  1. Wild Bill says:

Let’s go Bucs! We want to get a rise out of Roger!

  2. Chuck H says:

The Cubbies don’t go down easily. They have a solid hitting lineup, but let’s go Bucs and outhit them. Stop that Phenom
who is hitting .500 for them and sweep in Chicago. GO, BUCS!!!

  3. NMR says:

Thanks goes to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette for posting lineup on their Pirate Blog:

    1.Starling Marte LF
    2.Travis Snider RF
    3.Andrew McCutchen CF
    4.Pedro Alvarez 3B
    5.Russell Martin C
    6.Neil Walker 2B
    7.Travis Ishikawa 1B
    8.Jordy Mercer SS
    9.Charlie Morton RHP

  4. JohninOshkosh says:

Dejan quit posting the starting lineups. And it’s getting harder to cut and paste tweets of starting lineups, because beat writers have more and more taken to just tweeting pictures of the posted starting lineups.

  5. JohninOshkosh says:

Early April night game at dark and chilly Wrigley. Sounds fun.

  6. “April showers bring Ishikawas”

  7. Arriba Wilver says:

As Jandy likes to say, you’re on a roll, Rev.

  8. JohninOshkosh says:

  9. Thundercrack says:

The brown ivy in Wrigley Field makes it look like they are playing baseball in a moat

  10. JohninOshkosh says:

Is it just me or does Wrigley look darker than other stadiums during night games ?

  11. NMR says:

Oh, certainly not knocking Dejan. He’s got much better things to do than post lineups.

“And here’s our Bucco Blog with all the pitching matchups, lineups, etc. Rob Biertempfel is on the scene for the Trib.”

Would be nice if this actually happened, though.

  12. Probably because they only have 3 or 4 light standards, right?

40-watt bulbs (or bubs as we say here in the second-place state) just don’t cut it.

  13. Carlos Danger says:

I am really glad that volquez didn’t completely melt down on Sunday. He looked really good. I realize it is early, but it was a very pleasant surprise, and I feel like his performance softened the blow of the taillon news. If he would have imploded and we found out taillon is out for the foreseeable future, it could have resulted in a perfect storm of disgruntled fans. Hope volquez keeps it up and hope Jameson makes a quick and complete recovery.

  14. JohninOshkosh says:

    I wasn’t knocking Dejan, either.

    1. Not his job.
    2. His blog.
    3. Blog is a free service. I never forget that.

  15. Bizrow says:

Dejan did tweet it ;-) Hours ago

  16. Bizrow says:

  17. Bizrow says:

The fans there like it dark, its that alcohol fuzz they have ;-)

  19. Andrew says:

Also two night games at Wrigley in one series, did they change the local ordinances?

  20. 21sthebest says:

There’s probably a moat around the regimes castle.

  21. Bizrow says:

They were negotiating it, don’t know what happened with that.

  22. NMR says:

Formed by linking dumpsters end to end.

  23. Andrew says:

Brad Lincoln came on the pitch the eight for the Phillies, just gave up a double, hit a batter, then a homer to Braun, third home run of the day.

  24. Bizrow says:

For those of you that were there, imagine Forbes Field 40 some years later ;-)

  25. NMR says:

Pedro will have eleventy homeruns this series if he continues hitting the ball in the air. #analysis

  26. He’s run on hard times since he left the Bucs. I’m a big fan of his. Still remember that stare-down of Thome after he K’d him.

Brad needs a good dose of Searage, Benedict and company.

  27. Bizrow says:

That being said, I understand why both places are revered. Me, I’ll take PNC Park any time

  28. Bizrow says:

As many have said, if he’s striking the ball to the left side, he is wired in

  29. Florida Steeler says:

Brewers have a nice lineup–they may be a problem this year.

  30. NMR says:

Still think of a game in September of 2012 in the midst of the Collapse when Pedro hit two breaking balls out of the stadium to the opposite field.

Outfielders never even moved. Most impressive display of oppo power I’ve ever seen.

  31. Andrew says:

They have a Pirate sized hole at first, 2nd base looks bad, and they have no depth anywhere. Bullpen is replacement level, but yes I agree they should be better, four serviceable to very good starters and solid lineup 1-6.

  32. NMR says:

Awesome work on the Bucco Blog today, Andrew.

  33. Andrew says:

Also of note in this Brewers blow out of the Phils; Brewers beat guy just tweeted if Wei-Chung Wang can’t get in this game for Brewers, he might not pitch all season.

