  1. kr70 says:

Just got my new Sports Illustrated and there on page 11 in all it’s glory DK’s favorite PIRATES CHARITIES sign. Ha! bring on the cardinals!!

  2. cmat0829 says:

Wow, TRIP-TRIP-TRIPLE coverage by the TRIB (or should it be renamed the TRIP-Review now) on location on the North Side tonight….

  3. JohninOshkosh says:

Incredible. It’s like when (dated reference alert!) Phil Collins played Live Aid in London and USA on same day.

  4. cmat0829 says:

Let’s play “WEEKEND OVER/UNDER”…. what do ya think:

GAMES PLAYED: Over/Under 2.5 Will the raindrops stay away and let the rivalry series be played in full
PIRATES WINS: Over/Under 1.5 Can the Bucs get an important series W at home vs. the Cards
BUCCO BLASTS: Over/Under 2.5 Can the offense get going and put some over the wall? HRs are key STRIKEOUTS P/O Who K’s more? Pirates Pitchers (K’ing Cards) or Pirates Offense
HBP Over/Under 4.5 Will the total players hit by pitch be brawl- or snooze-worthy
CUTCH RBIs Over/Under 2.5 Will Cutch be clutch and plate some runs this series for the Bucs?

  5. Baywatch says:

What’s the weather like up there now? Any heavy rain yet?

  6. Nate83 says:

I think I finally got an avatar. Hopefully it shows up. I got it just for DK.

  7. NMR says:

Been dry downtown for a few hours, but the wind is really picking up.

  8. NMR says:

Gonna be a great matchup, but you couldn’t pay me to sit in that stadium right now.

  9. And DK will love it, too, Nate.

  10. JohninOshkosh says:

    ++++ Nate

  11. cmat0829 says:

According to, the forecast is for ‘showers early’ tonight but general clearing after that. Not that weather forecasts have ever been wrong…. kind of like player evaluation forecasts…

Only thing better would have been a shot of that awful sign blocking the downtown view………… one of DK’s favorite topics.

  14. theplanisworking says:

Just looked at’s map forecast for the stadium area, and a huge t-storm is supposed to pass by around 8:00.

Hopefully it will come sooner, and then they can play ball.

  15. Brandie says:

    Here’s hoping Plante Bichette!

  16. theplanisworking says:

Hey, hey! It’s the nickname HOF!

Hoping for a game tonight, Brandimal.
Gonna hop on the Cole Train …. minus Don Cornelius.

  17. I like that, Plante Bichette. She’s dating herself. Bichette’s kid is playing now.

Actually a hell of a comparison!

  34. Barb says:

  35. Barb says:

If you throw in Luther I’ll be a happy girl.

  36. NMR says:

I cannot wait to never hear another word about David Ortiz again.

Guy is turning into a joke.

  37. Wild Bill says:

Bonifacio went 0 for 3 today against the Phillies. Wonder what the Phils knew that we didn’t?

  38. Wild Bill says:

    Over on all of them!

  39. NMR says:

Remember a couple years back when Chris Shelton hit like nine homeruns in the first week?

  40. Brandie says:

  41. Brandie says:

I think he was okay when he was more David Ortiz and less Big Papi!

  42. Brandie says:

Production like his is unsustainable. He was bound to have a dry spell Bill Cosby.

  43. Brandie says:

I have given you that many in the year since I started posting and I am not through yet.

  44. Andrew says:

Some good discussions over on the makeshift blog today, didn’t know about the speculative Davis/Joyce trade, also good assessment of the PG’s blog.

I saw the lineup for tonight, Snider in the two hole and Ishikawa 7th. Is it possible that these two are getting ABs because the Pirates want to better assess their assets? I think it is a safe assumption that the Pirates know what kind of production they are going to get from Tabata and Gaby Sanchez. However is it plausible that the front office wants to better establish if Snider can be a passable regular and just how bad Ishikawa would be as the large half of the platoon?

Possibly, gain some more information and then assess if a trade is necessary and if Tabata can be a piece, because otherwise I see little reason given Ishikawa’s and Snider’s track record and age that they should be starting. Anyway that is my working theory, subject to revision.

  45. Barb says:

    How to pitch to him?!?!?!?!?!

  46. cmat0829 says:

or i should say like blog opinions :)

  47. theplanisworking says:

    David Ortiz ………
skinny and horrible with the Twins,
massive and a force with the Sox.

All done naturally, of course (wink, wink) …….

  48. cmat0829 says:

It is pretty clear they know what they have in Tabata and want to give Snider a healthy shot to prove himself at this level. As to Ishikawa, I think this resoundingly answers the question as to what Clint really thinks of Gaby’s ability to hit vs RHPs. I was shocked that yesterday in the day game following the marathon 16-inning game that Gaby (and even Tabby) weren’t starting…..

Another proof point for ‘it’s not what they say, it’s who they play’…..

  49. theplanisworking says:

Then the entire organization was asleep in ST.
Why would they do this in games that count? When every win is important? When playing these two regularly (at first) could mean the difference between success and failure when it really counts at the end of the year?

I can’t see why these 2 are being given the AB’s. If you want to trade them, just do it. I am sure the other 29 clubs know what they are at this point of their careers.

I agree with your premise to an extent, Andrew, but man, that is a wrong way to do thing. Just my opinion.

  50. Steve Brandell (40-year old Brandi),

Aged Brandy is better, right? I don’t know because I don’t drink, but 40 is no problem. Neither is 50. But this 60 stuff is different in some ways.

    Like Buggee says, “Etch it”

  51. Yeah and some talking head asked him what it would be like coming to Pittsburgh for the All-Star game that season. He was in the minors before they played it.

  52. Brandie says:

Thanks my Revvie Ray of Son-shine!!!!

  53. 21sthebest says:

Tarp is on the field if anyone is heading over. Obviously waiting until this thin line of rain comes through. I wouldn’t think first pitch would be before 7:45.

  54. pattonbb says:

    Great reference.

  55. Milo Hamilton says:

Trust me on this one Brandikawa. In 10 years, 40 will sound really good ! :)

  56. Karen22 says:

Yeah, and in 20, it will sound like puberty.

  57. bpn8pitt says:

Anyway going to Cost to see Pitt/Virginia?

  58. Brandie says:

Temptress 22 with words of wisdom!

  59. Karen22 says:

Twitter photos right now show a double rainbow over PNC Park. Hope that’s a good omen!

  60. theplanisworking says:

Brandikawa, age is only a number.
After awhile, you just forget them.

If you are only as old as you feel, I am only 50 today.
    Tomorrow, maybe 90. ;)

  61. Karen22 says:

    And 22 sounds like a toddler! :)

  62. 21sthebest says:

    I got some nice pics!

  63. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Something strange about the amount of phantom rain delays the Pirates have in Pittsburgh in the course of the season.
I guess it doesn’t hurt concession sales.

  64. Carlos Danger says:

I just tried to find any update on taillon but couldn’t find anything. Has anyone heard anything? Or are they just waiting for another opinion? I always like to think “no news is good news” but elbow injuries concern me.

  65. They said different from the first opinion, Carlos, and they are all contemplating how to move forward.

  66. Thundercrack says:

I’m at the game. First one of the season for me.

The heavy rain that just fell was real…not phantom.

  67. Andrew says:

Don’t get me wrong I do not think it is the soundest strategy just trying to understand why they are running out Snider with .309 OBP vs RHP, with Tabata and a .340 OBP on the bench.

  68. Carlos Danger says:

Thank you sir! Really hoping it isn’t serious, but this is definitely concerning.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

    They’re scalpel shopping.

  70. theplanisworking says:

I am just disappointed that PNC doesn’t have corndogs, like Arizona’s ballpark.
They do have that $15 grilled cheese of death sandwich.

It’s the Northeast in early April. bad weather is expected.
But I do remember that MLB used to schedule games in warm weather/domed stadiums early in the year, but for some reason they went away from that. Probably made too much sense………..

  71. theplanisworking says:

I heard on a sports talk-show recently that they should just have every pitcher have TJ surgery for their 18th birthday, and just get it over with. I could not tell if they were being serious or joking.

  72. Carlos Danger says:

As much as I hate to say it, I am be going to agree with that notion…

  73. Carlos Danger says:

As much as I hate to say it, I am be going to agree with that notion…

  74. Since there’s a rain delay, there’s time to uplift John’s Badgers for tomorrow. Please beat UK for good old LNK.

  75. Carlos Danger says:

Beginning. Auto correct sometimes is my worst enemy…

  76. Carlos Danger says:

That is funny…if they were joking.

  77. Andrew says:

First batter homers off the Yankees multi-million dollar import, Tanaka.

  78. bpn8pitt says:

Look for something Sunday/Monday, Carlos. Prob on Huntington’s weekly show.

If im them, I do it Monday, when they are headed out on the road…That way if the news is bad, only a handful of the beat guys are asking questions instead of the entire Pittsburgh sports media.

  79. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s obvious that Taillon has a different agent than Chris Stewart or JRay would know something by now.

  80. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I don’t why everyone on Twitter at the game was wondering where the rain was….?

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

…and he promptly retires the next three batters on a groundout & 2 strikeouts. We could do this all year if you want.

  82. bpn8pitt says:

Never understood why any Japanese player would want to play in the AL East, being so far away from home, in those bandbox stadiums under the glare of places like NY and Boston.

NL West California teams anyday. Big Stadiums, laid back fanbases, large Asian community.

When Cashman downplayed him to a #3 you knew it was trouble. With the 5th largest contract ever for a pitcher. Flushing money down the toilet, IMO.

  83. theplanisworking says:

    Yes I did.
    $25 bucks!

Heart attack on a stick. :)

  84. theplanisworking says:

  85. Carlos Danger says:

That sounds like a very valid possibility – it would make sense. And also kinda confirms my suspicion that it is something serious. Why wait if it is positive news?

  86. Ironic that it was former juicer, former Yankee Milky Way Cabrera. Oh, the ironies of baseball.

  87. theplanisworking says:

But Milo, do we have to try the veal all year? ;)

  88. Andrew says:

Certainly trivial, I just found it humorous.

  89. cberry88 says:

    Thanks for adding Rick Sebak!

  90. Milo Hamilton says:

No, but you should tip your waitress.

  91. cberry88 says:

  92. Carlos Danger says:

I always figured the Dodgers would get him. Since they seem to have more money than Scrooge McDuck. Was it ever disclosed what they offered him? I just assume decision was almost completely financially based.

  93. theplanisworking says:

Every time someone says that, I think of cow-tipping.
And I have no idea why.

  94. bpn8pitt says:

I heard that the Yankees had liked him awhile, and thats why he got the astronomical offer. Im sure the Dodgers matched the posting fee.

He might end up being okay. But when a guy is just “okay” do you pay him like that?

I know he had a lot of innings already on his arm, and they dont pitch as frequently in the Japanese league so, thats probably a disaster waiting to happen.

Heck, Jeters been a disaster for a couple years now IMO.

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

Thought this was kinda funny considering their exploits last year, the Cardinals were 0 for their first 17 with runners in scoring position.

  96. bpn8pitt says:

    Heard they ran out too…

    Arizona looks bad already.

  97. theplanisworking says:

I would have never guessed that there would be such a demand for a $25 corndog.

  98. theplanisworking says:

In the strange department …. Travis Snider starts.
In the stranger department … he is batting second.
In the strangest department .. Clint seems fine with this.

  99. Carlos Danger says:

I am pulling for snider and have been telling my dad and brother he is going to have an awesome year. I realize it is early but man he is making me look bad so far. I realize the broken bat is bad luck but c’mon man. Seize this opportunity. You are just place holding for polanco (hopefully sooner rather than later). Would you rather see him or tabata traded since we will need to get rid of 1? Unless snider shows me something, anything, before we call up polonco, I am going to vote for tabata.

  100. Milo Hamilton says:

    Matt Adams should be suspended.

  101. Barb says:

Petey hits it a country mile! Yessiree!

  102. Carlos Danger says:

  103. bpn8pitt says:

One of my concerns is that Polanco ISNT ready for some reason, or gets hurt, like with Taillon.

    Then, what do you do?

We are starting to assume that the Pirates are going to be able to get by until June/July, call some guys up, make some moves and be okay. I hope they get there.

  104. Patrick(ri) says:

The Cards pitching is scary. I am less impressed with their batting order. Particularly, I think they will miss Beltran.

  105. JRay3 says:

And El Toro goes opposite field for his first HR of year. He has hit a couple of balls hard opposite field to start year, encouraging sign.

Just incredible power he possesses and the Bucs desperatley need that in middle of this lineup.

  106. Eric Bowser says:

Rumor has it, a meteor landed in Pittsburgh.

  107. JRay3 says:

Also nice to see Pedro pick right up where he left off from the NLDS…bashing Cards pitchers.

  108. JohninOshkosh says:

Hey. I’m out doing family stuff. Thanks a lot, Lucky. Appreciate it.

    On Wisconsin.

BTW, Ryan’s presser with his players today was or pretty good television.

  109. Eric Bowser says:

another quick inning for Cole…. love the pitching. He’s more than just a hard thrower.

    Nice popcorn catch kid…

  110. Carlos Danger says:

I am in complete agreement. They say polanco isn’t ready but I still thought (from my limited viewing of spring training games) he should be up here. Like most decisions, I feel it is completely financial even though they would never say that. I feel that their offseason moves (or lack thereof) were based on taillon and
Polanco being available, and if they aren’t it would seriously affect their season.

  111. Patrick(ri) says:

The cards have scary pitching, but I am not so impressed by their lineup. I see no Beltran replacement.

  112. bpn8pitt says:

I just wish there would be some ducks on the pond when he does that, though.

Could be the fatal flaw of this team, offensively.

  113. scapper says:

And knowing the Pirates, they’ll settle on the Volquez cutrate brand of scalpel.

  114. Eric Bowser says:

And I don’t get why they traded David Freese.

  115. Eric Bowser says:

    Almost a Marte Parte

  116. bpn8pitt says:

Oscar Taveras might be able to…And St Louis certainly has the assets to get a player too.

They always seem to know when to let a guy walk too. But I think for a year or so, Beltran will help the Yanks.

  117. scapper says:

Agreed. Still pays to be white in this country. A black or Hispanic player pulls that stunt and they nail him.

  118. Patrick(ri) says:

Defense? And the assumption Carpenter can repeat his great batting,

  119. Milo Hamilton says:

Peter Bourjos didn’t look a whole lot different than Jon Jay on that “triple”.

  120. JohninOshkosh says:

Best thing I saw today were the BoSox fans booing Braun.

Some of those Sawx World Series trophies are sitting on pillars partially made of steroids, methinks.

    Gotta love fans.

  121. theplanisworking says:

Oh, you mean Ortiz and Manny?

Manny we know did them, he got caught.
Ortiz never tested positive (really tired of that phrase), but he went from skinny and stinking with the Twins, to a massive player (literally), and a force with the Sox.

  122. Milo Hamilton says:

Marte’s sightseeing trip out of the batters box may have cost them a run.

  123. Arriba Wilver says:

Still has some learning to do.

  124. Eric Bowser says:

I don’t get the reputation for his defense, he’s been source of some bad plays that I’ve seen. Remember the comeback against Anaheim last year.

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

Trout wasn’t exactly Paul Blair out there in that series either.

  126. Gene-Zo says:

Thank you, Milo! I hate to sound like an old fart, but I hate when players “admire” their hits — Marte didn’t break out of a trot until he was rounding second. With two outs, what the hell was he trotting for?

  127. JohninOshkosh says:

No. I agree with you, Plan. Ortiz doesn’t pass the eye test at all. He married a local girl (divorced ?). Saw him once. He looked bloated.

  128. Patrick(ri) says:

Not a Bosox fan, but observing from up here, I kind of think papi is clean.

  129. JRay3 says:

Really nice job by Cole to battle and leave the bases loaded as he throws his fourth zero on the board.

Chance to get to Miller as he has not looked very sharp.

  130. theplanisworking says:

  131. Barb says:

    Petey did it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  132. casper in a-town says:

    Wow. That is all.

  133. theplanisworking says:

    Pedro with another dinger !!
Would be nice to see him hit 40, while reducing his K’s by at least 10%.

  134. JRay3 says:

Umm, Mr. Miller, Pedro own you!

El Toro going yard for a second time! 2-0 good guys.

  135. Patrick(ri) says:

If you don’t have good breaking balls, he will kill you!

  136. theplanisworking says:

    Casper !!!
    Good to C you.

  137. theplanisworking says:

He did it just for you, Barb. ;)

  138. Bizrow says:

Its our list, the only time I hesitate is someone I don’t understand why

  139. Wild Bill says:

Got home in time to see Pedro’s second bomb!

  140. casper in a-town says:

Thanks, Plan! Finally able to sit down in the man cave, watch the game and follow the blog. Didn’t have much to add until Petey hit #2. FYI, the Canes are going to be honored at the Pirates game on April 17th. Ralphie Blundo is throwing out the first pitch.

  141. Carlos Danger says:

I still laugh when I think of DK writing “Bonds’ visibly smaller head”. Well put. And noticeable.

  142. Eric Bowser says:

Not sure what Molina and Miller were thinking on that pitching sequence. The first pitch was a curve and you could see Alvarez had it locked in and was like, man that was it. Then that…. kaboom!

  143. Milo Hamilton says:

    Holy Cowa Ishikawa.

  144. theplanisworking says:

    3-0 good guys !

  145. casper in a-town says:

    Ishi-WOW-a! Couldn’t resist.

  146. Eric Bowser says:

    Travis Ishikawa…..

    Travis Ishikawa…..

    Travis Ishikawa…..

  147. J Walter Weatherman says:

Nothing better than when Pedro is locked in. Now, if the Buccos can just get someone on base for him …

  148. Barb says:

    Cowabunga Ishikawa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  149. JRay3 says:

Hey our first baseman Ishikawa goes yard, how bout that…3-0 Bics as they continue to piund Miller.

  150. Wild Bill says:

    Calls for Polanco less numerous.

  151. Patrick(ri) says:

Kind of against the wind, too. Nice to see!

  152. Bizrow says:

I hope against reasonableness, Pedro says, Mr Boras, I understand the $$, but we like it in the Burgh

    Yeah, hope but expect

    Ishi goes deep, 3-0

  153. Wild Bill says:

    Duh, meant Smoak, Davis, etc.

  154. JRay3 says:

“Bucs”, “pound” ya that is what I meant.

  155. theplanisworking says:

    I saw that.
Blundo is being inducted into the Lawrence County HOF also.

  156. DJ says:

Not sure Pedro can handle the pressure of the No. 4 spot.

  157. theplanisworking says:

Bics come in handy for curtain calls. :)

  158. Patrick(ri) says:

Lots of seafood up here, maybe Barry and Papi have an allergy.

  159. JRay3 says:

Have always held out hope on that thought as well that maybe if he truly likes it there and seeing some of his teammates locked up he would be open to a hometown discount an continue to be a part of this.

    Not holding my breath.

  160. Milo Hamilton says:

Sandy Alderson just choked on his dinner.

  161. Baywatch says:

Attaboy, Neil!! The Plan Is WORKING!! :-)

  162. Carlos Danger says:

Man, it would be awesome to re-sign him, but I don’t think it will ever happen.

  163. Bizrow says:

    What a play by Martin

  164. Wild Bill says:

Sometimes we forget he’s still growing as a player.

  165. Wild Bill says:

    You betcha.

  166. PetroSteel says:

    Two Questions:

    1) Why can’t They put someone on bae when hit these Home runs????!!!!
    2) What the heck is taking so long to sign Pedro????!!!! Pedro is and will be our best player! Better than anyone else on the team. YOU CAN NOT REPLACE A PEDRO!!!! 10 year/200Million should do it I would think. Thoughts?

  167. Milo Hamilton says:

Nice shutdown inning. Feh. Get the pitcher out for goodness sakes.

  168. jay says:

    Why…what did he do?

  169. DJ says:

Love when he uses the whole field.

Will add 20 points to his average (minimum) once that becomes second nature.

  170. Andrew says:

    Is this a joke?

  171. theplanisworking says:

    You call, Bay??? ;)

  172. Milo Hamilton says:

  173. Brandie says:

    You slay me Bay Searage.

  174. Milo Hamilton says:

Greg Brown’s righteous indignation toward the Cardinals for signing Jhonny Peralta is hilarious. Guess I imagined the Pirates trading for Marlon Byrd.

  175. Brandie says:

Good to see the Buccos amping up the offense via dingers! Phooey on Matt Carpenter though.

  176. Baywatch says:

  177. Baywatch says:

    Oh, I’m BAYDRO tonight!

  178. Steelag70 says:

    Cole train is scuffling tonight…

  179. Patrick(ri) says:

Getting seasick from the dugout shots — must be really windy up there above center field.

  180. Brandie says:

    BAYDRO it is!!!!!!!!!!!

  181. Andrew says:

Breaking stuff has been sub-par, only about three swings and misses.

  182. theplanisworking says:

If I don’t like the Steelers announcers, I can always turn on Hilgrove and Tunch.
If I don’t like the Pens announcers, I can always turn on Lange and Tunch.

With the Pirates, I get stuck with Brown or Neverett all the time. It’s like listening to a clown car of awfulness.

  183. Arriba Wilver says:

One three run homer is much better than 3 homers with no one on.

  184. Bizrow says:

Pretty windy in Beaver County, the girls are barking at the wind

  185. Brandie says:

    93.7. THE PLAN!!!!!

  186. theplanisworking says:

How about Lange and Borque for the Pens.
Tunch on hockey broadcasts would be funny. :)

  187. chethejet1 says:

If Cole goes six for the first start, fine. Like all pitchers the real deal is something that develops over the season. He has 32 more of these. Can’t see 94 wins without getting another bat. Not talking about Polanco.

  188. Brandie says:

When did Tunch become a Pens Announcer?

  189. Patrick(ri) says:

Duda takes Leake outside the park, twice. You can get arrested for that in Newport.

  190. Brandie says:

“A clowncar of awfulness”, with Frank as the Chauffeur.

  191. Milo Hamilton says:

    Pedro – Lumber & Lightning.

  192. Patrick(ri) says:

Great camera shot on that steal.

  193. Steelag70 says:

  194. theplanisworking says:

  195. Brandie says:

Base hit for Cutch!! Listening on Sirius so I know I am a bit behind.

  196. Milo Hamilton says:

    Challenge it, please.

  197. JRay3 says:

  198. Andrew says:

    Calm down Molina.

  199. JRay3 says:

Saves his best for St. Louis.

  200. Brandie says:

  201. theplanisworking says:

    Brandie, just for you …………

    HI FRANK !! :)

  202. Wild Bill says:

Pedro’s having himself a litte bit of a game tonight.

  203. theplanisworking says:

    Pedro showing unknown speed tonight.

  204. Patrick(ri) says:

Is this Pedro’s contract year? Seriously, he is becoming a terrific ball player.

  205. Milo Hamilton says:

    Exactly. What a _______.

  206. Milo Hamilton says:

He is the best baserunner on the team. Period.

  207. Brandie says:

Just catching up on all that I have missed. Hillarious stuff and good to see the Buccos showing some offensive life!!

  208. DJ says:

One of the most arrogant organizations with all their ‘effen stars.

  209. Barb says:

Russell Martin heads up base running.

  210. JRay3 says:

Great base running being displayed by Pirates tonight, aggressive and challenging Cards outfield. Martin took advantage of lack of hustle in center to take third.

  211. Patrick(ri) says:

@Milo, as you said earlier, Jay could have done that well — catcher to third on that hit?

  212. Milo Hamilton says:

Hope Torts ends up on TV after he’s shown the door.

  213. JRay3 says:

    +++ my thoughts exactly

  214. chethejet1 says:

Cards will miss Beltran. Team speed is below average and CF is not a good hitter. But they have great pitching and have Tavares coming. They wont come close to the hitting with men on base of last year.

  215. Brandie says:

  216. Milo Hamilton says:

And we’ve proven we can’t get Jon Jay out.

  217. DJ says:

    Torts in + Milbury out.

Would be nice. Would be very entertaining.

  218. Steelag70 says:

Now THIS is the offensive effort we have been waiting for!! Go Bucs!! I really believe Petey will have a total breakout year. I think he started to show it in the playoffs last year. His power to LF will be the reason…hitting that way means his plate discipline is improving…

  219. Andrew says:

    Shut up Molina.

  220. theplanisworking says:

Martin really aggressive tonight, both on the bases, and on the field.

  221. JRay3 says:

Good gosh Molina is such a cry baby, his act gets old.

  222. Bizrow says:

PBC owns the rights to Pedro for two more years

What is the argument about now?

  223. Milo Hamilton says:

The only thing missing is LaSorda. And Reggie of course.

  224. Bizrow says:

  225. Bizrow says:

    umm, make that 6-2

  226. Brandie says:

    He is My Favorite Martin!!

  227. Milo Hamilton says:

    Big night for Gabykawa.

  228. theplanisworking says:

    And Gaby with the ribbie.

Always good to beat the Cards. :)

  229. JRay3 says:

Pirates steal that run with their heads up play on the bases tonight.

And now Gaby with a RBI off of a RHP to give the Buccos a 6-2 lead…offensive fireworks tonight!

  230. Wild Bill says:

Or a fly ball at the fence for Holliday.

  231. Barb says:

  232. Brandie says:

    Awesome!!!! SCIRE!!!!!

  233. Bizrow says:

So, you take Cole out now, right?

  234. JRay3 says:

Pirates looking far more fundamentally sound than Cards this evening.

  235. Barb says:

I thought fireworks are tomorrow night! :)

  236. Patrick(ri) says:

This game is a hoot to watch.

  237. Milo Hamilton says:

    Somebody’s going down.

  238. Steelag70 says:

    Bats are out tonight!!!

  239. Bizrow says:

  240. JohninOshkosh says:

    Outstanding posts tonight by everyone.

As always, I bow to you, Milo.

  241. Brandie says:

Tells all of the naysayers to STFU at least for tonight. ;)

  242. Patrick(ri) says:

    Just got that one.

  243. Brandie says:

    That’s STFU Molina!

  244. jay says:

    What did he do

  245. Andrew says:

It is Bourjos then Descalso, neither can really hit, hope the leash is short.

  246. theplanisworking says:

is that a picture of a constipated Bo Ryan?
Good Luck tomorrow in the F4.

  247. Milo Hamilton says:

Right back at you. You are aware I have Florida. Low 3 figures if the Gators win. Pretty much guarantees one of the other three teams will win. On Wisconsin in that case.

  248. The Bucs always start off well against the Cardinals early in the season. Anyhow, they should get the game in after that rain delay.

  249. Steelag70 says:

Shelby Miller is always good medicine for ailing Bucco bats!!

  250. Barb says:

These umps behind the plates couldn’t find a strike if it hit them up side the head. Crikey!

  251. JRay3 says:

Heck of a first start for Gerrit Cole who has the look of a pitcher that will one day win a Cy Young.

Gets through seven innings on 107 pitches allowing just the two runs on the Carpenter HR. Avoided trouble in the fourth and coasted his final two innings of the night.

Most impressive, still hitting 98 on the gun at the end.

  252. Barb says:

Cole making a statement with that last pitch!!!!!!

  253. Bizrow says:

IMO one inning too many for Gerrit

    Close to 110 pitches?

  254. zorro says:

Petey always runs the bases hard. Very rare these days…

  255. Patrick(ri) says:

Interestingly, the Pirates seem to have more cool “swagger” against the Cards than they did against the Cubs. It looks good on them.

  256. jay says:

Now what is happening w Molina…can’t wait to get home so I can see games

  257. Brandie says:

Good gravy. Umpiring can be the most self centered jib there is…”It’s All About Me.”

  258. Arriba Wilver says:

    I love Gerrit Cole. (ILGC).

    That is all.

  259. Brandie says:

    Molina is whiny!!!! Annoying!!!!

  260. Wild Bill says:

Pens recalled Ebbett from S-WB. Beau knows injuries??

  261. JohninOshkosh says:

No money at stake for me-just my blood and heart. But, if they should not win, I hope the three bill payoff goes to you.

That Sandy Alderson line just got me tonight. Laughed out loud. My wife asked, “what’s so funny ?” I said, “Milo.”

@Plan. He doesn’t look so constipated if you click and enlarge it.

  262. Bizrow says:

    Lets get a couple more

  263. chethejet1 says:

Two months of Travis Snyder is a killer. He has absolutely no baseball instincts as to batting eye. How this guy was drafted in the first round as a guy with some pop is one bad scouting call.

  264. Milo Hamilton says:

Hey, they even executed that properly.

  265. Andrewhi says:

Projecting how high school hitters will develop is a difficult job.

  266. Barb says:

Afraid to pitch to Petey, really?!?!????!?!?!?!?!?!? HaHaHa

  267. Patrick(ri) says:

Intensity and enthusiasm are pretty good PEDs.

  268. JRay3 says:

Everybody getting into the act tonight.

Pirates have one distinct advantage on Cards – bullpen.

  269. Bizrow says:

I think I just saw a Travis Snyder fellow score ;-)

  270. theplanisworking says:

    Another rbi from Martin.
Nice to see the bats tonight.

  271. JohninOshkosh says:

    Travis Snider=Ballplayer
    Zach Snyder=Filmmaker
    Schnieder=One Day at a Time

  272. chethejet1 says:

Injuries last year limited him. But I don’t see any freaken improvement from the day he got here.

  273. JohninOshkosh says:

Good Gravy! It’s coming back, baby!

  274. chethejet1 says:

No body hitting this guy with this stuff.

  275. JRay3 says:

Get the feeling we may be looking at the future closer of the Pirates with this electric version of Bryan Morris.

Just over powered middle of Cards lineup in 8th, spotting ball wherever he wanted.

  276. Patrick(ri) says:

Of all the great stuff tonight, what I am most surprised and impressed with : PA beating out a DP, then stealing second, then flying home and making a great slide to get under Molina’s tag – not to mention his skin.

  277. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

He is a very good base runner, especially for a bull.

  278. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Nice offensive output by the home team. Ish goes yard? Hard to complain at this point.

    Small sample size of course.

  279. JRay3 says:

Tabby turns on one and doubles in Mercer, 8-2 its a rout.

  280. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I do not remember that gas last year, could be me but that slider to Holiday was filthy

  281. Milo Hamilton says:

Alderson just called Huntington. Neil let it go to voicemail.

  282. JohninOshkosh says:

Frankie tomorrow night on national television.

I like this making the playoffs thing. Gets you some prime time exposure.

  283. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Totally agree JRay.

    Could do it this year.

  284. Arriba Wilver says:

  285. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Well, it goes as a hit and a RBI, but nothing pretty there.

  286. Bizrow says:

    On Wisconsin

  287. JRay3 says:

Think I saw Bucs will be in FOX 4 times this season, FS1, 3 times and even a Sunday Night ESPN telecast in May.

  288. Barb says:

    This is so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  289. theplanisworking says:

    11-2 good guys.
Need to save some runs for another game. :)

  290. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

That might be the last pitch Cutch sees all season.

  291. Bizrow says:

A beautiful Friday night in the burgh

  292. Andrew says:

Yes the Cardinal improved the defense in center but Holliday is in left and a first baseman in right.

  293. Barb says:

I was just thinking that especially Sunday against Wainwright.

  294. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Blow the house up!!!!

Would be nice to spread some out, they’ll probably get. 3 runs the next 2 games.

  295. DJ says:

Nothing more beautiful than a Cutch triple to right center.

My favorite thing to watch in baseball.

  296. JRay3 says:

Cutch two RBI triple, 11-2 Buccos.

Alvarez than makes it 12-2 on productive out.

    Offense making a statement tonight.

  297. Wild Bill says:

Bucs have done much better tonight of going with the pitch. Lots more hits.

  298. Steelag70 says:

    BIG bats tonight!!!

  299. Eric Bowser says:

You know, I’m really glad I didn’t post one of those blistering critiques of the Pirates offense.

  300. theplanisworking says:

Barb, I guess we just have to hope.
Funny game baseball is……… score a total of 6 runs the first 3 games, 11 tonight.
But, it beats a bunch of zeroes.

  301. This is great! Now the Bucs are pounding the Cardinals 11-2!

  302. theplanisworking says:

Save it for the Pens. :)

  303. JohninOshkosh says:

Absolutely agree. Dude is a blur around the base paths.

  304. And now, it’s 12-2! Weee!

  305. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Serious question :

Does anybody view the blog from an IPhone?

How do I save DK’s blog to my favorites so I don’t have to go through all of his twitter fights to find the link?

  306. cmat0829 says:

was it boomer and carton? I guess c-sections well ahead of due dates and this TJ surgery thing run hand in hand.

  307. Eric Bowser says:

Get the Trib App… quite easy to view the blog then.

  308. Arriba Wilver says:

  309. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Wainwright is scary good.

  310. Barb says:

    You got that right!

  311. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Sweet thanks

  312. cmat0829 says:

loved when steve blass called it a “long, lazy triple” … good call Steve…. take points away for you then quickly covering your Politically Correct arse by saying ” the flight of the ball was lazy I meant”…

  313. Eric Bowser says:

Oh, my critical thinking analysis won’t be all that deep with the Penguins.

    Quite simple formula.

    Win, I’ll shut up.

    Lose, blow it up.

  314. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    That was ridiculously easy

  315. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

J-weezie having a hard time finding the zone.

  316. Eric Bowser says:

    make check payable to:

  317. cmat0829 says:

LOTS of great things to like about tonight’s game…… in order:

    1) Offense awakens against a damn good young pitcher. Bucs add on, something they have a hard time doing.
    2) Gerrit Cole is the ACE of this staff, no doubt about it. Frankie is plenty good but Gerrit’s got IT.
    3) Cards sloppy still on defense. Bourjos is better than Jay overall but Holliday is a butcher and Peralta is an offensive shortstop.
    4) Good to win a game vs. the Cards and let Watson, Melancon and Grilli just chill and watch.
    5) Morris and Wilson have closer stuff….

  318. JRay3 says:

It was the Cole and Alvarez show tonight in Pittsbugh. Cole goes seven strong innings and Alvarez homers twice as the Bucs drub the Red Birds 12-2 in the first game of this three game series and there was noooooooo doubt about it.

The Pirates belted out 16 hits as every Pirate starter minus the pitcher got a hit and five players belted out multi-hit games. The Bucs improve to 3-1 on the year.

The Pirates will look to take their second consecutive series tomorrow night when Francisco Liriano toes the rubber in his second start of the year.

    Let’s Go Bucs.

  319. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Dear NH,

I would like to request a Pedro extension.

    Thank you.

  320. theplanisworking says:

  321. pattonbb says:

    ….fear the Bones….

  322. Eric Bowser says:

yes, yes, yes, yes and…… yes!

  323. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  324. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    P. S.

    Gerrit Cole too please

  325. And now, I’ll always wonder why the Bucs had problems getting going offensively against the Cubs during the opening series.

  326. Sorry that Dejan had flight issues getting out of Winnipeg today and thus couldn’t get his chat column in. We’ll see him next week then.

  327. JohninOshkosh says:

  328. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Nice to see some offense from the Pirates.
I guess it’s apparent that there will be nothing added till the team proves it can stay in contention sometime in late July.

  329. Baywatch says:

A little late is better-than-never, John … UP HERE! :-)

  330. Baywatch says:

    Me & Brandie’s Favorite Martin!

I live in the U.K. where there’s a five hour time difference to EDT. Last night I woke up at up at 02:40, sleep-eyed, and turned on MLB-TV to see how the Pirates were doing against the Cardinals after the rain delay. I discovered a 3-2 ballgame in the last of the 6th. Then, in the next hour or so, the Bucs scored nine runs. Count ‘em. 9 runs! Everybody on the team was hitting like a house on fire.
Few things in life are quite so pleasant as that.

I’ve been saying that as well, Andrew. The only way to really make a decision on Ishikawa is to run him out there consistently for a few weeks and see what he does. Of course, it will still be a small sample size, but they will be putting scouting eyes on him, and may be better able to assess whether he can cut it long term, or if they need to make a trade.

Ha, we all missed out on the best game in town, apparently.

After 4 games it does seem that is apparent
