  1. Brandie says:

    First!!! Yes!!!

No Barmes to p*$s people off, though I am pretty sure the anti-Mercer among us will have something to chirp about. :-)

  2. radio wave says:

Reds are beating Brewers 6 to 3 in the seventh-inning

  3. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Makes my job a helluva lot easier when I don’t have to hunt to find everyone’s “wagers”

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

  4. John Lease says:

It’s OK Brandie, 24/7 reported that Mercer learned how to play short from Barmes. So if he does well, it’s Barmes credit, if he does not, he wasn’t paying enough attention…

  5. Bob Hasis says:

Yeah, and someone needs to tell me what angles are being contemplated, when a one-hopper bounces right past you because you have no reaction. What say you Mr Barmes

  6. Brandie says:

Posing a very interesting question Mr. Hasis. Mr. Barmes, response?

  7. JohninOshkosh says:

Oakland with a chance to beat the Rangers.

I would love to see a Oak/PBC WS.

Two “small market” teams and a battle of the former 70’s powers.

  8. JohninOshkosh says:

    Lets Go Bucs!!

  14. Brandie says:

Seriously, that happens I am all in for a Look and the Gang / Sister Sledge Celebration concert proclaiming the Buccos champs! Onward for World Series championship number 6!

  15. Brandie says:

May I have 25 on the under please Mr. Playoffs!

  16. Karen22 says:

    100 – UNDER

  17. defil21 says:

BTW hometown is Washington, PA, but I call home for now in Fredericksburg, VA.

Long time Lurker. You guys sure do crack me up.

  18. Good lineup.

Now a gem from Cole and some hits and a good night at the yard.

  19. Naje says:

How about: you know next to nothing about baseball….?

  20. radio wave says:

    My Red Sox vs. Bucs.

  21. defil21 says:

Cole sure has been dealing lately. That gem he pitched against Darvish the other night was his best outing yet, and hopefully he can build off of that these last 3 starts of his.

  22. defil21 says:

  23. Brandie says:

Have to err on the side of caution. That’s a bummer.

  24. Brandie says:

I got goosebumps from that outing.

  25. Dadtackular says:

    100 on the under

  26. defil21 says:

Thanks! Hopefully that outing is a sign of things to come with Cole.

  27. radio wave says:

    Final reds win 7-3.

  28. Karen22 says:

    Hey, Ms. Brandie!

Every time I think about last night’s game I get grumpy again! I still can’t believe Grilli is “rehabbing” with games on the line. If his fastball, still stuck at 91, doesn’t make an immediate reappearance, he should be shut down like Wandy. No more tryouts. Too much on the line now.

  29. Karen22 says:

Gotta take care of our own business tonight!

    Cole Train!

  30. Arriba Wilver says:

100 on the UNDER, please, Playoffs.

Back to what brung us here.

  31. Brandie says:

Winning and playoffs really changes everything!

  32. Arriba Wilver says:

    What’d I do?

  33. Brandie says:

    Love. Peace. And Cole!

  34. JRay3 says:

Good afternoon to the window, important game for Bucs tonight after losing a game to Cards yesterday.

    100 on the UNDER

    Thanks and Go Bucs!

  35. Brandie says:

    Guilty conscience, Heigh ho Wilver?

  36. Brandie says:

Who said Cole was environmentally unfriendly?

  37. Bob Hasis says:

    That is your best response?

  38. Baywatch says:

Getting down for the pre-game VICTORY nap!

  39. Brandie says:

    Sounds exhausting!

  40. Drew71 says:

My foursome today included the nephew of THE Jimmy Piersall as well as a retired minor league pitcher. They could play. Big hitters. It was a scramble and needless to say, we used exactly zero of my drives.

  41. radio wave says:

    Not watching Bama?

  42. Chuck H says:

The St.Louis Cardinals possess what is called dumb luck. The Mariners had them shut
out on 4 hits until, somehow the Cards tied it up and then won it on a passed ball with the bases loaded in the 10th. The Bucs could have scored a run to tie, but someone stole their bats for the last two innings. GO, BUCS!!!

  43. MadTurk says:

    Not even from the cart?

  44. JD says:

    100 on the under please.

    Go Bucs!

  45. Arriba Wilver says:

Not even from the 19th hole?

  46. Drew71 says:

    Watching. Not even drinking.

