  3. cmat0829 says:

Tough task ahead, to try to take the series vs. Cards’ ace Wainright.

Looking at the Cards lineup, it is easy to see that this team misses Beltran. I know they are making room for Tavares, who egads, they seem to be waiting until June to call up, but as of right now, this lineup is weaker than it was last year.

Let’s hope our new ace, Volquez, can keep the Cards bats slumbering….

  4. Arriba Wilver says:

Don’t count your Taveres until they hatch.

  5. bpn8pitt says:

    JAL #17

I umpired twice this week, and told all teams ” Please do not have the kids swinging the bats in or near the dugout”.

And when you see the Ryan Braun video, smacking Segura, that’s why I give the speech. Stupid.

  6. Andrew says:

Pirates promote Casey Sadler, option Jared Hughes AAA. I assume they want another long man in the bullpen.

  7. Thundercrack says:

Seems like there is a lot of oblique and hamstring injuries on the majors & minors

  8. Probably right. He’s a starter at Indy, but no room in the rotation right now.

  9. bpn8pitt says:

Man, the Freese-Bourjos trade been a wash so far huh? And not in a good way.

  10. Matt hoffman says:

I wish they would make room for Sadler in the rotation. I have no confidence in a couple of starters at the ‘Burgh right now. I would also like to see Nevin Ashley (C) given a chance at Pittsburgh. He is from Bicknell (My hometown). We have seen what poor defense at that position can do.

    {because NOW is not nearly as important as 6 seasons from NOW}

  12. Brandie says:

I think all of these big time players should come with coupons you can use at Super 2 checkout that will get you a certain percentage off in case of early call up.

  13. JohninOshkosh says:

Your boy, Mike Dunleavy, needs to pull out another rabbit from his hat for the Bulls to stay in this series with the Washington Wizards. That’s right I actually typed “Washington” in reference to a playoff series.

  14. Andrew says:

    Thanks for the out.

  15. Baywatch says:

Brandie, the coupons come with the older players, like Barmey. We used a a coupon with him.

  16. bpn8pitt says:

A few months ago I thought SA-OKC and MIA- Indy were surefire gonna be finals. Be surprised if 2 of them make it now.

  17. theplanisworking says:

Didn’t watch a second of the Pirate game yesterday, and they won.
    Maybe I shouldn’t watch games? ;)

    Need another W today.
    One game at a time.

  18. Baywatch says:

I was flickin’ the channels and saw that, John! I almost expected to see Wes Unseld out there!

  19. bpn8pitt says:

I don’t think Polancos gonna hit like that when he’s up Groat.

  20. scapper says:

Completely unfair slur against the fine Washington sports teams.

Why, I heard that just yesterday Fehr and Ovie had a 3-hole playoff at the end of the team’s annual April golf outing.

  21. bpn8pitt says:

    Dodged a bullet there.

  22. JoeyBats says:

…some BAD Bucco baseball in that inning.

  23. Patrick(ri) says:

    Surely my eyes deceive me?

  24. Patrick(ri) says:

  25. bpn8pitt says:

    …another atrocious bunt…

  26. Andrew says:

I thought with Dusty Baker retired we would see an end to gratuitous bunting in the NL Central.

  27. bpn8pitt says:

    Cost a run too.

  28. T.S. says:

  29. JohninOshkosh says:

    I hate bunting!!!!!!!

  30. JohninOshkosh says:

…and I don’t mean the festive decorative banners!

  31. T.S. says:

Is it me? Or with each passing year as manager, has Hurdle’s propensity increased for putting on the bunt in direct proportion to becoming more defensive in pre- and post-game interviews?

  32. Patrick(ri) says:

Especially hate giving up outs against Wainwright!

  33. bpn8pitt says:

The thing is, I’ve never thought in 2 plus years, his teams have been any good at it.

  34. T.S. says:

I also don’t get the love for Tabata. The guy is brutal. AAAA player.

  35. Patrick(ri) says:

Excellent point. It is a bad choice if you are good at it.

  36. Nate83 says:

Seriously, you are all over the place when it comes to Polanco. You stated all of last year that Travis was crazy for saying the kid could be up as soon as June of this year. Coming out of Spring training you said he had stuff he needed to work on and needed to get a half season of at bats in AAA. Now you are saying they are waiting too long to bring him up. It’s almost as if you are arguing with yourself.

