  2. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Standings will be updated this evening

Makes my job a helluva lot easier when I don’t have to hunt to find everyone’s “wagers”

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

    Today’s Pick ‘Em Line
Total Combined RBI’s by Justin Morneau and Garrett Jones in today’s game
    0-1 (EVEN ODDS)
    2-3 (DOUBLE ODDS)

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  4. Jandy says:

Playoffs, you are EVIL, sir! :P

  5. Brandie says:

    Testify, Temptress!

  6. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I was talking to a friend of mine in Pittsburgh last night, and he told me that Pres. Coonelly was on The Fan yesterday.
He cited the “Hoka Hey” exercises as one of the reasons that the Pirates are going to the playoffs.
    Did anybody hear this?
I certainly didn’t rate it in my top 100 reasons…..

  7. Brandie says:

    Why Playoffs? Why?

  8. theplanisworking says:

    No Byrd Man?
    Did he fly the coop?

  9. Jandy says:

Prolly a rest day for him…he seems a bit fatigued.

  10. theplanisworking says:

    You’re kidding me, right?
Frank came out of hiding to credit Hoka Hey?

So that means the players and coaches had nothing to do with the success?
    Its all about Hoka Hey?

Only Frank could ruin the goodwill in this city .
Isnt he due to be commissioner soon?

  11. theplanisworking says:

Isnt he due to be commissioner soon?

  12. theplanisworking says:

Oh, so you took his feathers?

  13. Damon says:

I thought the Hoka Hey stuff was for the prospects and not the players actually going to the playoffs.

DK: It’s for Class A prospects and lower. Last fall marked the first of the more unorthodox brand. Not one player who has spent a day on the 25-man roster in 2013 had even the most remote connection to the practice.

Does that qualify as stretching the truth or outright lying?

    I’ve lost count.

  14. Jandy says:

Not I, I don’t do feathers, silly Hippo.
    I do size 9 wides ;)

  15. Bizrow says:

Well as per usual, will take 100 on 4 or more

Just got a feeling (not that that has ever worked before ;-)

    Thanks Playoffs

  16. Jandy says:

    I do believe you’re onto something Damon…

  17. Bizrow says:

Yes I heard that, he did say it, gave the team the “confidence to win”

Funny thing though, I thought they did that at the minor league level and not with the major league ballplayers

I give Huntington a huge amount of credit, and actually, the guy is coming off much better with his comments.

Slick Frank on the other hand…

    Why even mention this SF??

  18. Damon says:

Anyone know if the wind is blowing out today?

Anyway, I feel like Marte, Walker and Cutch will be on base enough to have Morneau and Jones get at least 2 RBIs today (HR?).

Therefore I am going to take 100 on the 2-3 double odds.

  20. Jandy says:

    Zactly, Biz…

  21. Jandy says:

So, Dejan, when do you think NH might chastise FC? I mean, the guy is making him look like a horse’s azz.

  22. Damon says:

  23. Jandy says:

    WOw, good job, War Horse!

  24. Brandie says:

    I will take 100 on 2-3! Thanks!

  25. Jandy says:

Or wait, that should come from Mr. Nutting….sorry, got cofused there for a second.

  26. Brandie says:

Do you think there is as super spectacular bold reaming in Mr. Coonelly’s future?

  27. NMR says:

But he’s a great with the business side!

Get this man out of here.

  28. Damon says:

Go Tony! (I almost typed Freddie….)

  29. Brandie says:

    Thanks War Horse!

  30. Patrick(ri) says:

I have amost defended FC on the grounds the team was making money and I had no access to his job description to fully enable criticism. This radio commentary, if he made it, is, as Lindsey Graham might say, a bridge too far. How sad, he looks like an intelligent person.

  31. Brandie says:

In a answer to DK’S question…It’s outright stretching the lie!

  32. Patrick(ri) says:

  33. Nate83 says:

    100 on 2-3. Thanks.

  34. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    No…Not joking.

  35. Bill Born says:

    !00 units Please, on the 2 – 3 Line.

    Many thanks

  36. cmat0829 says:

let’s roll the dice on 4 or more…sucker’s bet, but I’m a sucker.

    100 please.

  37. Jim S. says:

I don’t know, but as a general rule once you hit Sept the breeze blows in far moreso than it blows out at Wrigley. Sunny and low 60’s in Chicago right now. Probably won’t quite touch 70. That usually means it is blowing in. Not a definite thing, but usually.

  38. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    hundo on 2-3

  39. Jim S. says:

Intelligent and completely tone deaf often go hand in hand. :-)

  40. Qualifies as Hoka Hooey, as per usual with Frank.

  41. Nate83 says:

Unfortunately 4 of the 8 batting above .280 are outfielders. Unfortunately we can’t play all 4 of them.

Martin, Walker and Alverez are definatley hurting the team right now. The drop off after Morneau is drastic. You are going to have some guys struggling but you would like them to be in the .220-.240 range. It’s encouraging to see that many guys hitting well and Morneau has a high OBP. Just getting slightly below average production from the other 3 would make a huge difference for the offense.

  42. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Very disappointing if he actually did say that.

No reason to make that statement at all…..

    time to go……

  43. Jandy says:

    Haha! Priceless!

  44. Jim S. says:

    Thanks for that, War!

  45. I like today’s lists better, WH.

  46. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    Better than Dirty

  47. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

  48. Jandy says:

ha! Hubby always calls Gaby “Dirty Sanchez”
    cracks me up!

  49. Jim S. says:

Walker has 4 HR in the last 6 games. He had a 4/5 game over the weekend. He was slumping until about this time last week, though.

I thought Alvarez looked pretty good last night.

  50. toochca says:

Although today’s list is one we would ALL like to be on!! :D

    Nice job War Horse!

  51. Jim S. says:

& you had GI Jones being hot this morning. This is not the Nate I know. I fear an evil co-worker has locked Nate out of his office and pirated (pun intended) his keyboard.

  52. Playoffs by 2012 says:

When Alex Presley makes the Hall of Fame he will credit HOKA HEY.

  53. Jandy says:

so, when does hell freeze over?

  54. toochca says:

When I lived in Erie, it used to happen in the middle of December to be totally frozen over!!

  55. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

So. Interesting conversation going on in this mornings’ blog….

Sorry I couldn’t chime in, but was slightly disappointed that not many people mentioned their lineup.

Enjoyed reading some…….and ignored others. (Its what I do best)

The WC: Love the idea of Liriano going 6-7 and Cole coming in to close it down. I agree, there isn’t a better pitcher on the roster right now that Cole. Plus, he can mix his pitches less, meaning, heavy dose of that 100MPH heater and throw in a slider here and there. Shut down mode…..

I drop Travis Snider for sure, I think I mentioned that yesterday. Jeff Locke fo shizzle.

I also agree that Jeff’s Locke issues isn’t in his head. Arm slot. When a pitcher loses his command, its USUALLY because of arm slot. Charlie Morton changed his arm slot to 3/4 and is the pitcher today because of it. (I won’t start the head case talk again)

I drop John Buck as well, but perhaps revisit his addition in the WS. Though I think Gaby/Jones make a pretty decent DH combo. Buck adds experience in the AL and could be the DH against LHP. Depends on who they face and their depth of LHP.

That’s my take. I dont care about the order as much. I think Barmes should get majority of starts at SS. His defense is more important than Jordy’s offense. Except against LHP.

  56. Arriba Wilver says:

What a small-minded guy. No class, no clue.

  57. NMR says:

It has become painfully obvious which one of the three headed monster sticks out as at least approaching competency.

Nutting needs to cut the dead weight dragging Huntington back into the muck.

  58. Jandy says:

    mind? he has a mind?

  59. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Are you sure he’s not a head case??

    LOL, sorry, couldn’t resist.

  60. toochca says:

I for one am just happy to 1) Be in a position to have to make these decisions 2) Have difficult decisions to make and 3) Am not the one making those decisions!!

  61. NMR says:

Haha, yeah, I had the same thoughts…

The shear realization of playoff baseball has warped his brain!!! :)

  62. NMR says:

    Ugh. Don’t remind me.

  63. BDHumbert says:

    Oh well,

100 on the 4 – may Morneau gets his first HR and it’s a GS….

  64. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

I wonder if he just brought that subject up or was he asked about it?

Was he actually referring to the Pirates themselves or the baby Pirates success in the minors?

This statement makes no sense to me at all.

    Maybe that’s just FC

  65. Arriba Wilver says:

    Beat me to it, Jim.

Walker OPS in last 7 days—1.480

    Last 14 days—.876

  66. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

ANYBODY with the last name Sanchez must be referred to as Dirty.

    Its law. I’ve seen it.

  67. toochca says:

You from Erie? Or don’t remind you that winter is coming?

  68. Jim S. says:

I think he still secretly likes the Philies more than the Pirates anyway. Let’s start that rumor.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

    Hi Frank !

  70. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Oh I would love to be in the position to make these decisions.

They are good problems to have, no doubt.

  71. NMR says:

Isn’t it crazy how much better Jordy hits lefties?

I was hoping last night would be easy pickings for Starling. So much for that.

  72. Nate83 says:

I owned up to the Jones mistake.

Yes Walker has been hitting it better and Alverez is showing signs and over the last 6 games this offense has scored 32 runs. Which is proof that this offense is good enough to get the 4 runs per game this pitching staff needs to win.

  73. Jandy says:

  74. Jandy says:

Jordy amazes me with that proclivity. Gotta keep him in there against lefties.

  75. 21sthebest says:

“So that means the players and coaches had nothing to do with the success?
    Its all about Hoka Hey.”

No. He didn’t imply that at all. He only made reference to “elite training.” The interview is on The Fan’s website for anyone to hear and judge for themselves. When talking about player development in the minors and developing in Latin America, he said this:

“Elite training in player development system is helping to sustain success.”

  76. Jim S. says:

I laughed through every word, NMR.

  77. Dom says:

    100 on 0-1

  78. NMR says:

Spent just two years in Harborcreek along the way.

Honestly not a terrible place at all. Kind, humble people. But those winters drain your soul.

  79. Milo Hamilton says:

Looks like he lost the letter I wrote him. SMH.

  80. Karen22 says:

    100 on 2-3.

    That’s a nasty one, Playoffs! ;)

  81. Jandy says:

Snow drains my soul. I HATE snow…

  82. Jim S. says:

He seems slow to recognize pitches right now, doesn’t he? Just seems late on most pitches. Fortunately, he crushed the one on Monday that won the game. He did rip one foul last night if we are looking for something positive.

  83. Jandy says:

  84. 21sthebest says:

Doesn’t look broken down to me.

  85. Karen22 says:

Oh my GOD!! That’s INSANE (AND outright lying)!

  86. Jandy says:

Really 21? He didn’t imply otherwise?
Then you’re saying we’re all getting riled up for nothing?

  87. NMR says:

The fact that he’s showing up in public at all right now after turning into a ghost last Fall tells you all you need to know.

  88. Dadtackular says:

    100 on 0-1

  89. Jandy says:

Jim, did you hear it? The actual Fan show?

  90. Jim S. says:

I was just kidding you, Nate. I’m a fan and usually closely agree with you.

  91. toochca says:

He definately “squared-up” the double he hit off Castro’s glove yesterday as well!!

  92. 21sthebest says:

Well I’m not going to tell people what they can and can’t get riled up over. The interview is on the web site.

  93. toochca says:

    This group?! Shocker!!

  94. Jim S. says:

Gotta have thick skin in this room. We pounce … quickly!

  95. Jandy says:

    Yeah…we like SOME architects ;)
    And SOME engineers ;)

  96. Jim S. says:

    Thanks for the clarification, 21.

  97. Jim S. says:

Good point. Did they rule that a double? I thought it was an error.

  98. 21sthebest says:

I’m actually listening to this interview again to make sure I didn’t miss anything which is kind of painful because I’ve wanted Frank gone for 3 years and still do!

  99. Nate83 says:

Couldn’t agree more NMR. While he is at it I wouldn’t mind Stark being replaced. Obviously with a good year top to bottom for the organization not much will happen but we can dream right.

  100. Jim S. says:

You two are deep today. Brandie was talking Soul Train and you two are talking Soul Drain. :-)

  101. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    Did he mention Alex Presley?

  102. NMR says:

Especially now with the information that so much of the minor league process was/is data driven.

Makes me even less sure of what Stark brings to the table. Which is saying something.

  103. NMR says:

    Haha, that was sarcastic, right?

  104. Jim S. says:

No, I meant that I laughed through every word of NMR’s post where he talked about the 3-headed monster.

  105. 21sthebest says:

    Who? ;-)

  106. NMR says:

And he takes his fries OFF his sammiches!

  107. toochca says:

Me?! Sarcastic?! NAH!! I believe they did rule it a double though!!

  108. Jim S. says:

Actually, maybe I don’t recall the play exactly. I may have been nodding off. I thought it was a ball hit at Castro that rolled up his body and into LF.

  109. Nate83 says:

I’m convinced that Stark is almost singlehandedly responsible for getting the entire front office fired. I’m not sure if NH and everyone else was on board with what he was doing or just trusting the guy they put in charge but at the end of the day he oversees player development and he is responsible for anything that Stark did.

Maybe he wasn’t aware of the extent of the training but it is his job to be aware. Based on FC’s comments maybe it was him pushing that agenda. All I know is I think we are past all of that and there are much better and positive things to talk about.

DK: Your first sentence is amazingly accurate for someone on the outside. Well done.

  110. Jandy says:

    Oh, the Horror!

  111. NMR says:

hahaha, still getting to know ya, tooch. :)

I had to go back to the replay when I saw it was ruled a double this morning. Marte has magical ball control powers!

  112. toochca says:

Same play!! It looked to me like it hit off his glove. The infield was in at the time.

  113. 21sthebest says:

Mets take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Daisy Duke with four strikeouts through 2.

  114. Jim S. says:

That’s it. Kick him out of town. Next you’ll be saying he thinks Kennywood is overrated.

  115. toochca says:

    Jedi Mind Control!!

  116. Jim S. says:

    Extra credit for proclivity.

  117. gregenstein says:

Making a lineup requires knowing who the opponents SP will be. Since it’s likely to be the Reds or Cardinals and both teams feature pretty much all Righty starters, here’s the lineup I’d trot out…

  118. Jandy says:

    Ahhh silly Nun ;)

  119. Jim S. says:

He’s through 3 scoreless now. I think they are pushing it if they go past 4.

I see he’s facing Matt “Just so you know, if I don’t pitch well for the rest of the year it is because I have pain in my abdomen” Latos.

  120. Jandy says:

seriously, this one has me going a little crazy. lol

  121. NMR says:

    Love your last line.

  122. Nate83 says:

Reds losing 1-0 end of 3rd

  123. gregenstein says:

Tony Sanchez has pretty much been Liriano’s caddy. I wonder if this will continue should the Pirates be involved in the coin flip game…

  124. 21sthebest says:

    :-) He pulled a Roethlisberger.

  125. Jim S. says:

Tony LaRussa rears his ugly head!

  126. Nate83 says:

Maybe he got a tattoo that went bad near his abdomen.

  127. Jim S. says:

I was very close to typing something to that effect.

  128. Jim S. says:

  129. Jandy says:

    Thanks, 21

  130. Milo Hamilton says:

Mat Latos has hit 2 guys in 3+ innings. Practice makes perfect.

  131. 21sthebest says:

See if you hang around me more Jim, I’ll teach you how to not filter anything.

  132. toochca says:

Did AP ever try to convince Joe Mauer to give up #7?! :D

  133. Jandy says:

I’ll be optimistic and go with 100 units on the 2 -3 line.
    Go Bucs!

  134. toochca says:

    My thoughts exactly!!

  135. Jandy says:

What? And he hasn’t been tossed????

  136. Jandy says:

but, you do add your :)

  137. Jim S. says:

I think Martin went in Frankie’s last start, Gregen. I thought that was to get him back reacclimated to Frankie. But, I’m just guessing.

  138. theplanisworking says:

When you can see the snow coming in off the lake, and the next day you have 21″ on the ground, that would drain pretty much everything.

Especially when it happens a dozen times a winter.

  139. Jim S. says:

Mets have a chance to really put a dent in this one with the bases juiced and 2 outs.

  140. toochca says:

    It wasn’t “Intentional”!!

The game that Cutch got hit… I sent a text to my friend prior to his AB saying “Expect Cutch to get hit”.

  141. Jim S. says:

And … so much for that wishful thinking.

  142. theplanisworking says:

    Of course not.
The Umps are in Dustball’s back pocket.

    Silly Nun.

  143. Kevin says:

I agree, this is totally evil and I haven’t gotten any of these right. I am going to “guess” anyway and say…

100 baby grande pianos dropped on the 2-3 line.

I just have this feeling that both of em are going to homer and they will both be solo shots.

  144. theplanisworking says:

  145. Kevin says:

    typo.. grande should be grand…

  146. theplanisworking says:

But we know he likes beer with his sammich.

  147. Jason81 says:

    100 on 2-3 RBI’s, please!

  148. theplanisworking says:

    Oh, come on DK.

EVERYONE knows that the FO are the paragons of truth, class, and professionalism.

    Just ask them.

    Hi Frank!

  149. Kevin says:

I said it yesterday too… but we could totally use another laugher going into the final series of the year. I’m going to go ahead and predict the score tonight as 12-1 pirates. I want to see Morneau hit his first homer as a pirate and get every possible monkey off the backs of our bucs.

  150. Jim S. says:

Mets are fighting so far today. Looks like Latos is going to have to “gut” this one out.

  151. theplanisworking says:

    #lovemybooze. ;)

  152. Naje says:

a good coach (not sure that Baker qualifies as that… well, yes, I’m certain he doesn’t) will tell you that perfect practice makes perfect.

  153. Jandy says:

  154. Jandy says:

  155. Nate83 says:

Just shooting from the hip. Blind squirrel finding a nut.

  156. Jandy says:

    silly me!

  157. Jim S. says:

    Down goes Frazier!

  158. Jandy says:

Well, Central PA isn’t as bad as Erie, so there’s that.
That should soothe my soul :P

  159. Jandy says:

hey, watch it ! I happen to LOVE Kennywood :P

  160. Kevin says:

    goooooo mr. met!

  161. Nate83 says:

Washington already has man on second with no outs. Could 20 years of bad play/luck all turn around in a week starting with Morneau plays at the plate to win on Monday night. No jinx, no jinx, no jinx.

  162. toochca says:

    Ooooops!! It slipped!

  163. Jim S. says:

I think Matsuzaka is one of those pitchers who is just unorthodox enough that, if you’ve never faced him before, he can give you fits. Seems like he might be giving the Reds fits today so far. Vic Black may have a shot at #2 later.

  164. theplanisworking says:

Lots of empty seats in Cincy.

    Quick, call AJ !!! ;)

  165. Nate83 says:

Nationals up 1-0 still have two on 1 out.

  166. 21sthebest says:

    Ba dum tssssss.

  167. Jim S. says:

Chance for a crooked number early.

  168. Arriba Wilver says:

100 Frank Coonelly Whoppers on 2-3, please.

  169. Nate83 says:

lets make it really crooked. Like a 3 or maybe even an 8.

  170. 21sthebest says:

I picked a bad week to quit amphetamines.

  171. Jim S. says:

  172. theplanisworking says:

I will take 25 lying hot dogs …….. errr FRANKS on 2-3, please.

    Go Bucs!
    Go away Coonelly!!

  173. Jim S. says:

My phone says both Desmond and LaRoche lined out to CF. So, only 1 run. Maybe Shelby was fortunate there.

  174. Jandy says:

    Zactly, Jim!

  175. NMR says:

I can vouch for that, Jandy.

Central PA will be the place I retire some day, if I can ever afford to stop working.

  176. Jim S. says:

I think we are going to put up a big comment # on the afternoon blog today.

  177. Jandy says:

That’s what you get for not sharing :P

  178. Jandy says:

NMR, you and me both. I’ll be working for the next 20 years easily.

  179. Lad 9 says:

100 on 2-3 please. Thank you. Go Buccos!

  180. Dom says:

If the Cards and the Buccos have the same record at the end of the season, would the tie go to us?

  181. theplanisworking says:

Did you see my lineup on the morning thread?

  182. Milo Hamilton says:

Billy Hamilton caught stealing by some guy named Juan Centeno.

  183. Kevin says:

ha! billy hamilton caught stealing. Man, I wish I could watch some of this stuff. Sitting in this here office until 5pm EST staring at the gamecast page on my phone.

  184. Jandy says:

    woop woop!!!

  185. Milo Hamilton says:

    Monday at PNC Park.

  186. theplanisworking says:

  187. Kevin says:

+1. way to go c-note, whomever you are!

  188. The Justice Avenger says:

    Brooms are out!

  189. Nate83 says:

Vince Coleman was just heard yelling it’s about time.

  190. tcb says:

    2-3 for 75. Thanks.

  191. Jim S. says:

Gee, I thought he was going to be 1,000 for 1,000 in steals and hit .325 for his career.

  192. gregenstein says:

Yes, all those championships he won are a horrible thing to try and copy.

  193. gregenstein says:

That’s possible. I’ve missed a few games lately.

  194. Stickyweb says:

100 on 4 or more, please. Thanks Playoffs.

  195. Jim S. says:

Latos is at 95 pitches in the 6th. I’m thinking this could be his last inning. I mean, it is heroic that he even took the mound … mysterious abdominal injury and all. True warrior.

  196. Nate83 says:

Yep, him and Puig will go down in history as the best players ever to play the game. Chapmans going to stike out 3000 batters in 1200 innings as well and Santa Clause will be cheered at an Eagles game.

  197. theplanisworking says:

    Hello Mrs Russell. ;)

  198. Jim S. says:

Gotta pay for those suped-up toys somehow, Jandy!

  199. Jandy says:

ha! I told hubby to put his red light out!

  200. Jandy says:

Marte singles to start us off :)

  201. Jandy says:

    and promptly steals second :)

  202. theplanisworking says:

Marte showing what he brings to the top of the lineup.

  203. Jim S. says:

    Marte! Nice start.

  204. Patrick(ri) says:

Would Tabata be lollygagging if he only got to 1st on a dropped fly ball? Excellent, made up for it with sb.

Another negative thought — have your hottest hitter screw up things with a bunt!

  205. theplanisworking says:

    Curious decision, eh?

  206. 21sthebest says:

And this is where Hurdle loses me. With the way Walker is hitting and first base open with no outs at Wrigley Field in the first inning against a poor team, why bunt?

  207. Jim S. says:

If my phone is correct, lefties only bat .190 vs. Arrieta.

  208. Kevin says:

does anyone have the Day-dro versus Night-dro stats on the year? Did I miss the discussion where we proved that Pedro is better during the day because he can see the ball better/less tired/etc?

  209. Nate83 says:

Yes he would. The microscope on that guy is really large. He kind of brought it on himself and it may take a few years for him to shake the reputation.

  210. Patrick(ri) says:

    Curiously typical.

  211. Jandy says:

    makes me crazy gRRRrrr!!

  212. NMR says:

  213. NMR says:

Perfect, Patrick. Difference in perception is huge.

  214. Milo Hamilton says:

I was completely wrong about Daisuke. This is why I don’t bet football.

  215. Jim S. says:

    Day – .211/.269/.429/.695
    Night – .244/.309/.491/.800

Night-Dro is squashing Day-Dro this year.

  216. Jim S. says:

You’re not wrong very often, but I’m glad you are today.

  217. Kevin says:

ah hah! see, that’s why I asked stats. and that also explains why I missed that conversation. oh well, I’m hoping day-dro makes a comeback anyway.

  218. NMR says:

Good thing his classiness is worth at least 10 wins, cuz his managing sucks.

  219. Kevin says:

Daisuke is not pronounced day-sucky. Silly Milo ;)

  220. Jim S. says:

You only get 27 of those things. Why give them away unless you have a horrible guy batting?

  221. Patrick(ri) says:

Thanks. It is not often I am accused of perfection.

  222. 21sthebest says:

  223. Jandy says:

    Cubbies score :/

  224. Jim S. says:

I’m thinking Jay Bell might be an advocate of that 1st inning strategy. I wonder why?

  225. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s probably going to have to be a shutout. One more out of him. One from the decaying carcass of LaTroy Hawkins & Vic Black to close it out.

  226. Jandy says:

    Cards tie it up.

  227. Kevin says:

    boo! bad news, nunny! :(

  228. Patrick(ri) says:

    Your commentary stinks!

  229. Jandy says:

    :/ I know….

  230. Jim S. says:

When I try monitoring 3 afternoon games like this, I feel like I do when I’m watching the Ryder Cup. One minute the US is leading in 3 matches, tied in 3 and losing none. 15 minutes later, we are losing 4 matches and tied in 2. Things change quickly.

  231. Jandy says:

    UGH…our bats are toooo quiet!

  232. theplanisworking says:

    Well, wake them up.

I like my lineup on the morning thread better. ;)

  233. theplanisworking says:

Listening to the reds-Mets game on MLB Network makes out announcers sound good.

    Faint praise.

  234. Patrick(ri) says:

Hope Cumpton is at least stretching . . .

  235. Karen22 says:

Frankie is getting whacked a bit. Settle it down!!

  236. Jim S. says:

You get used to it. :-)

  237. Milo Hamilton says:

Liriano really struggling with his control. Not sharp at all.

  238. I liked that, too, except I can’t pitch. I’d have to develop a knuckle ball to make my 60 MPH fastball look like anything but a cantelope.

  239. Kevin says:

does Liriano look as bad as he does on my game cast do-thingy?

  240. Patrick(ri) says:

No sign of Latroy “zombie” Hawkins yet.

  241. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

4 years and done for me folks. Might have to get a job though, not a career, already had that.

I’ve kicked the idea of Pittsburgh around, a lot, but hard to get past the winter thing.

  242. Jim S. says:

The fall from grace of Puig would not bother me. Let’s let these guys peform for awhile before we put them in the HOF.

Now, Cole, get him in the HOF asap cuz he plays for our team.

  243. The Justice Avenger says:

    Come on Mets!

  244. florida steeler says:

I hope this isn’t an every other start thing developing with Frankie. Should be a short leash this time of year.

  245. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

  246. Jandy says:

    Cards winning 3-1 yuk

  247. Karen22 says:

That was a TOTALLY wasted at bat! MAKES NO SENSE…especially in the FIRST inning!! DAMMIT!

  248. Jim S. says:

    Cards doing what they do.

  249. Milo Hamilton says:

    Thank goodness.

  250. florida steeler says:

I think we are playing for home field against the Reds. Hope I am wrong but the Cards have a solid club. too much offense and their pitching is getting stronger.

  251. Karen22 says:

DRAT! I really thought the Nats would put up a fight.

Good on Frankie for getting it together after the double!

Now – Saaa-Wing batter batter (that would be Buccos)!!

  252. Patrick(ri) says:

Just replaced DiceK with a blind folksinger.

  253. Stickyweb says:

Did he ever bat the pitcher 8th in the playoffs? I thought I remember it being for a while in the regular season and then his meds were adjusted, and he faced realty.

  254. Milo Hamilton says:

    Feliz Navidad.

  255. florida steeler says:

Reds starting trouble. 2 on and two outs–Votto up and Feleciano throws wild pitch to move up runners

  256. Jandy says:

    Another hit for Marte

  257. Stickyweb says:

If he bunts Walker this time, they should definitely fire Hurdle. Though he may do it just to piss all you guys off.

  258. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Looks like Marte’s timing is back.

Nice to see. With 2 outs, there’s no point in standing on second….He gets thrown out, so what, NW leads off next inning.

  259. Jim S. says:

That Reds game doesn’t mean a thing unless we start hitting in our game.

  260. Jandy says:

    C’mon Walker!

  261. Jandy says:

  262. Karen22 says:

Marte – proving his value! Now get him home!!

  263. florida steeler says:

    fly ball. Still 1-0

  264. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    I was saying?

  265. Stickyweb says:

Very true Jim. Of course the difference is that THESE 3 GAMES ACTUALLY MEAN SOMETHING, while the Ryder Cup is golf.

  266. Jandy says:

    Up to Cutch

  267. Arriba Wilver says:

Sounds like you’re playing both sides of the fence.

  268. theplanisworking says:

Will the fence get fired also?

  269. Jandy says:

    will someone straddle it?

  270. theplanisworking says:

If your arm falls off, you could be our team chaplain.

  271. Kevin says:

and he draws a walk :|

  272. The Justice Avenger says:

did I just hear the Reds lost?

  273. Jandy says:

Oh Jeez Cutch walks. Now up to Morneau

  274. Stickyweb says:

It’s almost like Marte didn’t like all the talk about playing Tabby in LF in the playoffs since Marte wasn’t coming around.

  275. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

So I missed the 1st inning.

Are you telling me that NW bunted, after Marte stole 2nd?

Probably the hottest hitter in the lineup, should not drop a freakin bunt down with a runner in scoring position. I understand its a road game, and you do what you can to produce runs, but that sounds backwards to me. If he was struggling at the plate, sure, bunt away.

  276. Jim S. says:

Morneau can maybe turn some people’s feelings around here.

  277. Jandy says:

you hearing voices in your head?

  278. Milo Hamilton says:

1-0 Mets in the 9th. Chapman in for Cincinnati.

  279. Kevin says:

nope, if you did, someones lying to you.

  280. Stickyweb says:

Good time to start on those 4 RBIs I stupidly told Playoffs we would see.

  281. tdb1977 says:

Why not a double steal with Walker breaking for second. If they take the bait and throw to second, send Marte to the plate? If either one gets caught – you have Andrew leading off next inning.

  282. Kevin says:

he didn’t drop it down, pop bunted to the catcher :|

  283. The Justice Avenger says:

yea, it was a lie Kevin…

  284. theplanisworking says:

Yes. Just check this blog. ;)

  285. The Justice Avenger says:

:) Remember…I am one of the Loonies!

  286. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Even better. Still no reason to bunt there.

  287. NMR says:

I never want to take a single at-bat out of Andrew Muccutchens hands.

  288. theplanisworking says:

    Ah, the ol’ bases-loaded walk.

Surprised he wasnt ordered to bunt there…………… ;)

  289. Jandy says:

    Walked in a run. wow

  290. Jim S. says:

    Good enough.

  291. Kevin says:

WOOT! another RBI for Morneau… even if it is a bases loaded walk.

  292. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

aw, a Little League play…….Walker would easily be thrown out.

  293. Milo Hamilton says:

When Andrew McCutchen is at the plate, HE is in scoring position.

  294. Jim S. says:

I wonder if it is “date night” for Chap.

  295. Arriba Wilver says:

Just one more for the contest.

  296. Jandy says:

    YES, you are :P

  297. theplanisworking says:

  298. Stickyweb says:

A Dub, to set the record straight, I HATE bunting anyone other than the pitcher in the first 6 or 8 innings of a game. Was just making a joke since there were 2 outs this time. I probably should have included myself in my last sentence, I was just too slow that I hadn’t commented on it before when so many others had.

  299. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

I’ll take a walk there….ties it up. Would’ve liked to have seen more-no.

  300. Jandy says:

Now it’s up to GI Jones

  301. Jandy says:

Does that count as a RBI?

  302. Jim S. says:

And the little league play is throw it to the SS, and he guns the runner at home. My son did that from SS 3x this year. Doesn’t work even in U11 after May.

  303. NMR says:

So glad Jones is batting here and not Pedro! It’s pure science, after all, that Pedro can only hit 6th.

  304. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    Crap Jones

  305. Jandy says:

  306. Stickyweb says:

Did he just double his Bucco RBIs?

  307. Jim S. says:

    Yes, ma’am.

  308. NMR says:

  309. Jandy says:

  310. Jim S. says:

    Easy there, Thomas Dolby!

  311. Jandy says:

okies cool. I meant on Playoffs bets, tho.

  312. florida steeler says:

Why is he even in the lineup??? I’d rather take chances with Gaby over Jones.

  313. Jandy says:

I seriously would rather see Travis freakin Snider out there at this point.

  314. Jandy says:

    or as florida says, Gabby.

  315. The Justice Avenger says:

hate to leave ‘em loaded, but at least we got one…

  316. Jim S. says:

I heard his “date” can’t come to the phone right now cuz she’s all tied up.

  317. florida steeler says:

Ha-ha–you are correct–Lunch Pail would be better.

  318. Jandy says:

    slight solace :(

  319. Milo Hamilton says:

The decaying carcass of LaTroy Hawkins is in to close. Nooooooooooo.

  320. Patrick(ri) says:

“Ageless” (Cincy colorman description) is in. His recents stats have been great.

  321. Jim S. says:

Phillips grounds out on 3-1 pitch. Haha! Nice start, LaTroy!

  322. Jim S. says:

I should have known you knew better.

  323. Jandy says:

    Nice catch by Dekker!

  324. Milo Hamilton says:

Hawkins hitting 96 on the gun.

  325. Jim S. says:

    One more, LaTroy!

  326. theplanisworking says:

I heard she escaped………… phone and all. ;)

  327. Kevin says:

CIN-city down to their last out with Frazier to go.

  328. Jandy says:

    I freakin can’t stand Phillips

  329. Jim S. says:

  330. Milo Hamilton says:

He’s been a really good pitcher. Rubber arm. Obviously at his age. Let’s talk about him this winter.

  331. Jandy says:

yeah I know THAT much..and still learnin more everyday from yinz guys :)

  332. theplanisworking says:

Tell us how you really feel?

  333. Jandy says:

Liriano got outta that one too…whew

  334. War Horse says:

If Pirates win today, they only need to win one out of three in Cincinnati this weekend to have home field advantage in the one Wild Card game Tuesday.

  335. Patrick(ri) says:

Chalk one up for the Undead!

  336. Jandy says:

    woop wooop!!!

  337. theplanisworking says:

Dustball choked on his toothypick. ;)

  338. Jim S. says:

    Now, our game is HUGE!

  339. Bizrow says:

    Now we need the W

  340. theplanisworking says:

I forgot to wish you a Happy Hump Day earlier. ;)

  341. Jandy says:

    Seriously. Cannot stand him…

  342. Jandy says:

    Hey, thanks sweetie :*

  343. Jandy says:

  344. Nate83 says:

Wow this suddenly becomes an important game. Win today and we only have to take one against the Reds for home field. We are seeing today why Liriano needs to pitch at home. He is much better at PNC park.

  345. Jandy says:

Sending all the strong, good vibes I can, Biz!

  346. Bizrow says:

LaTroy must have had some Hoka Hey training recently ;-)

  347. Milo Hamilton says:

Very simple now. Two more wins. Play .500 the rest of the way.

  348. Jim S. says:

    + many.

  349. Jandy says:

    Yes and yes.

  350. Bizrow says:

  351. War Horse says:

    Matsazuka pitched a four hitter!

Lots of empty seats at GABallpark.

Thank you Mets. We owe you.

  352. Jandy says:

  353. theplanisworking says:

  354. Jandy says:

    woop woop!!!!

  355. Patrick(ri) says:

Sure that isn’t Cutch in a body suit?

  356. Reading says:

Stating the obvious: Huge difference between needing 1 out of 3 in Cincy to secure the Wild Card game at PNC, and 2 out of 3. Cannot let this game get away.

  357. Milo Hamilton says:

Said it before & I’ll say it again. There is no better baserunner on this team than Pedro Alvarez.

  358. Jim S. says:

    True ‘dat.

  359. Jandy says:

a triple on an error…love it!

  360. Liriano is averaging 22 pitches an inning. Safe to say he won’t be tossing a complete game today.

Might be a good day for some Sept. callup to show his mettle.

  361. Jim S. says:

    Little League triple for Pedro?

  362. Patrick(ri) says:

I think Castro makes Tabata look like Pete Rose.

  363. Or metal.

    There is enough mettle already.

  364. The Justice Avenger says:

A great incentive for the Bucs!!

  365. theplanisworking says:

Have you perfected that knuckler yet?? ;)

  366. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

I’m not a real fan of Pedro batting in front of Barmes. Might as well just bat him 8th. He’s not going to see any pitches to hit in that spot.

  367. Jandy says:

I’d love to see barmes hit Petey in just to piss off Mr. Hasis ;)

  368. To think some wanted him rather than Barmes and his .214 BA at short.

    What a sacrilage.

  369. Jandy says:

    UGH I jinxed him!

  370. Patrick(ri) says:

Little league pick off to go with it.

  371. Jandy says:

  372. Only on a whiffle ball.

  373. Kevin says:

You guys are thinking this the wrong way. Yes, we would be up 2 if we won today. But, would you still feel ok if we lost the weekend series to the reds and then have to play them again on Tuesday? I personally hope we sweep the Reds. And being up by 2 just gives us the low stress condition to do it. Cause really, the pressures would be on the Reds.

  374. Jandy says:

    Send Spunky in!

  375. theplanisworking says:

    Way to go, doofus!!! ;)

Its ok, Pedro showed his chops running that hit into a triple.

  376. Stickyweb says:

Huge difference. It’s literally 1 more game. :-)

  377. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    Please disregard this message.

  378. Jandy says:

  379. Jim S. says:

Nobody said we didn’t want to sweep the Reds. But, you would you really rather go in there up 1 instead of 2?

  380. Milo did. (I can’t see it. It probably couldn’t be avoided. Don’t believe in jinxes or rabbits’ feet) :)

  381. Kevin says:

you sure did… we just needed a pop fly to the outfield… and instead he lines out. SMHLM (shaking my head like milo)

  382. Jandy says:

    toooo late!

  383. Jim S. says:

I didn’t know what happened, other than we stranded him. How did we screw that up?

  384. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ve come to a conclusion. When you have a guy on 3rd,

  385. Nate83 says:

I personally only care about the play-in game. I would like to play that game at home but all that matters is actually winning that game.

  386. theplanisworking says:

he would be our Angel in the Outfield. ;)

  387. florida steeler says:

Wow, way to screw up an inning.

  388. Milo Hamilton says:

hit the ball to the outfield. That’s all.

  389. Stickyweb says:

Are you sure you came to a conclusion? :-)

  390. Patrick(ri) says:

You ask the other team if they would 3 outs for the run.

  391. Karen22 says:

  392. Kevin says:

No, I just want them to win. And it shouldn’t matter that we only have to win 1. Although, it does make me curious. If we are up 2 and end up winning the 1st game, how do we approach the next two games… knowing that we will host the wild card on Tuesday against the Reds.

  393. Patrick(ri) says:

  394. theplanisworking says:

    Hit a HR.

    Fixed it for ya.

  395. Karen22 says:

YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  396. Jandy says:

I jinxed Barmes…read my post at the top of this thread…lol

  397. Jandy says:

    or a Collusion?

  398. Reading says:

Well, the Pirates win Friday and then can rest guys, set up pitching rotation how they want it, etc. Yeah, one game is huge.

  399. Milo Hamilton says:

He was off on contact. But hey, get the stinking bunt down or Sanchez get the ball out of the infield.

  400. Stickyweb says:

Playoffs are all that matter at this point. The division seems lost at this point. Getting home field in the WC is next. If we have that by winning today and Friday, I wouldn’t care about Sat. or Sun. games at all. Start Stolmy and Cumpton for those and 2 different Sunday lineups those games so everyone can catch their breath for the playoffs.

  401. Karen22 says:

Theme ALL year long for the Pirates: Runner on third with less than two outs is actually a scoring LIABILITY! (Ripping my hair out by the gray roots)!

  402. Patrick(ri) says:

  403. Jandy says:

Liriano got out of that inning too.
Now if we could get the bats swinging for hits…

  404. theplanisworking says:

  405. theplanisworking says:

Well, get on your Holy Hump Day camel, and fix that !!!

  406. Jim S. says:

    One more inning for Francisco.

  407. Jim S. says:

But, if we win today and Friday, how can the division be lost? We’d be down 2, at most.

  408. Jandy says:

Dang, I have to go get this contract out today. C’mon, guys, get the W today…catch Yinz all later!

  409. buggee says:

did it take much for you to be going a lil crazy jandylicious?

  410. Jim S. says:

Depends on where we stand vs. Cards.

  411. Reading says:

I guess the Reds would be able to rest guys, etc. also if that scenario played out, but at least the WC game would be at PNC Park.

  412. buggee says:

    the Sensornatti Deads

  413. theplanisworking says:

    or a Collision?

  414. theplanisworking says:

  415. Kevin says:

cards would have to lose the rest of their games.

  416. buggee says:

    gray roots are HOT

  417. Jim S. says:

If we are down 2 after gaining WC homefield on Friday evening, we still have to play all out on Saturday because the division is still available. If the Cards then win or we lose on Sat., that makes Sun pointless. Stolmy or Straight out of Cumpton can pitch Sunday.

  418. Nahcllib says:

You do realize the pirates only need 1 win at cincy regardless of what they do here right?

They win the intra division TB

  419. Kevin says:

+ and another SB for Starling Marte… 3 on the day.

  420. Jim S. says:

Uh oh. Neverett is going to start another Cutch 0’fer streak on Friday if he doesn’t get a hit before this game is over.

  421. NMR says:

    Stupid move.

As long as Justin Morneau is hitting cleanup, why take the bat out of Cutch’s hands?

  422. Nahcllib says:

The first TB is season series…would be 9 all if we win 1….second is intradivision record. Dont know why they arent telling us this info

  423. Kevin says:

no, did not realize that. I thought it was head-to-head. Also thought record head-to-head with Cincy with 8-8.

  424. NMR says:

I had to unfollow 24/7 earlier this year when he was on his 0-RISP kick. Incredibly annoying.

  425. Stickyweb says:

Didn’t you see my smiley face thing? I made the same points as you a little farther down the comments.

  426. Nahcllib says:

Head to head is now 8 to 7… Play 18 total

  427. Jim S. says:

If they lose 2 to Cincy, they lose the season series 10-9. If they are only 1 game up on Cincy in the standings heading into the weekend, losing 2 of 3 gives them the same record. Therefore, the play-in game would be at GABP.

  428. Kevin says:

cant we call it a slump anyway? So far he’s 0-1 + a walk with RISP.

  429. Nahcllib says:

Dude they dont play 19 games against cincy

  430. Jim S. says:

They play 19 times. Can’t tie season series, if I am understanding you correctly.

  431. Jim S. says:

Right now, it is 8-8. You play teams in your own division 19x.

  432. Nahcllib says:

Are you sure they play 19?

  433. Dom says:

    Go buccos!

  434. Milo Hamilton says:

The series is 8-8. There are 3 more for a total of 19 games. There can’t be a tie in the season series.

  435. Jim S. says:

    It is.

  436. Kevin says:

well I dunno, maybe you should buy into the lottery with that liar of yours. He was eventually proofed correct. :)

  437. Nahcllib says:

I stand corrected…so no need for the second TB

  438. Jim S. says:

    Thank you, Milo.

  439. Milo Hamilton says:

Junior Lake obviously sees Starlin Castro as his role model.

  440. Stickyweb says:

Good point Jim. I hadn’t hought through that the division wouldn’t technically be lost at that point. Still can’t expect Cubbies to take 2 of 3 from Cards in STL (even though they’re better away from Wrigley)

  441. Ghost says:

    Hi Gang.
Looking for a temporary team name to use for entering my kid and his teammates into tournaments. Was thinking of “The Lampshades.”
    Any better suggestions???

  442. Jim S. says:

No worries. I get twisted up with the tiebreaker stuff all the time.

  443. NMR says:

    The Lolligaggers!

  444. twentytwo22 says:

    Our hitters are morons.

  445. War Horse says:

Okay, folks, here are the facts:

The 1st stat to decide homefield choice in the Wild Card playoff game is which team has the best record for 162 games.

If the two WC teams are tied, the team with the best record against the other has home field for the one game playoff.

The Pirates-Cincy record against each other as of today is 8-8.

Figure it out. If we win today, we need only one out of three in Cincy to play off at PNC because we will be one game ahead in the standings.

If we lose today, we have to take two out of three at GABP over the weekend to have home field for the WC platoff.

That’s it. If we lose all three in Cincy (God forbid), we playoff at GABP.

  446. Jim S. says:

For all the good things this team does, we have to be the worst team in MLB at getting runners in from 3b with less than 2 outs.

  447. Milo Hamilton says:

Runner on 3rd, less than 2 outs. Your thought is one thing & one thing only – in the air the other way.

  448. theplanisworking says:

    Cards win……………….. crap.

Bucs have left 128 runners on base today………… crap.

  449. Ghost says:

Okay, we now have Choice #1 — The Lolligaggers! (Exclamation mark, included).

  450. NMR says:

Pedro’s GB showed up on the inside corner according to the computer machine. Right at Rizzo?

  451. Stickyweb says:

Too funny Milo. On a serious note, isn’t it nice to have Cutch as Marte’s role model (and Polanco’s mid season next year)?

  452. Karen22 says:

    AND AGAIN!! Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!!

  453. Ghost says:

And now we have Choice #2.
    Any others??

  454. Jim S. says:

    Hurdle’s Gum.

  455. theplanisworking says:

    The replacements.

  456. theplanisworking says:

    Leyva’s Loons.

  457. Kevin says:

so wait, we just got a leadoff double from Morneau and then failed to score him with 2 straight ground ball outs and a K? :(… sounds like we need some Byrd magic.

  458. Jim S. says:

    The Stranded Runners.

  459. Jim S. says:

    Is it baseball, Ghost?

  460. Milo Hamilton says:

    Yes ! :)

  461. theplanisworking says:

    The Bunting Boobs.

  462. Jim S. says:

Why is he still pitching, fast approaching 100 and a very big game possibly looming Tuesday? I’d save him, and trust someone else to shut down the Cubs.

  463. Kevin says:

so wait, we need to win the rest of our games and Chicago needs to take 2 out of 3 from the cards to force a 1 game playoff to determine the “winner” who then has to play the Reds in the WC? :(

  464. Ghost says:

    Yes, boys 16U.

  465. florida steeler says:

Do we still have John Buck?? Thought we got him to be backup—Sanchez is a horrible hitter.

  466. Milo Hamilton says:

  467. Stickyweb says:

That’s just the runners left on 3rd base, plan.

  468. Ghost says:

My son’s nickname is Bubby (coincidentally — not after Bubby Brister), and I sometimes call him Booby, around the house. He would never forgive me if we went with this name.

  469. Nate83 says:

They are also very good at hitting solo home runs. Maybe it is on par with the rest of the league but it seems to me that they hit an unusual amount of solo home runs. Hardly ever get a 2 or 3 run homerun.

  470. theplanisworking says:

    Could try 0-RISP…………

  471. Kevin says:

I was hoping for another 9 pitch inning… obviously that hasn’t happened :|

  472. Kevin says:

right FS, he’s only the guy with the best batting average on the pirates for the month of September (before today). So yes, he sucks.

  473. Jim S. says:

The XFips? The BABIPs? Ok, just kidding. Although I sort of like Gladys Knight and the XFips.

I’m standing by The Stranded Runners and Hurdle’s Gum.

  474. theplanisworking says:

    + many. :)

  475. theplanisworking says:

    Milo’s boy, Mazzaro is a-comin’ in. :)

  476. Nate83 says:

I’m on the fence with this one Jim. He would still be pitching on 5 days rest which is his normal amount. Maybe keeping him stretched out and pitching what he may have to pitch in 5 days isn’t the worse thing. I wouldn’t want him laboring at pitch 105 next Tuesday because he hasn’t done that in a while.

  477. theplanisworking says:

    The Hefty Hippos? ;)

  478. Milo Hamilton says:

I was planning on yard work tonight. I think this one’s going past dark.

  479. theplanisworking says:

    Crap !

  480. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ll let you guys handle this one.

  481. florida steeler says:

Good one Hurdle–never ceases to amaze!!!!

  482. Stickyweb says:

Yup, that pretty much sums it up. But look at it this way. If they get to that point and lose the 1 game against Cards, they get to play a 2nd 1 game against the Reds, in effect giving them 2 chances to win 1 game to get to the NLDS.

  483. Karen22 says:

Nice taking advantage of Cincy’s loss today….

Stranding 1,000 baserunners in scoring position and leaving Frankie in too long.

  484. Karen22 says:

Yeah – just a few pitches too late.

  485. Patrick(ri) says:

What does Brown mean “of all people.” This guy has been drilling Liriano all day. Hurdle’s handling of when to pull or not pull just amazes me, acknowleging it is tough to argue with 90+ wins.

  486. Jim S. says:

93 pitches is a tough day for 5 innings. It is not like 93 pitches in 6 or 7 innings. That is why I wondered how he could send Frankie back out for the 6th, knowing he likely needs him completely fresh on Tuesday.

  487. BDHumbert says:

Wonder what the thinking was – I guess you let your ace try and get a win – but this was pretty stupid IMHO….

Once the Cards put up a win you have to think that you are headed for a one game playoff that you want Frankie to start – and win. Hopefully in the Burgh…

Winning 2 out of three in Cincy gets you the home field – Liriano clearly did not have it today – get him on the plane back to Pittsburgh and tell him to chill til Tuesday :-)

  488. Ghost says:

Might use your Hefty Hawaiian babe with the coconut shells as the team logo if we go with this one. ;)

  489. Nate83 says:

I hope they come back and win but if they don’t I’m just goint to act like the Reds won today and this game didn’t mean anything. I know that’s not realistic but it helps me sleep at night so I’m going with it.

  490. 21sthebest says:

Well Tuesday is with 5 days rest.

  491. BDHumbert says:

If I never see Vin Mazarro or Brian Morris pitch again it will be too soon…

  492. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

McDonald has had FL number all day. Should’ve been pulled.

  493. Reading says:

My bad. I guess it’s irrelevant now. Not overcoming a 3-run deficit.

  494. Jim S. says:

But, he was hitting .215 when we got him, and had 2/3 of his HR for the year before May 1. He has not hit a ball hard yet, really. He hit several ground balls up the middle in his first couple of starts. Clint probably felt it was just good fortune of where he placed the balls. And, he is thought of as maybe the worst pitch framer and one of the worst throwers of any catcher in baseball.

  495. irishjim says:

    Perfectly said.

  496. Reading says:

Done in by JMac’s brother or cousin. Somewhat ex-Pirate factor jinx at work today.

  497. Jim S. says:

It’s a tough call. And he gets the tough calls right more often than I do.

  498. BDHumbert says:

Walk is going gaga over a .250 hitter who hits 20 homers – what has the world come to.

  499. NMR says:

  500. NMR says:

    Nice call, boss.

  501. Reading says:

I guess if Tuesday is on the road, they have to go with AJ, Morton or Cole. Liriano not the same away from PNC.

  502. Patrick(ri) says:

Letting him hit again against Liriano is the stupidist decision of the year — all the signs were obvious, the stakes enormous, the result very likely. Perhaps CH was hoping for a 3rd double?

  503. NMR says:

    Kevin is talking about Tony.

Your sarcasm meter needs recalibrated. :)

  504. Jim S. says:

True. My point, though, is 93 in 5 is some stressful innings. I look at that like more than 110 for 7. I don’t push that. But, that’s just one guy’s opinion. Clint and Ray and Frankie all know a whole lot more about what was going on than I do.

I just wonder sometimes if he worries about getting his vets (AJ & FL) wins.

Very tough call. Could have gone either way.

  505. Nate83 says:

Are you just playing along? I’m still waiting for that sarcasm font.

  506. Jim S. says:

Can’t remember the last 1-2-3 inning for Morris, especially.

  507. Milo Hamilton says:

In 9 road starts since the All Star break, Francisco Liriano has a 5.96 ERA.

  508. Kevin says:

Is this on purpose? everybody knows that Liriano’s bounce back game is way better… I just hope its at home.

  509. Nate83 says:

Are the Pirates giving out participaton ribbons now. The pinch hitting over the last few weeks is driving me crazy. Not only the amount of them but the choice of who gets them and when.

  510. Kevin says:

we cant even hit a pitcher named Grimm with an ERA of 6+??

  511. NMR says:

    Oh yeah?

  512. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    Lambo…good choice.

I’m usually not critical of the manager, but today………….eh, worthy.

  513. Jim S. says:

Sorry, Kevin! Thought you were on board the Buck express.

  514. Patrick(ri) says:

Lambo may have replaced Snider, who would have bunted if Barmes had reached base?

  515. BDHumbert says:

A guy with 29 home runs should get an opportunity in Wrigley – who did you want to see? Travis Snider?

  516. Milo Hamilton says:

Why did Barmes even bat ?

  517. BDHumbert says:

Why is Barmes even on the team would be an even better question

  518. Milo Hamilton says:

Actually, that’s a guy with 0 home runs.

  519. NMR says:

I’m currently tied with Andrew Lambo in home runs that count.

  520. Kevin says:

Barmes can throw from short to 1st?

  521. BDHumbert says:

Well if they split games one and two in Cincy the Cole has to go on Sunday to get home field for Frankie..

Otherwise – save Cole for Tuesday in Cincy..

  522. I agree with Hurdle. I would have stayed with Liriano.

1/ He’s the best you have, even on an uneven performance day.
2/ The odds of McDonald getting another hit had to be astronomical. I would have bet more on a doubleplay.
3/ Liriano on a bad day is a better pitcher than Vin Mazzarro.
4/ Liriano had gotten out of jams all day. Why not one more time?

Francisco Liriano would have to have a broken arm for me to choose Vin Mazarro over him. [Oh, yeah, he did that, didn’t he?]

  523. Jim S. says:

I think that is a function of low OB%, for the most part.

  524. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

I want the guy with 29 HRs, or a HR at a MLB level. If this was a AA/AAA pitcher. Lambo would probalby get my call then.

  525. Jim S. says:

    Streak intact.

  526. BDHumbert says:

Again – give me a better option?

I think they should have given Lambo a legitimate shot at right field around the All Star break – look at the numbers for Byrd and Morneau and tell me he would have been a lot worse. I liked both trades – but they did not work out – the offense still sucks 2 of 3 games…

  527. NMR says:

He would have been a lot worse.

  528. I hate listening to Tim Neveritt. He sits spouting inane statistics that have nothing to do with THIS GAME, THE ONE HE IS ANNOUNCING!! Now he is talking about dress code!

I keep reaching for the remote to turn off the sound, as I do at home.

Then I remember I am listening on the radio. Turning it off does not help.

  529. BDHumbert says:

    So could Ronnie Cedano…

  530. BDHumbert says:

Watching Morris pitch is only slightly less painful than a root canal.

  531. Arriba Wilver says:

  532. Milo Hamilton says:

Friday will be the 3rd time this year AJ Burnett has made consecutive starts against the same team.

    1st game – 22 IP / 4 ER / 1.64 ERA

    2nd game – 8.2 IP / 10 ER / 10.38 ERA

I noticed this last year also. The hitters have made the adjustments, he hasn’t.

  533. Lambo would have been WAY WORSE!!!

  534. Jim S. says:

    Not nearly often enough.

  535. NMR says:

    Git thez bums ahtta hear!

  536. NMR says:

    small sample size

  537. Arriba Wilver says:

    When he could find it.

The Ronny “Cedano” love since he left is deafening.

  538. NMR says:

These must be the guys that voted him 3rd place for Gold Glove his last year with the team.

  539. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

  540. Arriba Wilver says:

Did Andrew spit on Tim Neverett sometime or insult his family?

He’s on his case again today.

    Tim Neverett.

  541. Karen22 says:

Need Cutch to hit. Not a good week at all for him.

Saving it for Cincy?? (I said “HIT” – not “Get hit.).

    It’s TIME!!

  542. Arriba Wilver says:

  543. I’ll bet you a Lyle Overbay baseball that AJ gives up 3 runs or less on Friday.

  544. theplanisworking says:

  545. BDHumbert says:

The guy pitching wasn’t Cy Young – and Lambo has acquited himself well – the third strike was in a perfect spot.

I don’t know what you guys want – there are lots of players on this team who have sucked in the second half – and some who are sucking – some would say choking under the pressure [take a look at the MVPs September splits]

The pitching staff is pretty darn good for the most part and even though I have some issues with some of the bullpen – it has been an asset all year.

  546. Karen22 says:

I’m on his case, too. Hasn’t looked MVP-ish for quite awhile.

(But Neverett is annoying and I’m not). ;)

  547. NMR says:

    Not gonna bite? :)

    That is alarming.

Follows his trend the third time through the order.

  548. BDHumbert says:

wonder what his BA is since the plunk…

  549. Brandie says:

    Past time for everyone.

  550. Milo Hamilton says:

I sold it, did you buy it ? :)

  551. MadTurk says:

well just got home and I see it does not matter what the other teams do if we don’t take care of our own business. We need a comeback win here.

  552. But he was FIRST PLACE for sliding into 1st Base.

Maybe the dumbest baseball player I have ever seen.

No, wait . . . I saw Navarro run the bases last night! He wins.

  553. Brandie says:

128 runners on base, in one game Plan?

  554. NMR says:

Did this guy really just call out the player with a September OPS over 1000 in defense of Andrew Friggin Lambo?

  555. Jim S. says:

I predicted it … and I’m not even watching. Maybe Cutch rested a bottled water on his head around the batting cage or something.

  556. bizrow says:

Still looking for some lunatics to join our fantasy league

  557. I found it deserted in the street. The guy didn’t want it.

  558. Jim S. says:

I don’t think AJ is an “adjustments” kind of guy. Not wired that way.

  559. Milo Hamilton says:

3 for 18 since, well, you know. They’ll need to make sure to get him again on Friday just to reinforce the point. And don’t think they won’t.

  560. NMR says:

You don’t really buy this, do you Milo?

  561. Stickyweb says:

And if it could be worse, all 3 times the 1st game was at home and 2nd game was on the road. Maybe the law of averages will show up to help AJ out.

  562. Boy, in my opinion, Bucs have gone with their 3 weakest playoff roster relievers today.

I guess I should note that all “ran through the raindrops” but also gave up NO runs.

  563. Milo Hamilton says:

It was right next to the Morneau ball, wasn’t it ? :)

  564. Morneau’s must have been a foul ball.

He’s saving his power for the Playoffs.

  565. Milo Hamilton says:

    Oh absolutely I do.

  566. Wasting another golden opportunity today. All they had to do was win and they only had to win one game this weekend to get the home game.

  567. Milo Hamilton says:

Need to get Marte up against Gregg. The Cubs can’t let him face Marte again, can they ?

  568. There one more run and a man on third. More hits please!!

  569. Stickyweb says:

Really? Including Jeanmar there? And actually I like Vinnie too. Much rather have either of them than Lurch (who I think qualifies for post season, though I could be wrong on that.)

  570. Milo Hamilton says:

I guess they figure it won’t happen 3 times.

  571. Jim S. says:

A hustling Tabby gets a HR there. Lolligagger! :-)

  572. Stickyweb says:

Everyone here will let you know after the AB is finished.

  573. NMR says:

    Speaking of three times…

  574. Karen22 says:

  575. MadTurk says:

Can’t wait for a mistake, have to protect the plate. Those were strikes.

  576. 0 – 12 with runners in scoring position, including leaving 3 on 3rd with less than 2 outs!!!

Now know what they have to do———win 2 of 3 on the road at Cincy. Actually intense way to end the season!!!

  577. twentytwo22 says:

Runner at 3rd and left there by idiot hitters.. even in the 9th. I don’t want to watch this at home. Let them go meekly into the offseason on the road.

  578. Fitting that we get beat by James McDonald’s Cousin today. Division title is pretty much in the bag for STL. Now we need to win two against the Reds. This offense better wake the bleep up in Cincy. With the exception of yesterday, they had been averaging about 5 hits or so the last week, and Cutch has not done too much to help it. He is definitely not the only one though. He has carried this team most of the season, so he will get a slight pass on this one.

  579. MadTurk says:

You really want to see the replay?

  580. If Bucs keep 4 starters and 11 relievers (dropping Locke), Lurch doesn’t catch a sniff of the roster.

  581. Karen22 says:

I saw the replay…three strikes – fully half of the ball in the box – all three!

  582. Idiot. (me, I mean.) 4 starters — 7 relievers = 11 pitchers

  583. Karen22 says:

So do I…it’s worked so far.

  584. 22 Squared,

If you were standing in front of me and said that, I would slap you on both sides of your face and challenge you to a duel.

  585. Karen22 says:

Yeah, but will WE get 3 runs or more??

  586. Maybe worst defensive series of the year for the Pirates.

Only the crazy Official Scorer stopped them from having double figure errors in this series. Cutch started it out again in this game by not hustling on that Barney single that turned into a double and an earned run against Liriano.

Even Monday’s win ending on great defensive plays by McCutchen, Morneau, and Martin started with an error by Byrd.

  587. Patrick(RI) says:

Weapons? You get Hurdle, 22 gets Baker. A real duel of the titans. hurdle has great starters, no hitters and a weakening bull pen and no recent playoff experience for most of his troops. Dusty has decent starters, several top shelf hitters lots of post season experience, and a killer closer. 22 should win with the added home field adv., but he has Dusty around his neck. Too close to call.

  588. twentytwo22 says:

The NL MVP resides in St. Louis. Matt Carpenter or Yadier Molina. They set a ML record for professional hitting. They will win the division. The Pirates will probably finish third and choke with runners on base. Anybody who votes McCutchen for NL MVP should have the privilege revoked.

  589. Patrick(RI) says:

+1. But we better wait and see what happens in The Great American Entertainment Park, with respect to MVP.

  590. Arriba Wilver says:

  591. Arriba Wilver says:

True about the not being annoying like Neverett. Not on Cutch.

He has an OPS of 1.019 in Sept.

Had an OPS of 1.021 in August.

Last week or so, yeah, but dang, no one can do what he does day in, day out for 6 months.

    No one.

He’ll be fine. And he has a legit shot at MVP.

  592. Arriba Wilver says:

Glad to see everyone is in a positive mood, Groat. (I don’t mean you). :-D

    Can I be your second?

  593. John Lease says:

You will all have to quit jinxing the Pirates with these sweep predictions!

  594. John Lease says:

Let me know the day Gaby plays rightfield.

  595. John Lease says:

I know, that was a bit of a kharma bite back. I guess we should have waited until after the season was over to DFA him?

  596. Thundercrack says:

My subscription for MLB.TV just paid for itself as I could go back and watch the ‘scrum’ between the Brewers & Braves.

Carlos Gomez is an idiot…and so are the Brewers.
Paul Maholm was the pitcher for the Braves. And why does it seem like the Braves are involved in a lot of brawls every year?

  597. Thundercrack says:

Did you listen to the interview and what exactly he said?

  598. Patrick(ri) says:

Warn him to watch out for the toothpick when he slaps his cheek. On the other hand, 22 will be tied up trying to pull that wad of bubblegum from between his fingers.

  599. The Gunner says:

You are correct, Tanked Frank must have been sauced while he was on the Fan yesterday.

Frank certainly re-confirmed that he is truly a horse’s rear.

  600. Chuck H says:

Hurdle, you idiot, everything was screaming, take Liriano out, he was done. He was
tired. You have 20 relievers, why the hell don’t you use them. If I owned the team, you
would not be back next year. Your bad decisions cost the team another loss. O.K., that
and the team’s inability to hit with RISP. Get lost!!!

  601. I got this one, Wilver Dornel . . . . (still one of your best ever!!)

    Pirates——91 wins
    Hurdle——-67 loses

  602. John Lease says:

So, how many games do you think Hurdle mis-managed into losses?

Zero? Even Danny Murtaugh blew games, it happens.

A reasoned approach is to take the good with the bad. Hurdle is clearly a huge net plus. Doesn’t mean he can’t be plussier, if that is a word.

  603. Drew71 says:

Did Hurdle lose the morning thread, too?

  604. Jandy says:

We can always blame him, since Dejan won’t take the blame. Heck, he’s across the pond, what do you want him to do?? :P

  605. Jandy says:

Pirates blew it yesterday. I caught the end of the game…Marte looking at strikes stinks. Don’t blame Hurdle, like every loss, this was a team effort.

Pens blew the Wings out 5-1…with Kunitz having two of those five. I am thrilled for the Pirates having this magical season, but still looking forward to hockey.

Hope Dejan got his Starbucks fix. He’s gonna need it.

  606. Drew71 says:

    New game.

What Do We Want Dejan To Do?

    – Predict the Reds?
    – Throw at Gomez?
    – Watch three strikes to end the game?
    – Throw at Thunder?

  607. Drew71 says:

Found this real, honest to goodness, no fooling quote.

“Be grateful for luck. Pay the thunder no mind.”

    Eubie Blake

    I have nothing to add.

  608. JAL says:

Finding no morning thread I put the Morning links on the Podcast thread

  609. Jandy says:

    -All of the above

  610. Jandy says:

Eubie was way before his time.
    That is all.

  611. Jandy says:

Works for me JAL. thanks :)

  612. theplanisworking says:

Thunder and Ollie Luck in the same sentence.

    Be very skeered.
