Comments

  1. Reading says:

A multi-run home run today would really be key. By the Pirates, of course.

  2. NMR says:

Polanco would’ve hit a five run homerun already if Nutting wasn’t so cheap.

  3. Leo Walter says:

    NMR : ++++ !

  4. scapper says:

Yes, that’s hilarious! Quite Milo-like, which is the best humor compliment I can give on this blog.

  5. tdb1977 says:

I’m going to make a bold prediction…this game is going to stay tied for several innings and go extras. Weather is completely different beast today with it being cold and snowy. Would not be surprised that it goes 11 or 12 innings. The second game will probably be a 3-2 final. Hope the Bucs can get 2 W’s today

  6. Reading says:

Who’s Polanco? Is he somebody who can hit?

  7. Wild Bill says:

Out pitched half the staff, too!

  8. Baywatch says:

Any word on who’s starting the suspended game?

  9. Reading says:

    Today’s prediction: Pirates should win.

  10. Nate83 says:

I haven’t heard Bay but Stolmy hasn’t pitched in a long time. I could definitely see him getting the nod.

  11. Nate83 says:

Well the Pirates shouldn’t give up 4 leads in a game but then again the Reds shouldn’t give up 3 leads. Really an amazing game that will be finished today. I’m looking forward to watching it.

  12. NMR says:

Game(s) will come down to bullpens. Adavantage Pirates.

  13. Or, can you say Jeanmar with Stolmy in reserve?

  14. Jim S. says:

Baserunners are expensive, so Nutting insists on solo blasts.

  15. cmat0829 says:

Game 1 resumes in 7th inning with Pirates batting…. I think if the Pirates take the lead in the 7th, it is Watson – Melancon – Grilli. Given this one could go extras and you have a full game following, you save Stolmy and Gomez for later use. That’s just my view on it.

  16. Baywatch says:

Sorta like the Thrilla In Manilla! But I’ll take Ali OR Frazier over either Pirates or Reds in THIS game!

  17. theplanisworking says:

I think this should be a focus on this Tax day :

Boston is observing the anniversary of the tragedy last year. I think that should be the appropriate thing to focus on today. Glad to see the spirit of the people of Boston in full force today. Hope to see it again next Monday, when the actual marathon is run.

  18. cmat0829 says:

Oh and in case anyone is interested, in the MLBTradeRumors chat today, moderator was asked when Cardinals would call up Tavares (their version of Polanco)…answer was “not before June, not so much for performance but to avoid Super2″….. when did Nutting buy the Cardinals and install NH as GM?

  19. Nate83 says:

With Gomez struggling and the Pirates coming off a 3 game losing streak I would think Stolmy get the call especially with his limited workload so far. I do agree with cmat that if the Pirates start the 7th with back to back HR’s they go with their usual order to finish the game.

  20. tdb1977 says:

As a New Englander still at heart, my heart and mind have been back home today and will be back there next Monday. I’m glad that I work an early shift next Monday so I can get home in time to watch the marathon. Now, the question is, will I be able to find it on TV.

  21. cmat0829 says:

Fully agreed. It should be noted also that this April 15 is Jackie Robinson celebration day…so both teams will wear 42….

  22. cmat0829 says:

I think even if it’s tied, Clint is likely to go with late game relievers and not a long-man… but maybe that’s just my wishful thinking. I think you manage this as if you were playing it last night, and you wouldn’t go with Stolmy or Gomez to follow Morris…in fact you’d probably leave Morris in in a tie game for the 7th (which Clint could still do today).

  23. Nate83 says:

You just relit a fire that had died out. Are you going to throw the grenade and run like you did on DK’s blog? :)

  24. Cardinals are using their money instead to build a ski lift at Busch Gardens.

  25. Nate83 says:

It will be interesting to see how they handle it. It’s a unique situation. What an awesome game.

  26. theplanisworking says:

cmat, please give it a rest.
    Seriously man.

  27. NMR says:

    Hahaha, excellent!

  28. NMR says:

    About that Jason Bay trade…

  29. Reading says:

Additional prediction: Somebody wearing number 42 will score the winning run.

  30. theplanisworking says:

The one nobody talks about anymore?

  31. Reading says:

The Rams get better ratings for their fourth pre-season game than the Cards do for their playoff games– new can of worms.

  32. theplanisworking says:

The Pirates need to think about doing something like this.
The Phillies did it, and it looks so cool ……….

    http://nextimpulsesports.com/2014/04/15/phillies-use-childrens-drawings-players-jumbotron-headshots/

  33. theplanisworking says:

Is that a true stat, Reading?
Wow. I knew the NFL drew good ratings, but ……..

  34. NMR says:

Look, all I’m sayin’ is Bryan Morris throws 97. More than fair to NH for us to revisit the return…

(I can’t even write that sarcastically without cringing!)

  35. Jim S. says:

That was a cool idea. I have to hand it to the Phils for that.

  36. theplanisworking says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Yeah, but thankfully, Neal has gotten better.
And, I am more concerned about the 2014 Pirates. Plenty to discuss about that.

  37. theplanisworking says:

Yeah, just think, those kids got to draw their favorite Senior Citizens !

    :D

  38. Reading says:

Plan, I don’t know. Just trying to offer up some alleged humor/fodder/trolling, etc. to join in the fun.

  39. Nate83 says:

There is no way anybody would miss the Ryan Howard one. That drawing is dead on. The kid that drew that is going places. Or at least as far as a struggling artist can go in today’s day and age.

  40. cmat0829 says:

(resting) (spoken in the voice of Brick Heck)

  41. cmat0829 says:

what does a hernia look like …and does it impair the ability to STFD?

  42. cmat0829 says:

    schh-truggg-a-lingggg

Does the drawing of Howard include the huge bags of unearned $$ in the foreground?

  43. theplanisworking says:

    Oh, My bad.
    I honestly didn’t know!

In that case, Good Show !!!! :)

  44. theplanisworking says:

Sends beers and cough drops to cmat at rest. :)

  45. Jim S. says:

    Haha!

  46. cmat0829 says:

it was/ is an amazing game… got to the point where you were just expecting HRs… the one to Votto hurt the most probably… I really thought the umps were gonna make that a walk-off.

  47. Jim S. says:

Fortunately, they were only head shots. We didn’t get to see AJB with an iguanadon hernia.

  48. cmat0829 says:

cue Chris Berman…. “whaaaat… the Phil’s AJ Burnett, he of the “Night of the Iguana”-don hernia…. back-back-back……”

  49. NMR says:

All I’m sayin’ is DO NOT google image that…

  50. NMR says:

    Very cool, plan.

Not ashamed to admit I look forward to the between innings skit where a little kid asks a Bucco player questions. Maybe more than most Pirate at-bats.

  51. NMR says:

Jim S. brings this up a lot, so credit to him, but you really have to wonder what the Pirates offense would be like if they played in a park like GABP or Wrigley.

  52. cmat0829 says:

I like the IPB feature too when the players answer questions… I want more of that, like the more personal nature of that stuff, humanizes the players.

  53. cmat0829 says:

their offense would not look better than their pitching would look worse. (that sounded like either Yogi Berra or Willy Wonka…..’strike that, reverse it’.

  54. Jim S. says:

The look on Bailey’s face a couple of times last night was priceless. He had that “Someone remind me why I signed up to pitch in this place for 6 more years?” look. Then, I’m sure he quickly reminded himself why.

  55. scapper says:

And we have yet another contestant in the “Funniest Post of the Day” sweepstakes. ,

  56. Brandie says:

Greetings all. Hoping the Buccos win st Great American Launching Pad.

  57. Brandie says:

    Or Great American Blast Pad.

  58. scapper says:

Not even game time and I already declare this the funniest set of posts in this blog’s history.

  59. Thundercrack says:

I wonder what was the look on the owner’s and GM’s faces

  60. NMR says:

Didn’t the Buccos hit six homeruns in their last game at GABP of 2013? It was definitely in that series, if not the finale.

    Lambo even got one!

  61. Jim S. says:

    Same look.

  62. Jim S. says:

    Hey, Brandie!

  63. NMR says:

    $$

Oh wait thats Bob and Bill.

  64. Jim S. says:

I think it may have been Saturday. I think I read last night that they are at something like 14 or 15 in the last 2.66666666667 games there.

  65. Reading says:

On a related note, do these other so-called ballparks have “Wine Night?”

  66. Brandie says:

    Hey there Jim-Jam!

  67. Jim S. says:

In some parks, every night is “Whine Night.”

  68. Wild Bill says:

Yahoo Sports is kind enough to have an article on Snider’s “Ground-Face Double”.

  69. scapper says:

Every park and arena in America has “Whine Night.” It’s a promotion that commences as soon as the home team falls behind.

  70. Brandie says:

Sounds like something you get at McDonald’s.

  71. tdb1977 says:

So, there appears to maybe be 200 people at the ball park at the start of the 7th inning!

  72. tdb1977 says:

Is today going to become a bean-ball affair! Wow, was that close to the face.

  73. tdb1977 says:

Maybe not on the slow motion replay.

  74. JohninOshkosh says:

When they show shot from CF camera-no kidding-2 people behind home plate in their parkas and snow caps.

  75. tdb1977 says:

They showed up in the middle of the McCutchen at-bat, when he laced the double down the line.

  76. JohninOshkosh says:

Oh three chicks just got there from work. Now 5 people in CF over the pitcher shot.

  77. JRay3 says:

Too close a pitch to take in that situation. Now need some two out magic from Martin to plate Cutch.

  78. JRay3 says:

And Martin obliges, 8-7 good guys!

  79. tdb1977 says:

Come on Neal. Hit your third one of this game.

  80. JRay3 says:

Hard to believe but this is the 5th time this game the Bucs have taken or retaken a lead. Time for the Shark Tank to close this one out.

  81. JRay3 says:

Last night that ball probably leaves the park.

  82. Thundercrack says:

Excellent reference of The Middle cmat.

  83. Bizrow says:

Lets get a couple more runs

  84. JRay3 says:

    I’ll second that.

  85. JRay3 says:

Couple of positives already from the Top half of the 8th:

Don’t look now, well actually take a peek you may not see it at all rest of the season but Clint Barmes is hitting .300 on the year. Actually, with Mercer mired in a funk would not be surprised if Clint gets a few more starts.

Gaby Sanchez hit another ball off a RHP on the screws, looks to have his swing going.

  86. tdb1977 says:

Its been pretty encouraging to see Gaby swing the bat the way he has against right handed players. Hopefully, he can be the answer at first base if he continues to hit the way he has.

  87. theplanisworking says:

I was asking about you on the Morning thread.
    Howza ya doin’?

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

Not trying to be negative but I have an impending sense of doom about this game. Anyone else ?

  89. theplanisworking says:

Good thing they aren’t using metal bats in this cold.
Need to hold on for a W here.

Then let the icicle bowl commence for game 2.

  90. Bizrow says:

    Yup

  91. JRay3 says:

And Melancon does his job in the 8th following Watson who did his job in the 7th. Just three more outs!

  92. Brandie says:

    Planfred Plan,

I have been made a Project Manager with a buck an hour raise with the potential to make much more. Life, caring kind folks, and this here blog make for great smiles. A Buccos win would be the icing. Good to be here. Great to talk to yinz!

  93. JRay3 says:

Cutch belts the Bucs 14th hit of this game and now five Pirate players with multi-hit games over the course of the two days.

  94. Thundercrack says:

Feel how ever you want to feel Milo.

I don’t sense doom but I hate stranding runners

  95. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Isn’t time to send Pedro to AAA?

  96. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Nahhhhh

  97. Reading says:

This will be a great W!

  98. JRay3 says:

Now maybe the Bucs have some leverage in trying to get a deal done, what can a .160 hitter be worth? I jest.

  99. theplanisworking says:

    Since I am Planfred Plan,
you get to be my Earth Band. ;)

Good to see you in here, Brandimal.

  100. JRay3 says:

It took two days, but the Buccos behind a 14 hit, six HR outburst and three great innings turned in on day two by Watson, Melancon and Grilli who earns his 4th save in 5 tries, sink the Reds 8-7 in the opener of this three game set in Cincinnati and there was nooooooooo doubt about it.

Bryan Morris who did not throw a pitch today will earn his second win of the season. With the victory the Pirates are back above the .500 mark at 7-6 and are currently 3-4 on this nine game road trip.

The Bucs will look to take the series versus the Reds in about a half hour with Gerrit Cole making the start in the regularly scheduled game.

    Go Bucs!

  101. Andrew says:

There you go Bucs, better from Grilli, and don’t mess around with breaking stuff with Hamilton.

  102. JohninOshkosh says:

    ++++++

  103. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I know. If he could only hit his weight at this point

  104. Bizrow says:

    I’m always nervous

    Beat Em Bucs

  105. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Does Gaby start the next game too?

    I think he should.

  106. theplanisworking says:

    ++++++++++

” and there was nooooooooo doubt about it. ”
I want you to do my taxes next year, JRay.
And, there is a future in PR ahead for you. ;)

  107. theplanisworking says:

Here is the irrelevant internet stat of the evening ………

The Royals, as a team, have as many HR’s as Travis Ishikawa…1. Bucs with 18 so far in 2014.
