  1. JRay3 says:

    Bucs Lineup:

    Marte LF
    Harrison 3B
    Cutch CF
    Davis 1B
    Walker 2B
    Tabata RF
    Barmes SS
    Stewart C
    Cole P

There is your Sunday lineup, team really needs this one to at lease earn a split after not pulling out games the last two days they had chances to win.

I hope everybody enjoys their Easter, have to DVR and watch this one late tonight and really hope to see Cole step up as a stopper.

  2. Baywatch says:

Pedro with a MUCH-needed break! Maybe a SPECIAL day for JHay; a contribution from Stewart; a bomb from Davis … a HAPPY EASTER to you all!!!

  3. Lad 9 says:

JRay this is a family site. Posting a lineup like that may qualify as obscene!

  4. radio wave says:

Headed for the ballyard on a beautiful sring day. Go Bucs.

  5. Baywatch says:

Yeah, with no more punch than we have showing there, it’s pretty much on Cole to stop them. And the way they hit fastballs … yeah, could be a long day. On the other hand, if Marte, Cutch & Davis get untracked with a nice hit or two by Walker & Tabby … We shall see!

  8. Lad 9 says:

Happy Easter to all the Lunatics. After a loss like last night, you hope that you have your throwing bb’s and shutting the other team down. Hoping that young Mr. Cole is up to the task today. The Buccos need this one.

  9. Lad 9 says:

I like your other hand scenario Bay. Let’s go Bucs.

  10. chethejet1 says:

Grilli blown save, it happens. He is not locating the heater. But it looks like it has some juice which good to see. Hopefully Ike makes a difference. In two months. Polanco will be here and he will add a piece of what the team will look like for the next number of years. Ike batting fifth allows the rest of the lower lineup to bat where they should. Marte has to hit with more power this year. PNC is a tough place, but he needs to be a 20 home run guy going forward.

  11. You have all by now heard of the death of the former prize fighter: Ruben ‘Hurricane’ Carter at 76 this morning. He’s the one who was wrongfully convicted of murder and imprisoned during the 70s and was thus a symbol of past racial injustice. May he rest in peace.

  12. theplanisworking says:

Happy and Blessed Easter to all.

In the spirit of this holiday, may we all receive a miracle.
    Even our Bucs.

  13. Baywatch says:

    Have a big time, Wave!

  14. JD says:

Hey Wave, I’m headed to my 3rd game in a row. I hope to finally see a winner! Enjoy.

  15. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I’m hardly going to say this is a must win but it won’t be good for the Bucs to fall six games behind a Brewer team that can do no wrong.

  16. Dom says:

Anything but a repeat of yesterday.

  17. theplanisworking says:

  18. Bizrow says:

    Happy Holidays to all

  19. Baywatch says:

    RIP, Hurricane.

  20. Lad 9 says:

Good interview with Nick Kingham on Root. Seems like a nice young man. Hope we see him in two years or sooner.

  21. Milo Hamilton says:

Wow, Carlos Gomez rubs people the wrong way ? Shocking. About time somebody stood up to these punks. That’s all, as you were.

    Happy Easter. :)

  22. Lad 9 says:

Not sure what got that going, but I could hear Cole discussing Gomez’s mother’s fracking as he came into third base. Suspect it was Gomez posing out of the box. Nice lively third inning interlude.

  23. Baywatch says:

STFD, GOMEZ!! I been saying for YEARS we need a good brawl! So long as nobody gets hurt seriously, I’m good!

  24. Lad 9 says:

Can’t even get the blog going today with a good brawl. You would think it is a holiday or something!

  25. Baywatch says:

    Up here, Milo!

  26. Milo Hamilton says:

Pretty sure that was Maldonado that Pearl Harbored Snider. Another solid citizen.

  27. theplanisworking says:

Sorry, out cutting grass, cutting my hair, smoking grass, smoking my hair ………….. wait a minute ……….

Yeah, Gomez is a real winner.
Never a fan of ‘posing’, but if you do, make sure 1) It’s gone, and 2) the pitcher won’t bark at you.

THAT certainly added some color to the Easter Eggs ………. :)

  28. Milo Hamilton says:

Hey Bay. Anyone ever tell you that you look like Jim Craig, the 1980 US hockey goalie ?

  29. theplanisworking says:

    Happy Easter, Milo !

May ALL your citizens be solid. :)

  30. Baywatch says:

Can’t wait to see who the Brewer was who threw that real cheap shot!

  31. twentytwo22 says:

The guy who spiked Mercer, suckered Snider? Give that man a bowtie.

