  2. Nate83 says:

Gaby with another well deserved start. This is most definitely not a normal platoon and Clint is staying true to his word about going with the hot bat. I just find it interesting that Ish got the first try at having the hot bat. I think we saw his best and for that I’m thankful. Gaby is just smashing the ball right now.

  3. Dejan Kovacevic says:

    Nicely done, Laddy!

  4. Jim S. says:

Keep riding him until he shows otherwise.

  5. Jim S. says:

Ok, how many of you guys are going to depress me by saying you are going to the game again tonight?

Looks like beautiful weather in our fair city all weekend.

  6. Jim S. says:

Happy 72nd to Steve Blass! I’ll always be thankful to him for his masterful pitching in that ’71 series, which are some of my earliest baseball memories.

And, I always thought he dealt with his sudden and rapid loss of control that ended his career with a lot of class.

  7. Arriba Wilver says:

  8. Not I said the wolf.

  9. theplanisworking says:

Still not used to seeing Martin in the 2 spot, but when he is, good things seem to happen.

Lets see another 10-0 attempt tonight.
Oh, and Braun really irritates me by breathing my oxygen. ;)

  10. Jim S. says:

Or, I. Corresponding downtrodden yellow face. :-(

  11. theplanisworking says:

    Thanks for this reminder, Jim.
Steve is a life-long Pirate. And a good guy.

Still remember him trying to sell me a class ring when he worked for Jostens. After 10 minutes of storytelling, he said to me “well, looks like I didn’t throw a strike with you either”. He always handled his arm troubles with a little bit of humor. Still feel sorry for him to this day, who knows how good he could have continued to be?

  12. Bizrow says:

    Be depressed tomorrow ;-)

  13. Wild Bill says:

OMG! – a digression: just saw the list of tweets people sent to Mike and Mike today when they were invited to send questions to Mark Emmert! Hilarity could never have been more painful.

Oh, and go Bucs! Avoid the revenge of the Roidin Braun.

  14. Baywatch says:

Or I, BUT Mrs. Bay and I have travel plans set to catch the Cardinals series, May 9-11, JUSTIFIED by our soon-to-be 25th Wedding Anniversary!

  15. Wild Bill says:

Always liked him. Incisive comments with humility – a rare combination.

  16. Jim S. says:

    Enjoy, Biz!!

Well, I at least catch most of them on MLB Extra Innings Pkg.

  17. Lad 9 says:

    My pleasure!

  19. JD says:

Nice post. Steve Blass is great!

  20. Lad 9 says:

I agree Jim. If you haven’t already, read his book. It is a nice read, and he does not spare himself.

  21. Jim S. says:

Yeah, he was literally at the top of his game, plan. But, as I’ve heard him say, “No need to feel sorry for me. How many guys to get to win 100 big league games, and 2 games in the World Series, including the clinching Game 7?”

He’s just always been one of my favorites. I was at a Cubs-Bucs game in Wrigley several years back, and he was looking for a little space in the box seats in the 9th inning as he waited to interview one of the Pirates right after the game. I had good company seats that night, and I remember him asking if he could stoop down next to me in the aisle for a few minutes since I was not the enemy.

  22. bpn8pitt says:

Enjoyed the Martin conversation on the previous thread.

If he isn’t the best catcher in the 2015 class, he’s one of them.

Ripped the signing. Glad I was wrong…It was added to the spreadsheet.

  23. Jim S. says:

I didn’t know about that book, Lad. I’ll look it up.

  24. Jim S. says:

Congrats to you and Mrs. Bay! And, I also wanted to say, it was awfully nice of you to take the time to snap that picture with Mr. Searage. I’m sure he appreciated your thoughtfulness. :-)

  25. Jim S. says:

I went ahead and reduced the font size of the spreadsheet entries. We have a bit more room now. No thanks needed!

  26. theplanisworking says:

    Yeah, it was good conversation.

I might be on an island thinking the Pirates have to re-sign him, or do the QO, but that’s ok. It’s just that the options without Martin are slim to none.

    But, it’s early. ;)

  27. theplanisworking says:

    25th anniversary? CONGRATS !!!

( I will now NOT say the obligatory Old Bay joke) ;)

  28. Baywatch says:

Up here, Plan! :-) Anybody know if Overbay is back from Grandpaternity Leave yet?

  29. theplanisworking says:

    Nope. Beats me.

Maybe they will give him off thru Easter Sunday?
Honestly don’t know how that works. I am sure there are 55 pages devoted to it in the CBA.

  30. Baywatch says:

Last time we were up, we sat behind Mrs. Searage on the plane, Honest Injun! So about the time the guy snapped the picture of Me & Ray I was telling him about it and he says, “Was she talkin’ your fool head off,” or something like that … Honest Injun II, Comin’ To A Theater Near You!

