  1. BillyBaduka says:

And, I’m going to the game!

  2. Sarah says:

Niiiice!!!!! Make some NOISE and liven that place up!!!!!

  3. Sarah says:

So Peeps, any thoughts on the Lucic cup-check?

  4. Sarah says:

    Here it is

    I’m not even a guy and I grabbed my….something….LOL!!!

Anyway….I hope he gets a lengthy suspension, but odds are he gets a slap on the wrist fine. Cos this is the NHl, after all. MAN I hate the Bruins.

Jandster, here’s your cue to totally go off on

    Have at it!!!!!

  5. Rbilak says:

Mike. “Adolph” Milbury feels Milan Lucic’s action a result of Orpik not fighting Thorton. Bettman looks to suspend Orpik for the Cup a Check. Most in “Boston Wrong” feel justified. 5k for CrotchChecking. Lucic comments show what a Neanderthal he is, “Seven years only did it 3times”, “Don’t know why I did it” “Heat of the moment”. Hmmm, what Cooke and Ulf did outrage them but Milan and Marchand get passes? Go Red Wings!

    Now after the rant,

    1. Will “Meadowlark” Letang settle down? Stempy’s, Orpik and Scuderi called him out. I could care less what Letang said, he has said it before and still plays a selfish, undisciplined game. He needs to earn powerplay time not be given it.

    2. Once again Scuderi over Bortuzzo will hurt, R.J.will park in front of net.

    3. PK needs to pick it up.

    4. Interesting tickets remain, unlike some announcers, it is because fans don’t believe in team, not due to not knowing they are available.

    5. Gibbons, have not Ben a fan, but I will say who is giving a better effort to replace him? I like him on PK better than Adams.

  6. theplanisworking says:

I read one of the Boston papers this morning before my lengthy walk, and they actually defended this! They said it was the playoffs, and all was fair, and actually, it was a good way to ‘throw the Wings off their game’.

But, this was the same paper that defended Thornton’s assault of Orpik also, so nice to see the Neanderthal Goons have a media outlet.

If this was Neal, or Cooke, the suspension would be severe.
Because it is one of Jeremy Jacobs boys, nothing will happen.

Need to sweep these guys out, so rest is plenty for the next round!!
Malkin needs to SCIRE!! (For you, Brandie, wherever you iz) :)

  7. scapper says:

Got fined five grand. Yes, you read that right. Can’t remember what Quenneville got fined for grabbing his own damn self in the same area, but I know it was more. Please…someone…explain the NHL’s logic on this one.

  8. theplanisworking says:

    GO PENS!!!!!

  9. theplanisworking says:

    Quenneville got fined $25,000.
Lucic got $5,000? That is all?

Jandy has the appropriate avatar for the league ……

Scapper, you one funny dude. :)

  10. Sarah says:

This is why the NHL will continue to be a sideshow.
Never taken seriously as a major sport.

    Real shame.

  11. Sarah says:

And y’know Peeps, we should tip our hat to the Detroit Red Wings and Mike Babcock.

That coach has that team SO disciplined. I mean, SO disciplined, they just stuck to their gameplan, kept skating, did not retaliate, knew they were faster than Boston, and they were justly rewarded in the end.

Really, the gap in discipline between the Wings and Pens is pretty clear. I hope our Birds can close it fast, cos they will need to.

  12. theplanisworking says:

Doesn’t anyone in the league office think of how this affects the advertisers? The casual fan?

Just amazingly bad PR ‘smarts’ in the league cave ………. errr office …….

  13. Sarah says:

Jack Edwards blamed it on Matt Cooke.

  14. Sarah says:

I guess not. The league is not to be taken seriously esp not by the casual fan.

  15. DJ says:

Last time I checked, Blues up 2-0 on Chitown.

I know the Blues slowed down the stretch but that team scares me the most out west.

  16. theplanisworking says:

    Good point Sarah.

The Pens opponents know that they can easily throw the Pens off their system, and make them lose their minds. Every team in the playoffs will do that/try to do that.

If the Pens would just ignore that stuff, and bury PP goals that would result, the opponents wouldn’t try that stuff anymore.

  17. scapper says:

What would the fine be if we had a melding of the two acts and a player or coach grabs the crotch of an opponent? Right in the middle, 15 grand? Crazy.

  18. Wild Bill says:

I’ve been an octave higher all day just from the video.

  19. theplanisworking says:

The Blues and Avs scare me the most.

The Sharks and Ducks will probably pull their yearly el-foldo in the playoffs.
If the ‘Hawks can come back in this series, they would scare me also.

Will be interesting to see how Roy leads his team in the playoffs.
He has a history of meltdowns behind the bench.

But, I want the Pens to take care of business first and foremost.

  20. theplanisworking says:

No, they might have had an ice cream social at center ice …… and I am serious about that (ok, just a little) …..

  21. Wild Bill says:

A really nasty, physical game with the Hawks playing the part of the retaliating Pens.

  22. DJ says:

  23. Sarah says:

NHL a Sideshow (again) ; Boston cheers!

  24. Andrew says:

If I had more energy I would go into a rant about the NHL’s main goal is to provide an employment for displaced sons of Canadian farmers, but I’ll spare you.

