  1. Eric Bowser says:

What a great September…. Pirates are working their way towards clinching their first playoff since 1992, football in the region is down with Steelers, Pitt, and Penn State each going through changes and now pre-season hockey for the Penguins.

Curious to see if Bylsma and his coaching staff made any adjustments with their puck retrieval (defensemen + forward support down low) and their breakouts out of the zone. Will we see more of the same… i.e. long breakouts.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make my way to training camp this year due to work and family obligations so tonight will be my first chance to check out the team.

  2. JohninOshkosh says:

Can’t stand the Mannings so I will be watching some of this.

What sort of things should I watch for in preseason hockey ?

  3. Eric Bowser says:

    According to Pens Twitter

    Lines
    Bennett – Malkin – Neal
    Glass – Jeffrey – Kobasew
    Kuhnhackl – Ebbett – Payerl
    LeBlond – Vitale – Farnham

    Defense
    Pouliot-Scuderi
    Dumoulin-Harrington
    Samuelsson-Niskanen

    Goaltenders
    Fleury – starter

  4. Eric Bowser says:

    1) Health, no injuries

    2) How does Bennett look at the lead forechecker at LW with Malkin and Neal

    3) Glass’ skating, did he lose a little weight to improve his skating & speed, team needs a more involved, more agile Glass after losing Cooke to Minnesota.

    4) Kuhnhackl – I really like this kid, one of the few forwards in the Pens system that has some pedigree, real nice wrist shot, and good size. Won’t really get a shot this year but injuries or trade could open up spot, otherwise, wait for next year.

    5) Scuderi – Want to see how comfortable ‘The Piece’ is back into this system.

    6) Pouliot – real nice looking young defenseman with a good shot and pass.

  5. Eric Bowser says:

    Penguins hockey is back!

  6. radio wave says:

How many minutes will regulars play compared to a regular season game? How many goalies?

  7. Lad 9 says:

    Lets go Pens!

  8. JohninOshkosh says:

    Much appreciated, Eric!

I had forgotten about the “Metropolitan Division” as well. lol

  9. Brandie says:

Thank you for the low down Eric. Reading your posts has helped me become more knowledgeable.

  10. Eric Bowser says:

Neal scores, solid hit on Bennett, stayed calm and moved puck to Neal… too much time for Neal.

As DK notes on Twitter – Neal shoots low!

  11. Eric Bowser says:

I hate it and refuse to acknowledge it. LOL

  12. Brandie says:

Now back to the continuing story of the legend of Rob Scuderi (to paraphrase another poster from yesterday). Let’s hope Scudsi (gotta yinzer that up ya know) is the answer.

  13. Eric Bowser says:

welcome and glad to read that it helps people learn the game.

  14. Pucknutz says:

Wow – very strange – watching a Hockey game (allbeit just preseason) while there is still meaningful baseball being played in Pgh. !

  15. Eric Bowser says:

Most likely roll 4 lines… usually teams split the minutes for goalies, so Fleury would play the first 30 minutes (1st period and 1st ten minutes of 2nd).

  16. Eric Bowser says:

Oh look, Niskanen can’t handle the front of net and puck deflects by Fleury.

    PP goal by Artem Anisimov

    1-1

  17. MadTurk says:

Just don’t listen to him about coaches or you will be firing Bylsma and all the coaches before the season begins. No matter he gets them to the promise land unlike some other coached of our sports team.

  18. Eric Bowser says:

Those of you watching, pre-season games will have the hybrid icing. I wonder if Joni Pitkanen wishes that was a rule last year. He’s gone for whole season from an injury last season as result of hit during race to puck for icing.

  19. Brandie says:

The world has changed my friend.

  20. JohninOshkosh says:

Yeah, I can’t imagine the PA not voting for it but announcer said is was about 50/50.

  21. Brandie says:

The blog would not be the blog without somebody getting fired!

  22. Eric Bowser says:

Bylsma’s history doesn’t lead me to think he’ll adjust come April, May & June.

  23. Eric Bowser says:

Love the work down low by Kuhnhackl.

Kobasew scores but great work by the whole unit.

  24. Brandie says:

He needs to learn from Hurdle. Adjust or the game will pass you by!

  25. Eric Bowser says:

    Defensemen and goalies for

    Forwards against….

guessing that’s how it could work out for NHLPA

  26. Pucknutz says:

Hoping a move East for the Blue Jackets (sorta dumb name, wonder where that came from) will help that franchise.
Columbus would seem to be in a good spot , should be able to draw from all over the state. Maybe a bit of the baseball/football rivalries (brown/stillers etc) will spill over a bit ??
Metropolitan Division ( name sucks, gotta change that) may be a good spot for them.
    What da ya think?

  27. Brandie says:

That seems to be a new wrinkle thus far…the whole unit creating opportunities rather than relying on a select few.

  28. Pucknutz says:

Ya – maybe we will have to chose between a “real” hockey game and a “real” baseball game! Just a dream. LOL

  29. Brandie says:

    Reality often start with dreams!!

  30. Brandie says:

Another reason to grit on Ohio.

  31. And an 8.3 share (down to 7.9 I believe)

  32. JohninOshkosh says:

Named for soldiers in United States Civil War. Ohio proudly fought for the Union.

  33. Brandie says:

    Good one Revvie!

  34. Brandie says:

    Historical significance. I like it!

  35. Brandie says:

Just treading on the line. Trust me, I never want to do anything to obliterate it.

  36. Eric Bowser says:

Good period as team could work even-strength, PP 5-4, PK 4-5, and PK 3-5.

  37. Brandie says:

The Metropolitan Division? Who writes this stuff?

  38. Brandie says:

Despres better be careful. He’s going to “lazy” himself right out of a job. When will people learn? Talent is not enough.

  39. Pucknutz says:

Ya John – sorta figured that’s where it came from. Still don’t ring for me, not a big civil war buff. Hey maybe it will grow on me LOL

Lotta sports teams have somewhat curious names. I really somewhat like some of the minor league names. Some are really bad but I love “Mud Hens” for instance, silly as hell but cool!! Ya I ain’t right!!!

  40. theplanisworking says:

    FIRE BYLSMA !!!!

    (That was for you). ;)

  41. Pucknutz says:

“Grit On” never heard that one before. Obviously not a good thing to “grit on” someone, something or somestate! LOL

  42. Eric Bowser says:

Oh Brandie…. this “thing” about Despres is a load of hogwash….

He didn’t show up one year in great shape, then during skating drill he tried to get through it while he was SICK and everyone there started to rip him for being out of shape and to my knowledge, no one that day bothered to ask Despres about it.

Days later, Bylsma says media about him being sick.

All Despres has done is have a solid few days in camp.

    Nothing to see here…..lol

  43. Brandie says:

Guess the drama Donna’s are out in full force..,in the preseason.

  44. theplanisworking says:

Here, I thought it was the bird………..

  45. Eric Bowser says:

Wasn’t Fleury supposed to work on his puck handling and moving behind the net this summer?

  46. theplanisworking says:

They will regret not trading him this summer!

  47. Pucknutz says:

Goalie pad – 2″ smaller – on top? Ok I was not paying full attention when they splained it.
Net was to be changed a bit also – in the back.
Looks a bit tighter – can’t really see it well enough.

  48. Pucknutz says:

No Fleury bashing till the playoffs!!! LOL

  49. theplanisworking says:

    :D

  50. JohninOshkosh says:

You not being right makes the blog a much better place. :)

  51. defil21 says:

Might as well play Flower in the regular season, and keep TV ready for the post season. I always liked the Flower hopefully he will blossom this spring like he did in 08 and 09 Cup runs.

  52. Brandie says:

One could only hope. Hard to see one so talented become so mentally unglued.

  53. defil21 says:

Hopefully the sports psychologist helps him work through some stuff, and hey “The Piece” is back as well. Flower Power!!

  54. Pucknutz says:

With all due respect most of the “regulars” on this blog definitely “ain’t right” !!!

  55. defil21 says:

I miss Cookie and Morrow, the rest not so much.

  56. Brandie says:

I am proud to be off kilter.

  57. Pucknutz says:

Should keep that kilt on Brandie – no need to say more.
Wow – is this a boring Sun night or what. Nothing better to do than post silly stuff.

  58. Barb says:

Well I see P Manning had to show up E Manning. BOOOOO!

  59. Dave G says:

Plan…saw your post about Austintown on the baseball side.

I lived there (right behind Wal-Mart on Mahoning Ave.) for 14 years while I was still working at the Lordstown GM plant, until I retired and moved to Florida for 4 years.

  60. Brandie says:

Thanks a lot. Turning me into the blog exhibitionist! You are right, though. We do post a lot of silly stuff. Oh well. Time to start discussing the merits of Kierkegaard vs. Nietzche to raise the intellectual quotient.

    Na!

  61. Brandie says:

Writer by Dustin “I am the Answer” Jeffrey.

  62. Eric Bowser says:

Kuhnhackl in front, Jeffrey fires one into net… 3-2 Pens

Gotta love the action in front of net by the new TK!

  63. Eric Bowser says:

    The Test Tube (Letestu) scores

  64. Pucknutz says:

Hit Jandys Yawn button if ya feel the need , but continuing the “silly” theme–
What the heck do ya cheer for the “Mud Hens” ???
    Lets go Mud ?
    Go Chickens Go ?
Egg em, Egg em, Egg em ?
    Mire them Mud???

Ok I am done puttin chicken scratch all over the blog. I am gonna go read a book. Not Kierkegaard vs. Nietzche but close. LOL

  65. radio wave says:

Cannot believe Jandy is not here.

  66. Brandie says:

Who says the blog isn’t educational?

  67. Brandie says:

Missing that scrappy salty tongued nun.

  68. Brandie says:

Kobasew seems like one to keep an eye on.

  69. theplanisworking says:

She is probably spying on us to use the size 9′s :)

  70. Brandie says:

Kuhnhackl turning out to be an impact player tonight. Small sample size, but I like what I see.

  71. Brandie says:

    Beware the Hovering Nun!

  72. JohninOshkosh says:

++++ Made me laugh, Mr. Nutz.

    I’m partial to Heidegger myself.

  73. Brandie says:

Mr. Nutz sounds like a demented kiddie show host.

  74. Brandie says:

Immanuel Kant was a real pi$$ant!

  75. JohninOshkosh says:

Either that or the name of an “actor” whose picture Ghost might post.

  76. Brandie says:

Ghost has a real knack for finding that special brand of method acting thespians.

  77. JohninOshkosh says:

I was waiting for it. Well played.

  78. Eric Bowser says:

Malkin really in mid-season form, bad turnover late on shift, Niskanen was pinching, didn’t cover Murray coming back, boom, OT goal. LOL

  79. theplanisworking says:

    You forgot the Capital letters………….

  80. defil21 says:

    FIRE BYLSMA!

  81. theplanisworking says:

    ++++++++++++
