  1. Game number 144 and the 143rd different lineup.

  2. Liriano – Sanchez matchup again

    Beat Em Bucs

    • Beats having Buck. And they have experience together from Liriano’s rehab. I’d prefer Martin, but he can’t catch every game (unfortunately).

      • Have the Pirates won a game yet with Buck as catcher? For a guy with a rep for good blocking skills, he has whiffing on a lot of balls in the dirt. (and by whiffing, I mean missing with his glove).

  3. Rob Biertempfel‏@BiertempfelTrib
Good news for #Pirates: Starling Marte (hand) is taking swings in batting cage on field right now.

Now that the Pirates have won #82, those of you who “wagered” on the line at the beginning of the year will see those “wagers” factored in on the next standings update.

Makes my job a helluva lot easier when I don’t have to hunt to find everyone’s “wagers”

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

    Tonight’s Line
Total STRIKEOUTS THROWN by Francisco Liriano in tonight’s game
    Line is 7.5

    GOOD LUCK!!!

    Wild Card Magic Number: 12

  5. Texas is misspelled again. Feeling a bold reaming coming on.

  6. I think a lot of us had the same thought: that win last night no doubt loosened the club up. Hopefully, a win streak will ensue.

Did anyone notice that “Quick Pitch” on MLB Network featured a shot of the Trib’s wonderful 82 cover ?

  7. Love this lineup!

    • I can’t tell if that is sarcasm. Some will hate it. I actually don’t mind it. I understand the lefty match ups but find it a little odd that we get to play with a DH and we have the likes of Walker, Jones and Morneau on our bench.

      • The only thing I find odd is that Hurdle didn’t just go all the way.

If Walker, Jones, and Morneau don’t belong (and they don’t), then Pedro doesn’t either.

Putting Harrison at 3B, Barmes at SS, and Mercer at 2B improves your defense without harming offense.

        • Maybe Hurdle doesn’t want to sit him when his rbi won last night’s game?

          • More likely he doesn’t want to sit him because they are still insisting that he is an every day player even though his splits are awful.

I don’t know about JaHay playing third improving your defense though. I get that Petey commits some errors. but I don’t think JaHay gets to as many balls as Petey. Of course you add Barmes at short which is a defensive upgrade to Mercer so maybe it is a wash.

      • Walker and Jones don’t hit lefties too well. Perfectly understandable. A DH is usually someone who can’t field. Or in this case, Martin, who can’t catch everyday. Because of it being the AL, it is curious about Morneau, but maybe Clint was reading the morning blog. ;-)

        • Morneau can’t hit lefties any better than Jones. And I mean Jones at his best. They showed his average against lefties when he played a lefty reliever the other night and they were awful. Sanchez hits lefties very well. I was just asking a coworker about this platoon this morning.

I agree with NMR though. Why not sit Alvarez as well?

  8. I wonder if the Steelers will next cross above .500 in 2033.

    I know. I know. It’s a Pirates thread.

We downtrodden football fans need to stop making everything about the Steelers.

  9. Looking back through our scores from this year and I believe I found we are 5-1 in games that end 1-0. Seems that would be close to even in most cases and points to the great job our pitching staff has done this year.

  10. lomg time lurker first time caller- tonight the Pirates game is the free game for the folks out of the area- Battle Creek, MI here- someone posted this before so I could catch a game- wanted to do the same

  11. Cubbies up 2-0 in the bottom of the second!

  12. Not many posters. Is there a Steeler game on?

  13. Something to remember about Liriano’s up and down streak. All 3 of the bad starts have come on the road.

  14. Biz! Add Battlecreek Michigan to the Lunatics’ list :)

  15. It’s amazing – the evening games are just underway and my two favorite Pirates (oops one is an ex-Pirate) already have a hit

  16. Geez if it weren’t for double plays, Tabby wouldn’t have anything to hit into

  17. Sanchez forgot to flash the Z.
    We’re doomed.

  18. Sanchez needs to get his head out of his behind:

    - Should’ve let the bunt go foul
    - Should’ve advanced to third
    - Should’ve slid.

