  2. Sarah says:

    Game day skate lines.

    Kunitz-Crosby-Stempniak, Jokinen-Malkin-Neal, Glass-Goc-Vitale, Gibbons-Sutter-Adams.

    : Orpik-Niskanen, Scuderi-Maatta, Bortuzzo-Despres. Engelland and Letang rotated on a fourth pair

  3. DJ says:

Let’s hope for same result again tonight.

I really like what I am seeing from Goc and Stempy. Goc, in particular, is to be credited for making the small, simple plays — the kind that generally go unnoticed but contribute to Ws.

Shero’s least ballyhooed trade deadline year yet he seems to have mined a couple of gems.

  4. hockeymonster says:

Ok, so don’t mean to be repetitive but put together my random thoughts on nhl draft and NCAA prospect in one cohesive piece. Cool highlight clip of pens future 1st round pick too. :)

    http://www.pensburgh.com/2014/3/20/5529340/time-to-catch-the-chl-draft

  5. hockeymonster says:

    +++

Glad you like the pick up DJ!

  6. Brandie says:

Revvie…I would like your email address.

Jandy…can you please resend yours? Thanks.

  7. Poz says:

The battle of the injured teams. Both have suffered more than their share this year.

Disipline play and do not turn the puck over in your own end lads. Let the flow and snipers take over.

    Go Pens!

  8. hockeymonster says:

UPSET CITY BABY!!! PSU WITH A SHOCKER!!! Skoff held the fort big time and Saar with the chicken dinner in 2nd OT!!!

  9. Brandie says:

    Wonderful news.

  10. Brandie says:

Thank you Revvie. I know I am at a crossroads with a lot of things. I may need you to help me put on my big girl britches and deal.

  11. theplanisworking says:

Hope you are hanging in there, Brandimal.

Sending you the best of thoughts !

  12. Brandie says:

And the basketball team (men’s) won in the first round of the CBI (Could Be Interesting) tournament. The wrestling team has 9 wrestlers going for titled at the NCAA’S. Who said PSU was just a football school?

  13. Brandie says:

Gotta lotta sh&t to face Casey Plandaele, but knowing I can ask for and get support is tremendous. :)

  14. Barb says:

Hey darlin’ how ya hangin’? Glad to see you are here this evening. I’m keeping you in my prayers.

  15. Barb says:

I can’t get used to the Redwings in the Eastern Division now. Great win for the Panthers. Lets’ keep the steam roller rolling and our Buccos are up 1-0. I think I have it all covered.

  16. theplanisworking says:

I would offer my e-mail address, but Animal Planet would harass you, so I will just stick to good thoughts.

    ;)

  17. Brandie says:

Thanks Bodacious. Gotta lotta demons to face but I am getting help and support. Now I gotta take it and run with it. Hope the world is treationg you well.

  18. theplanisworking says:

Barb, you are our official sports source ! ;)

  19. Barb says:

It is especially after I spent the afternoon with my niece and her 3 year old. Little ones help make you forget all the ugliness. And speaking of ugly the wrong team scored.

  20. Brandie says:

That is a good nickname…I dub thee Bodacious Barb….Sports Source AKA The Source!

  21. Sarah says:

For all you young squirt D out there, that’s called “backing in too far”. Your goaltender will not appreciate it.

  22. Barb says:

    I try. :)

  23. Brandie says:

Boys gotta pick themselves up then.

  24. Barb says:

Oooh I like it too. It’s better than Barbie Doll, blech!

  25. Brandie says:

Sarahpova has spoken and she is wise.

  26. Barb says:

Come on guys help MAF out.

  27. DJ says:

. . . and for all you little tike Bortuzzos out there, often better to keep your skates than laying out across the ice.

Twice in 5 or 6 days Bortuzzo burned for leaving his skates — Philly and Detroit.

  28. Sarah says:

Nisky and Orpik not a good combo.

  29. Barb says:

    Ain’t that the truth.

  30. DJ says:

Are you plagiarizing this cat again, HM?

  31. Milo Hamilton says:

So when’s Geno due back from the Olympics ?

  32. Barb says:

    What he’s not here?!?!?!?!

  33. DJ says:

Yeah, but not as bad as Orpik — Scuderi.

See, like HM says, just trying to see the positives.

  34. Sarah says:

Agreed. I’d assume Disco is trying to split up his PMD and pair one each w Scud and Orpik.
And here’s hoping Despres and Borts aren’t sent to Siberia after this game.

  35. Poz says:

The Wings player without the puck was smothered. Unfortunately the old guy with the puck skated freely until he decided to shoot and score. Playoff ready, they are.

  36. Sarah says:

Actually he passed it off Scuderis stick. But hey a goal anyway.

  37. Sarah says:

And Neal is an idiot again. Wow.

  38. Milo Hamilton says:

He should be suspended for that. What a bonehead.

  39. Milo Hamilton says:

    So disciplined, this group.

  40. Sarah says:

    For craps sake

  41. DJ says:

    And the pairing?

Well, their initials are Orpik — Scuderi.

  42. Sarah says:

Anyone looking forward to a potential 1st rd vs DET?

  43. Andrew says:

Have not called the first penalty all night, but still no excuse. Need the second line to score, they get sheltered minutes, not take penalties.

  44. DJ says:

    Stempy.

    Needed that one.

  45. Sarah says:

    Again!

  46. hockeymonster says:

Ok just catching up…1st of all…Brandiskaya…just know things are never as bad as they seem. Secondly, did the pens take a stupid pill today? Why so many awful penalties?

  47. Milo Hamilton says:

    They are absolutely maddening sometimes.

  48. Andrew says:

Complete and utter reversal of momentum, fortune, whatever you want to call it.

  49. Milo Hamilton says:

The Pens are 3 for 5 with a 2 man advantage this year. That’s exactly what I was thinking, only 5 ?

  50. theplanisworking says:

Somebody was asking where Malkin was?

    I think we found him.

  51. DJ says:

Welcome home, Geno. We missed you.

  52. hockeymonster says:

Catching up on dvr but was that a forward in the high slot on stempy’s tip? Sarah, you see that? An adjustment!!! :)

  53. DJ says:

Yeah, they’re watching the Giroux footage from the past weekend.

  54. Too many bottles of wine for Jandy. Must have nodded off.

  55. Sarah says:

I mostly see 2 periods of sloppiness and undisciplined penalties….but talent carried the day! Over the space of what about a minute and a half….
    Maddening indeed ……

  56. Sarah says:

I’m very worried about what those couple minutes of skill are masking…..

  57. hockeymonster says:

Ya normally they save those cross checks for philly.

  58. Milo Hamilton says:

    A bottle of white,
    A bottle of red.

  59. theplanisworking says:

    Bottle?
    I am thinking more like a case………

  60. Andrew says:

Two periods? I thought the Pens played well in the 1st, out shot the Wings, and outside a terrible shift by the Sutter line had the better of the play, but yeah the first 15 of the 2nd was about as bad as it gets.

  61. hockeymonster says:

Typos per shift just went down.

  62. DJ says:

    Note to Sid and Sutter:

On breakaways, think backhand 90% of the time.

  63. chethejet1 says:

Stemp is a veteran that knows where to go and is getting better in his reads. His hands are superior to Dupuis but his end to end speed is not. Tight cap kept Shero under control and actually made moves that were far better than last years “all in” give up the farm approach. This team is still uninspiring on so many levels that the playoffs have to get them interested or hello Nemacolin.

  64. theplanisworking says:

    True.
Without Brandie and Jandy, its almost a typo-free zone.

  65. Wild Bill says:

Milo, were you asking about Malkin’s arrival?

  66. Milo Hamilton says:

I like Geno. I just miss him when he’s not around.

  67. Andrew says:

Are these officials just making it up as they go?

  68. Sarah says:

Yep mostly. No sustained pressure, the usual turnovers and passes to nowhere. Orpik and Nisky having lead up their youknowwhats….one shift they got trapped in the zone for about a minute at ES.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

I guess their guy shooting the stick to his teammate was OK. Ridiculous.

  70. DJ says:

With you on the first three points.

We’ll all see on the fourth — time will tell.

  71. J Walter Weatherman says:

I’d think about making Scuderi the 7th defenseman.

  72. Wild Bill says:

Hey Monster, thanks for the PSU shout out. Saw the winner right before I had to go to a meeting. A big day for the Lions.

Hope we have something left for the Badgers.

  73. DJ says:

Tatar with the stake . . . or steak.

  74. Sarah says:

    What a call.

  75. hockeymonster says:

No problem. If they play like today they can give them a run. WI goalie is legit though.

  76. Sarah says:

Just glad he didn’t injure Olli…..what a doof.

  77. hockeymonster says:

Believe it or not refs in psu game were worse.

  78. J Walter Weatherman says:

Some bad bounces in this game, but no excuses for all the dumb penalties. This Detroit team is not good.

  79. Sarah says:

Good lord maybe Maatta is injured….Wth?

  80. Wild Bill says:

Anybody else think that something’s not right with Scuderi?

  81. DJ says:

    Not Bortuzzo’s best effort tonight.

Casual and then easily stripped behind the net.

  82. DJ says:

I put that one on Bortuzzo.

  83. J Walter Weatherman says:

This would be the type of game where Craig Adams scores.

  84. Sarah says:

Yes. Since he came back from the ankle.
Or by Not Right do you mean Not Right for this system?
    Cos that too.

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

Hooray for Craig Adams. Gives us a chance to do one more really stupid thing.

  86. Wild Bill says:

The Hobbit and Adams? U kiddin me?.

  87. theplanisworking says:

I don’t know what to make of this game.

Either the Pens were overconfident, or just not concerned with effort.
Nice to see Geno get a couple goals.

Pens have many games coming up the next 10 days.
Need to get it in gear.

  88. Wild Bill says:

    Unsure between injury or aging.

  89. DJ says:

Is it possible to take a penalty in a shootout,?

  90. J Walter Weatherman says:

And I thought Letang was the problem with that pairing. Maybe not. The Piece doesn’t fit.

  91. Sarah says:

    Ok. Twilight Zone.

More ice time for Adams YAY!!!

  92. Milo Hamilton says:

I was thinking we could put another one in for them. A hat trick of own goals, if you will.

  93. theplanisworking says:

And, of course as soon as I type that, they score.

Maybe that wine made its way here?

  94. DJ says:

    Priceless.

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

Leqwand butt ended him in the lower mid section. 5 minute major. What a moron.

  96. Wild Bill says:

Malkin might sing an octave higher after that foul.

  97. Sarah says:

I think the very private part lower mid section. What a cheap shot.

  98. J Walter Weatherman says:

There has been a lot of stupid hockey played by both teams tonight.

  99. Andrew says:

This is total hindsight bias, but the penalty was caused by slip shod officiating, been calling the second penalty all night.

  100. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s how Vince McMahon always referred to it back in his announcing days.

  101. Sarah says:

With the way this game has gone just hoping for no Shorty.

  102. DJ says:

A 5:00 major. Can someone please go to the front of the net?

  103. J Walter Weatherman says:

NC State just finished losing an all-time choke job.

  104. hockeymonster says:

Hence the phrase ‘initiate don’t retaliate’.

  105. J Walter Weatherman says:

I think Niskanen gets approximately 99% of his shots blocked.

  106. Milo Hamilton says:

Some of these kids can’t grasp the concept of “free” throws.

  107. hockeymonster says:

He was awful on that 1st GA. He just fell and slid out of the play. Shaky rest of game but still want him playing ahead of engo for now.

  108. Andrew says:

I completely agree, but officials have responsibility to call infractions.

  109. Milo Hamilton says:

You should expect the Wings to get a power play now.

  110. hockeymonster says:

No consistency is a theme. But when you take undisciplined and uncalled for cross checking penalties the refs are gonna keep their eye on you. We really need to address this going into the playoffs.

  111. Milo Hamilton says:

You know, sometimes a tie is a just result. This is one of those games.

  112. hockeymonster says:

    Did that just happen?

  113. DJ says:

    A fitting ending.

  114. J Walter Weatherman says:

Of course it did. It was predestined to end this way.

  115. Milo Hamilton says:

And there it is. The own goal hat trick.

  116. hockeymonster says:

    MYE-LOOOOOOOOO…..noooo…..

  117. J Walter Weatherman says:

This is the most goals Scuderi has scored in the last 5 seasons.

  118. Sarah says:

    Well good lord.
At this point I’m just glad nobody got injured.

What a game for Scuderi, yay!!!

  119. hockeymonster says:

I’m glad this happened. No team deserves to win taking 3 consecutive petulant penalties. And a few more to boot.

  120. Wild Bill says:

Job one – keep the puck out of your own net.

  121. Poz says:

This team’s defense is playoff primed.

  122. DJ says:

Three more years to look forward to.

  123. Sarah says:

    Don’t forget Orpik getting extended!

  124. theplanisworking says:

First round exit if they don’t get this fixed………

  125. Andrew says:

On the plus side the Penguins got a point.

  126. J Walter Weatherman says:

The Penguins are not a good team right now. That was a bad Detroit team they lost to, and you can argue about them being “unlucky” tonight, but they’re now 7-8 over their past 15 games. As has been the case all season, the only reason they might make a run to the ECF is because the East is so weak. If they played Boston in a 7 game series right now, it would end exactly the same as last year.

Even if you dismiss the own goals by Scuderi tonight, he has had a horrible season, and it looks like a disastrous signing. Remember, he has 3 years left on his deal. I’m pretty sure that money could’ve been used to bolster the third or fourth lines, which is still the glaring weakness on this team.

  127. DJ says:

Alright, you’ve just ruined my evening.

  128. The Pens just lost in overtime with a second left. At least Pitt won beat the living daylights out of Colorado today or it would’ve been worse.

  129. theplanisworking says:

If he had value left, the Kings would have re-signed him.
    Think about that.

  130. J Walter Weatherman says:

Btw, I thought Malkin had an outstanding game. It looked liked he was the only Penguin who really wanted to win.

  131. Poz says:

Did the Pens lose a third period lead! Must be an anomaly. Never do they lose a lead late.

  132. DJ says:

    These guys never learn.

The lack of purpose on the 5:00 major was stark. Falling in love with their perimeter passing, Sid trying to thread cross-ice passes . . . meanwhile, no one in front of the net until the last 20 seconds of penalty in OT.

Haven’t we all seen this before?

  133. Poz says:

I thought Sutter had a decent game. But if the Pens are as talented as the hype says then they should have dispatched of the undermanned wings. Especially having the lead going into the third, and with a prolonged man advantage at the end of the game. Crap loss when other teams, like the bruins are rounding into playoff shape.

  134. J Walter Weatherman says:

There is plenty of time for the Pens to round into playoff shape, but something hasn’t felt right about this team since the middle of January. Does anyone think they have a realistic chance of getting to the Finals, much less win the Cup?

Oddly, as bad as Letang has been this year, he could be the positive difference as they gear up for the playoffs.

Bylsma treats every post game like the other team is equally loaded and just can’t seem to get that the team he coaches does have a decided edge in talent. I don’t know if nice guys finish last, but they do have a hard time finishing a sentence.

I think it is not a coincidence that this stretch occurred when; their two ice time leading puck moving defensemen are out of the lineup. If the Penguins want to make a playoff run they need one of those two in the lineup, cut Scuderi’s ice time possibly push him from the lineup, unlikely. That contract was four years too late.

Need to piece together a passable bottom six, or at least a third line, the team’s success has built upon playing to a draw even strength, and winning with great special teams play. Need more depth in they want to improve on even strength play.

I just watched the game on DVR…..I wish I hadn’t.

Scuderi is actually French for “score for Detroit”

    Wow….