  31. Somebody 50 years old like him havin a child, they ought the give him the rest of the season off.

  32. DJ says:

DK: Saw your Chat description of Pens with 5 best shots. You certainly have a way with adjectives, even those with fourteen hyphens.

Too funny . . . and dead on.

  33. JohninOshkosh says:

PL is 1-3 days. So, he could be back to play after the Easter Bunny has come.

  34. piratemike says:

Nate 83……. see my reply about Wilson on the Travis blog.
(just in case you wasn’t going to revisit the thread)

  35. bpn8pitt says:

Lol. Here I am ripping the Pirates bench, and Root just shows stats the Pirates bench is ranked high offensively.

  36. Karen22 says:

HA! I just used some of that joke on my fish tonight!

  37. JohninOshkosh says:

Who throws out the first pitch tonight ? Trevor Berbick or Buster Douglas ?

  38. JohninOshkosh says:

SNY reporting that Ike Davis has been traded to the Bucs.

  39. JRay3 says:

Don’t know if this has been discussed but Ike Davis is a Pirate, there is your first baseman.

  40. Brandie says:

    Lyle Olduvai.

  41. JRay3 says:

RHP Zach Thornton and player to be named for Ike Davis.

Kudos to NH for waiting it out and not giving up a top prospect, well played.

  42. JohninOshkosh says:

    Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 8m

Ike Davis trade agreed to with pirates

  43. JohninOshkosh says:

Yeah, this is a good deal. Ike can go deep and didn’t cost much for him.

  44. Jim S. says:

Nope. I’m there with you, plan. That’s why I started that Martin thread.

  45. JRay3 says:

No doubt, plus Bucs get three years if control.

Appears management is all in and they even made the move in April to boot.

I give NH this he is shrewd.

  46. Jim S. says:

    Well played, indeed.

I do like Thornton, and feel he’s going to be pretty good. But, I like the Davis deal.

  47. The Gunner says:

    Ike Davis is a Bucco

  48. JohninOshkosh says:

What will be the corresponding 25 man transaction, do you figure?

  49. JMB says:

    I like Ike,

  50. The Gunner says:

    Ishikawa is history

  51. JMB says:

When we get Polanco up in June, this team should have a punchers chance!

  52. JohninOshkosh says:

Yep. You are right. That’s the move, Gunner.

  53. JRay3 says:

    Travis Ishikawa is a goner.

  54. theplanisworking says:

  55. JohninOshkosh says:

I was in the minority this winter, but I wanted Ike. Glad he is here. Lots of upside on the kid, especially with change of scenery. Don’t know how he will pan out ultimately, but as a strictly at the moment of trade analysis, Neal was pretty shrewd with this one.

  56. theplanisworking says:

    Hazardous Duty Pay, Reverend?

  57. JohninOshkosh says:

Yep. Posted before thinking about it. Good call J and Gunner.

  58. Barb says:

So what is the upside to getting Ike Davis. I admit I’m not that familiar with him even though several have talked about signing him.

  59. theplanisworking says:

  60. theplanisworking says:

New thread up for the Ike Davis trade ==================>

  61. Stuart says:

Any thoughts on the level of the PTBNL?

I like it. Kudos to Neal for the wait out.

  62. Milo Hamilton says:

Tells you what they really think of Andrew Lambo.

  63. The Gunner says:

Maybe Ishikawa will be the PTBNL

  64. JohninOshkosh says:

  65. Barb says:

    Okay Gomez…..temper, temper!!!

  66. JRay3 says:

Former Top 100 prospect who hit .264 with 19 HR’s as a rookie. Belted 32 HR’s in 2012 even though he battled valley fever. Has battled some nagging injuries last season and in the spring of this year.

Potential for some upside in addition to very good power, plus change of scenery could be good for him.

Against RHP .256 with 56 HR’s and 212 RBI, good fit for what Bucs need.

  67. Milo Hamilton says:

Once again don’t listen to what they say, watch what they do.

  68. Barb says:

Thanks Planimal I will check it out! So Ishikawa or Lambo are toast.

  69. Brandie says:

    Like Ike.

If I Could Be Like Ike!

    Drink Trade N Aid!

  70. theplanisworking says:

Davis should do well with the short RF in PNC.
Don’t have a clue about his defense.

  71. JRay3 says:

They might still believe in the bat at some point, but they don’t think he can play first is what it signals to me. Appears at this point he could be a potential 4th OF in this organization if he stays.

  72. Brandie says:

  73. Barb says:

Hey Brandecita. How are things in your neck of the woods? I have keeping tabs and sounds like the new job is going swimmingly!

