  1. Eric Bowser says:

It’s a Hockey Afternoon in Pittsburgh!

Penguins lineup has a bit of a surprise as Engelland and Glass are scratched.

    1st: Kunitz – Crosby – Dupuis
    2nd: Jokinen – Malkin – Kobasew
    3rd: Jeffrey – Sutter – Conner
    4th: Zolnierczyk – Vitale – Adams

    DP1: Orpik – Martin
    DP2: Scuderi – Niskanen
    DP3: Maatta – Bortuzzo

    Fleury starting in goal.

  2. Eric Bowser says:

    Sounds like Pens changed lineup….

    Engelland in, Harry Z out.

  3. Eric Bowser says:

Glass in… guess Penguins and media there can’t report lineups… too much to ask I guess.

  4. Dodkong says:

Not sure what the thought process is in having Engelland in and Zolnierczyk out.

Zol has to have a bit more offensive capability, even for a grit guy and it’s not like the Canucks ice a bunch of thugs that Engelland’s fists will be needed badly.

  5. Eric Bowser says:

Conner almost scores from right-wing circle and after 7 minutes of play with no whistle, we get our first penalty of the game against Vancouver winger Chris Higgins, holding.

  6. Eric Bowser says:

I’ll never understand the madness of Bylsma….

  7. theplanisworking says:

    F I R _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ;)

  8. Dodkong says:

    I think it’s a bro-mance for a work hard type guy.

  9. Dodkong says:

    Nice save by MAF

  10. theplanisworking says:

Welcome to Eric’s Penguins thread. ;)

    Strange 1:00 start.
Stranger to see Torts coaching the Canucks.

Beats seeing more DK vacation slides…………..

  11. Eric Bowser says:

I was waiting for you to do this… thanks

  12. theplanisworking says:

Is that 2 or 3 posts hit today?

  13. Dodkong says:

    So close for Maatta

  14. theplanisworking says:

Glad to be of service. ;)

  15. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, was all lonely in here… kids are running around the house… don’t want to watch the hockey game with the old man.

  16. Dodkong says:

Ok, shows you what I know about the Canucks lineup

  17. Eric Bowser says:

Good, that’s 5 minutes that Engelland won’t see the ice… I’ll take it.

  18. theplanisworking says:

Its ok, you can concentrate on firing Bylsma more with us.

  19. Dodkong says:

    Ugh, WTF, MAF

  20. Eric Bowser says:

That’s the kind of crap from Fleury that I can’t stand….

  21. Milo Hamilton says:

    That was nifty.

  22. theplanisworking says:

Oh, please dont dare criticize Fleury.
His defenders will be out in full force.

I know he has played better this year, has a new goalie coach, has seen a shrink………. but as long as he does things like that, I will be a bit skeptical of his improvement.

Yeah, I know that was fluky, but more fluky things seem to happen to him than any other goalie.

  23. theplanisworking says:

    Speaking of nifty,
    Good Afternoon, Milo.

Going to watch the riveting Pitt game this evening?

  24. Dodkong says:

Meh, letting in a weak goal like that he deserves the criticism.

But I’ll also give credit when he deserves it.

  25. Milo Hamilton says:

Already gathering my cold weather gear. A little nervous about that one. ODU scores in bunches.

  26. Dodkong says:

    Woohoo, Sid!!

Good to get the equalizer back.

  27. theplanisworking says:

    That was REALLY nifty!

  28. theplanisworking says:

    Are they 1-AA?
I dont know much about them.

  29. theplanisworking says:

    Oh, agreed.

  30. Dodkong says:

Plan, do you have a suggestion in mind for an available coach to replace HCDB?

  31. Dodkong says:

I’m so glad Torts got the ouster from the Rangers.

Less times we have to see his sour mug during Pens games.

  32. theplanisworking says:

I was a huge supporter of hiring Lindy Ruff. Dallas hired him.

    Others said hire Vigneault.

But now we have a replacement right on our bench. Jacques Martin.

