  1. Rbilak says:

Pens call up a player over 6′, wasn’t Mini-Me available?

All kinda excuses ready for tonight not just 3.

    1. We are playing back to back
    2. The air in Mile High provides a different high
    3. Nothing to play for
    4. New guy makes team to “Heavy”
    5. Effort actually takes effort
    6. They are working on different things. What they are and how it will help them remains a mystery.
    7. No one wants to get hurt, so they are saving it for playoffs
    8. Olympics were more important to half the team

Expect some excellent short-handed chances as Talbot will expose powerplay issues which never are addressed.

At what point will Steigy interject time is running out in the game for Pens to get back in it?

  2. Brandie says:

    Spot on.

At a mile above sea level, the air is not so “heavy “.

  3. And the 1-3-1 will be easier. Haven’t bored anybody with that for a while.

  4. theplanisworking says:

Wisconsin should have used a 1-3-1 , Reverend.
I hope you all have a great Sunday evening.

  5. Brandie says:

    Revvie and Leaping Planny Poffo!

  6. Milo Hamilton says:

Crosby, Kunitz, Orpik & Maata all out tonight. All listed with various, vague minor injuries. I’d say they were getting a rest But I thought they did that last night.

  7. Rbilak says:

I think they have had quite a few off. Why not just forfeit? If I were an Avs fan I would want a refund. They play like crazy for Olympics, yet there employers get half effort, must be nice.

  8. It’s the last road game of the regular season. And thank heaven for that, since the Avalanche are a tough enough team as it is. At least the Pirates won a good one today so a Pens loss tonight would be a bit less painful if no less disgusting.

  9. Brandie says:

Condolences on the passing of John Pinette in Pittsburgh. One heck of a comedian.

  10. chethejet1 says:

Pens from the beginning of this season, it was all about the playoffs. Not sure the brass has that view.

  11. Pucknutz says:

Wow people, lets load up a ton more negativity.

” vague minor injuries” —got that straight from the trainer and doctors did ya ?
“….Pens loss tonight would be a bit less painful if no less disgusting.” — Ya it’s “disgusting” to perhaps lose to one of better teams in the the league with about half the team out injured. (Vague and minor for sure but out none the less)

This game “is” meaningless, so let’s just dump on the Pens for lack of effort , pride, etc, etc, etc,….
Maybe all the snark is seen as cool, dunno, but in this case totally unjustified. IMHO

  12. Milo Hamilton says:

Injuries listed are “upper body”, “lower body” etc.. Those descriptions by definition are vague. Bylsma says none of them are believed to be long term. Thus my use of the term minor. Various vague, minor injuries. Seems pretty simple to me.

And when they don’t try very hard, I’m going to call them out on it. One mark of Bylsma teams has been, with very few isolated exceptions, great effort night in & night out. That hasn’t been the case since the Olympics. And there’s no excuse for it.

  13. Milo Hamilton says:

And by the way, actually resting people like they are tonight is a whole lot more acceptable than going through the motions & risking serious injury.

  14. Milo Hamilton says:

Baby Pens outshot 15-8 in the 1st period. Outstanding work by Marc Andre Fleury to keep it scoreless. Colorado holds a 10-4 edge on faceoffs mainly because the Pens neglected to dress any centers tonight.

  15. I would think that if the Pens’ coach was Clint Hurdle instead of Dan Bylsma, things on that team would be different. I mean, there’d be a more bulldog type, more relentlessly competitive effort in every last game, and noone would settle for second best, ever!

  16. Pucknutz says:

Touche, Milo…. I read more “snark” into it than maybe was your intention. It “is” “pretty simple” but the “rest last night” does imply at least some cynicism. Come on Milo, ya were taking a shot at em, we can parse the semantics till the cows come home and “if” no snark was intended, my apologies.

I agree w/your last paragraph …”great effort night in & night out.”….That is a bit of of question and a concern.

  17. Pucknutz says:

  18. Andrew says:

    Accurate and concise.

  19. J Walter Weatherman says:

Bubblegum on the ice is a recipe for disaster.

