  1. Rbilak says:

Hopefully today we see at least some effort. Questions remain.

    1. Anyone going to at least look at Rinaldo today? Or does he continue to run everyone in a Pens uniform without a second thought?

    2. Does Bortuzzo dress? I mean do we need to play someone who might actually challenge a Flyer, right Dan and Ray? Maybe we can get some 5 foot defenseman too.

    3. Powerplay going to give up a ton more short-handed chances again today?

    4. Still no Harry Z call up? Why?

    5. Will MAF be up to par today? Elite goaltenders can win you games when you are having a series of injuries.

    6. Will the Flyers continue to skate in around the net untouched?

    7. Will Sid or Geno play like 2 of the top players in the world ?

We will know early today, if Rinaldo escapes first period, color them done, every team knows plan to beat a Pens, force them into undisciplined penalties, exploit point men on powerplay, limited and frustrate Sid and Geno early, play physical.

  2. Sarah says:

    Kunitz still out.
    MAF with the start.

  3. Sarah says:

    1- doubtful
    2- possibly…I hope!!
    3- yes
    4- see Dan, Disco
5- yes, but will it matter?
6- yes, esp when vet D are on the ice
    7- against this team? No.

  4. hockeymonster says:

Engo needs to take care of Rinaldo at the 1st opportunity. Would like to see orpik catch Giroux with his head down but would settle for putting him through the boards.

  5. Jandy says:

or head first into the Flyers bench!

  6. hockeymonster says:

Easy for us to say…I’m wearing sweat pants :)

  7. hockeymonster says:

Eric, i think i figured out a way to factor in QoC as part of your equation!

  8. hockeymonster says:

Actually there a couple ways to do it. Also found a way to factor in TOI along with QoC.

  9. hockeymonster says:

What you think about do it this way?

    PPG+shots/game + shot blocks/game + shot attempts/game + plus/minus X QoC% = player value

You can still do the negative value as part of your rating. But i think the above formula gives a good snap shot cuz the player value is a direct result of positive actions as it relates to time and production. You can add a variable for FO% for centers but that would be moot for wingers. And you can add variables for PP and PK.

  10. Rbilak says:

2 minutes in what a response. Could get Ugly, as I think we are one MAF goal away from a meltdown.

  11. Jason81 says:

Sure, blame Fleury for Bortuzzo’s awful shift. You going to blame Fleury for not taking away Simmonds in front of the net too?

  12. Rbilak says:

And there it is 2-0, MAF looking like playoff MAF, scrambling all over. Dan looks lost on bench, no clue.

  13. Rbilak says:

Did not blame him, just saying his confidence is going to be tested2-0, I see nothing from this team, one of post could be 3-0.

  14. Rbilak says:

Geno with the undisciplined penalty. I have never posted Fire Dan but, when things never change it is time to rethink this before playoffs. I have zer faith he can get any of these guys to play smart hockey, he has zero adjustments.

  15. PurpleMoose says:

This team and coach are unbelievable. Can almost predict what they are going to do wrong year after year after year after year.

They come out trying to hit when they are a puck possession team, no Harry Z but we get to watch Megna and Gibbons, Malkin plays like a leader and takes a dumb penalty and Coach One Plan Dan with no answers.

  16. Jason81 says:

And if he hadn’t made a couple of other amazing saves to bail out his defense, it could already be 4-0.

  17. Sarah says:

    Not MAF Peeps.

  18. Sarah says:

    NOT. M.A.F.

  19. Sarah says:

Now Our Dan on NBC saying Get To Our Game!!!
    Yes, let’s!!!!

  20. hockeymonster says:

DJ, is Elvis putting on his coat yet?

  21. Sarah says:

    See point 7 above.

  22. hockeymonster says:

I think we’re seeing 1st hand what kind of players and on some level bargains Real deal and Kuni are.

  23. hockeymonster says:

    Bet he is now.

  24. Sarah says:

Wow another goal on 4 and 44.
Could we give Hartnell MORE room in front of the paint?
    Good lord. Beer league stuff.

