Sure hope we’re one for two in the Pittsburgh sports department today!

    Welcome back, Mr. Martin!

  3. Brandie says:

    He’s the Real Piece!

  4. theplanisworking says:

    Real Piece of What, exactly?

    Piece of Work?
    Piece of Cake?
    Piece of Pie?
    Piece of the Puzzle?
    Piece Out? ;)

  5. Pucknutz says:

“They’re a talented but flawed and injured team.”
From Starkeys column today. Good read.

IMHO almost right on the mark.

  6. Andrew says:

  7. Pucknutz says:

The D is lookin better with that lineup. Scuds/ Borts might even work.

  8. Sarah says:

    We’ll, PM is back.
Despres to Siberia now I guess?

  9. Sarah says:

    Pyatt Gladams woo woo!!
    Will never exit the zone.

  10. Jandy says:

  11. Sarah says:

    And Stemp to 3rd line.
    So BB gets a look w Sid…..

  12. Jandy says:

I don’t like Stempy on the third line.

  13. Jandy says:

Bahahaha…when she finished singing the anthems hubby shouted out “Play Ball!”

  14. Pucknutz says:

    Me too or three.

  15. Gene-Zo says:

    Cheswick, PA !

  16. Barb says:

How about “Give Peace a Chance”?!?!?!?!

  17. Pucknutz says:

Maybe I am an old sentimental sucker…… but I just love that Root show the anthems … old fart like me saluting the flag…. priceless. :)

  18. Jandy says:

Welcome GenoZo!! Pull up a chair and chat a spell :)
We’ll make sure Biz has you added to the Lunatic’s list :)

  19. Jandy says:

Oh I love it too. It’s something this country needs to remember…patriotic pride.

  20. Sarah says:

Stemp’s meshed w Sid really well. I really thought Bylsma would leave that alone, give BB Malkins LW and move JJ.
But let’s see what happens I guess.

  21. cberry88 says:

I would like to nominate Rick Sebak to your list. No one connects our city’s past to its present like Rick does. Terrific person.

  22. Pucknutz says:

Agree w/ya Sarah, but then again maybe lets see what BB can do w/ Sid. Not much to lose at this point in the season.

  23. Barb says:

GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and on a PP to boot!

  24. Andrew says:

It is great when the second PP unit doesn’t have Orpik out there at the end.

  25. Sarah says:

    What do we know??? Bennett!

  26. Pucknutz says:

Well…. maybe BB can play w/Sid!
Took the pass, one timed it…….. Hmmm…

  27. Sarah says:

Guessing Stempy may have to get used to the 3rd line…..

Sweet set up from Sid to Beau…..

Right after a short handed odd man for Peg…..

  28. Jandy says:

  29. Sarah says:

Glass on 3rd line wtf? Where’s Megna???

  30. Barb says:

    Good Evening Jandy!

  31. Sarah says:

Boom boom some hitting going on

  32. Jandy says:

  33. Eric Bowser says:

    Welcome back Paul Martin!!

Beau Bennett gets PP time w/ Crosby and team puts him on LW for one-timer, he could score 10-15 PP goals. Easy. I hope the coaches saw that and will wake up about the lack of one-timer shots in that area of ice.

Paul Maurice takes puck to the head and keeps on coaching… now that’s a hockey coach.

  34. Sarah says:

So Beau scored as a right handed shot on the PP.
    Um….is that legal??

  35. Jandy says:

16 hits for the Peg to 6 hits for us

  36. Barb says:

What is it about the 2nd Period that the Pens just give up? Sheesh.

  37. Jandy says:

  38. Purple Moose says:

How many goals have been scored this year with Scuderi standing on the edge of the blue paint with his back toward center ice just watching the puck go in?

He never has a body on anybody which I guess would explain his whopping total of 0 penalty minutes on the year.

  39. Sarah says:

He’s protecting his zero PIM for the year.
    Gotta have priorities.

  40. Andrew says:

    There is your penalty.

  41. Purple Moose says:

OMG, you mean Scuderi finally touched an opposing player. Hallelujah.

  42. Milo Hamilton says:

Oh no, there it is. 1st time this season he’s gotten close enough to someone to commit a penalty.

  43. Purple Moose says:

But who will kill the penalty now?

  44. Sarah says:

Gibbons on the first PK. Good.

  45. Sarah says:

Wow even Errey is finally sick of Adams.

  46. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m afraid the Lady Byng may have just gone right out the window.

  47. Andrew says:

Scuderi off the PK makes it infinitely better, which is another reason to be glad Martin is back

  48. Jandy says:

    lol on wings!

  49. Andrew says:

I think there is a small level of play requirement, you cannot be the 8th best defenseman.

  50. Sarah says:

    Good lord

  51. Jandy says:

  52. Purple Moose says:

I said it in December and it still holds true today, this has to be the worst 3rd and 4th lines on a 1st place team in the history of the game.

  53. Purple Moose says:

So um what happened to resting Fleury down the stretch?

  54. Eric Bowser says:

They need to do same with Scuderi, Orpik, Niskanen, Crosby, Kunitz, and Neal.

  55. Sarah says:

Man we just look beer league in front of our net.
    And I know beer league.

  56. J Walter Weatherman says:

When does Shero get as much or more blame than Bylsma for this team’s faults?

  57. Eric Bowser says:

From that spot… I mean really…. Adams???? LOL

  58. Jandy says:

  59. Jandy says:

  60. Andrew says:

Those folks in Winnipeg better save their ticket stubs.

  61. Eric Bowser says:

Been talking about Shero for 2 years with relation to his draft & development program.

What you see… or don’t see, on the third lines is his fault. Pure and simple, his fault.

  62. Purple Moose says:

Scuderi taking a penalty and Adams scoring………………is that frogs I see falling out of the sky?

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

    **Foregone Conclusion Alert**

The Penguins have just clinched the Metropolitan Division.

Break out the champagne. Or not.

  64. Sarah says:

Sigh. Now Adams will play another 600 games in a row…..

  65. Sarah says:

Bylsma just extended Adams’ contract 16 years

  66. J Walter Weatherman says:

Maybe he needs to visit Neal Huntington and Frank Coonelly to learn how to draft and develop players.

    I’m kidding.

I agree with your assessment. How a “top notch” organization can be so bad at drafting and developing offensive talent is disturbing.