  74. Andrew says:

This is important because Thronton was Rule 5 eligible during the winter, so it might be a significant piece.

  75. Brandie says:

Only time will tell. The trade intrigues me as who becomes the odd man out?

    Good Evening Plan Majerle!

  76. Barb says:

Okay thanks JRay. Hope he will be good fit.

  77. Barb says:

That should be “been” keeping tabs……

  78. Brandie says:

It is. Such a good environment. It is good to see you Barbados!

  79. JohninOshkosh says:

Why isn’t Marte at second. Was he dogging it?

  80. JRay3 says:

Nice to see the Brewers picking up right where they left off from last night.

  81. JohninOshkosh says:

    Irrelevant now. lol

    Marte given a hit…..ridiculous.

  82. JRay3 says:

Wasn’t busting it down the line, but still not sure he makes it if he was.

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

Something about home runs. Welcome to baseball in 2014. With all the computer generated defensive positioning, batting averages are falling. It’s getting harder & harder to manufacture runs one at a time. If you want to score you really need to hit the ball out of the park, more so now than ever. Small ball is still important & the teams that can execute have a big advantage. But I also think the good fashioned home run may be even more valuable than before.

  84. JohninOshkosh says:

    PBC 1
    Bad News Bears 0

  85. JRay3 says:

Very astute observation, I also think this could change the way hitters are developed in the minors as players who can show the ability to hit to all fields and take the defensive shifts out of the equation will have a lot of value.

Really think that has become a lost art form amongst hitters today.

  86. theplanisworking says:

    Happy Good Friday to you.

Plan Marjle was one of my faves.
He could hit the 3 from the upper concourse.

  87. Milo Hamilton says:

We were kicking this around today, as a rule I bet the guys that end up in the top 10 in batting average don’t see shifts.

  88. Baywatch says:

Marte stood in the box about a good 3 seconds watching the popup before he ran.

  89. The Gunner says:

Maybe Lambo is the PTBNL. He is pretty much blocked with the Buccos.

  90. Andrew says:

Batting averages failing has more to do with the increase in strikeouts, with as much as the shifting gets discussed/written about the league wide BABIP has hovered around .300 since 1994.

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

My optimal 2nd base platoon would be Scooter Gennett & Darwin Barney.

  92. Milo Hamilton says:

Oh yeah, that came up too. Notice the guys that get shifted strikeout a ton too. You can see we had a very productive day today. :)

  93. piratemike says:

Talk about Homers……. watching to the Brewers telecast ,instead of talking about a 3 stooges play by the Brewers they started talking about the awful base running of Marte saying he should have been on 2nd.
I thought MSNBC was doing the

  94. Barb says:

I’m glad to be here. Last couple of days have been crazy. I am now officially on vacation so I will be around more frequently than I have.

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

I think that batting averages didn’t explode like home runs during the steroid era because everyone was swinging for the downs and striking out more as a result.

  96. JohninOshkosh says:

Speaking of Barney. The North Siders are in for a rough year. I think they lose 100 in the 100th year of Wrigley Field.

  97. JohninOshkosh says:

I think I was happier when I didn’t know what BAPIP and WAR meant. :)

    Just kidding, Andrew. Interesting stat.

  98. Brandie says:

I will take ridiculous, as long as it is in our favor…Johnny Dangerously!

  99. Brandie says:

    Happy vacation Barb!

  100. Milo Hamilton says:

Maldonado goes down the next time up.

  101. JRay3 says:

Hope Maldanado wears one later, those spikes went in high, totally dirty.

  102. JRay3 says:

No doubt he kicked right through Mercer’s leg.

  103. Brandie says:

Happy Good Friday to you Oh Majestic Hippo Majerle!

  104. JohninOshkosh says:

Yep. Surprised Walker and Alvarez weren’t in his grill immediately.

  105. JohninOshkosh says:

    Underrated flick.

  106. JohninOshkosh says:

Marte’s hit changed to an error on Reynolds, for those of you keeping score at home.

  107. JohninOshkosh says:

Mercer appears to be a bit gimpy with his running. Hope it doesn’t swell into something bigger.

  108. Andrew says:

A few more numbers and I am done, but there was a good article in the Hardball Times Annual and it found that of the 20 most shifted players (all LHH or switch) their BABIP was lowered by .037 points on average. Pedro was one of those but his BABIP was actually higher with the shift on, so sometimes results vary.

  109. Milo Hamilton says:

Sure, I go into my well thought out home run dissertation & we decide to play 1981 Oakland A’s Billyball (with a little help from the ’62 Mets in the field). I guess Bobby Bragan said it best, “If I score 1 every inning, you need 10 to beat me.”