  32. Milo Hamilton says:

    Right back atcha Plan.

  33. Lad 9 says:

Agree Milo. It was Maldanado. He will definitely need to be highly aware the next time he bats against the Buccos.

  34. Lad 9 says:

How about smoking your eggs? Happy Easter my friend.

  35. Florida Steeler says:

Bucs should be able to hit this guy today.

  36. theplanisworking says:

No, the bunnies smoked all the eggs earlier. ;)

  37. theplanisworking says:

    Happy Easter Neil Walker !!!!!!!

    1-0 Good Eggs.

  38. Wild Bill says:

A joyous Easter to all. Nice to turn on the tv and see Walker go very deep. Missed the earlier dust up.

  39. Wild Bill says:

Sweet play by Davis on the bunt attempt!

  40. Baywatch says:

    You’re the first, Milo!

  41. Baywatch says:

  42. Florida Steeler says:

    Flyers 4—Rangers 2

  43. Wild Bill says:

    What up, Bay?

  44. Baywatch says:

Enjoying this game, Bill … but yearning for the W. As bullish as Cole is today, 1 might be enough!

  45. Wild Bill says:

Hope so; yesterday was a Bad Day at Burgh Rock.

  46. Patrick(ri) says:

There goes Josh showing what a worthless piece of the team he is.

  47. The Gunner says:

Looks like your boy Harrison is having another good day.

  48. Brandie says:

Out for the past couple of days…yesterday with friends, today celebrating Easter with family. Sister in law is having twins…my scratch off lottery ticket was a winner! Lots of good going on…beautiful day!

  49. Brandie says:

    Bay Johnstone!!!!

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

Gonna have to win this 1-0 with a complete game.

  51. Lad 9 says:

Yes he is. I would love to see him prove me wrong.

  52. Brandie says:

One of those grinder type wins. I do enjoy those on occasion.

  53. Lad 9 says:

BRANDIEEEEEEE. Happy Easter. Glad things are going well.

  54. theplanisworking says:

Happy Easter to our blog’s resident Ham. :)

  55. Brandie says:

  56. Brandie says:

    Planana Split!!!! What’s shakin’?

  57. Patrick(ri) says:

Hope we can get some more runs to let Grilli get behind yesterday. Another loss for him might be devastating — just a guess about his psyche.

  58. scapper says:

So that’s what it’s like to have a first baseman with some pop. Wonder if the Bucs have ever considered that.

  59. Milo Hamilton says:

Alternate viewing are basketball & hockey playoffs and golf. It’s also beautiful outside. Probably aren’t going want to see how this ends.

  60. Baywatch says:

LOL! Jay Johnstone, one of my favorite players! A real flake, like meself, too.

  61. Milo Hamilton says:

Non roster invitee. Didn’t cost anything but a phone call.

  62. The Gunner says:

The meat of the order is due up in the bottom of the 8th. They need to produce big time.

  63. Baywatch says:

We’ll pull this out. Come on, Milo … as Zig Ziglar used to say, “stinkin’ thinkin’ and you need a checkup from the neck up!” LOL!

  64. Milo Hamilton says:

This game was over the minute Reynolds’ ball left the park.

  65. The Gunner says:

You shouldn’t be so negative, Milo

  66. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s not negative until they prove me wrong. :)

  67. Lad 9 says:

    Way to motor Tabby!

  68. The Gunner says:

That’s a matter of opinion, Milo. Great hustle by Tabby – the Bucs are up by 1!

  69. Patrick(ri) says:

Not to panic , but at this point it looks like the Brewers are a better team in all respects, save defense. MUCH stronger in RF,CF, SS , 1B & pitching. Catching is close but edge to Brewers. I prefer our bench, due to Josh, Tabby & Gabby & Stewart.

  70. Patrick(ri) says:

Oh boy, Grilli is in a vice. Hope he prevails!

  71. Milo Hamilton says:

So he pulled him huh ?

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

    Hello, anyone ?

  73. Florida Steeler says:

    Grilli STINKS!!!!!

  74. Patrick(ri) says:

You know Grilli wanted a strikeout. Too much?

  75. Lad 9 says:

Hung the slider. Served it up like an Easter ham. Damn!

  76. Milo Hamilton says:

Two blown saves last year, three in the first three weeks.

  77. Patrick(ri) says:

I think I am agreeing — give reliever a rest and let Cole W or L himself.

  78. Wild Bill says:

After strike one, why would you throw it anywhere close??

