Comments

  1. Well, the Pens had an infrequent lapse and lost in overtime last night to a team they should have beaten. Also, they well earned Rod Scuderi’s scolding, and, hopefully, they’ll take that to heart when they’re back on the ice next Sunday night.

  2. Old 1SG says:

I agree James. Lately, it seems the Pens let up in the 3rd and allow their opponents back into the game. If you’re up 2-0 in the 3rd, against a last place team, there’s no way you should lose that game. Scuds got it right and maybe the rest will listen to him, including Dan. We’ve allowed too many goals in the last 3 games which shows a dangerous pattern. Time to do some tweaking Dan.

  3. Hopefully, James Franklin will be clean and well worth the $4.5 million Penn State will reportedly be paying him.

  4. theplanisworking says:

It’s official……. James Franklin next Penn State coach.
    News conference at 4:15.

  5. theplanisworking says:

For those who are out-of-market……… the game can be seen online at ESPN3.com. I am out-of-market, and don’t get the ACC Network.

    Just a heads up.

  6. Sarah says:

I saw a replay of OT 3 on 4….Adams Glass and Orpik?
    REALLY?

  7. radio wave says:

ACC is weak. Heels are flat, Duke good not great. Cuse and Pitt could win it.

  8. DJ says:

Been saying it for awhile, dating back to early last year. Although I’ve loved what Orpik has brought to the team over the years, it is now time to cut ties and move on. That’s just reality. He’s slow, reaction time slower and he is killing us.

Engelland botching Letang’s stretch pass was also a killer. Questions: 1. Why the stretch pass there when we’ve got the lead? Why not solid defensive play for a period, waiting or the Oilers to make a mistake since they make plenty? 2. Why is Engelland even on this squad and why is he playing forward?

    That’s all I’ve got.

  9. JohninOshkosh says:

Wake Forest University has produced a dearth of notable celebrities in the entertainment field. Lee Norris (remember Minkus on “Boy Meets World” ? Well, he is an alum.

Nice basketball history at Wake. The great Tim Duncan went there. So did Chris Paul. And the legendary Mugsy Bogues.

The school most famous alum is probably Arnold Palmer. Three US Open winners (Palmer, Curtis Strange and Webb Simpson) played there.

    Maya Angelou taught there.

Question of the day: What exactly is a Demon Deacon ? So it’s a demon….but also a deacon!

    Go Pitt !!!

  10. hockeymonster says:

It did seem like the forwards were too far away from d leading to sloppy passes and plays.

  11. Sarah says:

Was there even a C out there to take a faceoff? All DBs line changes are predicated on always having at least one C on the ice….yet he puts out Gladams and Orpik.

I guess I’m hoping Scuderi can provide some locker room presence a la Roberts/Geurin.

The personnel decisions are beyond mystifying. They’re just stupid.

  12. hockeymonster says:

So i didnt manage to talk you down the other day? :)

  13. Arriba Wilver says:

JAL is on CSPAN2 now, just started.

  14. Thundercrack says:

    Watching JAL right now on
    C-SPAN2 !

  15. Sarah says:

Sadly, no….not for lack of trying Monster!! :-D

Really it’s not just Orpik, it’s why Glass and Adams are out there at that time…..why Engo plays while the youngsters sit. Why there’s no accountability for the Teachers Pets….why our D as a whole loses discipline when Letang returns….and on and on.

Oh well. They got a point anyway.

  16. radio wave says:

    Billy Packer too.

  17. JohninOshkosh says:

Very cool. He’s too distinguished looking for this blog !

  18. JAL looks good. Far too intelligent for this blog. Even with his lack of punctuation use.

    :D

  19. You owe me a coke, John.

  20. hockeymonster says:

I hear ya. Gladams looks shakier than usually cuz bottom 6 cant sustain any pressure and gladams arent a huge help there. Sutter needs gibby, connor, ebbett, megna or bennett to be most helpful. Pyatt and adams as his wingers wont get it done long term.

I’ve been implying Sill should be sent down to work on his overall game but seems like team d has been worse with him out. He’s basically a bigger tougher version of Adams right now. Still think his puck skills need work but i’d play him ahead of Pyatt and Adams right now.

Not sure what the issue was mentally last night. Seemed like we wanted to turn down every PP refs gave us. Still not sure how Neal dived after that cross check. But going forward with this group in our bottom 6 we need to focus on close puck support even more so than last couple months. Engo shouldn’t need to have to receive 40 foot laser beam passes on his backhand.