  110. Andrew says:

    Brewers are Collapsing.

  111. JRay3 says:

    As JohninOshkosh pointed out earlier:

    Bucs 2
    Ban News Bears 0

Boy they botched that Martin hit on so many levels….not complaining.

  112. Arriba Wilver says:

  113. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m going to dust off the buttons.

  114. Milo Hamilton says:

That was great, not good, great pitching.

  115. Arriba Wilver says:

    Nice observation,

  116. Arriba Wilver says:

  117. Milo Hamilton says:

That can be a big turning point right there, especially if the Brewers can post a number this inning.

  118. Andrew says:

That could have been worse, but not good and not over yet.

  119. Milo Hamilton says:

A walk & a hit batter on an 0-2 pitch pretty much handed them those 3 runs.

  120. Florida Steeler says:

We load the bases with our two sluggers batting and we get a big 0, Brewers load bases with Scooter up and they score 3. Something wrong with that scenario.

  121. Jim S. says:

I don’t think I quite carry the venom for the Brewers generally that many here do. But, consider me a convert – starting with Maldonado. That was a dirty slide, and I don’t think it will or should be forgotten.

I like the Ike deal. I’m a bit hesitant on this talk of a “significant” PTBNL, though. But, maybe significant by PTBNL standards won’t be all that much. Could be a draft pick, per Tim Williams. He said that was total speculation, though.

That was an awful inning by Charlie.

  122. JohninOshkosh says:

Kyle Lohse was a good signing for the Crew. Not an ace, but a pretty good fighter and competitor.

  123. Andrew says:

Agreed I typed that as Davis was getting thrown out at home, absurd swing going from base loaded one out, to down a run in the next half inning.

  124. JohninOshkosh says:

What draft choices can be traded in MLB-can you refresh my memory. I don’t view PP’s site. :)

  125. JohninOshkosh says:

Brewers are set at short, center and right for a few years.

  126. Andrew says:

I hate the Brewers and dislike Gomez.

  127. Milo Hamilton says:

    Another tremendous effort by Charlie.

  128. Brandie says:

Agreeing the pitching needs to be more consistent. I think the Brewers got too big for their britches and that whole thing with Ryan Braun was annoying.

    Super Fly Jimmy Snuka!

  129. jm says:

I don’t think the slid was that bad. I mean, your spikes can’t be kept pointing straight to the ground, or else … you couldn’t slide.

  130. jm says:

Is Steve Blass becoming a little … embarrassing?

  131. Milo Hamilton says:

Speculation is that it’s someone drafted last year. You can’t be traded until a year after you’re drafted.

  132. Andrew says:

Morton needs to get some of that sunscreen and rosin mixture because he cannot grip anything right now.

  133. Milo Hamilton says:

Two hit batsmen on 0-2 pitches.

  134. Is that sarcasm Milo? Haven’t followed the game. That’s a serious Q.

  135. Florida Steeler says:

    His babbling sometimes becomes incessant.

  136. Never mind. I get it.

  137. Milo Hamilton says:

    Why is Morton batting ?

  138. Florida Steeler says:

We would have to ask Clint–it must be in the book!!!!

  139. Jim S. says:

    Same thing I heard.

  140. Carlos Danger says:

Borrow some “dirt” from Michael Pineda.

  141. Arriba Wilver says:

Because he was the first batter in the inning?

  142. Andrew says:

I know the strike zone has expanded by there was not pitch in the zone during that Marte AB, but two called strikes.

  143. Jim S. says:

    Apparently everybody doesn’t do that.

  144. JohninOshkosh says:

    Gotcha. Thanks.

  145. Arriba Wilver says:

It was dirty. As DK mentioned earlier about the NHL, MLB should review plays like this for fines.

  146. Arriba Wilver says:

  147. JohninOshkosh says:

Just remember. Roenicke never met a complete game or deep run by a starting pitcher he liked in his life. Big pitch count guy and conservation of starting pitchers.

Get into their iffy bullpen…at least it was iffy going into the year…and give yourself a chance.

  148. The Gunner says:

We’ll see if Charlie can hold the Brewers down in the 6th. He is definitely not on his game tonight.

  149. Carlos Danger says:

That was another disappointing at bat for Pedro. 2 in a row.

  150. Jim S. says:

Ump show in full bloom tonight, complete with the 1 second delay for effect. At least, he’s butchering it both ways.

Pedro has left 5 on base in the last 2 ABs. Plenty of time left. I still have a good feeling about a late blast from someone.

  151. Jandy says:

  152. Jim S. says:

But, they are supposed to be pointed at the base.

  153. Dave G says:

Knocked the cover off the ball?

You have got to be kidding me.

  154. scapper says:

Anyone remember when Dave Parker did to a ball one night? Looked just like that.

  155. Milo Hamilton says:

They’re knocking the cover off it against Morton tonight.

  156. theplanisworking says:

    Maybe Martin?

  157. Milo Hamilton says:

That ball is going to show up on the Bob Nutting Auction this summer.

  158. Baywatch says:

I know he’s come a long way between developing the sinker and the Tommy John surgery, but sometimes I feel like Charlie’s still overcoming a loser mindset … PEDRO! Lighten up a LITTLE, Dude! The straight face with the unwound ball rolls to him! What’s it going to TAKE for this boy!

  159. Jandy says:

I’ve never seen that happen before.

  160. Jandy says:

    Nice snag by Barmes

  161. Jandy says:

    I don’t remember and I’m old ;)

  162. JohninOshkosh says:

Two out runs by opponents, I do not love thee.

  163. JohninOshkosh says:

    Worst telecast of the year.

  164. Arriba Wilver says:

I mentioned earlier that his velocity has been off almost as much as Juan D’s, but it hasn’t gotten any attention.

  165. Arriba Wilver says:

Only until Tim’s next one. :-)

  166. Baywatch says:

    Down here, John :-(

  167. Arriba Wilver says:

We’re going to hear “hit the cover off the ball” for the rest of the game,

  168. theplanisworking says:

    I remember that.

But I don’t remember what I had for dinner last night.
    Seriously. :(

  169. JohninOshkosh says:

I’ll be the lone wolf. I don’t mind Tim. Great broadcasting voice at least.

  170. Milo Hamilton says:

That’ll be June 10th, thanks Tim. Sorry I brought it up.

  171. Andrew says:

Like JohninOskKosh says getting into the middle relief is the Pirates best chance but Lohse is not even at 90 pitches.

  172. theplanisworking says:

    Thanks for the heads up.
I will mark my calendar accordingly.

  173. Milo Hamilton says:

    Oh, Hi Frank.

  174. JohninOshkosh says:

I’ve got the Brewers guys. Their main guy is off doing the NBA. They have the voice of the Badgers doing the games. Never has done baseball. Doing a good job, but I’m biased by his college work. :)

  175. jm says:

I saw Roy Hobbs do it.

  176. Jandy says:

    Go get ‘em Stormy!

  177. scapper says:

Deja vu moment for sure. Ump held up the ball smiling just like tonight. Think it was in St. Louis or Shea…pretty sure it was old Busch.

  178. JohninOshkosh says:

    “Down here.”

But “Up Here on the “Honest Injin” references today. That’s “Good Gravy” territory, Bay.

  179. scapper says:

    “That’s not a ball…we want a REAL ball!”

  180. The Gunner says:

    Bring back that sunny day!

  181. jm says:

Agreed. And Tim’s broadcast partner is … not good.

  182. theplanisworking says:

If they had a “Frank’s DD for a night”, I would bid.

  183. Milo Hamilton says:

Speaking of velocity, Stolmy has been lacking about 4 or 5 mph’s the last couple times out.

  184. Jandy says:

THAT was a nice snag, Petey :)

  185. jm says:

A great moment in fake sports history.

  186. Jandy says:

    Tell em Gunner!

  187. Jandy says:

    Good job, Stormy!

  188. Andrew says:

I wonder if there is an underlining injury.

  189. JohninOshkosh says:

Life is bare, gloom and mis’ry everywhere
    Stolmy weather
Just can’t get my poorself together,
    I’m weary all the time
    So weary all the time
When he went away the blues walked in and met me.
If he stays away old rockin’ chair will get me.

  190. Milo Hamilton says:

Unless the starting pitching picks up all the Ike Davises in the world won’t amount to a hill of beans.

  191. Jandy says:

    Play it again, Sam!

  192. Milo Hamilton says:

Heard it by Etta James today.

  193. The Gunner says:

The starting pitching wasn’t too good at this point in 2013 either. Nevertheless, I share your concern, Milo.

  194. Baywatch says:

    LOL, Gun!

  195. JohninOshkosh says:

Tyler Thornburg in the pen for the Brewers.

That’s the guy the Metsies wanted for Ike Davis this winter.

  196. Baywatch says:

Hey, Milo! I’m ‘onna give you a +++ for that! Very true!

  197. jm says:

No score in Red Wings v. Bruins but Detroit has been the better team so far. Interesting.

  198. Andrew says:

That is homerun at about every other park.

  199. Milo Hamilton says:

    Hey Bay & Ray.

  200. jm says:

Anyone know how to put an avatar n these things? I put jpg addresses on the “website” line but .. nothin’.

