He also appears on WPXI-TV's 'Subway Final Word’ and hosts a weekly show on TribLIVE Radio. For 2011, he was named one of the country's top four columnists by the AP Sports Editors. For 2013, he was named the state's top columnist by the Keystone Press Awards and top columnist in Western Pennsylvania by the Golden Quills.

  1. Dave G says:

    Dejan Kovacevic:
“Fleury will have two weeks and change to rest up and recover in February. Don’t want to sound mean here, but he can have the greatest regular season in the world, and Team Canada won’t be taking him to Sochi after his recent performances in the playoffs. Too big a risk.”

Then why should the Pens believe in him?

  2. Milo Hamilton says:

Reason #2 why this Patrick Roy thing will never ever work.

  3. Bizrow says:

IMO Colorado really strengthened themselves by stealing Talbot from the Flyers

You had to know Wandy would pick up his option.

Liked what I heard about the PBC tendering AJ, its a gamble, but what isn’t when you throw around monopoly money?

  4. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Anyone see that Max Talbot was traded to the Avs yesterday?

  5. JohninOshkosh says:

Wonder if the Pens are spent a bit after the masterpiece the other night ?

  6. Bizrow says:

    See above, Ryan

I think Dejan was noting you give up character and intangibles for pretty much a goon.

But not putting any words into his mouth

    Its the Flyers….

  7. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

Can someone please explain the +/- to me please?

Is it better to be is better to be positive or negative. I assume positive.

  8. Eric Bowser says:

You got it, the higher the + number, the bettter.

If you are on the ice when the team scores a goal at even-strength or short-handed, you get a plus.

If you are on the ice when the opposition scores a goal at even-strength or short-handed, you get a minus.

  9. Eric Bowser says:

No way tonight’s game can match the Boston game as that was two good teams playing as if it was June. I’m expecting a so-so game for both teams.

  10. Eric Bowser says:

They have no choice but to believe in him.

  11. Eric Bowser says:

Just got home, what happened now?

  12. Eric Bowser says:

Love the deal for the Avs….. Downie is a joke, talent with a 10 cent brain.

  13. Nor Cal Stlrfanrtc (Ryan) says:

    Wow. That’s easy enough.

    Kind of a weird stat.

    Thanks Eric.

  14. JohninOshkosh says:

It’s kinda like hockey’s version of WAR. It tries to evaluate a player’s value while the player is on the ice.

  15. Friday night. Probably no Jandy until the Shelby gets waxed.

Barb, Sarah and the crew should be in shortly.

Time to break out the 1-3-1 chants.

    BTW, Eric. What is Sid’s +/- ?

I’ll bet it’s not as high as his BABIP

  16. toochca says:

But it is higher than his xFIP!!

  17. Dave G says:

Kunitz leads the team with +11. Niskanen is a +10

  18. Eric Bowser says:

    63.9% of Malkin’s 5on5 shifts are in the offensive zone… Crosby’s 47.9%

  19. Eric Bowser says:

    What the… a PP goal.

Malkin along way to allow Sid to win his own faceoff, puck back to Martin at the point and Kunitz deflects the shot behind Bobrovsky.

  20. toochca says:

A what?! Is that a new term? :D

  21. Sarah says:

Another new term appears to be “puck support” coming out of the D zone.
    Who are these guys?

  22. Eric Bowser says:

    Since it is stats night….

Matt Niskanen 7th among NHL defenseman with 14 team goals scored while 5on5.

  23. Eric Bowser says:

    Fleury….. star performance in 1st

  24. Jandy says:

The Shelby did NOT get waxed tonight :D

Hubby has a migraine, I was taking care of the dogs and him of course.

I’m glad someone misses me !

  25. Jandy says:

    Eric, how is Perry tonight?

  26. Jandy says:

    I mean, really! :)

  27. theplanisworking says:

Jandy, I sent you an e-mail.
Don’t know if you got it or no…..

  28. Jandy says:

Great way to put it, Oshie

  29. Mercy. Seems high.

    Better than Wins Above Replacement.

  30. Jandy says:

I will go look, haven’t looked at it since early today.

Good to see you here, Hipposter :)

  31. Jandy says:

  32. Eric Bowser says:

Of course….. now Sutter is on fire….. I have a way with criticism….

  33. Jandy says:

What the heck has gotten into Sutter? :)

  34. Eric Bowser says:

only vomited 10 times, made it to lunch at school today… longest he’s lasted in two weeks.

  35. I think you need to change that e-mail address. What if your grandkids want to e-mail you?

    “Mommy, what’s gramma’s e-mail address?”

“Oh, never mind. Do your homework. Or water the dog.”

Make it or something with that descriptor of a female dog our of it.

  36. “Out” of it.

    Daggum Jandy typoes.

  37. Eric Bowser says:

    holy smokes…. another PP goal.

  38. theplanisworking says:

Cant stay long……….. upstairs apartment tenants washer flooded, I am trying to dry out……. bad flooding in my place. I am here just for a bit.

  39. BillyBaduka says:

I believe these things may be the results of adjustments in strategy and system… Nah couldn’t be. Players musta decided to just start playing different. ;)

  40. Jandy says:

Progess is good! Still prayin for the lil man :)

  41. Jandy says:

I’ma play the lottery tomorrow LOL

  42. Jandy says:

    instant change ;)

  43. JohninOshkosh says:

I must have missed this. Hope the big guy gets better soon.

  44. Jandy says:

I will encourage my grand kids to do so , Spunky LOL! They will hear and see much worse than that at school!

and love your Jandy typos, they’re better than mine LOL

  45. Jandy says:

    Megna!!! The rout is on!!!

  46. Jandy says:

Stick around a bit with us, Hipposter. Got a de-humidifier?

  47. Jandy says:

3 goals in 4:24…when’s the last time that happened for us???

  48. BillyBaduka says:

Megna! Amazing what a right handed shot on a team can do on the left side. Although that net was wide open.

  49. Eric Bowser says:

    John, thanks.

He’s been going through a vomiting bout for about 18 months and we don’t know why. First thought it was related to his migraines but he doesn’t get them all that much anymore since he’s on meds.

Unfortunately the last month has increased in episodes and he’s missing a lot of school, been to Children’s hospital three times in a week’s span because of it.

  50. Jandy says:

Biz, I hope day 1 of retirement was a good one! :)

I had someone check in from Mt. Joy the other day. Don’t know if you saw it?

  51. Jandy says:

yeah, someone was out to dinner.

  52. Eric Bowser says:

    Fleury… Fleury… Fleury…

  53. BillyBaduka says:

I hadn’t seen that either. Hope he is better soon.

  54. theplanisworking says:

Nope, mops and buckets and fans.
Gotta go. Might be here later, but after that crap earlier today……….. meh.

  55. Sarah says:

Ugh Letang. So much for the donut.

  56. Jandy says:

he has such a tough time holding onto shut outs lol

  57. Jandy says:

go for now, but you better get your purple butt back here later on ;)

  58. Jandy says:

LOL what do you want Sarah, perfection? ;)

  59. Jandy says:

    guys, Perry is a trooper.
He must take after his mother ;)

  60. JohninOshkosh says:

    Oh dear
Have they suggested severe motion sickness? Read a piece on Sanjay Gupta. He gets headaches, vertigo ., nausea, etc simply by vehicle motion.

Anyway, hope they get a handle on it.

  61. Sarah says:

Nope just some semblance of attention span from Letang. Oy.

  62. Jandy says:

he’s been better. But yeah…I know what you mean…

  63. Eric Bowser says:

    Jandy – yes he does… he’s clumsy… LOL

  64. Eric Bowser says:

Thanks, one of these days, we’ll figure it out.

  65. Jandy says:

Eric, LOL! I won’t tell your better half you said that…but actually, with the abuse you take here, he surely take after you ;)

  66. Jandy says:

  67. Jandy says:

    Niskie getting frisky!

  68. Eric Bowser says:

I don’t know how this is but Pens getting outplayed and lead 4-1

  69. Jandy says:

    Goaltender makes the difference

  70. Eric Bowser says:

    Goaltending and PP showing up..

  71. Jandy says:

    it’s about time

  72. Jandy says:

    Geno…Finally :)

  73. Eric Bowser says:

    cross-bar, post….. ugh

  74. Jandy says:

    well that figures.

  75. Sarah says:

It’s 7-0 in Philly and Emery left the net to beat on Holtby. Good lord the Flyers suck.

  76. Jandy says:

lol that tickles my funny bone…

  77. Eric Bowser says:

Thank Fleury… Pens didn’t really manage the puck all that good.

  78. Lad 9 says:

Eric I was just catching up and I read about Perry. Had the exact same thing happen with my son although I am pretty sure mine was older than yours. No one could figure it out until I took him to a GI doc at the Cleveland Clinic and they diagnosed something called Rumination Syndrome. Would be happy to talk with you about it. My email is

  79. Eric Bowser says:

    Thanks, you’ve got mail.

  80. Pucknutz says:

The Flower does look much “calmer” or “quiet” as Jay C says.
Maybe that shrink stuff works! lol

  81. JohninOshkosh says:

Just watched video of it and what an embarrassment in Philly. Shanny gonna be busy with that one. They just don’t get in Philly. My guy Coatesey (#sarcasm), was saying how this will light a fire under them and how this was all for the next game. Ugh.

Some of us primates have evolved to realize that quality hockey players, and not thuggery, is what is needed to “light the fire.”

  82. Jason81 says:

    1975 Forever!!!!!

  83. Lad 9 says:

    You too

  84. twentytwo22 says:

    I hate hockey interlopers.

There are some fights you can’t run away from. When one is RSVP’d in your name you have two choices fight and do your best or turtle like a coward. Holtby finished better than he started once his instincts kicked in. Assault, my ass.

