  1. Rbilak says:

I have followed this team for over 40 years. There is a much bigger story here I now see. It starts with the Bruce Arians coverup. The forced hiring of Haley, the utter failures of the draft, the Raineys and the Taumu’s. The Amos Jones cluelessness of letting him go instead of firing hIm. The recycling of former players that produced nothing and Ryan Clark getting on with his life’s work while missing tackle after tackle on the field. The pool tables and ping pong mess as a symptom. The inability to judge talent, the failure to manage the clock, the composition of the game day roster featuring players who don’t play, or later we find don’t know the plays. To me it goes back to Art 2, he call to run the ball and for Ben to play it safe, then the firing of Arians, the false narrative, the forcing of Haley. Part 2 are failed drafts, Part 3 is player evaluation, clock management, failure to recognize in game player moves (Adams), clock management, game day rosters and discipline.

The correct moves are to fire Haley now before he embarrasses them more, two release Ryan Clark now, show that your current job is more important than your future job.

I realize neither will happen, but Dan Rooney will recognize empty seats, booing, and I fully expect a Haley blow-up before the year is out. The Steeler organization is in turmoil. The question is how did it happen and the story starts with the question on who was behind Arians and why did they lie?

It goes to all levels, Owner, GM, Coaches, players.

People count the Jets game as a victory, have you seen their D line? Gilbert and whoever the left tackle are are in for a long day.

    - over under on Colon penalties 1 1/2.

    - over under on Haley being sued before kickoff? That is the state of the 2013 Steelers.

  2. What happened to Dejan’s Blog access on front page of Trib Sports?

My finger is tired from so many clicks to get here!

I have to go to church now, so no time left for comment!

  3. cherokee23 says:

thought it was just me……it’s been missing for a few days

  4. Jandy says:

The friggin blog terrorists stole it!

  5. Papa Croz says:

Was there a chat this past week? If so , I couldn’t
    find it.

  6. Drew71 says:

So yesterday evening I was sitting in Lager Haus, my favorite watering hole in Palm Harbor which is just north of Clearwater, along with several friends. (Yes, I pay some people to pretend to be my friends. I tip a lot for the same reason.)

We’re watching Penn State – Michigan. Michigan goes up by 10 in the fourth quarter so we flip to the Pens. Goal-Goal-Goal-Goal. Holy Crap.

Then my Manhattan son texts: “You watching this??”

(Yes. He texted YOU not U. I trained him.)

I texted: yes…looks like a Pens style shoot out.

    He said: WRONG GAME.

So we flipped another TV to Penn State, which we figured was long over, and caught the third and fourth overtime periods.

And we watched the rest of the Pens-Lightning Round game, and that nickname fit, huh?

And in the background there was another TV with the 1-0 StL-LA game.

    Wow.

By the way. One of my so-called friends is a cop. Somehow because of his job he has access to discounts on Hockey and Baseball tickets. (I guess 7-11 owns the franchises.) Knowing I’m a Pens fan, he said we shoulda gone to the Lightning game.

Turns out, NO FREAKING WAY. Then we woulda missed the action from the other two games.

Not to mention some other intriguing games all day.

And did I mention it’s a brew pub? Some intriguing beer, too.

It’s about an hour north of Bradenton, for those of you who do the spring training thing. I’m there most Saturday nights (alone; that’s my wife’s date night), so that’s probably a strike against the place.

  7. Eric Bowser says:

I won’t need to watch today’s game to know how it will go.

