  1. Tom P. says:

Looking for a silver lining, the Pirates are 9-15. Last year, they went 11-17 from August 9 – September 8, a stretch that ended with an inspiring 4-game losing streak in which they were outscored 35-12. On the other hand, that team had a track record of success up to that point. By playing poorly in April, the Pirates are not giving themselves much margin for error the rest of the way this year.

    No talk of losing.
    No talk of Polanco.
    No talk of the Pens.
    No talk of the injuries.

    Bucs just need to win.
    Nothing fancy.
    Just a win.

That doesn’t make any sense. How can we have a thread about the buccos and not talk about the pens?

    Okay, no Pens talk.

    Caps fired Oates and McPhee.

  16. I thought today was Saturday.

  17. JAL says:

I would add Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty

  18. JohninOshkosh says:

    1. Nowhere Fast. The Smiths.
    2. Treatment Bound. The Replacements.

  19. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    Huge Replacements fan!

  20. Good to have you back, John. Lord knows we lost enough good people on here.

  21. Karen22 says:

  22. Karen22 says:

You might be right about that!!

  23. Karen22 says:

Sounds of Silence – Simon & Garfunkel

  24. Karen22 says:

Right Field – Peter, Paul & Mary

  25. Ha! Lunchie, Munchie and Tabby.

  26. Debaser says:

I’ll also add “Unsatisfied” and “Can’t Hardly Wait” from the ‘Mats.

  27. Jandy says:

    Welcome home, Oshie :)

  28. Jandy says:

  29. Jandy says:

Pffft! I’m talkin about the Pens!!

  30. Jandy says:

Are they hurt? I was away yesterday and now I am out of touch :/

  31. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks, guys.

My wife wanted me to be electronics free for the week while on vacation. I snuck away to catch only a few periods of hockey at the lounge. Huddled around the CBC feed were me and bunch of Bostonian, Winnipegian and Torontoan men desperately trying to get a hockey fix before their wives found out.

Didn’t see a single period of any Pens or Wild games. Lost track of baseball completely. Never had any feelings either way about the Bruins. Now, I can honestly say that I am not a fan.

  32. hockeymonster says:

So quick question, all those people on the list actual confirmed readers of the blog?

  33. JohninOshkosh says:

Game is on Fox Sports 1, which apparently exists.

  34. Nancy52 says:

But they are still showing Angels at Yankees. Have to finish a Yankees game of cousrse.
I guess there is Fox Sports 2 as well.

  35. Jandy says:

    Yes, indeed.

  36. Jandy says:

Wait…the honorary ones aren’t readers…they were nominated for honorary members.

  37. hockeymonster says:

So all this time I’ve an arrogant, obnoxious a**hole with Mario, the Great one and EJ reading? And the former mayor? And Doc and Lange?

  38. cmat0829 says:

It’s not Marte’s fault that he is miscast as a leadoff hitter, but if he is going to be in that position, he needs to stop swinging to pull everything over the fence… that approach gets you way out in front of the offspeed and leads to lots of swings and misses.

  39. Jandy says:

LOL you wanna clarify who the arrogant #zzhole is?

  40. hockeymonster says:

Gladly, so all this time I’ve been an arrogant, obnoxious a**hole with Mario, the Great one and EJ reading? And the former mayor? And Doc and Lange?

  41. Thundercrack says:

So I guess you not so bad after all Daq.

    Viva The Replacements!!

  42. Chuck H says:

This Pirate team is a disgrace to Pittsburgh and a disgrace to MLB. How many more pitchers are they going to ruin by not giving them run support. Last night’s game was a horror story for true Pirate fans. I was once one of those, but I can no longer watch or root for a team who, apparently, can’t hit any pitcher they face, righty or lefty. They had chances to score but couldn’t get even one run when the bases were loaded and only one out. The least they needed was a fly ball to the outfield, but could only hit into DPs. Good teams find ways to win-bad teams find ways to lose. This is a team of losers. GO, STEELERS!!!

  43. Thundercrack says:

The song I prefer right now is ‘Land of Hope & Dreams’ – Bruce Springsteen.

  44. Patrick(ri) says:

Some things are so apparent that words fail, such as Martin limping around yesterday. I would put Mate in lead-off in the same category. If you put him at the top,at least stick him right in front of Cutch, where might have a chance.

  45. Patrick(ri) says:

    How about “glory days.”

  46. Jandy says:

LOL but you’re the funniest arrogant, abnoxious *zzhole I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading ;)

  47. So a guy wearing #70 is going to stifle us today?

    Spring Training redux.

  48. Jandy says:

Only fair weather fans quit on their team

  49. You missed less than nothing baseball wise.

  50. Jandy says:

    about the same hockey wise.

