  1. Eric Bowser says:

I should be excited for this game, always a great game but this NHL decision has me in a foul mood.

  2. theplanisworking says:

With todays joke of a “disciplinary decison”, I now know that anytime a player gets hit/assaulted/mugged, nothing will be done.

Lost in all the discussion about this is…………. the Penguins are now the wrong type of team to ever win a Cup again, as currently constructed. Why have talent like Crosby, and Malkin, when those players can be assaulted and neutralized. Teams like Boston are the way to go now, where you can hire a bunch of thugs and criminals and do as you please, and will get a slap on the wrist for serious transgressions.

Hockey had a turning point today, and as usual , they turned the wrong way.
Enjoy the game, I am sitting this one out.
The next Penguin that gets injured by goonism will have to sit there and wonder why he is even bothering to play the game anymore.

And, I will never cheer for a style of play espoused by the Flyers, and Bruins.

  4. hockeymonster says:

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages…in light of open season on Assault Race 3000….I welcome you to Consol Dome!!!

    …and the crowd goes wild…

  5. Bizrow says:

Neal gets 5 games for a pretty much in the heat of the moment poor decision, hey I don’t like this guy, but his face it here, eat a knee.

Thornton gets 15 games for a pretty much, IMO, premeditated attack. I’m going to get Orpik tonight. So he skates in and mugs a guy that is really not in the play/infraction.

The “shoulda, fought” and the Neal infraction unfortunately, from this seat, influenced the Thornton decision

  6. Pucknutz says:

Ya me too. But maybe, just maybe, it will start to get some of the NHLs bigwigs thinking.
By the way – nice post in the instant thread Eric.

  7. Sarah says:

Almost as foul as the mood I’m in after listening to the clips from Bylsma and Shero.

I’m with Madden in this one: the Pens look like pansies.

  8. Sarah says:

Sadly, I’m with Madden again : this is what the NHL WANTS.

  9. hockeymonster says:

Dumoulin playing? Would be good time to move Engo to RW for kobasew.

  10. Arriba Wilver says:

If it makes you feel any better, I heard Madden say that he doesn’t care at all about what Neal did because he’s our player and Marchand is a jerk. Not really the approach that is going to move this forward. ;-)

  11. hockeymonster says:

I think the no previous suspensions was as much a factor as anything. Shanny didn’t really have the impetus to bring the hammer down. Unless doing the sane thing is impetus enough.

  12. Eric Bowser says:

    Letang is out….

That’s the whole top 4 on D…. oh my

  13. hockeymonster says:

Open tryouts next week at consol dome…see you there sarah.

  14. tpbco says:

Yep, and Kevin Allen (USA Today) and others wrote that he thought it was approrpriate and sent the correct message.

Both Shero and HCDB talked about thornton being a good, stand up guy who just made a mistake.

So the NHL Hockey world really does think they got it right.

  15. hockeymonster says:

Almost like Thornton suffered from “affluenza”.

  16. Sarah says:

    Zat on his butt again…..

  17. Sarah says:

    Gah. Ground ball….

  18. Eric Bowser says:

Pens tie it up, good movement and bodies in front of net.

    Crosby goal.

    1-1 game.

  19. Eric Bowser says:

Thank you deflection for Malkin on the PP

    2-1 Pens

  20. J Walter Weatherman says:

Dumb play by Engelland. Hurts the team, which is already short on defensemen. Yet, he still plays over Bortuzzo on a regular basis?

  21. TJ says:

Shanahan showed he is just as much of a coward as Thornton. Does not even have the balls to announce the suspension during the week. Waits for a Saturday afternoon. He’s a joke.

Call on Engelland was bad. 5 min and a match? Are you kidding me? If anything it was Engellands helmet that made contact.

  22. Bizrow says:

I will once again get taken off of Dejan’s Christmas Card list, or any other acknowledgement of my existence.

Mark Madden is an A#1 Jerk

  23. J Walter Weatherman says:

Doesn’t really matter what part of him hits his head. Bottom line is Engelland hit his head and he could’ve avoided it. Engelland was looking right at him and followed through with his arm. It was the right call, and I’d expect a 1-2 game suspension.

  24. Bizrow says:

Tigers bullpen is in pretty good shape

  25. TJ says:

That is such a lame excuse. The guy does not have any previous history of suspensions so he is entitled to less of a suspension? That’s part of what makes the NHL a joke. Why in the world should your prior history play a factor when what you did would account for criminal assault? Prior history should only be part of the equation when looking at questionable hits not criminal activity.