  20. Milo Hamilton says:

Scratching guys to rest them if you feel they need it is just plain smart. My problem is that guys have been resting when they’re in the lineup. I just don’t get a good vibe about the whole thing. We shall see how it all plays out.

Scire ! See, scratch enough guys even Brandon Sutter can score. First even strength goal that wasn’t an empty netter since December 19th.

  21. Stuart says:

Do you suppose that Bylsma read the riot act to Sutter between periods? Pens 1-0 in the second period.

  22. The Penguins have just scored! Can it hold up! Will they actually win tonight?! We shall see!

  23. Stuart says:

    Way to go Bylsma 2-0.

  24. Milo Hamilton says:

Tonight’s lineup reminds me of our teams of the early 80’s where a guy like Brandon Sutter was our best player.

  25. Milo Hamilton says:

“Brandon, sit down. Look son, you’re all we got.”

  26. Sarah says:

    Wow, Sutter again!

  27. Stuart says:

Way to coach the PK Dan.

  28. Jandy says:

  29. Jandy says:

Stay tuned for the next episode of….

  30. Milo Hamilton says:

Shero just called Mike Gillis in Vancouver just to make sure he was watching.

  31. Jandy says:

  32. She lives on the weekend!

  33. This shows good goaltending beats good hitting any day.

    Wait, wrong sport.

  34. Jandy says:

LOL! I’ve been taking good care of hubby…he’s still miserable, poor man

  35. Jandy says:

Still sounds good to me Revvie!

  36. Hard to believe the Pens are actually ahead 2-0! Let’s hope that holds up and that they can actually win tonight if possible!

  37. Eric Bowser says:

A meaningless game for the logo, Martin, Niskanen, Scuderi, Fleury, Neal, and Jokinen.

Dare say the AHLers have a lot to play for because come playoff time, this team is going to need the depth because teams rarely go far without a little help.

Had the kids birthday party so missed the Pirates game, saw Volquez pitched pretty well. That’s a good sign.

  38. Stuart says:

Payerl looking good. Non-smurf size, net-front presence. Dan is coaching his butt off.

  39. Milo Hamilton says:

I really miss Max Talbot. So do the Pens.

  40. Jandy says:

Howdy Eric…where was the party held?

  41. JohninOshkosh says:

Highly recommend Starkey’s column from this morning. Kid hit a walk off grand slam with that one.

Brought tears to my eyes as I remembered my sporting experiences with my late father. Had very similar thoughts as Starkey as I watched my Dad pass away.

Hope Mr. Starkey recovers to take Joe to another game soon.

  42. Jandy says:

    6’3 218 lbs

  43. Give him my best.

  44. Jandy says:

    Thanks for the tip Oshie

  45. Jay says:

    ++++ Absolutely they do

  46. Rbilak says:

MAF playing great, good sign. Hopefully we get the same play FO, Sutter in playoffs. Steigy will change tactics and say Avs running out of time.

  47. Milo Hamilton says:

I was at the game today and Volquez looked terrific. Mixed his pitches very well & had the Cards off balance all day. Another big hit for Tony Sanchez as well.

  48. Jandy says:

    Beautiful day for a game

  49. JD says:

Hey Pucknutz. The Pirates are playing better than most expected so the blog has to double up on the negativity here.

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

Thanks John. I’ve never met Starkey but I do know people who worked with him at the Valley News Dispatch & they all like him very much.

When my dad would take me to Pirates games at the conclusion of the Anthem he’d look at me & say “play ball”. That later evolved into us saying it to each other as we both got older. He’s gone but I still say it. The kids think I’m nuts, but I’m still saying it to him. I did it again today. Hope he saw the game.

  51. Jandy says:

  52. Andrew says:

    Game on.

  53. DJ says:

Bortuzzo looking very shabby the last few games.

He must be filling in tonight for Brooks’ role.

  54. Sarah says:

    Despres has least TOI? Brilliant.

  55. DJ says:

    Last goal totally on Borts.

No puck support initially for Martin in corner and then standing “Brooks-like” directly in front of Fleury as Avs player walks in at right post.