  33. scapper says:

In the two Bum Phillips obits I read today, the writers included a lot of his classic quotes, but the one I didn’t see was this beauty, said after the second consecutive loss to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game: “My tombstone’s gonna say ‘He’da lived a lot longer if he didn’t wouldna had to play the Steelers six times in two years.”

  34. Milo Hamilton says:

They are. This got scheduled when Pitt had to drop Villanova in order to get Florida St for the opener. They did Pitt a favor & filled the spot on short notice. Their QB is an NFL prospect.

  35. theplanisworking says:

Oh, then it shouldnt be a mismatch.
Any time a 1-AA scholl gets scheduled, people just look on paper, and dismiss them.

Always good to see NFL prospects from the smaller schools.

  36. theplanisworking says:

Bum went 55-35 in his 7 years in Houston.
And his reward was to get fired.

Even though he was a rival of the Steelers, I always liked him.

  37. Jandy says:

Hey hey, quiet on the hockey thread today.. Sorry, got in when there was 7 minutes left. Chris Conner…hmmmm…

Dodkong, good to see a new face here….where ya from, friend?

  38. Jandy says:

No way Flower should have left that goal in. He watch it go up, should have snagged it with his glove. smh

  39. theplanisworking says:

Did you get to see that Sid-Flower link from yesterday?
Hope this Saturday is treating you well.

  40. Jandy says:

Didn’t get a chance yet, I will go back and catch it…hubby has me busy so far, but taking a break for the game.

  41. Jandy says:

    LOL! Ya nut!

  42. Jandy says:

Agree on Torts, he’s a horse’s azz lol

  43. theplanisworking says:

    Well, isnt that appropriate? ;)

  44. Dodkong says:

    Hiya Jandy.

Currently reside in Beaver County, but not my home area.

  45. Jandy says:

    perfectly lol :)

  46. Jandy says:

Hi Dodkong, reason I asked I asked is Bizrow keeps a list of Dejan’s Lunatics Asylum. We can add you if you care to give us your home town :)

  47. theplanisworking says:

I wonder how much the players/coaches do read this blog.

Last week, I criticized Steigy for his insane call of “he clears the puck, but not out”. Dumbest call ever.

Since then, he hasnt said that one single time.
    Just curious.

  48. JohninOshkosh says:

    Afternoon game for the Pens.

Second home night game of season for Pitt.

    Behold the power of television.

  49. Bizrow says:

Where in Beaver County? We keep a list of lunatic locations, currently over 400 but I don’t have the list as I am stuck at work right now.

  50. Jandy says:

    LOL that’s funny

  51. Dodkong says:

I’m good with being slightly vague. But thank you for asking. :)

  52. Milo Hamilton says:

One last Saturday for old times sake ?

  53. Jandy says:

Yeah well, I still prefer night games. lol. THis messes up my housecleaning schedule ;)

  54. Dodkong says:

There is *plenty* that is awful about Steigy.

Wish the Pens would show him the door, post haste!

  55. Jandy says:

ha! I’m on it, Biz. WTH they trying to kill you, you’re working AGAIN?

  56. Milo Hamilton says:

I’d be much happier if they were reversed.

  57. Dodkong says:

Pens doing well on this PK.

They need to shore that aspect of their game up some.

  58. Jandy says:

    Hey, Hey, Milo :)

  59. JohninOshkosh says:

I still don’t have to rake. Dem Maples hold der leaves till darn near past Halloween.

  60. Jandy says:

    I can’t stand Steigy. I want Mike Lang back…

  61. Bizrow says:

The stuff we use to move fuel keeps breaking

So I just sit and wait and watch the river flow by

Makes you more tired than actually working ;-)

Yup, Milo, hopefully they will get enough gum and tywrap to get the stuff working before next weekend

  62. Jandy says:

    No worries Dodder ;)

  63. theplanisworking says:

Call Shero, see if you can threaten him with the 9 wides. ;)

  64. Jandy says:

Hey, if they wanna pay you for that … ;)

  65. theplanisworking says:

    KUNITZ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Great pass by malkin!