I see Lucic do something like this every time I watch Boston play, the NHL apparently is fine with the behavior, and shows little sign of changing, most sports leagues are insular. There was a fairly good GIF of all of Dubinsky cheap shots on Crosby from game one. I watch hockey for skill level combined with the control violence, not cheap shots and fights.

  25. DJ says:

For trying to rip a new B-hole.

  26. Andrew says:

Detroit had the 4th most power plays against this year, the Pens were 22nd, but I get what you are saying certain players have taken numerous retaliatory penalties.

  27. DJ says:

I think the Avs will be tough too, Plan. I give the nod to the Blues only because of experience. Adding Miller and Ott just added to it.

Still, a very long way to go.

  28. Sarah says:

Honestly, I hope DET gets up 3-0 and is winning by a handful in the last minute of G4, and somebody just does to Lucic/Chara/Marchand exactly what they do to everybody else.

That is what it is going to come to, unfortunately.
The league has proven over and over again it will NOT police this stuff, so the teams and players will ultimately police themselves.

I hope DET gets the opp to do so. They gave the league it’s chance and Bettman didn’t take it.

  29. Sarah says:

Well, it’s 2-1…..I’m rooting for CHI. Just hate Hitchcock…..

  30. Sarah says:

    Oh, goodness Andrew!
Nut shots on Sid is merely “playoff hockey!”

    Didn’t you hear?

  31. theplanisworking says:

What I hope for most is that the Blues, ‘Hawks, Sharks, Ducks and Avs all beat each other up.

That would even the field with the Eastern Conference a little.

  32. Wild Bill says:

Best we can hope for is a seven gamer with three or four triple overtimes.

  33. Sarah says:

I think you have that backwards, Andrew.
DET with 4th least PIM this year reg season.

  34. Andrew says:

I am going by power plays against or time short handed, the Penguins are in the bottom 1/3 of the league, Detroit top 1/3. Fighting majors skew penalty minutes.

  35. Andrew says:

I love playing 82 games under one set of rules and the playoffs another.

  36. Andrew says:

Here is the link, obviously there is more to discipline, not taking retaliatory penalties or matching minors, but the Penguins did a fair job of not going shorthanded during the season. Playoffs are a different animal as Letang demonstrated twice.

  37. hockeymonster says:

Corey Perry took a crotchchecking penalty as well. Then Daly gave him the bizness…classic.

  38. hockeymonster says:

Anyway, meant to say i expect columbus to go left lane hammer down on their forecheck. Cuz lets face it…they have nothing to lose. If we can prevent them from disrupting our puck retrievals, meaning when both our dmen go into same corner we need to have forward support down low so pucks aren’t turned over and our breakouts aren’t disrupted.

Their counter once again will be to move their pressure up and close gaps on our forwards when we’re generating speed. Our counter to that will once again be high flips into NZ or cross corner…or in other words…checkmate.

  40. Sarah says:

Andrew I am simply going by PIM per game and the Wings are 4th best in the league,
They do not take many penalties retaliatory or otherwise.
Could not find a similar stat on your link.
    Mine is simply NHl stats

  41. Sarah says:

    Chi up 3-2!!!!

  42. Sarah says:

Whoops Andrew i finally figured out your site….it shows PP Opportunities against.

That is a misleading stat….as a PP Opp can be for say 3 seconds. So the nbr of opps is not as representative as the nbr of minutes….IMO.

The NHL link I sent is total MINUTES and for that DET is 4th best.

  43. Sarah says:

Also the different set of rules for what happens to Crosby.

    So confusing!

  44. John says:

    Massachusetts, Hamilton

  45. John says:

Somewhere…Ulf Samuelsson ponders the hypocrisy of it all.

  46. Sarah says:

    Good stuff HM…..
I don’t see both our D in the same corner too often…..

I will see the faster guy sometimes taking the slower guy’s corner to retrieve…..ex) Nisky goes to retrieve for Scuderi….

    I hate that, actually!!!! LOL!!

But spot on Jax got nothin to lose, they should come out guns blazing and attack the forecheck I would expect with a 2-man….

    Gonna be exciting!!!!!

  47. scapper says:

That right there nails the biggest problem with the league.

  48. hockeymonster says:

Meant to add that hope we don’t see our 1st PP unit out there for over a minute. Considering how important PP is to our chances of winning, reducing said chance by increasing chance of shortie would…ummm…reduce our chances.

    Spock most certainly wouldn’t deem that to be…wait for it….Logical. {smiley face}

  49. Andrew says:

Sarah, I see your point, but I’ll maintain the total penalty minutes is skewed because a fighting majors were no team gets a power play will skew the total minutes. Detroit had 7 fighting majors on the year, least in the league, I will agree they are disciplined in this regard, but they spent almost 50 more minutes shorthanded this year than the Penguins.

I won’t call the Pens disciplined but I think they did an adequate job of not going a man down, big caveat being that is the regular season, and they have a history of epic playoff blowups.

  50. hockeymonster says:

    You tell him sarah… {smiley face}

  51. hockeymonster says:

They probably shortened their PK time by drawing interference calls.

