  1. JohninOshkosh says:

This will be a very good test for the Panthers. I still miss the Terrapins playing at Cole Field House, but the Comcast Center has become a very difficult place to play.

Road wins in almost any league are hard earned. This will be a much bigger challenge for Pitt than when Maryland came a callin’ to the Pete.

My thoughts are with the good people of Maryland as well.

  2. Jim S. says:

Good road challenge. I believe Maryland’s ACC games this year will have added significance attached to them. They are not exactly parting ways with the ACC on good terms. They want to show the conference what it is losing, while impressing those watching from the B1G. And the traditional competition from the ACC will want to stick it to MD for jilting the conference.

If Maryland gets hot from 3, it could be a long afternoon for Pitt. I am going to predict a dog fight that the Panthers seize control of midway through the 2nd half, and pull away for a 74-65 win.

Panthers need to have the lead late, so that they can be sending the right guys (Robinson and Patterson) to the line to seal the victory.

  3. Wonder where our friend, SeanAY, SID and radio voice of the Western Michigan Broncos has been. They are having a decent season at 10-7 and 3-2 in the MAC West, one game out of first. They host Ball State tomorrow.
He opened one of their broadcasts with Hoka Hey and good evening. Extremely funny at the time.

Basketball is doing better than they fared in football with only 1 win.

  4. Lad 9 says:

Jim I am with you on your prediction today. I haven’t been on the blog much this week, but how was your trip to the Pete on Tuesday? I go to most of the games, but we had a conflict with my son’s game that night or would have tried to look you up.

  5. Sam says:

Pitt grad here with a daughter on the Terps dance team. Who to root for? Go Pitt, I mean go Terps…Lets go for a great game.

  6. JohninOshkosh says:

I just know this Western Kentucky-Lousiana Lafayette game is going to go long….

  7. Arriba Wilver says:

Here’s my approach, Sam. As long as she’s there root for Maryland. Once she graduates, she’s an alumni, same as you and she’s on her own. ;-)

  8. Sam says:

good point. thanks. off comes the Maryland sweatshirt and on goes the Pitt one. Until 8:00 – then the pens gear comes out.

  9. Sam says:

Maryland held their midnight madness at Cole this year. What a fun old place.

  10. Arriba Wilver says:

My Virginia Tech Grad was horrified when we went to the Pitt-VaTech football game last year and I was rooting for Pitt. I said, hey . . .

  11. Sam says:

Yeah, and I guess it’s the Pitt education helping to pay for those MD and VaTech tuitions :)

  12. 21sthebest says:

    Triple OT.

  13. JohninOshkosh says:

    Here we go…

Maryland wins the tipoff and hits the first jumper. Appears to be an enthusiastic crowd at Comcast.

  14. 21sthebest says:

On ESPN News right now if anyone is wondering.

  15. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks, forgot to mention that.

  16. 21sthebest says:

Hopewell’s Shatori Walker the ACC rookie of the week for the second consecutive week. She plays for Maryland.

  17. theplanisworking says:

Pitt needs to weather this early storm. I knew Maryland would come out guns blazing………..

    Game back on ESPN2 now.

  18. JohninOshkosh says:

    First media timeout.

    Maryland 11 Pitt 6

Maryland off to a blistering start 5 of the 8 from the field. Pitt has forced a held ball and stopped a Maryland transition effort. Have looked OK defensively. Missed a couple of layups, but sluggish offensively in the early going.

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

    Pitt down by 1, 13-12.

Panthers firing at an anemic 29% and no treys attempted yet.

  20. JohninOshkosh says:

Pretty neat. Pitt did morning shoot around at Maryland’s famed DeMatha High School, alma mater of JRob.

  21. Arriba Wilver says:

Pitt at 28% shooting. Lucky to be 16-14.

  22. JohninOshkosh says:

“Ref, You Suck!” chant fills Comcast, or at least the mic behind the announcers.

C’mon Terrapin students, you can do better than that.