  66. Dodkong says:

After Steigy’s Hobie Baker comment, I lost all respect for him.

And as a result I just could not stand his play by play any more.

  67. Jandy says:

  68. Dodkong says:

    Woohoo, Kunitz!!

  69. Jandy says:

Nice to see a PP goal.

  70. Dodkong says:

Yes, Torts, the Pens will continue to torture your teams even if you are employed by one on the other side of the continent.

    Suck it!!

  71. Jandy says:

    that was classless indeed

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

Exactly what Jandy said. Just smile & take their money.

  73. theplanisworking says:

Why do I get Homer Simpson images knowing you work where you do? ;)

  74. Jandy says:

LMAO that got it right….wah to Torts LOLOL

  75. Dodkong says:

Lucky call of the net off the hooks.

  76. JohninOshkosh says:

I got tickets to Steelers-Packers at Lambeau on Dec. 23. I’m praying for snow. How cool would that be ?!

  77. Jandy says:

    woah !! lol

  78. Jandy says:

    should say that FAN

  79. theplanisworking says:

    What Hobey Baker comment?

  80. Jandy says:

    cooler than cool :)

  81. Dodkong says:

I’m a refugee from the ESPN boards since they went to Facebook posting.

It was a bit more “Wild West” there, to say the least. ;)

  82. Jandy says:

Oh, this place can get wild, trust me.

I love it tho, carry on :D

  83. JohninOshkosh says:

Does anyone still taunt Torts with water bottles ? What a putz that guy is.

  84. Bizrow says:

    Not for long ;-) ;-) ;-)

  85. theplanisworking says:

Maybe he should get together with “Wild Bill” ? ;)

  86. Dodkong says:

That’s an insult to putz’s everywhere.

  87. theplanisworking says:

Congrats on retiring in 2 weeks. :)

  88. Eric Bowser says:

    Vancouver’s defensemen are soft…

  89. Jandy says:

    yup lol

  90. JohninOshkosh says:

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

Awesome. I saw Favre play here once on a Monday night. Kordell beat him. Blind squirrel – acorn.

  92. Jandy says:

hey it’s Bowser…he of the Disney vacation for mid winter :P

  93. Sarah says:

Ok, SOME Penguin D needs to stop maybe one of those SEVEN passes. Good God.

  94. Dodkong says:

    Some excellent passing there.

Canucks a different level of opponent than what the Pens have face recently.

  95. Jandy says:

    give em hell Sarah!

  96. theplanisworking says:

    Pens D looks awful.
    That is all.

  97. theplanisworking says:

  98. theplanisworking says:

Jandy, just read the Hobey Baker comment .
    Steigy is classless.
    Hope he goes soon.

    Bring back Lange.

  99. Jandy says:

That was a nice save by Bortuzzo. Flower owes him a beer

  100. Sarah says:

The puck should never be allowed to go laterally in front of your goaltender. On any odd-man that is the simplest rule. That puck went laterally like 4 times. Inexcusable.

If Errey says anything about MAF on that goal, I’m turning it off.

  101. Jandy says:

    Amen Hipposter.

  102. Sarah says:

well, they’re finally facing a decent puck moving team.

  103. Jandy says:

    time to step it up!

  104. theplanisworking says:

    Very true.

  105. Jandy says:

    Trick or Treat retirement….
    Biz gets the treat :)

  106. Eric Bowser says:

I need to escape soon… first chance was that week (Jan. 19-25)…

  107. Eric Bowser says:

Impressed by the Penguins stupidity to allow concert less than 24 hours prior to an afternoon game.

  108. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s not Zina Garrison, is it ?

  109. Jandy says:

Yinz will enjoy it…hope it’s in the 70’s for ya…

  110. scapper says:

Aw c’mon, that Steigy comment is pretty darn funny. I’m sure he wouldn’t say it again if he could go back, but for a spontaneous comment, it’s no big deal. I could see if it was a reference to Payne Stewart or someone more recent, but we’re talking 1918.

As for Steigy or Lange, while Lange is a deserved HOFer and a civic treasure of sorts, he is past his prime and really difficult to listen to at times. He so needs to stop with all the post-goal sayings, a shtick that was wonderful for a two decades or so but then became cringe-inducing, forced and plain embarrassing. He was replaced for a reason. Ask around.

I do love the guy and his overall body of work. He’s a part of all Pens fans pasts, but if he were put back on the TV broadcasts, I think you’d hear a lot more complaints than you do about the current duo, who I happen to greatly enjoy.

  111. Bizrow says:

    Thanks ;-)

  112. scapper says:

$$$$$$$$$$ trumps good ice every time.

  113. scapper says:

And has anyone ever satisfactorily explained how this new, state-of-the-art arena can have such bad ice? How was that allowed to happen? I’m no engineer, so perhaps you can’t just guarantee great ice in a city as far “south” as Pgh., but in this day and age it seems strange.

  114. theplanisworking says:

I just flipped thru the channels here, and I have a choice of 17 college football games here.

  115. Jandy says:

sorry, scapper, can’t agree with you on Steigy. There’s some things you just don’t joke about. That would have gotten him fired in many places.

And we’ll just have to agree to disagree on Lang. I’d much rather listen to his goal calls then Steigy’s lame “that puck was cleared…almost”

  116. theplanisworking says:

Lets just say I respectfully disagree with every single point of your post, and I will leave it at that.

  117. Jandy says:

Simple. Someone didn’t do their job. Probably an engineer
(Don’t tell 21, Nate, and NMR I said that)

  118. Jandy says:

I don’t care for college football

  119. Dodkong says:

As a side note, I *really* like the Senators alternate jerseys with the big O on the chest.

If I were to get a non-Pittsburgh teams jersey, it’d be that one.

    Simple and classy.

  120. theplanisworking says:

Thats ok, we will forgive you. :)

  121. Jandy says:

LOL thanks. It’s prolly more that I don’t have time for it lol

  122. Jandy says:

    keyword…respectfully :)

  123. Dodkong says:

I dislike it because it lacks respect.

Who knows who might be listening? What if one of Baker’s family members was? Just a matter of respect to not make joviality of the dead and the way they passed on.

  124. Jandy says:

That’s the point. And many places would fire him for that.

  125. Bizrow says:

The Steigerwalds grew up near me and let me tell you from what I’ve heard about them, they are truly pieces of work, and I don’t mean good work….

  126. Eric Bowser says:

    Let’s go Pens!

I want some Japanese at Tsuki in Penn Hills and Jandy might want some Chinese

  127. Jandy says:

    That’s funny Biz…seriously….I never liked Steigy….

  128. theplanisworking says:

Its funny, people who say its ok, would be the first ones screaming if it was a family member of theirs.

  129. Jandy says:

    true, good point

  130. Dodkong says:

John, and his opinions, are even worse in my book.

And that’s about the best thing I can say about the guy so it’s my turn to “leave it at that.”

  131. theplanisworking says:

Biz, you bring up a great point.

John is a bitter, angry old man. He is really out there.

Paul only got his job way back when because John was sports director at KDKA, and was a big deal in Pittsburgh sports media.

    Truly amazing stuff.

  132. Milo Hamilton says:

So we’re thinking here that Geno’s going to get one.

  133. Dodkong says:

I thought Paul was ok as the color guy when he and Lange worked together.

But when Paul moved to play by play, where he should be somewhat more objective, he completely fails at it. He is such a homer and it makes his play by play nearly unbearable.

  134. Jandy says:

    I’m thinkin with ya!

  135. Dodkong says:

I’ll vote Maatta gets the GWG for his first.

  136. theplanisworking says:

    I vote Super Duper.