  52. Andrew says:

Support of the forwards will be important the Penguins did not handle the fore check of Columbus well, it got better as the game went on, but still not a strong point.

And I just saw a highlight of the Seabrook hit, not sure what to think.

  53. hockeymonster says:

Don’t think it was as clean as orpik hit on toews. Looked like seabrook extended up a bit instead of thru. But backes’ head was leaning forward a bit. I think he gets a game.

  54. Sarah says:

I thought elbows high and contact on our near head…..
Also, not a Bruin who did it!
So yeah a game or two.

  55. Sarah says:

And man……SEVEN secs left this time.
Poor Hawks cannot close it out, could easily be up 2nil going home.

  56. Sarah says:

Ok did not get 50 more mins shorthanded than the Pens…..the NHL site just had total PIM and avg PIM per game. So did not understand where you got that, but….
    No worries!

  57. Andrew says:

It looked like Backes turned into it, but that elbow was high. And damn Crawford, margins are so thin come playoffs

  58. hockeymonster says:

Game 3 on madison will be epic.

  59. Gene-Zo says:

So much for “momentum” going into playoffs. Blues lost their last 6, then two straight OT wins . . . Hard to feel sorry for the defending Cup champs, though!

  60. hockeymonster says:

West and south side will want a word with crawford.

  61. Sarah says:

    Yup it blows.
    Again, I hate Boston.

  62. Sarah says:

Well Crawfish has always been pegged as a weak link….came through last year tho.

Actually….I did not see much of the games….were the goals weak?

    7 secs….ugh…..

  63. Wild Bill says:

Let’s get our spurs in the ice! Go Pens!

  64. Barb says:

  65. Andrew says:

Does Pierre McGuire really have rings from his time with the Pens, he is so bad I might watch ROOT.

  66. Sarah says:

    Nisky is MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!

  67. hockeymonster says:

    RH shots are soooo overrated….

  68. Wild Bill says:

A seeing eye shot and deflection!

  69. Sarah says:

Did it hit Gibby in the arse????

  70. Barb says:

    I do believe it did.

  71. Sarah says:

My goodness Nisky is getting richer as we speak!……

  72. Wild Bill says:

    A Big Shorty!

  73. Andrew says:

Gibbons, fastest guy on the ice.

  74. Barb says:

Another GOAL by GIBBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And what about the momentum swinging the other way, Errey?!?!?!?!

  75. Sarah says:

    OMG HOBBITT!!!!!

  76. Sarah says:

    Tanner glass Oy….

  77. Wild Bill says:

Not enough pressure on the shooters.

  78. Andrew says:

I’ll blame Scuderi he helped on that screen.

  79. JohninOshkosh says:

Greetings from a crummy hotel just outside O’hare.

Looking for the Pens to go two up on the Blowees.

Protect your nads, boys. They’re fair game in Bettman’s NHL.

  80. hockeymonster says:

Flower off his angle just enough…either that or perfectly placed shot.

  81. Florida Steeler says:

Stupid penalty by Vitale and Fleury?? Oh well.

  82. hockeymonster says:

Vitale needs to show better instinct than that. We can’t have unforced penalties like that.

  83. DJ says:

He’s horrible. Shero says this is where he earns his pay.

He owes the Pens a big time refund.

  84. Barb says:

Gibbons going into the dressing room on a hit from Johnson.

  85. Bizrow says:

Gibbons leaves the ice with looks like some kind of upper back injury

  86. Andrew says:

Have to love NHL playoff refereeing.

  87. Barb says:

    You do?!?!?!?

  88. Barb says:

    Letang another bone head pass.

  89. Sarah says:

    Nisky MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!

  90. Andrew says:

You don’t like the 10 infractions to 1 call ratio.

  91. Sarah says:

Peeps I am not eager to criticize goaltenders (being one myself!) but good lord Bobo is a hot mess of nuthin right now……

  92. scapper says:

Indeed. Sick shot. But that play show Sid’s greatness as much as any split-the-D goal. Gets puck along boards…and is patient…and patient…draws two guys…and then that pass. Are you kidding me? No wonder there was so much room to blast that great shot.

Not sure if Bob and Steigy talked about Sid on that (I’m stuck with NBC Sportschannel), but good lord, what a play.

  93. DJ says:

Looked to me like it might be a shoulder. Dislocated perhaps.

  94. Sarah says:

    Sorry no Steigy here!
I think Mikey talked about the room Sid created!

  95. DJ says:

Kunitz for roughing to start 2nd period?

    You’ve got to be kidding.

  96. theplanisworking says:

    I missed a good 1st period huh?

Roaming the rolling hills of western Westmoreland County is scenic, but I got carried away.

Reading this, looks like BOB is imploding.
Gotta keep the foot on the pedal here. :)

  97. Wild Bill says:

Hopefully not with Adams and Scuderi on the kill at the same time.

  98. Andrew says:

In his defense, shots are 15-4, and Columbus cannot get out of their own zone, but he not helping much.

  99. Bizrow says:

IMO just quit the firebrand hockey style and let the system and the huge advantage with talent rule the rest of this game. By that I mean discipline, smart hockey (as I duck for cover)

  100. scapper says:

Who is the announcer we’re listening to? Mikey? I didn’t see the intro stuff. Don’t recognize this voice.