  79. Lad 9 says:

Yes he did and no matter what Grilli did, it was a mistake. Only 91 pitches.

  80. The Gunner says:

Grilli is quickly becoming a problem child, Milo

  81. Jandy says:

Have I said I really hate Ryan Braun?

  82. The Gunner says:

I hate him, too, Jandy but I wish we had a bat in our lineup like him.

  83. Patrick(ri) says:

    Sob can sure hit.

  84. Milo Hamilton says:

And now you have to mute the TV because the false optimism is becoming nauseating.

  85. The Gunner says:

That’s what the Pirate announcers get paid to do

  86. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

He bats RH like Gaby. Strikes out as much, if not more than Pedro.

All or none type of player.

  87. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Grilli: not sure what to do with him at this point. Too early to panic, but he can’t keep blowing saves.

I don’t think he gets pulled yet, but the rope needs to be shorter.

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

And to be fair, it’s not just them. Seems to be the trend these days. If you ever get a chance to watch a Nationals game, they might be the worst.

  89. Milo Hamilton says:

Your closer needs to be 90% if you’re going to go anywhere. Grilli needs to save 23 in a row to hit that average.

  90. bradthedad says:

    Barmes can still pick it.

  91. Jandy says:

    Yes indeed.

  92. Jandy says:

Ok gotta help hubby with the ’78 F-250 highboy. Do it Bucs!

  93. Florida Steeler says:

Vin Scully is one of the few good ones left. Pirate announcers are near the top of nauseous, however.

  94. Patrick(ri) says:

I’m not a mgr, just play one on an iPad, but what is wrong with giving him a day off after a particularly bad day? He seems like the kind of guy who might need a bit more time.

  95. Florida Steeler says:

Did hear the Mariners broadcast team say, “the guy has to make that play, he is paid to do so” You would never hear objectivity coming from the Pirate broadcast team.

  96. Milo Hamilton says:

Better get them 1-2-3. Evil lurks in the hole.

  97. Milo Hamilton says:

  98. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Because he needs to have a short memory. The sooner he’s on the mound, the sooner he can put a bad outing out of his mind.

  99. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Which he’s capable of doing.

  100. Patrick(ri) says:

One home run , or so, a year. Now would be a good time

  101. Patrick(ri) says:

I would most often agree, but in this case I wonder if conventional thinking is best?

  102. Milo Hamilton says:

The Pirates are holding open tryouts to see if any of their relievers can get Braun out.

  103. Dom says:

    Two blown saves???

  104. Patrick(ri) says:

Did you see that brawny fan???

  105. Milo Hamilton says:

Neil uses his high school wide receiver skills on those pop ups.

  106. Patrick(ri) says:

Best move I have seen by Hurdle this season. Kudos to Wilson, for execution

  107. Patrick(ri) says:

Like Mercer, the bottom of the order should get it done against Duke.

  108. Dom says:

    Mercer is on board!

  109. Patrick(ri) says:

Wow, it really is Mercer vs Duke and Mercer wins, again!

  110. Wild Bill says:

Marte looks like he needs a week off.

  111. Patrick(ri) says:

He does look confused at the plate.

  112. Jandy says:

  113. Arriba Wilver says:

  114. Milo Hamilton says:

Looks like we’ve run out of pitchers.

  115. pattonbb says:

Did I miss the “Grilli shouldn’t be closing” conversation? If so, please allow me to add my 2 cents – Grilli shouldn’t be closing.

  116. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Not with closers.

  117. Arriba Wilver says:

Yeah, not getting to Duke, and putting in Jeanmar pretty much does it.

  118. Jandy says:

I swear, dunno what it is with these ‘Burgh teams these days.smh

  119. Patrick(ri) says:

Hurdle is on a roll. Even if Lucroy is pretty tough.

  120. Milo Hamilton says:

Well, Matt Kuchar just found out that it’s darned near impossible to choke away a tournament sitting in the clubhouse with your score already posted. Nicely played sir.

  121. Jandy says:

Well, Jeanmar got outta that one.

  122. Patrick(ri) says:

Sort of like a ’78 F-250: more looks than performance.

  123. Thundercrack says:

I’m not ready to give up in Grilli. I think part of it is rust. His velocity is increasing but his location is off. I think he needs more work.

And Braun is a jerk but he is also a very good player. Very good

  124. Arriba Wilver says:

Seems like a good guy. Apparently one of the most popular players on the Tour.

  125. Jandy says:

Still dunt understand why Hurdle didn’t leave Cole pitch. Didn’t even have 90 pitches.

  126. Milo Hamilton says:

    Come on Cutch, swing harder.

  127. Patrick(ri) says:

Trumps his two good calls, for sure.

  128. Milo Hamilton says:

    Rust from what ?

  129. Jandy says:

Thanks TC for the support for Grilli. He’s a fav of mine. Also.agree on Braun, but that doesn’t mean I can’t hate him, right? Lol

  130. Patrick(ri) says:

    Nice swing Ike.

  131. Jandy says:

  132. Jandy says:

    Yeah wth was that? Lol

  133. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  134. Wild Bill says:

This is some really lousy baseball; I just realized I could be eating without it.

  135. Jandy says:

Cole was at 91 pitches? Still…

  136. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  137. Jandy says:

  138. Thundercrack says:

I hate him too Jandy. But after being at the game on Thursday and watching a couple others this weekend it’s hard not to acknowledge that he isn’t a really good player.

But with him, Gomez, Maldanado and a bunch of other Brewers–they sure make it hard to like them

  139. Arriba Wilver says:

    That was a meatball.

  140. Lad 9 says:

Would much rather have Mazzaro in the pen than Jeanmar.

  141. Arriba Wilver says:

And, it was 2 in a row.

  142. Wild Bill says:

Looks like the Bruins took their loss to Detroit personally. 4 – 1 lead.

  143. The Gunner says:

Your wish may come true, Laddie

  144. Jandy says:

  145. Patrick(ri) says:

These games get more and more painful to watch. I can only imagine hoe it feels to play them(assuming you are not a Brewer fan/player).

  146. twentytwo22 says:

Pitiful offense from the Pirates the last 5 innings. They aren’t facing ace relievers.

  147. Jandy says:

    Sprinkled with parmesan…

  148. Reading says:

From should have won 3 of 4 to losing 3 of 4. Solidifies the great weekend. Wait. Barmes, Stewart, and Pedro in bottom of 13th. That could mean … never mind.

  149. Jandy says:

    Neither are the Brewers…

  150. Reading says:

Why does Grilli give Braun anything to hit again?

  151. Dom says:

Looks like this one is over.

  152. Jandy says:

You said it better than I could TC. And put Maldonado close to the top of that “dislike” list.

  153. Wild Bill says:

We’ve been having the debate over when Polanco should debut. The way we are playing compared to the rest of the league, by the time he arrives it may not matter at all.

  154. Dom says:

    Barmes goes down.

  155. Patrick(ri) says:

Just saw the “on paper” stats for the Brewers closer. Wonder what Walk meant about edge, on paper to Pirates Bullpen? Living in the past?

  156. Jandy says:

    Cross your fingers, Dom

  157. Dom says:

    Up to Pedro.

This looks to be a bad weekend for the city.

  158. Patrick(ri) says:

Trying to figure out why Martin isn’t batting. Saving him for the 14th.

  159. Thundercrack says:

This is the Pirates’ 19th game of the season.

They haven’t looked good or haven’t gotten a role. But I’m going to give them about another 20 games or so before I light my hair on fire.

  160. Thundercrack says:

  161. Wild Bill says:

Hope you’re right, Tc. Really do.

  162. Jandy says:

Yeah..finding a way to lose these last games has been depressing but…give them a chance

  163. Dom says:

    Pedro on board.

  164. Lad 9 says:

Last position player. They would just walk Marte to get to the pitcher if they used Martin up.

  165. Jandy says:

Was that a.strike$ didnt hit the corner

  166. Dom says:

    That’s game.

    We lose.

  167. Jandy says:

That’s why they didnt walk Marte

  168. Milo Hamilton says:

Be sure to join us again tomorrow for another edition of – A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The World Series.

  169. Dom says:

Nope but we had our chances.

  170. Jandy says:

    Shake, rattle ‘n roll

  171. The Gunner says:

And good night Mary Edgerley, wherever you are!!!

  172. Patrick(ri) says:

3 runs in 13 innings = pitching not really the problem, except for the Pirate hitters, that is.

  173. Jandy says:

All good news! Happy Easter Sistah!

  174. Jandy says:

Have a nice evening yinz all. Catch ya on the flip side.

  175. Arriba Wilver says:

I do like Snider better after this game. And Maldonado needs beaned.

  176. Daquido_Bazzini says:

A royal Pirate disgrace against the Brewers.
Spiked in the ankle, punched in the face, PED-enhanced-HR’s and almost swept.
    Take note….Criminals and cheaters rule.
If I sound frustrated….Color it MASSIVELY.

