  1. Lad9 says:

Good luck to our resident Hippo as I believe that this is the day that the Plan moves to Irwin.

Checking in today from Chartiers Valley HS where the New Castle Hurricanes take on the Bethel Park Blackhawks. The early line has the Canes favored by 24 and the over/under on You Tube dunks is one. Let’s go Hawks and see if we can pull the upset!

  2. JRay3 says:

Well today marks the regular season finale for Pitt in their first year of ACC play. In what has been an uneven season, this squad still has a shot to finish 5th in the league with an 11-7 league mark, a spot better than predicted at ACC media days when they were pegged for 6th.

Undoubtedly the bigger issue is the need for the win today to help shore up a NCAA berth. Most experts still have the Panthers in at around a #10 seed. Another road win would be huge, as finishing ACC play with a 7-2 road record could not be ignored.

Great column by Kevin Gorman today in the Trib about how Pitt and their fans should be happy with Dixon. Could not agree more. Winning 75% of your games, 9 Tournament bids in 10 seasons, 1 Elite Eight, 2 Sweet Sixteens, and losing to five teams that went on to play in the Final Four, think that speaks very loudly. The fact it is being done at a school that is not a basketball factory or has the brand of a Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, or UCLA makes the accomplishments all the more impressive.

    Let’s GO PITT!

  5. Brandie says:

This is why they play the games. Let us see who has the mojo working today.

  6. Lad9 says:

BP down by 1 after Q1.

  7. Jim S. says:

I don’t know if Jamie has any smoke and mirrors left with this team, but I hope so. I think there is no question that, at an absolute minimum, they need to win today or a game in the ACC Tourney. 2 more losses to end the season, and there is no way the committee rewards this team with a bid.

I hope more shooting is on the way next year.

    Go Pitt!

  8. Lad9 says:

Well said JRay. And he has done it cleanly and with class. And hopefully Jim those shooters will show up next year. I think he has a few on the hook.

New Castle leads 32-25 at the break in a great half of basketball for both teams, but a miserable display by the zebras.

  9. JohninOshkosh says:

Tremendous post by JRay. Gorman’s piece was excellent as well.

At my alma mater, Bo Ryan is regarded by most as the best coach in the school’s basketball history. Most are dreading his retirement in a few years, quite frankly. Ryan has won 73% of his games. Three Sweet 16’s, one Elite Eight and no Final Four appearances since he began at Madison in 2001. Wisconsin is similarly not a school with a rich basketball history. Their 2000 Final Four appearance was the first since 1941.

Don’t quite understand why Pitt fans want him gone. Pittsburgh had a bowl team in football and a NCAA appearance last season in basketball. Take a look around the country-there are a lot of big name schools in big time conferences that can not say the same. The athletic program is solid and Dixon is a key reason for that.

Final Fours and Elite Eights are rarities for most programs. Generational occurrences, really. My family all attended Iowa. They haven’t been to a Final Four in 34 years. Wisconsin has been to two final fours in 73 years. Neither school is remarkable for that either. Deep runs in the NCAA’s are the exception and not the rule for the vast majority of programs. Dixon gets his teams most years in a position to at least make a run. Sometimes, they advance. Sometimes, they don’t. But many schools across the country can’t even say that.

  10. JRay3 says:

    +++, very nice post!

  11. Barb says:

I think living here in Pittsburgh with all the success our sports teams/programs have had make us a very spoiled fan base. Reading your post John puts Pitt’s success in perspective in regard to others.

  12. JohninOshkosh says:

I feel like I’m watching a game through a chain linked fence at the playground! Fairly physical and a lot of running early on in this one.

  13. JRay3 says:

Have to like Pitt’s defensive intensity to start, as they have created four turnovers in the first three minutes. Young starting to develop his outside shot of late. Would like to see Pitt keep attacking the rim on this Clemson team.

  14. JohninOshkosh says:

Can’t recall seeing a team miss so many gimmees as this Pitt club. So many high percentage shots just not falling this year.

  15. JohninOshkosh says:

    Pittsburgh 11
    Clemson 9

    First media timeout.

  16. JD says:

Excellent words of wisdom OshKosh! Many of the people who are ready to run Dixon out of town are the same ones who can’t wait to get rid of our Stanley Cup and Super Bowl winning coaches too. Many prefer complaining all the time and preparing to be underwhelmed. Just enjoy what we have and thank God we weren’t born Cleveland fans.

  17. JRay3 says:

Six different scorers for Pitt in first nine minutes, Panthers shooting 54% from field as they build early four point lead.

  18. Florida Steeler says:

Can Zanna and Wright please make a layup?? This has been all year.

  19. JRay3 says:

Clemson has hit four of six from behind the arc and are shooting 75%, that stat can not possibly keep up as they are not that good an offensive team.

Pitt getting looks on their offensive series, so chances will be there, getting out rebounded 8 to 5 that number has to change in final seven minutes of this opening half.

  20. JohninOshkosh says:

Nice stop by the Panthers and they draw the foul on the board. Need to chip away at the lead a bit.

  21. JohninOshkosh says:

    Sorry, wasn’t a reply.

  22. Florida Steeler says:

Problem is–they have been WIDE OPEN looks!!!!

  23. JohninOshkosh says:

Have to weather Clemson’s run. Tigers were on a 16-4 run at one point. Pitt has cut it to 5 and needs to pull closer before intermission.

    3:12 remaining first half:

    Clemson 32
    Pitt 25

  24. JRay3 says:

Dixon has every right to be upset, Patterson got mugged, no call leads to easy Clemson two, and forces Pitt into another timeout to regroup.

If Pitt is to have any chance, they have to play better on the defensive end of the court, team only plays well on that end in spurts.

  25. JohninOshkosh says:

Time for Patterson to step up. Team needs his senior leadership in the second half. He is capable of playing sensationally. Let’s see that in the second half, Lamar!

  26. Florida Steeler says:

Pitt is getting outworked and out hustled–Jamie needs to get these guys going.

  27. JohninOshkosh says:

    Clemson 38
    Pitt 29

Clemson shot 58% in first half. Pitt needs some good stops in the second half and Patterson and Zanna need to take charge. I thought Pitt was a bit lazy on blocking out on some of the boards and with some of their passing. Need to be more aggressive and hunker down defensively in the second frame.

  28. JohninOshkosh says:

Wichita State will play tomorrow for the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship. If the Shockers win, they will finish the regular season at 32-0. They, of course, ousted the Panthers last March from the NCAA’s on their way to the Final Four.

Wichita State also a strong baseball school.

    Remarkable season.

  29. JohninOshkosh says:

Gotta run for a family thing. Will watch the rest of this on DVR. Not too many chiming in on the blog here but, for those who are, or are lurking, bring home a Pitt win. They need it!

  30. JRay3 says:

Patterson with the dunk and the and one. 10-1 Pitt run has the Panthers right back in this one down just a point. Great effort being given this half.

  31. JRay3 says:

It is the Lamar Patterson show, as he goes three bomb, layup and now has 20 and Pitt ties it at 56.

  32. Jim S. says:

I think it is that Pittsburgh is not a college town. It is a successful pro town. The fans have seen the Penguins win 3 cups in the past 2 decades + a few years, and the Steelers lead everyone in Super Bowl victories. Look at how the Pirates rose up, won 94 games for the first winning season in 20 years and a decent % of people are ready to throw in the towel this year before it starts.

Once Pitt started winning, it became expected every season.

  33. Bizrow says:

Crap, well at least we will go into the post season with low expectations

  34. Jim S. says:

I’m a huge Pitt fan. But, it is probably better that they lose in the first round of the ACC Tourney and don’t get in at this point, IMO. There is a bad mojo right now with this team. I can’t imagine a team going to the NCAA Tournament on such a down note, if they somehow got in.

If they lose today, I think it takes a run in the ACC Tourney to have any chance.

  35. JRay3 says:

Are you serious? Are you kidding me? I am at a loss of words.

  36. JRay3 says:

Come on why so long, basket is good.

  37. Bizrow says:

Good, I just put the kibosh on this one

    Lets go Pitt

  38. Barb says:

They had to be 200% sure.

  39. JRay3 says:

Josh Newkirk with maybe the basket that salvages this Pitt season in some small way. Wow no quit this team plays until the end.

If Pitt wins this it will be forever dubbed the “Mircale at Little Jon”.

  40. JRay3 says:

Patterson a three to start OT, why not? Wright the finish at the bucket, Pitt up five in OT!

  41. JRay3 says:

CAM WRIGHT as shot clock winds down and Pitt up 7!

  42. JRay3 says:

A game like this maybe can turn the momentum back in a teams favor. If anything this game proves undeniably this team has not quit on its coach and that this team has not quit on this season.

  43. Bizrow says:

  44. Brandie says:

They have also not quit on each other and that’s being professional….something the gazillionaires should learn a lesson from.

  45. JRay3 says:

If Pitt has shown us one thing this season it is get the game into overtime and it is in the bag. Overtime kings, these Panthers.

  46. JRay3 says:

Pitt has three players in double digit scoring today – Patterson 30, Wright 14, and Zanna 10 who adds 10 boards to his stat line. Just the guys Pitt needed.

  47. Bizrow says:

A 7 point lead with 20 some seconds left and you foul, IMO let em score

  48. Bizrow says:

    Great win by the Panthers

  49. Barb says:

Wow just wow. My heart can’t take these types of games any more.

  50. Brandie says:

Still plenty of fight left in them. That is so good to see.

  51. JRay3 says:

Congrats to Coach Dixon and these Pitt kids. What a win! Pitt closes out the regular season at 23-8, 11-7 in the ACC and an unreal 7-2 on the road in conference play. Pitt also clinches the #5 seed in the ACC!

I think it also takes a lot of the nervousness out of the equation next Sunday for selection Sunday with this win.

Up next Pitt will play the winner of Notre Dame and Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 Eastern Time.

  52. Brandie says:

Come on Bodacious! Take a stiff drink and continue to support these cardiac kids! :) These types of wins have been the foundation of Pitt’s season. It also goes to show that this team can adjust even when the chips are down.

  53. Kevnj says:

Couldn’t get the game here in the garden state. Thanks all for the updates. Sounds like I missed a great finish

  54. Arriba Wilver says:

Patterson sure put in a second half to remember for his final regular season game. And Wright, after a mostly lackluster day, really poured it on in the end. Including, I think, sinking his last 4 foul shots.

    Really unbelievable finish.

  55. Stuart says:

Man, I thought that one was lost. I thought there were a lot of bad calls in the game. Most of these favored Clemson. Cam Wright and Josh played wellat the end. Robinson doesn’t want the ball later in the second half. Opponents know he won’t shoot, so it’s easier to double someone else.

Going into the tourney on a good note. Hail to Pitt!

  56. Let us now hope that Pitt can pull off a miraculous second half on Thursday afternoon like they did versus Clemson today so the Panthers can advance farther in the ACC Tournament, and then, it can be a more worthwhile season indeed.

  57. JohninOshkosh says:

I just finished watching the second half on DVR. What a terrific game. Reason #123,472,778 I love college basketball.

Lamar Patterson was fantastic in the second half. Played like a senior should. Clemson was fired up, the crowd was fired up. Clemson, like Pitt, needed the victory badly. But, Pitt had tremendous stops in the second half and whittled away. They hit crucial free throws down the stretch. Played behind most of the game, which is never easy.

Always have to remember college basketball is played by kids 18-23 years old. You see kids tightening up and kids rising to the occasion. Every. Single. Game. Makes for a wonderful sport to follow.

Watching Duke/Carolina. Getting excited about the ACC tournament. And, I’m a Big Ten man!

  58. Lad 9 says:

Hey John. Good evening. I am going to watch the Pitt game after NC – Duke. I had a fantasy baseball draft after my son’s game so I only caught a little of it. Can’t wait to see it.

I too am looking forward to the post season. Great time of year!

  59. JohninOshkosh says:

Hope you had a good draft. Haven’t played in a baseball fantasy league in years.

Remember when it was called “Rotisserie Baseball” ?

Pitt’s fantastic road record bodes well for the tourney, I think.

  60. Lad 9 says:

I had been in fantasy football for years, but have only done baseball for the last three years and I love it.

And I agree with you on the road record for Pitt. With this team, it’s all about the matchup too. They don’t have the athleticism that some of these teams do.

  61. JohninOshkosh says:

Duke’s Rodney Hood and Jabari Parker are about as good a tandem as it gets in college basketball.

Really fun to watch. (Silent prayer that Parker ends up in Milwaukee :) )

  62. Lad 9 says:

I saw them in person and they were both stunningly good. Lottery picks. Hope your Bucks get young Mr. Parker

  63. Jim S. says:

What a comeback by Pitt. The game was not on where I live, so I was just following tweets and the ESPN app. The ESPN app, btw, had it at a 67-65 loss for about 10 minutes. OT was probably half over before they corrected it. I’m thinking that never happens to them in an important game – like a Miami Heat game, for instance.

  64. JD says:

Rotisserie baseball was great! I heard that the ordinal founders sprayed the winner with Yoo-Hoo. I love Yoo-Hoo.

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

    ++++ Chicken and Yoo-Hoo !
