And here, from this morning’s skate, are a couple questions I had for Chris Kunitz and Jussi Jokinen:

I appreciate the coverage of the Arena District in Columbus.
Right across the parking lots from Nationwide Arena is a small concert venue called Lifestyles Community Pavilion. I have seen concerts there that bypassed Pittsburgh. Stayed at the Blackwell Hotel by Ohio Stadium. Nice place.

    Columbus did that district right.

  5. Brandie says:

Wanting to see the Penguins play some reasonable responsible hockey. What will it take to get Malkin and Crosby to step up? The reality is the competition is only going to get stiffer from here on out.

    With that said…

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!!

    Good evening Captain Cave Plan!!!!!

  6. BillyBaduka says:

    LET’S GO PENS!!!

  7. Brandie says:

    Billy Bad Azz!

  8. BillyBaduka says:

    Hello Brandie,

Nice to see you. Hope your job is going well.

  9. hockeymonster says:

Brandie, serious question….can you describe penguins as arctic monkeys?

  10. Brandie says:

The only one that ever really looked like an Arctic Monkey was Tyler Kennedy and he is no longer on the team.

  11. BillyBaduka says:

  12. Brandie says:

Learning a lot. I hope all is well with you too!

  13. BillyBaduka says:

I think these are as close to arctic monkeys there is:

  14. hockeymonster says:

  15. Brandie says:

    Like I said…Tyler Kennedy.

  16. Rbilak says:

    1. Don’t know what to expect tonight. Columbus can fold, Pens can play uninspired. Cannot get a feel for this team.

    2. Powerplay combinations will be worth watching.

    3. Is Scuderi or Adams hurt? (Sarcasm)

    4. Which Pen will take the worst penalty tonight? My money is on Letang

    5. Who scores first Sid or Geno or a Brooks?

    Ready to watch.

  17. Milo Hamilton says:

    Scire ! Adams ?

  18. Andrew says:

  19. hockeymonster says:

  20. BillyBaduka says:

  21. Andrew says:

    Dreaded 2-0 lead.

  22. Andrew says:

  23. Milo Hamilton says:

    Uh oh.

  24. casper in a-town says:

    Make that 3-0!

  25. BillyBaduka says:

    Not any more!

  26. BillyBaduka says:

Could be too much too soon but gotta like they’re energy tonight.

Keep that up and play smart.

  27. GAWTS2009 says:

Wow maybe I should stick to mowing any one else need their yard done? Already hit 2 tonight

  28. Barb says:

    Should we worry?

  29. Brandie says:

Wasn’t that a role William Conrad played? NISCANNON?

  30. Milo Hamilton says:

Great point by the Old Two Niner. It’s incumbent upon the Penguins to keep their cool now. You might have to take a cheap shot or two but you have to bite your tongue & keep your composure.

  31. BillyBaduka says:

  32. Milo Hamilton says:

Mine’s looking kinda ratty, how close are you ?

  33. GAWTS2009 says:

If only it were that easy

  34. Barb says:

I asked my brother in FL the same question and he concurs with you Brandecita.

  35. GAWTS2009 says:

About 3 hours. 2.5 if no cops are out

  36. GAWTS2009 says:

    Aren’t haha

  37. theplanisworking says:

Don’t light your hair on fire !! :)

  38. Brandie says:

There are no guarantees with this team except that someone will take a dumb penalty, leading to Jandy charging up her size 9 wide thwapping shoe if certain death.

  39. Lad 9 says:

Wow. 3-0 before I sat down after work. Pens look like sharks feeding on a chum slick so far.

  40. GAWTS2009 says:

Can we get one of those embellishment calls

  41. hockeymonster says:

    They gotta be joking

  42. Barb says:

Trust me I won’t. Not allowed to play with matches.

  43. GAWTS2009 says:

I hope she has that ready for nealer

  44. Lad 9 says:

    Now THAT was embellishment!

  45. Andrew says:

Toronto phoned gotta keep it close.

  46. BillyBaduka says:

“Pens look like sharks feeding on a chum slick”

    That’s funny stuff.

  47. GAWTS2009 says:

    Don’t use logic!!!

  48. Iceman says:

Where’s the guy that wanted Jokinen off the Malkin-Neal line? Made that Neal goal happen.

  49. Florida Steeler says:

James Neal continues his stupid, stupid penalties.

  50. hockeymonster says:

    Iceman thawing out.

  51. theplanisworking says:

  52. Milo Hamilton says:

The key to finally protecting one of these 3-1 leads is scoring the 4th goal before the other team scores the 2nd.

  53. hockeymonster says:

  54. Brandie says:

  55. Brandie says:

That pearl of Wisdom is from your ‘Ol Uncle Meye-low!

  56. theplanisworking says:

Height-challenged, and to the point. ;)

  57. BillyBaduka says:

    Sure seemed that way.