Kick/Punt return team won’t give offense good starting field position.
Kick/Punt coverage team will give up too many yards to change the field position game.
Offensive line won’t open up holes, running game will be lucky to get 50-75 yards.
Offensive line can’t pass protect, probably another 3-5 sack game.
Ben will be hurried and throw another interception or two again.
Receivers can’t get off the line, which forces line to protect longer, that won’t happen.
Miller forced to stay in to pass protect more giving Ben less options to throw ball.
    No pressure from defensive line.
Maybe 1-2 pressures, no sacks by Woodley, Worilds, and Jones.
Corners line up 10 yards off the ball…
Ryan Clark misses a few more tackles
Polamalu will be out of position, snap after snap without 1 big play or turnover

    Jets 27 Steelers 6

  8. Rbilak says:

Spot on. I think it will be closer, but their o and D line will dominant ours. The Monday night factor may hurt them enough to keep us in it. But there is no arguing in your game summary. Throw in some clock mismanagement, poor substitution, and some close but not caught balls by Sanders and the Obvious Comments post game by Tomlin and you got it all

  9. Drew71 says:

Here’s hoping Eric has the score right but the order wrong.

  10. Jim S. says:

I thought the same thing. What a pain.

  11. Jandy says:

Glad you have someplace to call home, Drew ;)

  12. Jandy says:

Mornin Lunatics! Gotta go do the grocery shopping UGH!
    Ya’ll have a great day :)

  13. Drew71 says:

    Summary? It’s a prediction.

Valid based on recent history but it’s not a summary.

The beauty of sports is they actually get to play the game before we write our summaries.

For a whole lotta reasons for both teams, I find this to be a difficult game to predict. To use my word for the day, almost intriguing.

  14. Jim S. says:

Sadly, I can’t argue with any of it.

And the Jets are not a very good team. That’s the saddest part.

Hoping the Steelers will surprise. I so want to be wrong.

  15. Brandie says:

Maybe they will have a Penn State type miracle. They need to get Jason Grill I to pump up the crowd!

  16. Drew71 says:

    Day? You shop all day?

Hate to see your Giant Iggle bill.

But if you’re buying that much, what time should we be over?

    I’ll bring the beer. Naturally.

Eric will bring the angst. Naturally.

We’ll need directions. But don’t tell Thunder.

  17. Drew71 says:

If Dejan was awake, he’d post something about all the FuelPerks you’ll earn.

  18. MarkV says:

If this is a re-design they need to re-think it!

Never did find last week’s chat even after multiple clicks on DK’s blog. The connection to the blogs in the team section has disappeared too.

  19. Drew71 says:

I’m out for a morning walk. Totally by accident and no fooling, I figured out that it must be squirrel mating season.

I took the most amazing video. Can’t wait to show my wife.

On second thought. Maybe that’s not such a good idea.

    - Nature Boy Drew Flair

    (Can I get a Woooooo?)

  20. Brandie says:

“Cliches are the tools of the incompetent.”

    “Incompetence is the $tandard.”

Me channeling my inner evil Mike Tomlin who is nbent on destroying the world!

  21. Eric Bowser says:

    Exactly… or is that obviously.

I think Steelers are so bad, the story won’t change no matter who they play. They are that bad. Until I see changes on the field, I expect to write those same predictions for the next 11 weeks.

Stinks that I think Rex Ryan has a better grasp for how bad his team is than Mike Tomlin.

  22. Brandie says:

    See revamped cliches below.

  23. Drew71 says:

Stinks that, at least so far, he’s getting more from his bad team.

  24. Arriba Wilver says:

    Did you see Lindsey Vonn?

  25. Drew71 says:

We’ll have to go back and check a few columns.

    Was that mean?

Good thing You Know Wooooooo is still asleep.

  26. Drew71 says:

No, but I’d love to show my video to her.

  27. scapper says:

I assume you guys are using your phones to read this, but if not, just put the blog on your desktop.

  28. Brandie says:

I’ll try not to poke the bear too much, n’at!

  29. Dom says:

The site was down when the chat was supposed to take place.

  30. Drew71 says:

Yes. I would never do that.

Luckily he’s more of a squirrel.

  31. Drew71 says:

And I have the video to prove it.

  32. Brandie says:

You make me proud to be a Penn State Alum, Drew-k!

  33. Drew71 says:

Ok. There’s my wife. Time for a life altering moment.

I’m gonna show her the video.

  34. Jandy says:

LOL! Yinz kill me. I don’t like to shop that much Drewster,
Just not sure what the rest of the day will bring.
I don’t want to even watch the Steelers.
Hubby is STILL working at the local television station finishing up that morning show set.

Glad I got back on for a bit….I see I’m not the ONLY one who doesn’t want to watch tht Steelers…

  35. Jandy says:

    Double wooooooo!

  36. Jandy says:

Uh-oh! I wonder who came out on top?????

    ;X

  37. Brandie says:

    Good afternoon Jandelicita!

  38. Jandy says:

    Well done, Ma’am!

    I’m proud of you!

  39. Brandie says:

There should be a Mike Tomlin cliche masher app.

  40. Brandie says:

    So many meanings there.

  41. Jandy says:

LOL Bill Gates needs to get on it!

  42. Bizrow says:

This place is most definitely alive this am.

    Beat Em Bucs

    Steelers win in a nailbiter

  43. Jandy says:

    Hey Biz!

Hope you’re right about the Steelers…

  44. Bizrow says:

Me being right would probably be a first ;-)

  45. Brandie says:

    Here’s hoping, Strictly Bizrow.

  46. Jandy says:

    seconded!!!

  47. JohninOshkosh says:

Today is anniversary of one of the great moments in sports history: Maz’ walk off World Series homer.

  48. theplanisworking says:

    You rang? ;)

  49. theplanisworking says:

    +1960 ! :D

  50. Bizrow says:

Crap, and here I am stuck at work again.

Some day I’m going to make it down to Oakland to relive that day

  51. Brandie says:

    The Hippo Is The Standard!

  52. theplanisworking says:

    HA!
    Some standard.

    Good day to you, Brandecita.
    Get those Tomlinisms ready………..

  53. JMB says:

If we can’t win this game, BAH!

  54. JohninOshkosh says:

No way to the Steelers go to 0-5. The football Gods will not allow the Steelers and NY Giants to be a combined 0-11.

And no way does Geno Smith beat Pittsburgh.

  55. Arriba Wilver says:

    Thanks, Dejan. ;-)

  56. Jandy says:

Hey Hipposter, glad to see you before I sign off. Gotta feed hubby…he worked this morning….catch ya later, maybe….Go Steelers!

  57. theplanisworking says:

    Nice first offensive series.
    Here we go !

    ;)

  58. Jandy says:

work is a four letter word…

  59. Barb says:

Okay this is going to be a loooooooooooooooong afternoon me thinks.

  60. Jandy says:

Happy birthday to 21sthebest if we ever see him again lol

  61. Barb says:

Well that was a good defensive series.

  62. Barb says:

Happy Birthday 21sthebest. Are we still 21? :)

  63. Sarah says:

    …annnd a penalty….Gilbert? Lovely.

  64. Barb says:

Well that was fun. OMG are they bad.

  65. theplanisworking says:

    Hi Barb.
    You arent kidding!

  66. JohninOshkosh says:

I wonder if he ran in Chicago marathon today ? He’s been gone for awhile.

  67. Barb says:

Where was Sanders looking at? I don’t know if I am going to be able to stick around for the stinkfest.

  68. Sarah says:

I’m trying to follow on nfl com….who is at LT? Jones or Beachum??

  69. Hell Unleashed says:

This team needs significant improvement just to suck.

  70. Wild Bill says:

    Beachum

  71. Hell Unleashed says:

    Obviously…

  72. Barb says:

I have to light a candle because the smell coming from my TV is awful.

  73. theplanisworking says:

    Hmmmmmmm.
Its not raining today, I may go paint some grass.
    Or sweep the mud.

Or Drew can show his video to the group.