  19. Did Sanchez touch home yet? I missed it

  20. Even when we score, there’s unintended drama.

  21. Wow, nice pitches to Kinsler. Looks like Dr Jeckel is on the mound tonight.

  22. Nice rundown Francisco!

  23. Frankie L. is looking good tonight. Dang it really feels good to be rooting for a winning team after this many years.

  24. Laura just told W he can have ice cream if he’s good.

  25. Go Frankie. The defense seems solid tonight!

  26. jordy is as good as benched for tomorrow

  27. Jordy thinks he’s Cutch tonight

  28. CUTCH again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2-0 good guys.

  29. At least Cutch came through to get the first legitimate run in. I’ll take the freebie too, but at least they can blame everything on the umps. Great call by the first base ump earlier, too – the right call.

  30. It looks like Mercer would run faster if he got his arms & legs in sync when running
His arms fly all over the place when he runs

  31. And the hits keep coming !!!

    3-0 good guys!

  32. Leyva = Third Base Coach of the Year

  33. Hee! Hee! Hee! Leyva waves a man home.

  34. Leyva aggressive there. I thought Cutch was dead. Miserable throw. Love it!

  35. Cutch with the speed scores run #3, but should have been dead at home with better throw.

    That felt even worse!

  37. oh. My. Goodness. Wild pitch…another run!

  39. I have a feeling that AJ Pierzynski, who is not the most stable of characters and one of the biggest horses patoots in MLB, will blow his stack and get tossed if he has to deal with any more adversity today. He looks ready to erupt.

  40. You just insulted horses patoots, mister !

  41. You just insulted horses patoots, mister !

  42. I am always saying that most throws from the outfield are horrible. Why outfielders aren’t more accurate and / or throw harder is beyond me. It should be taught and practiced.

If that throw from RF is anywhere near the plate, Cutch is a dead duck

  43. Can I throw in a c’mon Mets while we’re at it ?

  44. Gotta make that play.

  45. After picking on him in earlier posts, it is worth noting that Sanchez looks pretty good behind the plate. It also appears he can hit a little. At worst, a very capable back-up, no matter where he keeps his head.

  46. Absolutely hate the overuse of the controlled slide.

  47. Cutch tries to catch that as a basket catch and he makes the catch, instead they get a run for a 4-1 Bucs lead.

  48. 2-0 USA in soccer.
The British announcer is having a heart attack describing the goal………….

  49. If the Nationals keep this up & make the playoffs, Jayson Werth has to be in the MVP discussion.

    • Sure, he’s in the discussion. Right behind Cutch, Molina, Freeman, Goldschmidt, Kershaw, and Puig.

      • Smart money’s sure on the 1st two guys you listed.

        • I agree, but those hated Braves might only be in second place without Freeman.

          • You’re listening to too much of their propaganda down there. At one point tonight, Werth led the NL in batting average, slugging & OPS. He’s quietly having a great season.

            • Guilty as charged. Freeman’s no MVP, but he quickly becoming one of my favorite Braves. Actually, he’s my only favorite Brave. Well, since Bob Horner left.

Worth is a stud, but doesn’t he take about a month-month and a half off each season?

  50. Jarvis Jones starting next Monday. No surprise there. Worilds was awful Sunday, buried on consecutive running plays on the Titans TD, to the point he was actually out of the TV picture when each play was over.

    Not to be critical.

  51. Strong performance being turned in by Liriano tonight, even better it is on the road. In line for his 16th win in 23 starts just impressive.

Pirates makeshift lineup of all righties plus Pedro does its job and knocks Perez out of game early giving bats a few chances at Ranger pen to put game away.

Strong bounce back from a team that did not play good ball in St Louis, but may gain some momentum as they close in on the upcoming 11 game home stand.

  52. friends I’m gonna watch rest of the game upstairs…I’m tired. Catch yinz tomorrow…go Bucs!

  53. Cards first hit of the night comes in 6th and is a Holliday two run HR.

    Cards 2, Brewers 0 Top 7

Cubs pounding Reds 9-0, Reds about to drop second consecutive at home versus lowly Chicago and lost their starter Cingrani early in game with back flare up.