  67. Jandy says:

    Pigs flying ;)

  68. Jandy says:

I’ll keep it on ice just a bit ;)

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

I settled for a chocolate cupcake. A rare treat.

  70. scapper says:

How dare you inject something positive into this blog, Milo!

Sure, these Pens have managed to amass 101 points and win a division despite unprecedented injuries, but let’s not focus on that. I mean, they’ve lost a whole third of their games. They’re awful! Bylsma can’t coach! Shero can’t general manage! The Zamboni driver doesn’t always drive in a perfectly straight line!

    I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season.

  71. Andrew says:

More importantly, FLyers only two points from falling to a wild card spot.

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

The best news with the Flyers losing & giving the Pens the division was that they lost to Columbus. CBJ now only 1 point behind Detroit.

  73. The Flyers lost to Columbus 2-0, so the Pens are Metropolitan Division Champs although right now, they’re tied with Winnipeg at 2, which is just fine since the Pirates lost earlier today to the Cubs. So now, all they have to do is win 250 for Coach Dan Bylsma and 100 at home. And then, it’s on to the playoffs, where they’ll hopefully do better than they’re currently projected to.

  74. scapper says:

Wrong. Best news is that it drives that stake a little deeper into the Caps’ heart. I live in Caps Country. Spring will be less stressful if they don’t make the playoffs.

  75. scapper says:

James, there is simply no place on this blog for such sentiments. You must focus on the negative elements of every shift and articulate why those elements prove the complete and total ineptitude of this terrible team. (Division title and 100+ points notwithstanding.)

  76. Milo Hamilton says:

I’d like to avoid them too.

  77. Milo Hamilton says:

Listening to Kornheiser today & they were just killing Oatsie.

  78. Jandy says:

Hubby not feeling well. I made him a hot toddy. hot cup of tea with a shot and a half of SoCo in it ;) He’s snoring lol

  79. Andrew says:

Does Kornheiser know anything about hockey, honest question?

  80. Milo Hamilton says:

No & he admits it freely. It’s pretty funny actually.

  81. Bizrow says:

    Got Cheswick

    Thanks to all

  82. Andrew says:

    Welcome back Martin.

  83. Jandy says:

    welcome back Paul Martin :)

  84. Eric Bowser says:

such a huge return for Pens to get Martin back. Does so much for team.

  85. Andrew says:

    Well said.

  86. Jandy says:

    what about Sebak?

  87. Jandy says:

    Great Minds

  88. Vette60 says:

    Hey there.

Technology is an amazing thing. Listening to the Pens via their app while posting on the blog while sitting here having a cerveza here in lovely Chihuahua Mexico. Life can’t get much better?

Looking forward to coming home tomorrow and the hockey playoffs for the Pens despite their faults and hopefully another great Buccos season.

    Later all.
    Randy in RVA.

  89. Milo Hamilton says:

Cheswick, home of Glen’s Custard. Featured on one of Rick Sebak’s specials.

  90. Jandy says:

    Hi Randy!

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

457 – left center at Forbes Field.

  92. Milo Hamilton says:

Chihuahua, Mexico – hometown of Mario Mendoza.

  93. Eric Bowser says:

What a selfish penalty by Sid.

  94. Bizrow says:

    Yes ;-)

  95. scapper says:

One of the highlights of my sorry life was getting a handwritten note from Tony Kornheiser telling me how much he’d laughed at something I’d written. This was when he was still ridiculously good columns for the Post and before he went the broadcast route.

  96. scapper says:

Don’t take this the wrong way…but I think I hate you.

    (Enjoy the cervezas!)

  97. Gene-Zo says:

Actually Glen’s is just across the line in Springdale, but Cheswick will take credit anyway!

  98. Bizrow says:

  99. scapper says:

I remember that, too, from the yearbooks I used to buy every opening day. I could probably name 3/4 of the birth cities of those 70s Pirates. (Like I said before…”my sorry life”)

  100. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m never sure where the border is. We have a Glen’s in Lower Burrell now. Walking distance, not necessarily a good thing. :)

  101. Jandy says:

  102. Jandy says:

so will DB bench him or bench Jussi?

  103. Milo Hamilton says:

How about this, of the 6 Penguins defensemen Scuderi has played the least.

  104. Jandy says:

    The Hobbit scores!!!

  105. Eric Bowser says:

    Gibbons…. really like his play.

  106. Jandy says:

  107. Eric Bowser says:

needs to happen more… a game off would be wise.

  108. Jandy says:

    I love his speed

  109. Jandy says:

Bigfukkinugly doesn’t look too happy lol

  110. Jandy says:

    woop woop!!

  111. Bizrow says:

I wonder if Dejan is there?? ;-)

  112. Vette60 says:

    Hey all.

Didn’t know the Mendoza line started right here.

Went out last night with local coworkers to watch the Mexico v USA friendly. That was a blast. Since it was a tie no bets were cashed but those lengua burritos sure were good either way.

These Modelos are great – must be because I am closer to the source.

    Adios compadres.

  113. Gene-Zo says:

    “Bigfukkinugly ”
    Love it!

  114. Jandy says:

Does a bear crap in the woods? ;)

  115. Jandy says:

lol thanks. I’d love to have him in a Pens sweater tho

  116. Jandy says:

    A good win :)

  117. JD says:

    +++ scrapper

  118. chethejet1 says:

give Sid a break. Rest Maatta, Kunitz is going through the motions. Does anyone think Bylsma is going to do that?

  119. scapper says:

Okay, now it’s official…I DO hate you.

    (Sounds like a great time!)

  120. Well, the Pens just beat a .500 Winnipeg team and cinched their division because the Flyers lost to Columbus, and they played better for at least one game tonight since Paul Martin is back in the lineup. And now, hopefully, they’ll continue to play better since it won’t bode well at all for the playoffs unless they do, not that I think they’ll do that well in post season for obvious reasons.

  121. Jim S. says:

Oh, he’s there. He’s marveling about the magnificent “air hockey-like” ice surface, and is disappointed that the crowd is not into it. DK loves him some Winipeg.

  122. Jim S. says:

We kind of got ripped off, don’t you think, Vette? Clear take down right where the field meets the box.

  123. Jim S. says:

I was at the game at 3 Rivers in which he got his first 3 hits.

