Podcast: Tomlin, Heyward, Maatta, more

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Today’s TribLIVE Radio show featured special guest Cam Heyward, the Steelers’ most improved player. Also, I discussed the Penguins’ opener with Trib beat man Josh Yohe and introduced @SuckMeter.

Here’s video of the opening rant on Mike Tomlin, featuring a story from London I’m sharing for the first time …

Thanks to all who called and emailed! Lots of fun with this one.

  1. That monologue was awesome. I kinda get the feeling that whatever goes wrong is never that guy’s fault.

    DK: Certainly not clock management.

  2. Tomlin is just as big a joke as everyother COACH. His rants & lame #Same Bleep different day quote unquote #Excuses are as boring as the day is long. Raise your hand if you thought taking Team over to LONDON last second was stuff of #Wile E. Coyote stuff #ACME. 2-4 team in a overall BAD NFL league. where there are couple GOOD teams & some bad/avg. teams & then rest of league is on par w/ #BigLEast football.
Damn right Tomlin & Rooney’s should be Darn glad #Buctober took place. Any other city the Fans/Media would RIP the entire organization a new one… Steelers get TOO many passes. Bad drafts Bad scouting Last significant FA signingwas Ryan Clark who WON”T be back next season cause he’s already got 1 foot in suit/tie & in the door @ #ESPN…

  3. Its time COLBERT step down His wrecklessness w/ Money$ & salary cap, leaves Steelers S.O.L. 13 years he’s become Stale & whomever made final call on Mike Adams should have been already fired. And Continually having to REstructure contracts & further put off paying $ down the road, like politicians Sooner or later gotta pay it…

    THERE is that better

  5. I never found Perry the Platypus disturbing or intimidating.

Then a certain columnist/blogger/radio host wore that shirt.

    DK: Check with Doofenshmirtz.

  6. Oh my.
Is “Love My Way” by the Psychedelic Furs your ring tone, DK?

    Nice. +1

  7. Regarding the team’s travel plans to London, shouldn’t that be the call of the GM? Or at the very least shouldn’t he be involved in the decision making —and should have said that they should have went over earlier?

    • I can’t speak for the GM or coach’s decision for the Steelers, but I know it was Harbaugh’s decision for the 49ers.

They played, and beat Houston, in Houston and the left right from there.

I believe his first year in coaching, he also kept the team in Ohio to play back to back east coast games.

      Love that guy……

  8. Actually, good call DK, just got to listen before I head out of work.

    Two questions:

    1. What was Cowher’s record again after a 10-point lead? Clock management

    2. Did you wear that shirt to the Steelers facility?

From your discription, the dude’s ego needs checked. I understand that some coach’s don’t like the press conferences and interviews, but he can at least show you guys some respect and understanding.

Answer the questions, move on…hell, answer em like Belechick does, who cares?

  9. Loved the opening segment… been feeling that way about Tomlin for a long time.

    And Perry the platypus rules!

  10. DK – Interesting rant about Mike Tomlin on the podcast.
I kind of had an idea that this was how Tomlin was acting these days, but I didn’t think it was to that point.
The biggest problem with this whole scenario is the fact that the media is the ears and voice of the fans.
As we all know….The Steelers have millions of faithful followers.
If he’s acting that way to you guys, he’s indirectly acting that way to the fans (who follow the media for team information).
    That is not good business.

As for Tomlin learning from a losing season….(It’s not the way I want it….But) I’m still quite sure that will be the outcome in late December.

    • Cowher could get pretty snippy, especially when they lost.

I don’t think it’s a one way street. I always thought Tom Donahoe got better coverage from the media because he appeared to be more accessible. And I thought he was a snake.

    • Daq, lets face it………. coaches arent warm and fuzzy people. See Bellicheat, Bill.

But I think that an advesarial relationship with the media isnt good either. If a coach doesnt like answering questions, maybe he needs to get on with his lifes work? Or we can have 32 Bellicheats.

      • I would agree that the vast majority of NFL head coaches are cranky guys.
Tomlin seems to have gotten worse with time….And probably losses.

  11. it’s one man’s word. when you say you don’t take it personally, it sounds as if you are taking it personally.