  47. Bill Born says:

    100 on the under Please

  48. “That was yesterday and yesterday’s gone” as “the streak”

    Chad and Jeremy

    (back in my day)

  49. Ghost says:

I did see Ron Jeremy once, if that counts…

  50. Isn’t he the atheist? No, that doesn’t count.

  51. Stuart says:

Playoffs, please give me 100 on the under please.

PS here’s a scenario for ya: Starter leaves the game with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Relief pitcher gives up a double on the first pitch. The two earned runs are charged to the starter. How does that fit into your line today? If the reliever then puts out the fire, he technically hasn’t given up any earned runs (of his own). Does he qualify for the under?

  52. Brandie says:

My apologies. Not his mother’s best looking project.

  53. Baywatch says:

One of my favorite songs. I have it on the playlist when I walk each mornin’.

  54. Baywatch says:

Any word on how Jeff Karstens is coming along? Haven’t heard anything in awhile.

  55. Damon says:

100 on the under please – thanks!

  56. Lad 9 says:

100 on the under please. Thank you. Go Buccos! If I was a betting man, I would put the house on the Pirates tonight. I don’t think the Cubs will touch Cole.

  57. Ghost says:

Don’t know if he’s an atheist or not, but I know he’s heard, “Oh my God! Oh my GOD!” a lot.

  58. Baywatch says:

I always liked Jimmy Piersall. Just refreshed my memory with a reading of his life story on Wikipedia. I remember seeing that movie “Fear Strikes Out” as a kid. I figure both Anthony Perkins and Karl Malden were PERFECTLY cast as Piersall and his pushy father.

  59. Brandie says:

    Crimson Wave crushes Saggies!

  60. kr70 says:

100 on the under and thanks

  61. JohninOshkosh says:

    Nicely played, Ghost.

  62. Ghost says:

Yeah, pretty funny-looking now. Back in the day he wasn’t so pudgy and there was hair on the top of his head, though. And then there was his special endowment, the nine-inch nail. ;)
    (No nails in photo.)

  63. Baywatch says:

I kinda see him dressed up like the Marlboro Cowboy for that one!

  64. Ghost says:

It’s amazing how quickly I can drag down a perfectly good game thread. ;)

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

Ghost, if you are going to post pictures of porn stars, I’d rather it not be Ron Jeremy.

  66. Lad 9 says:

The variety you get on this blog. Sports, music, mythology (Agamemnon), literature, news and now independent film making. Long live the Hedgehog!

  67. Lad 9 says:

Johnny, there aren’t enough pluses on my keyboard to second that enough! :)

  68. Playoffs by 2012 says:

If the runs are charged to the relief pitcher, it will count towards the line.

If the runs are charged to the starting pitcher, it will NOT count against the line.

  69. Ghost says:

Fair enough, guys! (Oh, but the possibilities of how I could have responded to this, though…)

    Oh yeah, Go Bucs!

  70. Brandie says:

Why do I feel so slimy?

  71. Brandie says:

Bite your tongue. With a Grumpy Hippo, A Cussing Nun, A Highly Questionable Muppet, Various and Sundry Characters, and Dejan Kovacevic, there is no such thing as a perfectly good game thread.

Heck, with that cast of characters, there is no such thing as productivity.

  72. Ghost says:

As you are Elmo, and Slimey was Oscar the Grouch’s pet worm, I’m not sure.

  73. Irish says:

100 on Under for me, too.
    Is anyone going over???

  74. Thank God, I didn’t make that list either!

  75. I forgot he’s the porn star that’s goofy looking.

Had him mixed up with another atheist.

    My error.

  76. Karen22 says:

Wow…forgot all about him! But I don’t think he figures into the rest of this year at all.

  77. Karen22 says:

Haven’t seen THAT name for awhile! He was a wild one for the Indians when I was a child. Then came the movie “Fear Strikes Out,” and I understood why.

  78. Karen22 says:

You beat me to it. Yes – excellent movie!

  79. Karen22 says:

Back in MY day, too. I love this song!

  80. bman says:

    50 on the UNDER please

  81. JaxBuc says:

Please sir, may I have 100 on the UNDER?

  82. Jandy says:

100 units on the under please!

  83. Jandy says:

Hubs takin me to dinner. Maybe catch yinz later. Go Bucs!