  34. NMR says:

Obviously hyperbole, but still strange considering they’re apparently throwing Jim Henderson, a real-live good reliever.

  35. Andrew says:

Thanks, it is mostly Travis, he brings up interesting topics and I would rather go look at Morton heatmaps than read some depressing economic/political news during lunch.

  36. Wild Bill says:

Roidin Braun returned the affection of the Philthy phaithful by hitting three homers and driving in 7!!!

How frequently does he get drug tested this season?

  37. Brandie says:

Looking forward to seeing if Ishikawa can continue with decent plate presence. Also looking forward to seeing if Pedro can continue being disciplined at the plate and work that whole field power.

  38. bpn8pitt says:

    Holy heck.

  39. Andrew says:

I think this is what you call getting hit around.

  40. JRay3 says:

The left handed bats doing some damage this inning, Alvarez the 2 RBI double, Walker the RBI single and Ishikawa with a nice AB getting the SAC fly to bring in Martin. 4-0 good guys as they are teeing off on Edwin Jackson tonight to start.

  41. Wild Bill says:

    That half inning was acceptable.

  42. NMR says:

  43. pattonbb says:

Sounds like Dr. Andrews might have a very busy year. Braves lost their 3rd pitcher this season to Tommy John surgery (Cory Gearrin) and Matt Moore from the Rays is on his way for a “consultation”.

  44. NMR says:

    SAC FLY, ladies and gents!

    Who needs James Loney.

  45. Thundercrack says:

    Bouncing eyes Marte!

  46. Patrick(ri) says:

Theo better start filling the seats. This looks like a sparse crowd for Wrigley. Guess it is cold.

  47. Wild Bill says:

    Charlie bails out Marte.

  48. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Is 4 runs in the top of the 1st good?

  49. Brandie says:

I can hear He!! freezing over. Imagine that…A SAC Fly!

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

Wonder if Theo would like a mulligan on that Cashner / Rizzo trade ? Rizzo should be benched for that lazy trip around the bases.

  51. JRay3 says:

Nice to see Morton show some mental toughness and not let the Marte oops a daisy that seems to happen once every season affect him. Nice K to put the zero up on the board.

Jackson looking shaky, chance to blow this one open early.

  52. Brandie says:

What do you think, Kenny Powers?

  53. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Ishi never really got a chance in SF. Some guy named Brandon Belt beat him out.

  54. Thundercrack says:

I hope a representative from MLB was waiting at Ryan Braun’s locker with a pee cup after today’s game.

I hope it was Bud Selig

  55. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Sarcasm is a specialty of mine

  56. JRay3 says:

Yes he does, boy does he look like a very confident pitcher on the mound, quite the development and strides taken from when he first came to the team.

  57. Wild Bill says:

Or maybe Theo could get really upset and trade him to us! Still like the kid.

  58. Patrick(ri) says:

    Love to see that!

  59. Patrick(ri) says:

  60. Andrew says:

And a mulligan on the Castro extension.

  61. Brandie says:

Served up hot and fresh! :)

  62. Wild Bill says:

  63. Andrew says:

That is a cardinal sin, final out at third.

  64. bpn8pitt says:

Yup. Get into their pen, 1st game of the series. Quick turnaround tommorow? Like to see Chuck have some ez innings.

  65. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m glad he gets the big things right.

  66. Patrick(ri) says:

Is that a “choke” collar Starlin is wearing?

  67. Wild Bill says:

Is that our former player Hinskie coaching first for the Cubs? He looks like he swallowed another person since He played for us.

  68. Wild Bill says:

    Kalish just bunted? Seriously??

  69. Wild Bill says:

Those were not good at bats. Hope the guys don’t think this game was won after one inning.

  70. Arriba Wilver says:

  71. Arriba Wilver says:

Only if you forget the last 20 losing seasons. ;-)

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

    Nice job Charlie.

  73. bpn8pitt says:

    Holy heck…

  74. Milo Hamilton says:

    Hope y’all had the over.

  75. Patrick(ri) says:

They seem to be laying off his sinker?

  76. Bizrow says:

    Might be a long night

  77. Jandy says:

Someone takin’ my name in vain? ;)

  78. Andrew says:

I do not think Morton knows were that sinker is going tonight.

  79. Jandy says:

  80. Thundercrack says:

This is the kind of game where the Pirates get 2 more base runners the rest of the game …and lose

    Hope I am wrong.

  81. Jandy says:

If it’s Bud, Braun can pee on him too.

