NHL trade deadline 2014

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

The NHL’s trade deadline is 3 p.m. today. As always, feel free to use this as a discussion thread, as well as a place to share links to any trade-related news or speculation.

Here are the Trib’s Penguins page and Chipped Ice blog. Our Rob Rossi and Josh Yohe are covering this like their lives depend on it.

Here’s the NHL’s official trade deadline page.

Here’s TSN’s unparalleled league-wide coverage.

  1. JohninOshkosh says:

I love the NHL trade deadline. Favorite trade deadline in all of sports. Names, nay big names, are flipped and dealt. Not a lot of prospect hording. Things actually get accomplished, contracts are shed and needs are addressed. Long tradition of it, too, in hockey.

That’s what happens in a league with a firm salary cap and the ability to trade draft picks.

Been in and out of the TSN site Dejan references above all day. Best overall site for hockey in general. Outstanding.

  2. Are stewie and goc penguins yet?

  3. Damon says:

They’re still there….as are a lot of players surprisingly. I guess teams are playing chicken right now, and this last hour coming up should be crazy. No way can Buffalo, Calgary and the Isles get nothing for their players…

Side note – when you say Stewie, I keep getting a vision of Stewie on the Family Guy.

  4. Andrew says:

Not sure if it has affected anyone else but I notice that the Triblive blogs crash frequently when a new post is put up on the Chipped Ice Blog.

  5. Damon says:

    Now that you mention it….

  6. Jandy says:

  7. aaron says:

Rossi reported pens werent willing to pay heavy price for Hemsky. As reported by NHL main site Ottawa got him for a 3rd round pick in 2014 and a 5th rounder in 2015. That doesn’t seem too heavy.

  8. JohninOshkosh says:

I thought the Kings strengthened themselves for a Cup run.

Gotta believe Thomas Vanek goes. He was a healthy scratch last night in Dejan’s paradise.

  9. aaron says:

Personally I think the pens should hang tight. With dupuis, Letang, and Martin hurt and the bottom six as weak as it is this team is not a cup contender this year. Keep the players and picks and hope for better luck next season.

  10. Damon says:

Makes me think they really weren’t too keen on him…plus they are probably still hanging on to their picks in case the Kesler thing breaks.

  11. aaron says:

Good call. You can tell Shero isn’t sold on this team as a legit contender with his focus only on players that are not “rentals”…..he is looking towards next year, which is why he won’t trade Pouliot.

  12. Milo Hamilton says:

Pens interested in Ed Kranepool, er David Legwand.

  13. Damon says:

Pouliot seems to be the line in the sand. Rossi is saying everyone is telling Shero to keep him – his is supposed to be a super star in their eyes. No sense trading that asset for someone who could leave in two years.

  14. I see where you’re coming from, but with 41 wins and the players they have, shouldn’t they put forth every effort to win now and not look to next season?

Just a question, not a sentiment. I’m a prospect horder myself in baseball, so I see what you mean, but Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and the core are not getting any younger or healthier as the years go by.

  15. BigMC says:

Gotta make a move for a Dupuis replacement and another D man. Cap space is there per placing Duper and Tanger on the LTIR. Gibbons would give a much needed boost to the third line with his intense play and speed

  16. JohninOshkosh says:

Lot of people on this blog throwing in the towel on a team currently leading the Eastern Conference.

  17. Milo Hamilton says:

Pens get Marcel Goc for 2 picks.

  18. aaron says:

Very legitimate point with the age of the core. If they can deal now without sacrificing too much of tomorrow then sure, go for it. However, to deal someone like Pouliot to pull off the Keeler deal doesn’t make a ton of sense even though he would be around for two years.

I think we are more than an upgrade on 3rd line center away from the cup.

    What’s your take?

  19. aaron says:

    Kesler. Darn auto correct

  20. BigMC says:

If shero makes a couple moves, there is no reason why they couldn’t make a cup run. Last nights game showed how they can light the lamp at any time. Add two more ingredients and that could be a constant. Any thoughts on the play of Orpik and Scud?

  21. aaron says:

They are a good team, but can you honestly say they have the defensive play and 3rd and 4th line depth to beat the top 3-4 teams in the west?

  22. theplanisworking says:

    HockeyMonster called this !

  23. Milo Hamilton says:

    Yohe says they aren’t done.

  24. aaron says:

If they could move those two for something….. anything and role with the youngsters they have…..that could be interesting!

  25. aaron says:

  26. JohninOshkosh says:

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

Awesome job. No one in the media had that.

  28. Jandy says:

    Good job, Monster mash :)

  29. I am not well-versed enough on it, aaron. I know baseball and football, but I’m an unknowing fan in hockey. I leave that to the experts. That’s why I never opin on player moves. But your logic is sound and I see where you’re comin from.

I wouldn’t give away the store if we can’t make a legit run at the cup. I’ve been a Pirate fan for so long, I just hate to see an opportunity to win saved if it is a true opportunity.

  30. Jandy says:

he’s good at face offs I believe.

  31. Damon says:

    His tweet:

Pens could move Sutter in a Kesler deal, have Goc as third line center, play Kesler with Sid this year, then back to center next year.

  32. Milo Hamilton says:

They needed to get a 3rd line center if they want to play Kesler with Sid.

  33. Jandy says:

I wouldn’t give away the store, anyway.

  34. JohninOshkosh says:

    His life depends on it!

  35. aaron says:

They paid for Goc what the asking price was for Hemsky….they must have preferred Goc. I don’t know much about either player. Do you guys think Goc was the better move?

  36. tpbco says:

what’s he (Goc) bringing to the table?

  37. Now bring me stewie!

    Victory will be mine!

  38. Thank you thank you :)

  39. aaron says:

The plot thickens! This is why Shero is in charge and not me…lol…..which is something we should all be thankful for!

  40. BigMC says:

Not a fan of the Goc trade, boosts 3rd line, definitely not the dupuis replacement. Stay tuned I suppose!

  41. Defensive duper replacement and good on draws. He play LW or center. PK specialist.

  42. What picks we give up for goc?

  43. aaron says:

When all of the youngsters were playing they were playing disciplined team/system defense with aggression and speed. I love Orpik and Scuderi, but they are way past their prime.

  44. theplanisworking says:

This is clearly a move with Boston in mind.
He is a rental, so I think this move was directly related to that.

  45. aaron says:

    3rd and 5th in 2014 I believe.

  46. theplanisworking says:

    Family Guy Stewie? ;)

  47. aaron says:

Shero has to have something up his sleeve. He always does!

  48. theplanisworking says:

I guess we will see how much Vancouver wants for Kesler.
    King’s ransoms need not apply.

  49. No problem with that. Stewart wearing black n gold yet?

  50. BigMC says:

    Vanek or Kessler next

  51. theplanisworking says:

LA Kings win “most active day” award so far.

  52. Jandy says:

  53. JohninOshkosh says:

Today is a blast. Don’t tell my boss but not getting much work done.

  54. Jandy says:

    5th is 2015

  55. Jandy says:

    oops. they are reversed…3rd is 2015, 5th is 2014

  56. aaron says:

Do the pens have any interest in Moulson? Seems Buffalo is shopping everyone.

  57. Jandy says:

I’m busting my butt…working…then checking in here…going nuts lol. But yeah, this is fun :)

  58. Jandy says:

    yeah..not high picks…so good job.

  59. JohninOshkosh says:

But what are my Wild doing, Jandy ? Got Halak. Now they need to get Vanek in St. Paul.

  60. Milo Hamilton says:

Return for Goc is a 5th round pick this year & a 3rd rounder next year.

  61. Damon says:

Hearing Pens also inquiring about Legwand from Nashville if Kesler deal doesn’t go through. ALso heard they aren’t interested in Vanek.

Man, Buffalo and the Isles have to be getting sooooooo tight right now….

  62. Jandy says:

  63. Jandy says:

Traded F Chad Rau to San Jose for F Curt Gogol. And no, I have no idea lol

  64. Jandy says:

They got Bryzgalov from Edmonton for a 4th Round pick in2014

  65. Jandy says:

Glad they’re not interested in Vanek.

  66. JohninOshkosh says:

Not Chad Rau! There goes the Cup! Nooooooooooooooo! :)

  67. Jandy says:

    :ducking behind Monster mash:

  68. Tom says:

Vanek to us for Sutter and 2014 1rst rounder??

  69. Tom says:

Now saying that was a fake…..ohhh the horror of draft day

  70. theplanisworking says:

Might be better for them to wait until the offseason, rather than have a fire sale. Just a hunch.

  71. JohninOshkosh says:

Oooooops, I meant Bryzgalov, not Halak. Easier to type :)

  72. Jandy says:

    LOL indeed it is. :)

  73. JohninOshkosh says:

  74. Jandy says:

Never cared for him. I dunno…just one of those “female intuition” things.
    I don’t think he’d fit in here.

  75. Damon says:

    Don’t feel bad – Rossi fell for it too….he even re-tweeted it….

  76. Jandy says:

    Down to 30 minutes!!!!!!!!!!

  77. Damon says:

Moulson may be headed to Wild….

  78. Milo Hamilton says:

The Mild are in heavy on Matt Moulson.

  79. Jandy says:

    Tim Thomas to Dallas…oh my

  80. baldy says:

    Tim Thomas to Dallas

  81. People, goc is here to play with Sutter not replace him. Stewart for sid needs to be the target now. Period.

  82. Aaron says:

Anyone else getting the feel that Goc is going to be it for us today?

  83. Jandy says:

    never underestimate Ray Shero

  84. theplanisworking says:

I would be ok with that.
No giving away the future, or giving away many players.

    No trading just to trade.

  85. JohninOshkosh says:

I see that. That would be a good pick up. Tough being in the West. Have to contemplate playoff series with Kings, Hawks, Ducks, Sharks etc etc etc.

It’s tough to be Mild in that conference. :)

  86. JohninOshkosh says:

He can work on his Kennedy conspiracy theory and play hockey at the same time.

  87. Jandy says:

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

    Not at all.

  89. Aaron says:

at 2:59 pm est it will be announced Ray Shero was able to acquire both Vanek and Kesler for a bag of pucks, two packs of gum, and a handshake.

  90. theplanisworking says:

  91. chethejet1 says:

Goc allows Sutter to move to RW with Sid perhaps. I suspect Shero wants to add another D man and another winger like Stempniak perhaps.Cap is tight unless Letang is LTR and Martin as well to afford Kesler. Sutter can play RW and the Pens get another third line RW and not give up a first or any young defensemen or Sutter. NO one out there is good enough to make the Pens a cup favorite with this defense. Since I don’t expect Letang to return this year, Pens are not good enough to win the cup.

  92. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s either the calm before the storm or we’re fizzling to the finish.

  93. The Steelers have just agreed to three year deals with Troy Polamalu and Heath Miller through 2016.

  94. Jandy says:

  95. Jandy says:

Wrong, thread, James…and it’s been mentioned on the other thread :)

  96. Damon says:

Weird because most of the big names are still out there. May be bargain time….

  97. Milo Hamilton says:

The plan is for Goc to center the 3rd line for the rest of this year while Kesler takes Dupuis’ spot On Sid’s line. Next year, Kesler goes back to center. That is the reason they got Goc. If they can’t get Kesler they’ll find some use for Goc on that 3rd line.

  98. theplanisworking says:

Jandy, doesn’t matter……… all the threads were hijacked today. :)

  99. Jandy says:

  100. Jandy says:

    10 minutes left!!!!

  101. Milo Hamilton says:

And make no mistake about it, if they don’t get Kesler they will be very, very disappointed.

  102. Jandy says:

A lot of teams will be disappointed then…there’s only one kesler!

  103. JohninOshkosh says:

Is it like baseball-if teams are finalizing deals, the clock continues to run?

  104. Jandy says:

it has to be signed…but may not be reported for a bit of time after. it has to be registered with the Big House.

  105. Jim S. says:

Yeah, who was that jerk that broke false news about the Pens acquiring Vanek on the Bucs game thread? ;-)

  106. Jandy says:

    Some Lunatic! ;)

  107. theplanisworking says:

    From the website………

Moderator: Guest – the 3 PM ET deadline is a firm one, however, the requirement is that trade calls must be scheduled before that deadline. Trades are often completed after the deadline.

  108. Milo Hamilton says:

News will still be trickling in past 3:00.

  109. Jandy says:

    just what I said LOL

  110. Damon says:

Want to go nuts? Here’s a tweet from Yohe:

Annual reminder: Trades often aren’t announced until close to an hour after the deadline.

  111. theplanisworking says:

The same jerk who will be roasted and toasted by a torch….. ;)

  112. Jandy says:

    5 minutes!!

  113. Jim S. says:

I think they have to pick up everyone’s Bingo card by 3:00. Then, they get it approved later.

  114. DJ says:

So no Neal Huntington sending in paperwork a couple minutes late?

  115. A1C McG says:

just read that the pens are still working one more deal, how much magic does shero have up his sleeve

  116. Jandy says:

Damon, that is true…unfortunately././but they must be registered before 3pm

  117. Jandy says:

  118. Milo Hamilton says:

With all the Pens & Steelers news today It’s only fair I update the Buccos. Today the Pirates have done nothing.

  119. Wild Bill says:

Heard a while ago the Flyers were out of the Kesler running. Makes me think they’re still in it.

  120. Jim S. says:

Whoah! I wouldn’t want to be him.

  121. Jandy says:

+++++ Planimal, get out the pitchforks and torches ;)

  122. buggee says:

Wonder if anyone has approached the Pens about an offer for Geno

  123. Jandy says:

  124. Jim S. says:

    Non-catcher Chris Stewart, monster?

  125. Wild Bill says:

Woah! That would have to be some offer!

  126. Jandy says:

    waste of time ;)

  127. Not his fault . . . he didn’t know how to use the fax machine.

Best Management Team in Baseball, not best secretaries in baseball.

    At least that’s Franks’s story . . . . .

  128. theplanisworking says:

Better hide in a Subaru…… those things save lives. :)

  129. Jandy says:

  130. theplanisworking says:

  131. Today they saved $$$$$ by not signing AJ Burnett.

That’s been their mantra since November.

  132. JohninOshkosh says:

This was a funny minithread run! Thanks for the laughs!

  133. theplanisworking says:

We now have indisputable proof that Buggee is Frank Coonelly.

    Etch an aluminum bottle !!!

  134. Milo Hamilton says:

    November of 2006 ?

  135. Jandy says:

    hey, that’s MY word! :P

  136. Damon says:

Rumor the Bruins got Maszaros from Philly….the D they wanted.

  137. theplanisworking says:

    November 1993.

  138. Bizrow says:

I hope its safer over here ;-)

  139. Jandy says:

Past the buzzer…we shall see what we shall see :)

  140. DJ says:

If we move Tanner Glass after the game he had last night, I’m gonna . . . well, I’ll do something.

  141. Jandy says:

hey, don’t let them grumpy ol’ men skeer ya, Biz! ;)

  142. A1C McG says:

does anyone think st. louis going to the rangers may have force sheros hand to offer too much for kesler

  143. Jandy says:

You and me both! I’ll get out the size 9 wides!

  144. Jandy says:

Boston did indeed get Meszaros for a 3rd round pick from Philly

  145. Jandy says:

Rags acquire Diaz from Canucks for a 5th round pick

  146. Damon says:

Canadian reporter saying only Canuck move was Diaz to Rangers, so Kesler wasn’t moved. We shall see if that is true….

  147. Milo Hamilton says:

No one takes the Rangers seriously, do they ? Adding a 50 year old shouldn’t change that.

  148. Aaron says:

Just heard on that Lee Stempniak from Calgary may be coming to Pittsburgh

  149. Bizrow says:

    The “rumors” came from ESPN

    Nuttin since then

  150. Jandy says:

Monster, didn’t you bring up his name too?

  151. buggee says:

I think a psychiatrist would be in order

  152. Damon says:

Rossi just tweeted Kesler was not moved….

  153. Aaron says:

NHL,com is reporting that Moulson and Cody McCormick went to Minnesota for undisclosed picks and Torey Mitchell

  154. Jandy says:

I’m telling ya..for a little guy, St. Louis has a big attitude.

  155. Jandy says:

    There ya go, Oshie!

  156. Aaron says:

    Confirmed on

  157. They lived! Car is trashed, but they lived! Cue heart-rendering music.

  158. Jandy says:

  159. theplanisworking says:

    Vanek reportedly traded.
    Waiting to see where.

  160. Aaron says: is quoting TSN that Vanek has been traded, waiting to hear to whom and for whom/what

  161. Jim S. says:

Rangers? If we are making moves out of fear of the Rangers, then there are 15 other teams at least that we have to be doing the same thing for.

  162. DJ says:

I wonder if Torts had a final say, given the fact we’re an arrogant organization.

  163. Aaron says:

What are the odds that Shero pulled one off for Vanek?

  164. Jandy says:

  165. Jim S. says:

Is he the righty reliever for the Bucs? He was good last year, but expendable.

  166. Jandy says:

    arrogant? us???
let me at Torts, I’ll straighten this dude up! ;)

  167. Aaron says:

Quite possibly one of the most annoying people ever. Not really an opinion as I believe that represents a fact.

  168. Jandy says:

    never underestimate Shero

  169. Milo Hamilton says:

Rossi says Canucks ownership nixed any Kesler trade. That tells me Mike Gillis is in trouble.

  170. Jandy says:

  171. DJ says:

Well, maybe we should have been nicer to him.

  172. theplanisworking says:

New York media will chew him up and spit him out !

  173. Jandy says:

  174. Jim S. says:

    Oh boy!

  175. Aaron says: is reporting the Pens get Spencer Marchack?

  176. theplanisworking says:

  177. Jandy says:

yeah, maybe we should have tarred and feathered him…really nice :)

  178. DJ says:

If Philly didn’t get him, I’m okay with it.

  179. Jim S. says:

Did you steal it from Ron Swanson of Parks and Rec, Jandy? He uses it all the time – to great hilarity.

  180. Jandy says:

  181. Jandy says:

  182. Aaron says:

  183. A1C McG says:

as much as i am not a fan of vanek, he can score and he does it often against us so if he goes somewhere i hope it is out west and we dont see him the rest of this yr

  184. theplanisworking says:

Never underestimate the power of a good torch, Jim.
    See where this ended up?

  185. buggee says:

Their upgrades will be from within the organization with assets already in place.

  186. Damon says:

Told #pens felt they had substantial offer to #Canucks. Feel ownership nixed plans for trade that would have sent Kesler to Pitt.

  187. Aaron says:

NHLcom saying Vanek goes to Montreal

  188. Jandy says:

that was supposedly done a few weeks ago, Aaron. Minor league deal

  189. Jim S. says:

They still have fax machines? I’ve heard of them.

  190. Aaron says: is reporting Vanek went to Montreal.

  191. DJ says:

    Vanek to Habs.

  192. Jandy says:

    Legwand to Detroit

  193. Wild Bill says:

    Are the Pens done?

  194. Aaron says:

So far Goc and Machacek is a bit underwhelming, no?

  195. Jandy says:

    indeed…sit tight.

  196. Aaron says:

ESPN is reporting that the Habs got Vanek for a 2nd round pick and a prospect

  197. Jim S. says:

It always goes back to the pitchforks and torches, doesn’t it?

  198. Jandy says:

    doubt it

  199. Aaron says:

Just waiting to hear some major move that Shero pulled off at the wire….just feels like it’s coming.

  200. buggee says:

methinks jandyHammer would be whupping the torts outta torterella. if she were caught would jandyhammer be charged with torts?