  54. A Starling Marte sighting, nice to see him back out there and contributing, SB #36.

  55. No time to experiment with Grilli. Wilson pitched a satisfactory 7th inning and should have remained in the game.

  56. C’mon, Tony.

  57. I’m gonna say that Marlon Byrd probably saved a run the way he just played those 2 balls. Stuff that doesn’t show up in the box score.

  58. Watson comes up huge!

Think maybe Sean Lee could help the Pirates.

  59. Tony Watson—unsung hero.

  60. Now let’s get #22 up there with some guys on base. Pad that RBI total for the voters.

  61. “Nice” defense on that bunt by the rangers…………. hee hee hee hee.

    Jordy with 4 hits tonight.
We will next see him next week………….

  62. What the hey was that play by Texass. No one covering first?

  63. shiny happy people..

  64. Just a great piece of hitting by Cutch who takes outside pitch and pokes it to right for his third hit and third RBI of night. Big add on run.

  65. I was getting annoyed at the shifts on McCutchen and I see he did the wise thing.

I wish he would think right-center every time up. His average would be 15-20 points higher, particularly hits given away early in the season when he was in an extreme “pull-happy” mode.

    • So he would be hitting .339-.344 instead of .324? I don’t mess with him.

      • Yes, that would be the math.

The point was not to suggest “messing” with him. It is merely an observation that, for periods during a season, he falls in love with his “quick hands / quick bat” approach, rolling over for groundouts to the left side or, worse yet, strikeouts, PARTICULARLY on pitches on the outer half of the plate.

I know you pay careful attention so you have seen that is where most pitchers have been pitching him because “the book” right now is that is where he is least likely to do damage. If he takes those outer half pitches to the right side consistently, then he’s a consistent .340 hitter every year (barring injury). You could book it.

        • . . . I could also throw in that, with this same approach, he would have an additional 7-10 homers and 20 RBI by now, but I don’t want to provoke you.

  66. I think we three hitting coaches have a consensus.

  67. WHOA!!

That guy in the blue shirt was NOT a good representative of Buc nation!

  68. Raise the Jolly Hippo!

Bucs played more relaxed this evening, and now are getting back on track.

In honor of Biz…………. Go Like 60! And, win another WS.

  69. Someone commented about this earlier but Tony Sanchez, in this game at least, has looked much more comfortable behind the plate. The Russ Martinizing is clearly having the desired effect on him.

  70. Just pulled it. How’s this for timing?? Let the party begin!!

  71. Behind six solid innings from Francisco Liriano who earns win #16, a three RBI night from Andrew McCutchen who continues his MVP case, and a second consecutive save from Mark Melancon, the Bucs trip up the Rangers once again taking the middle game of the set 5-4 and there was noooooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Pirates improve to 83-61, 4-4 on this nine game road trip and 8-3 against teams from the AL West. The Bucs remain just 1 game back of the Cards in the Central and 8 games up for a playoff spot.

The Pirates will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon when AJ Burnett takes the hill for the Pirates.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  72. Sweet win! Beltre is a very tough out.

  73. ….fear the Bones….

  74. Too close for comfort. Neverett and Walk are making my knuckles bleed with all the knocking on wood.

The Jolly Roger flies in Europe tonight!

  76. Raise it! Go for the sweep tomorrow undoubtedly without Melancon. Go like 60! Big win.

  77. Wow! 20 years since a pennant race. Forgot how much fun it is. Ain’t like a close game in May. Wow!

  78. The highlight of the game may have been Cutch’s smart swing driving the grounder into right field. One of his best at bats! Just enough.

  79. “We had ‘em by a gnats eyelash” Rest in peace Bob Prince. Best announcer ever.

  80. God Bless Bob Prince….

  81. I was at the game!! Bucco fans in full force!!

  82. No doubt the most UNNERVING win of the year!

  83. 900 posts today on both threads!

Not a record, but that is pretty darn awesome. Thanks for the forum DK and the Trib.

  84. Finish the series. Finish the road trip. No going through the motions getaway day bs.

  85. Sign I saw from a Bucco fan waking out of the Ballpar: “Sid Bream has just left the building!”….I had to explain it to my Rangers fan friend…haha.

  86. Frankie didn’t have his best stuff, but he got some big outs…

  87. I really thought Cutch had enough in his first at-bat…sooooo close to a HR…
