Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Back to work

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Don’t ever take a 10-day break. Not even after going 21 days in a row on the other side of the planet. A week, yeah. But 10 days is too much. Just kind of drags out. You start staring at ceilings and randomly falling asleep in strange places. All I wanted to do the past 3-4 days was to get back to events and writing and annoying everyone and all that.

Anyway, let the annoying resume: I’ll have a Monday column on Ben Roethlisberger, I’ll head down to Florida first thing Wednesday to cover the Pirates for a week’s worth of columns, and all the other stuff will return as scheduled.

That includes this tonight …

The joint venture between WPXI-TV and Trib Total Media continues tonight at 11:35 p.m. — right after the Channel 11 News — with the latest episode of The Subway Final Word.

>> Who’s on the panel: I’ll be joined by Chris Adamski, who covers Penn State and the Penguins for the Trib, and Mark Madden, top-rated radio host of 105.9 the X. The host will be WPXI-TV’s Bill Philllips.

>> What we’re talking about: The Penguins at the trade deadline, the Steelers’ plan for Jason Worilds and more.

>> How to participate: Each week, we also take comments from viewers through 20-second videos you submit on The Final Word’s Facebook page, as well as comments to The Final World’s Twitter account

>> Where to watch: In addition to the broadcast on WPXI-TV, we have WPXI’s live online stream for Pittsburgh’s many out-of-town sports fans, as well as video podcasts available on both outlets’ Web sites.

Here’s last week’s full episode.

Thanks to those of you who took care of the comments section and made them exactly what they are in terms of quality, thoughtful discussion. Trust me when I say that never goes unappreciated.

  1. Ghost says:

    He’s baaaaack
He’s back in the saddle again
    Welcome baaaaack
Welcome back in the saddle again

  2. kr70 says:

Looking forward to your trip south, Travis has done a nice job but can’t get enough Buccos!

  3. Brandie says:

Keeps turning up like a bad penny. Welcome back Dejan.

  4. Brandie says:

Rashard Mendenhall to retire at age 26 according to ESPN.

  5. Brandie says:

One fight between Vancouver and Calgary last night. Actual hockey was played. I ask you…how come decent people can’t find work and ooze spewing troglodytes like John Tortorella keep falling into jobs?

  6. DJ says:

Interesting. Never thought he was passionate about playing professional football. Always seemed like a sideline to him.

  7. Milo Hamilton says:

I was unable to see the Pitt game yesterday but was able to follow it on the phone. Lamar Patterson has had a great senior season and has completely changed my opinion of him. He was 100% right yesterday when he said the basketball gods owed them one. Sounds like they really celebrated in the locker room after the game & good for them. I hope the coach enjoyed it too. It doesn’t seem from an outsiders perspective that he’s been having too much fun at his job lately.

  8. Milo Hamilton says:

Wait a minute, the blog isn’t being held hostage by daylight savings time ? That’s frankly a little disappointing. :)

  9. Brandie says:

I guess this proves it…or maybe there is something the matter with him he was not healing from. Guess we will never know.

  10. Brandie says:

    Nice Migh-loe.

  11. DJ says:

A little window into “Sid the competitor.”

Not sure if others observed the same thing but right before the start of the shootout in Anaheim, both Getzlaf and Perry were standing on the ice near the end of the Pens bench where Sid was sitting. It looked like they were trying to engage Sid in a little banter, maybe trying to get in his head a little bit before the shootout. Sid had a slight smile on his face, looked like he might be listening to a couple things, but did not appear to say anything. Even though teammates on Canada’s Olympic squad, Sid clearly his game face on and was not about to be drawn away from the task at hand.

What happened next is this: Gotta love his skills but particularly his focus.

  12. Sarah says:

Torts will be collecting unemployment soon enough don’t you worry.

  13. Sarah says:

Funny even after all that deking, he still went 5hole lol!
And snagged Hillers stick w his skate so he couldn’t cover it…..

  14. Arriba Wilver says:

  15. Kuni n sid were both trying to keep straight faces. Getzlaf and perry seem like a jolly bunch.

  16. Mi-lough, dont forget to do some neck stretching exercises before hitting the beach. :)

  17. Sign of things to come?:

“I don’t think keeping anything together after the first 25 or 30 minutes was in order,” Bylsma said.

    Disco shuffle?

  18. All play and no work makes DK a dull boy.

Now for the “rigors” of Bradenton. Hope he has more than a dorm room down there. And more food variety than broccoli and sausage. Probably some carp available. And I hope he takes Dali with him.

  19. DJ says:

    Hiller’s reaction is priceless.

Dips his head looking straight through his legs thinking he might have inadvertently stopped it, realizes it’s in the net and then looks to the rafters thinking “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

  20. Thundercrack says:

‘terms of quality, thoughtful discussion. ‘

    On this blog? :-)
    I kid.

    Welcome back

  21. JRay3 says:

Best part of watching that thriller, was seeing how Jamie Dixon coached until the very end, used his TO’s wisely to draw up a defense and believed in his kids all 40 minutes. He pours his all into these games.

In return Pitt’s players played for Dixon all 40 minutes and than took over in OT. Your assessment of Patterson is spot on and yesterday he proved his leadership and value to the 2014 team.

Add in contributions from Wright and Zanna, and Pitt got production from their experienced guys and gave a great lesson to the freshman.

  22. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m enjoying the rigors of Bradenton right now. Today will be beach, tomorrow Buccos.

  23. Enjoy. We’ll be looking forward to the reports.

  24. Now if they can get the correct time on the Bucco Blog, they’ll be OK.

  25. Skip says:

A shirtless Milo at the beach – is that legal there?

  26. Milo Hamilton says:

Reports you shall have. I’ll see them tomorrow, Thursday & Friday. I’m fitting in Tigers/Yankees on Wednesday. I’ll give a full report on the Tigers bullpen.

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

There’s an ordinance for everything down here. I’m sure there’s one for that too.

  28. JRay3 says:

Sounds like a great time, enjoy the sun and baseball! I will take a Gregory Polanco autograph if you are excepting requests:)

  29. Yogi Berra’s wife Carmen just died at 85. May she rest in peace. Their son Dale was a Pirates shortstop during the 80s.

  30. Barb says:

My-low make sure you have your sunscreen and a nice cool beverage. :)

  31. bpn8pitt says:

$5 Sproles is either a Bronco or Patriot. Any takers?

  32. Barb says:

So glad you’re back DK you’ve been missed.

  33. Brandie says:

    Enthusiastically seconded.

  34. Brandie says:

Thoughts and prayers for Mr. Berra and his family during this sad time.

  35. JohninOshkosh says:

Aaron Craft finally playing in his Senior Day game at Columbus.

I believe it also marks his 1000 collegiate game!

  36. Andrew says:

    Student Athlete Emeritus

  37. JohninOshkosh says:

34 up and 34 down for the Wichita State Shockers. Incredible achievement.

Will be interesting to see if the Committee gives a MVC team the number one seed overall.

Big difference in pressure being the hunted instead of doing the hunting. Gonzaga had the overall one seed, and that did not work out too well.

  38. JohninOshkosh says:

Sorry, I misspoke. The Zags had a one seed last year, but Louisville was one overall. If I recall, WSU was the school that dispatched Gonzaga from the West region.