  58. GAWTS2009 says:

Hate to say this due to probable injury but Johnson out helps pens big time

  59. GAWTS2009 says:

  60. Milo Hamilton says:

Crosby 7-0 in 1st period faceoffs.

  61. hockeymonster says:

There’s blood in the water but columbus wont go away.

  62. Jandy says:

  63. Andrew says:

I would take any Regis McGuire analysis with a grain of salt, knowing who played on your youth hockey team and your points total in the OHL doesn’t mean he is good at his job.

  64. Jandy says:

  65. Jandy says:

  66. Iceman says:

This team looks like it wants to win in a bad way. They are flying. Still think Scuderi might not fit anymore.

  67. Brandie says:

I thought embellishment was something done by the Bedazzler. ;)

  68. Jandy says:

    LOL Sistah, well played ;)

  69. Dave G says:

I strongly dislike the embellishment calls.

If there is an actual penalty committed against someone, embellishment should be nullified.

Embellishment should only be called when a player fakes a high stick to his face or flops to the ice with just a bump, and when there is no penalty called on the other player. Essentially, for trying to draw a penalty when there is none.

  70. theplanisworking says:

    Isn’t embellishment a condiment?

Because normally only a hot dog would do it ……..

  71. Jandy says:

Primed and ready, Mr Hap :)

  72. Carlos Danger says:

    Definitely agree.

  73. Jandy says:

    The Iceman cometh!

  74. Brandie says:

Can we call embellishment during a Dan Bylsma presser? Just want to be clear on these things.

  75. Jandy says:

And if he’s injured the twit brought it on himself.

  76. hockeymonster says:

Columbus is gonna wanna slow us down. Would look to Murphy dump the puck cross corner a few times when they move their pressure up.

  77. theplanisworking says:

I know this isn’t hockey related, but I just saved everyone 2 hours of wasted time …………..

  78. Brandie says:

    Describes me perfectly!

  79. Jandy says:

  80. Barb says:

Or too much time to answer a question.

  81. hockeymonster says:

  82. cherokee23 says:

    That’s a good idea

  83. Barb says:

Ewww we start with the Browns and end with the Bengals. And our bye week isn’t until the 3rd week in November.

  84. GAWTS2009 says:

    Nvm missed the above post

  85. Brandie says:

Jeopardy Final Jeopardy music always plays in my head when watching a Coach B presser.

  86. Brandie says:

    Good evening Danger Mouse!

  87. GAWTS2009 says:

Haha can Someone please dub that into one of his press conferences

  88. BillyBaduka says:

He did. Skated his chin right into Kunitz’ shoulder.

  89. Lad 9 says:

BRANDIEEEEEEEEE! Let’s take another doubleheader tonight!

  90. theplanisworking says:

  91. Jandy says:

    but he’s back…lol

  92. GAWTS2009 says:

I’m not skilled enough to do it or I so would

  93. Brandie says:

Either that or the yodeling Mountain Climber music from that one Price Is Right game.

  94. Brandie says:

    I’m up for that!

  95. Brandie says:

    The Jandy-Cannon!

  96. Jandy says:

    hey hey Sistah!

  97. Barb says:

Love it Geno giving up the body to block shots.

  98. Florida Steeler says:

    Columbus dictating tempo again.

  99. GAWTS2009 says:

Yankees p Pineda ejected from game for using pine tar! Wow if it couldn’t get any worse in baseball

  100. GAWTS2009 says:

    Geno “tanner glass” malkin

  101. Brandie says:

“Passing out checks like it’s the first of the month!”

    I love Mike Lange!

  102. Jandy says:

    are you serious???

  103. Jandy says:

    he’s the BeST!

  104. Sarah says:

So I finally get on line and I guess our PK is out scoring our PP?
    And Adams LOL???
    It’s a parallel dimension I tell ya!!!

  105. GAWTS2009 says:

Yeah just came across my twitter. Thought it was fake but the video is there and everything

  106. Jandy says:

    it’s your lucky day lol

  107. Jandy says:

    What a dumb azz smh

  108. Barb says:

What did Stempniak do to get a huge penalty?

  109. Brandie says:

    (Twilight Zone music plays)

  110. GAWTS2009 says:

    Kunitz also very noticeable tonight.

  111. GAWTS2009 says:

    Sliced Cbjs face open

  112. Brandie says:

Wisniewski just ran his face into Kunitz’s head gear, and now Sutter gets called for delay of game? Just want to give s**t away now!

  113. Sarah says:

    High stick I think….?

  114. Brandie says:

    Now 3-2! Dang!

  115. GAWTS2009 says:

    Next goal wins?

  116. Florida Steeler says:

They play some of the most careless hockey of any Pens team in recent history. Just sitting back on their heels watching and committing stupid penalties, one after another.

  117. Brandie says:

  118. GAWTS2009 says:

    Letang! SHOOT THERE! Too fancy

  119. Florida Steeler says:

Crosby with cute passes all night.