  101. Rbilak says:

    Period 1 thoughts

    1. Gibbons had a career period, let’s hope he is ok.

    2. Nisky is gonna be a 6 million dollar a year guy. Someone will pay it.

    3. Best thing is Nisky on point scoring eliminates the Letang factor.

    4. Dan coaching his butt off. Getting Sid away from Dumbinsky. Wow! Next Scuderi will finally be watching game from press box instead of watching on penalty kill. Enough of him already.

    5. Reg Dunlop had offered $100 to anyone who fights Dumbinsky.

    6. Stempy’s is pretty physical. Like how he is playing.

    7. MAF not scaring me now.

    8. PK must get better. No more Scuderi on it would help.

  102. Gene-Zo says:

He took a shot from Calvert in the face and pushed back, thus Kunitz gets called . . . !?!?

  103. DJ says:

Well please don’t tell him that.

    Or the Jackets’ coaching staff.

  104. Sarah says:

No Andrews right….shots way lopsided…..but the Vezina winner needs to step up…..

  105. Florida Steeler says:

Should have NEVER given Letang all that money!!

  106. Sarah says:

    Wow another post…..Fleury livin right……

  107. theplanisworking says:

Hey, in previous years, it would bounce off the posts, and go in.
    This year, no.
I am happy for the better luck/improvement.

  108. hockeymonster says:

Pass off pad plays should be there shortly…

  109. theplanisworking says:

A friend of mine says the 3-1 lead is the most dangerous in hockey.
Geno with the whiff ………. :(

  110. Andrew says:

Two defenseman on the points is needed, this is absurd Columbus is being dominated 5v5.

  111. DJ says:

Ridiculously casual puck handling and puck protection.

  112. Sarah says:

  113. Barb says:

Left MAF out to dry again!

  114. Florida Steeler says:

    Get Letang out of there!!!

  115. Sarah says:

Yeah Geno was. <"!’,h|,~~~. But wow Nisky gave him a huge lane.
And MAF needs to stop that anyway.

  116. Sarah says:

Can we decline the next PP???

  117. Rbilak says:

That gal is directly on our coach. Zero need to have Malkin on the point up 3-1. The worst with 2 D is 3-1. The Pens do not protect leads they want to increase lead. Wrong! When will HCDB get it? Short handed goals change games. TWO D.

  118. Rbilak says:

  119. Rbilak says:

Expect a Neal, Malkin, Letang penalty coming up. Fans booing. Wow.

  120. Florida Steeler says:

Malkin seems to be struggling–poor passes, not in game.

  121. hockeymonster says:

2 units, minute each…why is this so difficult?

  122. hockeymonster says:

PP looked good early when kuni and real deal were rotating in with 2 dmen.

  123. Andrew says:

Hockey the only issue with that is you will likely have your 4th line against, their best line, after the power play. I settle for two defense on the points.

  124. Sarah says:

    Wow, Fleury.
PLEASE don’t let that POS Dubinsky score……

  125. Barb says:

MAF really is earning his money tonight!

  126. hockeymonster says:

1st unit would be rested to have a player or 2 out there, plus glass and/or stempty and you’re fine. Looked like we were shooting for an umbrella formation on PP with 1 dman but columbus smelled blood.

  127. hockeymonster says:

Someone please hand adams a box of smelling salts. Disco…it may be that time…it may be that time.

  128. DJ says:

Outside of like one PP, it looks a mess tonight.

  129. theplanisworking says:

Wouldn’t that require giving Bylsma smelling salts also?

  130. Bizrow says:

It seems as though the Pens are getting out hit, out hustled

That is not IMO DB’s fault, unless he is taking a shift

  131. hockeymonster says:

    Sarah in 3….2…..1….

  132. theplanisworking says:

  133. hockeymonster says:

Thought we were in the drivers seat up until self inflicted shortie. Need to refocus.

  134. Andrew says:

True, it would work great if Dupuis was healthy.

  135. Andrew says:

Last 10 looked like the 1st period of game one, struggled with puck retrieval against that forecheck.

  136. hockeymonster says:

Did i just see what i just saw?

  137. Andrew says:

That is a garbage call, get your head up.

  138. Florida Steeler says:

Letang needs not to dress the next game. He is killing this team with one dumb play after another.

  139. DJ says:

    Scuds doing nothing.

  140. hockeymonster says:

We’re shooting high too often. Pass that puppy off his pads and crash the net.

  141. DJ says:

The next shot from the point that Letang gets through will be his first tonight.

  142. Bizrow says:

This game smells like a loss, if so, lets see what the Pens mettle is

  143. Gene-Zo says:

You could’ve left it at “Smells”

  144. Jandy says:

I cannot stand Lucic, he’s an animal. I haven’t had time to check if he was suspended. If he wasn’t, shame on the garage league!!

  145. hockeymonster says:

I’d try jussi with sid and kuni and BB with geno and real deal. Sid needs some help creating.