  74. Barb says:

Hi Hipposter. This is actually the first game that I have seen from the beginning. Wrong move on my part. Sheesh. My friend seems to think Ben won’t be here next year that he will sign a contract with AZ to be with Arians.

  75. Barb says:

You could watch paint dry that would be just as much fun. I think I will go do some shopping and hit the Columbus Day sales.

  76. theplanisworking says:

Nice of Clark to jaw at the Jet player, after being more than 10 yards away from the play.
I cant remember a year the Steeler D was this bad.

    Maybe 1986.

  77. theplanisworking says:

I think hr is signed thru next year, but I can see him being traded for picks……..

  78. 21sthebest says:

Jandy that’s so nice of you but I hate to tell you that it was last Sunday. But I can pretend it’s today again!

  79. 21sthebest says:

He didn’t. He ran the Wineglass Marathon last Sunday in Corning, NY. I wanted to do Chicago but they moved it a week later from my birthday. Got this psychotic idea that I just had to run a marathon on my 50th birthday.

  80. JohninOshkosh says:

    Well done, sir.

  81. Sarah says:

    PIT w 12 total yards?
    For Jeebus sake.

  82. Barb says:

Well, well, well they can move the ball

  83. Barb says:

This is offense is so offensive.

  84. Barb says:

Clark needs to have his jaw wired shut.

  85. JohninOshkosh says:

Remember when the Steelers used to score touchdowns ?

  86. Barb says:

    Gee John when was that?

  87. 21sthebest says:

According to Jim Nantz we just had a dropped touchdown. Also know as not a touchdown.

  88. Eric Bowser says:

If you can get the offensive line to pass protect for a 7-step drop by the QB and send a WR straight up the field, teams should be able to make that throw more often than not as Polamalu and Clark are old.

  89. Eric Bowser says:

    I am amazed…. 6-3 lead for the Pir…. Steelers.

  90. Eric Bowser says:

Impressed by any offensive coordinator that throws RB, TE and WR screens as the central plays of their game plan.

  91. 21sthebest says:

    Thanks John.

  92. Barb says:

At least we have the lead!

  93. Barb says:

Well that’s 2 penalties on this series.

  94. Barb says:

OMG what the he$$ are they doing?

  95. Sarah says:

Well it’s not really a passing league, Eric….I mean, look at Peyton’s numbers.
    ;-)

  96. Eric Bowser says:

    Offensive breakout….

    3 field goals…

  97. Barb says:

Will the break the double digit barrier?

  98. Sarah says:

CBS says biggest lead of the season. yay.

  99. Barb says:

    Doesn’t say much for Pgh.

  100. How about on your 60th? I didn’t run one on any of my birthdays, so hats off to ‘ya.

  101. Eric Bowser says:

Did I see, what I just saw?

  102. Barb says:

    BEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  103. Barb says:

Yes you do not need your eyes examined.

  104. Barb says:

They just Keisel out with a rib injury. Isn’t that just great.

  105. Naje says:

Is the flip into the endzone really necessary?

All this is good and bad about the steelers in one play: a great pass/catch (finally) and a young jerk acting the part.

    Attention starved cash money punks…

  106. Barb says:

Finally an interception by BIG MOUTH CLARK.

  107. Barb says:

No it isn’t. They just like to be hot dogs.

  108. twentytwo22 says:

That was his 6th TD in 3 1/4 seasons. He may never score another one.

  109. Eric Bowser says:

Whoa…. Steelers defense….. play of the century…. an interception.

  110. twentytwo22 says:

He now has more career TD (6) than Fumbles (5). It was a big moment for him.

  111. pattonbb says:

Hi folks, Just checking in with a few thoughts.

Yesterday’s PSU game was one of the best college games I’ve ever seen. Just amazing to watch. I never considered myself a Penn State fan, but I find myself rooting for them more and more.

Way too much strutting and celebrating going on by a winless team in this Steelers game. And I usually like seeing that emotion. Ziggy Hood gets pushed out of more plays than any Steeler I can remember. Vince WIlliams looks promising. David DeCastro does not.

    I miss baseball.

  112. Barb says:

    HEATH is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  113. Arriba Wilver says:

Lots of Steeler Nation in New York. And lots of “Heath’s” when he caught that last pass.

  114. theplanisworking says:

    They arent saying “Heath”……….
they are saying “feet”, in honor of Rex.

    ;)

  115. Barb says:

I hate these gadget plays. They can’t disguise them.

  116. Barb says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHA! Good one!!!! :)

  117. twentytwo22 says:

Opps. Sanders 6 TD, 6 Fumbles.

  118. theplanisworking says:

    Sorry, just had to………… ;)

  119. Eric Bowser says:

Ok… to make Drew happy, need a TD and 2-pt conversion.

  120. Barb says:

    That ain’t gonna happen.

  121. Brandie says:

The Steelers will keep effin’ around and may actually win this game.

  122. Barb says:

Can’t they teach these “players” how to tackle!!!!!!!! Aaaaah!

  123. Eric Bowser says:

What is this world we live in…. a QB pressure by Jones turns into Timmons INT……

  124. Brandie says:

Holy Crap! A take away. Obviously, it was planned!

  125. Barb says:

Yes Lawrence Timmons. Dick LeBeau is going to have a perfect record against rookie QBs.

  126. Barb says:

    Obviously. :)

  127. Dom says:

    Steelers!!!

  128. Drew71 says:

    Gameball to Dejan.

    No prediction.

  129. Barb says:

    Well it’s a WIN.

  130. Eric Bowser says:

    The reverse-jinx works again… damn I’m good.

  131. Barb says:

His prediction was that a game would be played.

  132. theplanisworking says:

    You rang? ;)

  133. Barb says:

Way to go Eric. Fire Bylsma. (I just had to)

  134. theplanisworking says:

At least we wont go 0-16.

Now we hurt our draft position. ;)

    Now, the Ratbirds.

  135. twentytwo22 says:

    Around the AFC Metro

3-2 Bengals in OT at Bills
    3-3 Ravens lose vs Packers
    3-3 Browns lose vs Lions
    1-4 Steelers win at Jets

  136. Wild Bill says:

    Steelers won, Ben’s still alive – it’s a start.

  137. Barb says:

Baltimore is losing to Green Bay and GB is driving. Bills and Bengals are in OT. Maybe we could gain a game on each team.

  138. Bizrow says:

We had em all the way, snort, snort, guffaw (in honor of The Gunner on this most magical Pittsburgh day)

  139. theplanisworking says:

    +1960

  140. twentytwo22 says:

    The Jaguars…

    4-4-JAC 26 (14:17) (Punt formation) W.Ta´ufo´ou up the middle to JAC 27 for 1 yard (M.Unrein).

    Manning TD. 7-0 Denver.

  141. Brandie says:

“It’s important we get back on that side of the ledger.”

-Mike Tomlin on winning versus losing.

    Obviously.

    Just For You, Nighttime Planitor.

  142. Barb says:

Surprise, Surprise. Shazam. Channeling my best Gomer Pyle.

  143. Brandie says:

I’m scared of you. You know where all of the bodies are buried.

  144. Barb says:

The Bengals won in OT. BOOOOOO!

  145. theplanisworking says:

Tomlin is oblivious, not obvious…………. ;)

    Thanks Brandimal.
    Hope to see you tomorrow.
Hope you are hanging in there……………..

  146. theplanisworking says:

    Night Barb.
    Boo louder next time. ;)

  147. Barb says:

Night Hipposter. I see you tomorrow.

  148. Brandie says:

    Pleasant evening folks!

  149. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Can’t ever beat the effort of one Ben Roethlisberger….Steelers win!…lol.

  150. Steelag70 says:

So our newly acquired OL, Levi Brown, is already injured…hurt his right triceps in PRE-GAME warmups….wow…

  151. Eric Bowser says:

LOL…. I need to find the hidden stash of money buried in the yard… I need a 1-man vacation, view of the ocean, and room service.

  152. Eric Bowser says:

    That’ll happen in June 2015.

  153. Eric Bowser says:

I missed that one… LOL… this team is a mess even in victory.

  154. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I think I just tore my triceps taking out the trash.

  155. pattonbb says:

I strained mine while eating a chicken wing.

  156. Dom says:

Our offensive line did well today didn’t they?

  157. Eric Bowser says:

    Shut Up!

    I’m quite eager to read Monday’s column….

  158. Milo Hamilton says:

I get a perverse joy from the suffering of Red Sox fans.

  159. Lad 9 says:

Hee hee. Me too. Go Tigers!

  160. JohninOshkosh says:

I do not care for Ortiz.

  161. JohninOshkosh says:

We’ll see that homerun replayed as long as we live, especially if Boston wins this game.

  162. Milo Hamilton says:

    Serves me right.

  163. Milo Hamilton says:

They say there’s no momentum in baseball. I generally agree with that from game to game. But not during the course of a game. I can’t see how Detroit has any chance tonight.

  164. JohninOshkosh says:

    Agreed. Detroit looks crushed.

  165. JohninOshkosh says:

Literally watching a baseball team disintegrate before our very eyes.

  166. Milo Hamilton says:

Yeah. Rick Porcello = white flag.

  167. JohninOshkosh says:

At least Fielder didn’t go all Moises Alou on the kid.

  168. JohninOshkosh says:

To quote the man, “I don’t believe what I just saw.”

  169. Eric Bowser says:

Jim Leyland…. always finds a way.

  170. Milo Hamilton says:

Didn’t Smyly just get Papi out last night ? Wouldn’t you think he would want to get that matchup again ? Like you said, always seems to find a way.

  171. Steelag70 says:

Looks like Levi Brown may miss the rest of the season….

  172. Jandy says:

    You’re welcome :P

  173. Jandy says:

Ahhh I missed by a week…oh well, it’s the thought that counts :)

  174. Dejan kept telling me’he wanted me to use the blog so hopefully I can now. Anyhôw, I’m glad the Steelers finally won so he can now have his late birthday present. And hopefully, they won’t regress next Sunday against Baltimore, especially since they’ve shown that they can win with what they have.

  175. After last Sunday’s win, Ben was heaping praise on Todd Haley. And so, like Dejan has said, there’s no curative like winning.

  176. The Steelers won 19-6 and played good football, finally.

  177. The Jets lost their first home game this season to the Steelers and their weaknesses were expoused for us all to see, which is they way it should’ve been all along, since the Steelers are hardly the team that you’d expect to lose their first four.

  178. I saw the Pens/Lightning game on Fox Sports here in Daytona Beach and it was good to see them win 5-4 with Niskanen scoring the winning goal with 19 seconds left. Also, I followed the Pens’ opener on WFAN New York versus the Jersey Devils on my tablet and thus witnessed M. A. Fleury’s one man show.

  179. It was 43-40 in four overtimes. And so, naturally, it’s no wonder that you’re proud to be a Penn State fan.

  180. Well, at least they won’t go 0-16 although some so-called experts feared they might although some previous doubters now predict that they may might go at least 8-8 although we’ll have to wait and see about that.

  181. Mr. Clark wouldn’t like it one bit if a teammate started critiquing him. And so, it’s best that he shut up and play and quit auditioning for ESPN every week.

  182. Imagine that! Four field goals and one touchdown. Anyhow, at least the defense finally came up with two interceptions after all those games without a turnover. And they finally won one.

  183. Unless the Steelers show improvement more signifcant than this, I’m still going to show more interest in the Penguins, who are 4-1 and playing against Edmonton tonight.