  82. JohninOshkosh says:

Braun just might win the MVP this year, provided any writer would vote for him. I have a feeling he’s gonna have a monster year relishing the villain role. Guy was willing to trash an innocent bureaucrat, he’s not going to let booing get him.

  83. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Well, so much for a lead.

  84. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

What I meant to say, here’s the lead again

  85. Jandy says:

    Thank you Cutch

  86. JRay3 says:

JohninOshKosh – I made it into Milwaukee this afternoon and am staying through the weekend to catch the Bucs series out here.

Did not know if you were going to make it down to any of the games, if so would still be interested in meeting up if possible.

First visit into this city, and can already tell that the folks here like their baseball and their Brewers and hear I am in for a treat with the tailgating, the smells and the ballpark.

  87. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

That was a sweet 2-0 pitch by Jackson to Pedro.

Not that I wanted him to beat Pedro there, I dig a well pitched pitch.

  88. JRay3 says:

+++…..he has been pitched around a bit here to start the season, just adds to the importance of Alvarez being able to thrive in the cleanup spot to offer Cutch some protection.

  89. Arriba Wilver says:

I liked the Z last year. It seemed different. I am not a fan of the gun thing. Seems forced, juvenile and inappropriate. The sooner they quit it the better. Did I say I don’t like it?

  90. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

If Cutch sees a hittable pitch all season Id be amazed.

  91. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

They used the Z 2 years in a row. It’s worn itself out.

  92. Jandy says:

You may have mentioned it in passing…

  93. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

As I’ve mentioned before, Ishikawa is good with th glove.

  94. 21sthebest says:

  95. Jandy says:

Nice Ishi! About time the Bucs get a break!

  96. bpn8pitt says:

Should of got Bonifacio to play 1st.

  97. JohninOshkosh says:

Hey, I’ll see what I can do. I have plans to go Sat. night, but I’m not sure about details yet. I’ll keep you posted.

Great baseball town. They tailgate every single game-81 times a year. Incredible scene. Like a Packers game except 73x more a year.

  98. Bizrow says:

Some teams just point towards the dugout

    Classy but simple

  99. Jandy says:

    Nice Martin!

  100. Thundercrack says:

I didn’t think the Z was all that mature

  101. Wild Bill says:

But tell us how you really feel, AW.

  102. 21sthebest says:

  103. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Man, I thought NW got ahold of that one.

  104. bpn8pitt says:

Lot of pretty blondes out there too…

  105. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I guess that’s getting ahold of one.

  106. Jandy says:

Ok guys, hold it down. My phone battery is almost dead…night! Go Ishi!

  107. JRay3 says:

How about Ishikawa with the triple, having himself a day.

  108. Wild Bill says:

Ishikawa was hissed about the first strike call, and took it out on Jackson.

  109. bpn8pitt says:

    Lol. Nevermind…

Bonifacio has more hits right then Gaby will have in the month.

    Ishikawa keeps chugging along.

  110. Wild Bill says:

Extension cord Jandy! Plug and play.

  111. Thundercrack says:

Doesn’t Ishikawa know first base is not a priority for this team ?

  112. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

That want a pitch out Greg

  113. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    He didn’t get the memo

  114. Arriba Wilver says:

Didn’t suggest it was mature. That would suggest I am. It just seemed spontaneous. The gun thing just seems wrong to me. And, like I said—forced. That’s just me.

And, Ryan, I agree, and am not suggesting they bring back the Z. I just don’t like the replacement.

  115. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Charlie’s not what one would call a “hitting pitcher”

  116. 21sthebest says:

Stetson Allie with a homerun tonight.

  117. DeveRow says:

Only the seventh game but tough not to like Ishikawa so far.

Professional approach. Good defensively and he’s had some patient, solid at-bats.

  118. DJ says:

Oh, schlit. Schlitter is warming up.

And it looks like he’s got his schlit finger schlitter working.

  119. JohninOshkosh says:

This is Scandinavian Central. Blonde should be the state color.

  120. Thundercrack says:

I’m not thrilled with it either

  121. J Walter Weatherman says:

Brewers games have the best tailgating of any park I’ve been to. I try to make it there once/year.

  122. Wild Bill says:

    LoL, DJ.

  123. J Walter Weatherman says:

    Schlitter squeaks one out.

  124. JohninOshkosh says:

Never gets old. Dude must have been tough as nails in middle school. Like a boy named Sue.

  125. JohninOshkosh says:

I never like the “Z”. Thought it was a blatant rip off of the Prince Fielder Monsters thing the Brewers did the year before.