  146. Jandy says:

Welcome! We’ll make sure Biz adds you to the list :)

  147. DJ says:

Post-CBA signing so no buy-out for Scuds.

We’ve got Letang and Scuds at like $11mill + next year. Happy days.

  148. DJ says:

    Sid’s forcing a lot tonight.

  149. Rbilak says:

Called it, Thanks Letang. Thanks Dan.

  150. Jandy says:

If Letang isn’t benched, DB needs his azz kicked. Hobbit gets knocked out of the game and the Pens forget how to play hockey. Good grief!

  151. hockeymonster says:

Might want neal and BB to line up on their strong sides so that they can move puck up and pass on forehand then criss cross on way to Ozone.

  152. Rbilak says:

I know it won’t happen, but Letang should be benched. Scuderi on PK needs to be gone. HCDB is responsible, then one minute left in period and you pair Letang with Scuderi? Wow, it is tough to root for this stupidity. Hey Sid, you keep passing to wrong team.

  153. DJ says:

What’s up Jands? Checking in late.

You got any tools in that garage we could toss?

  154. Bizrow says:

Got it Jandy, 466, thought you were cooking ;-)

  155. Jandy says:

Family had me busy. But was tons of fun.. size 9’s should do it ;)

  156. Jandy says:

I am cooking tomorrow. Made my macaroni salad today, though :) will have 8 for noon day meal…good times.

  157. theplanisworking says:

  158. Jandy says:

    There goes the game…dumb penalty

  159. theplanisworking says:

    Anyone here?

  160. Jandy says:

    :wavin: i

  161. theplanisworking says:

    A Loonie!
I think everyone else is drinking. ;)

  162. Barb says:

    Yea we’re still here.

  163. Jandy says:

i only had 1 glass of wine

  164. Jandy says:

    Hi Bodacious, happy Easter!

  165. hockeymonster says:

    eweyone is not dwinkwin

  166. theplanisworking says:

  167. Florida Steeler says:

power play has been awful–getting out hustled like last year vs Islanders. Fleury saved this team total embarrassment tonight.

  168. Lad 9 says:

    I’m perfectly serber… Hic

  169. Jandy says:

Agree that the PP is atrocious

  170. Barb says:

Hi there and Happy Easter to ewe.

  171. Jandy says:

Miscues are killing us right now

  172. theplanisworking says:

    Serber-ia? ;)

  173. Lad 9 says:

Happy Easter all. Getting tired of watching 58 playing the Easter bunny tonight and giving eggs away to the kids dressed in white.

  174. hockeymonster says:

Ok so its 3 for 1 in OT.

  175. Jandy says:

You mean free for all, right?

  176. Jandy says:

Me too Laddie and happy Easter to you too!

  177. Jandy says:

Ok gonna shut down and watch this up in bed. Good night all, Happy Easter everyone! Go Pens!

  178. Lad 9 says:

    Night Jandster.

  179. Florida Steeler says:

How many goals does Stempniak have???

  180. DJ says:

    I said after Game 1 that I had a 2013 Pens-Isles feeling.

  181. Barb says:

Night Jandy! I’m right behind you.

  182. DJ says:

Neal and Kunitz are in the line-up tonight, right?

  183. DJ says:

Gonna need to gut one out in 2nd OT.

  184. Rbilak says:

Will HCDB reward Letang and Scuderi by starting them in second overtime? I mean they certainly helped get us there. No need to hold them accountable right? Maybe put Scuds on powerplay also Dan.

  185. Rbilak says:

I think I saw Neal figure skating a couple times. But Sid is turning the puck over like he wants series over.

  186. Dom says:

  187. Lad 9 says:

  188. theplanisworking says:

Good night to all, and Happy Easter.

  189. Lad 9 says:

    Same to you Plan!

  190. Aaron says:

Pathetic display….. MAF is the only reason the Pens didn’t lose 7-3

  191. Florida Steeler says:

Columbus deserved to win that game. Pathetic performance by the Pens. Fleury played his tail off–everyone else, not so much. Kris Letang is absolutely awful.
Pens could easily be two down.

  192. DJ says:

    Yeah, posted that up above.

  193. DJ says:

Our best skater on this ice tonight is now out.

  194. DJ says:

Blue Jackets might as well have pitched a tent around the crease tonight.

  195. DJ says:

The total lack of puck possession/protection tonight was inexcusable. Got exactly what we deserved tonight.

I predict a lot of deep breaths and long pauses in HCDB’s presser tonight.

  196. Rbilak says:

And called it again. Since it is obvious our coach and GM do not care or realize that Letang and Scuderi suck but everyone else does a congrats. Bench both of them. ZERO effort on goal. Not Acceptable except for Ray and Dan. This is exactly what you get when you refuse to hold accountable Letang’s childish penalties, horrible giveaways and Scuderi watching every goal go in. Awesome job guys. FIRE Dan now.

    1. Malkin and Crosby cannot win a face off, Jussi can but Dan is not smart enough to get that.

    2. Letang and Scuderi rewarded by finishing end of regulation, starting first overtime. Good job Dan.

    3. Shorthanded goal turned game, why? Dan decided Malkin on point would be a good thing 3-1 lead not good enough score 4, not hold them to one. Stupid.