  137. Jandy says:

that would be sweet…I’ll take either, just so we win :)

  138. Jandy says:

    That would work as

  139. Dodkong says:

    Very close for Geno there

  140. Jandy says:

GrrrRR!! These guys are way to complacent with the puck in our end. Dayum!

  141. Milo Hamilton says:

Paul Martin looks like he missed his wake up call today.

  142. theplanisworking says:

Ladies and Germs, Tool Time with Steigy!

  143. Jandy says:

    him and a few others

  144. Jandy says:

    Don’t insult Tim Allen

  145. theplanisworking says:

    Sorry, Nun. ;)

  146. Dodkong says:

Bortuzzo taking chances there. Lucky it didn’t come back to haunt him.

  147. Milo Hamilton says:

I will say that good teams can make some guys look bad. This is by far the best team we’ve seen so far. Not even close.

  148. Jandy says:

  149. Milo Hamilton says:

    So that’s not a penalty ?

  150. Jandy says:

    Garage league

  151. Dodkong says:

Too much offensive zone time for the C…nevermind.

  152. Jandy says:

CRAP! Don’t clear the puck, that happens

  153. Jandy says:

  154. Milo Hamilton says:

    Olli Maata !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  155. theplanisworking says:

  156. Jandy says:

    Dodders called it

  157. Eric Bowser says:

It was only a MAATTA of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  158. Dodkong says:

    Woohoo, Maatta!!

Welcome to the NHL, young man!

  159. He never did kick the doors down.

  160. Jandy says:

    woop woop!!!!!

  161. theplanisworking says:

Did your kids put you up to that one? ;)

  162. Dodkong says:

Too bad it wasn’t a game winner.

  163. Barb says:

So what did I miss? :)

  164. theplanisworking says:

    Wrong day! ;)

  165. theplanisworking says:

    Wrong day! ;)

  166. theplanisworking says:

    Hi Barb.
    Nothing much………… ;)

  167. Jandy says:

    It aint’ over yet ;)

  168. Barb says:

Eric don’t quit your day job or whoever your writer is needs to be fired. :)

  169. Jandy says:

    Hey Bodacious :)

  170. Barb says:

Hi Hipposter, Jandy and the whole gang.

  171. Jandy says:

Don’t matter what day it is, Maata’s first goal gets woop woop! ;)

  172. Spoken like a true goal tender.

  173. Dodkong says:

I think Maatta goes back to his junior team after game 9

  174. Dodkong says:

The Pens continue to give up open looks like they have been, it’s going to doom them.

Canucks have too good of players to continue to miss like that.

  175. 3 goals today. What’s wrong with old —?

  176. Jandy says:

  177. Jandy says:

  178. Milo Hamilton says:

Here, I posted this yesterday …

Heard Rossi on the radio during lunch & I was very encouraged. He says that in regards to Maata, the Penguins aren’t viewing the 9 game deadline as a deadline at all. All going past the 9th game does is activate his entry level deal & the Pens aren’t concerned about that. It doesn’t get him to free agency any sooner. That doesn’t happen until game 40 and that’s the number they have their eyes on.

They are convinced he’s one of their top 6 defensemen (you’re kidding, better than Bortuzzo & Engelland ?) and their chief concern is can he withstand the rigors of an 82 game season. They’ll have a much better read on that at mid season. Plus there’s the Olympic break to factor in. Doesn’t sound like he’s going anywhere.

  179. Eric Bowser says:

    No… Dejan did…. MAAN crush and all…

  180. theplanisworking says:

I think he stays til game 39, then goes down.

  181. Jandy says:

    More like kid crush ;)

  182. Sarah says:

Love Maata don’t like Bert, but goodness no help for him there. Could someone bother to go with Maata on that rebound or (call me crazy) possibly lift his stick?
Nucks D not much better than ours right now.

    Oh and the Steigerwalds blow.