  120. Florida Steeler says:

Can anyone believe this awful playing??

  121. Brandie says:

Now Niskanen called for tripping. Most self flagellating hockey team ever!

  122. Jandy says:

    hush yo mouth!

  123. theplanisworking says:

I am trying to follow this game on worthless Gamecast, but it sounds like I should be glad I am not seeing this?

  124. Milo Hamilton says:

Since scoring the 3rd goal the Pens are being outshot 21-5. Looks like Saturday night.

  125. Sarah says:

For cripes sake how many penalties this period???

  126. Brandie says:

Got out of that period by the skin of their teeth-n-at!

  127. Sam says:

Is this the same officiating crew all series? they are beyond bad. on both sides.

  128. Jandy says:

    too many!

  129. GAWTS2009 says:

Was stick to glass’ face a follow through?

  130. Sarah says:

Did they go to a 1-4?

  131. GAWTS2009 says:

It’ll be us! Right? Right? Gah I hope so!

  132. Florida Steeler says:

Let’s not blame the officiating–the Pens deserved EVERY PENALTY they got that period.

  133. Andrew says:

Do you every having any positive observations, the Sutter clear hit the glass.

  134. Sam says:

Not blaming at all. Just saying that what is not being called is amazing. On both sides!

  135. Florida Steeler says:

Just the truth Andrew, without your rose colored glasses on.

  136. Milo Hamilton says:

Hard to tell with all the power plays but I sure hope not.

  137. hockeymonster says:

Whats a shame is how wisneiski is making fools out of the refs. Guess the refs are ok with that. Good for wisneiski.

  138. Jandy says:

  139. Jandy says:

    does it matter?

  140. Milo Hamilton says:

Sid is 12-1 on faceoffs. Everyone else is 8-24.

  141. Jandy says:

    it’s pathetic

  142. Jandy says:

amazing…now if he could just score a goal or three…

  143. The Pens have retained their lead through 2 periods only because M.A. Fleury has been sharp enough, while Columbus outshot the Pens 18-6 in the second. Now let’s hope the Pens can hold on for the rest of the game although one can’t be sure because of the Pens being penalized so often.

  144. Andrew says:

It is your prerogative, no worries I just would not be appealing to anything these officials are doing tonight, they have demonstrated to be out of their depth.

  145. Jandy says:

+++ yeah, one has to wonder just WHO has the rose colored glasses on.

  146. Andrew says:

Matt Cooke gets 7 games, but Seabrook gets 3 for a shot to the head?

  147. hockeymonster says:

Yes. Technically its not a penalty.

  148. Iceman says:

He is drawing them like a champ. Not saying they weren’t penalties, but even in the regular season most of those calls he’s drawing aren’t called.

  149. hockeymonster says:

    Cookie got off easy.

  150. Anyhow, the NFL schedule is out today although it’s too early for anyone but the diehards and the bettors to really care.

  151. Florida Steeler says:

Letang has played much better tonight and Fleury continues excellent goal tending, keeping them in the game. Pens continue to think their talent will win games for them without working hard–does not work that way in hockey.
First period, hustled to every puck, second period played back, took stupid penalties and allowed the game to become in doubt.

  152. Iceman says:

I thought that was only on shots.

  153. Iceman says:

Four games are for being Matt Cooke.

  154. hockeymonster says:

Ok forwards are too far up. Come back get speed then chip into air if you have to. Like that. Good job tanger.

  155. Jandy says:

I agree Iceman, with your stick, you’re responsible for controlling it

  156. Jandy says:

well, he did go knee on knee

  157. theplanisworking says:

This period will go a long way to determining this series.

Pens play smart, they go up 3-1
Pens play dumb, it’s 2-2. and Columbus believes even more.

  158. Milo Hamilton says:

    John Anderson, of course. :)

  159. GAWTS2009 says:

Yeah I couldn’t tell. Kept missing the replay

  160. Milo Hamilton says:

They cannot play any dumber right now. It is only a matter of time.

  161. Brandie says:

Who would have thought Fleury would be the team leader? Not I, but food on him!

  162. Gene-Zo says:

maybe a snack after the game?

  163. GAWTS2009 says:

Soft spine by commish on both accounts. Maybe Cooke transformation saved him from a longer suspension

  164. Iceman says:

Not arguing with it. He deserves the extra games because of his history.

  165. GAWTS2009 says:

Haha maybe I need that. My Fingernails disappeared

  166. Dom says:

    37 saves for Fleury.

  167. hockeymonster says:

  168. Barb says:

Wow! He is blooming at the right time.

  169. Brandie says:

Don’t make Monster angry…You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry!

  170. Jandy says:

    I like Cookie…but yeah…

  171. Jandy says:

Ha! Wisniewski got bitten in the butt!