I remember it well, from up in Peanut Heaven in LF. What was that old stadium announcer’s name? He was great. Was it Art something or other? Anyway, I remember after the 1st single, he said, “That was Mario Mendoza’s first major league hit.” Then, he got another single and he did it again. It got kind of funny when Mario got a 3rd single and he announced it again.

  124. JohninOshkosh says:

There can never ever be another first year winner of the Metropolitan Division. As long as hockey is played that banner belongs exclusively to the hockey team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Yet another division winning team and impressive 100+ point season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  125. The Pens are the best team in a weak division which fattened up too much early on mediocre opposition and now, they’re struggling through a post Olympics slump and it doesn’t look as if they’ll make the post season finals or win Lord Stanley’s Cup this time although I’m hopefully wrong about that, but then, well, they need to wake up and stay awake if they’re going to do anything worthwhile in post season.

  129. scapper says:

Yeah, but this and but that and what about this and don’t forget about that…

Just wanted to get in the usual dose of negativity in response to something positive about the Pens.

  130. firdalizer says:

  133. You’re shakin your head too hard again. Come people bring that out in you.

  134. “Some” people. Darn Brandie and Jandy typos.

  135. Brandie says:

Must strive for balance of negative and positive. Good to see Scuduzzo did not give the game away. And what is up with Scuderi taking a penalty and Adams actually scoring?

  136. Jandy says:

Some “people” spout nonsense in loooong run on sentences ;)

    G’mornin Spunkster :)

  137. Jandy says:

    G’mornin Sistah!
Was a decent game last night.
    A night surprises indeed.

  138. Same to ya. Are we allowed to say that today?

  139. Pucknutz says:

Martin back, BB looked pretty good w/Sid, get Geno back……Hmmm…..

  140. Wild Bill says:

Even before he scored, Martin was making a big difference – some of it with respect to the d pairings.

Forgive me if somebody noted this already.

  141. Jandy says:

I say what I dayum well please ;)

  142. Wild Bill says:

Wonder if the moderator was loose in the ‘peg a little longer than usual last night??

  143. Wild Bill says:

DK must have partied extra long last night. ;)
You just know he luvs him some Winnipeg. (2 n’s, Jim). ;)
Or, maybe he is still admiring the shiny ice surface……..

Glad the Pens picked up the W last night.
If the team can get some players back form injury, they might make some noise in the playoffs. The key will be to focus, focus, focus. No stupid penalties. No losing their minds, like against Boston. Still don’t feel good about the teams chances, but getting healthy sure won’t hurt.

Don’t think the Pirates will play today, supposed to be thunderstormy all day.

  146. Pucknutz says:

    Ya Bill,
Ain’t gettin too excited yet but…if BB is real and can stick w/Sid, Geno back … might even have enough left for a real third line,
    D ain’t look bad either.

  147. Jandy says:

BB didn’t play a shift the last 9 minutes of the game last night…waiting to see if there is a good reason or a bad reason…

  148. Picked up my Sports Illustrated in my mailbox last night around midnight when I got home. Just flipped it open this morning to find a 2-page picture of the joyous melee at home plate when Walker scored after his game winning homer.

Great picture of Walker’s ebullience, the players screaming, the beautiful city in the background . . . . . and Dejan’s favorite sign prominently blocking the city view.

  149. Pucknutz says:

Did not know that…… don’t sound good to me…..

  150. Welcome, Mr. Green Grass!

  151. TJA says:

    I will third that.

  152. Jandy says:

    no, it doesn’t :/

  153. Jandy says:

Hiya Fird…we’ll make sure Biz adds you to the Lunantic’s list my friend :)

  154. Drewmeister,

    I miss you!!!

  155. Jandy says:

I can’t wait to go home and see if MY SI came…I wanna see that picture :)

  156. Leo Walter says:

Antis Township ( near Altoona )

  157. Hey JandyGirl!

The look on Neil Walker’s face is priceless.

  158. Jandy says:

    Howdy, Neighbor, I’m in Duncansville.

  159. Jandy says:

Hi Bob! Come and chat a spell.

We’ll make sure Biz adds you to the Lunatic’s list :)

  160. Jandy says:

Oh and We’ll make sure Biz adds you to the Lunatic’s list as well :)

  161. They just cancelled Dejan’s Chat for today.

Word is, Dejan is too choked up to type after viewing his favorite sign in Sports Illustrated.

  162. Not far from me. 87.5 miles to be exact.

  163. The Peg got 32 more inches of snow overnight and he’ll be there until June with Yohe.

  164. Dom says:

    Where did he go?

  165. Dom says:

What do you mean by that?

  166. Jandy says:

There you go again, Dom, being cute :*

  167. Jandy says:

    On Sabattical leave

  168. Jandy says:

  169. Dom says:

Not trying to be funny. I don’t know he meant by dk’s favorite sign in si.

  170. The Pirates Charities sign. DK hates it and says it spoils the beauty of the skyline.

  171. Dom says:

But at least it’s for a good cause.

  172. True, but he feels it can be for a good cause somewhere else.

  173. Dom says:

Well, I guess it’s up to me to get some conversation going…

What was the best news of the week?

    Paul Martin practicing.
    Buccos starting off 2-1.
    Pens clinching the division.
    Steelers signing Heyward-Bey.
    Dark chocolate may prevent obesity.

  174. Damon says:

Pens game last night was a step in the right direction I think. Not a solid game, but the effort was better and the teamwork more sound. The next 4 games will be a good test to see if they are still headed in the right direction.

Bennett looked good on the top line. They were just missing on several chances, so lets hope over the next 5 games they get it down because that line could be a killer. That with the Malkin line back would be a nice 1-2 punch. The 3-4 punch….well….

I knew Martin was an important player on the Pens D corps, but who knew how much of a steadying influence he’d have. Also nice to see better breakouts from the D zone. Now just think if Letang came back soon…

Looking like the Pens will play Detroit, Toronto, Columbus or Philadelphia. Probably Detroit – who would give the Pens a nice test in the first round if they get all their players healthy by then.

  175. Jandy says:

    Dark chocolate may prevent obesity!