And, who wants to be like the Brewers ?

  126. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I feel sorry for those on the cleanup crew for Pup Night.

    Schlitter everywhere.

  127. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

So right now would you rather have Ishi at 1st or Frank Rizzo?

  128. Wild Bill says:

Looked in on the women’s championship game. UConn has one of the largest women I’ve ever seen playing in the post.

Geno’s throw down with Muffet doesn’t look very competitive.

  129. Arriba Wilver says:

I don’t LIKE it! And, I suspect it won’t last.

  130. Wild Bill says:

Frank Rizzo! There’s a chilling name from the past.

  131. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Travis Snider, still dripping with power.

  132. JohninOshkosh says:

Baseball highlight of the year for me occurred when Matt Cain escorted Batkid out to the bump at AT&T for the first pitch.

I love that tough as nails brave little guy.

  133. New term for when bases are loaded against good old Schlitster – “Schlitter’s Full!”

  134. DJ says:

For the guys, the Trenni avatar is like a bright light to a moth.

It would be like Jandhi switching to a Brad Pitt avatar for the women.

  135. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Did Wehner just say Pedro was his front runner for MVP?

    Wishful thinking.

  136. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  137. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Had friends at the game. Said it was very cool

  138. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Tell me you didn’t say that name in their voice?

Admit it, you can’t do it liver lips

  139. Thundercrack says:

There are 3 inter-league games tonight.

  140. Milo Hamilton says:

Willy Garcia hit a walkoff homer for Altoona tonight. Saw him in Florida, he’s tall.

  141. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Is it just me, or is CM getting more movement on his pitches as the night goes on?

And not enough on that one to Castro.

  142. bpn8pitt says:

The only thing I don’t like right now is that neither him or Gaby can play anywhere else. I think Ishikawa shagged some flyballs in spring but that was it.

Moving forward that could be something to watch, if Ishikawa stays consistent.

Just can’t see keeping two 1b only guys with minimal power. Think that’s why they were hoping Lambo would take the job. As Tomlin says, position flexibility.

  143. J Walter Weatherman says:

welp, going to be up to the bullpen to hold this one

  144. Since this is my first night back on the blog for the season, here is the link to the second page of my Pittsburgh 2014 website for pictures from opening day at PNC Park that I took:

PS to Charlie – stop throwing hanging breaking stuff to Castro – he’s burned you twice now.

  145. Patrick(ri) says:

What did Castro put on his wheaties today? He even made an effort at short last inning.

  146. JohninOshkosh says:

Straight out of Muskego High School, Wuakesha County, Wisconsin and a Marquette grad.

    Big marathon runner.

One of those Brewers blondes that bpn likes!

  147. DeveRow says:

Ishikawa has pretty much been the same as Morneau so far in how he’s gone about his business. Morneau obviously didn’t hit with much power here and Ish probably won’t but both good guys, strong defensively and good approaches at the plate whether they’re hitting HRs or not.

  148. Milo Hamilton says:

Last time I saw this many hangers I was at the airport.

  149. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

And what a sweet effort that was.

All the talent in the world with the attention span

  150. Andrew says:

I don’t think he has had great control all night, he was ahead 0-2 both times to Castro

  151. Arriba Wilver says:

Whoa, Charlie looking shaky with the long balls. Got lucky on that last one.

  152. Wild Bill says:

Olt’s pinch hitting. The schlitt’s all over.

  153. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Or in your wife’s closet

  154. J Walter Weatherman says:

Morton fortunate to get out of the inning without further damage. He had no idea where his pitches were going by the end of that inning. Too many of them were ending up deep into the outfield or seats.

  155. Milo Hamilton says:

For those interested the Flyers, Wings & CBJ all won tonight. Everything remains status quo.

  156. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

You hang em, he bangs em

  157. Milo Hamilton says:

    I don’t look in there.

  158. JohninOshkosh says:

    Some great pictures.

And some St. Patrick’s Day parade bonus shots.

  159. DeveRow says:

    Nice steady offense tonight.

  160. That parade was actually my first PGH St. Patrick’s Day parade too. I enjoyed the opener with the weather and being able to get a little close for the ceremony.

  161. chethejet1 says:

Morton to me is a pitcher who simply loses focus an it costs him. Just not totally buying into his mental approach maturing. Cubs are not a banger lineup and while he didn’t have really good stuff, giving up 5 is not very good. Four run lead and he just couldn’t make it work is troublesome. With Tallion done and Morton being at best a three and probably a four on a good staff, NH may have to open the checkbook for a number two. Wandy is not a top of the rotation guy so that leaves Francisco. Locke can take Wandy’s LH role but man I would role the dice to extend Francisco all things being equal.