  201. JohninOshkosh says:

Won’t shock me in the least if the Wings take that series. Babcock.

  202. Baywatch says:

Maybe they will listen now, my Friend (cue some “Casablanca” music here).

  203. jm says:

The man knows his hockey, no doubt.

  204. JohninOshkosh says:

    Go to

Register and follow directions. So easy I did it.

  205. Carlos Danger says:

C’mon boys! Finally a sign of life.

  206. Arriba Wilver says:

  207. Milo Hamilton says:

How does Marte not score there ?

  208. theplanisworking says:

Aaron Harang with a no-hitter through 7 against the Mets.

  209. Arriba Wilver says:

Wow, that’s huge! I wonder if it’s a side effect of Ray’s magic. (That’s a total joke about Ray)

  210. JohninOshkosh says:

Are we supposed to be commenting on the game here or on the Ike trade thread. I’m confused. :)

  211. Carlos Danger says:

I wonder if they would have sent him if he would have represented the tying run? We still would have needed another one anyways and he would have been the 3rd out if the attempt failed.

  212. The Gunner says:

    That’s your buddy Levya

  213. Milo Hamilton says:

Easily the most frustrating game of the year.

  214. JohninOshkosh says:

Wasn’t intended as a reply. Sorry. I’m an idiot.

  215. Baywatch says:

    He changed my LIFE!

  216. The Gunner says:

    And our other buddy K-dro

  217. Carlos Danger says:

Dude. C’mon Pedro. That was the 3rd opportunity tonight to hit runner(s) in scoring position home and the 3rd fail.

  218. Wild Bill says:

Third base coach put up a stop sign.

  219. cobra39 says:

    El Toro….bummer.

  220. Jandy says:

I actually asked that question out loud

  221. Arriba Wilver says:

It would be the first time, my friend, but I ain’t complaining. As long as I can say what I think without being accused of having nefarious motives and multiple personalities I’m cool. Oh, wait . . .

  222. JRay3 says:

Yep, no doubt. Alvarez has left 7 men on base tonight alone. Team just not getting the big hit when the opportunity is there.

  223. Jandy says:

    Happy Easter, AW :)

  224. Patrick(ri) says:

Don’t see how he could take that pitch.

  225. Milo Hamilton says:

Tomorrow is the 35th anniversary of the Pirates trading Frank Taveras to the Mets for Tim Foli. Let’s hope this latest deal with the Mets has the same effect.

  226. Baywatch says:

Times like these … I wouldn’t care if Pedro had FIFTEEN homers, let’s bust’im back to Indy and leave him there until he REALLY learns to hit! :-(

  227. JRay3 says:

That’s the pitch he needs to be able to flick into left field, which would have accomplished just what team needed in that situation.

  228. Carlos Danger says:

Wait. Did someone hit the cover off the ball? I have a bad memory. Luckily these guys will remind me again 30 seconds from now.

  229. Patrick(ri) says:

Or at least “protect” the plate — a skill he seems devoid of.

  230. Baywatch says:

Was that Frank “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel” Taveras? Oh, that was Tavares! :-)

  231. Arriba Wilver says:

Stolmy’s started rough, but he’s been pretty good.

  232. Arriba Wilver says:

  233. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m so glad they’re fixated on that and not the fact that the same guy tried to amputate someone’s leg three innings earlier.

  234. Arriba Wilver says:

I have a feeling Tim will be using it for weeks.

  235. Arriba Wilver says:

  236. Baywatch says:

  237. Arriba Wilver says:

  238. Arriba Wilver says:

I can’t verify it, but I loved that deal the day it was made. Never a Taveas fan, but loved Foli.

  239. Arriba Wilver says:

  240. Arriba Wilver says:

Or Taveras, they both stunk. ;-)

  241. The Gunner says:

Your boy Harrison got another pinch hit, Milo

  242. Brandie says:

Seems like a seething cauldron of inconsistency tonight. Gotta work more on the situational hitting.

    Good Evening Yinz!

  243. Jandy says:

Is that your boye, Milo? :)

  244. Milo Hamilton says:

That Marte non run is about killing them right now. The one time one of these guys actually listens to a coach.

  245. Jandy says:

    Hey Hey, Sistah Brandie :)

  246. JRay3 says:

Can Ishikawa give the Pirates a final parting gift?

  247. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m sure Ishikawa’s in a great frame of mind right now.

  248. Arriba Wilver says:

    Some bells can’t be unrung.

But Happy Easter to all believers.

  249. Milo Hamilton says:

    I am a fan, yes.

  250. The Gunner says:

I guess we’ll always remember Ishikawa how he went out

  251. Milo Hamilton says:

Maybe we can raise the jolly roger on the sands of Ishikawa ?

  252. cobra39 says:

Red Wings 1 Bruins 0, 3:00 left. Datsuyk great goal.

  253. Patrick(ri) says:

Damn, the bases are loaded. . .

  254. Brandie says:

Good to see you fellow Project Manager! I wonder how the Ike Davis Project will turn out? Some upside at a a small price.

  255. Jandy says:

I’m optimistic about it after most of what I’ve seen here on this blog :)

  256. JRay3 says:

Chance after chance after chance and just continue to come up empty.

  257. Jandy says:

How many have the Bucs left on base tonight?

  258. Patrick(ri) says:

Earlier they said Walker hits 400+, and Pedro hits 351 — the rest of the team must hit 000!

  259. The Gunner says:

Ishikawa will probably clear waivers and end up in Indy platoon in with Matt Hague

  260. Carlos Danger says:

This is so frustrating to watch. I feel like a glutton for punishment by keeping it on.

  261. Jim S. says:

    Pedro alone – 7.

If they don’t pull this out, it will be a really tough loss. Milw has tried to throw the game away with it’s defense and bullpen. But, so far, the Bucs won’t take the hint.

  262. Jandy says:

Include me in the fan club.

  263. Jim S. says:

I was thinking the same exact thing, Milo. Tough spot for him. And, he got blown away on 3 pitches.

  264. Jandy says:

    loved that SO…good job Wilson!

  265. Florida Steeler says:

And, his new replacement is hitting a whopping .203!!!!

  266. Andrew says:

Marte hit three infield flyballs all of last year. And with Brendan Shanahan hired by Toronto I am not sure who is head of supplementary discipline but Maldonado deserves at least a phone call.

  267. Jandy says:

Thanks Jim, that’s just brutal :/

  268. Carlos Danger says:

Thanks for finding the silver lining to this frustrating game!

  269. Jim S. says:

Foli was the perfect player for that ’79 team.

  270. theplanisworking says:

    Wings 1
    Broonz 0

    Fear the Babcock.

  271. JohninOshkosh says:

Careful here. Braun feeds on moments like this.

  272. The Gunner says:

    Nice tag by Jay Hay

  273. Jandy says:

    Now, THAT was sweet!

  274. Florida Steeler says:

Final–1-0 Detroit. Wish we had Babcock.

  275. Jim S. says:

    Got PNC’d.

  276. JohninOshkosh says:

    Bruins were Babcock blocked.

  277. Polanco 3-5 again tonight with 3 more RBI. Has 16 now. Only hitting .439 though. Has much to work on in how to hold his mouth and do the “yes, yes, yes” thing. And like DK said in the chat, why waste 15 grand? It would be the height of irresponsibility. Who cares about 2014 anyway?

And BTW, Travis “he isn’t the problem” Snider is down to his normal .222 BA in a small sample size.

  278. Jandy says:

    I’ll second that!

  279. Milo Hamilton says:

Thought he fed on testosterone laced gummies.

  280. Arriba Wilver says:

    He’s the best.

  281. Andrew says:

Penguins already have a coach with one Stanley Cup and bunch of regular season wins.

  282. Arriba Wilver says:

You’re incorrigible, Rev. And on Easter weekend. ;-)

  283. JohninOshkosh says:

That was consciously put on the tee by me.

And, my man Milo, ripped it straight down the fairway.

  284. Jandy says:

    Pour it on, SPunkster!

  285. :D

I’ve been trained in sarcasm for 61+ years, AW. Well trained.

  286. Jandy says:

    bahahahaha Priceless you two!

  287. Milo Hamilton says:

Oh goody, another chance for the guys that make all the money to not come through.

  288. The Gunner says:

But at least he looks like he is in shape this year versus how he looked in that clip of him from 2013 they showed earlier

  289. Carlos Danger says:

This is probably a better subject for the other message board, but I feel like Ike Davis = Adam Laroche version 2.0. I realize he will be an improvement over ishikawa (hopefully) but does anyone have a really good feeling about the move?

  290. Jandy says:

Russ’ shaggy beard is growing on me….
    wait…that doesn’t sound quite right.,..

  291. The Gunner says:

Looks like Pedro will get a chance to redeem himself

  292. Carlos Danger says:

    This is setting up perfectly.

  293. Jandy says:

    lol Gunner,what a difference eh?

  294. Arriba Wilver says:

It’s not the voice, John, it’s what he does with it. :-). :-). :-)

  295. Jandy says:

Do I have to hold my breath? ;)

  296. The Gunner says:

    Get the rosary beads out

  297. Milo Hamilton says:

    There’s one of ‘em.