  25. PurpleMoose says:

Hey Scuderi, you bum why don’t you just push Fleury out of the way and say there you go Mr Simmonds have a free shot because I sure as hell don’t want to get in your way.

  26. PurpleMoose says:

I know that it was going to be tough this weekend with the injuries but I didn’t read anywhere that both Malkin and Crosby were also not playing this weekend.

  27. Sarah says:

Y’know Peeps these are the times I wish MAF was NOT such a nice guy…..and would go absolutely nuclear APESH-T on this team in between periods.
    Just embarrassing.
    Home Ice too.

    Good Lord.

  28. Rbilak says:

Is there a Mercy Rule? Two games in a row they did not show up. My concern on MAF is confidence, no matter his play today, giving up 3 in first and being pulled is not what he needed, he should not have started back to back. What do they do now? I believe this coach has lost his team, they tune him out, it is obvious.

  29. Sarah says:

If the whole team is teetering on whether Kuni and Neal a re in the lineup, we should pack it in right now.
Yes we are not at optimal roster,
But there is NO excuse for THIS.

  30. PurpleMoose says:

Gibbons is on the ice more than his skates.

Somebody please remind me what Adams contributes anymore.

Sutter – please do something anything. With these injuries, players like you have to step up.

  31. Sarah says:

    Adams contribution is Negative.
But Disco has his Pets, so get used to it.

  32. Sarah says:

Yeah I was hoping for Zats today, cos I had no faith they would bounce back against this team. if it wasn’t PHL, then maybe. But not this team. Shoulda sat MAF.

  33. PurpleMoose says:

That’s correct Sarah. These are all still NHL players. With this lineup, you try to win the game 1-0 but coach One Plan Dan doesn’t know how to change a game plan based on circumstances (witness the outdoor game).

  34. Brandie says:

Glad I am not watching this fiasco then.

  35. PurpleMoose says:

Easy to say and Monday morning coaching but I thought Zats should have started yesterday. On the road with all of the injuries and the win not crucial. More crucial to rest Fleury and keep his confidence high. But that is just me analyzing the situation which we all know Coach One Plan Dan does not do.

  36. Sarah says:

Seriously B. You have NO idea how glad you are LOL!!

  37. Sarah says:

Dunno HM. Does the whole teAm depend on those 2?
I’m honestly not willing to make excuses anymore.
We’re supposed to be unstoppable cos of Sid n Geno.

But when Kuni and Lazy go down, the 8th seed owns us?

  38. Aaron says:

So….what you are all saying is that this team is playing playoff hockey… just so happens this is what Pittsburgh playoff hockey is now.

No defense…..MAF regresses to a 10 year old pee wee net minder and the best player in the world gets confused between winning and whining……Geno thinks he is a fourth line “tough guy”……Disco Dan solidifies his other moniker “Don’t change a thing Dan”…..and we lose to inferior clubs that actually “get it.”

Right. Nice to see the team is gearing up for another post season run!

If you will pardon me, I am now going to go vomit.

  39. Sarah says:

Aaron I do not agree this is on MAF.

    All your other points….no argument.

  40. Brandie says:

Don’t forget to brush when done.

Seriously I am not sure where to begin with the breakdowns this team is suffering. Teams get injured, but a team with depth, hunger, and discipline knows how to work through these issues.

  41. Brandie says:

Sarahpova you may have to suit up and go all Wonder Woman on ‘em!

  42. Sarah says:

Bottom line this goes back to many of us saying this team as currently configured and Coached, is not going far in the playoffs.
    Where’s our Plan BTW????

  43. Rbilak says:

Hunger, great point. I do think part of the problem is guys have become way too comfortable. The Steelers always said repeating much harder than winning one. Watching Scuderi today, he looks like he is skating in cement. He spoke about”Globetrotter” hockey, he is playing Bozo the Clown hockey today.

  44. hockeymonster says:

Come on sarah, even in our beer leagues if you don’t have your ringers its a tough game.

  45. Brandie says:

Do you mean Plan The Hippo or The Plan For Penguin Hockey Supremacy? You have to be specific with questions like that.

