  1. The Groat Bowl. Who will he root for?

His alma mater or his hometown college team?

  2. theplanisworking says:

    Depends on the ratings.

  3. This is a very, very, very hard game for me!

DUKE needs this win! Pitt needs this win!

DUKE lost its starting QB to a broken collarbone. Pitt is on the road.

I love DUKE!! Pitt is my hometown college team!

Dick Groat graduated from Duke. Maz graduated from the University of Gold Glove.
Dick Stuart (Dr. Strangeglove) didn’t graduate nothin’.

    If it’s basketball, I don’t even pause. D-U-K-E!!

    Today . . . . I have decided to root for . . . . The Winner!

  4. A man after my own heart. Root for the winner.

    An 8.5 share guaranteed.

  5. JRay3 says:

Great opening drive by the Panthers, encouraging sign to see them control the line of scrimmage and march down the field on a 12 play 85 yard scoring drive.

Like Chryst going for it and rewarded with seven. Go Pitt!

  6. florida steeler says:

Where did Pitt find that kicker??

  7. J Walter Weatherman says:

We may be seeing something special developing with Connor. Great blend of elusiveness, balance, and especially power. Doesn’t have breakaway speed like Graham, but makes losing Shell a moot point. Quite frankly, I think he’s better than Shell.

Special teams are a debacle. Can’t tell who’s fault it is, but snaps have definitely been high.

  8. JRay3 says:

Well what Pitt is lacking in the kicking game, they are making up for on defense, two picks by the Panther secondary on first two Duke drives. Need to cash in some points here.

  9. florida steeler says:

Secondary much improved from poor performance against FSU.

  10. J Walter Weatherman says:

Yeah, Boyd is pretty good too.

  11. florida steeler says:

Tyler Boyd is THE REAL DEAL!!!!!

  12. JRay3 says:

Tyler Boyd is SPECIAL, what moves he shows in breaking tackles, ankles and shows speed and elusiveness on that 27 yard TD.

Local kids take notice, talent plays with PC, Boyd a star in the making.

  13. theplanisworking says:

  14. JRay3 says:

Yeah have to agree the snaps have been horrible, Blewitt is supposedly a pretty good kicker.

Really like what I see from James Conner, the look of a football player, running game does not look to be that big of a concern after all. Line is playing well and seems to be an area of strength for a PC team should help when trying to land top RB recruits.

  15. florida steeler says:

I agree–the other good kid that went to Alabama will wait, at least, one year and maybe two when he could have played immediately at Pitt. I have forgotten his name but still believe he made a big mistake.

  16. JRay3 says:

Robert Foster, their was talk earlier this week he tweeted -“guess my mother was right” eluding to possibly regretting his decision to go to Alabama. Tweet was removed quickly.

He certainly has to hear about how local kid is playing, contributing and getting a lot of pub. Should help Pitt in the future.

  17. florida steeler says:

    Good job on the name

  18. bradthedad says:

Too funny. Donald just tackled both the quarterback and the running back with a single wrap-up.

  19. J Walter Weatherman says:

Donald with an incredible play, then they give up long 3rd down TD. This defense is obviously mediocre overall. One great player (Donald), a couple of good players (Hendricks, Williams), and a bunch of mediocre to average players – jury still out on Thomas and Pitts. Good teams will pick on the weak links. Offense will have to score a lot of points to win games against better teams.

  20. florida steeler says:

If a Pa. kid goes to Florida, FSU, Alabama–believe me, they will not get favorable breaks over the local recruits.

  21. J Walter Weatherman says:

A throw that Sunseri could never make. Nice play.

  22. JRay3 says:

Savage to Street for 67 yards…TD Pitt. 20 points in the 1st quarter following a 49 point game, have to like what the offense is showing.

  23. JRay3 says:

    No doubt.

  24. J Walter Weatherman says:

At least the officials are consistent – all you can ask for. Letting them play.

  25. florida steeler says:

    Price will be decent.

  26. JRay3 says:

Good point, if they didn’t call the play on Boyd in end zone no way you can call that one.

  27. florida steeler says:

Better than those pathetic major league umpires!!!!

  28. J Walter Weatherman says:

Very possible. Just going on current performances.

  29. JRay3 says:

Have to remember this is a very young team, I am looking for continued improvement over course of season and already think they have made a few strides from the opener.