  162. Bizrow says:

The thing is, they have been there, done that

Always admired Barry Sanders, he would simply hand the ball to the Ref

  163. bpn8pitt says:

I’m ready for Polanco. I’ve just seen enough of Snider and Tabata.

  164. Andrew says:

I do not think long term contract decisions should be based on six innings.

  165. Bizrow says:

Not a good start for Tony

  166. DeveRow says:

I’d consider Cole and Liriano 1-2. Morton and Wandy 3-4. Those are four solid starters better than a lot of teams but they’re probably not all going to be healthy the entire season making all of the starts. They’ll need some help whether it’s Cumpton, Locke or an external option.

  167. Jay says:

Once again, “the little things”. We get the first two on in the 7th. Ishikawa fails to move them over, three consecutive outs and we strand them on first and second……

  168. J Walter Weatherman says:

When did the Cubs get professional hitters?

  169. At some point you would think these guys would figure out how to pitch to Bonafacio. Blown lead in another game already. New ball game again and so far the last two innings the offense has scuttled with runners on and few outs. Need to get it done in the next two without giving up any more runs.

  170. DJ says:

You’ll need to update your avatar to a photo pulling out the six shooter.

That “Z thang” is so yesteryear.

  171. JohninOshkosh says:

This game might go until 2:00 AM CT.

  172. chethejet1 says:

Not six innings, how about his career before and after his TJ surgery. Just not quite what I was hoping for but he is mid three high four range. He is under contract so he is what he is. Tallion loss is a big hit for sure.

  173. I hear ya, but that was taken last year, and any chance to remember the season of last year is good at this point. I really hope it continues this year, too! I’ll see what I can do, though.

  174. Andrew says:

Morton has been an effective pitcher since going to the 3/4 arm slot, I agree middle of rotation. The Pirates will likely need to bring in outside pitching for 2015 but rightly or wrongly I do not see this organization paying top dollar for pitching, I think they believe in their system of shifting, groundballs, and power suppressing park.

  175. Andrew says:

It took Marte 26 games to draw six walks last year.

  176. Let’s go Martin! Schlitter’s Full!! Oooops that dude is out of the game, but here we go!

  177. Got the go ahead run in, though. Get some more Neil!

  178. Patrick(ri) says:

A sacrifice fly, and it is only April!

  179. DeveRow says:

Will that be enough? Doesn’t seem like it tonight.

  180. DJ says:

I’ve got a suggestion for your next avatar, JiO.

The statue of Marilyn Monroe at PPG Plaza. She’s now got a tie to The Burgh.

  181. Patrick(ri) says:

    Fortunately, Castro still lacks discipline.

  182. At least our Starling seems to be coming around to that plate discipline thing a little – just a little.

  183. Bizrow says:

Lets take this one, say thank you very much and get on with tomorrow

  184. JRay3 says:

Melancon has needed just 15 pitches in his last two outings, going 1-2-3 in both.

  185. Patrick(ri) says:

    He is getting there.

  186. Patrick(ri) says:

    Carved me up. Very nice.

  187. Patrick(ri) says:

Ah, the iPad does’t like “em.”

  188. Andrew says:

I hope Grilli has brought some fastball command.

  189. Patrick(ri) says:

The Cubs play like a minor league team!

  190. Bizrow says:

    Cool beans

  191. Raise it! Night all!

  192. JRay3 says:

Behind a four run first inning outburst, a late sacrifice fly, the Pirates second of the game, this time off the bat of Russell Martin in the 8th and the fine work of the back end of the bullpen between Melancon and Grilli the Pirates sink the Cubs in the opener of this three game series 7-6 and there was nooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Pirates improve to 5-2 on the season and are now 3-1 versus division rival Chicago to begin the year. The Pirates will go for their third consecutive series win out of the gates tomorrow night in the middle game of this series. Wandy Rodriguez will make his second start of the year for the Bucs.

    Let’s Go Bucs.

  193. Wild Bill says:

Great work by Melancon and Grilli! Raise it!

  194. Lad 9 says:

Raise it! Nice start for the Buccos.

  195. Baywatch says:

Hey! Hey! Hey! Up HERE, Everybody!

  196. Jandy says:

Brad Pitt is fine, but George Clooney or Robert Downey Jr would be much better ;)

  197. Jandy says:
