  2. If I were Columbus, I’d pour a thousand shots on this rookie goalie of the Pens.

Can Pens win on the road with this kind of backup goaltending? Still a little surprised at Mr. Shero’s inactivity toward filling the pipes.

    • They don’t have the salary cap space… which I blame Shero.

      • They have the space because of the number of guys on the injured list, big salaries like Neal and Scudari and Volkun. Their salaries don’t count against salary cap.

I have no inclination to blame Shero———I’m sure he can and will eventually navigate around the Cap. He’s is happy where he is.

I’m just surprised he has yet to pull the trigger. Maybe he knows what he is doing though, because Fleury is playing with more confidence than I have ever seen him!

      • 2 things that many people either dont know about the salary cap, or dont wamt to admit…………………..

        1) Almost every team, and especially the contendint teams, are up against the cap this year. This was a concern in the CBA negotiations last year.

        2) The cap is supposed to, again supposed to, go up 10-15 million dollars next year. We will see about that. So many GM’s only had to navigate the cap this year, then they could reshape the rosters next year.

With all the talent on the Penguins roster, it is very difficult to blame him for the cap issues. I understand he is the GM, but there are only so many dollars to keep talent. The alternative is to be the Blue Jackets.

        • Blame for Shero is because of the poor draft and development program he’s running. I don’t think Dupuis and Kunitz are going to be worth the deals they got after this year.

          • Eric, you do realize when a Team is successful every year, they draft in low positions? You do realize there are some good rookies and 2nd year players on the big club this year?

I blame Shero for all the trades the past 2 years that sent players and draft picks away.

Also, are hockey contracts guaranteed like baseball contracts? Or are they like the NFL’s?

          • I think the contract for Kunitz is more dangerous than Duper’s and Letang’s. However, I like all three, for this year especially.

The Cap goes up significantly next year, and all 3 contracts will fit more easily.

I still think this is a Championship club, and I have no problem with all three contracts. They are all three essential players and I do not think Letang has yet to peak.

        • Very wise, Mr. Paul Bunyan!

I’m not yet ready to jettison anyone from this roster. I have no problems with Shero’s Cap management thus far.

    • In fairness Zat should be 1-1. But yes, no cap space….

  3. I’m not a big fan of back-to-back games…. this would be why… the skating in this game is way below par.

    • It may be the back-to-back . . . . . . or it may be that Penguins are collapsing back to protect the rookie goaltender——and only breaking the zone when they are SURE that puck is under control. That slows everything down for Pens, but probably is the right way to play tonight sans Fleury.

  4. I was just getting ready to say I don’t like having Martin out on the Power Play at the same time as Kris Letang——I would prefer another goal scorer.

Then Martin made that beautiful pass to Geno in the slot. Malkin should have put that in.

  5. We sure had our chances in the first period. I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt u

  6. Im glad we went with Zatkoff. He’s got to get the work eventually. He’s no Fleury but who is?

  7. Goal! 1-0 good guys!

  8. Relieved….. Perry didn’t have any vomiting, no stomach pain, no nausea, and no headaches. This is the first day with not one of those symptoms… in months, honestly can’t remember the last time.

And now Engelland scores thanks to Jeffrey work along boards.

  9. I like it when Sid and Geno are on opposite sides on the Power Play.

Great chance by Sid. Jackets’ goalie is coming up big.

  10. 10 shots by Blue Jackets after 2 periods.

Who says Dan Bylsma can’t get his boys to play stiffling D?!

Pens are working their tails off to keep that puck from reaching the rook goalie.

    Fire Dan Bylsma!!

  11. Hey Oshkosh b’Gosh!

I know you are not here, since you are at the Milwaukee Bucks home opener tonight. Yet in case you check in . . . .

I wanted you to know that I am thinking of you and happy for you. I’m watching the game between Penguin stoppages. I’m also looking for someone in the stands wearing a Pirate jersey.

I like Sanders, and Butler, Mayo, and Neal can sometimes be outstanding (and sometimes not there!). I like how Wolters moves the ball and handles himself. However, I don’t think too much of Larry Drew as a coach.

Looks like a downpayment on Wiggins or Jabari Parker! But I hope the Bucks win every game you attend!

  12. Wow! All of a sudden in the 3rd period, Penguins have quit packing the front of the net in front of the rook.

If they keep this up, the Blue Jackets will have a couple of goals soon.

  13. So, a shutoff for Zatkoff? Must be due to the old 1-3-1.

  14. Had internet problems all evening. Go figure…

  15. I’m happy for Zats :)

  16. Solid team victory, 18-save shutout for Zatkoff

  17. I just saw the Philly postgame show for the Sixers and Flyers combined.
They said no suspensions will be coming for the brawl with the Caps.

    Can this possibly be true?