  46. Sarah says:

Sorry I don’t agree. We should not be owned by PHL. Without Kunitz and without Neal, we shouldn’t be owned.

Are you really OK with this ?

  47. Brandie says:

    Maybe Washington Generals Hockey.

  48. Aaron says:

I didint see the first period so I will take your word for it, but do any of us seriously have any faith and confidence in him come mid-April in playoff time?

I love the guy, I think he is a great locker room guy…..but something happened to him and he is shell shocked damaged goods in the playoffs.

  49. Sarah says:

And they aren’t ringers esp not Kuni.
    Come on.

  50. Sarah says:

  51. Aaron says:

Dingle Danny always talks about the Pens getting to their game, yet they adopt the mindset of whoever it is they are playing or at least try to.

The sad fact is this is a collection of pretty big speed skaters on offense and 5-11 puck movers and mid-thirties too slow to cut it anymore defensemen plus what seems to be the mist injury prone team in the league.

The injuries….. major issue….Duper was the one they can’t overcome, but that doesn’t change the fact this team is too soft in all regards.

    All glitz and no grit…..

  52. Aaron says:

pretty boy speed skaters…..I this tablet keyboard about as much as the flyers

  53. Sarah says:

Oh goodness, no I do not, and have been clear that I thought they should have cut ties (if poss) with MAF last spring.
I really felt he needed a clean break at minimum, and prob some kind of sports psych therapy too.
But they kept him so it is what it is.
He’s been very strong thus far…..which as we all know mean absolutely Nothing.

I like the guy and wish him the best in playoffs but I have no illusions. I expect him to be shaky and the Pens fortunes to turn on him completely. Hope he’s better than what I am expecting……

  54. hockeymonster says:

Compared to their replacements??? They most def are ringers!

  55. PurpleMoose says:

Scuderi could use a week in the press box whether he is tired or old or just plain bad, he needs some time to watch the game from up high.

  56. Aaron says:

pretty boy speed skaters…..I this tablet keyboard about as much as the flyers….Niskanen and Maata not included in overgeneralization of defense above, for the record.

  57. hockeymonster says:

    Brandie FIND A TV!!!!

  58. Sarah says:

Milbury calling Disco out for saying Pens are a “grinding team”…. Hilarious. I’m verklempt….

  59. Aaron says:

one more goal and I take it all back…lol

  60. Aaron says:

Off topic here, but did you guys see that vomitous deal with Giroux NBC did during 1 st intermission? Since Dec 11th he has more points than Sid. So, does that mean we can just wipe out 2.5 month periods of the season we don’t like?

  61. Sarah says:

He needs to be bought out. Completely redundant if they mean to keep Orpik.

  62. Sarah says:

    Joe V looking good.

  63. Brandie says:

    Why Monsterovsky?

  64. PurpleMoose says:

OK 87 and 71 we are now on a power play to tie the game. Forget the injuries, you have a man advantage…..what are the superstars going to do?

  65. Brandie says:

Oh I see. The Pens are playing Sybil style hockey. Pay no attention to the team personality that was on the ice in the first period.

  66. Sarah says:

How many mins does Glass have on L1?

  67. PurpleMoose says:

Derek Engellend and Taylor Pyatt on the Power Play…………………..yeah we got some organizational depth.

  68. Brandie says:

If that were the case then I would wipe out huge sections of my life where I looked like sh$t!

  69. Aaron says:

Pens have given up 2 power play goals and a shorthanded goal. Special teams are special indeed…!

  70. Rbilak says:

    3. Point 3 as called. DE on powerplay? That is on coach. No excuse for that. None. 3-2 game and Dan puts DE on point. Wow!

  71. Aaron says:

If we, as fans, can see all of this stuff why can’t ownership?

  72. Rbilak says:

Called it. #5 on powerplay is grounds for firing. 3-2 game you have momentum on your side and your coach does that? Wow!

  73. Rbilak says:

    Exactly why?

  74. Sarah says:

Cos ownership is happy with what they’ve got.
    Lotsa reg season sellouts.
    That’s all.