  177. Arriba Wilver says:

Duke getting the win stings a little.

  178. Chuck H says:

Looks like the same team as last year’s, which can’t hit with RISP, and who is our closer? Grilli is not the same closer that he used to be. Without Acidhead’s homer in the 9th, we had the win. God I hate that team of showoffs. How Gomez could stand at home plate, admiring his “homer”, and still make it to third base is beyond me. I hate show-offs and, I think Cole does too. Looks like Snyder doesn’t take guff from anyone.
I hope we get payback before the end of the season.

  179. Daquido_Bazzini says:

  180. Steelag70 says:

Maybe last year was a mirage…still early in the season, but they need to turn this around in a hurry. Too many disappointing performances right now. May be time to move Grilli out of that closers role. Raise your hand if you had the Buccos 6 games out the third week of the season.

  181. Arriba Wilver says:

    Also liked Stewart.

  182. Chuck H says:

Yes, he certainly is no lead-off man.

  183. Chuck H says:

Hurdle has a habit of not letting his starters finish a game. Usually the guy he puts in loses the game.

  184. Rob Scott says:

28th in payroll doesn’t lie. A team that is cheap eventually loses talent or doesn’t sign any. Morales/Drew/Polanco would have made this inept offense into a very good one but because they will either cost money now or in the future it’s never going to happen. Last year was a mirage and can’t be duplicated with a 3-5 rotation of Wanda Morton and Volquez. These are facts which are indesputable.

  185. radio wave says:

We have been to three games. Combined score;visitors4, pirstes 5. And 1 fight. Is this baseball or hockey?

  186. Chuck H says:

Hurdle should go to closer by committee- Wilson, Watson and/or Mazzaro depending on right or lefthand batter, Go with the percentages.

  187. Arriba Wilver says:

Got any facts to back that up? How the heck did they win 94 last year if that’s true? Sure wasn’t complete games.

  188. Baywatch says:

  189. Baywatch says:

The voice of reason! Now if we can just LISTEN!

  190. Baywatch says:

(New acronym LMHOF = Light My Hair On Fire!) LOL!

  191. Baywatch says:

  192. Ed says:

Another wasted outing gone for naught! Once again another late inning lead blown. Grilli leaving pitches up. Maybe Melancon or Justin Wilson need to close. Then Jeanmar gets tagged. He has not been impressive so far. Then they have Wandy penciled in for Thursday against the Reds. Let’s see. ..7 homers in 20 innings. Has to be a ml record. He’s finished! Dfa him. Outright Gomez and get Cumpton and Mazzaro HERE In A hurry.

  193. wvstarship says:

So now that he’s had another bad game, does he have to come in TWICE the next game , so he can put both bad outings out of his mind?

  194. Ed says:

Yes get Mazzaro up here from Indy NOW!

  195. Ed says:

Yeah Snider is manning up at the plate and in the beat down dept. It’s time to bean mr. Ped Braun. We need to get our mojo

  196. wvstarship says:

  198. Ed says:

  202. Breakthestreak says:

Poor guy can only throw 91 mph fastball. He can’t get an 8 year old little leaguer out with that so he throws a hook right over middle of the plate and belt high. He is a really good guy and had a good year or two. Now he needs to move to the 5th and 6th innings. If he closes we are in bad shape

  203. Breakthestreak says:

    So true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  204. Bizrow says:

I hope JAL surprises us with “On the eve of destruction” tomorrow.

Its early, both with the PBC and the Pens

  205. Dennis Gallagher says:

The game was over the minute Hurdle allowed Cole to bat in the bottom of the seventh with men on first and second, one out and Pedro on the bench. How can you pass up a chance to add many runs to your score in favor of a possibly equal chance of have men on second and third with two out and an ice cold Marte at bat? Hurdle is a complete mystery.

  206. Dennis Gallagher says:

In 3 seasons plus Hurdle’s team has had 10 complete games. Morton, Burnette, and Liriano 2 each and Maholm, Karstens, Correia and James McDonald 1 each.

In 12 full seasons managing the Pirates, Danny Murtaugh averaged 42 complete games per season and finished first in the league in complete games once. He was also last once.

As far as the guy he puts in usually losing the game, this is obviously untrue since the Pirates have such a good record during his tenure, however there have been 202 save opportunities in that time that have been converted to saves 147 times.

There is no question that Hurdle’s results with relief pitchers has been very good. There is no reason not to think that it could be improved on if he were to spread the closing and set up opportunities among more pitchers with the emphasis on matchups, player performance, rest issues and prevention of overwork by a few.
