  1. JohninOshkosh says:

Texas Tech’s lone loss came at Alabama in the Big 12/SEC challenge. Texas Tech lost to Pittsburgh in the semi’s of this tournament a few years back.

Former Kentucky Wildcat coach Tubby Smith is the Red Raiders head coach. Guard Jamal Williams, Jr. will be playing in his hometown. Always need to watch out for those kids who are excited to have a bunch of family and friends in the house.

  2. JohninOshkosh says:

    Oh, and Fire Dixon!!!

  3. Jim S. says:

Can’t wait to see what sort of club Coach Knight … err, umm … the other Coach Knight …. I mean, Coach Smith puts on the floor for TX Tech.

  4. JRay3 says:

Taking a look at some early season computer ranking and there are a couple that have this Panthers squad very highly rated.

Sagarin has Pitt #9 in his power ratings index, while Pomeroy has the Panthers #9 as well with an offensive efficiency rating of #17 and defensively #11. SOS sits at 336 but should get its first jump over the next two days.

With the new rules on hand checking and how fouls will be called, think it will be a benefit for the Panthers to have to incorporate a little more zone into the defense at times especially considering this maybe be one of Dixon’s most athletic teams.

Should get a little better gauge on this year’s team over the next two nights, looking forward to it as I believe Pitt may end up a bit better than predicted especially given the way some of the supposed ACC powers have looked early on.

  5. Arriba Wilver says:

Really enjoy your Pitt updates, JRay. (And they put Drew’s SEC ones to shame). ;-)

    DK: Seconded.

  6. Johnnie Ray III,

How can Pitt be #9 in Sagarin rankings when all they have played is Woodland Hills JVs?

    I HATE Jamie’s early schedules!!

Tubby Smith is a REAL coach, even if these kids aren’t his signees. Let’s talk hopes & dreams after tonight.

  7. JRay3 says:

Vegas has Pitt favored by 11 tonight, Coach Smith is going to have his hands full tonight.

UNC lost to Belmont, BC has lost to everybody, Maryland lost to Oregon St., ND lost to Indiana St., NC St lost to NC Central, Va Tech lost USC Upstate (who?), Duke beat a 1-4 Vermont team by 1 point and this is just in the ACC, I’m not even including the other power conferences.

I could point to a lot of big schools that have lost to inferior opponents, however Pitt is not one of them. Tonight they play a Big 12 school, tomorrow most likely a Pac 12 school, I will take my chances with this Pitt team. They still have Cinci and Penn St. which Pitt had no choice in who they played in the ACC/Big Ten challenge.

Next year Pitt goes to Maui with Arizona, SD St, Missouri, Purdue, BYU. Some of the scheduling is made for TV, some of it arranged challenges and pre-season tournaments. I read a story last year that CBS tried to help schedule a home and home between Pitt and Duke when Pitt was in the Big East and coming off of that epic game at MSG where Fields won it at the buzzer but Duke would have no part.

And Fresno St is not Woodland Hills JV. After this tournament I will be more than happy to talk, fully expect Pitt to add another early season tournament trophy to its case, which Jamie Dixon a great coach in his own right has won his fair share of.

  8. JohninOshkosh says:

Minnesota and Syracuse still playing in Maui. Looks like we’ll miss the beginning of the game in Brooklyn.

  9. JohninOshkosh says:

Richard Pitino looks exactly like his father.

  10. JohninOshkosh says:

Not a lot of famous alums from Texas Tech. I’ll have to go with John Denver and Natalie Maines as the biggest entertainer alums.

This game in Maui will not end.

  11. JohninOshkosh says:

Pittsburgh in the zone. A glacial 10-4 at 13:00 point. If Patterson continues to hit threes, teams will have to respect that opening things for Zanna.

  12. JRay3 says:

Solid start for Panthers in opening eight minutes building early 14-4 lead, winning on the boards, forcing turnovers and holding Tech to 25% shooting early on.

Really enjoy watching these young Panthers run the floor, nice to see them open it up.

  13. JohninOshkosh says:

I’ll withhold judgment on the hand checking calls for a time. Lets see if it increases scoring. But, it takes physicality out of the game. I personally think man to man defense is the essence of the sport but teams are forced to play zones to avoid the calls. Early calls on soft touches in this game.

  14. JRay3 says:

Get a TO Tubby, Pitt lighting it up….19-6!

  15. JRay3 says:

There is not a spot on the floor that Durand Johnson thinks is outside of his range, pure shooter.

  16. JohninOshkosh says:

Liked what I’ve seen from Artis and Robinson this season. TT with the timeout. 19-6 Pitt.

  17. JRay3 says:

Pitt running Tech out of the gym, as Tubby has to use another TO….27-8 Panthers in a dominant first 13 minutes tonight.

  18. theplanisworking says:

    Thanks for these, JRay.

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

Texas Tech can’t handle Patterson at all. 27-8 and the crisis timeout for the Red Raiders.

  20. theplanisworking says:

Man, to think I was wasting time over on the pens thread.

    Pitt looking good.
    Great spacing.
    Great passing.
    Great 3 point shooting.

This is going about as well as Dixon could have expected.

  21. JohninOshkosh says:

Pitt up by 23 with 3:50 to go in the half! Are these the Panthers or home team Nets playing on the Barclays court ?

  22. JRay3 says:

Meanwhile #7 Ohio St struggling with Wyoming and #3 Kentucky losing to Cleveland State by 9 with 14 minutes left.

Maybe one of the most complete halves of basketball a Pitt team has put together.

  23. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m used to watching NBA. Wright would not have been called for a carry in the Association with that pretty move.

  24. Arriba Wilver says:

    41-18 at the half. Whew!

  25. theplanisworking says:

Other than a few sloppy turnovers, that might have been the best half of basketball Pitt has played in a long, long time.

The 3 point shooting has been great.
Being Pitt doesnt have a dominant inside game, hitting 3′s will open things up.
Looking good, Louis, looking good. :)

  26. JohninOshkosh says:

41-18 Pitt at the intermission. Solid defensive effort. 12+ turnovers by Tech. Patterson with a wonderful half. Pitt hitting the three pointers and controlling the boards. Recipe for a blowout.

  27. JRay3 says:

At the half Pitt holds a 23 point lead at 41-18, dominating both ends of the court.

    Some halftime numbers:

    Rebounds- Pitt 15, TT 9
    Turnovers- Pitt 3, TT 9
    FG %- Pitt 46%, TT 26%
    FT %- Pitt 85% on 11-13, TT 80% on just 4-5

This has the look of one of Pitt’s better shooting teams and they continue to run one of the most efficient offense’s in the country.

  28. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1

  29. JohninOshkosh says:

I’ll have to DVR the second half as kiddos need help with their math. My daughter is in first grade and already they have them working on rudimentary algebraic thinking. Guess the Pacific Rim has folks scared!

Take it home guys. I’ll be sure to look at your comments after I watch the second half later.

  30. JRay3 says:

Nice possession after the TO by Coach Dixon as Young drives to the lane for easy two, steal and Wright than finishes as Pitt quickly answers with four to halt the Tech 7-2 run.

  31. JRay3 says:

And I was beginning to think it was just my second and third graders learning how to crack codes with their math teachings at an early age. Enjoy the homework, hopefully Pitt coasts to win #5 on the season.

  32. theplanisworking says:

Dixon has done a much better job with the use of timeouts thru the years.
He has a good pulse on a game for when to use them.

  33. Arriba Wilver says:

From this very unsophisticated view, Robinson looks way better than last year. Much more confident.

  34. JRay3 says:

Really good observation, he seems to try and squash momentum when he senses the opposition maybe gaining some.

I also think he does a very nice job of drawing up offensive sets out of a timeout as well.

  35. JRay3 says:

Confident, great command and control, even looks to have worked on his shot a bit. Starts with PG play and he has the look of a very good one.

  36. theplanisworking says:

Wait til Sheldon Jeter gets here next year.
You want to talk about an inside-outside combo………….

  37. Milo Hamilton says:

    Bigger & stronger too.

  38. JRay3 says:

What a night the senior Patterson is having- 23 points a career high, 4 assists, 4 steals and a block. Bringing all around game this evening.

Just another player that is demonstrating the ability that Coach Dixon has in developing and improving players.

  39. theplanisworking says:

Another thing that is going to bear well for Pitt this year, is the great transition D. Opponents wont get many freebies due to Pitt lollygagging it back on D. They will have to earn their points against the Panthers.

  40. 21sthebest says:

I’d gladly help you out John. I love teaching math!

Btw, Richard Pitino used to be an assistant at Duquesne.

  41. Milo Hamilton says:

    Brandon Sutter time ?

  42. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ll put a Pitt comment next door just to make it even. :)

  43. Lad 9 says:

Really like this team. They just lack the big banger in the middle that might make them susceptible to a team with a big man like McGarry from Michigan. Lot of fun to watch.

  44. theplanisworking says:

    :D

Say something about firing Dixon……….. ;)

  45. theplanisworking says:

Add to that this might be Pitt’s best shooting team in a long time.
    Looking good so far.

  46. JRay3 says:

They are going to be fun to watch, the commentators were saying many maybe sleeping on this squad although they are starting to receive votes in the polls.

What I have seen through the first five games has me thinking this could be a very sneaky surprising team, they are very good on both sides of the court, Dixon is letting them open it up and play a bit and they bring the trademark Pitt tenacity.

I also like how they have jumped on the opposition early in all of their games to this point, have not seen a slow start yet.

  47. DemonDachshund says:

Really a shame that Adams didn’t stick around this year… This team is looking much stronger than I expected.

Don’t get me wrong, he definitely made the right choice to go pro. But the one thing this team is clearly lacking is depth in the middle, and with him I could see a deep tournament run. Unless Zanna finds consistency and can stay out of foul trouble every night, I see a ceiling of Sweet Sixteen at best. Not that there anything bad about that, but just once I want to see them in a Final Four.

  48. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++

  49. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++

  50. JRay3 says:

A 23 point thrashing of a Big 12 school to improve to 5-0 and Pitt advances to the Legends Classic Final tomorrow night versus the winner of Stanford and Houston.

  51. theplanisworking says:

Crosby tied the Pens game with .2, yes 0.2 seconds left!!!!!!!!!!

    On to overtime !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. theplanisworking says:

    Great game from Pitt tonight.
Transition D and great shooting ruled the day.

    This team is very underrated.
If they stay healthy, they can make some noise this year.
    Then next year, look out.

  53. Drew71 says:

    Careful what you Second.

  54. Pitt has won 6 straight basketball games mostly over nobody, and this will likely continue until mid season. Meanwhile, the Pens lose 4-3 in overtime to Boston since they can’t seem to score at vital times. Now hopefully, the Steelers will beat the Ravens on Thanksgiving night so it’ll all be well worth it in the end.