  85. twentytwo22 says:

I find two men fighting inspiring. A man standing up for himself, for his teammates, for his team. The whole thing is liberating. Socialists hate two men fighting. Men with the sense to fight, fight tyranny. It’s the most evolved that human beings can get. People who seek to dull a man’s sense to fight are satanic.

  86. Eric Bowser says:

I have no problem with boxing or MMA as that’s the point of the sport to fight the other man but fighting has absolutely nothing to do with scoring a goal, making a legal check, floating a pass, or making a save.

We’re on total opposite ends of the spectrum on this one.

I think Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren went to his team lockerroom after second period and more or less demanded his players to go out there in the third period and make the Capitals pay with their fists.

Sad that teams keep pushing Steve Downie to be the on the fringe lunatic and last night, he paid the price with a hard left by Aaron Volpatti to his left eye socket that resulted him being transported to the hospital in an ambulance.

Downie can play the game, if teams would just recognize it and work on his on the fringe stupidity like the Pens did with Matt Cooke, I think he could be reformed into a quality second line right wing.

  87. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hey 22:

Good to see you. You have always been very consistent with your position on this. Can’t say I agree with a single thing you said, but I can appreciate hyperbole to make a point.

Oh, and I am a huge boxing fan. Follow it religiously.

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

Sending out an APB for Bob Hasis. I’ve got the TJ game next week.

  89. Jim S. says:

Pitt beat Slippery Rock 96-60 in exhibition hoops last night. Take that, Matt Adams!

  90. Jim S. says:

It’s the signature Philly move. They and their fans are happier thinking they are the toughest team around than actually winning. Sounds crazy, but I think that might be true. Been watching it for over 35 years.

  91. Jim S. says:

“Yeah, but we win most of the fights.”

    – Every Flyers fan, ever

  92. UK beat Transylvania last night, Jim. Something ridiculous about that, since we just passed Hallowed Eve.

Breaks their losing streak. Their last game was that loss to RMU.

  93. Milo Hamilton says:

I know I’m a little late to the party on this but I just now saw the video of The Flyers being the Flyers.

First & foremost, the NHL needs to make Ray Emery pee in a cup immediately. And I’m not for one second kidding about that.

Secondly, about the Flyers. You can talk about Paul Holmgren & Craig Berube all you want, but who keeps hiring these slugs ? Ed Snider obviously wants this. He’s had plenty of opportunities over the years to make a clean break from the Flyers mentality & he never ever does. Every time he removes Bobby Clarke he replaces him with Holmgren and vice versa. Over and over again, same thing for 30 years. And the end result ? Embarrassing incidents like this and no Stanley Cups.

As a Penguins fan I hope Snider never changes. But who am I to tell him how to run his business ? :)

  94. theplanisworking says:

100% agreed. Snider has a history of being a bully, and an ass. In all aspects of his life. That, more than anything, is the reason things wont ever change. This year may be a Washington Capitals 1973 type of year for them.

Do you have time for a quick report about last night’s game before I have to go?

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

It was a great game, especially from my perspective. Highlands did a great job limiting Hooker (he’s going to The Ohio State University). He only touched the ball 4 times, 2 catches & 1 TD. New Castle led 6-0 but Highlands scored on their next possession & led the whole way. They had to hold off a furious New Castle rally at the end to win 24-19. As far as the crowd goes we estimated New Castle brought about 200 people. Kinda disappointing we thought.

  96. theplanisworking says:

Wow. Sounds like it was good. Very disappointed in the turnout. State basketball semis against Lower Merion, there were over 1500 fans that made the trip over to Williamsport.

Thanks for the update. You are truly the voice of the voiceless. :)

  97. Milo Hamilton says:

Thanks Plan. Hope everything’s all dried out.

  98. james thompson says:

You have all, naturally, heard by this time about Pascual Dupuis pulling out his tooth during the Pens/Bruins game and that Pascual has since said that this was overblown since such injuries are all too common in hockey and the odds of losing teeth in games is greater than in other sports and there’s nothing much that can be done about that, although you wish it could be different.

  99. Nancy52 says:

If you haven’t seen it yet, DK wrote a special Saturday column about Bettman and
the most recent events…Scott, Varlomov and last night in Philly. Good stuff!!!

  100. james thompson says:

The Flyers have won only 2 lousy games so far and are dead last in their division and are going nowhere fast, having lost 7-0 to the Washington Capitals last night. They fired their coach but that’s done nothing for them, nor is it about to, apparently, so it’s best not to dwell on that mess of a hockey team this season.

  101. james thompson says:

The Flyers know that they’re a mess and that fighting’s the only way they can stick it to their rivals. And so, until the NHL actually gets around to outlawing the practice, well, we will all continue to expect this from time to time.

  102. james thompson says:

    M. A. Fleury was a virtual one man show in the September opener as he won his 250th, a shutout. And then, he had 37 saves in last night’s rout of the Blue Jackets. And so, with the rookie Jeff Tagdef sustaining two of the Pens’ 4 losses without a win, who else do they have?