  298. JRay3 says:

I like his career .852 OPS against RHP, given Gaby mashes LHP think this move certainly is an upgrade.

  299. JohninOshkosh says:

Both coaches have their teams up 1-0 as well.

  300. Jandy says:

    ahhhh crap!

  301. Jandy says:

Hey Laddie, how are ya?? Thanks for the line-up ^^ there!

  302. Arriba Wilver says:

  303. Jandy says:

    Revvie, prayer time!

  304. Milo Hamilton says:

    And the second.

  305. cobra39 says:

Wow. Thought Pedro had a double there.

  306. The Gunner says:

    We need you……NOW!!!

  307. Andrew says:

It is kind of classic Huntington, former 1st round pick, so there is talent there. NMR will tell that Davis has a huge hitch in his swing, but he has hit RHP better than league average even last year when he was terrible.

  308. Lad 9 says:

Hanging in there Jandy. Rough work week. I had the same day at work yesterday as you had on the blog. Good to see you and before I forget, Happy Easter!

  309. cobra39 says:

    Home plate ump sucks.

  310. JohninOshkosh says:

K-Rod’s girlfriend awaits nervously in the stadium tunnel.

  311. Milo Hamilton says:

And goodnight Mary Edgerley wherever you are.

  312. cobra39 says:

Wow. Thought Neil had a double there. But I repeat myself.

  313. JRay3 says:

Fitting end to this one, Pirates sting a few balls but get nothing out of it. Left far too many chances out there tonight. At some point team needs to get on a run, just no consistency in the first 17 games.

Starting pitching is the key and between Liraino, Morton and Rodriguez not a win amongst them, that has to change.

  314. The Gunner says:

Holy Toledo, Milo – you stole my line. However, the Bucs earned this one.

  315. Jandy says:

    Thanks, and you too :)
    Misery loves company…glad I wasn’t alone…

  316. Jim S. says:

That’s a questionable Brewers bullpen. Plenty of balls smoked. Unfortunately, mostly right at Brewers fielders. I’m not sure the high wire act is going to work all year. Maybe that’s why they keep signing guys left and right.

What a weird game. Runs given up when seams split on balls. Plenty of bad ABs with runners in scoring position. Hard hit balls right at people. Timely Brewers hits. Plenty of bad fielding.

    Go get ‘em tomorrow, Bucs.

  317. Baywatch says:

  318. Jandy says:

    Oh, I’m a believer, all right :)

  319. Jim S. says:

How does the ump keep his job after that ball and strike calling performance, both ways, tonight?

  320. Jim S. says:

He ain’t perfect, but I find it hard to believe he isn’t better than Ishikawa.

  321. theplanisworking says:

    It’s called a union.

    Good night, Gracie.

  322. Jim S. says:

That’s funny stuff, Lucky! Happy Easter, my friend! Put a good word in for the Bucs at Sunday services, please. Or, should I say “pleas?”

Happy Easter to everyone else on here as well.

  323. Jandy says:

Happy Easter to you too, Jimster :)

  324. Arriba Wilver says:

  325. The Gunner says:

Yep, TS was built like a middle aged guy who played in a beer league.

  326. Andrew says:

    Most certainly.

  327. Bizrow says:

    Happy holidays folks.

Not just one faith, blessings and good tidings to all

  328. Carlos Danger says:

Well put, and right back at ya!

  329. Jandy says:

    Thanks, Biz, you too :*

  330. Thundercrack says:

    The figure was $15 million.

  331. Jandy says:

    ahhh..details! ;)

  332. Arriba Wilver says:

Huh? I wasn’t questioning your faith, just like I wouldn’t question anyone’s faith.

    Can’t win for losing apparently.

  333. Jandy says:

I didn’t say you questioned it, don’t assume that, my friend :)

  334. Jim S. says:

Yeah, I left that part out. ;-)

  335. Arriba Wilver says:

You do realize that overusing emoticons kind of exposes that they aren’t sincere, right? :-) :-) :-)

  336. Jandy says:

That’s your opinion, my friend :)

  337. Jim S. says:

    And, to you, Jandy!

  338. Arriba Wilver says:

” my friend” also gets the same effect when insincere. We aren’t friends, friends can tell each other the truth, without judgment.

  339. Jandy says:

Oh, you’re my friend, all right AW, I’ll never lose sight of that, dear :)

You make sure of it :)

  340. Arriba Wilver says:

    The line is drawn.

  341. Jandy says:

    Gonna call it a night…sweet dreams everyone…

  342. Jandy says:

    screw your line….
    love is better than war…

    sweet dreams, friend :)

  343. Arriba Wilver says:

This should be fun, except for others.

  344. Arriba Wilver says:
