  1. Drew71 says:

    Ah. That’s better.

    Auburn or Missouri?

  2. Big letdown for Auburn. Missu wins it.

  3. Kevin says:

go penguins! beat those dam bbb’s.

  4. theplanisworking says:

SHOOT THE PUCK!!! (Not into Rask’s chest!!)

  5. Drew71 says:

That would be my bet, Luck. Then the BIG questions of the day…

    1. OSU offense vs MSU defense. When great O faces great D, I’ve historically gone with the D. Penn State – Miami, Jimmy Johnson’s worst memory (he claims); Ohio State – Miami (I see a losing trend). But the game has changed. We’ll see. I will go against my Pick D tendency and predict OSU.

    2. If MSU pulls it off, Missouri to the championship? Unlike Auburn, Missouri didn’t beat (or play) Alabama. But Many will say that Alabama is the clear #2 team by quality. I don’t. I think Alabama, a very good team was floating on the air in their sails from the last two seasons. The Tide gets too much of the benefit of the doubt. I think Missouri-Alabama is a pick em game on a neutral field. So if MSU and Missouri wins, the BCS championship should be FSU-Missouri. With Saban whining. ESPECIALLY when FSU mops up Missouri…he’ll be “shoulda been us” insufferable then.

Sadly the BCS championship game may be a letdown after all this. So much great football this and last week. And FSU should crush anyone standing. After my anti-Tide diatribe, this may surprise: I think Alabama would give em the best game just because of their defense. But not to the point that I’d seriously consider picking the Tide.

  6. Zdeno Chara = Fezik

    “Anybody wanna doughnut?”

“Sleep well and dream of large women!” said the masked man.

  7. theplanisworking says:

    Thanks, Reverend.

This football “championship Saturday” is becoming like basketball conference tournaments…………. the lower seeds pull many upsets.

Good luck again to your Brutuses……….. based on history, they are gonna need it.

  8. JohninOshkosh says:

    Robin Wright !

  9. Everyone says Sparty’s defense can stop their offense. Time will tell. Milo is a Buckeye fan, too. Maybe the 2 of us can bring it home.

  10. theplanisworking says:

    Holy crap!

What an awesome ending to the Colorado-Kansas bb game.
35-foot shot for 3 at the buzzer.

  11. Sarah says:

    Hey Peeps!

  12. theplanisworking says:

    You mean Penguins? ;)

  13. Barb says:

    Right back at ya Sarah!

  14. theplanisworking says:

    Barb is here too!

Feels like being home for the holidays…..

  15. Barb says:

Yup of course I am not ready for Christmas at all.

  16. theplanisworking says:

I cant understand why? After all, Christmas has been in the stores since Columbus Day….. :(

I try not to get too caught up in the silliness.
Always love a good Christmas cartoon on TV however……. :)

  17. JohninOshkosh says:

    The boys are testy early.

  18. Barb says:

Yes and Brooks lowered the boom!

  19. theplanisworking says:

    BOOM !

  20. JohninOshkosh says:

Does anyone know when the Olympic rosters are announced ?

  21. JohninOshkosh says:

Crosby is an absolute joy to watch!

  22. Sarah says:

I am a bit late to the party on our DK’s Letang interview but I had a couple of thoughts…apologies if they have been played out already…..
First….yikes, he does seem in a bit of denial about the state of his game. I guess he won’t be totally up front about that when talking to the press, but, geez…..
Second – he sounds like he’s dedicated to watching tape and trying to improve. KUDOs, but…..
    1) sometimes that makes you even more tight when out there and trying to react. There is a point where attention to minutiae becomes counterproductive
    MORE important
    2) he mentioned he’s watching tape with Todd Riordan….my goodness, are NONE of his mistakes being pointed out to him by the coaching staff? This goes to Accountability. The guy is turning the puck over repeatedly …..are these errors being addressed in the apparent hours or tape-time?

How could he watch that much tape and have that evaluation of the state of his game? If he can’t see it, shouldn’t the coaches see it?

It all just seemed kind of weird to me.

  23. Barb says:

I’m pretty sure its the beginning of January.

  24. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thank you, Madam !

  25. Barb says:

    KUNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOP WOOP!

  26. JohninOshkosh says:

  27. Sarah says:

    YAY for Chara’s shin pad!!!!

  28. JohninOshkosh says:

Engo takies on Lukic ! Brave man.

  29. theplanisworking says:

  30. theplanisworking says:

    Broonz frustrated!

  31. theplanisworking says:

    Broonz frustrated!

  32. theplanisworking says:

I really need to get a TV in my bathroom.
    Missed the goal.

    2014 wish list………….

  33. Barb says:

    TMI, TMI!

  34. Barb says:

Boo the bad guys tied it!

  35. JohninOshkosh says:

Bruins score on their first shot on goal and, just like that, it’s tied.

  36. JohninOshkosh says:

This is going to be a nasty game. Lot’s of bad ju ju out there.

  37. Sarah says:

Yeah. I think the Bs will just play their regular game against us….

  38. Barb says:

I hope Thorton is thrown out of the game for the sucker punch to Orpik. I hate the Bruins.

  39. JohninOshkosh says:

Scary image of Brooksie. Does not look good. Off on a stretcher.

  40. hockeymonster says:

What will the knuckledraggers say now?

  41. Barb says:

I think that the Pens should play the Bruins 5 on 3 for the rest of the game for that punch.

  42. Sarah says:

The injuries are just getting ludicrous.

Perhaps Borts will get a chance.

  43. theplanisworking says:

    I missed it, what happened?

  44. theplanisworking says:

They will say THAT was REAL hockey……….

  45. Barb says:

Thornton was given a match penalty.

  46. theplanisworking says:

  47. Barb says:

Take that Bruins. Jimmie my boy!

  48. JohninOshkosh says:

Did they actually issue a game misconduct ? Didn’t know the refs knew how to do that anymore.

  49. theplanisworking says:

    NEAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  50. JohninOshkosh says:

    Better yet, a match penalty.

  51. scapper says:

C’mon now, as ugly as that was, Neal’s knee to the head was vicious and an attempt to injure. Not justifying the assault on Orpik one bit, but it’s pretty even. Sickening all around.

And while this might catch some crap, the whole tone of this game was set by Orpik’s legal but wholly unnecessary and pretty cheap hit to start the game. Guy was turned around and didn’t play the puck. Again, I know it was legal, but so was Cooke’s hit against the B’s a few years ago.

NOT SAYING ORPIK DESERVED WHAT HE GOT. Don’t make that jump. Just saying it’s not all “poor poor Pens” here.

  52. JohninOshkosh says:

Agreed. Pens set the tone here. No innocents here.

  53. J Walter Weatherman says:

I agree with some of the comments above. It looked like Neal’s knee to Marchand’s head was intentional and he should expect to be suspended. That said, Thornton was worse, and he has to get 5-10 games for that, at least.

Both teams guilty of the escalating play. It just got out of hand.

Most of all, best wishes to Brooksie. Scary stuff.

  54. hockeymonster says:

The rules enable way too much.

  55. Wild Bill says:

I’ve thought for a long time that inactive players should still be allowed to dress for games, and then be immediately active if an injury occurs due to a foul by the opposition.

  56. Vette60 says:

Hey Scapper – I agree 100 percent with what you wrote above and was about to punch in a similar comment. Really hoping that Brooks is ok, It got ugly fast with the first hit in the game and then escalated from there. Thorton was totally out of control assaulting Orpik like he did, but Neal’s knee to Marchand’s head was really dirty too.

Garage league all around for this type of crap.

Take it easy guys and gals.

    Randy in RVA.

  57. Wild Bill says:

Obviously one activated for one injured player.

  58. theplanisworking says:

I missed the Orpik hit .
Can someone tell me what happened, please?

  59. Wild Bill says:

Missed it myself, Hippo. The broadcasters said something about a sucker punch.

  60. Jandy says:

    Thornton is a p*ssy.

  61. Jandy says:

teams and refs were milling after one of the Pens dropped Chara I think. Thornton beeelines for Brooksie, uses his stick behind his knees to drop him and when he’s fown sucker punches him

  62. J Walter Weatherman says:

Thornton knocked him to the ice after whistle had blown play dead, then punched Brooks in the face twice while he was down. Knocked him out. Brooks never tried to defend himself.