  172. Jandy says:

    Have a drink Monster Mash

  173. GAWTS2009 says:

    This could be huge pp

  174. Jandy says:

  175. GAWTS2009 says:

He’s not him when he’s hungry. Grab a snickers!

  176. GAWTS2009 says:

Or a boring one either way atleast we didn’t give up the shortie there

  177. hockeymonster says:

He best not be thinking we can shut the game down using disco stretch.

  178. GAWTS2009 says:

Where is Crosby??? Almost un-noticeable this game

  179. Jandy says:

  180. Jandy says:

    Wiesnewski has quote the temper

  181. Milo Hamilton says:

Even though they didn’t scire on that power play it seemed to settle them down a little bit. CBJ only has 7 shots in the 3rd period.

  182. Florida Steeler says:

Jokinen all over the ice chasing the puck.

  183. GAWTS2009 says:

  184. Jandy says:

    Milo gets the credit ;)

  185. Jandy says:

  186. Brandie says:

    Tie Game!

  187. Milo Hamilton says:

    We’ve all been waiting.

  188. Florida Steeler says:

    What was Fleury doing??

  189. Jandy says:

why is Fleury BeHIND the net at this point of the game?????

  190. GAWTS2009 says:

    Fluery being Fluery!
Gah played great all night then that

  191. theplanisworking says:

  192. Brandie says:

    Me too!

    Brandon Dubinsky of all people!

  193. Jandy says:

    I effn hate Brandon Dubinsky

  194. Milo Hamilton says:

No need to watch the OT.

  195. Naje says:

Just when you’re thinking that Fleury’s flaky side might be behind him, he pulls that bonehead play. Ugh.

  196. Jandy says:

I’m going to bed, turn it on up there….good luck Pens…night Loonies

  197. hockeymonster says:

  198. Brandie says:

This is what happens when the team refuses to play a full game of hockey!

  199. Sarah says:

Been happening for years HM…..deep breaths, shallow thoughts!

  200. Sarah says:

Not bone headed….awful bounce. But yeah with his history, just stay in the net dude. Good lord.

  201. Breakthestreak says:

What’s Fluery doing? Can’t figure out that guy

  202. Purple Moose says:

Hey, the Pens played a solid 10 minutes tonight, what else do you want?

  203. And now, the Pens.and Blue Jackets are in overtime since the Pens’ offense quit after the first period while the. Blue Jackets’ offense didn’t. X

  204. DJ says:

Sid hovering around blue line with Jackets coming out of their zone (thinking empty-netter?), then soft skating back to our net for puck support, then fans on stopping the centering pass, then goal.

Sid nowhere to be found tonight.

  205. Purple Moose says:

The Trib has to put a milk carton on the front page of the sports section tomorrow with 87, 71 and 14 on it.

  206. theplanisworking says:

As bad as the Pens have seemed in the second and third periods, they CANNOT lose this game. Don’t give Columbus any hope !!

  207. Dom says:

See. It’s not Fleury’ s fault.

  208. hockeymonster says:

Hope Goc is ready to go. FO situation atrocious. Anisinov is 7 for 12 and mackenzie is 5 for 5. Anisinov wasn’t even a center with NYR and who the efff is mackenzie???

  209. Florida Steeler says:

Well, that last goal was Clearly 100% Fleury’s fault.

  210. cobra39 says:

There’s one, and only one, player to blame for that play — the old 29er.

  211. Gene-Zo says:

Fleury had to play the puck behind the net. The 2 BJ forwards had beaten Pens defense. Got some bad bounces. That’s what kills you when your team played 5 strong mins in 1st pd, zero in 2nd, and maybe 7 in 3rd.

  212. GAWTS2009 says:

Agreed gotta do more than just face off wins

  213. hockeymonster says:

I blame bibster. He jinxed us talking about how we shut columbus down in 3rd. Ok maybe its not his fault…

  214. Dom says:

    Plus a bagillion

  215. Milo Hamilton says:

Fleury’s a mess right now. This shouldn’t take long.

  216. Gene-Zo says:

    and the mess continues . . .

  217. Dom says:

    Everyone’s fault but Fleury

  218. Florida Steeler says:

    Total collapse by Fleury.

  219. DJ says:

Guess you need a 4-goal lead in this series now.

  220. J Walter Weatherman says:

I’m sure glad Shero decided to stick with Fleury this past offseason. He had done so much to deserve that. This team continues to be an absolute joke. Bylsma and Shero will be gone this offseason.

  221. Dom says:

Not what the analyst said during intermission.

  222. hockeymonster says:

    It’s always something….

  223. Purple Moose says:

At least the picture is finally complete:
    – Awful coaching
    – Lack of effort by the team
    – Complete disappearance by the stars
    – And now the old Fleury has returned

  224. Breakthestreak says:

Vokoun or Zatkoff next ??? The Flower has wilted again

  225. Milo Hamilton says:

Let the excuses begin. Can’t win with goaltending like that. Period.