  183. Sarah says:

  184. theplanisworking says:

    Look, its old 1-3-1. !! ;)

  185. Jandy says:

    Haha!!!! Respectfully indeed ;)

  186. Eric Bowser says:

let’s see if Sutter is worth anything

  187. theplanisworking says:

  188. Jandy says:

  189. Dodkong says:

Torts is ready to chew glass after that call.

  190. Eric Bowser says:

  191. theplanisworking says:

    CRAP !

  192. Barb says:

    Either that or spit nails.

  193. J-girl.

Was cloroxing the house and the sprayer broke. My son went to get a new one. I take a break and find out we’ve given up 3 goals.

  194. theplanisworking says:

    HA !!!

  195. theplanisworking says:

    Great stuff !!!!!!

  196. :D

    At your service, brother Plan.

  197. Jandy says:

we’ve also gotten 3 goals…but mercy, they’ve let the Canucks in our zone too long…

  198. theplanisworking says:

  199. Jandy says:

    we’re going to overtime

  200. Dodkong says:

Why would the Pens keep Maatta up when the precedent they’ve set is to not play young Dmen?

They sent Letang down when he was a rookie? They didn’t stick with Despres two years ago.

Maybe Maatta stays past game 9, but once Letang is back, I don’t think Maatta stays.

  201. Milo Hamilton says:

Just telling you what I heard.

  202. Milo Hamilton says:

And please, never compare Maata with Simon Despres.

  203. Dodkong says:

I understand, not saying you’re wrong or my opinion is right.

    Just my guess work.

Truth is, only Ray Shero knows what will happen.

  204. Eric Bowser says:

    I’m hungry…. let’s get a goal Pens!

  205. Dodkong says:

Despres looks to have the ability, but not the work ethic.

  206. Milo Hamilton says:

Sure does. Makes you scratch your head.

  207. Sarah says:

    Shoot out kids….

  208. Jandy says:

Now shoot out…we’ll see how well MAF can focus

  209. Jandy says:

I’m freakin starving…had breakfast at 8:30 this morning…just a cup of coffee since lol

  210. Dodkong says:

    Sure does.

But until something clicks inside him or someone puts boot to his rear end, you’re right, he doesn’t deserve to be mentioned as one of the promising young Dmen the Pens have.

  211. Barb says:

    I like MAF’s chances.

  212. Jandy says:

I’m a Depres fan, but this is true

  213. Sarah says:

I believe Gs are 80pct plus

  215. Dodkong says:

Why is Steigy surprised at using a Dman? Pens use Letang *all* the time.

  220. Eric Bowser says:

Great game, Fleury was good and Gino wins it!

  221. Dodkong says:

If there’s anything that people cannot fault MAF about is his penalty shoot/shootout ability. He excels at it.

  229. Jandy says:

OK Loonies, I’m out. Great win.
    Enjoy your evening :)

  230. theplanisworking says:

This is my biggest complaint against Fleury.
In a shootout, he HAS to concentrate, and he does well.

Its the other 90% of the time he just melts down.
If he could focus 90% of the time, he would be all-world!!!

DK: Fleury has a skill set that’s beyond ideal for shootouts. This is apples and oranges. He’ll stand up long enough to take away a straight shot, and there aren’t more than 4-5 players in the league capable of dekeing him in tight. But that means very little compared to countless other game situations.

  231. theplanisworking says:

    Bye, Nun!

See you on the Ratbirds thread tomorrow.

  232. Dodkong says:

    Agree with you, Plan.

Why he seems to be unable to translate the SO focus to normal game time is a concern. Fix that, and a lot of his problems are solved.

But that’s easier said than done.

  233. Sarah says:

I’d caution against comparing shootout to the other patterns that happen in a game.

I’m ancient, slow and arthritic, and it’s hard to beat me in a SO. Even when I give away 20-plus years.

It’s just a very individual skill, with no D and no O so completely unlike other scenarios … and hard to draw conclusions vs. the rest of the goalies’ strengths and weaknesses.

    I woke the bear!

    RUN !!!!!!!