  75. Sarah says:

Seriously Peeps we got Glass on 1st line, we got Engo on PP.
    It’s crazy stuff.

  76. PurpleMoose says:

Nice play Gibbons and Megna. Now paging Mr Malkin and Mr Crosby, paging 87 and 71 where are you this weekend, your team needs you.

  77. Aaron says:

I can see why they sent Megna back down to WBS. Who needs a bigger forward with hustle that can finish?

  78. PurpleMoose says:

But he has 5 goals this year, that’s all Coach One Plan Dan needs to know.

  79. Aaron says:

    there is that.

  80. Sarah says:

Thank god enough people got hurt so that Megna could come up and score goals.

  81. Sarah says:

Disco is getting goals in spite of himself.

  82. hockeymonster says:

    I noticed a lil extra jump :)

  83. PurpleMoose says:

So Engellend as the point man was falling down and decides to pass the puck backwards toward the point he was supposed to be at instead of forward and deeper into the offensive zone??????

  84. hockeymonster says:

Goc is a monster on the boards…pardon the pun….

  85. Jandy says:

MAF should start whacking his own players with his goalie stick, indeed. This has been horrible. I enjoyed my turkey dinner, did not enjoy most of the first two periods of this game.

  86. Jandy says:

Gibbon’s hard work and smart play set up the Megna goal.

  87. Jandy says:

clean it up when you’re done, please ;)

  88. Jandy says:

Giroux is a Sid wannabe….lame fellow….get his own star and shine it…if he’s up to it.

  89. Jandy says:

Disco is NOT getting the goals. OUr big hearted boys are.

  90. Sarah says:

Yes. Yes, Engo, our number 13-14 F , or number 7-8 D is in fact our PP1 guy.

  91. Jandy says:

You’re saying Kuni and Duper aren’t good players? They aren’t missed?

  92. hockeymonster says:

    Thank goodness we scratched despres….

  93. Sarah says:

    You’re right J!
Our boys are saving Disco from himself !

  94. Brandie says:

I think your size 9 Wides had something to do with it. :)

  95. Jandy says:

If it’s Borts or Depres, I much prefer Borts today

  96. Jandy says:

    LOL..looks that way Sarovsky ;)

  97. hockeymonster says:

Im thinking engo for pyatt with despres and borts…

  98. Jandy says:

I wish! But honestly, the pens scored two of their goals when I was in the kitchen busy and not paying attention. Go figure…I had to watch replays.

  99. Jandy says:

I had hopes for Pyatt. Does he do anything well? Except take up space, that is?

  100. Jandy says:

    Where is the purple one?

  101. Wild Bill says:

Just got home to this…….game. Missed the game yesterday while watching the PSU hockey team beat Ohio State.

Flyers doing what they always do, be aggravating and see if we’ll take the bait. Plus, they are at full compliment of players while the Pens aren’t.

Hope we can play a great third.

  102. hockeymonster says:

He’s just over exposed as much as anything. If we were healthy and he was filling in on occasion he would look adequate in spurts.

  103. hockeymonster says:

Nice. How did skoff and loik look?

  104. PurpleMoose says:

He plays like he is about 5’9″ and about 180.

  105. theplanisworking says:

And, of course I posted some thought on the Morning thread instead of here.
    Long week.

Pens need to pick it up in the 3rd. No more short-handed goals.

Teams that are tough and gritty will give the Pens problems. Until the pens get back to their grit that was evident in 2009, they will continue to suffer.

  106. Wild Bill says:

Both played well, I thought. The compete level on Friday was poor, much better yesterday. Skoff gave up a screened one and one off a rebound scramble, but still a 4 – 2 win.

  107. Wild Bill says:

Sorry Hm. This was to your question above.

  108. Brandie says:

    Awesome win for PSU.

    Greetings Ain’t Housebroke Yet Bill!

  109. Jandy says:

There you are, Oh Purple One ;)

  110. hockeymonster says:

No problem. Cant believe that coach doesn’t play skoff as his #1. Don’t get it. Loik is waaay underused too.

