  1. It’s a Hockey Afternoon in Pittsburgh!

Penguins lineup has a bit of a surprise as Engelland and Glass are scratched.

    1st: Kunitz – Crosby – Dupuis
    2nd: Jokinen – Malkin – Kobasew
    3rd: Jeffrey – Sutter – Conner
    4th: Zolnierczyk – Vitale – Adams

    DP1: Orpik – Martin
    DP2: Scuderi – Niskanen
    DP3: Maatta – Bortuzzo

    Fleury starting in goal.

  2. Conner almost scores from right-wing circle and after 7 minutes of play with no whistle, we get our first penalty of the game against Vancouver winger Chris Higgins, holding.

  3. Nice save by MAF

  4. Welcome to Eric’s Penguins thread. ;)

    Strange 1:00 start.
Stranger to see Torts coaching the Canucks.

Beats seeing more DK vacation slides…………..

  5. Is that 2 or 3 posts hit today?

  6. So close for Maatta

  7. Ok, shows you what I know about the Canucks lineup

    :)

  8. Good, that’s 5 minutes that Engelland won’t see the ice… I’ll take it.

  9. Ugh, WTF, MAF

    • Oh, please dont dare criticize Fleury.
His defenders will be out in full force.

I know he has played better this year, has a new goalie coach, has seen a shrink………. but as long as he does things like that, I will be a bit skeptical of his improvement.

Yeah, I know that was fluky, but more fluky things seem to happen to him than any other goalie.

  10. That’s the kind of crap from Fleury that I can’t stand….

  11. That was nifty.

    • Speaking of nifty,
      Good Afternoon, Milo.

Going to watch the riveting Pitt game this evening?

      • Already gathering my cold weather gear. A little nervous about that one. ODU scores in bunches.

        • Are they 1-AA?
I dont know much about them.

          • They are. This got scheduled when Pitt had to drop Villanova in order to get Florida St for the opener. They did Pitt a favor & filled the spot on short notice. Their QB is an NFL prospect.

            • Oh, then it shouldnt be a mismatch.
Any time a 1-AA scholl gets scheduled, people just look on paper, and dismiss them.

Always good to see NFL prospects from the smaller schools.

  12. Woohoo, Sid!!

Good to get the equalizer back.

  13. That was REALLY nifty!

  14. Plan, do you have a suggestion in mind for an available coach to replace HCDB?

    • I was a huge supporter of hiring Lindy Ruff. Dallas hired him.

      Others said hire Vigneault.

But now we have a replacement right on our bench. Jacques Martin.

  15. I’m so glad Torts got the ouster from the Rangers.

Less times we have to see his sour mug during Pens games.

  16. In the two Bum Phillips obits I read today, the writers included a lot of his classic quotes, but the one I didn’t see was this beauty, said after the second consecutive loss to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game: “My tombstone’s gonna say ‘He’da lived a lot longer if he didn’t wouldna had to play the Steelers six times in two years.”

  17. Hey hey, quiet on the hockey thread today.. Sorry, got in when there was 7 minutes left. Chris Conner…hmmmm…

Dodkong, good to see a new face here….where ya from, friend?

  18. No way Flower should have left that goal in. He watch it go up, should have snagged it with his glove. smh

  19. I wonder how much the players/coaches do read this blog.

Last week, I criticized Steigy for his insane call of “he clears the puck, but not out”. Dumbest call ever.

Since then, he hasnt said that one single time.
    Just curious.

  20. Afternoon game for the Pens.

Second home night game of season for Pitt.

    Behold the power of television.

  21. Pens doing well on this PK.

They need to shore that aspect of their game up some.

  22. KUNITZ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Great pass by malkin!

  23. Woohoo, Kunitz!!

  24. Yes, Torts, the Pens will continue to torture your teams even if you are employed by one on the other side of the continent.

    Suck it!!

  25. LMAO that got it right….wah to Torts LOLOL

  26. Lucky call of the net off the hooks.

  27. Does anyone still taunt Torts with water bottles ? What a putz that guy is.

  28. Vancouver’s defensemen are soft…

  29. Ok, SOME Penguin D needs to stop maybe one of those SEVEN passes. Good God.

  30. Pens D looks awful.
    That is all.

  31. Jandy, just read the Hobey Baker comment .
    Steigy is classless.
    Hope he goes soon.

    Bring back Lange.

  32. That was a nice save by Bortuzzo. Flower owes him a beer

  33. Impressed by the Penguins stupidity to allow concert less than 24 hours prior to an afternoon game.

  34. That’s not Zina Garrison, is it ?

  35. Aw c’mon, that Steigy comment is pretty darn funny. I’m sure he wouldn’t say it again if he could go back, but for a spontaneous comment, it’s no big deal. I could see if it was a reference to Payne Stewart or someone more recent, but we’re talking 1918.

As for Steigy or Lange, while Lange is a deserved HOFer and a civic treasure of sorts, he is past his prime and really difficult to listen to at times. He so needs to stop with all the post-goal sayings, a shtick that was wonderful for a two decades or so but then became cringe-inducing, forced and plain embarrassing. He was replaced for a reason. Ask around.

I do love the guy and his overall body of work. He’s a part of all Pens fans pasts, but if he were put back on the TV broadcasts, I think you’d hear a lot more complaints than you do about the current duo, who I happen to greatly enjoy.

    • sorry, scapper, can’t agree with you on Steigy. There’s some things you just don’t joke about. That would have gotten him fired in many places.

And we’ll just have to agree to disagree on Lang. I’d much rather listen to his goal calls then Steigy’s lame “that puck was cleared…almost”
      Please.

    • Lets just say I respectfully disagree with every single point of your post, and I will leave it at that.

    • I dislike it because it lacks respect.

Who knows who might be listening? What if one of Baker’s family members was? Just a matter of respect to not make joviality of the dead and the way they passed on.

    • The Steigerwalds grew up near me and let me tell you from what I’ve heard about them, they are truly pieces of work, and I don’t mean good work….

      • That’s funny Biz…seriously….I never liked Steigy….

        • I thought Paul was ok as the color guy when he and Lange worked together.

But when Paul moved to play by play, where he should be somewhat more objective, he completely fails at it. He is such a homer and it makes his play by play nearly unbearable.

      • John, and his opinions, are even worse in my book.

And that’s about the best thing I can say about the guy so it’s my turn to “leave it at that.”

      • Biz, you bring up a great point.

John is a bitter, angry old man. He is really out there.

Paul only got his job way back when because John was sports director at KDKA, and was a big deal in Pittsburgh sports media.

        Truly amazing stuff.

  36. And has anyone ever satisfactorily explained how this new, state-of-the-art arena can have such bad ice? How was that allowed to happen? I’m no engineer, so perhaps you can’t just guarantee great ice in a city as far “south” as Pgh., but in this day and age it seems strange.

  37. I just flipped thru the channels here, and I have a choice of 17 college football games here.

    Yikes.

  38. Let’s go Pens!

I want some Japanese at Tsuki in Penn Hills and Jandy might want some Chinese

  39. So we’re thinking here that Geno’s going to get one.

  40. Very close for Geno there

  41. GrrrRR!! These guys are way to complacent with the puck in our end. Dayum!

  42. Paul Martin looks like he missed his wake up call today.

  43. CLEARED BY THE CANUCKS, DIDNT GET IT OUT !!!!!!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !

Ladies and Germs, Tool Time with Steigy!

  44. Bortuzzo taking chances there. Lucky it didn’t come back to haunt him.

  45. So that’s not a penalty ?

  46. Too much offensive zone time for the C…nevermind.

  47. CRAP! Don’t clear the puck, that happens

  48. Olli Maata !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. MATTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  50. Dodders called it

  51. It was only a MAATTA of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. Woohoo, Maatta!!

Welcome to the NHL, young man!

  53. woop woop!!!!!

  54. So what did I miss? :)

  55. I think Maatta goes back to his junior team after game 9

    • Here, I posted this yesterday …

Heard Rossi on the radio during lunch & I was very encouraged. He says that in regards to Maata, the Penguins aren’t viewing the 9 game deadline as a deadline at all. All going past the 9th game does is activate his entry level deal & the Pens aren’t concerned about that. It doesn’t get him to free agency any sooner. That doesn’t happen until game 40 and that’s the number they have their eyes on.

They are convinced he’s one of their top 6 defensemen (you’re kidding, better than Bortuzzo & Engelland ?) and their chief concern is can he withstand the rigors of an 82 game season. They’ll have a much better read on that at mid season. Plus there’s the Olympic break to factor in. Doesn’t sound like he’s going anywhere.

    • I think he stays til game 39, then goes down.

    • Why would the Pens keep Maatta up when the precedent they’ve set is to not play young Dmen?

They sent Letang down when he was a rookie? They didn’t stick with Despres two years ago.

Maybe Maatta stays past game 9, but once Letang is back, I don’t think Maatta stays.

  56. The Pens continue to give up open looks like they have been, it’s going to doom them.

Canucks have too good of players to continue to miss like that.

  57. 3 goals today. What’s wrong with old —?

  58. let’s see if Sutter is worth anything

  59. Torts is ready to chew glass after that call.

  60. CRAP !

  61. we’re going to overtime

  62. Shoot out kids….

  63. Now shoot out…we’ll see how well MAF can focus

  64. GeNO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  65. Why is Steigy surprised at using a Dman? Pens use Letang *all* the time.

  66. Brutal Geno. Brutal.

  67. WOOP WOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, all you lunatics go eat !!!!!!!!!!!

  68. Geno and MAF did it!

  69. Great game, Fleury was good and Gino wins it!

  70. If there’s anything that people cannot fault MAF about is his penalty shoot/shootout ability. He excels at it.

    • This is my biggest complaint against Fleury.
In a shootout, he HAS to concentrate, and he does well.

Its the other 90% of the time he just melts down.
If he could focus 90% of the time, he would be all-world!!!

DK: Fleury has a skill set that’s beyond ideal for shootouts. This is apples and oranges. He’ll stand up long enough to take away a straight shot, and there aren’t more than 4-5 players in the league capable of dekeing him in tight. But that means very little compared to countless other game situations.

      • Agree with you, Plan.

Why he seems to be unable to translate the SO focus to normal game time is a concern. Fix that, and a lot of his problems are solved.

But that’s easier said than done.

        • I’d caution against comparing shootout to the other patterns that happen in a game.

I’m ancient, slow and arthritic, and it’s hard to beat me in a SO. Even when I give away 20-plus years.

It’s just a very individual skill, with no D and no O so completely unlike other scenarios … and hard to draw conclusions vs. the rest of the goalies’ strengths and weaknesses.

      • OMG!!!

        I woke the bear!

        RUN !!!!!!!

  71. Okay see you all tomorrow.

  72. OK Loonies, I’m out. Great win.
    Enjoy your evening :)
