  1. Sarah says:

    Woot! First!

  2. aaron says:

What’s up Sarah? Ready for another game?

  3. Sarah says:

Sadly, I’m in flight off to San Fran for a job interview…..but I am online so I hope you Peeps can keep me informed here!

Most interested in the lines tonight!…..wonder if Stemp gets an extended look w Sid….wonder if Goc will stay on 4th line….is Vitale scratched….and whatnot….

Zatkoff w the start it seems. Yikes. OV will give him a welcome I’m sure…..

  4. Eric Bowser says:

Crosby has 2 goals in the last 12 games.

Pens are 5th in NHL team goals per game with 3.11

Pens are 8th in NHL team goals against per game with 2.46

Pens are 1st in NHL Power Play Success at 25.5%

Pens are 1st in NHL Penalty Kill Success at 87.2%

Pens are 14th in NHL Shots per game with 30.2

Pens are 8th in NHL Shots against per game with 28.4

Pens are 8th in NHL Missed Shots per game with 10.85

  5. Sarah says:

    Turnovers v takeaways?……

  6. tpbco says:

I’m interested as well. One tidbit picked up after the Ducks match, which I also noticed, was the play of Pyatt on the second line in the 3rd period. Man, if that could work…then JJ goes to 3rd line with Goc and then Stempy or Bennett (at some point) on the 1st line and then there are a few options for the 4th.

Not optimum, but a little more competitive from top to bottom.

  7. Eric Bowser says:

18th in giveaways with 7.53 per game
29th in takeaways with 4.78 per game (not good at all)

  8. aaron says:

    Best wishes on the interview!

  9. aaron says:

Pregame show said Disco Danny plans on “a lot of experimenting” with lines over the next 12-13 games.

  10. Eric Bowser says:

Expected lineup according to Pens twitter

    1st: Kunitz-Crosby-Stempniak
    2nd: Pyatt-Malkin-Neal
    3rd: Jokinen-Sutter-Vitale
    4th: Glass-Goc-Adams

    DP1: Orpik – Maatta
    DP2: Scuderi – Niskanen
    DP3: Despres – Engelland

    Starter: Zatkoff
    Backup: Fleury

  11. Sarah says:

    Thanks O Stat Meister!

Yah that is fairly damning ….and in such a weak division….as a G those nbrs drive me crazy because scoring opps happen the wrong way so often on giveaways….

  12. Eric Bowser says:

I agree with that approach. Come playoff time, you should know the buttons to push and what does or does not work.

  13. aaron says:

Absolutely. Now is the time to get it figured out.

  14. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, puck possession is huge… if you are taking too many penalties, giving the puck away, having to block too many shots, too many hits… that’s a sign your team doesn’t have the puck.

That’s why I have to laugh when people praise the blocked shots and hit totals for players/teams.

  15. Sarah says:

    JJ n Sutter yay!!!

    Goc on 4th line boo….

And Pyatt gets another look mucking and retrieving for Geno….interesting!

  16. Sarah says:

Exactly….madden was saying how Vitale doesn’t have Adams ‘ grit or some such, look at all the blocked shots Adams has….or Glass… That only means you’re too slow to get posession or losing battles, so blocking a shot is your only option…..

At least Vitale is in the lineup.

  17. Sarah says:

    Possibly we’re trying the ’4 C’ model…..

  18. Eric Bowser says:

A ton of options, flexibility for the coach. What else could you want?

    1st line
    Kunitz-Crosby-Gibbons
    Kunitz-Crosby-Stempniak

    2nd line
    Jokinen-Malkin-Neal
    Pyatt-Malkin-Neal
    Bennett-Malkin-Neal

    3rd line
    Pyatt-Sutter-Vitale
    Pyatt-Sutter-Bennett
    Pyatt-Sutter-Stempniak
    Jokinen-Sutter-Vitale
    Goc-Sutter-Bennett
    Goc-Sutter-Vitale
    Goc-Sutter-Stempniak
    Jokinen-Sutter-Goc

    4th line
    Glass-Goc-Adams
    Glass-Vitale-Adams

  19. aaron says:

Sutter v Kesler. With Kesler at 29 years old and Sutter 25…the pens must feel Sutter’s ceiling is lower than Kesler on the downside of his career.

Especially with sheros comment about “hopefully” Sutter is an improving player.

  20. Sarah says:

Thanks Aaron……it’s a long way to go for a job I’m not sure I want…..

  21. Sarah says:

Yep. They’re not sold on Sutter and Kessler has a bigger upside…..if he’s OK w playing on 3L….

  22. aaron says:

I wonder if Jordan Staal ever regrets the pride factor that led him to turn down the 10-year 57 million dollar deal.

  23. Eric Bowser says:

    1-0 Pens

Kunitz down LW and backhand top shelf…. woooo!

Mike Green’s jock is on the ice…

  24. aaron says:

    Stemp gets first point.

  25. Sarah says:

Cripes did we score already..???? Trying to stream CSN on this damn wifi….Kuni???

  26. Sarah says:

    Hah! Where it belongs….

  27. Andrew says:

You can extend the same logic to giveaways and takeaways, a player or team who possess the puck better will have more giveaways because they will have more opportunities to give it away. If you do not have the puck much of time you will have more opportunities for takeaways.

Additionally, the NHL’s realtime stats are rife with scored bias and next to worthless.

  28. aaron says:

For as big as Pyatt is, he doesn’t use his body very well.

  29. aaron says:

    Crosby!!!!! Laser shot!!!!

  30. Brandie says:

Good to see Stempy with first point. Go Crosby sweater.

  31. Eric Bowser says:

Missed the last two goals… intense game of “Go Fish” with my son. I won.

Life lesson, losing toughens you up. lol

  32. Sarah says:

    3 scires already wth??

  33. Brandie says:

Mojo is working Sarahpova. Contests on interview BTW.

  34. Eric Bowser says:

Like I said, Crosby with 2 goals in last 12 games… and voila… PP goal.

  35. Wild Bill says:

Greetings puck nuts! And you too, Pucknutz.

Anybody wanna play a little D tonight?

  36. Brandie says:

If the Pens can keep up the pace, I am all for D with a smattering of O, oh Untamed William.

  37. Eric Bowser says:

Holy brutal mental mistake by Orpik as he moved puck to corner nowhere near Maatta and had to race to puck to beat the Capitals forward to the puck. Wow that was bad.

  38. Sarah says:

    Um….contests?…..

  39. Sarah says:

Don’t get me started. Scuds has been awful too esp since his ankle.

  40. Pucknutz says:

Thank You Bill …. just got here …see the Pens up 2-1 … gotta get caught up.

  41. Wild Bill says:

Brooksie decided to express himself after the penalty.

  42. Eric Bowser says:

Oh man, Maatta almost connected on that backdoor push shot.

  43. Pucknutz says:

    The great 8 a minus 25! I don’t always think +/- is a great stat …. but -25 ?

  44. Wild Bill says:

Very overrated player. Does two things well: snipe from the weak side without working for the puck, and hit people who aren’t looking. Don’t like him at all, and wouldn’t want him on the Pens, ever.

  45. Jandy says:

    well said, Wild One!

  46. Jandy says:

    $64M question….lol

  47. Jandy says:

Hey Sarahpova, good luck with that interview!

  48. Ok sarah, heres the scoop. Pyatt has looked ok on 2nd line but he also was late on backcheck allowing for GA. Other than that, i’ve seen Goc with sutter and at C with 4th line. Orpik made a bad play but got out of the box and damn near killed someone. I believe the goal scorer. Good luck on interview!

  49. Pucknutz says:

As the Garage league Saint notes…well said Bill!
    My sentiments exactly.