Besides Cammelleri, I’ll be watching TJ Galliardi and Colbourne from calgary. Both would be upgrades to our bottom 6 if my other trade preferences aren’t obtainable.

  21. How about a blue devil?

  22. JohninOshkosh says:

Well, we know Dejan isn’t watching. It’s about, God forbid, books. Maybe if CSPAN was televising a book burning….

  23. Penn State will reportedly be paying James Franklin $27.6 million over 6 years so they’d better get this right.

  24. Lad9 says:

Live from the Pete. Let’s go Pitt. Which set of Demon Deacons will we see today? The group that beat the Tarheels last weekend, or the crew that laid an absolute egg in Charlottsville this week. Tell u in 2 hours. Let’s go Pitt!

  25. JohninOshkosh says:

Have fun! Wish I was there!

  26. Bizrow says:

ARoid suspension announced as 162 games, including playoffs, saves the Yankees about 24 mm

  27. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hip Hip Hooray!

Ding dong! The jerk is gone! At least for a year anyway.

He still got the number cut, right ?

  28. theplanisworking says:

Couldn’t you say this about every single D-1 school every single time?

  29. Thundercrack says:

    Nice job by JAL today

  30. Bizrow says:

Yup and I guess he still can fight it somehow, he was supposedly not going to fight if it got cut to 60 some games

  31. theplanisworking says:

    A Demon Deacon is the far-removed cousin of a Blue Devil…. ;)

  32. theplanisworking says:

    HOORAY!!

    But the celebration is short-lived……..
He has vowed to fight this in court.
And with the power of the subpoena, it could get much uglier for both sides.

Here is to ARoid never playing again.

  33. Barb says:

I hope he wastes huge buckets of money defending his “dignity” and the case is thrown out of court. What a colossal jerk.

  34. JohninOshkosh says:

8-4 Panthers at first media timeout.

  35. Arriba Wilver says:

    True dat.

  36. With all DK’s journalistic accomplishments, this forum he provides really brings together a lot of fine people. I know he pokes fun at the blog at times, but I appreciate him providing it.

    Now, about burning those books.

  37. pattonbb says:

    Good.

    His career is over.

  38. theplanisworking says:

I have read that it could cost over $10 million dollars to do this.

He has absolutely no one to blame but himself.

And, I wonder if the Yankees can now void the remainder of his contract??

  39. JohninOshkosh says:

Pitt has looked good so far. A couple of coast to coast transitions. Getting the ball inside. Not a slow start this morning.

  40. JohninOshkosh says:

Zanna has really improved from last season.

  41. Angels and demons, right?

    :o

  42. theplanisworking says:

Talib Zanna for Wooden Player of the Year !!!! ;)

For anyone who questions Dixon’s ability to “coach players up”, I present Aaron Gray, and Talib Zanna as examples.

  43. theplanisworking says:

    See my note just below.
Dixon does a very good job of developing players.

  44. Arriba Wilver says:

My contribution about Wake Forest. 10 or so years ago I went college hunting with my oldest daughter. We visited 10 schools. Wake Forest had a beautiful campus. But the thing that really stood out was it had the prettiest girls. It was almost unreal.

    Back to your regular programming.

  45. Thundercrack says:

Will ARod’s salary still count towards the Yankees’ payroll tax level/calculation ?

  46. theplanisworking says:

I know Steve Adams made a good decision to go pro after one year at Pitt.
He is averaging 4.1 points, and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Just think how much better he would be if he stayed even one more year.
He could have been a Top 3 pick in the draft.

  47. Bizrow says:

I don’t think so, TC, but a bit is supposed to as the suspension is for 162 days/games, the season is 183 days

There are some good writeups on MLBTradeRumors on that

  48. JohninOshkosh says:

    Where’s 21 ? He knows that stuff.

  49. JohninOshkosh says:

    +

Never been there. For me, that would be my feelings about Iowa City.

  50. JohninOshkosh says:

Boy, what an atmosphere at the Pete. I gotta believe the other ACC teams are going to fear coming there in the future.

  51. theplanisworking says:

Here is a statement from ARoid:

“”No player should have to go through what I have been dealing with, and I am exhausting all options to ensure not only that I get justice, but that players’ contracts and rights are protected through the next round of bargaining, and that the MLB investigation and arbitration process cannot be used against others in the future the way it is currently being used to unjustly punish me.”