I’m sorry, I just cant stop myself.

    “Welcome to AA”
“Hi, my name is Frank and I’m a… a… uh Neil! Can you tell me what I am again?”

    Etch it bagabag

  201. Jim S. says:

Ok, folks. Join us back here exactly one year from now for 3 hours again … if your hearts can take it!

  202. DJ says:

I don’t think we had a 2nd round pick this year because I think it left for Doug Murray.

  203. Damon says:

Only big name not announced is Cammaleri….

  204. Jandy says:

    I forgot about him

  205. cosmo says:

    Vanek to canadiens

  206. Brandie says:

I would have taken Vanek if they would have thrown in some better ice making equipment. Guess I will go and do the Goc Roc.

  207. Aaron says:

Wow…the Isles gave up a 1st, 2nd, and Moulson for Vanek and get nothing back but a 2nd and a prospect…..oops.

  208. Jandy says:

  209. Aaron says:

We didnt…we did indeed spend it on Murray last year.

  210. Brandie says:

I am underwhelmed by the lack of interest on this very subject of deadline trades. :)

  211. cosmo says:

    Legwand to red wings

  212. Made me laugh!!!

Then it made me cry . . . because I realized you were not kidding!

  213. Wild Bill says:

Garth will be looking for work very soon.

  214. Jandy says:

    Cammaleri wasn’t traded either.

  215. DJ says:

I still have nightmares of him at the right dot with not a Pens player within 15 feet.

He may have the biggest head for a short guy that I have ever seen.

  216. Aaron says:

Vanek has a history of scoring against the Bruins, would have been nice to have someone on our team who can actually score against Rask.

  217. Jandy says:

    Oh yeah I agree

  218. Wild Bill says:

Hope the Habs get the B’s in the playoffs before we do.

  219. buggee says:

maybe we should have pinched a loaf in his hat

  220. DJ says:

    An adjustment perhaps?

    Not Dan’s finest hour . . . or series.

  221. DJ says:

On the nighmares or the head . . . or both?

  222. Brandie says:

    Thank you Bugg Minster Fuller.

  223. Jandy says:

    BOTH! lol

St. Louis ties him for the big head.

  224. Milo Hamilton says:

That Machacek trade was made February 6th.

  227. Jim S. says:

BTW, that was the reaction to Ray Shero today from Pens fans.

And, Jamie Dixon from Pitt fans.

  228. Brandie says:

Seriously Plan…not sure why DK even threw up a thread!!!! ;)

  229. theplanisworking says:

    I’M RICH!

  230. theplanisworking says:

As long as no one peed in your cereal, I guess it’s ok. ;)

  231. Wild Bill says:

Was that mob about the Pens or the Pirates’ off season??

  232. Brandie says:

How about the Steelers past season?

  233. theplanisworking says:

    Both. ;)

  234. Milo Hamilton says:

Still haven’t heard the all clear.

  235. Milo Hamilton says:

Maybe the Lee Stempniak rumors are true. Who couldn’t use another Chuck Kobasew ?

  236. Wild Bill says:

  237. DJ says:

They’re putting the final touches on the press script.

“We had a significant offer on the table involving major pieces, but Torts convinced ownership we’re an arrogant organization that always whines and gets their way . . . “

  238. A1C McG says:

so is it safe to say the team who had the best year outside of the team that wins the cup is the sabres…amazing job of selling off everything this yr and getting a ton of picks and prospects. should be a quick rebuild for them.

  239. Jandy says:

    The Kings did quite well.

  240. Jandy says:

OK Peeps, I gotta finish up here so I can go home…catch ya’ll sooner or later :)

  241. Aaron says:

    Catch ya later, Jandy.

  242. Wild Bill says:

Pegula is no fool, and he’s not foolin’ as an owner.

  243. Jandy says:

    Thanks Aaron :)

  244. theplanisworking says:

So, millions of unsubstantiated rumors out there today.

Pens did ok by getting Goc.
They didn’t give up a lot, that’s a good thing.

    St Louis…….. what a jerk.
    many names didn’t go.
Many names were had for a bag of pucks.

Now you see why I call it the silly season?

  245. Wild Bill says:

Ok, so two picks for Marcel Goc, who is a center, and playing on an expiring contract. What am I missing here??

  246. Hell no…dont want stempniak. Hope that deal falls thru….someone sabotage the fax machine…

  247. theplanisworking says:

I think this was to address playing the Bruins.
Their centers killed us in the playoffs on faceoffs.

    Also, improves the third line.
    That’s all I got.

  248. Aaron says:

Kind of ironic that we sign Iginla last year and didn’t really need a right winger and this year we desperately need a top right winger and don’t get one.

  249. Someone pull the plug on Stempniak…what could’ve buffalo possibly wanted for stewie?

  250. scapper says:

Anyone hear that the Caps got Halak from Buffalo? Sorry if that’s already posted above. Didn’t see it on but did see it…somewhere.

  251. Aaron says:

    confirmed on and ESPN

  252. Wild Bill says:

I guess they are gonna use him as a wing?

  253. Damon says:

So what we are saying is Brian Gibbons will be Sid’s RW in the playoffs barring a Beau Bennett healing miracle?

  254. Jim S. says:

Torts would not have wanted Kesler to come to the Pens for any return.

  255. JohninOshkosh says:

I’ll go on record now. 2014 SC Finals: Wild vs. Habs. :)

  256. He can play LW or C. No worries.

  257. JohninOshkosh says:

    He’s a Cap, Scap.

  258. Jim S. says:

    A bit of both.

Actually, throw in the Steelers and Pitt hoops as well.

  259. DJ says:

You got that right, Jim, if he had any say. Not sure.

  260. DJ says:

    Here you go, HM:

Rossi: GM Ray Shero’s developmental staff has lobbied hard that D Derrick Pouliot not be included in any deal. Pouliot, a first-round pick in 2012, is viewed by several members of the staff as perhaps being ready to make an Olli Maatta-like jump to the NHL next season – if not for the start, then sometime during.

    I got my wish.

  261. d says:

Was really expecting more from THE GREAT, ALL IN, Ray Shero? Guess he didn’t feel like going “ALL IN” this year? Can’t understand why not:)

  262. Yup. Guess the right deal wasn’t there. Didnt wanna trade pouliot for kesler as part of a package. 1 for 1 is different. Didn’t want to trade pouliot for stewart either but figured thats what it would take to get him. Would love to hear what buffalo wanted for him.

Regarding pouliot stepping in like Maatta, all i have to say is that the pens are going to be in for a surprise. Harrington closer to being ready. IMO.

  263. Sarah says:

  264. JohninOshkosh says:

    Lee Stempniak to Pittsburgh.

    There you go, Milo.

  265. Sarah says:

I’m still waiting for Despres for Stempniak! What’dya say Peeps??

  266. Sarah says:

I’m sure they know more about Letangs status than we do. That could have something to do w hanging on to him.

  267. Jim S. says:

Osh, who is the Avatar? Grace Kelly? Doris Day?

  268. Sarah says:

    From lebrun:
The Stempniak to Pittsburgh trade awaits a trade call still. Obviously the league is backed up on these things.

  269. Andrew says:

    TSN says 3rd round pick

  270. DJ says:

I’m thinking that, in the end, Pouliot may have been included and Canucks ownership nixed the deal. Either way, result the same.

I look forward to the day he patrols the blue line in a Pens sweater.

  271. So Goc is the only get or did I miss something in these 280 posts?

  272. Sarah says:

Yes just saw! And apparently Despres on the ice for practice, so perhaps he dodged the bullet….for now.

  273. Sarah says:

Stempniak for a 3rd. Cos we needed another Chucky K!!!

  274. Jim S. says:

I kind of wondered that all along, DJ. Either he was going to find a way for us to not get him, or Vancouver was going to squeeze extra hard just because of Torts’ hatred of us. I’m glad we didn’t pay the price for Kesler.

  275. Stuart says:

20 to 5 and no final wrap up from “all over it” Rob Rossi and Josh Yohe.

  276. theplanisworking says:

  277. Sorry I replaced your great uncle with your grandfather last night, Stu. Aged memory embellishment. Milo would apprectiate either I suspect.

  278. Sarah says:

I kid, I dunno much about Stemp. I think he’s a solid 3rd liner from what I’m reading. Anyway our top line resembles more of an NHL top 9 now.
Here’s hoping BB gets better fast!

  279. Sarah says:

    Top NINE. Sheesh.

  280. Andrew says:

I think if Despres is not reassigned and on the roster when all the deadline paper work clears, he is not eligible to play in AHL the rest of the year. Which could mean something or just more time in Mario’s booth.

  281. Sarah says:

So… we have ANY picks left?

  282. d says:

yeah, I think we still have a 7th rounder in 2018

  283. or “appreciate”

  284. d says:

    I wouldn’t hold your breath

  285. Sarah says:

    Too true….

  286. Sarah says:

Gibbons and Despres back to WBS roster.

    So who does Sid get?
    Goc or Stemp???

  287. Sarah says:

Reassigned as of 3 PM. Back to WBS for playoffs.

  288. chethejet1 says:

goc is a solid third line player. Good get. He may want to extend here as a back up option since Sutter is a RFA. Stempniak is better that what has been on the wings and gives the Pens an off wig shot as well. Bennett hopefully returns healthy in four weeks. Pens have options now in the third and fourth lines as as I posted Sutter can play RW on the first line and you will see a good hockey player. He has been saddled with plugs this year but compared to giving up that package for a third line center making 5 million was unnecessary. Pens need a winger for Sid, not Kesler next year. Love they kept Pouliot as he will be a big time player. Shero had to be nuts to trade that upside for a ham and egger center.

  289. Stuart says:

No sweat Rev, I didn’t reply to him till about two hours late. My great uncle was my grandfather’s youngest brother.

  290. d says:

Six in one and half dozen in the other

  291. Sarah says:

Maybe Sutter will show us something. Guess we’ll see. But still no real RW for Sid.
And I’ve little faith BB will fill that spot even if healthy, because Bylsma.

  292. Stuart says:

Hey Lunes, is it now safe to say it’s Goc and Stempniak as final gets?

  293. Andrew says:

    Just saw that.

  294. That gives me an excuse.

  295. Sarah says:

Yep. RS hangs on to poulot and Despres back to WBS

  296. Official press release from Penguins:

“We came close to obtaining multiple players today. We offered more money and/or more years than other teams.

1/ One guy wanted to play closer to home
2/ One guy wanted to stay with the club he was familiar with
3/ One guy received more years than we were willing to chance
4/ One guy didn’t like the idea of playing in Pittsburgh
5/ One guy wanted to play in a better hitters’ park
6/ One guy wanted to play in a better pitchers’ park

Thusly, we finished 2nd on all 4 trades/signings. Just missed!!”

Wait . . . . that press release wasn’t from the Pens———it was the default press release from the Pirates.

  297. Stuart says:

    Stempniak’s +/- is minus 21! This is Sid’s RW?

  298. Stuart says:

Thanks Sarah, certainly hope the Sutter for Sid rumor is accurate. Saw Stepniak’s +/-.

  299. Milo Hamilton says:

They’re just giving him Kobasew’s jersey. No one will know the difference.

  300. Stuart says:

    Was he “pre-waived” also?

  301. Barb says:

Jim his Avatar is Kim Novak. Loved her in Vertigo with James Stewart.

  302. Sarah says:

    Good lord

  303. Jim S. says:

It was a stealth cost-cutting move, recommended by Bob Nutting, to ensure that they don’t need as many scouts going forward.

  304. Jim S. says:

Darn, I missed my guess, Barb! I suppose Kim Novak makes sense given the Academy Awards incident with her.

Grace Kelly was great in a couple of Hitchcock movies that I can recall off the top of my head – Dial M for Murder, Rear Window. She might be the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. And, since she’s from before my time and died young, I don’t think I ever saw her until after she had passed. Just stunning.

  305. Jim S. says:

I’d like to see Sutter play with Sid. It’s mostly been orange traffic cones filling in since Duper went down.

  306. theplanisworking says:

In regards to Stempniak, and the complaints about his +/- ……

you do realize that he was playing for CALGARY!
CALGARY people! BOTTOM 5, one of the worst teams in the league CALGARY !!!

    Perspective, peeps.
He may or may not be any good, but it is silly to determine a trade based on +/- playing for one of the worst teams in the league !

  307. Jim S. says:

Still think your Avatar is “bad*ss”, Stuart!

  308. Sarah says:

I know I know Plan…..he’s second to last on the whole team though! (Guess who’s last?)

  309. theplanisworking says:

Maybe a change of scenery, and an upgrade of talent will help.

I am just glad Shero did not get insane with the trades……….. giving up a lot for a little.

  310. Arriba Wilver says:

I share your thoughts on Grace, Jim.

  311. Arriba Wilver says:

  312. Andrew says:

No idea on how the Pens plan to use, but I agree Stempniak, his on-ice PDO is 937, and save% .881, bottom five of any forward with 400 minutes ice time. He may be giving up some good scoring opportunities but that plus/minus is misleading only the Islanders have had worse goal-tending.

  313. theplanisworking says:

Like I said, I don’t know what he will do here, he might stink, but +/- can’t be used as the whole picture.

If the Pens were that scared of his play, they would not have traded for him. They must have seen something……..

  314. Sarah says:

I actually thought of him as a more physical puck retriever for Malkin. And JJ goes to 3rd line……

Does anyone think BB is pencilled in for Sid’s RW when and if he ever gets healthy?

  315. Aaron says:

If he would have demonstrated this kind of restraint last year and not messed with the chemistry, perhaps….?

    Just sayin…

  316. d says:

Well, the Pens didn’t get any grittier, any more skilled, or any tougher to play against today. The only thing we fans can be happy about after today is that THE GREAT, ALL IN Ray Shero didn’t give away the farm! One, maybe Two rounds and that should do it for hockey this year. Net, net, not impressed, TGALI Ray Shero is starting to lose his MOJO???

  317. Sarah says:

His Corsi is not bad for being on an awful team and he plays tougher minutes vs top lines.

Apparently he has a fantastic shot… I guess I hope they try him w Crosby, cos that is what the line has been missing since Hossa….

  318. Sarah says:

So Shero offered Sutter, a 1st this yr, and a 2nd next yr, for Kessler.
    No Despres, no Bennett.

Wow. No wonder VAN said no.

WOnder if they think they can get him post season.

  319. Sarah says:

So much for Rossi saying Shero would beat any offer.

  320. Brandie says:

It just was not in the cards. Too many injuries and too many unknowns for Shero to move top names to get Kesler. Shero is too wily to not try anything in the post season. I would not count the Pens out of the race.

Hope Stempniak works out. In the meantime Goc and Roll People!

  321. Brandie says:

I am by no means an expert…I think that the problem is trying to get a Wing who can keep up with Crosby’s speed as well as the way he anticipates the way plays unfold. Just as Sid’s wing is about to make a move, Sid is already 10 moves ahead. You can’t teach that. You can either hope to get someone to keep up with his flow or get left in the dust.

  322. Andrew says:

I agree that is why Iginla was not a good pick up, when you want to get the puck north, his lack of speed was exposed.

  323. Andrew says:

I did/do not understand the infatuation with Kesler, he brings a $5 million cap hit for the next two years. With Letang’s cap hit increasing and Scuderi’s contract the Penguins would have only increased the difficulty in signing/adding depth to the bottom 6.

  324. Brandie says:

I think that is why if Kesler has a spot on the Pens that is best decided list season when Letang’s health issues and where he is headed may be clearer and maybe done other decisioncan be made about the Legend of Rob Scuderi.

    Greetings Andrew.

  325. Eric Bowser says:

I’m quite happy the Pens didn’t acquire Ryan Kesler, kept Derrick Pouliot, and brought in some depth to help the team for the stretch run and playoffs.

Marcel Goc to wear jersey number 57 and Lee Stempniak gets number 22.

The lines that I’d like to see but I know won’t happen…
    Kunitz – Crosby – Megna
    Jokinen – Malkin – Neal
    Gibbons – Sutter – Stempniak
    Glass – Goc – Vitale

What I expect to see from Bylsma…
    Kunitz – Crosby – Gibbons
    Jokinen – Malkin – Neal
    Goc – Sutter – Stempniak
    Glass – Vitale – Adams

Figure we’ll see a lot of mixing and matching of line combinations with Crosby and Malkin playing together more often at even strenth, Stempniak getting a shot on Sid’s line, and possibly having Sutter get some shifts on the second line.

Remaining draft picks for 2014 and 2015
    2014: 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th
    2015: 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th

  326. Brandie says:

The tradition of getting potential foundation pieces for minimal output in the form of picks continues. Do you think either one has the potential to be made permanent?

  327. DJ says:

I’m certainly pleased. Kesler for Sutter, either Depres or Dumoulin and a 3rd, I would have done that.

  328. Sutter is a restricted free agent after this season. He is going to cost more than his present $2 1/2 million next season——probably $4 — 4 1/2 million——and more the next season.

Kesler would not have been a much larger hit.

  329. Eric Bowser says:

Anything is possible and I think a lot hinges on what the contract demands are for Brandon Sutter. He’s a pure third line center, nice player but he’s not exactly hard to play against and having two skilled centers in the top two lines, you’d like to have something a little different in order to pay for it and I don’t see that happening with Sutter.

Marcel Goc could be retained for the third line, maybe re-sign Joe Vitale, and use Zach Sill on the 4th line. This would open up the chance to move Sutter’s expected $2.5-3.5 million cap hit for a winger to play on the second line and possibly a mid round draft pick.

Not sure Lee Stempniak is anything more than a stop gap because of the injuries to Beau Bennett.

No idea why the team isn’t giving Jayson Megna more of an oppurtunity.

    Contract Status for ’14-15

Signed: Crosby, Kunitz, Dupuis, Malkin, Neal, Bennett, Adams
RFA: Sutter, Gibbons, Megna, Machacek, Zolnierczyk, Sill, Farnham

  330. theplanisworking says:

    Watching the Philthys-Craps game.

Philthy is not the joke they were at the beginning of the season.
I hate to even suggest this, but the Emery goonfest might have sparked that team.

They will not be an easy out in the playoffs.

  331. theplanisworking says:

  332. Brandie says:

    Thank you for the breakdown.

  333. Eric Bowser says:

Steve Mason is having a good season for the Flyers with a .915 save percentage. I guess it won’t hurt to give Craig Berube some credit for the turnaround.

  334. theplanisworking says:

    Mason yes.
    Berube? Meh.

They seem to be a team that could cause 1st round problems.

  335. Eric Bowser says:

Lee Stempniak is NHL leader with 5 points on the penalty kill with 2 goals and 3 assists.

    Pens scoring while short-handed – 3 goals

    Sutter 2 G and Maatta 1 – all 3 were unassisted.

  336. Eric Bowser says:

They have the talent to cause problems for anyone but I’m not convinced their blue line is that good in a seven game series.

  337. theplanisworking says:

But, as you know in hockey playoffs, a hot goalie hides a multitude of sins.

  338. Eric Bowser says:

    9 goals scored with 6 minutes left…… Flyers 5 Caps 4

  339. theplanisworking says:

To show how “experts” opinions can vary all over the place……..

Scott Burnside listed the Pens, and Rangers as winners on trade day. Although I like what the Pens did, I don’t see them as a clear winner. And the Rangers?

Conversely, he listed th Bruins and Kings as losers today. Kinds were very active, and the Bruins got who they wanted.

I prefer our own Eric B’s anaylsis. :)