  50. Eric Bowser says:

I would agree to some extend the real-time stats are hogwash but when I watch the games and then look at the stats… I’m usually wondering why there aren’t more stats credited for those categories.

Every team has their own definition as well, which is why we hear Bylsma talk about it sometimes.

Imagine how much fun it is to track the game in live action, then go back and do it frame by frame with the coaches tape to get all the action.

I know scouts look for it but watch how many times a player angles a puck-carrier correctly and force a pass/giveaway. Then watch how often a player’s stick is on the ice in all situations.

Those are things, you need to watch with your eyes or coaches tape.

When I had the opportunity years ago to talk scouting with Chuck Grillo, he said anyone can read the stat sheet, his job was to watch the player on the ice, get to know the player off it as best he could, talk with his coaches, teammates.

Scouts don’t want cheaters… you can almost be assured, that mantra is why the Penguins have avoided certain player types.

  51. Damn i meant, sarahpova not sarah. Boo me.

  52. Zen muppet! I like it.

  53. Sarah says:

    Thanks Peeps!!!

  54. Jandy says:

    :thwap:

  55. Wild Bill says:

Not sold on Pyatt, Hm. Softest big hockey player I can think of.

  56. I hear ya…i use cerebral in place of sofff sometimes :)

  57. Andrew says:

No arguments there and certainly teams have their own internal metrics, and likely the same person recording them. The idea of a giveaway, takeaway is good, it just the one publically available are awful. I love how the spread is so much greater in every home category and how the Leafs have 38.8 hits/G at home and 25.8/game on the road.

  58. Eric Bowser says:

Goc is working the boards, going to the net, and skating hard to the right areas of the ice. He needs to be on the top three lines.

  59. Wild Bill says:

Being severely out worked this period. Z must be tough.

  60. Brandie says:

    That way I won’t scare Dom. :)

  61. Brandie says:

Ms. J or Jandyskya! How about Stempy?

  62. Wild Bill says:

Pretty good kill on the Crosby penalty.

  63. Jandy says:

Hi Brandiskiva! I am liking Stempy~

  64. Brandie says:

    Congratulations! Damnable tablet!

  65. Wild Bill says:

Go Sarah. Flash the glove hand and poke check any wise guys.

  66. Wild Bill says:

And a dumb penalty by Vitale makes us kill another one.

  67. Eric Bowser says:

    I hate offensive zone penalties…

  68. Andrew says:

    The is a bad penalty.

  69. aaron says:

Which means he will be buried on the fourth line forever.

  70. Jandy says:

Poop! We have to quit taking stupid penalties

  71. Pucknutz says:

Adams gettin in front of an Ovie shot!…..I thought the guy was Ivy league…

  72. aaron says:

Thanks Joe….terrible penalty. Scuds just let’s the guy stand in front of the net….orpik is doing goodness knows what.

  73. Eric Bowser says:

And there’s Scuderi swimming on the ice…..

  74. Brandie says:

    FIRE VITALE! HE’S A BUM!

  75. aaron says:

We need a clever name for the Orpik – Scuderi pairing…… Anyone want to lead us off?

  76. Brandie says:

You might want to vet the size 9 Wides ready.

  77. Wild Bill says:

One shot in the period so far won’t cut it. Compete level must rise!

  78. aaron says:

14-1 against in the shots department this period so far……yikes!

  79. Jandy says:

That Brouwer is a rotten so and so!

  80. Jandy says:

    Might have to! >:<

  81. Wild Bill says:

7:31 left in the period and one – one – shot.

  82. Brandie says:

How about Oh No!-Dang It! for a nickname? Everytime I see them together, that’s what cones to mind. Take your pick as to which is which!

  83. Sarah says:

    Peeps what are the shots?

  84. Jandy says:

    Nice!

  85. Wild Bill says:

Halak gets an assist on the goal by Kunitz!

  86. Andrew says:

Keep riding that shooting percentage, which is a dangerous game.

  87. Eric Bowser says:

Sid to Stempniak, shoots…. Kunitz drives net and there’s the biscuit into the basket.