    How noble.

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/10278277/alex-rodriguez-suspension-reduced-162-games

  52. Barb says:

    Oh please. Boo hoo hoo!

  53. Most people in the know don’t expect Arod to get very far with any appeals, so the
question will now be whether or not he plays again.

  54. Barb says:

    Great 1st half for Pitt.

  55. JohninOshkosh says:

Best first half in a few games for the Panthers. Pitts’ defense has looked steady.

40-26. Halftime. Good performance to drop 40 on the Demon Deacons in the first half. Lamar Patterson with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Continuing to make a case for first team All-ACC.

Shooting better from the charity stripe as well. Came into the contest tied with Duke at 48th in nation.

If teams are going to beat Pitt, they need to hit 3 pointers to spread out the defense. Solid defensive ball club in Oakland.

  56. Lad9 says:

You are right John. Tough place to play if you are visiting, but the best ticket in the Burgh if you want to enjoy yourself. Just my opinion because the Pens and Pirates do a great job too.

  57. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++

Talib Zanna already has 10 rebounds.
    Durand Johnson with 9 points.

  58. Lad9 says:

    + many So right Plansky!

  59. Arriba Wilver says:

That’s true. VERY difficult to win an appeal of a labor arbitration award. Whole process is set up to make them final.

  60. theplanisworking says:

James, it will depend on how good ARoids lawyers are, and how much information they will be able to subpoena.

He may face an uphill battle, but this isn’t over.
Arbitration awards have been overturned or reduced before.
Doesn’t happen often, but that isn’t stopping him it seems.

  61. 15-point lead with 11 minutes left. Looks like Pitt and Syracuse are the class of the ACC.

That ought to get Groat out of moth balls.

  62. theplanisworking says:

    Pot-stirrer.

  63. JRay3 says:

Can’t argue that, Pitt continues to steam roll it’s way through ACC competition, Syracuse rips UNC and between the two former Big East schools they are 6-0 while UNC is 0-3.

Pitt is almost assured for its long overdue place in the Top 25 come Monday after losses this week by Gonzaga, Illinois, Oregon.

Pitt is such a balanced team and are just so efficient on both ends of the court, going to be a tough out for anybody this season.

  64. JRay3 says:

Typo – its way not it’s way.

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

Big week for Pitt coming up. Road games against Georgia Tech and the big one next weekend against their old Big East nemesis. (Maybe Dejan will be in Syracuse for that one ?).

    If this team isn’t a top 25 team, then I’m a monkey’s uncle.

I love college BB and watch a good deal of it throughout the season. This team looks as good as anybody I’ve seen and that includes my undefeated Badgers.

But it’s hard to make a good judgment without seeing how the club handles road games. They definitely have an advantage at the wonderful Pete. Just like the Badgers enjoy at the Kohl Center.

  66. theplanisworking says:

Behind Lamar Patterson’s 27 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds………………. and Talib Zanna’s 16 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, Pitt scores a decisive victory today.

Next game: Tuesday at Georgia Tech.
Pitt should be in the Top 25 this coming week.

Hope Johnson’s knee injury is not serious.
    GO PITT !

  67. JohninOshkosh says:

Pitt never let Wake make a run in the second half. Fun, nice performance by the Panthers today.

This ACC is a piece of cake!

  68. JAL says:

thanks, glad some youenjoyed the event. I had a great time. Very friendly couple.

  69. 21sthebest says:

Thanks John. The Yanks get $27.5M of luxury tax relief in 2014.

By the way, 21 is sipping a beer by the ocean in Key West!

  70. radio wave says:

Unfortunately you can add Iowa State to the list. Lost at Oklahoma today.

  71. JohninOshkosh says:

    Awesome. Enjoy.

  72. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m getting the feeling that Sean Payton is not a nice fellow. Lot of questionable behaviour by the Saints defensive.

Glad to see former Badger Russell Wilson and Seattle playing well. Marshawn Lynch is a beast.

  73. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1

  74. pattonbb says:

I agree. Payton just oozes shadiness….If that’s even a word.

Seattle defense is really fun to watch. They get after it.

  75. Brandie says:

    Setting the ACC on fire!

  76. Finally, somebody, somewhere playing some defense. What a refreshing site.

  77. Patrick(ri) says:

Given what Clemson did to Duke and what Syracuse did to UNC, Pitt may have a good first year (though not impressesed by any of 3 teams they have whipped,so far).