  51. Chuck H says:

It was Marte’s fault that he was running toward home plate on a ball hit to the pitcher. He was not forced to run on that play with nobody out and a man on first. He has done this more than once before.

  52. The Gunner says:

6 up 6 down so far today. Maybe today ‘s national telecast will be a no hitter for St. Louis

  53. Chuck H says:

Are you a fair weather fan too?

  54. Jandy says:

That question does not merit a reply. :)

  55. Patrick(ri) says:

These announcers are a bit chatty, but the “wife in tears” story was kind of nice.

  56. JohninOshkosh says:

Might get to see a perfect game.

  57. The Gunner says:

Now up to 9 up & 9 down. And Lyons threw only 9 pitches this inning. This is starting to smell bad.

  58. Patrick(ri) says:

I think DK should give Morton some practice interviews — a bit stiff under national spotlight.

  59. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    We agree on that Viva!

  60. Patrick(ri) says:

Wow! Starting to think E. Bowser is right about Bonds and his karma.

  61. Yeah, I’m a fair-weather fan. That’s why I have “Raise the Jolly Roger” on my avi.

And that’s why I post Polanco stats, along with ones from others in the farm system.

This actually isn’t a team of losers, Chuck. Basically the same team that won 94 and 3 last season.

    This season ain’t over yet.

  62. JohninOshkosh says:

    What happened to Frank?

Left the room for a moment.

  63. Karen22 says:

Doesn’t exist in my household – that’s probably not a bad thing at the moment.

  64. Jandy says:

Well said Revvie :) (See, you’re nicer than EYE am)

  65. Karen22 says:

I see Marte as a total airhead with buckets of talent and potential, which he may never realize because he’s a total airhead. :(

  66. Barb says:

So I take a phone call and now Pimentel is pitching. What the heck happened to Frankie?

  67. Karen22 says:

But the weather IS rather fair today…

  68. Brandie says:

    Now Liriano out. :(

Hey Jandy…did you see the story about the 1969 Shelby?

  69. Brandie says:

    Possible elbow situation.

  70. Karen22 says:

Oh, man – we’re dropping like flies (THEIR flies, unfortunately)! If Frankie’s out this early, it’s not a Convenience List problem.

  71. JohninOshkosh says:

  72. The Gunner says:

    The smell is getting worse

  73. Patrick(ri) says:

3 guys need to step way up — Pimental, Cumpton & Locke.

  74. Patrick(ri) says:

    Single to right?

  75. Brandie says:

    I know Twenty-two, I know. (SMH)

  76. Lad 9 says:

I am guessing that Frankie strained the dreaded oblique. They were poking his side a little bit. Praying it is not the elbow.

  77. Karen22 says:

WOW!! This team is a disaster not even WAITING to happen!

  78. Lad 9 says:

I saw that story and thought of Jandy. Was the buyer from the metropolis of Philipsburg, home of the 63 inch stick of dynamite? :)

  79. Brandie says:

Fat Adams with an infield single. The bases are drunk with humanity!

  80. Jandy says:

Sure Sistah, hubby’s been watching for that since February. He loves that car, but we didn’t have $285.000

  81. Brandie says:

My husband and father in law know the guy who bought it pretty well. We get our coal from him.

  82. Jandy says:

Bowser is right more than he is given credit for. :)

  83. Brandie says:

    Actually Philipsburg.

  84. Jandy says:

That was a nice play by Walker to stop the ball, tho

  85. Jandy says:

    Yeah! Stormy blows them off!

  86. Brandie says:

    DAMN STOLMY!!! :)

  87. Patrick(ri) says:

    STFD, Molina!

  88. Barb says:

I love it when Molina is silenced.

  89. The Gunner says:

Don’t forget to add the offense to your list of individuals who need to step up. This is not looking too promising.

  90. Jandy says:

    wa Hooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  91. Patrick(ri) says:

Has Clint named Melacon as his temp closer?

  92. Jandy says:

That’s a lotta coal for that car ;)

  93. Jandy says:

Good to see you Sistah :)

  94. Brandie says:

    J HAY with the single.

  95. Jandy says:

So, we have 2 on and no outs…amazing

  96. Patrick(ri) says:

Good lord, did I just see a full swing with less than two outs? Clint misplace his book?

  97. Jandy says:

  98. Barb says:

    Way to go Cutch!!!!

  99. Brandie says:

Wow…it is not against the law to actually drive in a runner in scoring position!

  100. The Gunner says:

the hibernation looks like it could be over

  101. Jandy says:

woop woop!!! Gabby with a trip, trip, triple!!!

  102. Brandie says:

  103. Barb says:

    Yes Gaby!!!!!!!!!!!!

  104. Jandy says:

    LMAO! GMTA Sistah :)

  105. Thundercrack says:

    We are pounding #70!!!

  106. Patrick(ri) says:

Now the mini test. Can they get this run across with no outs?

  107. Jandy says:

    See?? I told ya, we’re sistahs :)

  108. cmat0829 says:

so good to see some runs, but that should have been a double and goes to third on the throw home.

  109. Barb says:

    Tabby comes through.

  110. Patrick(ri) says:

    A+ for Tabby.

  111. Brandie says:

    Tabata comes through!

  112. Thundercrack says:

Tell Polanco to unpack his bags.

But Locke might need some help packing.

  113. Brandie says:

  114. The Gunner says:

Let’s hope this is the start of something good

  115. Brandie says:

    New song…Rufus and Chaka Khan…

    Tell Me Something Good!

  116. Brandie says:

Looks like a distinct possibility 21Gunner Salute!

  117. Jandy says:

I’m working on a bid for hubby for a dentist office, now the dogs want out…hold it down, yinz mateys!

  118. cmat0829 says:

This could indeed be locke’s opportunity to get back on the horse…. I also think Pimentel deserves a shot at some point but with Cumpton and likely Locke in the rotation, we will need our long men waiting in tow … so my money is on Locke but I would not be disappointed to let Stolmy have the spot and figure out some way to get Mazarro up here.

  119. Brandie says:

    JHAY flashing the leather!

  120. Brandie says:

    Will do Captain!

  121. cmat0829 says:

OK, time for me to admit I was wrong… I have been pretty critical of JayHey, was in favor of him being jettisoned two weeks ago or so, but I will take my crow grilled with a side of mango chutney if you please.

He hustles, brings a lot of energy, and can adequately play defense everywhere but catcher and 1B. I think it’s hard to be productive in only a pinch hitting role, so I think Clint needs to try to get JayHey in there periodically for a start to keep him ready to hit.

  122. scapper says:

“LOL but you’re the funniest arrogant, abnoxious *zzhole I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading”

That was from earlier this afternoon….Jandy, I’m hurt!!! I thought I wore that title belt! Guess I gotta try harder, haha.

  123. Jandy says:

Between the two of you, yinz keep me laughing, scapper ;)

Here’s a :* for your hurt (boo boo)

  124. Jandy says:

It’s a #snapshot, but yeah J-Hay sure is looking good today.

  125. Brandie says:

Dizziness and flu like symptoms for Frankie. Whew!

  126. Andrew says:

    Liriano with flu like symptoms?

  127. Patrick(ri) says:

Agreed, esp about increased pt. Why not a few more at ss?

  128. Andrew says:

I am as frustrated as anyone with Marte’s inability to recognize/hit hard breaking pitches but he did they correct thing in that situation, you are more likely to score a run with an out and runners on 1st and 2nd than two outs and a runner on 3rd.

  129. Jandy says:

  130. Patrick(ri) says:

Maybe that has been going around the team? Sure have played like it. Now, breathe on Molina.

  131. Thundercrack says:

    That’s good news

  132. Jandy says:

really? Well, flu bug is better than strained something or other I guess

  133. Jandy says:

  134. Jandy says:

  135. Barb says:

I agree have Frankie and Molina room together.

  136. Brandie says:

    And Matt Holiday!

  137. Patrick(ri) says:

Nothing like a few hits with RISP to lighten up the atmosphere around here!

  138. Brandie says:

Jared “1 Pitch ” Hughes puts the bow on the inning.

  139. Jandy says:

    Good job, Lurch!

  140. Patrick(ri) says:

Had a cat we named Lurch — walked just like Hughes.

  141. Jandy says:

  142. Andrew says:

If Allen Craig makes a play in right, it wasn’t that hard.

  143. Jandy says:

    No free rides, Lurch! GrrRr!

  144. The Gunner says:

J-Hey is a good type of guy to have around. He usually provides some type of spark.

Glad to hear Papa Francisco is lot having arm issues.

  145. Patrick(ri) says:

Make Clint listen to this former pitcher & his perspective on loving a s. Bunt.

  146. Now that’s more like it. I went out to finish the lawn and we’re up 4-1. Maybe I better go back out, like Jim on the Pens games.

Good to hear Frankie only has a temporary ailment.

  147. tdb1977 says:

Yes. Grilli has a strained oblique and Martin has a hamstring and hip issue. Martin is back in PGH to have the hip/hamstring looked at.

  148. Brandie says:

    Three cheers for nausea!