    3-2 Pens.

  88. Sarah says:

Total for the game I mean…this periods a dumpster fire…..

  89. aaron says:

    Perhaps “O-no and Duds”

  90. Wild Bill says:

    24 to 11 Caps, Sarah.

  91. Brandie says:

I am really beginning to like this Stempy guy. We need to see more of this.

  92. Brandie says:

    Either that or “AW CRAP”!

  93. Eric Bowser says:

This could be way way too premature but the things I’m seeing Stempniak doing on the ice with Crosby and Kunitz are the things that Guerin did with them. The board work, shooting from high slot, going to the net….

  94. Wild Bill says:

    Still 24 to 11.

  95. Wild Bill says:

    It does look promising, Eric.

  96. Brandie says:

Million Dollar Talent…10 Cent Head. I do not think you will ever have to worry about the Pens being that desperate to invest in that train wreck.

  97. Wild Bill says:

Orpik with a great hit on Ovie!

  98. aaron says:

    Gotta love that one!

  99. aaron says:

For all his faults, Orpik can still lay the wood.

  100. Brandie says:

Do you think we will be placing Stempniak in the Grit Hall of Fame, with the likes of Guerin and Gary Roberts?

Imagine the bracelets…WWSD…What Would Stempy Do?

  101. Brandie says:

Makes me long for the days he was more of a complete player.

  102. Wild Bill says:

Boy are we fortunate. 13 shots and still lead 3 – 2.

  103. Eric Bowser says:

Oh, I don’t think Stempy will be that guy dropping the gloves but honestly, I hope he just sticks to hockey. If he plays the straight ahead game, dart in and out of the traffic areas, it’ll work. Tonight is a good example of what someone like him could do on a line with Crosby.

  104. Jandy says:

    I’m liking it!

  105. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, not their best game from a puck possession standpoint as Caps have tremendous speed at forward and that’s caused some problems.

  106. Andrew says:

It is 16-10 5v5 in favor of the Capitals, which is better than the total but still bad.

  107. Sarah says:

How many games outshot in a row now.? Three?

  108. aaron says:

At least we have addressed our team issues when facing fast, aggressive teams…..wait…..

  109. Andrew says:

    Actually 18-11 5v5

  110. Sarahkova, i know brooksie and piece are taking the brunt but all in all the 2 GA might have been stopped by flower in the cage. Pyatt got beat on 1st GA but on 2nd GA we were on PP and piece was obviously told to take away cross ice pass to black hole…i mean ovie…and he left guy in front open for tip BUT i think you would agree that Z could’ve had it.

And i know we’re not getting a lot of shots, but for most part i like how we’re playing. No PM, no tanger, no flower, not bad.

  111. Eric Bowser says:

Not a good situation right now in Dallas as Rich Peverley has apparently collapsed on the bench. Play is stopped, players are kneeling and arena is silent as they await word on his condition.

  112. Eric Bowser says:

They’ve pulled the players off the ice… game is delayed and fear, this will be cancelled. I guess it wasn’t a good situation for Peverley.

  113. Jandy says:

As long as we have some shots on goal, I’m not so worried about quantity…it’s quality…

  114. Jandy says:

Oh My, not good at all… :(

  115. Wild Bill says:

Now saying he’s ok in the dressing room.

  116. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, he’s had history of heart problems.

  117. Sarah says:

TG….irregular heartbeat was the prior issue I read….

  118. Wild Bill says:

It’s time to put this one away.

  119. Pucknutz says:

Sid dumps it in and then controls forever ! What a guy!

  120. Andrew says:

What a time for a bad change.

  121. Eric Bowser says:

Come on Dan…. RUN YOUR BENCH.

2:17 to play is not the time to be getting a bench minor.

  122. J Walter Weatherman says:

Solid effort to get a too many men on the ice penalty with 2 minutes remaining.

  123. aaron says:

Wow…..horrendous penalty. We just can’t stand prosperity.

  124. Geno’s demeanor has been crap last few games. Then he doesn’t get it deep and doesn’t get off the ice in time…

  125. Wild Bill says:

Malkin didn’t get it deep, and it led to the call.

  126. aaron says:

Perfect time for a Genover …. He has the mental makeup of a spoiled teenager. He is still sulking about the Olympics.

  127. Oops they were on pp..we on pk

  128. Eric Bowser says:

    What action late by Caps….

  129. Wild Bill says:

Outstanding kill gives us the win.

  130. J Walter Weatherman says:

Really good PK. Zatkoff played well. Really, he played well against San Jose with exception of that bad goal in the 3rd.

  131. aaron says:

Despite their best efforts to toss the game, the pens won. It is good to see them win a game 3-2 when things aren’t going their way but they find a way to pull it out. Great game by Z in net!

  132. Jandy says:

The PK won this one for them….helped Zats protect the net,
Geno needs to sit a game or three.

  133. Jandy says:

    Agreed!

  134. aaron says:

Geno needs something that’s for sure!

  135. Wild Bill says:

I’m hoping that tomorrow, Consol crowd gives Geno some love to help him get out of this funk.

  136. aaron says:

His folks are about due for their annual visit, no?

  137. Wild Bill says:

    Seems like it’s time.

  138. aaron says:

Maybe some of mama’s cooking and some family time will help.

  139. Eric Bowser says:

Marcel Goc didn’t see the ice for the last 2:17 of the game. Strange….

  140. Wild Bill says:

    Hope so.

  141. aaron says:

I know Shero leaves the lines up to DD, but pehaps some helpful suggestions would be a good thing.

  142. Wild Bill says:

He hasn’t killed penalties with us enough to be there with a game on the line, Eric.

  143. Jandy says:

Good night Loonies…repeat of this tomorrow night…but in OUR house!

  144. Wild Bill says:

Not going to bed already, are you Jandy???

  145. aaron says:

    Perhaps a lineup of:

    Goc – Malkin – Neal
    Jokinen – Sutter – Pyatt
    Glass – Vitale – Adams

  146. aaron says:

    Goodnight!

  147. Wild Bill says:

Whatever confuses the opposition more than it confuses the Pens.

  148. Eric Bowser says:

These games are when you know what you have or don’t have in a player. I’ll be interested to see how this develops over the last month of the season.

  149. Wild Bill says:

Good blogging with Yinz! See you tomorrow.

  150. aaron says:

    Catch ya later!

  151. I was wondering bout that too but i think the other PK players got stuck on the ice for too long to get changes. There was a TO in there too i think.

  152. It’s good that the Pens won 3-2 in Washington tonight. Now, hopefully, they can beat the Capitols tomorrow night in Consol Center. And, hopefully, nothing will happen like what happened tonight when Dallas’ Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench and the rest of the Stars/Columbus Blue Jackets match was canceled since the players were too shocked to continue. At least Peverley, who’s been dealing with an irregular heartbeat and was hospitalized, is okay at last report.

  153. Dodkong says:

In response to the soft big hockey player: Alexei Ponikarovsky, at least while he was with the Pens.

In response to the Jordan Staal ego thing: The guy has already won a cup and is already a multimillionaire. So beyond success and money, what else would motivate him to play the game? How about the possibility of playing with two of his brothers at the highest level of competition? I don’t fault Staal in the least for heading to Carolina. I believe it was about family. And which is why I said that the Rangers had better be ready to wave goodbye to Marc next year when his contract is up.

  154. aaron says:

If you’re willing to dismiss the reports he was tired of playing third line behind Crosby and Malkin then sure ego had nothing to do with it. I’m sure playing with his brothers was a factor, but to completely dismiss the ego factor is a mistake. All of that being said, I believe a combination of things contributed to it.

If Marc goes to Carolina they could rename the squad the “Carolina Fighting Staal’s”
