  1. What a great September…. Pirates are working their way towards clinching their first playoff since 1992, football in the region is down with Steelers, Pitt, and Penn State each going through changes and now pre-season hockey for the Penguins.

Curious to see if Bylsma and his coaching staff made any adjustments with their puck retrieval (defensemen + forward support down low) and their breakouts out of the zone. Will we see more of the same… i.e. long breakouts.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make my way to training camp this year due to work and family obligations so tonight will be my first chance to check out the team.

  2. Can’t stand the Mannings so I will be watching some of this.

What sort of things should I watch for in preseason hockey ?

    • 1) Health, no injuries

      2) How does Bennett look at the lead forechecker at LW with Malkin and Neal

      3) Glass’ skating, did he lose a little weight to improve his skating & speed, team needs a more involved, more agile Glass after losing Cooke to Minnesota.

      4) Kuhnhackl – I really like this kid, one of the few forwards in the Pens system that has some pedigree, real nice wrist shot, and good size. Won’t really get a shot this year but injuries or trade could open up spot, otherwise, wait for next year.

      5) Scuderi – Want to see how comfortable ‘The Piece’ is back into this system.

      6) Pouliot – real nice looking young defenseman with a good shot and pass.

  3. According to Pens Twitter

    Lines
    Bennett – Malkin – Neal
    Glass – Jeffrey – Kobasew
    Kuhnhackl – Ebbett – Payerl
    LeBlond – Vitale – Farnham

    Defense
    Pouliot-Scuderi
    Dumoulin-Harrington
    Samuelsson-Niskanen

    Goaltenders
    Fleury – starter

  4. How many minutes will regulars play compared to a regular season game? How many goalies?

    • Now back to the continuing story of the legend of Rob Scuderi (to paraphrase another poster from yesterday). Let’s hope Scudsi (gotta yinzer that up ya know) is the answer.

  5. Neal scores, solid hit on Bennett, stayed calm and moved puck to Neal… too much time for Neal.

As DK notes on Twitter – Neal shoots low!

  6. Wow – very strange – watching a Hockey game (allbeit just preseason) while there is still meaningful baseball being played in Pgh. !

  7. Oh look, Niskanen can’t handle the front of net and puck deflects by Fleury.

    PP goal by Artem Anisimov

    1-1

  8. Those of you watching, pre-season games will have the hybrid icing. I wonder if Joni Pitkanen wishes that was a rule last year. He’s gone for whole season from an injury last season as result of hit during race to puck for icing.

  9. Love the work down low by Kuhnhackl.

Kobasew scores but great work by the whole unit.

  10. Hoping a move East for the Blue Jackets (sorta dumb name, wonder where that came from) will help that franchise.
Columbus would seem to be in a good spot , should be able to draw from all over the state. Maybe a bit of the baseball/football rivalries (brown/stillers etc) will spill over a bit ??
Metropolitan Division ( name sucks, gotta change that) may be a good spot for them.
    What da ya think?

  11. Good period as team could work even-strength, PP 5-4, PK 4-5, and PK 3-5.

  12. Wasn’t Fleury supposed to work on his puck handling and moving behind the net this summer?

  13. Goalie pad – 2″ smaller – on top? Ok I was not paying full attention when they splained it.
Net was to be changed a bit also – in the back.
Looks a bit tighter – can’t really see it well enough.

  14. I miss Cookie and Morrow, the rest not so much.

  15. Well I see P Manning had to show up E Manning. BOOOOO!

  16. Plan…saw your post about Austintown on the baseball side.

I lived there (right behind Wal-Mart on Mahoning Ave.) for 14 years while I was still working at the Lordstown GM plant, until I retired and moved to Florida for 4 years.

  17. Writer by Dustin “I am the Answer” Jeffrey.

  18. Kuhnhackl in front, Jeffrey fires one into net… 3-2 Pens

Gotta love the action in front of net by the new TK!

  19. The Test Tube (Letestu) scores

  20. Cannot believe Jandy is not here.

  21. Kobasew seems like one to keep an eye on.

  22. Malkin really in mid-season form, bad turnover late on shift, Niskanen was pinching, didn’t cover Murray coming back, boom, OT goal. LOL