  149. The Gunner says:

    And intestinal issues

  150. tdb1977 says:

  151. Thundercrack says:

Tabby busting his *ss. He knows about Polanco

  152. The Gunner says:

    Tabby is much improved

  153. Jandy says:

Tabby’s turning into a fine right fielder :)

  154. JohninOshkosh says:

Tabby kicking some serious buttocks today. In the field and at the plate.

  155. Jandy says:

    haha yeah!

  156. tdb1977 says:

Here is something then…Walk the Plank!

  157. Patrick(ri) says:

The guys are stepping up. Very nice catch.

  158. Brandie says:

    Hip Hip Hooray!

  159. Jandy says:

    Nice snag, Walker :)

  160. Brandie says:

A Jose Tabata sighting! An offense sighting! A JHAY sighting! Maybe Frankie oughta take ill more often! ;)

  161. Baywatch says:

Good job, Stolmy! Bringing back that SUNNY day!

  162. pattonbb says:

Who’s that guy in RF wearing Tabata’s jersey?

  163. I like J-Hay and always have, but let’s not stretch it and say he’s adequate in the field anywhere. I agree though, that he’s a spark plug and a good guy to have on the team.

  164. Lad 9 says:

  165. :D

I think he’s had a brain transplant. Or maybe a heart. (Not the physical organ).

  166. Brandie says:

    WOO HOO! 6-1!!

  167. Brandie says:

  168. #67’s ERA just went above zero.

They can run these linemen out all day as far as I’m concerned.

  169. Brandie says:

    Sidney Crosby!!

  170. Patrick(ri) says:

Big hits this inning as I was already getting paranoid about who was left if Melacon happened to have a bad day?

  171. Tom Armstrong says:

Who are these guys that scored 6 runs?

  172. Brandie says:

This will put a smile on your lips Revvie!!!!!

  173. At least Choate has a pitcher’s number not a guard or a tackle.

  174. Lad 9 says:

Plus they have a nose tackle playing 1B!

  175. Indeed it will Brandanissimo!

  176. Barb says:

Now let’s see if we can continue with the hitting tomorrow. Yea I know wishful thinking. Wainwright pitching.

  177. Patrick(ri) says:

    Does Melancon need work?

  178. Patrick(ri) says:

    Apparently not.

  179. Andrew says:

I think he was already warming up with the 3 run lead, you know, you have to use closer in a save situation.

  180. Andrew says:

I really love this analysis, the Pirates starting pitcher getting injured and leaving the game was the key to the win.

  181. Tom Armstrong says:

    Wahoo!!!! Finally!!!

  182. Brandie says:

    W For The Buccos!!!

    (Channeling Buggee!)

  183. Lad 9 says:

Raise it! Nice win in overcoming adversity. Now let’s go Pens for the sweep tonight!

  184. The Gunner says:

Good to get a win, Lucky!

  185. Tom Armstrong says:

Let’s string 3 or 4 wins together now boys. Now we need our Pens to get their win in game 5!

  186. FYI

Mr. Unmentionable flied out to the warning track in his first AB.

  187. Baywatch says:

All is forgiven!! “If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can’t I paint you?”

  188. Amen Brother Gunner, Amen.

  189. Baywatch says:

  190. The Gunner says:

Our ace goes tomorrow, a good chance for the Bucs to take the series.

  191. Brandie says:

    Old 1970’s disco song.

    You can call me Ray,

    You can call me Jay,

But you doesn’t have to call me Johnson!

    Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.

Obscure reference, it’s what I do best.

  192. Karen22 says:

    Indeed squared!!

  193. Karen22 says:

WHEW!! Game uno of a Pittsburgh doubleheader in the books. NOW…TAKE A LESSON, PENS!!!

  194. Thundercrack says:

Polanco strikes out in his second ab. His bat is fast…and he looks like a kid.

I haven’t watched a lot of the game but Locke may be pitching better than the score. 3-0

  195. Walks and scores in his third.

  196. Arriba Wilver says:

Great list! But #6 ruins it. RUINS IT!!!

  197. War_Horse says:

Was I the only one who noticed that the Buccos have abandoned the two guns-in-holster salute that Cutch started this year? The first time Andrew got a hit last night, he held his arms up as if holding the imaginary guns at his side ready to put them in their holsters. He held it there and looked at the dugout, but the players were giving him Zoltan signs. As the game progressed and the Bucs went ahead 4-0, the players started – one by one – to make the Z sign after getting a hit. And each one was laughing as he did it. At the start of the season, Tony Sanchez said in an interview that Cutch invented the two guns-in-holster sign after getting a hit. I thought it was arrogant to say the least and sure to irritate opposing players. Let’s hope it’s gone for good now.