  63. Vette60 says:

Ok. So the B’s announcers are morons…I am watching via NHL network and while I sorta agree that if Orpik go a penalty on the first hit, maybe it would have diffused things. Ok, that’s possible. But, then they said that maybe if Brooks “manned up” and fought Thorton, he basically wouldn’t be in the situation that he is…really? What a absolutely barbaric comment. That is what is wrong with the NHL – it’s ruled by a bunch of cavemen. Until that changes, it will be a garage league…

    Randy in RVA.

  64. Barb says:

Hipposter this was in retaliation for the knee to head by Neal.

  65. Barb says:

Amen to that. I give Brooks credit for not wanting to fight because it accomplishes NOTHING.

  66. Jandy says:

This from the city of the team that plays Marchand? Please!

  67. Vette60 says:

Maybe Chara, but it started when Neal kneed Marchand in the head when Marchand was on the ice…

What a punch of donkey dung all around…

  68. Barb says:

This is the reason I love Olympic hockey because there is NO FIGHTING.

  69. Vette60 says:

punch – bunch – what ever, I am steaming now…

  70. J Walter Weatherman says:

You could be right, but not sure about that. Thornton had tried to fight Brooks on the previous shift, so I think it was carryover from that (and carryover from the Orpik hit on Eriksson). The Neal hit happened seconds before Thornton went after Brooks – not even sure that he saw that.

  71. theplanisworking says:

Hopefully Thornton will get a lengthy suspension, but Jacobs will grease Bettman’s palms to make sure that doesn t happen.

  72. Jandy says:

    Marchand is never innocent

  73. Wild Bill says:

    Agreed, Randy.

  74. Jandy says:

Boston can dish it out but they sure as hell can’t take it.

  75. JohninOshkosh says:

Couldn’t agree more. Olympics (and colleges) prove that fighting can be taken out of the game.

  76. Jandy says:

boston’s very.good at dishing it out but they can’t.take it

  77. Sarah says:

Really I don’t know how you don’t just arrest Thornton.
How is that not simply an assault?

  78. Jandy says:

As bad as some of Cookie’s hits were none of.them were as cheap as what Thornton did.

  79. Jandy says:

I was thinking the sam thing sarah

  80. Dave G says:

So the Thornton / Orpik incident serves to remind us what is blatantly wrong with the NHL’s handling of fighting and such.

When a group of ex-players files a suit against the league for compensation for long term damage due to concussions and similar injuries, and then the league permits to occur the incidents like those that happen tonight, you can’t label it anything but hypocrisy- from BOTH sides of the issue.

    A) Players want to police themselves, and
    B) the league just looks the other way.

If a player chooses to be a goon, what defense does he have against concussion damage when he retires? And if the league chooses to permit fighting and general goonery, when will these incidents ever end?

  81. theplanisworking says:

  82. theplanisworking says:

  83. Jandy says:

No honey, I spelled it right! Any man who sucker punches another man is a p*ssy!

  84. Jandy says:

well, a 4 minute power play and the Pens look pathetic.

  85. J Walter Weatherman says:

It’s not a good thing when Engelland is on the PP. Crosby has passed up shooting on two great chances tonight. Niskanen looks really bad on the PP, and would rather see Maatta in that role, given the injuries.

  86. theplanisworking says:

  87. Barb says:

Personally I was thinking of the word that rhymes with stick!

  88. theplanisworking says:

Thats because the Olympics and colleges are not rooted in the 1920’s mentality like the NHL.

  89. Sarah says:

The Bruins feed is apparently blaming Orpik for not manning up and fighting Thornton.
    Honestly it’s nauseating.
    I’m done for the night.

  90. Jandy says:

    That works too, barb

  91. Jandy says:

Why would you let a rose-colored glasses crew’s comments chase you from watching the game?

  92. Barb says:

In my opinion it takes a man to walk away from a fight.

  93. theplanisworking says:

    Wick? ;)

  94. Jandy says:

    wanna try again? ;)

  95. Jandy says:

    Marchand is a p^ssy too

  96. theplanisworking says:

  97. theplanisworking says:

    But you are right.
Notice how players like Marchand get away with everything, becasue they have owners like Jacobs who pressure Bettman to allow it?

Mario complains about things, and Bettman targets the Pens?

    Food for thought.

  98. Barb says:

    Great save by the Flower.

  99. JohninOshkosh says:

I recently read 98% of NHLPA is against outlawing fighting. 98%!

Fine. Then in the next CBA, have the players agree that they hold the league harmless now and in the future for concussion related conditions. Ridiculous. Truth is nobody seems to want to eliminate fighting-management, players and fans. I don’t mind fighting as much as some on this blog, but I’ll never be sympathetic to the NHLPA when then talk about safety in the game, etc.

  100. theplanisworking says:

Go to the main DK blog page.
He just put up an “instant” column whacking Bettman.
    A must read.

  101. Barb says:

Well they want their cake and eat it too. Either you keep fighting or you don’t and then don’t complain after you have retired about concussion symptoms. It’s all or nothing.

  102. Jandy says:

  103. Jandy says:

I don’t mind the real fights. The staged ones are rather stupid. What Thornton did wasn’t a fight.

  104. theplanisworking says:

  105. hockeymonster says:

Sill is really showing me something. Tanger is back.

  106. Jandy says:

  107. JohninOshkosh says:

Thanks for pointing that out, Jandy. This was not fighting. I’m the biggest Boxing fan I know. Boxers are taught from early on not to punch below the belt, hit the kidneys, hit the back of the head or hit a man falling down or who is already down.

This was felonious assault. Nothing less.

  108. Lad 9 says:

Could not agree more. That happens on the street and there will be a sentence involved. I do think DK is wasting his time calling out Bettman though. He will never step up and be a good leader. I call on the NHL Board of Governors to please, finally, remove this poor excuse for an executive, this man who has done more to boost other sports by driving people away from his own, this piece of dung, this… you get my drift. Get him out! NOW!

  109. Wild Bill says:

He write with a lot of passion because he knows that “no stones” Bettman will do next to nothing.

  110. theplanisworking says:

Board of Governors will do nothing, Because Bettman has had 2 lockout to make the league money.

  111. Jandy says:

Hi Laddie, good to see you :)

  112. Jandy says:

    Agreed Oshie!

  113. Lad 9 says:

JANDY! Same here. Nice to be able to stop in.

  114. theplanisworking says:

    What she said, Laddie.

  115. Lad 9 says:

HIPPO my friend! Thank you. Right back at you.

  116. theplanisworking says:

Thorntons assault has me not into this game as much as I normally am.

I just know Bettman wont do anything.
If this was Cooke, he would be jailed……..

  117. Lad 9 says:

I know. But even if it is futile, I still have to howl into the wind. I watched the assault on Orpik again and I am incensed. That was thuggery of the lowest order. He should in handcuffs

  118. Lad 9 says:

Cookie would get 40 games. I have zero confidence in the garage league’s ability to get anything write and I am sure that they will not disappoint me here.

  119. theplanisworking says:

Like I said earlier, Jacobs is already on the phone threatening Bettman NOT to do anything…… or else.

  120. Eric Bowser says:

Was out with the family at Kennywood and then dinner…. seeing what I saw on my cell phone is disgusting. I’ll have much more to say on this later… to say I’m ticked is an understatement.

  121. Lad 9 says:

    right not write. Jandy disease…

  122. theplanisworking says:

For Boston to get any points out of this game would be so wrong………

  123. J Walter Weatherman says:

Who couldn’t see that coming? Too many chances missed by Pens. Crosby having a bad game.

  124. Barb says:

    Charo grrrrrrrrrrrr!

  125. Vette60 says:

Fudge…they really need to win this one and that goal by the B’s with the goalie pulled…

  126. Lad 9 says:

Pens got so sloppy in their own end in the last couple of minutes. Damn!

  127. J Walter Weatherman says:

  128. theplanisworking says:

There is no justice in the NHL.

  129. Jandy says:

    This is so wrong.

  130. Jandy says:

that they could not hold onto thi game for Brooksie is sad

  131. Lad 9 says:

  132. J Walter Weatherman says:

Crosby loses yet another faceoff against Bergeron, then wanders aimlessly in his own end as the Bruins finish off Pens.

Pens may go into a little funk after this game. Disheartening all the way around.

  133. J Walter Weatherman says:

Fleury comes up big again … oh wait, nevermind.

  134. theplanisworking says:

Jacobs, Bettman, and Thornton cackling with glee.

Now, we wait to see what the NHL wont do.