  37. Brandie says:

Are there instances we can Double the coupon value in the case of an emergency? Can we use Groupon?

  38. Baywatch says:

Gonna watch us at bat one more time at bat before the Sunday afternoon nap.

  39. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Bunting: highly effective when executed properly.

  40. Patrick(ri) says:

    Not according to statisticians.

  41. bpn8pitt says:

Weird thing is, I don’t think his Colorado teams bunted that much.

  42. The Gunner says:

This anemic offense needs to come to life & not waste another good pitching performance from Volquez.

  43. J Walter Weatherman says:

It would be nice, but I’d be willing to give them somewhat of a pass against a pitcher of Wainwright’s caliber. He’s one of the best in baseball and even good hitting team’s often fail to produce runs against him. That said, there was no excuse for the poor hitting display against Miller Friday night, whom I think it overrated at this point in his career.

  44. bpn8pitt says:

    Yes. Wainwrights been sick today.

  45. Andrew says:

You know your offense is struggling when your best hitter misses that pitch.

  46. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  47. The Gunner says:

    Good afternoon Walter

Pedro got a nice bloop, too bad Cutch k’d before him. Now it’s up to Walker.

  48. Patrick(ri) says:

Almost any baseball statman you want.

  49. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Wainwright gets every single close pitch….Every one.
    There’s a limit ump!
    Give it a break.

  50. The Gunner says:

The Bucs could be in trouble today

  51. Patrick(ri) says:

Google: is the sacrifice bunt worth it? You will get lots of choices.

  52. Andrew says:

I actually don’t think he has been that good, but I was expecting 11 Ks, bunch of balls pounded into the ground, and one runner reaching 2nd.

  53. bpn8pitt says:

    Good point Mr Walk.

Who DHs this week? Gaby primarily?

  54. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

You brought it up. Though I hear statistically so is a home run.

  55. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Volquez got it back, though not as important of a situation.

  56. JohninOshkosh says:

LA Clippers came out with their warm ups turned inside out. A wonderful statement of solidarity.

Feel badly for Doc Rivers and his team. Terrible distraction for a talented ball club that has the ability to emerge from the West.

  57. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Tough call here. I think it was on the bag when he caught it.

  58. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Well aware of how to Google things, thanks.

  59. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

And now, the runner should score.

  60. Nate83 says:

It’s amazing that guy is still owning a team. This isn’t the first time something like this has come up for him and it’s known around the league what kind of person he is. Being rich doesn’t give you a free pass on ignorance. Doc Rivers if the perfect person to deal with this situation. Class individual that is very respected.

  61. Andrew says:

A runner on 1st and 2nd no outs, is one of the few times the a sac bunt is an good strategy but you have to be successful about 70% of the time for it to be optimal.

  62. The Gunner says:

Put a fork in the Bucs today, there done!

  63. Patrick(ri) says:

Yeah, I think Ike would have been trying to kick the bag. Volquez is getting hosed this inning with bad luck.

  64. bpn8pitt says:

I know his D has been criticized but Tony has done a good job with balls in the dirt today.

  65. The Gunner says:

I think Tony’s defensive shortcomings are more related to throwing

  66. Patrick(ri) says:

I think walk is right. If MLB is going to deal in “too close to call” reviews, they need to upgrade the technology. Opportunity for some tech geeks.

  67. The Gunner says:

The Bucs are really done now. What a lousy showing they have had against the NL Central.

  68. Andrew says:

The ump was not in position to see that, he only looked once Davis caught the ball, but still it is Molina no reason to rush that throw which effectively ended the game.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

If your 2nd baseman would simply turn a routine double play with the catcher running then you wouldn’t need replay to bail you out.

  70. Patrick(ri) says:

Wasn’t Peralta 0-22 , or something like that, coming into this series?

  71. Thundercrack says:

Nobody is saying we’re getting beat by a cheater. Peralta!!

  72. Patrick(ri) says:

Also correct. 2 runs was probably insurmountable, anyway . . .

  73. Patrick(ri) says:

    Somebody grab a cup!

  74. M.L. says:

All Pirates fans (including DK) griping about Peralta – two words: Marlon Byrd. Hypocrites. I don’t like seeing these cheaters play, but let’s accept that Pirates are just as guilty as other teams in this regard. Accept defeat with class today.

  75. bpn8pitt says:

Andrew, your boy NMR took me task for saying this, but I’ve been told by a few people who watched Volquez last year, its all about knowing when to pull the plug on him. When the ball starts rising, time to go get him. What do you and others think?

  76. bpn8pitt says:

Never thought PEDs helped you see the ball better.

And id bet a paycheck Giles used.

  77. Patrick(ri) says:

I was more upset that he snapped out of a horrible slump. I doubt that Byrd is the only guy ever to play for the Pirates with dubious stuff involved.

  78. Andrew says:

That could be true, but Volquez so far is a completely different pitcher this year, the Pirates have cleaned up his fastball command and have him pounding the zone, he is a low walk, low strike, groundball guy so far. I didn’t see what pitch the second homerun was on, but the first was not a terrible pitch, Peralta was sitting curve ball.

Pirates are just a team with little margin for error, and they have made plenty this year.

  79. theplanisworking says:

Well, I see my strategy of not watching games didn’t work today.

We as fans just have to acknowledge that the magic of last season was last season…….. this year the team seems snakebitten. Injuries, close calls, not much going the Bucs way.

Wonder what the FO thinks about this, and what will they do to possibly jump-start the team? Or, is this a ‘bank’ year?

(I know it is only April 27th. The injuries don’t know the date.)

  80. bpn8pitt says:

I understand Volquezs velocity is still good, but I haven’t seen anything from his secondary stuff that’s overpowering.

As a whole he’s pitched well, certainly better than I predicted. But they are in a lot of trouble if he’s their second best pitcher after Cole.

  81. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Terrible…..This team couldn’t hit its way through a 10 year old piece of generic toilet paper.

  82. bpn8pitt says:

    8.5 back…smh.

  83. Andrew says:

I think Volquez lack of fastball command may have made his breaking stuff better or at least play better, Volquez has been fine in his role but he needs to strikeout some batters. The entire staff has to too, next to last in the NL in K/9. While the offense is below average and inconsistent and the starting pitching overall has been worse.

  84. twentytwo22 says:

The Pirates are playing sloppy baseball in all facets of the game, especially defensively. 90-100 losses this year if they don’t correct their mindset.

  85. Arriba Wilver says:

10 year old generic toilet paper was like the Giant Redwoods.

  86. Arriba Wilver says:

  87. Thundercrack says:

My comments earlier were in response to those who were bent out of shape when the cheater Ryan Braun was killing us last week.

  88. Chuck H says:

No room in the rotation? After Cole, who do they have to get anyone out? GO, STEELERS!!!

  89. Chuck H says:

Who, on this Pirate team, is worthy of going to the All-star game? I know each team gets to have at least one player in it, but, come on now, who deserves it from this team of clowns?

  90. Chuck H says:

I agree that a bunt executed properly is smart strategy. It beats a DP any day.

  91. The Gunner says:

    Good evening Charles

The batboy looks like he is doing an outstanding job – he has my vote.

  92. hockeymonster says:

Why don’t they call up polanco? Isn’t he batting .400 or something?

  93. The Gunner says:

    Surely you jest, HM

  94. The Bucs lost again. Smh.

  95. bpn8pitt says:

    Aj had a good start.

  96. Well, at least the Bucs have Monday off before they face the Orioles in two Interleague games, so they’ll have a chance to rest up, lick their wounds, and get their failing act together for the coming month of May. That is, if they can quit falling asleep on the job.

  97. He’s right at .400. He was 1-3 today with a walk and his 23rd RBI.

  98. Josh Bell 2-4 with a HR and 5 RBI for High-A Bradenton today. Hitting .289

  99. The Bucs have 40 more lousy days to call up Polanco, although you’d think they should’ve called him up by now.

  100. The Gunner says:

I am so disappointed by the Bucs performance thus far. Hopefully, they can rebound similar to the 1965 Bucs who ended the season with 90 wins after a 9 W 24 L start.

Don’t mean to put pressure on you but, they need you to leverage your position to help get things back on track.

  101. Well, the Pirates had better get started right now. Especially since they got only 3 hits in today’s loss, Marte has struck out 37 times in 105 at bats, and they’ve scored 2 runs or less in half the 26 games they’ve played this season.

  102. The Gunner says:

I agree, Jim – Marte has been a huge disappointment but he is not the only guilty party. It has been a real team effort.

    So far, they freakin stink.