  111. Jandy says:

    damn..what a blown chance

  112. Brandie says:

    Greetings Plancey Thigpen!

  113. theplanisworking says:

Yeah, I posted on the other thread by mistake.

Cheer the Pens on, I am out for another bit.

    Purple One……….. LOL

  114. theplanisworking says:

    Brandimal !

Greetings, and see you later! L(

  115. hockeymonster says:

    5’9 on skates

  116. Jandy says:

Well, fine then, be that way :P

  117. Wild Bill says:

    Howdy, Brandie!

  118. Sarah says:

Y’know Peeps, these are the games where I wonder if our defensive specialist J. Martin has much input…..shorthanded in top 6… You’d think we’d play a verrryy tight boring defensive game….yet we go on to give up 3 early….

  119. PurpleMoose says:

You can blame the injuries all you want (and the Penguin excuse makers surely will) but you have two of the best players in the world and 3 other pretty good players on the Power Play and you go 0 for 9 this weekend? On the PP you have an extra player and the injuries are a non factor, 87 and 71 have to be better than this.

  120. Jandy says:

    Malkin is snakebitten

  121. Sarah says:

Bourque asking if we have seen Sid n. Geno out there at all this game?….I think No…

  122. Jandy says:

Something! He can’t friggin find the net to save himself!

  123. Aaron says:

    If only we could fin….

  124. Jandy says:

I just saw Geno miss on two nice chances…Sid? Haven’t seen him

  125. Jandy says:

Nice job breaking that up, Engo!

  126. Sarah says:

    Yes good play!

  127. Jandy says:

That was a helluva hit Megna took

  128. PurpleMoose says:

And Jamie Dixon with a silly timeout

  129. Jandy says:

    snakebitten i tell you!

  130. Aaron says:

Being a pens fan right niw is like dating a beautiful person that happens to be both psychotic and predictable. You know what you are you going to get…..heartache and frustration….. but the allure is just too much and you keep coming back.

Best player in the world couldn’t light the lamp against Mason to tie the game and then loses the faceoff to Giroux and then hits the post 6 inches from the net.

  131. Jandy says:

Your last word says it about Sid and Geno these last two games.

  132. hockeymonster says:

That was like the end of game 6 on ought 8.

  133. PurpleMoose says:

Well my weekend summary is talk about the injuries all you want but your two best players were healthy and playing and had 9 power play chances and scored 0 goals between to the two of them. Much like the Bruins series last year, if your two best players cannot score then you don’t have much of a chance.

  134. Wild Bill says:

Well, a richly deserved loss. Give up pp goal and shorty in the same game for the second day in a row.

    Best get guys healed up.

  135. PurpleMoose says:

Has Crosby ever won a faceoff at the end of a crucial game?

  136. Jandy says:

Zatkoff did a good job when he was put in. He didn’t know he was supposed to roll over and die…I give him a lotta credit.

  137. Sarah says:

Here’s hoping we don’t meet this team in playoffs.

  138. J Walter Weatherman says:

Well, at least this team isn’t getting our hopes up prior to the playoffs.

  139. Rbilak says:

I am sure the Spin will be the almost comeback and injuries. Instead the focus should be sleepwalking first period, short-handed goals, why such poor coaching decisions again! number one being #5 on powerplay, deep in zone. Hartnell, Rinaldo took runs all day, still almost zero response. I believe Martin will make a difference, notably on point, but this team and this coach instill no confidence they can get it done in playoffs.

  140. Aaron says:

Can the Pens do the smart and honorable thing and forfeit their playoff spot and spare us all the embarrassment we know is coming?

  141. Sarah says:

What was the GW? the shorty off Engo?
    Yeah glad we sat Despres.

  142. J Walter Weatherman says:

If the Pens meet the Flyers in the playoffs, Zatkoff should start, and there shouldn’t even be any controversy about that. It’s obvious that Fleury still hasn’t exorcised his demons.

  143. Aaron says:

Can we play Washington every round?

  144. DJ says:

Was at the game. Will be interested to see Sid’s FO% against Giroux.

    Giroux owns him.

  145. DJ says:

Yup. I was thinking the same move, HM.

And I’m not even an Engelland at wing fan.

  146. Aaron says:

I would like to start a petition to modify Sids title of “Best player in the world” to include “when things don’t really matter all that much and no one is trying to aggravate him”

I get that he doesn’t have duper and kunitz is out, but shouldn’t the best player in the world elevate his play and improve all those around him and lead the team in a way that maintains focus and composure?

    Just sayin,,,,

  147. Jandy says:

UGH, the comments here are killing me…later…

  148. Aaron says:

I hate to admit it, but the more I watch this team it seems that the cariacture of Sid that other teams like Philly perpetuate seem to be accurate.

  149. Aaron says:

    Is Crosby off limits?

  150. Sarah says:

No it isn’t. If you put this loss on MAF you’re not paying attention.

  151. Sarah says:

How often was Sid out there v. Coutourier??
Did Disco try to avoid that?
I’ve just been listening so couldn’t watch but for highlights….

  152. DJ says:

Said this many weeks ago but the loss of Dupuis has been huge for Sid.

  153. Aaron says:

it seems like every team has one guy that knows exactly how to play Sid so he gets flustered and frustrated and then everything goes downhill from there.

I’m no hockey expert, but so much of what they do seems counterintuitive and illogical.

Are they trying to be so smart they are achieving the opposite, or are the coaches really that clueless? That is not a rhetorical question, I am really interested in someone else’s take on that one.

  154. Aaron says:

Spot on! Nothing has been the same since he went down.

  155. J Walter Weatherman says:

Zatkoff is playing better then Fleury right now, but yes, defense is the main culprit. It won’t really matter who’s in goal if they continue playing like they have since the Olympic break.

  156. Aaron says:

Even the announcers said pulling MAF was a mercy pull and it wasn’t Hus fault.

  157. Sarah says:

Guys duper is a career 3rd liner and tho he has chem w Sid, Sid needs someone with hands not just speed.

  158. Sarah says:

Engo was on the PP and we lost on a shorty while Engo was out there,
HOW can anyone defend E go on the PP?

  159. Sarah says:

Sorry. Zatkoff is not in the same league as MAF. Not close.

  160. Sarah says:

Nope not at all. IMO from what I saw this wknd he looked like he couldn’t care less.

  161. Sarah says:

Disco really is that stubborn which in many cases looks exactly like Clueless. And acts like it too. See PP, Engelland. And PK, Adams. And Press Box, Despres.

  162. DJ says:

    My final comment is this.

I would not read too much into this past weekend versus the Flyers. Just too many mix and match parts to have a real gauge of where we are and what this team can be come playoff time. Really just need to get healthy.

It may be more a case of frustration.

I just see many problems, and few answers.

Main thing is, the Pens have to get healthy before the playoffs start. If they don’t, the team isn’t going to go far.

Both Neal and Kunitz being out was a killer. Heard that Bennett might not be too far away, so there’s hope even if only at the 3rd/4th line level.

Watched Stemp and Goc a good deal today and came away favorably impressed. Would like to see what this team is able to do once we start rolling 4 lines.

I hope they get healthy too. But let’s not throw in the towel cos Neal and Kuni are out.
Which many posters this weekend seemed to hint….

And will Rossi or any of our heroic Pens media make mention of Engo on the PP? Resulting in the GWG shorty?
Imagine if this was TO or God forbid MTL.

  168. DJ says:

I’d say that line did just fine when they were all healthy, Sarah.

What Duper does is go get the puck in the corners and behind the net and then forecheck. Sid is spending too much time and energy just having his line gain possession.

Duper’s loss has been huge to both Sid’s line and the ripple effect on the 3rd and 4th lines as well.

    Engo give up the shorty.
Bylsma, in a fit of rage, benches Despres. ;)

  170. DJ says:

Not throwing in towel or giving anyone a pass, particularly yesterday. Just looking at this realistically.

And sends Megna back to WBS and releases Bortuzzo…