  26. TJ says:

Thank you for reminding me why I stopped posting on this site

  27. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1

  28. J Walter Weatherman says:

Because someone didn’t agree with you? Welcome to life.

  29. TJ says:

You are right. And a true class act

  30. Bizrow says:

    Knock it off, knuckleheads

  31. J Walter Weatherman says:

how about that? a defenseman gets a shot on goal and it leads to a goal. nice job by maatta

  32. TJ says:

    +1000000000000000

    Back to retirement I go.

  33. hockeymonster says:

    Agreed

  34. Bizrow says:

    Knock it off, knuckleheads

  35. Bizrow says:

Honestly, I expect more from you than that post

  36. J Walter Weatherman says:

now the pens are taking out their own defensemen. pens caught a break there – bad call.

  37. J Walter Weatherman says:

that looked bad for malkin. not good …

  38. Pucknutz says:

Hey Biz, nice to see you added Lacheide, Barbaro, and Mckennan.
With all the bad vibes coming off the Thornton thing it is nice to have a little smile thinking about the good things those guys did.
I think I think I remember Mckennan introing Clemente, Stargell etc back at old Forbes Field. But I was about 10 at the time and my brother and I were really most interested into conning, whining my Dad or Uncle to flag the “hey Coke here” guy down to wash down the third hot dog or penunts.
Ya we were into the game but at the time priorities shifted quickly! lol
Lacheide being banned by the NHL from playing “Three Blind Mice” as the refs skated on- priceless!
Barbaro had the best goal calls ever — Mario Lemeeeeeeeiux……
I am smiling like a butchers dog reminiscing. Small good things in life sometimes take away a lot of the bad.

  39. Bizrow says:

What, 5-6 guys playing from AHL background?

Up by two in Detroit with 6 minutes to go?

KMA Maggie, that is a solid organization

  40. Bizrow says:

    Make that 3 up

  41. J Walter Weatherman says:

what an incredibly gutsy performance by the pens tonight. 2nd of back-to-back games, in Detroit, down their top 4 d-men, playing their backup goalie, lose another d-man at the end of the 1st period, lose malkin in the 3rd (possibly for a long time). killing engelland’s 5 minute match penalty set the tone for the game. zatkoff was very solid.

  42. Bizrow says:

Thanks for the nominations, did I spell Art wrong?

He was the announcer at Forbes for many years

    Vince and John were overdue

  43. jm says:

Anyone miss the 10-15 glaring, inexcusable turnovers generated by #58? Or the way slows the power play to a crawl? Me neither.

  44. Bizrow says:

Get an avatar, maybe folks will talk to you

  45. Bizrow says:

    I raise my hand,,

    Pens won, didn’t they?

    Get an avatar

    58 is doing fine

  46. jm says:

Tonight is more proof that Letang is expendable. Use him to get at least one winger who can pound the snot out of goons like Thornton in the playoffs.

  47. Rbilak says:

Sad that your GM and Coach seem more upset with James Neal than Shawn Thorton. Better off No Comment on other team’s players.

    - Thorton challenged Orpik once, Orpik would not fight. Thorton then, sent by his coach out every time Orpik went on ice. Then he deliberately intended to injure him. That was his intention so that is a lie. What intention did he have? None, other than inflict pain and injure Orpik, as bad as he could. Stand up guy? No thug, non-charged criminal. This is a human who punches someone knocked out.

  48. Eric Bowser says:

Good team victory playing without their top four defensemen, losing Engelland to match penalty and Malkin to leg injury.

  49. Jandy says:

Your big mouth doesn’t make you more masculine than Biz. Get an avatar.

  50. jm says:

    Crosby rules, btw.

  51. The NY Daily News opines that the MLB proposal banning home plate collisions represents a more progressive view of toughness and manhood. Now if only the NHL could adopt more similar progressive views in the future.

  52. And eventually, this nonsense will occur again and again, and the NHL will react the same way it has this time. We can all count on that.

  53. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1

  54. They’re talking about an appeal for Shawn Thornton, and Deryk Engelland will likely get 5 days for that hit on that Boston player’s chin last night. And Geno Malkin was seen walking on his injured leg after last night’s game by Coach Dan Bylsma so it likely wasn’t broken anyhow. And so, how was your Saturday night?