    4. Nothing is gonna change. Malkin and Sid appear uninterested.

    5. Just think Pyatt will be in next game for Gibbons. That should account for at least a goal. Against us that is.

    6. Hope Mario noticed empty seats.

  197. Rbilak says:

Steigy just commented Pens are running out of time in this one and how they played end of year made no difference cause when playoffs start they will be different.

  198. Rbilak says:

Columbus just scored again in overtime on a Letang giveaway and Scuderi letting hs man behind him for 4th time. HCHB responds that both will play even more next game, Craig Adams will be on top powerplay unit and Pens will simply decline all penalties and forfeit all face offs since it makes no difference to him anyhow.

  199. Aaron says:

Running out of time as in their window for a Stanley Cup is closing with this group? If so, I can agree with that!

  200. Andrew says:

Both teams have now blown 3-1 leads. Penguins need to figure out puck retrieval against the aggressive forecheck. They were successful in the regular season by playing opponents even 5v5 and winning the special teams, that did not happen tonight. Penguins need production from the 2nd line, they are getting most of the O-Zone starts, are generating shots, but not goals.

  201. DJ says:

Big question is whether Dan will sit Scuderi. His play demands it but then forget about trading him (if that’s even possible) in off season.

    It’s a Catch 2(+)2 = 4.

  202. DJ says:

On puck retrieval, it’s simple for me. Get there quicker to ensure unimpeded turning and then passing lanes available.

To do that, they will need personnel changes.

  203. J Walter Weatherman says:

Just finished watching recording of the game. Only 3 more losses this series until Blysma is fired!!!

  204. DJ says:

If we’re going to win this series it will require bold, drastic personnel moves. We’ll see if Dan embraces them or shrinks from them.

If the latter, not the man I want as our coach.

  205. Andrew says:

Scuderi needs to be starched for who I am not sure England and Bortuzzo are not exactly consistent and the 13 playoff games does not inspire confidence. The deployment of the defense pairings needs to be altered, not sure why Letang/Scuderi got more D-Zone starts than Martin and Orpik. They need better puck support from forwards.

But this game was lost on poor special teams play, that needs to get better, power play need to be figured out.

  206. J Walter Weatherman says:

To be honest, I think Shero has failed this team as much as Bylsma.

  207. Andrew says:

I will not ever understand the the idea that in a league were the average coaches tenure is 2.5 years that coaching is that crucial, putting significant blame/praise on a coach is an attempt to prescribe causality in environment that is random and drive by chance, which defines the playoffs. If coaches are easily and frequently replaced do they really have that much value?

  208. DJ says:

Put too many Easter eggs in just two baskets last summer.

  209. chethejet1 says:

I wanted The Wings for the first series. That series opponent would have been the best indicator of the pens state of the union. The BJ’s may be ready to go in game three. It really doesn’t matter in that the Pens can’t overcome major flaws in management, coaching and effort. Without a major overhaul of discipline, structure and accountability, this team is indifferent and bloated. Long term contracts will do that.

  210. J Walter Weatherman says:

What’s embarrassing to people like Shero and Bylsma is that common fans like us recognize that Scuderi and Letang are hurting the team, but they have no answers.

  211. HeyBullDog says:

Unfortunately, once they moved Malkin to the wing and went with two defensemen, the power play died. Malkin much better when he has the whole ice to play with, not stuck in the corner. A lot of Adams, Scuderi haters. Adams was tough, Scuderi looks physically weak. Best line is combo of Sutter-Bennet-whomever. James Neal must make a difference. Letang needs a seat. Sid is making some bad decisions in the offensive zone. Must have been twenty plays where Columbus left their zone with a three-on-two break. Turnovers are killing them.

  212. DJ says:

    Power Plays 2/6 1/8
    Hits 51 28
    Faceoff Wins 43 33
    Giveaways 3 13
    Takeaways 5 2

Geno and Sid @ 36% and 38% on FOs.

Gibbons #3 star with 2:26 of ice time.

    Any questions?

  213. DJ says:

    Bad cut and paste job:

Power Plays: 2/6 (CBJ) 1/8 (PIT)
    Hits: 51 (CBJ) 28 (PIT)
Faceoff Wins: 43 (CBJ) 33 (PIT)
    Giveaways: 3 (CBJ) 13 (PIT)
    Takeaways: 5 (CBJ) 2 (PIT)

  214. DJ says:

    Adams was horrible tonight.

  215. Andrew says:

Adams is not the problem, he spent 11 minutes on the ice, 7 minutes 5v5, started 80% of time in the defense zone but still produced positive puck possession numbers. If you want to fault players looked to the guys taking up cap space and getting the most ice time and no goals.

  216. DJ says:

Common fans like us? Speak for yourself, JWW. Kidding aside, there are more reasons sometimes than meet the eye.

You’ve just heavily invested in those two players. Are you admitting one year in that you made two HUGE mistakes? And if you believe NOW that one or both are and that an offseason reconfiguring of personnel would be necessary, are you going to say or do anything now to decrease the trade value of those players moving forward? Well, at least one.

  217. Andrew says:

I’ll add, not the Adams should be playing or on the roster, but in a game that is decided by the smallest of margins it is on the guys spending a half hour on the ice, Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Neal, Kunitz.

  218. DJ says:

Who said Adams is THE problem?

Next game, when the Jackets are on the PP, I’ll turn the TV off and just grab the stats sheet after the game.

  219. Rbilak says:

Agree. Maybe the stars would not take neal ties if we had someone to knock the crap out of them instead of them defending themselves. Shero added depth, but they are not tougher to play against, no one fears a physical battle vs Pens. That is on Shero. Expect Conner to replace Gibbons.

  220. Rbilak says:

Only what do Dan and Ray not see? Malkin should never take a draw when Jussi is on the ice. Giveaways, Globetrotter Hockey due to lack of discipline due to coach failing to hold stars accountable. Takeaways, Effort, hits, effort and players that actually check. Please forward to Dan and Ray as they are blind to the issues. Instead call off practice, Pens are tired again

  221. DJ says:

    Uh, yeah.

    None escaped comment up above.

  222. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Crosby hasn’t scored a goal in 7 straight games and Malkin in 6 straight games?
I’m no expert on hockey, but elite players in sports don’t do this type of thing.
    This is ridiculous……

  223. Rbilak says:

You are correct and it should be written they are top 3 regular season players but disappear in playoffs. I admit I thought MAF was only issue but I am wrong. Pens are Fantasy champs with no hunger, no guts, they are soft they have no leadership. Shero failed to recognize it. Brought back same players, Letang contract will haunt them till it is over, the guy will never get it, most selfish player in NHL and the organization will not address it. Bench him for a game! Otherwise you deserve to lose. Same with Scuderi.

  224. Happy Easter! I went to the Easter Vigil Mass at St. Paul’s Basilica here in Daytona Beach so I didn’t suffer last night over either the Pirates or the Penguins. Hopefully, the Pirates can win today after those two disgusting loses on Friday and Saturday, and the Pens, hopefully, will make more of an effort to beat Columbus than they apparently did last night.

  225. JohninOshkosh says:

    Happy Easter, all!

Ham and chocolate and terrifying anthropomorphic bunnies, oh my!

  226. Sarah says:

I think Adams is an enormous problem on the PK, actually. Have said so repeatedly.
Should not get the minutes he does….

  227. cherokee23 says:

    Very good column by Starkey!

  228. DJ says:

Yes, mentioned the Jackets PP and Adams.

  229. hockeymonster says:

What’s disappointing to me is that it seems like the players quit on disco when he makes boneheaded decisions. We were still up 3-2 after the self inflicted shortie but we moped around like someone just kicked our dog. We need to snap out of it and regain focus and control. I have a feeling the players wont be able to mope around cuz of 4 forward configurations anymore but no matter what happens, everyone makes mistakes, even disco. Players need to know that disco is no different than the players, he makes mistakes too but players can’t pack it in just cuz of one mistake.

We were in total control in the ozone, NZ and dzone. Columbus was so worried about us countering their pressure that we didn’t even need to murphy dump the puck over their pressure to spring rushes cuz they were backing the f&%^ up out of fear and respect allowing for tape to tape passes.

Fleury should have his doc come in for a group session. Mentally we need to be stronger. And i dunno if sid and kuni are nursing any injuries but sid seems hesitant to shoot and his passes are off. Kuni just seems a step slow. Hope they’re ok cuz geno is dancing on the perimeter but we need him to bull his way to the net and middle to get shots off.

Was also saying during the game that we were shooting high way too often. We had chances to pepper his pads and crash the net for Pass off Pad plays but shot high and never got the juicy rebounds Bob was going to give us. Stempty almost had the game winner when sid tried to POP.

  230. hockeymonster says:

Adams is mishandling the most ordinary pucks. Cant have it. Looks a step slower on PK but our options are more limited now with Gibby out.

  231. DJ says:

If you want straight answers, go to Nisky. Conscience of the team. Might only be for the next week or so.

PP needs tweaking. Would now like to see two units. Dan needs to stop talking about regular season and realize we’re two games into playoffs, just lost home ice advantage and very fortunate to be 1-1.

  232. hockeymonster says:

DJ, i was livid to hear him talk about regular season but no excuse for players to not regain focus. Gameplan was working to perfection up to that point. But i also couldn’t believe my eyes when i saw 4 forwards out there while up 3-1 in the 2nd. Don’t want to say i saw it coming…but i saw it coming…on friday.

Good way to regain focus and momentum would’ve been to chip it in and drop the hammer on their dmen but can’t say i saw alot of momentum changing hits flurries by the net. POP plays were there and will be there.

We gave them the one game columbus was allowed to win. If i have to watch columbus mgmt celebrate one more time…

  233. DJ says:

A number of those high and wides were off the blade of Letang. Guy cannot consistently get it even close to the net. Major flaw in his game for some time.

On a postive note, Fleury played well.

  234. Sarah says:

Yep, another reason the choice of Adams bit Bylsma….no options once Gibby went out.
Megna could have been a possibility.

