  3. THIS IS A DREAM !!!!!!!!!

    DK: DARYL!

  4. Leaving work early the next two days to watch. LETS GO BUCS.

  5. There is a game today? I can’t believe this is the first I’m hearing about it. October baseball just doesn’t feel right.

If feels like we waited 21 years for this.

  6. of the last 35 times the road team can earn a split in the first two games, said road team has won 24 of those series.

  7. Keys for AJ today:

    1. Keep Matt Adams in the park
    2. Keep Jon Jay and Descalso off the bases

Obviously there are many other keys, but this lineup gets pretty weak after Molina , but Jay and Descalso have been tough on us, key is to not let up and let those guys extend things….. and Adams has been unreal with his power since subbing in for Craig… let’s keep him on the ground.

  8. Look for Martin to catch from here on out. Hurdle was asked why Buck was chosen to be on the roster over Sanchez and he basically said it was due to experience but it didn’t make much of a difference as the backup would not be obtaining much playing time.

  9. Stolen from the morning java thread:

Nobody has said anything about Matt Adams yet. We haven’t seen him right? And by that I mean, he hasn’t seen pirate pitching.

The only I’ve seen so far is that Allen Craig being out for the series is a positive. I also see a story floating around on MLB about Matt Adams, a PA resident and pirates fan about playing against his childhood favorite team.

Anyone else have any input on him? Could he possibly be an x-factor?

  10. My quick takes today:

    1) Make Wainwright work. I know he’s a bull, and they will leave him in for 120 if need be. But, if we could get one of those games where’s he at 90 after 5, even if we are not yet winning at that point, I like our chances. Plus, the more times you can get deep into an opponent’s bullpen in a series, the better.

    2) Can we find a way to not have John Jay kill us in that park?

    3) I would love to see Pedro swapped for Justin today. That said, please bring some power finally, Justin.

    4) AJ needs to be efficient with his pitches. Give us 7 innings w/ 2 runs, AJ!

  11. I know this is different but, the current 14 Pirates position players have a combined .302 career batting average against Adam Wainwright and an 846 OPS.

  12. Thanks, again, for posting both lineups, DK.

The Window will continue throughout the duration of the playoffs.
September and October will be combined and all winners will be announced at the conclusion of the playoffs.

Makes my job a helluva lot easier when I don’t have to hunt to find everyone’s “wagers”

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line (EXCEPT FOR TODAY’S BONUS PICK ‘EM).
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

    Line #1
Total INNINGS PITCHED by AJ Burnett in tonight’s game
    Line is 6.75

    Line #2
How Many Wins Will the Pirates Get in Games 1 & 2?
    Zero (DOUBLE ODDS)
    One (EVEN ODDS)

    GOOD LUCK!!!

Anything is possible if a person believes

  14. I have a sign on my office wall from one of my favorite baseball players of all time – Christy Mathewson. The sign reads – “You can learn little from victory, you can learn everything from defeat”. As we enter this NLDS…I think of this Pirates team and the past 2 years and maybe what they have indeed learned.
______________________________________________________________________As a side note – Christy holds one of the most unbreakable records in the history of the game for the 1905 NY Giants – 3 complete game shutouts for the Giants over the Philly A’s in the World Series.

  15. I just found out that the family is going to a Chinese restaurant for dinner at 6 pm. Can you tell that I am the only one that likes baseball? And no, there is no TV at the restaurant.

  16. well pulling in the driveway. Gotta take care of the dog n stufff. Catch yinz Loonies later. Go Bucs!

  17. with new folks here… maybe someone should post avatar instructions

I hate being a grey man

  18. Didn’t take Dale Sveum long to find a Job!! Hired to Royals staff today.

  19. I am still on a high from beating the Reds. I hope that really hurt Dusty Baker!! Lol. Now I hope we can quiet all the Cardinal fans here in Southern Indiana!!

  20. Oh-h-h-h, Man!

I thought I was over this sickness, this nervousness, this tightness in my stomach after Tuesday. Now it starts up all over again tonight!

I feel like I am going to throw up! Why do I do this to myself? Isn’t it grand!!!??!!

    Go Bucs!

  21. The Pirates will win in 3! That’s right, get the brooms out.

  22. Pedro Martinez doesn’t like the Pirates lineup. Things Martin and Alvarez should be higher up in the lineup.

  23. I, for one, am glad tomorrow’s game is on MLB Network. TBS is awful. I’ll never get back the last 20 minutes I wasted watching their studio roundtable.

    • None of the “experts” on the TBS pregame panel picked the Bucs to win the series. That is a good sign.

      • Everyone is discounting the Buccos….they forget that the Buccos have been playing playoff type baseball for the last two weeks and the Cards have been out of that mode for the last seven days…

    • Alas, the international feed, at least to England, is on TBS. No way I can mix ‘n match the TV feed with KDKA audio. No way I’ve discovered yet.

  24. Strap in. I have to go to ESL tonight by 6, so youns will have to carry my angst for me.

I know it’s a lot, so spread it out amongst yourselves.

  25. Dick Stockton ladies & gentlemen.

    • Do you remember when he was the Sports Anchor at KDKA? Sigh

Where is Bill Curry when you need him?

      • I do. He was there when Three Rivers opened. Sweet Old Bill replaced him.

        • Stockton is 1000000000000000000 times better than Ernie Johnson who should never be allowed to call a baseball game again, much less the playoffs. Not when Bob Costas is available. And Brenley is very good. Much prefer a 2man crew…the other night, Smoltz and Ripken talked over each other too much plus they sounded too much alike so it was just an audial mess.

    • Dick Stockton left Pittsburgh in early 1971 because he wanted to do baseball & the great Bob Prince was firmly entrenched here. Stockton still does an excellent job, 42 years later!

  26. Dick Stockton and Bob Brenly with the call

85 freakin degrees with a chance of thunderstorms.

Ugh….already talking about the shadows. Kill me now.

  27. The last time the Bucs played in a best of 5 series, they won 3-0.
    Just sayin’

  28. Stands full of red. Outfield bathed in sunshine with arch shadows crossing the infield.

Pirates in black shirts, yellow lettering and numbers, grey pants with yellow and black stripes down the side. Names on back with “P” on hats.

Cardinals in their familiar home whites. Cardinals at each end of the bat across the chest. Red lettering and numbers. Names on back and interlocking StL on hats.

Pirates go down in order to lead off the first.

  29. I don’t do predictions. But I do think the home team is going to win the first 4 games.

  30. Working the count. It’s the Cardinal way.

  31. So far Pirates batters not displaying good pitch recognition, making it far easier for Wainwright.

  32. Jarvis Jones – more endorsements than sacks.

  33. Hello all.

Excited for today’s game (not the start time, luckily I’m off work this week) but I do think, that if the Pirates can pull this win off against Wainwright, they will sweep.

No disrespect to Molina, but I really don’t want to hear how he’s the best catcher in the league after RMs performance the other night. Show some love Stockton.

My Pirates pick-to-click for tonight is Marte. Too young and dumb to realize how big of a game this is. He’ll make something happen tonight.

  34. Clint shouldn’t have missed that one.

  35. The sun is just brutal right now.

  36. John Jay a Buc killer, hits a soft floater and gets a single. First real test of game here for AJ, first two runners aboard.

  37. Big play by NW.

As I was about to say…roll a pair.

  38. Very nice play by Walker going to his left spinning and getting runner at second, gives AJ the opportunity to induce DP which he does and Bucs get out of it. Big half inning there, circle that one.

  39. Barmes over 1.000 OPS vs. Wainwright. Clearly in there for his bat.

    • And he does come up with sharpest hit ball of anyone, first time through the order…he was robbed of extra bases by Freese.

      • Unfortunately, that counts for squat.

He couldn’t field too well either. Another ofer in a career filled with them.

        • I repeat: Barmes didn’t make the only error of this horrid game. Motrneau should have had hit mitt on at least one grounder that went by him…the same for Walker. Cutch wasn’t too spiffy out there, either.
This team wins and loses AS A TEAM. You can pick on Barmes all you want, nothing changes that.

  40. Except for the base hit by Molina, all ground balls by the Cardinals so far. Nice play by Barmes to get out of the jam.

  41. atta boy AJ, get Descalso to serve up an easy DP… Cards once again had RISP, Yady gets a gift single (Barmes error) and Jay bloops weakly to center field… but nice composure by AJ

Wainright looks tough today, gonna have to keep these Birds off the scoreboard

  42. Big play by freese to keep us hitless.

  43. Freeze a great play to rob Barmes of a double. yes, Brenley you will notice the ump signaled fair before he called out, so it was indeed going to be a double.

  44. Don Larsen – 1956
    Roy Halladay – 2010

    That’s it. That’s the list.

  45. Nine up nine down for the Pirates, Wainwright looks tough today, important for AJ to match him tit for tat and keep firing zeroes.

  46. Gonna stay that way too.

  47. Got to do better against curve ball, or this could be a Wainwright complete game.

  48. I really think TBS should just go primetime for weekday playoff games… for the NCAA tournament they find a way to telecast up to 4 games at once, allowing viewers to choose which one they want to watch.

Why not start Dodgers- Braves at 7pm edt on TBS, then start Pirates-Cards at 8:30pm edt on TNT… gives viewers option of back and forth…also if first game is a blowout, people are fed to the other game, and vice versa.

Tomorrow, with 4 series all going, you can have doubleheaders on both TBS and TNT (6 and 9 edt)

  49. Not good.

    Roll it

    • Try that again.

But I don’t like where this is going.

      Heart of the order.

      You’re welcome Stockton

  50. Need a hoover quick

  51. ugh, 8 pitch walk to Wainwright to lead off Cards half of third. AJ really having to battle on mound.

  52. And second straight inning Cards get first two runners on base, but this time heart of St Louis order coming up.

  53. Too many base runners vs. no base runners is not a good combination.

  54. hate to say it, but that’s quite likely the ballgame. 6 innings to prove me wrong!

  55. Holy Crap!
    That was hit a mile.

    0-3 Bad Guys.

  56. And all at once we said “$h!t”

  57. And Beltran delivers first big blow of the series….AJ falling behind too many hitters, can’t do that against a very good hitting team.

  58. That home run hurt. Time to get those back.

  59. Typical AJ in the post season–el stinko

  60. Anybody warming up yet?

  61. get jeanmar up and quick

  62. AJ does not have it, came in with a 13.50 ERA at Busch and the place continues to haunt him. Time to get Gomez up.

  63. to throw holliday a fastball mid thigh and out over the plate is flat out awful. AJ doesnt have any type of curveball today and pretty poor command overall.

  64. Question now is how many runs they will let him give up? 6 is my guess.

  65. Not sure who is on the mound, is that AJ Burnett or Kip Wells?

    Sucks, I can’t tell.

  66. 2-0 looks a lot more managable than 3-0.

Walk to the pitcher? No good

  67. Good to be here with my peeps. Got terrible news…my aunt is dying of cancer. Hockey, baseball, blog = needed diversion.

  68. Why is AJ still out there – I love the guy – great attitude and we would not be playing tonight if it weren’t for him – but he does not have his usual stuff…

    Bring on Gomez.

AJ does not deserve to be embarrassed this way…

  69. Phone lines must be down.

  70. “No activity, as of yet in Pittsburgh bullpen” — make that 8 runs?

  71. Wow. Yank him.

  72. We’ll get them tomorrow.

  73. This game is over….

  74. Oh my, why can CH not see AJ has no command, is not fooling anybody? This is about to get out of hand in a hurry.

  75. vintage Hurdle!

  76. Outings like this one are exactly why the Yankees couldn’t wait to offload this guy.
Look at his lifetime stats in the post-season.
    Not pretty at all.

    ERA over 5

  77. 3 runs on Wainwright? Doubtful, but you never know.

  78. Bob Brenley…….. “in the playoffs, you have to go to the pen quicker”

  79. Where’s Joe West when you need him?

  80. With all the stuff we have seen about the data geeks – why has some of it not been applied to this sort of thing…

AJ has not fooled anyone – has been throwing way more balls than he usually does…

This is embarassing at this point – and I blame Hurdle…

  81. Please get him out of there.

  82. wow, AJ just looks awful. no command whatsoever. just awful.

  83. Its OK Hurdle, he has only let the first 7 on this inning. My God.

  84. How is he still in there?

  85. This sucks…game already over by the third inning…this team is done…

  86. Whatever Clint is thinking, it is wrong — even if he gets out with just 4

  87. How is it possible this blog can all see after the Beltran AB and the Holliday AB and most certainly after the Adams AB where he was hit that AJ is toast yet no one in the Pirate dugout can see this?

    • Some of us have been seeing it all year; some of you are just now catching on.

His decisions and thought processes are muddled.

Then there’s that weak armed SS, who can’t complete a ROUTINE DP

  88. Thank you AJ.
You’ve managed to summon your inner Jonathan Sanchez at the worst possible time.
Better hope this series doesn’t go 5 games.

  89. well, let AJ pitch now. let him pitch to 100 pitches. no use using up the pen.

  90. Now you can wrap it up. Sloppy sloppy….

  91. Getting our asses kicked…

  92. If I’m Hurdle, AJ stays out there for 6 innings, no matter what the score is.

  93. Just embarrassing, this team is going to need a lot of mental toughness to shower this stink off.

  94. Come on Clint, one more batter. I know he will figure this out yet.

  95. Peace out lunatics.
I got stuff to do this evening.
    See you all tomorrow.

  96. Unfortunately about four five batters too late.

  97. Being one can never criticize Clint, I just imagined AJ was allowed out there to the tune of 7 runs.

Yeah, thats the ticket, it was a dream.
    Carry On…………..

  98. I hate to think this but why do I believe that a lot of those balls the Cardinels’ hitters were taking would have been a lot of swings & misses for Pirates’ hitters

  99. wow, sorry, hurdle missed big time on this. sorry, no excuses, he screwed up…. AJ just sucked today. Right after Holliday double, Gomez should have been warming up… then after the walk you yank AJ and hope Gomez can get out of it somehow. That said, not sure we get more than 3 off of Wainright today anyway, but now it’s completely out of hand.

    • Isn’t it time for a snarky post how the Pirates won X games and Hurdle lost X games?

Cuz it’s been super entertaining so far.

      • As Brandie said in this morning’s post….time to cut the snark and have some respect for each other.
This team wins and loses AS A TEAM.
        Thank you for your interest.

  100. Might as well put on Brian Williams & the NBC nightly news

  101. Don’t have to worry about using up the battery in the remote tonight.

  102. Two hard hit balls, three walks, a hit batsman, and a bleeder down the line lead to this debacle. Still no one out, and they only have themselves to blame. No control by AJ, and once again no offense. Long game already will be longer at 7-0.

  103. Game over.

Guess we can criticize A.J. Burnett and Clint Hurdle….

    • No.
      Criticism of Hurdle not allowed.

I prefer to think it was a bad dream.
And I am sticking with that.

    • Eric

Unfortunately, you are right. Maybe Wainwright will get out of his groove since he has been in the dugout so long.

    • Some only show up to do that. What’s the point?

      Its obvious

    • Sure you can. Just do us a favor and don’t preface the comments with “Being one can never criticize Clint…”

      • Almost every single time Hurdle is criticized, many come to defend him, even when he clearly makes a mistake. We also see Pirates 90, Hurdle 60, etc.

So in my view, which you NEVER agree with, and always argue with, I feel like any criticism of Hurdle is not allowed. Too many times I have seen the defense enacted to the point of foolishness.

Do us a favor and dont deny this happens on the blog.

        • Here is what happens:
Some people criticize Hurdle and then some come to defend him.

But some people praise Hurdle and some don’t agree with that and criticize him.

So you see (but you don’t seem to want to believe) is that it goes both ways.

          • I never said it doesnt go both ways. Nice try.
            You are reaching as usual.

            • When did you say it goes both ways. I don’t see it.

And you keep saying that criticizing Clint is not allowed.
              And that just isn’t true.

              • Why would I have to say it goes both ways? You are just being contrarian as usual.

I explained to you that I never said it DOESNT go both ways…….. meaning I understand it goes both ways. Why cant you understand that? It is because you just want to argue, as you always do.

If criticizing Clint was allowed, then why do we get Pirates 90, Clint 60…………. Hurdle always gets criticized for no reason, etc.

                Again, nice try.
Really dont understand your need to argue with me, even if I say the sky is blue.
                You, sir need help.

I am not flattered you always come after me.
Actually, I am disturbed with it.

        • Need to turn the sensitivity factor down a bit Plan.

  104. Couldn’t tell if the crowd applauded moving the runner up, or was just pity applause for an out?

  105. Maybe Wainwright will be tired from batting twice in one inning

  106. Well, welcome to the big time boys.

  107. When does the mercy rule kick in?

  108. This team will get swept….

    • Your only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher, I like the Cole vs. Lynn matchup as Cole may have been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball in September.

    • today’s game has no bearing on how Cole will do in game 2 or Liriano will do in game 3 but thanks for your opinion.

    • Just going by what I see…Buccos look intimidated…

      • what channel are you watching that you can see how the team ‘feels’? i dont have that on my DirecTV. I see a piss-poor pitching performance and so far Wainright in command

        • I go by the results….

          • Of one game to determine how intimidated they are?

Move to Vegas, because you’re a magician.

          • right, i see a pirate team playing a bit sloppy in the field, a starting pitcher that got rocked, and Wainright being the ace that he is… but I don’t see the whole team as ‘intimidated’.
            but to each his own

        • +7

        • I brought up the menu on my DirecTV remote and I dont see an option to see how the team feels. I dont even see a feature to say if I like or dislike what I’m seeing either. Must not have one of those no fangeled remotes.

  109. Gomez shows Clint why move needed to be made after Holliday AB….would have had chance to keep it at 3.

  110. AJ had no command. I think after the Beltran bomb of a HR, AJ then tried to just hit the corners and was WAAAAAAAAYYYYY OFF. Can’t afford to walk and hit batters with this lineup. When they smell blood, they put up huge innings. Freeze then did the Cardinal thing and flick the ball down the right field line and game goes from somewhat hopeless 4-0 hole to an embarrassing 7-0 deficit.

I’d be mildly surprised if this offense gets close to 4 runs today against Wainright… but if they do, then this one is on Hurdle. But if not, then my blame is 100% on AJ.

  111. Losing 7-0, what worse can happen now?

    Oh yeah, a no-hitter…

  112. Bloggers and Bloggettes,

This sucks, but we know how to be resolute, both in the face of victory and in the clutches of defeat! We will prevail!

  113. Love seeing all the nay-sayers that are coming out of the woodwork tonight. One game. That’s all this is today, one game. Tomorrow is another day. If I had a nickel for every time I saw this team was done, the collapse has started, so on and so forth, I would be pretty rich.

    • Thank you.

Said much better than I. These idiots show up to bash the manager and/or team after 1 loss and start calling the series already?

Apparently some think runs carry over each game.

    • I hope I am wrong, trust me…

    • Really?

What do you think of fans who both cheer and criticize?
You lumping them into the naysayer category too?

      • Dude really? Reread what he wrote.

        • I did read. I just asked a question, or isnt that allowed?

          • You have to drink the kook-aid Plan…

            • I dont drink kool-aid, or not drink kool-aid.
I cheer when appropriate, and I criticize when appropriate………….. so both sides think I am wrong. Still remember the day on here where I was attacked by both sides……. truly funny stuff.

Just tired of people on both sides trying to tell others what to say or not say. Little sick of that crap.

              • I agree…

              • Don’t hear anyone criticizing you plan.

                Good grief

              • Never said he was criticizing me tonight, Ryan.
Just making observations on what happens on the blog in general.

But thanks for the “good grief”.
                I always liked Charlie Brown…….

              • To each his own…criticize, don’t criticize, or do both. I don’t care because the bigger point is being missed…This is October baseball and the Bucs are playing. I wanted them to win the game because it would have picked up an otherwise sucktastically rotten day. It was not meant to be, apparently, but all of this circular arguing is giving me a headache!

              • Sorry Muppet.
                You are correct.
I will leave, and make it better.

See anyone on the Pens thread.

                GO BUCS, anyway!!!!!!

          • So sensitive plan..

He’s calling out the ones that just show up to bash the team/manager.

We all are critical. Hurdle left AJ in way too long.

            AJ sucked it up.

            • 1) Those who do nothing but bash Hurdle/team === trolls.

              2) By pointing out stuff that has actually happened in the past === sensitive?

              • No.

Sensitive is your repeated mention of how people get butthurt over something you had to say…

Or your insistant whining when someone disagrees with you….

I’ll stop there, I mean no harm.

  114. Matt Adams.

  115. Matt Adams is scary on defense. Maybe he and Mike Adams can switch roles?

  116. How about a ball to the outfield ? Baby steps.

  117. What time do they drop the puck?

  118. no perfect game.

  119. Yay….. won’t be no-hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  120. i think i’d bunt about 12 times in a row at Matt Adams, might as well have fun

  121. Cutch being Cutch

  122. 2bloops and a blast?

  123. Just need to start chipping away at this lead. One run at a time. One hit at time. Now they have two on with two out. Byrd could help with closing the gap this inning.

  124. 7 run lead and pitcher is still throwing curve balls in the dirt. I wonder why?

  125. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if there is a 5th game, A.J. Burnett will pitch it. And I’m more than fine with that.

  126. It was not AJ’s night and I guess he did not get to position Barmes exactly where he wanted him.

  127. EL TORO!!!!!!!!!

  128. PETEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  129. That’s it. Just keep playing.

  130. Pedro gets one back with a blast to right. 7-1 now.

  131. El Toro strikes again and gets the Buccos on the board….nicely done Pedro!

  132. Wins between these two have been lopsided all year. They win one game 10-2, we win one 9-0. Not going to jump off a cliff because AJ reverted back to AJ the Yankee for 3 innings. Cole will be dealing tomorrow.

Criticize Hurdle all you want. Lord knows he deserves it at times. But the next “That was a great move by Hurdle” comment I read on here will be the first one.

Pedro puts us on the board.

    Lets Go Bucs.

    • Very true on the “that was a great move by Clint” line. It is easy to second guess, question and manage from afar.

He is the one that guided, willed and motivated this team to a 94-68 mark, took them to first post season since Jim Leyland, earned first playoff win since October of ’92.

Glad he is the Bucs skipper.

  133. We have a quick strike offense!

(And an offense that takes a lot of strikes :-)

  134. Seems to me El Toro has really picked up his game the past week or so.. .much better at bats… me thinks it is time to swap him back into the 4th spot….

  135. AJ has been awesome – made a big difference in this team IMHO…

But it is over – he should retire…

Would love to have the chance to say thank you to him – but he should not touch the mound again as a Pirate…

    • Wasn’t he just brilliant a couple of starts ago?

    • Tough call.

Produced all season long. Never got run support. Work horse all season long.

      Blew up in playoffs.

      • I want him to come back. But my fear is that he doesn’t have the fastball anymore and is too much of a curveball pitcher

        • He is fine if he has command, pitched behind in the count because he couldn’t locate anything he was throwing. That is the key, if he doesn’t have it early – limit the damage and get him out of there. No long leashes for any pitcher now…..

        • I think he still has some zip. Think he hit 94 tonight.

I see next years rotation as:

          1. Liriano
          2. Cole
          3. Wandy (assuming he picks his option)
          4. Morton
          5. Burnett, Locke, Cumpton, Pimental, Gomez, Taillon.

Could save the $$$$ and add some offense.

          • I’d bump Morton up to 3 spot… since he is more of a sure thing at this point, both health wise and returning. It’d be the SHOCK of the century if Wandy did not pick up his option to return… whether he is healthy or not is another thing.

You know, it’s weird the situation we have now with AJ. When the Bucs got him, it was a perfect move, not only because he is a veteran who can actually pitch, but because the 2 years he signed for were the perfect bridge to Cole and Taillon. Similar to the Martin signing being a bridge to Tony Sanchez, as well as a massive upgrade for the 2 years. I’m not so sure, if Wandy is healthy, that you try all that hard to sign AJ for another year… I know Neal has said he wants him back, and I am fine with that, but I’m also fine if we let AJ go. If we knew Wandy was gonna be ok, it would be even easier to let AJ go. Taillon is coming in June and when he comes he gets a spot. With AJ and Wandy around, you’d likely have to trade someone to make a spot for Taillon. good problem to have.

            • Can’t forget about Kartsens. Never know. Decent #5 guy.

Just a lot of options still.

I was gonna put Morton at 3 as well, but more of the lefty/right switch.

          • I’ll bet you that Wandy picks up the option.

            Why wouldn’t he?

  136. From an old movie, cause I am old:

D-Day: [to Bluto] Let it go. War’s over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.

Bluto: What? Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

    Otter: [to Boon] Germans?

    Boon: Forget it, he’s rolling.

Bluto: And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough…

[thinks hard of something to say]

Bluto: The tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go!

  137. The “defensive” shortstop.

  138. Nice throw by St. Barmes

  139. Clint screwed up the playoff roster. We need Jeff Locke for mop up duty.

    See!! EYE criticized Hurdle.

  140. The important thing to keep in mind is that the Cardinals needed this game. The Pirates didn’t.

Bucs win tomorrow, and it was a successful trip to St. Louis.

    • agree, i’ve watched many an NBA playoff series where the road team gets throttled in game 1 and comes back and steals game 2. not saying basketball = baseball but a split for the Pirates was always the realistic goal in STL

    • I agree with you Scott. I just wish the manager hadn’t thought that way as well.

  141. Sure. Adams catches that one.

  142. Marte is WAY overmatched against Wainwright.

  143. I truly believe this game was a bonus had they won and gotten passed their ace.

The way Cole and Liriano have been pitching, even more excited for tomorrow’s bright and early game.

    • and i also think the quick turn is a positive for the Bucs… shower well, and back at it at noon local time tomorrow..not a lot of time to dwell on this one. i think i may put Buck in for the last 3 innings and give Martin’s knees a break though.

  144. Hey Brandie, Prayers to your family.

  145. I wasn’t buying the intimidated card, until Cutch just booted that ball.

  146. Not enough errors either. :)

  147. Well, the Bucs got outscored by a bunch in the 1960 series, but they still won 4 games and got to hoist the trophy. We have that going for us…. Play for a split on the road and a sweep at home. A 1-0 win tomorrow would be just fine with me…..

  148. Yet again lead off walks and other walks and hit batsman are killing this team. Hopefully they are getting all the crappy play and pitching out of their system for this series. They still have two more games at least. Take a couple showers tonight to get over this one and come back and crush Lynn tomorrow.

    • cant give Cardinals ANY walks or HBPs… easier said than done because they take more pitches than Jason Veritek in a rainstorm but you just have to make them hit to beat you.

  149. Let’s hope this game gets all the slop out.

    Really a poor showing….

  150. I’m not saying that they should have kept 3 catchers on the playoff roster, but if they had now would have been a good time to give Martin a breather.

And maybe they should get Mercer in there. Get his feet wet in the playoffs now that it will be low pressure.

Just don’t criticize Clint Hurdle. That is not allowed here.

    • agree that subs should be forthcoming…especially Martin… don’t need a 3rd catcher to make that move.

and no doubt Clint left AJ in too long today.

I posted that liberally above in real time during the pitching meltdown. was unabridged criticism.

    • I don’t think Mercer would hurt anything and might as well throw Tabby out there as well.

Criticize Hurdle all you want, just don’t whine about it…

  151. Matt Adams makes Zagurski look like a figure skater.

    • His aunt owns a beauty shop in town. He was bigger. He came home in the off season and would eat his mom’s stick to your ribs cooking. The team hired a nutritionist to teach him how to eat.

  152. Their last 4 games played in St Louis….all like this…needs to change tomorrow.

  153. Don’t know if this has been raised but LEST WE FORGET: The Yankees pretty much obliterated us when they won in ’60. Just one game.

  154. The Pirates only need one win in STL to regain home field advantage. Remember 10-0, 12-0, 16-3 in 60. This falls into one of those.

  155. Tip your hat to Jeanmar. He pitched well.

  156. He should hit Mercer for Barmes here to get him in there & an inning in the field.

  157. Pens are up 2 – 0 after one period…..

  158. When Gomez, Mazzaro & Morris pitch – we lost.

  159. Since this game is lost, why don’t we get every position play a chance to get in so they wont have any butterflies later in the series.

  160. We’re going to face Wainwright again this series (if we keep it going long enough, and I think we will). Sure hope we can be more competitive with him next time.

  161. Don’t know if it was due to too much partying after the wild card victory, but they need to wake up from this funk they are in against STL. Just one game. Shake it off and come out tomorrow with your heads, bats, and arms in the game.

    • Burnett always played poorly at st louis. Too bad Liriano couldn’t start game 1 or 2. He always has the cardinals number.

  162. Cutch isn’t giving up with that second hit.

  163. Bucs lose game 1 of the NLDS in a laugher. Let that sink in – they are playing in the NLDS, who saw that before opening day? Now they need to win tomorrow and sweep at home.

  164. Just one game!! Win tomorrow and they split the series!! Stay safe everyone. Until you tomorrow.

  165. The Bucs will fight with everything they have. They won’t give up and neither will I. Until tomorrow!

  166. It might sounds crazy, but I sure haven’t seen much in the Cards all year.
I think that line up is nowhere near as threatening as it used to be, and the pitching staff (obviously Wainright is the ace) is rather bland to me.
However….They have a good amount of playoff experience, and they win.
    That’s what it’s all about.
The Pirates need to win tomorrow, but I won’t say it’s over if they don’t.