  84. Barb says:

My electric just came back on. I see I didn’t miss anything.

  85. Barb says:

I know I’m late to the party Bay but congrats on your new job. :)

  86. florida steeler says:

Cub announcers just said that Pirates average with RISP (.227) was second lowest only to the Cubs. I knew it was bad but not aware it was that bad!!!!!

  87. Brandie says:

    When did I become Elmo?

  88. Lad 9 says:

Jamie Dixon and family in the park. First row behind the plate. Good evening coach!

  89. Brandie says:

    Ditto on the new job!

  90. pattonbb says:

Well… least they broke up the no hitter.

  91. defil21 says:

I hope he had to “PAY” for his tickets.

  92. florida steeler says:

Geez–this team cannot hit. When the year is over with 90+ wins, we will scratch our heads and ask how the he_ _ did that lousy hitting team ever do so well.

  93. Eric Bowser says:

Jose Tabata – 5 hits to LF over 200 feet at PNC Park

Starling Marte – 16 hits to LF over 200 feet at PNC Park

…. Marte needs to get over the pain and get his bat back into the lineup.

  94. Barb says:

Amen. He needs to suck it up.

  95. Brandie says:

Playoffs and the winning record demand it. Also, do we know that it is Matte holding himself out or are the coaches doing so as well?

  96. Eric Bowser says:

I thought I read today that Hurdle said he told Marte it is a matter of getting through the pain.

  97. Reading says:

Bats nonexistent again against some no-name journeyman. Need to win. Reds won. Cards will win. Nats were winning.

  98. Eric Bowser says:

I hate the approach at the plate.

  99. florida steeler says:

Neil Walker is giving this team nothing but so are some others. You look at that lineup and there are just too many holes.
Pedro gets a hit every once in a while but leads the league in strikeouts. Other than Cutch and Byrd, there are no go to guys to get hits. Most nights we make every pitcher look like the Cy Young winner.

  100. Brandie says:

I need to check that out.

  101. Brandie says:

Some might say it is the ebb and flow of the sport. In this case, too much ebb and not nearly enough flow.

  102. Eric Bowser says:

    he’s “hitting” .163 in September.

No wonder Harrison is starting against LHP.

  103. florida steeler says:

    worse than I thought.

  104. defil21 says:

Not to steal any thunder from Mr. Hasis but I don’t know who’s worse Walker or Leyva!

  105. Chuck H says:

Once again, a no-name pitcher that the Bucs can’t figure out. These games are very important and it seems that these Pirates don’t care if they win or not. That’s my view on
    it, anyway.

  106. twentytwo22 says:

Neil Walker hit two bomb homeruns and since then he is hitting high flyballs to the warning track. Every ball he hits hard is a high fly ball. He is a line drive average hitter and needs to get back to that to have the most value to the lineup.

  107. Barb says:

  108. Eric Bowser says:

Finally, Tabata rips one over 200 feet

  109. Patrick(ri) says:

    Doesn’t count– not tomleft field.

  110. Patrick(ri) says:

    To left field, that is

  111. pattonbb says:

Holy crap! The dumb guy just tied this game.

    Atta boy Tabata.

  112. Lad 9 says:

Brandie thinking good vibes – heavy, heavy good vibes – for our hippolacious friend.

  113. Steelag70 says:

The Buccos just seem to be like the other pro teams in the Burgh….they play to the level of competition…

  114. Eric Bowser says:

Tabata’s swing on HR much different than normal swing. He really needs to stay back more and not learn body into pitch like he normally does…. you can see the power with the bat if he can do it.

  115. defil21 says:

So true when you really think about it.

  116. Steelag70 says:

The Cards have struggled the last two nights vs Seattle and are losing again…2-0…the losing teams are the ones that usually bite you in the butt…

  117. Lad 9 says:

Good catch. He looks so strong EB; he should have more power. I know his first spring training the Pitates though he would be a 20 HR guy.

  118. Steelag70 says:

    Come on Gerrit…

  119. defil21 says:

Come on Hurdle use the Shark Tank.

  120. Brandie says:

    Boss! The Plan! The Plan!

:-) Happy to talk to you as always. I do miss Plan Francisco, though!

  121. Brandie says:

Sounds like he does not do enough of those little things that magnify into big things consistently.

  122. Steelag70 says:

    Nice KO Gerrit…one more out…

  123. Steelag70 says:

    Ace effort from Gerrit Cole!

  124. JRay3 says:

Yes sir Gerrit Cole, that was some big time pitching right there to get out of the inning, his last two starts have shown his growth right before our eyes.

And Martin shows why he catches full time, those blocks of the slider in the dirt putting his body in front of the ball showcased his defensive worth.

Now let’s get the kid another run.

  125. Steelag70 says:

JRay..well said….he really does seem to be getting stronger down the stretch….

  126. Lad 9 says:

+45. I just love this kid!

  127. JRay3 says:

Loved the emotion he showed, anybody out there think these players don’t care or want this are just way off base.

  128. Lad 9 says:

    He is a bulldog!

  129. JRay3 says:

Marlon Byrd goes yard, cannon ball coming, 2-1 Buccos, just awesome!

  130. Lad 9 says:

  131. Barb says:

  132. Steelag70 says:

    The Byrd is the wyrrrddddddddddddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  133. Parrothead01 says:

Please rest Morneau tomorrow. Our pitching staff has as many RBI s the last ten games as he does. At least drop him to seventh or eighth in the lineup.

  134. PIT-AKR says:

    Byrd is the word….

  135. Brandie says:

    I’m rubbing off on you!

  136. Lad 9 says:

Same here. He brings a lot here and is a great guy to boot.

  137. tdb1977 says:

What we are watching with Cole is a major coming out party for the young man. He is going to be damn good for us for years to come. If we have to play the wild card game – I want him to start it. I know he is just a rookie, but he is pitching lights out right now. Give him the ball ever 5 days and look what he has been doing. First against the Rangers and now against the Cubs.

  138. Steelag70 says:

I remember when they drafted Cole and lots of Bucco fans said they screwed up and should have taken Trever Bauer…hmmmmm…sure glad they didn’t. :D

  139. PIT-AKR says:

Byrd now .290 on the season

  140. Brandie says:

He brings the sauce to the barbecue for sure!

  141. Lad 9 says:

:) I would be proud to be mentioned in the same breath!

  142. Karen22 says:

At least pinch hit Gabby for him against lefties! What is this infatuation with Morneau now?!

  143. defil21 says:

I hope we can keep Byrd in a Bucco uniform next year.

  144. defil21 says:

LMAO. Nice. I got a fever and the only cure is Marlon Byrd!

  145. Brandie says:

    The whole blog is legendary.

  146. Steelag70 says:

    Elementary my dear Watson!!

  147. Lad 9 says:

A lot of media guys too. But I don’t think many scouting directors or GM’s shared that opinion. They thought he was a screwball – and they may be right.

  148. JRay3 says:

And there is another hold and zero on the board from Watson, his 17th consecutive game having not allowed a run. What a force he has turned into.

  149. defil21 says:

Everybody has there whipping boy. Mine is Walker.

  150. Steelag70 says:

    Me too….great acquisition…

  151. Lad 9 says:

    He is soooo good.

  152. Brandie says:

I’m sure buyin’ the mojo he’s sellin’.

  153. Lad 9 says:

  154. Steelag70 says:

He has closer potential written all over him….

  155. NYBuccoFan says:

I do too, but the bigger question is what t-shirt is he always wearing under his jersey? I want one, but don’ t know which one it is.

  156. Brandie says:

He is the biscuits to Melancon’s gravy.

  157. Brandie says:

It has to say BYRD MAN! :-)

  158. Steelag70 says:

    LOL….great one Brandie!

  159. defil21 says:

I work with a Mets fan and he always tells me how glad he is to see Byrd helping the Pirates out. This guy knows more about baseball then Vince Scully. Say’s for the short time Byrd was in NY he was a class act.

  160. PIT-AKR says:

Nobody mentioned earlier in the game when his quick throw to Walker got Rizzo at home – big play that is even bigger now

  161. Lad 9 says:

Brandie no high places now. Central Florida 34 PSU 31. Final.

  162. defil21 says:

The straw that stirs the drink.

  163. Lad 9 says:

I had a friend of mine who is a Cubs fan say the same about when he was there.

  164. defil21 says:

You could always send your question to Ask Teke.

  165. Brandie says:

I love it when a Plan comes together. The Buccos just like to lull their fans into a false sense of doom and insecurity only to turn on the drama in the latter innings. Well played, sirs! Well played indeed!

  166. Brandie says:

Too many little things not done that became big things…sound familiar Steelers?

  167. Brandie says:

Bout damn time we had one of those who isn’t certifiable as well. AKA Randall “Serrano” Simon!

  168. Lad 9 says:

    I hear ya.

  169. defil21 says:

Awesome. I always pull harder for the good/class act guys.

  170. Steelag70 says:

I thought it was Randall “Sausage on a Stick” Simon?? lol

  171. JRay3 says:

And on a Kendry Morales HR the M’s lead the Cards 3-0 in the 8th!

  172. defil21 says:

    Or Chico “no pants” Lind.

  173. Steelag70 says:

    Go M’s!!

  174. Steelag70 says:

    Come on Shark….bring it home…..

  175. PIT-AKR says:

  176. Lad 9 says:

You know it! Btw, welcome in from your lurk. I myself was a long time lurker.

  177. Brandie says:

Whoever thought the answer was Jimmy “Eat World” Anderson or Jeromy “Uncle Fester” Burnitz? Let’s give it up for Kevin Polcovich and The Ed Sprague Experience. From the Ridiculous to the Absurd.

So glad those days are gone.

  178. Brandie says:

Byrd could become one of my favorites!

  179. Steelag70 says:

    Ugghhh…should have been an out…

  180. PIT-AKR says:

    Damn Martin…

  181. PIT-AKR says:

    Two… Three…raise the Jolly Roger!!!

  182. Steelag70 says:

    RAISE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  183. Brandie says:

The Shark Tank…Opponents Are Our Chum(s).

Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

  184. Steelag70 says:

    Hahahaha ++++++

  185. Wild Bill says:

    Go Mariners!

  186. Steelag70 says:

    3-1 M’s now, bottom 8th…

  187. JRay3 says:

Behind an ace like performance from Gerrit Cole who earns his eighth win of the year, solo jacks from Jose Tabata and Marlon Byrd and close out innings from Watson and Melancon the Bucs take the third game of this four game set 2-1 and there was noooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Bucs improve to 86-62 and are winners of five of their last six games. The Pirates are 9-6 versus Chicago and 7-6 in September. The Pirates are a 1/2 game behind the Cards and could move back into a first place tie if the M’s hold on against the Cards. The Pirates are 7.5 games up on a playoff spot, could grow to 8 by jight’s end with just 14 games remaining.

The Pirates will look for the series win tomorrow when Francisco Liriano takes the mound for the Bucs.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  188. twentytwo22 says:

The opposing pitcher isn’t Cy Young pep talk for the offense the night before a game.

Travis Wood 3.55 era, .736 ops against in the second half.
Walker 4-11 .871 ops vs Wood

    Pleasant thoughts

RAISE IT , RAISE IT, RAISE IT. Caught the game on DVR and just got to the final out… what a tense game, little margin for victory…

GERRIT COLE is becoming an Ace, folks… he enjoys the big stage and what he did in the 7th was magical. Kudos to Clint for leaving Cole in to finish the inning (worked out, so we won’t hear a peep about it on the blog..if it didn’t work out, we would’ve heard about 10 scrolls worth of how bad a manager Clint is).

That said, not sure I like the ‘empty out the bench’ moves in the 8th and 9th the past few nights… kinda want Clint to go with the main guys at this point and not make so many moves… if the game gets tied up, we lose some key players …….

WATSON is as close to perfection as Melancon was in the 8th inning role…. oh, if Grilli can just get over the hump, we’d be totally set for the playoffs… Watson/Melancon/Grilli or Grilli/Watson/Melancon doesn’t really matter… then you can plug and play with the rest of the guys on matchups……

LETS GO BUCS… finish off a series win tomorrow, keep the Reds in the rear view and hope for Seattle help in St Louie!

  243. Baywatch says:

Thank you both. I’m getting a little antsy. Was hoping to start training this coming week but no word yet. Really looking forward to it. But in the meantime, still able to boogie about, delivering pizza for dough! THAT sounded funny, didn’t it!

  244. Baywatch says:

    +1 ALL THE WAY!

  245. John Lease says:

A win, sealed by a double play started by defensive wizard at shortstop…

    Jordy Mercer.

    Imagine that…

Oh, and Morneau does nothing again when it counts.