  30. florida steeler says:

Tyler Boyd may be better than any Steeler receiver. (lol)

  31. JRay3 says:

This is just silly, Pitt making it look like playstation football. Savage to Boyd for 69 yards and Boyd with 114 yards receiving in a 16 minutes of play.

    27-7 Panthers!

  32. J Walter Weatherman says:

When is the last time we could say that Pitt is a fun team to watch? Very explosive offense.

  33. florida steeler says:

Pitt hired the right coach this time.

  34. JRay3 says:

Maybe some of the Walt Harris days? Been a long time. Really like what PC is showing with the offense. You called it….explosive offense.

  35. J Walter Weatherman says:

You can legitimately say he’s a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. Dare I say he may be a legit Heisman candidate in the next couple of years?

  36. J Walter Weatherman says:

Now that Duke is on their heels, I say run the ball down their throats on the next possession. Would complete destroy any remaining will they had in this game.

  37. J Walter Weatherman says:

Wow, the Pitt secondary is really suspect. Not good.

  38. florida steeler says:

#9 has bitten badly on both touchdowns.

  39. JRay3 says:

Both Duke TD’s have come on 3rd and long situations, defense definitely needs to tighten that up.

  40. florida steeler says:

Thought they improved from the FSU game–I may have to retract that one. #9 struggling.

  41. JRay3 says:

After htat 40 yard run, James Conner now has 13 carries for 125 yards, impressive running, more impressive line domination.

  42. theplanisworking says:

Conner is a very good back.
To think he wouldnt have this much of an opportunity if headcase Shell was still here.

  43. J Walter Weatherman says:

I’ll stick with my earlier statement and say there was no reason to throw one pass on that drive. Duke wasn’t stopping the run. First questionable play-calling of the game, but not too egregious.

  44. florida steeler says:

Very good point–defense is not very good and giving Duke the ball far too often.

  45. J Walter Weatherman says:

The defense is as bad as the offense is good. Lots of high scoring games. At least they’ll be entertaining!

  46. florida steeler says:

Special teams and defense is a joke.

  47. J Walter Weatherman says:

Won’t win too many games against decent teams when two of the three units are very bad.

  48. JRay3 says:

First team to 60 wins? That Crowder kid is pretty electric himself.

  49. J Walter Weatherman says:

It’s very evident that PC has a very good offensive mind. His weakness is finding decent assistant coaches for defense and ST.

  50. J Walter Weatherman says:

    Keep. Running. Connor.

  51. Eric Bowser says:

Interesting to watch high school football on a Saturday….

  52. J Walter Weatherman says:

Hey, the WR screen doesn’t work when Pitt runs is either. It’s almost like that’s an ineffective play or something…

  53. theplanisworking says:

    Tyler Boyd is good.
    That is all.

  54. JRay3 says:

Tyler Boyd, why not? 3rd TD of game and one Panthers needed. 37-28 and not even halftime yet.

Huge drive and score, hope PC can get some adjustments made on defense in the locker room.

  55. J Walter Weatherman says:

Boyd wisely seems to be more and more part of the game plan each week. By the end of the season, opposing teams will be game planning for him.

+28 on the comment regarding defensive (and special teams) adjustments. Unfortunately, talent is also a big problem, so adjustments will only do so much.

  56. JRay3 says:

They were better last year defensively and considered a decent unit….does the team miss Huxtable that much?

  57. J Walter Weatherman says:

It appears they do miss him, but still too difficult to say how much is coaching and how much is talent. Like the Steelers offense, it’s probably a bad mix of both.

  58. J Walter Weatherman says:

I don’t know what the Pitt single season record is for all-purpose yards, but Boyd might break it during his career … and maybe even this year. It’s very possible he’ll average 250+ all-purpose yards per game this season.

  59. Arriba Wilver says:

You mean like last week’s Alabama v Texas A&M?

  60. JRay3 says:

Good start for the defense to get a three and out to start second half. Offense had 468 yards of offense in opening half, going to need a bit more of that.

  61. Careful. You’re poking the SEC part of Drew.

  62. JRay3 says:

Heck of a over the shoulder catch by Street on a perfect throw from Savage. 44-28 Panthers.

Savage now with 355 yards passing and 5 TD’s.

  63. theplanisworking says:

Horrible fake punt for a loss. :)

  64. JRay3 says:

Huge special teams play for Pitt sniffing out the fake, great field position and chance to start putting game away.

  65. J Walter Weatherman says:

That was a pretty obvious fake punt situation. Glad Pitt was prepared – good play.

  66. theplanisworking says:

Duke looked lost on that fake.

  67. theplanisworking says:

Nice TD on a simple in route.

    51-28 good guys.

  68. JRay3 says:

Savage with his 6th TD to Orndoff another true freshman and Pitt makes it 51-28. Defense has gotten three stops to start second half, encouraging.

  69. florida steeler says:

Bisnowaty is an absolute BEAST. Handled his guy all day and on one occasion, blocked two people.

  70. theplanisworking says:

    As you were saying? ;)

    NCAA2KSports video game today.

    51-35 good guys.

  71. florida steeler says:

    Secondary is awful.

  72. JRay3 says:

Imagine him and Dorian Johnson, Mike Grimm, going to have some maulers.

  73. florida steeler says:

    You aren’t kidding+ Orndorf.

  74. JRay3 says:

Pitt with over 600 yards of offense in 3rd quarter.

  75. florida steeler says:

Would have worked against the Steelers.

  76. J Walter Weatherman says:

Wow. I didn’t think L. Pitts was that bad coming into the season. He looks horrible.

  77. J Walter Weatherman says:

    First team to 70?

  78. JRay3 says:

It would help if he ever looked back for the ball, poor technique.

Big stop on 2 pt conversion, still two possession game. Need more points.

  79. J Walter Weatherman says:

He’s been studying William Gay too much.

  80. florida steeler says:

#9–AGAIN–he can’t cover anyone. This defense is disgusting against a marginal opponent with second team QB picking them apart.

  81. Lad 9 says:

Have to agree. He looks lost out there. Doesn’t seem to understand when to turn and make the play. He got a break early on an interference call too.

  82. JRay3 says:

Huge INT by Gordon, Panther third of the day to swing momentum back.

  83. JRay3 says:

4th pick of the day and Gonzalez takes it to the house….defense makes another play….58-41 PITT!

  84. Lad 9 says:

Gonzo! So glad to see that young man come up with a big play. He more than anyone in the program was jerked around by all the coaching changes – linebacker is his fourth different position.

  85. Doesn’t look like either defense is making too many play, JRay.

That seems to be the pattern in college football this season.

  86. Arriba Wilver says:

He’ll never see it. He’s in NewYork on his second honeymoon. ;-)

  87. florida steeler says:

Who is the defensive coordinator?? Anyone know?? Better be looking for a new one. Assignment, after assignment blown.

  88. J Walter Weatherman says:

The O-line is getting worn down in the 4th quarter. Offense has looked sluggish.

  89. Lad 9 says:

Matt House. He was a controversial in-house promotion and looks like he may not be up to the task.

  90. J Walter Weatherman says:

Folks. Pitt has just given up (at least) 55 points. To Duke. That’s Duke football. This might be the worst defense in Pitt football history, including the dark days in late 80’s and early 90’s.

DK: Don’t know, Walt. I was being told on Twitter it was all one player’s fault. :)

  91. J Walter Weatherman says:

Great catch to seal the game.

  92. JRay3 says:

Catch of the day by Weatherspoon when a play was absolutley necessary. One of the strangest and more exciting games I have ever watched.

  93. JRay3 says:

First ever road ACC win, take a W anyway you get it. Lots of coaching needs to be done on defensive side this week in preparation for Virginia.

  94. Arriba Wilver says:

  95. florida steeler says:

Poorest coached defense I have seen in a long time. Against Duke. Paul better get rid of his defensive coordinator.

  96. Lad 9 says:

Whew. Made it difficult. Lets tighten up that D coaches. I will take the win. Hail to Pitt!

  97. JoeyBats says:

Matt House is just an AWFUL D. Coordinator…shame on him…..shame on PC for putting him in a position he isn’t going to be successful in.
Worse yet…..they don’t seem to be recruiting any better talent into the “D” pipeline….so far. :-(
Some “must gets” in this years’ h.s. class are Dravon Henry (Aliquippa), Montae Nicholson (Gateway) and Marquese Dudley-Gordon (Florida.) <<…these guys can all run…and all hit. Speeeeeeed…a must for the DB's in the ACC.

  98. JoeyBats says:

PS: Forgot to add….that Marquese Dudley-Gordon is Shane Gordon’s (current PITT LB) brother. :-)