  23. JRay3 says:

Pitt 9-9 from the line, Maryland 0-2, one of the reasons Pitt has built 5 point lead.

Nice to get contributions from Artis and Randall, other guys stepping up until Patterson settled down.

  24. J Walter Weatherman says:

James Robinson getting better as season progresses. Cam Wright getting weaker. Just doesn’t look confident with the ball.

  25. JRay3 says:

Maryland gets a little sloppy and Pitt shows perfect transition breakout basketball, Terps TO, Panthers right back to 5 point lead.

  26. JohninOshkosh says:

A couple of nifty transition buckets and Panthers up by 5 forcing Maryland to call the TO.

  27. JRay3 says:

Cam Wright with the board and than runs the gym coast to coast for the and one and Pitt builds their largest lead of the game.

Team is just so sound defensively which buys them time to get offense going, just a tough out.

  28. theplanisworking says:

Have you ever seen the way maryland students act on a regular basis? Weren’t they warned last year about throwing things at opposing players?

  29. Jim S. says:

Loved the Pete, Lad. Loved it.

  30. JRay3 says:

Wright 4 points, 2 boards, 2 assists and a steal.

  31. JohninOshkosh says:

Really like Pitts mature play. Rarely, if ever, see them panic. Solid fundamentals and good free throw shooting. Finish on baskets well and always in good position for the boards. They do miss a fair share of gimmees at time, but eventually high percentage shots begin to fall and nice runs are put together.

  32. Jim S. says:

Order restored, at least for the time being. Pitt’s free throw shooting keeping them in the lead. Also, I feel like Pitt caught a couple of key breaks on calls for Patterson that led to 5 free throws.

  33. Jim S. says:

As I have been saying with this Pitt team, as long as Patterson and Robinson are the guys going to the line they will shoot just fine there.

  34. theplanisworking says:

They weathered the first 6 minutes very well………….

  35. JRay3 says:

Pitt now shooting 44% from field and are a perfect 16-16 from the line!

  36. JohninOshkosh says:

Doesn’t hurt the Terrapins like to do stupid things.

  37. theplanisworking says:

    That isn’t a typo!
    And, super basket by Patterson………….

  38. JRay3 says:

Lamar Patterson flashes the old Sam Young shot fake, drives the hoop and finishes, he is starting to get hot.

  39. JRay3 says:

Nine turnovers for the Panthers and a few of them have been on sloppy, lazy passes, a bit uncharacterisitc for this team.

Big bucket by Zanna near end of half.

  40. JohninOshkosh says:

Another royalty payment to House of Pain.

    They own college venues.

  41. JohninOshkosh says:

    Halftime in College Park, MD.

    Pitt 42 Maryland 37

  42. Arriba Wilver says:

Can’t complain about 5 point halftime lead.

  43. JRay3 says:

Panthers use a 21-14 rebounding edge, great shooting from the line and a couple of offensive spurts to take 5 point halftime lead.

Strange opening 20, as Pitt looked out of sync early and than looked like they were beginning to run away with it. Terps are not going away at home, going to take another solid half to walk away with yet another road ACC win.

  44. JohninOshkosh says:

These are the games you have to win to take the conference. No shame in losing at Carrier Dome, but need to make hay at schools like Maryland without being distracted by the big game Monday night.

So far so good for leaving College Park with a “W”.

  45. Jim S. says:

    Not at all, AW.

Higher scoring than I expected. A lot of foul shots will do that.

Foul distribution was very much in Pitt’s favor. I look for a slew of early 2nd half fouls on Pitt, because that’s how it goes usually in college hoops. Home teams don’t generally end up with many more fouls than the visitors. Refs get stat sheets at halftime as well, and they usually make amends. Of course, I guess it could play into the MD leaving the ACC so they are getting screwed at every turn conspiracy theory.

Patterson had a great last 10 minutes of that half. He must have hands like bear paws. Doesn’t the ball look like tiny in his hands?