And I suppose, when you’re actually missing a guy like Gibbons, or depending on him in any way, you got even bigger problems……

  235. hockeymonster says:

Ya but tangers shots were from the point. I’m talking about the chances from sharp angles and in the circles. I like pickin the top corner as much as anyone but Bob was sharper but his rebound control isn’t great. We’re moving the puck well but not finishing. POP POP POP and crash the net.

  236. DJ says:

POP plays there for Sid particularly but was dropping / forcing passes all night. Want to see both he and Geno take it to mouth of goal.

Apart from top guns, where the h*ll is Neal? All the big talk and has disappeared. Kuni as well but get the feeling he has something lingering.

  237. BillyBaduka says:

    Happy Easter, Osh and all.

  238. DJ says:

Well I didn’t see a single Letang shot from the point get through — which is a second major flaw in his game. Was referring to others.

  239. hockeymonster says:

I think i saw neal had 7 or 8 shots. But once again, most we high shots. Not conducive to juicy rebounds with crease crashers. After the 1st, pens coaches should’ve been able to tell them to shoot for Bobs pads and go creasecrashin. And sid definitely was forcing. He needs to keep them honest with some more shots and safe plays.

  240. hockeymonster says:

Yes i’m aware tangers shot isnt accurate. But last night’s result wasn’t cuz of tanger. He was actually quite solid defensively. Did he make a blunder or 2? Yes, but so did PM, scuderi, orpik, nisky and maatta.

We need to decide if we’re in it to win as a group?!?! One mistake by tanger, disco or whoever CAN NOT lead to the whole team going into the tank. We had more than half the game to go with a 3-2 lead. More than enough time to re-establish control.

  241. DJ says:

Blunder or two is being very kind, HM. On the game winner, you did see Letang skate across the crease (to save Scuds from himself) while leaving the forward who was on his hip, right?

Not saying this is on one guy or the coach alone — FAR from it. We’re just not consistently putting ourselves in the best position to win PLAYOFF-style hockey. Very frustrating to watch, to say the least.

  242. Sarah says:

They possibly disappear in playoffs cos
    Other teams focus on them
Bylsma won’t match up to get them against weaker lines
Their line mates are not good enough to create on their own

Been happening for 4 years now.

  243. hockeymonster says:

Yes, i saw that while i was yelling at jussi to get off his ass. Calvert had 3 whacks and a cup of coffee and jussi is still standing behind the goal line. We lost that game mentally long before that play.

  244. Sarah says:

I think it is fair to say that this team has some significant problems, from scheme to attitude, which run deep.

When watching the STL CHI or BOS DET series, the intensity is just breathtaking. Those guys would skate through brick walls face first. Or nuts first, as seems to be that fad lately.

Then you watch the Pen and it looks like they took a Xanax and a double scotch. Just nothing going on emotionally.

  245. Sarah says:

Drop the hammer with who? What physicality do we have anymore?
Kunitz used to hit and churn in the corners but lately he’s just floating around.
    Anybody else?

Glass isn’t fast enough, and Engo is sitting.

  246. Sarah says:

Neal has had invisible playoffs for years.
But for I think one multi-goal game last season, he’s like 1 goal in 20-odd games.
I’d have to look it up…..

  247. hockeymonster says:

Double scotch? Sarah, how’d you know what i was drinking? :)

  248. hockeymonster says:

BB, neal, glass, stempty…anyone…wasn’t Artie in da house? If they give me a couple weeks we can put a line of artie, bibster and me out there.

  249. Sarah says:

Yeah I dunno Stemp that well…..Neal is doing nothing it seems….maybe afraid to get a penalty?

Orpik was right, it takes time to build discipline and right now we don’t have it…..

  250. Sarah says:

Hah! I was afraid to post much cos I was drankin after that shorty lol! Just Corona tho…..

  251. Jandy says:

Happy Easter Oshie and everyone! My ham is making the whole house smell good :)
    Chocolate? MmmMmmm,,,

    I’m not talking about last night’s loss…too depressing…

  252. Jandy says:

Our PP (or lack thereof) is killing us.

  253. Sarah says:

Meanwhile, we will be paying Scuderi and Letang 11+ mil next year …..sigh……
    Where’s that Scotch???

Yeah, could talk all day, Sarah, about those other teams. Haven’t caught any of DET-BOS yet but have seen a fair amount of STL-CHI.

It’s laughable how we would even match up given the brand of hockey others are playing but just looking to win this series. We lose next game and I see zero chance of taking 3 of 4. Need bold moves by Dan for this next one and player leadership and accountability on ice.

I got some Jack Daniels’ and I’ll share ;)

I cringe at everything he does.

  257. Sarah says:

Well I’m a broken record but I think it’s long past the time that Bylsma could fix this team. There are too many issues, many of his own making, from scheme to attitude, as I’ve said before.

  258. DJ says:

Whadja do, just cut & paste my 9:50 p.m. post from last night?

Actually, I think it’s just short of $11 mill combined next year so you feel a little better.

LOL no, but maybe I was channelling you! I stayed away from the chat after the shorty!!! Afraid I might embarrass myself!!!

  261. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I’m sure they are being focused on, but elite players get it done no matter what the situation might be.
    Again….This is ridiculous.
    Step up!!