  56. Sarah says:

    Good lord Adams is awful

  57. DJ says:

JiO: Sorry about those Badgers. We were pulling for them, now pulling for Kevin Ollie.

If Calhoun were still coaching I could not root for either team.

  58. Milo Hamilton says:

Funny how he doesn’t need a rest.

  59. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks and ditto.

  60. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m sorry, have an upper body injury.

  61. DJ says:

Hey, you can’t spell Payerl without “P-L-A-Y-E-R”.

  62. Andrew says:

Adams did prevent a shot on an open goal earlier, but yes generally 5v5 he is bad.

  63. Sarah says:

    On PK also.

  64. JohninOshkosh says:

  65. DJ says:

I know this is repetitive grooming of a live horse (instead of beating a dead one), but Sutter has very good hockey sense and skills. To me, there are only two things preventing him from being an exceptional player:

    1. Solid line mates
    2. A more developed physique

No. 2 he can control. Would love to see him dedicate himself to transforming his body this summer. Hoping that the Kesler watch is a wake-up call for him.

  66. Milo Hamilton says:

I meant to predict that Andrew Ebbett would be playing the point on the power play, but I forgot.

  67. Sarah says:

This guy Payerl is all right….

  68. Jandy says:

  69. Sarah says:

  70. Stuart says:

    That shot was tipped twice.

  71. Milo Hamilton says:

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear Bortuzzo has action on the other side.

  72. DJ says:

WBS shootout with Payerl, Ebbett & Gibby?

  73. Looks like the Pens are going into overtime. They’re making more of a fight of this than you’d expect, which is just fine, though you’d prefer they’d win this thing.

  74. DJ says:

Just pray the puck is at the other end with 10 seconds or less to play.

Fleury’s been very shaky on last second scenarios.

  75. Milo Hamilton says:

In 88 minor league games, Payerl has 7 goals.

  76. Jandy says:

    shoot out

  77. DJ says:

    Then he’s due.

  78. Milo Hamilton says:

Works for me. There are no wrong answers tonight.

  79. Jandy says:

Jussi, that was a thing of beauty

  80. And now the hockey game is headed into a shootout, which assures the Pens of at least one lousy point, although I’d naturally prefer that they win this thing.

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

This is why you don’t bet.

  82. Jandy says:

We win…time for some ZZzZz’s night!

  83. DJ says:

  84. Sarah says:

  85. Jandy says:

Can anyone find the damn off button ???

  86. DJ says:

Hey, Dan is used to defying logic.

  87. Stuart says:

OT win in last road game.

Payerlmand Pyatt both payed well. MAF in playoff form?

    Way to coach Dn.

  88. Bizrow says:

“This is a win that can lift the whole organization”

Sorry, Paul S cannot hold Mike Lang’s jock strap, let alone figure out where it resides

    He is an idiot,

    That being said, Pens win

Lets see what happens in a week

  89. Somehow, the Pens, with several stars on the bench for one reason or another, won the shootout over the Colorado Avalanche and somehow played brilliantly for 53 minutes while doing so tonight. Naturally, we’d like to see them play this well all the time,.And now, it’s back to Pittsburgh for the last three regular season games and then the playoffs, and, hopefully, they can do as well as they just did in Denver by then,

  90. Sarah says:

I just iHeart Radio Mikey and the 29er and pause the DVR to synch up.
Steigey sounds a lot better in Mute.

  91. Bizrow says:

IMO Stiegy owes his hole career to Mike

    Mike is a HOFer

I cannot stand listening to that putz, Stiegy

He owes whole career to Lange

    Just saying

  92. Bizrow says:

    Crap, I repeated myself

Bit did I say Stiegy is a real putz ;-)

  93. I would now wish to conclude this evening by saying goodbye to the actor Mickey Rooney, who died today at 93. May he rest in peace.

  94. Stuart says:

Thank you for officially concluding the evening.

  95. Jandy says:

I agree with you 100% Biz,
Steigy is a putz, he owes his career to Mike.
    I agree with you 100%

I repeated myself too, but it’s worth it :)