Robinson had a couple of uncharacteristically bad plays, including one where he got the intentional call.

If Pitt figures out a way to deny the MD big guy the ball on the blocks, their offense consists mostly of chucking up 3′s and the occasional slash to the hoop.

I stick with my Pitt by 9 prediction. But, they need to shoot well from the field and tighten the defense. I don’t see them shooting 95% from the line again.

  46. JRay3 says:

Can’t wait to witness the scene from the Pete for Big Monday, Duke-Pitt, doesn’t get much better.

Duke obviously wasn’t looking ahead in their dismantling of FSU earlier, just hope these Panthers do their part and finish.

  47. JohninOshkosh says:

    Well, take it home, fellas.

Rare night with a babysitter and the wifey wants to go to dinner and a movie.

Can’t wait for Monday night but hope they take care of business tonight!

  48. Lad 9 says:

    Cool. Same here!

  49. theplanisworking says:

    Panthers by 10.
Just need to keep the foot on the pedal, and it’s off to the Pete for Monday Night with Dook !

  50. Lad 9 says:

Going to be something JRay. This is the most I have looked forward to going somewhere since the wild card game. Can’t wait to see what the Zoo has cooked up!

  51. Arriba Wilver says:

I know this isn’t a genius statement, but dang, Lamar is good.

  52. Dom says:

I’m kind of surprised that they’re playing this game in light of that tragedy earlier today.

  53. theplanisworking says:

They are cooking up Dookies on a stick! ;)
I so wish I could go to that game.

  54. JRay3 says:

JRob with the drive, layup to finish and Panthers up a dozen, biggest lead of the night…TO Terps as game is slipping away from them.

Is it just me or has JRob become even more assertive and stepped up his game from already high level since Durand Johnson injury?

  55. theplanisworking says:

    He has stepped it up.
    As has Wright.

  56. theplanisworking says:

Never understood why a player has to foul on a driving layup.
Just let them have the 2 points, and play solid D the next time.

  57. Lad 9 says:

Toughest ticket in Pittsburgh in a long time.

  58. J Walter Weatherman says:

So, Lamar Patterson is doing some pretty special things this season. One of the best passers I’ve ever seen in a Pitt uniform and his aggressiveness and shooting have taken a quantum leap this year.

Pretty bogus call on Zanna. He was protecting himself.

  59. JRay3 says:

Lamar Patterson adding to his ACC POY resume with tonight’s performance….26 points, 7 assists, 5 boards, the growth and development he has shown in four years just cements what Jamie Dixon can do with players.

  60. Barb says:

    Another typical Pittsburgh/Baltimore game.

  61. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++

  62. Barb says:

Has there been a Ray-Ray sighting at the game?

  63. theplanisworking says:

Nope. Still searching for the killer………

  64. Barb says:

+++++++++++++++++++ Just read Wilson is now the RB coach for the Vikings. At least he wasn’t hired by the ratbirds.

  65. JRay3 says:

Nothing ever comes easy on the road but the Panthers find a way and earn their third road ACC win and improve to 18-2, 6-1 in league play.

The fifth year seniors once again lead the way as Patterson and Zanna combine for 44 of Pitt’s 83 points.

Big Monday in Pittsburgh versus Duke should be ruckus.

  66. theplanisworking says:

    Hard-fought win tonight.
Actually, harder than it should have been.
But, a big road W nonetheless.

    On to Monday and DOOK!
    GO PITT !!

  67. Arriba Wilver says:

It wasn’t as close as the score, but Pitt surprisingly not real basketball smart in the last 4-5 minutes.

  68. 21sthebest says:

Dukes Derrick Colter hits a crazy 3 at the buzzer for the win, seconds after blowing 2 free throws which would’ve given the Dukes the lead.

  69. Notice how Pitt had trouble holding onto the ball after james Robinson fouled out late.

He is quite the key, with Lamar.

  70. Arriba Wilver says:

    Yep.