  226. J Walter Weatherman says:

One more point. Sidney Crosby should be downright embarrassed by his performance in the playoffs so far. Honestly, I don’t think he could be playing worse for a player of his skill level. At least Malkin creates a scoring chance every once in a while.

  227. Gene-Zo says:

This team does not deserve to win this series. If you can’t hold a 3-0 lead and play 3/4ths of the game in your own end, you’re not a playoff caliber team. You can blame your choice of individuals, but this was truly a team loss.

  228. Purple Moose says:

What exactly does Coach One Plan Dan do? This team doesn’t even compete and who didn’t know that Columbus was going to tie the game about half way through the second period and for both OTs to end as quickly as they did.

Is the only way to finally get rid of this guy is for the team to lose in the first round. Would love to be a fly in the dressing room tonight to hear the words of wisdom from Coach One Plan Dan in between periods and then after this game.

  229. Milo Hamilton says:

Since the Olympics really. The whole team has been crap since then.

  230. Florida Steeler says:

I am beginning to see why Crosby is Cindy in Philly.

  231. Breakthestreak says:

Crosby left his game in Sochi! Guess the gold is what he wanted more

  232. Milo Hamilton says:

Without question, one of the worst losses in franchise history.

  233. Dom says:

MAF saved 40+ shots. Why is he getting all the blame?

  234. GAWTS2009 says:

Beyond frustrated with this pens “team”

  235. Rbilak says:

Tonight’s 3 excuses of the game

    1. MAF’s shrink saw too many patients this year

    2. Sid needs Duper

    3. Long wat to travel for Pens.

Good teams do not lose 3-0 Goals. Fire HCDB tonight. Tonight

  236. Breakthestreak says:

Not sure Disco says much to team. Ever. He has no fire. Probably tells the team when the plane is leaving and leaves the dressing room

  237. TJ says:

You seem to forget that the only one that seems to say anything in the locker room is Scuderi.

The flower has officially bloomed. Can’t totally blame him for the 3rd goal but you could basically see it in his face as he skated off after giving up that softie in OT.

Barry Trotz did a hell of a job in Nashville where Shero was once Asst GM.

  238. Andrew says:

From the 6:30 mark of the 3rd period the Penguins allowed two shots on goal, one was the goal.

  239. Rbilak says:

Fire Dan tonight. Wake this so-called Team up. Gutless.

  240. TJ says:

Only thing that would make it worse would have been this happening to the Flyers.

  241. TJ says:

    Ugh. Against the Flyers

  242. Rbilak says:

Yes, the classic MAF letdown goal. Now what? Let the excuses begin.

  243. theplanisworking says:

I said this team could not afford to lose tonight.
    3-0 lead, blown.

Now, the teams are tied going back to Pittsburgh, Columbus has life, and they believe. Columbus has outplayed the Pens for the majority of this series.

Like Milo said, cannot wait for the excuses tomorrow.
    Just a mess.

  244. d says:

BUCKLE UP BUTTERCUP! Things are starting to get interesting for Disco Dani and THE GREAT ALL IN ray shero :)

  245. TJ says:

That’s all Columbus needed. Your avatar is a prime example of what it means to have a victory in hand and blow it.

  246. J Walter Weatherman says:

When we look back in 5 or 10 years after the window has completely closed on this team’s title chances, history will tell us that Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma have completely ruined a potential dynasty. Unfortunately, the people in charge either can’t see it or don’t care.

It may seem extreme to make such a statement when the series is tied and the Pens still have home ice advantage in the series, but any fan with hockey sense realizes that this team’s absolute ceiling is the ECF. Given the talent level, this is a sad indictment of the leadership of the team from the top down.

  247. AKC says:

This Pens squad makes it really tough to be a Pens fan. So much listless, stupid, undisciplined hockey. Fleury will get blame, but he is the only reason it wasn’t 6-3 in the third. The whole team played well for 10 minutes and then stopped. Pathetic. All we can do is hope they get it together for game 5…

  248. Florida Steeler says:

Ray Shero is totally responsible for this roster that thinks because they walk on the ice–they will win.

  249. hockeymonster says:

We didnt generate a lot either. They outshot us in the 3rd and 14-8 if you include OT.

  250. Milo Hamilton says:

That goal was positively Barrasso-esque. Was that Tommy Fitzgerald ?

  251. d says:

    Andrew (Mr. CORSI)

Michel Therrin and his Canadians sweep and the Pens and Disco Dani are fighting for their playoff lives :) Just Sayin :)

  252. DJ says:

Wrong. Take a gander at the play again.

Fleury commits to tracking it behind the net well before Jackets forwards even hit our blue line. Kunitz splits to right wall for outlet. Scuds go left into the corner. Stemp out for a leisurely skate (not even a single stride) over our blue line and does . . . well, nothing.

Totally on Fleury initially. Sid late to front of crease and fans on centering pass.

  253. Breakthestreak says:

But do you think Mario and company would fire Shero? Or even Disco? He seems pretty hands off in terms of his involvement. But maybe if attendance falls he would do something. (Maybe)

  254. Mike says:

The reason Fluery gets the blame is cause he deserves it. He consistently makes poor decisions with the puck and lets in ridiculous soft goals at the worst times. This ain’t about one game, it’s about the last 5 years.

  255. TJ says:

Can you use a compliance buyout on a HC? I would use both our buyouts… Bylsma first and Flukey right behind him.

  256. tomh says:

how can we be suprised? this is the same team as last year. they are soft to play against and the players dont like to get dirty to score goals. the joke is on us for expecting a different result. the islanders should have beat the pens last year. the team is not built for the playoffs. get used to it unless they overhaul the roster

  257. TJ says:

    Can Ike Davis play goalie?

  258. Purple Moose says:

    Radical reactions:
    – Fire Coach One Plan Dan tonight
    – Strip Crosby of the C on his sweater and don’t give it to
    – Trade for a goalie between now and Saturday

  259. DJ says:

    David Volek’s nephew.

  260. Purple Moose says:

  261. Sarah says:

One or the other should have been gone last year. Keeping them both completely ridiculous.

Hope MAF can get a fresh start somewhere else. I’ll miss him!

Meanwhile, expect Disco back next year. Unless the top dogs decide to can RS too.

  262. d says:

This one is going to leave a mark

  263. TJ says:

    Therrien won a cup yet?

  264. DJ says:

Where the h#ll is the shootout when you need it?

  265. Andrew says:

Well, he got the best 20 game sustained stretch out of Fleury, maybe he should be the psychologist.

  266. hockeymonster says:

    Silver lining:

Nisky just lost 200k on his next contract.

  267. Sarah says:

He shouldn’t. But you can’t let in a knuckler from that distance in OT or ever. Can’t happen at this level.
Too bad, i really like the kid, but I suspect he has lost the fan base here. I think it will be hard for him to stay. Hope to be proven wrong!

Unfortunately, most of the fan base is still OK w Bylsma, but whatever. Broken record here.

  268. d says:

Hey, on a brighter note there are seats still available for the next game in Pittsburgh. They start at 87 bucks! I hope the sell out streak is not in jeopardy :)

  269. Sarah says:

  270. d says:

Are we counting the one Disco Dani is taking all the credit for??? :)

  271. hockeymonster says:

Memo to Russell Crowe aka maximus decimus maridius:

    I am not entertained!

  272. Sarah says:

What poor decision with the puck did you see?

  273. Milo Hamilton says:

As the media rallies behind their chosen goalie & proceeds to tell you that he is the only reason the Penguins are in this series at all, please note these stats – Marc Andre Fleury is 12th in both goals against average & save percentage of the 17 goalies that have played in the playoffs.

  274. Andrew says:

Haha, if every failure is Bylsma’s fault it is only logical to appropriation credit to him for the success.

  275. After the first period, the Pens were awful. Let’s hope they can beat Columbus somehow although I don’t know after this.

  276. Breakthestreak says:

True, the Flower is great in the shoot out. Just lousy in 3rd periods and playoffs

  277. Rbilak says:

When the seats are empty, every owner notices. One or both will be gone.

  278. Sarah says:

Barrasso brought in the playoffs consistently.
I would not compare the two.

  279. Mike says:

Much higher than i would have guessed.

  280. theplanisworking says:

    + a whole bunch.

Oh well, there is always next year.
Hope everyone enjoys another offseason of Bylsma, Shero, and Fleury.

    Everyone have a great night.
My hair isnt on fire, it’s all gone.

  281. DJ says:

Bad final 25 seconds and then OT tonight.

Beyond that, he has played very well overall.

  282. And as for the Pirates, well, they didn’t show any more offense tonight than the Pens did after the first period.

  283. Sarah says:

Yeah you have to actually watch the games.

  284. Rbilak says:

Did Peyton Crosby or Peyton Malkin score tonight?

  285. Karen22 says:

    It’s 10:39….anyone been fired yet?

  286. d says:

    Andrew (Spock):

Appropriation as defined by Webster’s : something (as money) set aside by formal action for a specific use.

So, no, that would not be logical :)

  287. Sarah says:

I think they’ll win. They will muddle through on talent. Hopefully MAF rebounds.

They’ll get obliterated next round of course, but a win over the BJs will be enough to keep the status quo going for another year of Sid and Geno’s prime.

    Quite depressing actually.

  288. Mike says:

yes, status quo is a depressing thought.

  289. DJ says:

Hard to tell tonight which team is the seasoned, battle-tested vets and which is the youngest in the league.

  290. Milo Hamilton says:

It really is. I don’t want them to lose, but if A byproduct of losing is real change we all might be better off. Let’s face it, this ain’t working. And another thing, I hope we find out that Sid is hurt because the alternative is really troubling.

  291. Andrew says:

For the last 15 minutes of 3rd the Penguins executed one the best defensive stretches of the season that was undone by one mistake. The 2nd period was a debacle, the 3rd was not.

  292. Milo Hamilton says:

  293. hockeymonster says:

Only one explanation for sloppy offense. Penalties and bad calls were an issue early but not the 3rd. I really hope disco didn’t do what i think he did. Really do…

  294. Andrew says:

That should read appropriate, I struggle to conjugate verbs.

  295. d says:

    Sorry, still not logical!

  296. Mike says:

what do you think he did?

  297. Sarah says:

I’m tired of arguing that they put in enough of a less-than-60 minute effort that….I dunno, something wasn’t their fault.

This is what we are reduced to? THe team is a joke, they haven’t played a full game since anyone can remember.

They have their pants lit on fire by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Let’s just stop and call a spade a spade.

This team needs to be blown up, starting at the top.

  298. Mike says:

Agreed, but who blows it up? Not the same guys who put this team together.

  299. JD says:

I’m shocked, plan. Usually you’re so full of optimism after a tough loss. You’re always a ray of golden sunshine when the rest of the fans have gloomy clouds over their heads. Please don’t tell me you’ve lost faith??? No, plan, no!

If we can’t turn to you to cheer us up, where do we turn?? We’re all doomed.

  300. Sarah says:

You’re right, Mario has to finally get sick of it for something to change. But I think the problem is Mario’s desire for the team to play the way he wishes would work in the NHL, is a large part of the reason why the Pens have become so soft and direction-less.

  301. Andrew says:

Try assign then. Look if you want to believe that Therrien is a good coach fine, but it is completely asinine for Pens fans to bemoan the lack of puck possession when Therrien plays one of the worst puck possession systems know to man, getting consistently out shot is not a sustainable formula for winning. It can work for stretches when you get elite goal tending but goal tending is volatile, if who want to limit goals limit shots, control the puck.

  302. Mike says:

Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

  303. Andrew says:

If the team needs to be blow up, they are not a very good team, the question follows why are they expected to win if they are not very good?

Not saying I disagree, there have been some atrocious personnel decisions, but if the team is so bad why are we frustrated when they lose.

  304. hockeymonster says:

Told forwards to get to the dots for stretch pass and chip to speed.

  305. hockeymonster says:

    Columbus Van Slyke, columbus.

  306. theplanisworking says:

    Save it, troublemaker.

  307. hockeymonster says:

DJ made good point about shootouts too. Made some hay in standings there.

  308. d says:

The numbers do not lie! Montreal sweeps into the second round against a much better Tampa Bay team. The Pens have all they can handle and then some against a much weaker opponent. Its obvious that MT’s system is doing something right. And, well, Disco Dani is struggling…yet again! Oh yeah, goaltending is one word.

  309. hockeymonster says:

In coach therriens defense they looked quite smooth moving the puck against tampa.

  310. Mike says:

what, you thought they would dump and forecheck? Maybe cycle and wear down Columbus’s D Men

  311. hockeymonster says:

Kinda….yeah. If not carry it in with speed and numbers. Like in the 1st and in game 3.

  312. Sarah says:

Never said they were that good, not the way they are
    schemed,coached, or rostered.

Have always said that Bylsma’s personnel decisions absolutely minimize what we have, and put players in the least good position to succeed.

Can’t say that it isn’t frustrating to watch tho!

    Only human.

  313. DJ says:

I’m not exonerating him. Just stating fact on his overall play over four games.

Take a look at my post @ 10:21 above on the tying goal.

  314. Rbilak says:

Well put Milo, his regular season stats are middle of the road. He is part of problem not part of solution. Yes the team did not play great, but the Classic MAF let down goal with a minute left ended the game. His teammates knew, the fans knew, everyone but Shero and Dan knew. Then we hear Mario went to comfort him. How about no more cuddling his fragile but. Truth time, tough love. Poor MAF, he wondered out f the net, yet once again and something bad happened. We have seen the repeat over and over again. Roll out the excuses for poor MAF. Talk about how he rebounds, he only gives up goals when they don’t matter blah blah blah. A high school goalie stops overtime goal. An AHL goalie stops last minute goal.

  315. Andrew says:

So then, Therrien loses in 6 to Detroit, Bylsma beats Detroit in 7, Bylsma > Therrien, right? If you are making definitive statements from four game samples I’m not going to be able to convince the amount of randomness and chance the predominates in sports.

  316. hockeymonster says:

Both were different seasons and situations. Just pointing out recent history with tampa series and definitely not making any definitive statements.

  317. Milo Hamilton says:

Can’t sleep. Can’t look at a puck or a baseball, too disgusted. Hello LaMarcus Aldridge & Chandler Parsons.

  318. Andrew says:

No, I agree, I follow some frustrating sports teams and the Penguins are the worst because for me they lure me in and give me a bit of hope, then they chase a puck behind the net with 25 seconds left and the net empty.

  319. Andrew says:

Hockey I was referring to d. But I might have to rethink my position, Therrien did get a .933 sv% from Fleury in the playoffs something he has never equaled since.

  320. d says:

So, using your line of reasoning, Disco Dani’s sample size from his “Cup” year was what, 30 or so games??? How can you base anything substantial from that?

  321. Glen says:

    Yeah, all that.

You can take 75% of the Pens roster and it ought to be an outright Cup favorite. Then you see our coach minimize our potential in every way he possibly can; you see him learn nothing from past mistakes; you see him do absolutely nothing to change up the pattern of us being outworked and outplayed by a Columbus team short of two of their top three D-men and their best power forward… to the extent that we could not break out of our own D for 40 minutes straight; you see that we did nothing to switch up our break out, did nothing to overload when the Jackets chipped in the puck so as to offer protection for our D-men; we did not mix our forward lines at any time during this spell where we could not manufacture any kind of offense. Bylsma did nothing – he just hoped we would “get to out game”, with it being obvious that Richards had taken that game away. We were left hoping that the most loopy playoff goalie in the world would stay stellar throughout, and like so many times before, when it was most crucial that he stay solid, he blows up in spectacular fashion.

Oh, we have many problems on the Pens. We also have the basics to be a great, great team looking at the roster. Only we haven’t integrated enough of the youngsters that ought to have created cap-room to fill out the team with quality, and Ray has gotten NOTHING right since dealing Goligoski.
That is why it is the more frustrating that we’re going to be into year 5 of squandering the core to having a monkey behind the bench. I hate him even more than I hate the yellow bastards who comprise the majority of the people covering this team – sucking up to the organization to stay in their good graces. If there’d been real media in Pittsburgh, Bylsma would have been run off years ago.

  322. Mirosurabu says:

I miss the team that won with Miroslav Satan as a fourth-liner.

I want this one to just…go away.

  323. J Walter Weatherman says:

Good game and good basketball, which only happens in the playoffs in the nba

  324. Mike says:

Milo posted his stats above. For 5 years running, Fluery has come up small when it has mattered most. It’s not about 1 game or 1 goal. It’s about someone who appears to have lost his confidence. He looks like he is just waiting for this still to happen.

This don’t exonerate the other players and/or the coach. This is a dysfunctional team. What looks good on paper doesn’t work on the ice.

  325. hockeymonster says:

We also had sid n geno on entry level contracts back then. So much self inflicted non sense…dont know where to begin.

  326. Mike says:

I wish I had written this. I understand that monkeys can learn so I’m not sure that’s the proper analogy.

  327. Andrew says:

No clue where this will land.

No, I generally thing too much blame/praise is placed on coaches, personnel decision are more important. However you have a natural experiment were two coaches are given the same team in the same season and achieve far different results, I think that suggest something about both coaches. Possess the puck, outshot opponents, win games.

Generally success = talent + luck and greater success = a little more talent + a lot more luck.

  328. hockeymonster says:

Oh i have had and still have my personnel gripes but in my textbook, strategic mistakes are self inflicted events that aren’t connected to luck. I have thoughts that expand on this but really really don’t want to get into it.

  329. Jay says:

And the hits keep coming……Columbus OT goal is number 1 on ESPN’s Top 10

  330. DJ says:

Except for the OT goal tonight, I would normally agree. However, I’m not getting a lack of confidence vibe from him this series. He made a very stupid decision and it undid 59:35 of solid play.

On the last 40 seconds of play, there was zero urgency. Kunitz was on the right wall waiting for the outlet. Stemp was coming down center ice at Rockefeller Center on his leisurely Sunday skate. Scuds was wandering off to the left corner while two CBJs blew by him. And Sid was waiting for the puck retrieval and pass for his empty-netter.

  331. hockeymonster says:

Ok so know that i’ve stewed a bit came to conclusion that we were a bit indecisive in how we wanted to run the clock out. Seemed like we had the right mindset but missed a few passes that killed rushes and at times cheated up ice leaving dmen without necessary support. Columbus gave us chances to go to D to D an extra time or 2 so forwards could come back but we were in somewhat of a rush to go north just for the sake of going north. No numbers or speed, just one token forechecker due to us simply dumping puck out. If we went D to D that extra time to give forwards a chance to wind it up we could do what we did in 1st period and game 3.

Basically we went into chip and chase mode instead of playing to our strengths like we’ve been doing.

A total disgrace to put it mildly.
I didn’t watch the whole game, but when I did, I think I heard Crosby’s name mentioned once.
    Mind boggling….
