  4. The butterflies are in full force, the excitement palpable. I so don’t want this joyous season to come to an end. What an amazing journey the Pirates have taken us on in 2013. Do they have even more to give?

I think many would agree Baseball is a very mental sport. Here is where I believe the Pirates could generate an advantage tonight. Before the three game series in Cinci to close out the regular season, Reds reliever Sam LeClure stated the Reds wanted to win those games and take that series to cast doubt amongst the Pirates that they could beat them.

Well it was the Pirates who flipped that script and may have been the ones to cast doubt. Now we all know the previous 19 meetings this season will have nothing to do with tonight’s final and most important chapter.

However, if the Pirates can somehow get off to a quick start, the energy of the crowd rises maybe it will get in the Reds players heads that seed of doubt. If they start thinking of anything other than that pitch, that current singular situation, or press just a little it could lead to an advantage.

Baseball is all about how you deal with the failures, the Reds have closed their season with many as they have lost five straight headed into tonight’s contest and their offense has grown silent of late. Here’s to a couple quick, early shutdown innings from Frankie.

    Go Bucs!

  5. Now is the time for all good Pirates to come to the aid of their team.

  6. - West and Barksdale on the ump crew, thrown Clint out several times this year. Has a warning been given due to Crusty Baker’s love of hitting Cutch?

    - Will Ludwick keep doing the opposite of what he did while as a Pirate?

    - Is Billy Hamilton active for Reds?

    - gonna go with Walker as hero tonight, just a gut feeling.

    - can’t wait to see PNC rock tonight. Never thought it woukd happen.

    Let’s Go Buc’s

  8. Something tells me this Bucco team is in the right fram of mind to close out the Reds tonight. They really impressed me with that this past weekend.

  10. Need Liriano to shut the Reds down. I’d love to see a crooked number by the Bucs in the first to get the crowd riled up and into the game.

If the Bucs are up 2-0 in the sixth and Liriano walks the first batter – what do you do? Easy to monday morning QB that decision, but if he has been pitching well and not shown signs of tiring, I let my horse run.

    • If it’s 2-0 I leave him in uless his pitch count has gotten above 90. If it’s 4-2 I probably pull him out but that’s just me. Whatever move Clint makes is the right move even if it turns out bad. He knows those players better then anybody else.

  11. In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti…

  12. Tonight will be perhaps one of the most electrifying atmospheres that baseball has seen in a long time. The new Wild Card system has worked well to influence fan turnout as well as contribute to a season filled with great games and good teams emerging from smaller markets.

The pitching matchup is one that supports an inconsistent pace and, I believe, some room to work with in the run department for both sides of tonight’s “win or go home” game. Having said that, both teams are very tough (as well as having a strong team character respectively) so I think we are looking at a close ball game heading into the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings.

Tonight’s game will go to the Reds because they have the luxury of depth as they head into the playoffs. Mr. Billy Hamilton waiting anxiously on the bench all game getting hyped up for his chance to prove to the world that he is not only the best base stealer of our generation but the best bag-swipper of all time. Yes, tonight Hamilton gets his 14th stolen base in just his 14th big league game and it will happen late just like it has happened in this season before. He steals second, base hit scores him from second on a ball hit just about anywhere in the outfield grass, don’t believe me then keep watching this young man’s career. Then to burn away the Pirates new playoff hopes comes “The Cuban Missile” to throw 100+ mph cheddar past your 3,4,and 5 hitters to push the Reds into the 2013 postseason.

  13. WOW, about 5 hours from the game and I’ve got goosebumps in Phoenix, AZ. And it’s 85 degrees out. What a scene it will be when the team is announced (assuming they will announce the team like they do for opening day) and takes the field!!

I think the NLDS roster (and yes , WE WILL get to St Louis ) is tonight’s roster but add AJ and Morton and remove Snider and Buck.

Will be big for Frankie to set the Reds down in top of 1 so the Bucs can hit in a scoreless game…..

  14. Dusty: “Aroldis, phone’s for you. It’s the Hilton. We have a problem.”

  15. I’m a little nervous, because I was at Frankie’s last start against the Reds.

    But optimistic.

  16. The Pirates inherited the Penguins’ winning mojo when they wore Pens gear back in the spring. The Bucs went on to have a spectacular season, as the Pens wilted terribly against the Bruins.

Fast forward to today. A photo of Pascal Dupuis wearing a Pirates helmet. The mojo has osmosed back in the other direction.

The Bucs will lose tonight. And the Pens will tear up the NHL this season.

  17. Been waiting 20 years for tonight. Can’t believe it’s here.

And this one-game play-in/play-off is the third dumbest idea MLB ever (behind the DH and indoor baseball, only slightly ahead of Astroturf).

    • hey, long time no see, Juniata :)

    • Good to see you here JuniataKid

The nerves are tough, wonder how the club is handling it?

Hopefully, once the first pitch is thrown, its just another game to them.

    • Clearly you are blinded by your situation and the fact that you’re nervous for tonight’s game. Love the new system and be glad that the AL gets to have more than just another team from the AL east in every single year!!! YAY

  18. I’m very nervous and regret eating such a large lunch.

To be honest, I don’t think we’re going to win.

Cueto has destroyed us in the past.

Liriano has not won a game against the Reds today.

I don’t like it how we’re playing conservative and going with Barmes.

The Reds have that shutdown closer.

    My prediction is 7-3 Reds.

    I hope I’m wrong.

    • Go throw up, Dom, you’ll feel better :)

    • I love you, Dom.

“I’m very nervous and regret eating such a large lunch.”

      ^post of the year

    • the game hasn’t started yet, bro.. relax. here’s my answer to you line-by-line.

      1. Cueto’s been injured for the last month+. There’s no guarantee he’ll be all that.

      2. Liriano in a bounce back game (the game after he sucks)… has an ERA of like 0.00.

      3. Barmes will not only play sound defense but he will score a run somehow.. trust me on this!

      4. The shutdown closer will not be any use if the pirates are already up by 3+.

      5. My prediction is 6-5 pirates. And my real prediction is the pirates score a bunch early and carry a 6-3 lead into the 9th and almost blow the game.

      6. You are wrong.

    • That worries me, Dom, since you tend to look on the bright side. :-D

    • Dom, dude, you are the best!

    • “Cueto has destroyed us in the past.”

I appologize if you all have disected this one already. But Rumbunter has a pretty good article on why this statement is deceiving.

Has Cueto dominated the Bucs in the past?

Sure. But the Bucs have also sucked in the past. The Bucs, relatively speaking, do not currently suck.

Marte, Byrd, Morneau, and Martin aren’t exactly Presley, Snider, Mckenry, Jones, and the rest of the future All Stars previously forming lineups.

  19. OK everyone, Mother Theresa has to finish up HER day job (some of us have to work, right Martinez the comedian?), so I gotta get it in gear. Hopefully catch you on the thread here this evening.
    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Boy, it’s tough to even say the words, but this game has to be the Pirates to lose.

That Reds lineup, realistically, ends at Bruce. And three of those first five that can hit are left handed. As long as Liriano limits walks, the odds have to be heavily in his favor.

Three runs wins this game for the Pirates.

    • Lets get thru tonight and see what happens ;-)

      I like our chances

    • I like it. We match up good against them in my opinion. I don’t think they have the starting pitching depth and although Adams has done a really good Craig impression I’m not sure he can do it in the playoffs as well.

I think we match up well against Atlanta as well because they are a homerun hitting team that strike out a lot. We do not give up many homeruns and strike out a lot of hitters.

The Dodgers I do not thing we match up well against.

    • Cardinals fans that posted on the site want the Reds to win becasue they don’t want to play the Pirates!! The Cardinal fans don’t want the Pirates because they are the better team in their eyes too

      • I agree. The Reds are the Cowboys. Good looking on paper but the results are not what you would expect. The Pirates are more like the Seahawks. Not a lot of big names but better results then you would expect.

  23. Still over 4 hours till game time!

  24. I just wished my grad school roommate from 1990 (who is a Reds fan) good luck re: tonight’s game. It seemed like the chivalrous thing to do.

  25. Go Bucs!!!!!

Everyone enjoy the game. I don’t think I will be on tonight as both my hands will be busy covering up my face barely able to see through my fingers as if I was watching the scariest movie ever made. Hopefully starting tonight around 11:30 we can start talking about how we are going to beat those Cardinals.

  26. I think they should wear those red vest unis with black undershirts that they wore back in, what was it, 2007 ?

I actually still have on those hats with the red bills. I’m going to bury it in my backyard if the Pirates win tonight.

  28. I’m just enjoying it while it lasts, and I think it will last beyond tonight . . .

It should be loud at PNC . . . Hope Watson (the kid from Iowa don’t you know) does well.

    Beat ‘em Bucs.

  29. I just finished a simulation of tonight’s game via
RBI Baseball 2 for the original Nintendo.

    Here are the results:

    CIN — 3 ~ 7 ~ 2
    PIT — 5 ~ 9 ~ 0

    Winning Pitcher: Doug Drabek
    Losing Pitcher: Tom Browning

    Cincy Player Stats:
    SB – Barry Larkin (1)
    2B – Chris Sabo (1)
    3B – Barry Larkin (1)
    HR – Paul O’Neill (1)
    RBI – Barry Larkin (2), Paul O’Neill (1)
Errors – Todd Benzinger (1), Tom Browning (1)

    Pittsburgh Player Stats:
    SB – RJ Reynolds (2)
    2B – Andy Van Slyke (1), Bobby Bonilla (1)
HR – Jay Bell (1), Andy Van Slyke (1)
RBI – Bobby Bonilla (1), Andy Van Slyke (1), Jay Bell (3)

    There you have it folks.
Early 1990′s technology has predicted tonight’s outcome.
    Place you wagers accordingly.

  30. Didnt get a chance to post this earlier today, but……………………………………

First playoff game here in 21 years.
We just cant lose to a team, and manager, like Cincinnati, and Dusty Baker.
If we do, the Baseball Gods are extremely stupid.

I see a tight game, and, since it is the playoffs, Disty cant order the beanballs.

    Pirates 3, Reds 2.

    GO BUCS !!!

  31. Ok, listen up. Everyone who has gotten stuck out on that ledge, reach out your hand. We’ll pull you back in. It’s going to be ok. It really is. We’re better than this team. As Clint has said, “We respect everyone. We fear no one.”

Our guys will be just fine tonight. I feel good. Go Bucs!!

Dom, grab a burrito. Your stomach will be just fine. And, if it isn’t, well, at least you’ll be at your house and not mine when it blows.

  32. Starting for the Cleveland Indians tonight will be Danny Salazar.

Danny Salazar pitched against Jameson Taillon about four months ago.

    Good luck, young fella.

    • Tomorrow night…

      • I want to see the Tribe win that one. It would really irk me if my team were dismissed so much this month because of a schedule down the stretch that we did not set up. All the Indians have done is smother the teams they have played. They are not squeaking out wins. They are destroying teams. I know they are weak teams, but who would be beating those teams more than Cleveland has? They faced a tougher schedule early on than the other WC contenders. I think they have a ton of motivation right now. I hope once we win tonight, the Tribe wins tomorrow.

  33. Best way to approach tonight’s game is…

The Reds have to play *_us._*

    Go Bucs!

  34. Well, gotta go, buddies, and umpire or ref or whatever officials are called at a cross country meet (match ?). In short, I’ve got to watch kids run around a golf course and make sure they don’t take shortcuts or hail a cab or something. Probably won’t check in during the game. Too nervous, quite frankly. I’ll be pacing as the game goes on and driving my wife, who will be watching New Girl or something on Bravo downstairs, nuts.

Wish all of you well. Have a blast to those going to the game. Try to flag down Dejan and ask him how many wins the Jets will have this year.

Go Bucs. See you all on the other side.

  35. I had to get out of the office early today. My apologies to my fellow employees if it was not the Blackhawks’ first game of the year that had me on edge. I just had to get out of there.

On the way home, I was listening to Casey Stern and Jim Bowden on MLB Radio, as I usually do. Bowden has been known to drive me nuts, although I am generally ok with him. He has been fair to our Bucs this year. He actually got his start, I believe, working for the Bucs.

Anyway, he predicted the atmosphere would be awesome tonight and that the Bucs would advance. He predicted a bit start from Frankie, and a huge night from Cutch. Ok, so far so good. But, he had to follow-up with “St. Louis will be a heavy favorite vs. either of these two teams.” Heavy favorite vs.the Bucs, Jim? They beat us by a whopping 3 games over 162. We won the head-to-head 10-9. His rationale was that their pitching staff was much deeper and stronger. Now, if he had said it was because St. Louis hit so much better and scored so many more runs I could accept that. But, their pitching staff is so much deeper than the team which just set a record for most pitchers having a sub-3.60 ERA or something like that in MLB history? The Cards have a fine staff, and it may be the equal of ours. But, much deeper and better? This guy was a GM for Cincinnati and Washington. This is as deep as his knowledge goes? Ugh! Well, I guess he’s entitled to his opinion.

  36. Thanks for both lineups, DK!

  37. I’ll be watching tonight’s game on MLB-TV at 0100 local time in the UK. But I would rather listen to the Pirates’ radio annoucers than TBS, as the game is played.

Can anyone on here tell me a web site where I can listen to Pittsburgh radio station audio?

    Many thanks.

  39. My Friends in Madness,

I’ve been in meetings since 7:30 AM this morn, and have another meeting until 8:15 tonight. Blah!!!

However, I wanted to check in to say that “Today has been the best of times and it is the worst of times!”

This pain and fear for tonight is killing me!! Isn’t it grand!?!?

I HATE the 1-game playoff but I love the Pirates, and I hope to end my meeting soon enough to hear every pitch!

What a wonderful, terrible, lovely, ugly thing the post-season is!! Come on, Buccos!

  40. I plan to celebrate after Frankie’s first pitch with a Killions Red Irish Ale. No matter the outcome tonight, this year was super.

I like our chances against the toothpick tonight: 6-1 BUCS.

Hope were celebrating tomorrow. If so, the Red Birds are merely a bump in the road.

  41. Dusty said he is starting Ludwick over Hamilton because of …. we all know what comes next. Yes, because of the “experience” factor. Honestly, all Hamilton brings is speed, and I’m not sure what Ludwick brings besides experience. He has power some years.