  135. theplanisworking says:

    Where’s Dom?

  136. Lad 9 says:

It is. God I hate the Bruin.

  137. Barb says:

I can’t believe that we lost that game. That is criminal too.

  138. DJ says:

HCDB takes his foot totally off the pedal in the third and there you have it. The result we deserved.

Bergeron eats Sid’s lunch in FO circle again.

What is with Sid’s new upright “side-saddle swipe” in the face-off circle? Has he gotten his chin popped once too often this year that he has totally changed from his his low stance? He’s been terrible since he has been going with this new approach.

  139. Purple Moose says:

Exactly right Walter, second game in a row against Bruins that Crosby lost the game. How many times is Bylsma going to let Crosby lose faceoffs to Bergeron in his career before he tries somebody else but that’s right, Disco Dan doesn’t believe in matching lines or coaching tendencies.

  140. DJ says:

Sutter, with Sid on the ice, took the last one in the left FO circle in the D-zone and won it cleanly.

Where was Sutter on the last one? Where was a timeout from HCDB if we needed it to get Sutter on the ice?

  141. Jandy says:

    It infuriates me.

  142. Purple Moose says:

Didn’t have to call a timeout since the Bruins iced the puck, we could have put anybody on the ice that we wanted. Our head coach chose to go with Crosby on the FO knowing that his percentage against Bergeron sucks. It is little decisions or lack of decisions like this is the reason that nothing will change come this playoff season when it takes little coaching decisions to give the edge against teams that are your equal.

  143. Vette60 says:

What a bunch of malarkey that they lost that game…I had to deal with kids that were awake way past their bed time right after the game tying goal and then came back and put on the DVR to see Chara score…what a crock…

Sid, Sid, Sid…bury the break away and we’re not here…win the faceoff and maybe not either…I can’t stand the Bruins, almost as much as I can’t stand the Flyers…

Real shame that they couldn’t hold on and win this one…

    Randy in RVA.

  144. hockeymonster says:

That turnover by maatta in corner late in 3rd tilted the ice their way. Never recovered after that post. Too bad…maatta and defense was real good. Let’s hope brooksie is ok.

  145. scapper says:

Had to leave the house right after the assault on Orpik.

Jandy, you’re aces, but I think you’re wrong on the “dish it out but can’t take it” thing. It all started with that first-minute hit by Orpik. I love when he crushes people with the puck, but this one, while rightly not penalized, was just cheap and easy. And that set the tone for the game. The Brooooons (as they say up north) were crushing bodies after that, and the Pens can’t play that type of game.

And this isn’t something I’m saying after the fact. I was yelling at the TV when he did it and for the next 20 minutes or so after that.

Again, this does not mean that 44 “got what was coming to him” or any crap like that. What happened to him was, as DK has already said, pretty much criminal.

Here’s hoping one of the all-time great Pens is okay.

  146. Jandy says:

I don’t agree, scapper. the bruins have ALWAYS played us hard, and at times, illegally nasty. Don’t even bring Cooke into this. Marchand is a turd. Lucic is a pulverizing monster. Brooke can’t hold a candle to either of them. And that’s not even bringing up what Schenn did to Crosby as mentioned above. The Bruins are fast becoming the new Flyers of the east.

  147. Jandy says:

but hey thanks for the complement :)

  148. scapper says:

And one more thing. The comment above by someone ripping Fleury for not making the save on the go-ahead or tying goal….seriously? Pens sitting atop the East. MAF is as responsible for that as any Penguin. Then they blow an away game in Boston in heartbreaking fashion…after winning 5 in a row and losing, what…1 of their last 10? And it’s time to rip Fleury again?

I always remember fickleness like this when fans rail about feeling so jilted by the “disloyalty” of players who leave via free agency.

  149. Jandy says:

I don’t blame one player. They lost as a team. It still disappoints me…

  150. theplanisworking says:

    I blame you.
Ever since you put Geno as your avatar……… ;)

Hopefully DK keeps the pressure on……….

  151. Jandy says:

    But yeah…this is one of Dejan’s finest…

  152. theplanisworking says:

    Good Night, Nun.
I have beaten the dead horse on 2 threads, so I am out.
    GO STILLERZ tomorrow.

  153. Jandy says:

sweet ones, Hipposter, my friend :*