I LOVE chocolate, especially dark chocolate :)

And you’re still cute, Dom :)

  176. Damon says:

    Martin playing was huge.
Buccos had to take at least 2 of 3 from the Cubs who are a bad team.
Pens clinching the division was inevitable
    Heward-Bey – decent signing.
    Dark chocolate – winner….

  177. Jim S. says:

Dang, I grappled on that 2nd “n” decision, plan. Went with my gut.

  178. Jandy says:

    did it hurt????

  179. Jim S. says:

It doesn’t prevent obesity at the rate I’ve been known to eat it.

  180. Nate83 says:

Bey is this decades version of the 3 or 4 track athletes that became wide receivers back in the 80’s. He doesn’t do much well besides run in a straight line really fast. Luckily that may be all the Steelers need him to do. He may not even need to make a catch to have an effect on the game. With Brown and Lance Moore working underneath they only need somebody the defense needs to account for to run deep. They had no player on their team last year that could do that. Bey does it well. He is kind of a poor man’s Mike Wallace. I’m OK with the move. It seems to be low risk.

  181. I like that. Poor man’s Mike Wallace. Well put, Nate.

  182. bpn8pitt says:

It is what it is. Once you look at both Bey and Blount, they have a tendancy to put piggy on the ground. Coach Tomlin “obviously” wont like that.

But I do like that they may be able to turn the big play occasionally. One of the things the offense lacked last year, like you mentioned with Wallace.

  183. Jandy says:

OMG that is a WONDERFUL picture, Groat!!!!!

  184. Jandy says:

    OK so no chat…bummer

Trib Total Media: Our apologies, folks. Dejan’s having some flight issues out of Winnipeg this morning, and his adjusted schedule is going to put him out of touch for a while. So we’re going to shut this chat down and regroup for next week. You can still catch Dejan on his Twitter feed at @DejanKovacevic. Please join us again next week.

  185. Damon says:

Also at $750k, can’t hurt to take a look and see if you can work on his hands (Bey).

  186. 21sthebest says:

You seem disappointed Jandy. I’ll play Dejan. Go ahead and ask me anything you want.

  187. Dom says:

DK, when you interviewed Bob Nutting what type of sense of humor did he have and how expansive was the suit that he was wearing?

  188. Baywatch says:

Morning, Y’all! Once the minor league season starts, I have bookmarked a good number of former Pirates-Pirates farmhands, and monitor how they’re doing with their respective clubs. Noteworthy from last night: Rudy Owens, who along with Robbie Grossman left us in the Wandy trade, got CLOBBERED in his Oklahoma City’s opener last night, giving 5 runs in 4 innings. Just three hits, but one a home run, and he walked a couple. Struck out 7 in 4 innings, though.

  189. 21sthebest says:

And there we go right out of the box. First question is about Bob Nutting. 94 wins, 2-1 unsustainable start, and all people want to talk about is Bob Nutting.

Anywho, Bob is funnier than I am and I’m pretty sure he was wearing the same suit he wears everytime I interview him. Seersucker.

  190. Damon says:

Why has the Pirates’ every-day 1B not started a game yet?

  191. DK, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, where do you rank the Peg in comparison to the Burgh and how do you rate their Starbucks. Please use the Richter scale for comparison. Thanks and enjoy your layover in Minnesota.

  192. Can you teach hands?

  193. 21sthebest says:

    And because Daquido hates him.

  194. Sad for Owens. He was within a gnat’s eyelash of being called up right before we traded him. Has somewhat stunk ever since. Grossman and Presley are starting for the 2-1 Stros.

  195. Damon says:

    (Nice….very Dejan-esque!)

  196. 21sthebest says:

Thanks for your questions Lucky. First of all, I’m not getting laid in Minnesota.

As you all know, Winnipeg changed my life as documented here. But I can’t give it a 10 like I do Pittsburgh. Let’s go with a 9 66/87.

But the Starbucks coffee here tastes a bit nutty.

  197. I wanna know why you ignored my question and answered one from somebody named “guest” who has never been on the blog and never brown-nosed you on Twitter.

  198. Dom says:

He wears the same suit every day? I didn’t realize he is a cartoon character?

  199. ROFL

You are as quick on your feet as DK.

  200. Thundercrack says:

The link is an excellent touch.

  201. Jandy has to be enjoying this. And you don’t even have to bounce back and forth.

  202. 21sthebest says:

Dude, I’ve traveled to 86 countries in the last 3 days. Haven’t seen my wife since a couple of years before my kids were born. Give me a break.

  203. Jandy says:

    That’s asking for trouble, 21 ;)

  204. AL says:

Nice article today by Josh on Eric Tangradi (you know, DK’s favorite topic to talk about).
Too bad he’s gone……I think compared to what we have now, he would make a great 3rd-4th line winger.

  205. 21sthebest says:

  206. Jandy says:

    LOL priceless!!!

  207. Jandy says:

    make me :P

  208. Jandy says:

I read that, AL. Tangradi will never amount to a whole lot. He’s better than some of the 3rd and 4th liners we have now…but he was expected to be a power forward. If he proves me wrong, I’ll happily eat my hat :)

  209. 21sthebest says:

Dom, you need to wake up and smell the StarYucks.

  210. Brandon says:

    2 questions –
    1. Why to the Pens continue to play Scuds instead of Depres?
    2. When will the Pirates bench Grilli and address the bullpen issues like Detroit has?

  211. Jandy says:

My question is: When are you coming to Altoona? The Curve is a Pirate’s affiliate. It’s not been graced with your presence yet.

  212. Jandy says:

I think Dom is cute when he does this :)

  213. Dom says:

Dejan, I can’t for the life of me figure out if I’m supposed to place my question in the chat box or in the comments section below. How would one go about solving this enigma???

  214. AL says:

eat a hat??? you sound like a, a,……a lunatic!

  215. NMR says:

Dejan, while interviewing Bobby, are you A) mezmorized B) Aroused or C) Intimidated by his omnipresent visible chest hair?

  216. Jandy says:

Hey, I resemble that remark :D

  217. Jandy says:

    Oh My!!!!!!!!!!

  218. NMR says:

Owens was one of the Altoona Three or something like that, correct? Owens, Locke, Morris?

  219. 21sthebest says:

Brandon, the kid needs to play. Pure and simple.

And you can say you heard it here first, but they’re teaching Grilli to bunt.

  220. NMR says:

    Cool idea, Bay!

  221. Correct and his upside was supposed to be higher than Locke’s, too.

  222. Brandon says:

  223. 21sthebest says:

“When are you coming to Altoona?”

Nearest Starbucks is in State College or Johnstown!

  224. And you don’t even wear a hat.

  225. 21sthebest says:

    Ask Jandy Dom.

  226. Jandy says:

Not true, friend. There’s a Starbucks’ at the Noble’s Bookstore, which is within walking distance of the ballfield. GET YOUR DERIERRE TO ALTOONA!!!

  227. Jandy says:

Dom, if you can’t put your questions in the correct box, then you don’t deserve the gratification of an answer!

  228. 21sthebest says:

    I hate books.

  229. Damon says:

Predictions on the Pittsburgh Power game tonight?

  230. Jandy says:

Sometimes you do better than the curve, sometimes the Curve does better than you!

  231. 21sthebest says:

  232. Jandy says:

sshhhhh SPunky, that’s my out ;)

  233. Jandy says:

There will be no Power Outage

  234. 21sthebest says:

I predict that Trib Total Media’s investment in the Pittsburgh Power won’t appreciate after tonight’s game.

  235. Jandy says:

    hahaha, classic Dejan!

  236. 21sthebest says:

    Might be fun trying.

  237. Brandon says:

Dejan – Given all the issues facing the RiverHounds, what is the over/under on the # of locals who are over the age of 25 that will care about minor league soccer?

  238. Jandy says:

    I can guarantee it ;)

  239. Andrew says:

Altoona four: Rudy Owens, Justin Wilson, Bryan Morris and Jeff Locke, there is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

  240. 21sthebest says:

Brandon, I believe that JAL is over the age of 25.

  241. Jandy says:

  242. NMR says:

Off topic, but what the heck is a Daquido Bannini or whatever anyways?

    Always wondered.

  243. Brandon says:

So the answer is 1 – perfect!

  244. Jandy says:

    I’m LOL here!

  245. Thundercrack says:

Ha! It looks like a soccer question broke our Fake DK Chat.

My money was on the Power question.

  246. Jandy says:

    very much so ;)

  247. Jandy says:

  248. JohninOshkosh says:

Is it time for the Tampa Bay Lighting/Hartford Whalers/Montreal Expos/Whatever retro swag hippsters wear round ?

  249. Damon says:

Is it Tampa Bay Lightning round yet?

  250. Damon says:

Ha! Dejan is doing a Lightning round chat on Twitter…

  251. Brandon says:

Tampa Bay Lightning Round…….. Will the Steelers bring in Chris Johnson for a fake look like they did with Jones-Drew to continue to distract the fans from all of the cast off signings that will not improve the team vs. the division competition (Heyward-Bey, worst CB in all of the NFL, etc.)?

  252. bpn8pitt says:

True. Also at 750k you can get cut in training camp if some kid outperforms you. He is a draft bust.

  253. Damon says:

Will the Pirates almost-sign Morales June 1st?

  254. One of the best chats in a long time, DK. Eliminated all the arse-kissing questions and gave good, pointed answers. Kudos.

And now we know, too, DK and 21 are the same person.

  255. Nate83 says:

I honestly don’t think you can Lucky. I was a wide receiver and it sounds silly but I think it’s something you are born with. You would think catching a ball is something anyone can do better with repetition but it seems like it’s either something you can do or can’t do well. There is definitely techniques that can be coached to improve your chances of catching the ball but there is still instinct involved that can’t be taught.

It amazing how many NFL wide receivers have horrible hand placement and do not locate the ball correctly on deep throws. Hines Ward and Anquin Boldin are two of the best I have seen as far as text book technique for catching balls. Boldin has extremely strong hands. Both guys have had amazing careers despite not being as physically gifted as others playing the position.

  256. JohninOshkosh says:

Dejan likes his Twitter buddies better than his loyal blog followers. Hardly comes around here anymore. Doesn’t even put up a Morning Java anymore! :)

  257. Jandy says:

    He’s mean and hateful!

  258. Brandon says:

The Pirates are plotting to have offered Morales a contract which is the same $ amount that he accepts from whichever team signs him 1st – it will come out that his request for the terms offered were “just not quite right”, but their TV contract will be reevaluated to be in the Top 5 by Mr. C so that won’t have been the reason Morales wasn’t signed.

  259. Can’t compare to this one.

  260. Jandy says:

And where the heck is Biz? We got three new Loonies this morning to report!

  261. DK: No, he wears his hair too long. It will detract from Polamolu’s commercials.

  262. 21sthebest says:

Brandon, I took your question to Kevin Colbert who informed me that he has now extended the period in which he will not answer questions to include the offseason.

  263. Still asleep. Recovering from the 16-inning game the other night.

  264. Baywatch says:

Rudy was out all last year with a surgery. Guess I’m encouraged a bit by his 7Ks. I didn’t know Presley was with the ‘Stros now.

  265. Jandy says:

  266. Wild Bill says:

So, from fake DK or the rest of yinz, how many do the Bucs take from the Cards this weekend?

  267. Brandon says:

Great answer DK – Or he could only answer questions to those who attend the RiverHounds games……silence. Just another opportunity for you to opine regarding Nuttings access vs. the Steeler/Penguin brass – gosh , he is mesmerizing!

  268. Baywatch says:

I enjoy it, N. I figure these boys were LIKE family in a way. I stay in touch via Twitter with words of encouragement where I can.

  269. Baywatch says:

I think we got Wainright Sunday. 2 of 3, GOOD GUYS!

  270. Brandon says:

Pitching matchups favor the Cards – best chance for Bucs is tonite with Cole, the other two will take extreme overachievement from the bullpen and the offense will need to hit over .200 with Alverez actually getting a hit with runners in scoring position….1 of 3 is my bet.

  271. Nate83 says:

Yikes I just looked at that link you posted. It’s not the drops that scare me. It’s the receptions to target ratio. It is absolutely horrible. I know the Raiders haven’t had the best QB’s and I know he has more deep throws then a typical receiver which has a lower completion percentage but some of those numbers are really bad. It tells me he more then likely isn’t getting much separation from defenders or attacking the ball which leads to a lot of passes defensed.

  272. NMR says:

Matchups favor the Cards because their pitchers are better? Or because the Bucs offense is worse?

I’ll take Cole and Liriano over Miller and Kelly seven days a week.

  273. Nate83 says:

Your giving them the advantage in Liriano vs. Kelly? Maybe a slight edge but I personally consider it a toss up.

Obviously Volquez has the advantage over Wainwright? They have equal ERA and K/9 stats this year but Volquez has the better WHIP :)

  274. NMR says:

Ah thats it. I was trying to figure out where Wilson fit in there.

  275. 21sthebest says:

    NMR, he’s a book critic.

  276. NMR says:

What does Sawchik always say? Know your own prospects better than other teams?

    Well done, NH.

  277. Brandon says:

My thought on Liriano vs. Kelly is that our bullpen will need to pitch 3+ innings and Kelly has been effective against us in the past – if Liriano can keep his pitch count down and the Pirates bats wake up a little, that game could be a winner. The 3rd game doesn’t look good on paper, but Volquez may surprise everyone and pitch 5 good innings – either way, the last two games are likely to require the BP to pitch very well.

  278. Dom says:

The Titans release Chris Johnson which proves that Rashard Mendenhall was the right pick after all.

  279. NMR says:

    Thanks Brandon. Good explanation.

  280. Dom says:

That fan probably had it coming.

  281. bpn8pitt says:

When a guy is only 27, making the minimum there is a reason for it.

Im pretty sure they are going to get a WR/TE in the draft. When, is the question. Id like one of the early CB’s personally.

Some of the small school WRs they could get late are intriguing. Supposed to be one of the deepest WR pools in awhile. But then again, they take some time to develop. And some never do.

  282. Baywatch says:

    And TWICE on Sunday!

  283. Jandy says:

    Now Dom.

  284. NMR says:

Hahaha, wow, amazing find. I guess that is his actual name? I like it.

  285. NMR says:

I’m honestly surprised MLB doesn’t suspend or at least fine Adams.

Yeah, it was harmless. But that is a line you DO NOT cross. Doesn’t matter what sport we’re talking about.

I can guarantee that if the fan pushed Adams he’d be ejected in a second.

  286. Andrew says:

My two cent, Joe Kelly = Jeff Locke, the guy is not that good, he has a sinker and pedestrian breaking stuff, I am surprised that both Marteniz and Rosenthal stayed in the pen for the Cardinals, but I’ll assume they know what they are doing until proven otherwise.

I think pitching match ups are in the Pirates favor in 2 out of 3, but Cardinals lineup > Pirates lineup, question is by how much.

  287. Jandy says:

NMR I tend to agree with you, even while I was being facetious with my post.

I don’t think it’s cool to push a fan like that.

  288. Jandy says:

and who gets the most good luck ;)

  289. Andrew says:

He moonlights as a world class interweb troll, I read Pirates’ blogs to the point that it is harmful to my productivity, but I see that name a lot.

  290. Nate83 says:

I agree with that draft strategy. That is exactly the direction I want them to go. CB first round unless there is a WR that drops and they just can’t pass on. There are really good receivers that will drop to the second and third round. I’ve heard some scouts say some receivers that usually would be first rounders will drop to the third.

  291. Andrew says:

Depending on how this season plans out that actually might be an above average haul for a prospect laden AA rotation.

  292. Andrew says:

Be careful now, luck is the third rail in sports discussions.

  293. 21sthebest says:

I wonder if he read the book.

  294. Nate83 says:

That is the million dollar question? Maybe closer to 10 million if they decide to pick up Kendry because the gap is larger then I think. I’m not sold on the Cards offense being good enough to offset the inevitable RISP regression they will have this year. I do think it is better then the Pirates offense but I don’t think the gap is as large as it is perceived. I know they added Peralta and Bourjos but Bourjos isn’t a slam dunk offensively and they lost Beltran, have an aging Holliday and Carpenters ++offense at second isn’t as impressive at third.

  295. Bizrow says:

    Here I am ;-)

  296. NMR says:

“luck” : sabermetrists :: “gut feeling” : traditionalists

  297. NMR says:

I literally stopped posting on Smizik’s Blog when it went to Facebook because I was worried he’d stalk me and my family.

  298. 21sthebest says:

Ditto NMR, except there were a couple of those types as far as I’m concerned.

  299. Bizrow says:

    Welcome Antis Towhship and Russellville.

    That makes 459

  300. Nate83 says:

One thing is for sure he was the cheaper pick. I wonder what he cost against their cap. Him, MJD and Turner are proof that it is dangerous to sign any RB long term for a lot of money. The regression happens so fast and you just don’t know when it will happen. The human body isn’t meant to have collisions like that 20-25 times a game. Really makes you respect what the Bus did for so long. It’s going to be a tough market for Running backs in the NFL going forward, especially with more passing.

  301. JohninOshkosh says:

Just to illustrate how whacky the MLB HOF is-I’m watching the Cubs home opener at Wrigley where Banks, Williams and Jenkins are throwing out the first pitch. The Cubs late sixties, early seventies team has 4 Hall of Famers on it.

    Never won a division.

The Pirates late sixties, early seventies teams went to three NLCS and won a world championship in 1971. Three Hall of Famers.

    Strange organization the HOF is.

  302. Bizrow says:

Anything going on with Vin Marzanno (sp) trade wise?

  303. Jandy says:

Cheswick, PA is already on then?

  304. Jandy says:

    Hi Biz!!!!

  305. Jandy says:

    This one, too, Biz:

    April 4, 2014 at 6:08 AM

    New Jersey, Oceanville

    Lets go Bucs!!!!!

  306. Wild Bill says:

I’m watching Phils at Cubs home opener. Fans bundled like it is February. Good for beer sales, bad for sodas and ice cream.

The ivy looks like crap. A Pirates Charities sign would be an improvement.

  307. Bizrow says:

    Yes, put it on yesterday

    Now at 460

  308. Wild Bill says:

John, just saw your post. Should have added to your post.

  309. Bizrow says:

Cubs don’t need help with beer sales ;-)

  310. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hey Bill!

  311. bpn8pitt says:

Yeah, I agree with that Nate.

I know they said this class didnt have much HB wise, but it wouldnt surprise me if somebody goes in the 3rd or 4th and still turns into a decent weapon..

I think Trent Richardson will be the last of the top 5 backs ever drafted, unless a guys truly is special, which is hard to fathom if college stays with the spread. Probably a stupid pick by the Browns to begin with but they did recoup some of it getting Indy’s pick.

  312. Wild Bill says:

Haven’t heard a thing, but we should soon.

  313. Wild Bill says:

Still got a tiny interest in the Final Four, john?

  314. NMR says:

Oh yeah, he was not at the top of the list by any means.

  315. JohninOshkosh says:

I wonder which park consumes the most beer per capita.

Based on the 4 parks I’ve been to on a regular or close to regular basis:

    1. Miller Park
    2. Wrigley Field
    3. Target Field

  316. JohninOshkosh says:

Just a little. Like a kid at Christmas! Been a fun week.

  317. Wild Bill says:

I’m pulling for the Badgers, gotta support the B1G.

  318. Bizrow says:

I’ve been to Wrigley once. Two beer vendors were working together, one sold and the other delivered for sale, by the time one fellow got back with a new case, the seller was out of brew ;-)

  319. theplanisworking says:

Which topic will we hear about first ……….

    Mazzarro trade possibility,
    Taiilon arm update.

  320. Jandy says:

maybe both at the same time?

  321. bpn8pitt says:

Miller’s #1, agree. I thought the food was excellent too.

    Fried Cheese Curds, Osh. ++++

  322. bpn8pitt says:

Well, Im blaming the Seal Training with Taillon.

    I kid, NMR. ;)

  323. JohninOshkosh says:

I never read Smizik’s blog. And, I don’t look at any other sports blog other than this one and Bucco Blog. Followed but never posted on Dejan’s old and old old and old old old blog at P-G. So, I recognize a lot of guys from the old days. But, who came over here after the facebook thing at the P-G ? I always heard Smizi’s blog was highly antagonistic so I avoided it because I hate “you suck” and “so and so sucks” posts.

  324. Nate83 says:

You had me at Fried Cheese. I’m not sure the word Curds made it more appetizing.

  325. theplanisworking says:

5 days until Mazzarro is lost to waivers.
I think we hear about that first.

We might not hear about Taillon until Memorial Day……….. in Winnipeg
    (2 n’s, Jim). :D (no gut required) ……..

  326. JohninOshkosh says:

Wisconsin’s greatest gift to civilization, my friend. I only eat them twice a year, though. At the county and state fair. With plenty of beer.

  327. Dom says:

If he’s gone in five days then what can we really expect for him?

    I’d expect a single A reliever.

  328. JohninOshkosh says:

My rankings are only ranking the parks I go to. I haven’t been too many of them nationwide. I’m assuming, for example, that Phillies fans throw back a few. And Dodger fans are too busy on cellphones to drink.

  329. Bizrow says:

So I’m going back to work, two days a week. Worst case is if I get sick of what I’m doing, I’ll re-retire ;-)

  330. JohninOshkosh says:

Good man. I do that, as well. Even would like to see the Gophers win the Frozen Four.

  331. 21sthebest says:

Well that should cover your beer money?

  332. NMR says:

Have you ever spent time in Canada?

Sounds like you’d be all over a good bowl of poutine.

  333. 21sthebest says:

To go with their NIT Championship!

  334. NMR says:

No way, dude. Don’t you remember?

Taillon’s agent got him OUT of Seal drills. Clearly the reason his his UCL was not mentally tough enough to resist tearing.

  335. JohninOshkosh says:

I had poutine several time on my honeymoon in Montreal. Big fan.

I think beer drinking cultures like Canada and Wisconsin know how to create comfort food that goes with beer.

And, probably why Losartan sales go through the roof in both places, no doubt.

  336. Bizrow says:

Somebody does something stupid or make a mistake, they write a thing called a Condition Report. Lets say Marte tries to bunt with two strikes, a CR is written, and then I will have to figure out why he did it and try to take an action so he doesn’t do it again. Depending on the severity, the investigation can take 5 minutes to a month with a team put together.

Yeah, 21, I was thinking more of getting some $$ to pay for 2015 season tickets :-)

  337. Bizrow says:

One reason why I retired when I did was sometimes its not much fun. Once in a great while though, you actually find something that you can fix

  338. NMR says:

I’m sure there are others, but I specifically remember myself, AW, 21, Daq, plan, and BFD (only on Nutting and payroll column days, of course).

I can’t even put a finger on it exactly, but Smiz always had his hands full. I give the guy a ton of credit for coming out of retirement only to spend most of his time babysitting.

  339. Bizrow says:

There are reports out there that the Mutts have had enough of Ike Davis and he’s getting benched for good.

  340. NMR says:

Honeymoon in Montreal? That’s the coolest idea I’ve ever heard (no pun).

  341. 21sthebest says:

He wasn’t a very good babysitter if you ask me. Dejan pretty much leaves us alone and this place is a convent compared to the Smizeblog.

  342. bpn8pitt says:

Im kinda on the fence about trading Mazzaro. Goes back to that good discussion I read the other day about keeping two guys that can only play 1B.

“Cheaper to keep her” comes to mind. Like you said, the return wont be much.

  343. 21sthebest says:

I’ve been to Dodger Stadium. Sat behind Jerry Seinfeld. It was by far the most low key crowd I’ve ever been to in a ballpark but that’s not surprising. I also thought Dodger Stadium was fantastic. Very underrated. Felt like I was sitting on the field.

  344. NMR says:

Mets could not have possibly butchered that situation any more than they already have.

Reports had them with a solid offer of outfielder Matt Joyce from the Rays this winter. Instead, they rostered two left handed 1B and spent $67m on Curtis Granderson and Chris Young.

Nobody in their right mind would take Davis at this point.

  345. bpn8pitt says:

You gotta go to Miller Park, Nate. Blonde women, the beer, tailgating like a football game…Its too bad the Buccos usually get stomped there…Tix arent cheap either.

Hoping that began to change with 2013.

  346. NMR says:

    Mazarro’s at-bats weren’t “professional” enough for Hurdle.

  347. cmat0829 says:

Real story is the fan ate the $25 corndog that Adams had stashed away for between inning eats… so yeah, he definitely had it coming.

Cards in town tonight…. time for all the Matt Adams is fat puns, and Matt Holliday is a butcher in the outfield posts….can’t wait!!

  348. NMR says:

I do think there’s something to be said for that, 21.

I have to imagine Smiz was a bit out of his element when it came to the blog medium. I can’t think of any “old school” baseball guy that is more willing to accept fresh ideas, but internet monitoring was probably something he never imagined having to do.

I admittedly have a soft spot for him, as if you couldn’t tell.

  349. NMR says:

BTW, didn’t I tell you all Volquez needed was Martin catching him? ;)

  350. cmat0829 says:

I too am rooting for Wisconsin (and UConn for what it’s worth), but never understood the ‘root for the conference’ sentiment. I know I’m in the minority, but how can you be bitter rivals with someone and then root for them to win ?

  351. cmat0829 says:

Trading Mazarro is not a ‘choice’. Once he was DFA’d, the Pirates either need to trade him or put him through waivers (or if they are lucky and they won’t be, he can go unclaimed and they can assign him to AAA).

  352. Bizrow says:

Yeah, I don’t want Davis but the Mets bullpen is a mess

  353. So back to the plant but just 2 days a week?

  354. Nate83 says:

Why not? His career batting average close to Smoak’s probably even better, he had over 30 HR’s in a year and has a high walk rate. I don’t know if you heard but Smoak has 7 RBI in 3 games. Davis should be worth at least 8 RBI.

Of course there is the little concern that his at bats have not been “”professional””. Double quotes because it’s me quoting you quoting me :)

  355. Bizrow says:

I just read the chat that was held here today, I’m crying, hilarious, bravo lunatics

  356. Thundercrack says:

I would be surprised if that offer of Joyce for Ike Davis is really true.

( But I think this is Joyce’s walk year)

  357. NMR says:

You are right about that, Biz. Really is a shame.

  358. Bizrow says:

Thats what they are saying right now. But you never know. The thing is, if I had said no, it might have closed the door forever, know what I mean?

And if its 16 hours, I may work it over three days, it should be pretty flexible.

It will be nice to see the folks there

  359. NMR says:

Sure it was, CMAT. Nobody forced the team to DFA him.

  360. NMR says:

I’d take Davis for Mazarro, fwiw, and give him Ishikawa’s at-bats.

  361. Nate83 says:

If that would have happened maybe they wouldn’t have signed Loney and we would have him on our team and everyone except the Rays would be happy. Six degrees of separation baseball version.

  362. 21 was at his best.

Spot on with those DK replies. DK should be proud.

  363. JohninOshkosh says:

Yeah. It was really good stuff. Nice job by 21!

Good stuff for a Friday. Oh, today is Friday, Biz!

  364. Nate83 says:

A friend of mine just went there and stayed at the Pabst Blue Ribbon hotel (link below) and said it was awesome.

  365. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m with you, Nate. I agree with NMR as well. Would trade Vin for Ike (sound like goons in an organized crime syndicate).

Maybe Ike wouldn’t party as much in Pittsburgh.

  366. cmat0829 says:

I guess my response is to a post TODAY, not a week ago, that said “I am on the fence about trading Mazarro”… I know they had a choice who to keep on the roster and who not to.

I am of the camp that thinks saving an extra bullpen arm, going with 13 pitchers, is really not an option, so they were going to have to DFA someone in the ‘pen.

  367. Brandon says:

21 – I lived in so. cal for 8 years….I agree that Dodger’s stadium was fantastic – very underated!

    Loved the Dodger dogs too.

  368. Thundercrack says:

All he needed was the bold type.

  369. NMR says:

I’ve thought the same thing, Nate.

  370. NMR says:

Typically I would completely agree with you.

A team almost has to TRY to come up with a less valuable way to take up one of the 25 roster spots than a 13th reliever. Unfortunately, the Pirates succeeded in doing that.

  371. Wild Bill says:

Sure you can, cmat. Mutual competition leading to mutual respect.

  372. cmat0829 says:

Fair enough. I like Vin a lot, but the options system was created to give guys like him a chance to pitch in the majors rather than be stuck in AAA depth mode… so when he goes elsewhere, I’ll be rooting for him to succeed.

As to the bench, I agree that right now it is a weakness, most notably Harrison’s spot. Keeping Barmes for his glove and the back-up catcher spot (though I really like Tony’s offensive approach overall) means the other 3 guys have to be threats to deliver. No issue with the two platoon situations, but the 3rd spot can’t be gobbled up with someone who isn’t quite a glove man and who isn’t really an offensive threat. And isn’t fast enough to steal a base. And isn’t disciplined enough to draw a walk. Not to say JayHey hasn’t had his moments. he’s a likeable guy… tries hard….

I’ll say it again but I will definitely criticize Mr Huntington for not getting someone like Bonifacio…especially with so many question marks (can Neil Walker hit LHPs; can Mercer hack it as everyday SS; does Pedro need a spell vs. LHPs), he’d be so valuable to play all over the diamond for this team. The kind of player Leyland used to love, get him 3 starts a week or so in various spots, becomes a semi-starter.

  373. Good post.

Maybe Tony can learn first base.

  374. Bizrow says:

Thanks, that means tomorrow I get to go to a ballgame ;-)

  375. NMR says:

Thanks for the well-thought response, cmat.

I’ll differ with you on Harrison and the 1B platoon, though. Josh can play anywhere on the field, runs well, and makes decent contact. I fine with him in a classic utility role, although I completely agree that I would’ve liked to see him upgraded over the winter.

However, I see absolutely no reason to keep Ishikawa. The only reason he has a roster spot is the side of the plate he stands on. The chances of a 30 yo who hasn’t played in the big leagues in two years suddenly becoming something is almost zero. He’s not a better fielder than Gaby, he does not have more power than Gaby, and makes less contact than Gaby…even against RHP.

I gave Hurdle the benefit of the doubt figuring that he must have identified some major change in his game, but that has since been proven to be false. Couple decent weeks of spring training. That’s it.

That being said, there isn’t a player on the roster I’ve been personally pulling for in each at-bat more than him. Would make for an incredible, almost impossible success story.

  376. NMR says:

    But Emilio Bonifacio stinks.

You won’t here his name more than a half dozen times after April.

  377. NMR says:

Not the craziest idea at all considering how many catchers go back and forth these days.

I’d like to see NH copy Billy Beane’s catcher platoon situation next year.