But, my follow-up question to Dusty would have been, “So, why did you insist on getting him more at bats tonight than Votto and Bruce?”

  42. I believe that in these big games, the more aggressive team almost always wins. I hope the Bucs are ready to go after Cueto, and that our fans are ready to be aggressive (not ugly) as well.

    Feeling Wild about tonight!

    • The fans will set the tone. Of that, I have no doubt. Some of the most fun, most energizing moments I have ever had at a pro game (and I have been to thousands) have occurred in the 4 games I have come in from out of town to watch the Bucs at PNC this year. They will do their part.

  43. Alright, I’m doin my part here in South Central KY. I have my Raise the Jolly Roger shirt on, even though only my wife and I are home to watch. Everyone else is at work.

I’ll have to wear out the keypad on my phone texting updates.

Bring it home, all of you who are there. AW in SRO, 21, LAD and the rest of yunz. Zero defects tonight.

  44. Heading to find an adult beverage or two on the North Shore and then to the game. It is a zoo down here. So nervous I can’t take it. Will try to check in from the game but with a 3G phone not likely, so Lunatics, lets BRING IT HOME. LETS DO IT!

LETS GO BUCS! (and as a public service announcement, dont feed the trolls. They will be out in force if we even go down a run). :)

  45. Should have a line on the # of posts tonight. Break 1,000?

    • and the number of posters! Can’t all be at the game or in a bar.

    • My post season predictions
      Reds over pirates
      Rays over Cleveland
      Reds over cardinals
      Dodgers over Atlanta
      Oakland over tigers
      Rays over red Sox
      Reds over Dodgers
      Oakland over rays
      Oakland over reds in ws

  46. I love continuing to read about how everyone is planning on taking in the festivities tonight. Unfortunately, we can’t all be there in person.

  47. Wow, the DK blog world is especially overly active with Lunnies today. Something going on tonight I should know about? :-)

  48. I mean 8pm EST. I was using my PST

  49. I keep seeing pitchers on-line of all the fans on the Clemente Bridge, adorned in black, journalists calling the atmosphere unbelievable and we still have two hours to first pitch.

Truly a special evening about to unfold, Bucco Fever has reached FEVER PITCH!

  50. Can someone tell me what radio station will be broadcasting the game tonight? Just give me the call letters, please.

  51. Going to be watching the game down here in Dallas-Ft Worth with myrrh end who is a Reds fan….can’t wait!!

  52. My husband says he likes his women like he likes his coffee… Black and a little bitter. I am both. I am dressed just right for the party.

    GO BUCS!

  53. Our group’s original thought was to go on seniority as to who got the tickets tonight but then we regained our senses. Those who had never seen a playoff game went to the top of the list. So that puts me in front of the TV and I feel really good about that. And besides, I can wait til the weekend.

    • So, you split a season ticket package with friends, Milo? Very classy way to settle it tonight.

    • Great attitude, Milo!

    • I remember getting out of school early for Game 3 of the ’79 series vs. Cincy. My dad picked me and my cousin up, and we drove to my cousin’s house to get his dad. We all went to the game together, and watched one of the all-time great Buccos teams rout the Reds that afternoon. I want to say Bert Be-Home-Bly-Eleven pitched that afternoon.

      • Haven’t seen a playoff game live since 1970 at TRS. We lost. Al Oliver made a great running catch in left. Bob Robertson played first. It was SRO. Don’t remember much else.

Junior in HS and my buddies and I went knowing we’d have to stand, but it was a brand new park. What the heck.

      • I was there that day, Jim, taking my Dad to his very first Pirates game in Pittsburgh. We had seen others in Cincy and New York over the years, but had never been to Pittsburgh. Dad flew up from Sarasota and I came out from L.A. Seeing that series, he said later, was “the best experience of my life.”

        • Sorry, Jim, I thought you meant the three against Baltimore in the ’79 WS.

          • I did not get to the Series, War. I remember bartering with my dad, and he said he would try to get tickets for either the playoffs or series, but not both. My cousin and I did not want to risk losing out altogether, so we said we wanted tickets vs. Reds.

    • Milo, you are a saint. Your group’s action is a good omen for tonight.

    • Milo,

You truly are a class act!

  54. Let’s go Bucs! I don’t know why, but I have been thinking of Duke’s speech to Rocky (Rocky IV) in the corner after Rocky cuts Drago: “You see? You see? He’s not a machine, he’s a man, he’s a man. You’ve got to knock him out! All your strength, all your power, all your love. Everything you’ve got. Right now!”

  55. For anyone with a case of the nerves this evening, remember what happened at GABP on Saturday when Chuck was looking a bit shaky on the mound and the managerial brain trust went into postseason thinking mode. Mazzaro, Wilson, Watson, Melancon and Morris: Five pitchers, 4 2/3 innings, no runs, no hits, three walks, six Ks. No doubt about it.

Pittsburgh IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Morton 4.1 5 3 3 5 3 0 3.26
    Mazzaro 0.2 0 0 0 0 1 0 2.81
    Wilson, J 1.0 0 0 0 2 1 0 2.08
    Watson 1.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 2.39
    Melancon 1.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1.39
    Morris, B 1.0 0 0 0 1 2 0 3.46

    Totals 9.0 5 3 3 8 9 0 3.27

  56. I heard tonight that both teams were warned before the 1st game last weekend in Cincinnati. I would assume the same would happen tonight. Sheriff Joe West.

  57. My Aunt and Uncle are at the game. They’ve had season tickets since the early 70′s. I just got a text from her that read, “Words can’t describe how crazy it is down here. 1979-esque”.

    Hope everyone has fun tonight.

Lets Go Bucs! Lets Go Bucs! Lets Go Bucs! Lets Go Bucs! Lets Go Bucs!

  58. My last in person post season game was game 4 of the 1979 World Series.

Tekulve blew that game, but I’ve forgiven him.

I never have been to a NLCS game, or division game, obviously. If they win tonight, I’ll make Sunday’s game with my youngest son, if he can leave fantasy football alone for one frigging Sunday.

I’m so, so so nervous. I want a win over the frigging Reds in the worst way. We have loads of payback due to them, and I’d like to see a downpayment tonight.

  59. The KDKA feed is silent thus far on the MLB site, so I am dealing with the Cincy pregame guys.

  60. Cutting out now. Good luck, Bucs! Enjoy this win tonight, everyone!

  61. Anybody know who is singing the anthem? It’s not on Fox so we know it won’t be an American Idol reject.

  62. Hurdle on his pre-game show said “Grilli is the closer (tonight).”

  63. 10 minutes to go.

  64. I wish we got the player introductions live. Instead these TBS bozos are talking about themselves and Pedro is being incomprehensible.

  65. I don’t know about you, but I’m about done with all the pre-game hype!

  66. R. Martin getting some love on the TBS preamp. Most of the panel picking Bucs.

    Killions iced let’s GO!

  67. Wow. What a moment for the ages! Too bad television drowns out the crowd. It just looks insane.

  68. Sure it’s been a long time for the Pirates, but as fans, we Pittsburghers are well trained. we know how to do this.

  69. Ernie Johnson on the National broadcast opens- “Man alive, what a scene”

    Welcome to Buctober!

  70. Hi Everyone! THE TIME HAS ARRIVED! PLAYOFF BASEBALL IN PITTSBURGH, PA! Can you believe it? Let’s Go Bucs!

  72. Play Ball!

  73. C’mon Frankie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. Not a bad start for Liriano

  75. STFD Choo!

  76. STFD Choo!!! What a start!

  77. Frankie looking AbsoBucnlutely sick !!!!

  78. PNC in a Frenzy!

  79. 3 up and 3 down. Just what the doctor ordered!

  80. 1.2.3.

  81. Now is the time for Bucco Bats to be HOT!

  82. A magnificent nine pitch inning from Frankie who quickly gets team in dugout. Time to break out the bats.

  83. Liriano looks filthy.

If you can call a pitcher filthy after seeing only 9 pitches.

  84. I think an early lead is crucial. Like Darling or Ripken said, all the pressure is on the Reds. Dusty doesn’t handle pressure well. If they get behind, I suspect they will crumble.

  85. good D on that one…

  86. I wish Clint would let Marte BAT

  87. Just checking in everyone.

    Happy Buctober.

    Final score: 2-1 Pirates.

  88. Crowd is just dripping with intensity…waiting for something great to happen…lets go bucs…..

Ernie Johnson is an awful play by play announcer…. #FREENEVERETT

  89. Cutch makin Cueto work…good!

  90. love the pitchtrax graphics… west looks pretty decent so far behind the plate..

  91. Cutch needs to line back through the mound, ala Clemente, after Gibson gave him some chin music. Gibson got his leg broken for sitting Clemente down with that high and tight pitch.

  92. I may just have to go watch this!

  93. This is why we got you, Justin. This moment. Right here.

  94. Hate to sound like a super homer, but Joe West has a terrible strike zone tonight.

  95. Well, we did more than they did….but still…

  96. if this were a fight between the starting pitchers, round 1 scored to Liriano…looked much sharper than cueto.

  97. Scoreless after one in the history books.

  98. STFD Phillips!

  99. I prefer Samantha Ponder to Graig Sager.

  100. oh god, now craig sager joins the telecast mess that is TBS… may have to turn the sound off at some point, just dont want to miss the crowd noise…..

    • idea / request for sports broadcasters…offer an ‘announcer mute’ option… keep the crowd noise but dump the announcers… would work for Monday Night Football too…

  101. I worry about Frazier & Cozart. Bruce is 0 for 11 against Liriano. Make that 0 for 12.

  102. Yowsah! Nice K!

  103. Liriano is money right now. Still early of course, but if he continues to keep the ball down, its going to be a long night for the Reds.

  104. Papa Francisco dealing strikes. Muy Bueno!

  105. YES! 3 up and 3 down :)

  106. Frankie looking Berry Berry Gooood! :)

  107. Check out all the boats on the river. Love it.

  108. Six up, six down…let’s get Frankie a lead to work with.

  109. FRANKIE’s on his game tonight…. TIME FOR THE BUCS TO JUMP AHEAD… let’s have a Byrd single followed by a PEDRO CANNON BALL!!!!

  110. I’m not looking at all the previous posts, but I hope nobody is complaining about Barmes starting.

Showing twice now why that is the case.

  111. More fun than a barrel of monkeys!

  113. wahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

  115. Byrd is the word!!!!

  116. Byrd Man OWNS Cueto!!!!

  117. Byrd is the word, the trade that keeps paying dividends, 1-0 Buccos!

  118. woop woop!!!!

  119. Does Cueto normally pitch up in the zone? If not, he is off tonight, he has been up most of the night so far.

  120. First postseason homer in PNC history and it belongs to a member of the PITTSBURGH BASEBALL CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  121. nice try Petey lol

  122. Shot of Baker looking like “Lizard” Lick Towing ! ;)

  123. Another Homer!!!

  124. martin with an encore :)

  125. Another BLAST!!!!!! 2-0 good guys!!!!!!!!

    MARTIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. WATCHING!!!!! MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  128. Somebody’s rattled.

  129. Bucs squaring up Cueto early, Martin goes hard as PNC rings out C U E T O, Homefield advantage in full force, 2-0 Buccos!!!

  130. Cueto getting hammered!!!! Crowd is in his head with Cuet-o chants. A MLB pitcher completely rattled.

  131. Owwwwwwwwwwwwwww Baby!!!

  132. Are we having fun yet?!

  133. God, PNC is loud and proud right now!

  134. Think the fans got under Johnny s skin

  135. Fans getting under Cueto’s skin and he’s off his game. Awesome atmosphere – everything I was hoping from the fans.

  136. PNC is bonkers and it clearly is getting to Johnny.

  137. I usually don’t think The 12th Man thingee works.

What the Thunder do EYE know?

  138. Francisco with a base hit!

  139. How sweet it is!!! Pour it on Buccos. And how about Papa Francisco’s bat!!

  140. CUETO!!!

    Fans are getting to him.

You don’t see this atmosphere anywhere in baseball.

  141. Effing Dusty Baker. Liriano’s single was for you.

  142. Dusty better call Macy’s and get Leake over to the bullpen.

  143. Marte check swings and gets a single :) WOOP!!!

  144. Yo Dusty…you look a bit confused….

  145. I am actually sitting in my living room saying Cueto! Cueto!

  146. oh, for a dagger by Pittsburgh Neil right about now….

  147. great catch

  148. dang, nice catch by Frazier…

  149. Tony Sanchez catch all over again…wow…

  150. Think Dustball regrets starting Cueto?
He is clearly spooked by the rabid Pittsburgh crowd!

    • Even Darling is shocked. You just don’t see veteran MLB pitchers rattled by a crowd that often. This game has already produced an enduring memory.

  151. Nice catch for Frazier. Hopefully it won’t give the reds momentum.

  152. what an atmosphere at PNC… have goosebumps 1800 miles away

  153. Honest to Pirate Pete. When Byrd came up, I texted my son: B2B HRs.

    I was wrong.

  154. Quite the grab by Frazier to get Reds out of inning. Time for Frankie to fire another zero to not allow any momentum swing and get middle of lineup right back at rattled Cueto.

  155. Have to give it up to a tremendous catch to end the inning.

  156. Tip your hat to Frazier. Nice catch.

    Now suck it Frazier.

  158. Have I mentioned lately I hate Dustball and the Reds ?

Ok, I just mentioned it. :)

  159. All these Reds groundballs are a very, very good sign.

  160. 9 up 9 down for Francisco :)

  161. No fooling.

In honor of the playoff game, I had an appointment with a sports medicine doctor who shot me up with steroids. Really.

Nothing serious, BTW. Just dealing with the pain of a former runner.

But Thunder Rage is coursing through me.

  162. On Pirates pregame Greg Beown asked Cutch so what do you think with Liriano on the mound, his response I better find a comfortable lawn chair.

Through three the entire Pirates OF has been in lawn chairs as Frankie serves up another 1-2-3 inning.

    go Bucs!

  163. just got a text from a buddy who said the pirates just had a “ZZ TOP inning”. Double Z’s. LOL! Great line.

  164. 28 pitches for Liriano through 3 innings. 37 pitches for Cueto through 2. Good signs for Buccos.

  165. Cutch earns a base!

  166. Cueto doesn’t know whether to wipe his watch or wind his butt!

  167. Darling said he could count on his hand the number of times he has seen a manager go over to a pitcher and talk to him between innings.

  168. man…did justin want that one…

  169. Blackhawks lead the Caps 1-0 in first period.

    I’m being humorous here. lol

  170. Byrd!
Man, he hits that ball really, really hard!

  172. fans 1 – dusty 0

  173. Dusty: “Hit the next guy up”

  174. Byrd rips one and Bucs back in business with runners on corners, come on EL Toro RBI time.

    Reds pen already up.

  175. STFD Crusty

  176. How amazing would a homer be

  177. No way was that an error.

  178. Pedro gets it done. He’s been looking good at the plate lately.

  179. I’ll take an RBI

  180. Pedro does his job, Sac fly and it’s 3-0 good guys.

  181. man, do i wish i was there tonight. of all the games i have been to at pnc park…this is one i would love to be at.

  182. Way to go, Pedro!!

  183. Remember when posters were concerned about the Pirates inability to get sac. flies ? Seems like a million years ago.

  184. This is amazing…..

  185. Crowd needs to chant COZART next,

  186. i AM STARTING A D U S T Y!!!! D U S T Y!!!! CHANT

  187. PNC Park is e-l-e-c-t-r-i-c 2-Nite.

  188. Oh well…Bucs 3, Reds 0 after 3 :)

  189. .I just to my wife….the “blackout” at pnc park looks really cool. all those black shirts look intense.

  190. I like to see them adding on. So far, everything is proceeding according to my evil plan…..

  191. Well, I’ve got to get my kids bathed and put to bed, so will have to DVR the rest of this. Seems like a team of destiny. Have fun you crazies….

    I knew I shouldn’t had kids.

  192. This is why the series this past weekend was so important. Home crowd having a definite impact on this game.

  193. Guessing our leader is at the yard? Dejan?

  194. Choo hit by pitch, shocking isn’t it?

  195. Not on purpose. Bad timing there.

  196. wouldnt surprise me if cueto is done for the night… i know i’d pull him if i were managing.

ernie johnson is the worst play by play announcer doing baseball i have EVER heard in my life. just awful in every respect. this is the best MLB / TBS can do????

  197. Bring out the “Hoover”. Need a double play quickly!

  198. Votto completely lost up there.

    Need a DP.

  199. Oh yes, a nice timely K!

  200. VOTTO looks L-O-S-T. good K to get there for Frankie… now a DP from the jackass and back in the dugout!!!

  201. Marting with an incredible save on a 55 foot slider.. Ernie’s call: “that was inside”.

  202. Brandon swinging for a HR…keep it low and you can turn 2 or strike him out

  203. Great stop by Martin and a popup for two outs. Get out of it with no runs, Francisco.

  205. ok 2 outs…one more…

  206. I hate Jay Bruce.

  207. Reds on the board. :(

  208. Nice hitting by Bruce.

  209. If our 3B had any range that would’ve been an out!

  210. Crap.

    Good piece of hitting though.

  211. wow, adjustment made by Bruce..he actually hits it the OTHER WAY…for a single, RBI. shocked.

  212. Let’s get that one back in the home half!

  213. Key AB right here.

  214. Atta boy, Frankie… keep adding on OFFENSE!!!!!

  215. Loud strike, nothing more. Still a 2 run lead. Let’s get some more in the bottom half.

  216. Outstanding pitch….and block by Martin.

That’s how ya do it kids.

  217. Okay, out of the inning with limited damage. Let’s get that run back fellas!

  218. and that’s it on the sound for me, Ernie Johnson makes Tim Neverett sound like Red Barber for God sakes… his call on that foul HR was abysmal. I can’t take it anymore.

  219. Absolutely huge K of Frazier as Liriano limits damage to just one. Bats just need to keep chipping away on Cueto who does not have his “A” stuff.

  220. Minimal damage…now get some more runs, Bucs!

  221. Just another game, huh?
I dont see what all the excitement is about……………….. ;) ;)

  222. Wow. Wow. What fun. I am a nervios wreck.

  223. What a puss on Crusty Dusty!

  224. Dusty is such a BSer…

  225. Johnny coming up on 60 pitches

  226. Crushed.

I’d say Martes timing is OK

  227. GO FANS! Keep it up!

  228. Stick a fork in Cueto, he is well done…..

  229. Johnny be not so good, today

  230. Bye Bye Cueto!

Now, get the toothpick outta there!

  231. Johnny be gone!

  232. And the Marte Parte gets Cueto removed from the game very early and the Bucs will have ample opportunity off Reds pen tonight.

  233. wonder how many scouts the cardinals sent in for this game?

  234. Adios Cueto. A las duchas antes de tiempo.

  235. Just joining in finally. Awesome game so far with the 2 shots by the Bucs and the added run last inning. I’m loving the serenade by the crowd for each Reds pitcher and batter at times. Get some more runs Bucs!

  236. Craig Sager and Pittsburgh are like oil and water.

  237. Loving the #Blackout too!

  238. Clutch! Keep pouring it on!

  239. 5 more feet Neil !!!!!!!!!!!

    4-0 Good Guys !!!!

  240. And Walker gets a RH double. The stars are aligned.

  241. I thought he got all of it. Just missed

    Great AB

  242. The Pittsburgh kid comes thru!!

  243. The Pittsburgh kid with his first ever hit off Marshall and gets Bucs run right back, 4-1 Buccos!

  244. PRNW almost had the third shot of the night, but at least it was a run scoring double. Come on Cutch!! M-V-P! Their scared of yeah.

  245. Nice stat: 69-17 when the Bucs score 4 or more.

  246. WALKER doubles in Marte from the right side. Did just type that?

  247. I’m surprised Baker is walking mccutchen. Usually he calls for his pitchers to throw at his head if he wants him on.

  248. Good at bat for morneau

  249. Apparently, pitchers are now Marines to Ernie.

  250. Twenty plus years..we did not lose the love!

  251. Marshall up to 20 pitches already.

  252. Morneau with the Walk!

  253. Professional baseball hitting by Justin Morneau.

  254. Morneau draws a walk to load the bases…… Another pitcher to get a hot shower…..

  255. Dustball looks like he needs a hug.

    I volunteer to bean him…………

  256. Dusty is getting a lot of exercise tonight.

  257. Great AB by Justin! Bases juiced, now bring them home Byrdman!

  258. What a great AB by Morneau who shows solid pitch recognition and does not swing at Marshall’s stuff off plate.

Chance to blow game wide open here.

  259. Hi everyone. I am in my hotel watching this absobucnlutely fantabulous game.

  260. Hoping for another word from the Byrd. Speak to us my man!

  261. blow this thing wide open marlon!

  262. Salami anyone

  263. 5-1 now as Phillips chokes!

  264. Thank you very much Brandon.

  265. P H I L L I P S!

  266. Brandon Phillips can’t handle the pressure either.

    I hate Brandon Phillips.

  267. That’ll work.

Not a fan of Phillips. Choke

  268. I smell something big from Pedro here …

  269. Aww Phillips with the bobble costs the Reds another run as he muffs a would be DP ball, 5-1 Buccos!

  270. Joe Morgan is probably thinking “I coulda had that”. even today!

  271. Pedro is locked in. Just bad luck there.

  273. All you folks at the game. Look up to the press box.

Dejan usually goes all gold for his face paint.

But we need to know if he joined the Black Out.

Yeah, I know. That didn’t work out so well for Ted Danson.

But he played a retired baseball pitcher. So see? This is a baseball post after all.

  274. We oughta do this every season. Don’t you think?

  275. Go Bucs. It’s a great day for Pittsburgh.

  276. Next half inning. Talk about draft picks? Or who to trade for prospects?

  277. Pressure off Frankie now.

Just go after hitters. Let them get themselves out.

  278. ouch!

  279. Must keep that duck for the entire playoffs! Kiss the Duck for luck!

  280. I am just loving this. It has been to long. Wore my Pirate gear in Epcot today and was getting high fives and Go Bucs from so many people.

  281. Cincinnati will be on their fourth pitcher but the Pirates have only used Francisco thus far.

  282. Parros from Montreal and Orr from Toronto get into a fight…Parros trips over Orr and lands face first on the ice…knocking himself out….truth

  283. frankie…frankie…making me a bit nervous…

  284. Joe West is getting worse as the game goes on.

  285. YES! Nicely turned DP….they got your back Frankie!

  286. Pitcher’s best friend gets us into the back half of the game.

  287. That was an absolute rocket Pedro unleashed to 2b.

  288. Liriano makes the pitch and Pedro makes the turn, big inning ending DP as Frankie foils the Reds again.

  289. Huge DP. Liriano pitch count still just at 60. Starting to lose command, but would be great to get another 2 innings out of him.

  290. 5-4-3 double play and the inning is over. Way to hang ZERO on the Frankie!

  291. 40,487 in attendance tonight.

  292. 40,487 at the game tonight. Largest ever!

  293. Rays or Injuns tomorrow guys? I’ll take the Rays

  294. barmes with a hit :)

  295. Barnes with the knock!

  296. Liriano is a great bunting pitcher.
All the more amazing because he came from the AL.

  297. Marte gives it his best shot…and it’s a b it short lol

  298. Nice play. STFD CHoo

  299. Evening, Gang! Woo-Hoo! I know we’re never REALLY feeling comfortable, but a lot to like about this start! Frankie seems to be GRINDING … and that’s good, too!

  300. Pittsburgh looks amazing in October. Especially when the Bucs are still playing.

    I miss my hometown.

    A lot.

  301. does frankie pitch the whole game?
