  151. 1 away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  152. Melancon vs. Beltre…big out here….

  153. KK settle, mark

  154. Ok Ryan where’s that range you boasted about

  155. 88888 22222 !
    8 8 2 2 !
    8 8 2 !
    8 8 2 !
    88888 2 !
    8 8 2 !
    8 8 2 !
    8 8 2
    88888 222222 !

  156. Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  157. RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!
    HIPPO!
    NUN!
    MUPPET!
    GHOST!
    GRUMPY OLD MAN!

    82. FINALLY !!!

Now I can get the cake, confetti, and balloons!
Now, we need to keep going……….. not by going 3-15!

    GO BUCS !!!!!!

  158. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you win #82.

    ….fear the Bones….

  159. WOOP WOOP!!!!!!!!!!

  160. WIN NUMBER 82! YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

  161. Anybody want to make a mathematical argument?

  162. RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER… and ladies and gentlemen, that is the ACE of the 2014 Pirates staff that was flat-out awesome tonight.

  163. Eighty f’ng two!!!!! Tearing up.

  164. Get out of here LOSING!!! 82 wins baby! MORE PLEASE!

  165. Greg Brown just quoted Gerald Ford.

  166. With the way 98% of the wins have come this year, fitting that it would be a 1-0 score. :)

  167. Going to break out the Crown Royal Black. Missed JRay tonight.

  168. HOLLY S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  169. An entire tri state area can exhale. Onward and upward.

  170. Congratulations Buccos! Win number eighty-two. And much more work to be done.

Happy for all of us who follow the Bucs as well!

  171. I’ll TAKE IT! Woo-Hoo! Up here, everybody! A win!

  172. Took a while, perhaps fittingly, but 82 has finally come.

  173. ITS OVER!! Way to go Bucs! Now, lets get into the playoffs and make some noise there. A great pitching performance by Cole. A 3 hit shutout. The pitcher of our future ends 20 years of horrid baseball.

  174. APB FOR WAR HORSE!!!!!!!

GET UP AND DANCE MY ACROSS THE POND FRIEND!

    WHAT A GEM!

  175. Finally, an ace in the hole comes through. How many 1-0 games can we win?

  176. Raise the Jolly Roger!!!!! We finally reached that mystical and magical 82. 83 looks even better.

  177. Finally… I can say this….

    Raise the Jolly Roger!

  178. Now, can we end the other streak? 34 years?
    Please?

  179. Down here in Texas, we actually watched the Rangers broadcast. I’m telling you their TV guys are SO bad, it actually made me yearn for Greg, Walkie and … their answer to Robby was even horsier than our Robby! I think they were pretty impressed with Cole.

    • So your saying as an announcer Steve Busby makes a pretty good pitcher.

      • Milo, Busby is terrible! He sounds like a guy doing bread commercials! And their color guy mumbles his Lone Ranger delivery so bad (he really sounds like a poor substitute for the Lone Ranger) you can hardly hear him.

Texas has this strange set-up where their color guys take turns at play-by-play and that’s what Busby was tonight. And, yes, he was a great pitcher back in the day!

Their guy Eric Nadel is good, but he must’ve been on radio tonight.

    • Bay…down here in Texas too…was listening to the radio broadcast….

      • Steelag, the wife would have been happy to do that, just to have our guys, too. But it’s the first chance we’ve ever had to SEE the Bucs play a Texas team since mlb.tv figures we’re in both Astros and Rangers markets. We’re holed up in a motel with cable for the time being.

        • I’m going to the game tomorrow….

          • Have a great time! We thought about it. But it’s just far enough away (two hours from Tyler, where we live); and been hot enough … sorta enjoying seeing it on TV, having to put up with that boring Steve Busby, and his mumbling color guy notwithstanding!

  180. Cole’s effort tonight is the stuff of aces!!

  181. Maybe this will remove some pressure that I’m sure the players would not admit to.

  182. Write some cool stuff DK. 1-0 in a pennant race. And win number 82. Write brother write, I’m sure you got something really good going on in that head of yours,

  183. ahhhh..now I can relax and go to bed.

    Nice job Cole.
    Nice job Cutch and Byrd.
    Nice job Great White Shark
    :)

  184. Cutch is class personified.

  185. Congrats to the Pirate players and management and to us the long suffering fans.

  186. Good night Mary Edgerley, wherever you are.

  187. Way to send the scourge of losing packing!

  188. Dream sweet dreams Bucs fans, I’m out ;)

  189. Will now go to sleep with the Fan post game. So happy you all accepted me and I had so many to share this with. Hugs!

  190. Night Friends, and sleep well! 83 and then some coming next.

  191. SIMPLY THE BEST. The Pittsburgh natives of the Jersey Shore here are partying tonight on good ‘ol 82!!! Luv it

  192. That clubhouse just exhaled. I heard it all the way up here.
Now concentrate, and win the division.

In honor of Biz, Go like 60!

    Everyone have a great night.

  193. My son & daughter-in-law just called me from Oakmont. They’re popping champagne! I’m just smiling in relief. THANK GOD…it’s really OVER!!!!

  194. Before i go to bed…………. DANCE !!!

  195. High-fives to all those media members celebrating the Pirates 82nd win.

Hopefully Kristy won’t report me to the blogger world.

  196. Congrats to the Bucs and all of their fans who suffered through any portion of these 20 years. 81 was important. 82 is a little more important. Every win from here on out is very important. Here’s to about a dozen more in this regular season!

  197. 82. I honestly had doubts if this would really happen. And don’t let anyone fool you, this matters.

The number 21 will never be negatively associated with this team.

  198. The Rangers post game show is going nuts over Gerrit Cole….haha…their host said: “Gerrit Cole….OH MY GOD…”

  199. Thank you Jesus.
