    Gametime Forecast: 71°F • Drizzle • 52% PoP

    Go BUCCOS!!!!

  2. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++++

    Crud Norris? LOL

  3. theplanisworking says:

Maybe the Bucs will get their first game in for 4 days.
If these games get rained out ………….

  4. Lad 9 says:

I had to fly through Baltimore last night (and spent quite a lot of time in their leaking airport), and it is a mess down there. If someone spits on the field it might be too wet to play,

  5. 21sthebest says:

Steve Pearce was DFA’d last week by the Orioles, claimed by the Blue Jays, rejected the claim, became a free agent and signed a Major League deal with the Orioles. And he’s in the starting lineup today.

  6. Jim S. says:

The O’s fascination with Pearce continues. He’ll probably kill the Bucs tonight.

  7. Jim S. says:

Assuming they get the games in …

    * I’m calling for Pedro to right the ship tonight. I think he’ll hit a couple of HR and drive in 4-5 runs. My pick to click.

  8. Reading says:

Number of Pirates hits from this lineup batting a collective .103, or number of consecutive rainouts. The World may never know.

  9. NMR says:

    Only in baseball. I think.

  10. theplanisworking says:

Is Camden Yards under sea level like the Superdome?

    What a mess.

  11. Jim S. says:

I was thinking it was right at sea level, plan.

I was there several years back. BoSox were in town, I believe. Enjoyed it very much.

That LF fence looks like it is about 275′ from home plate. Cruz will hit many, many HR this season. If Pedro concentrates on going oppo, it won’t take much to jack a couple out. He just needs to get the ball up a little bit.

  12. Nice Easter story.

  13. cmat0829 says:

I think (maybe it’s more HOPE than THINK) this mini-break will do the Pirates good. They have had 3 full days away from baseball… good to clear the heads, put April behind them, start anew now. Like the lineup shuffle, intrigued by Davis in the 2spot.

The O’s lineup (Pearce, really?) gets pretty weak real quickly, so hoping we can keep them down and score some runs. One thing I do know, it will take more than 2 runs in each game to win, so time to get the bats going.

  14. NMR says:

Orioles lineup has a total of four stolen bases on the year. That’s huge for a Morton/Sanchez battery.

  15. Milo Hamilton says:

    They’ll double that today.

  16. NMR says:

I’ll admit to being farely surprised Hurdle has gone back to Sanchez. I know I’ve seen enough.

But I also don’t get paid to make these calls.

  17. Better stick than Stewart over the long haul?

JRay has some Stewart insight, but he hasn’t been around much lately. Hope he hasn’t taken the low road like Drew and Playoffs.

  18. Milo Hamilton says:

They couldn’t bring him up & sit him. It would make them look like hypocrites.

  19. Lord, no. They’d never want that to happen.

  20. NMR says:

You don’t give Hurdle much credit for the lineups, eh?

  21. The Gunner says:

Pearce has always wreaked havoc against the Pirates. This must be his 3rd or 4th with the Orioles.

I cannot count the number if times I swore at him when he played for the Buccos!

  22. The Gunner says:

    3rd or 4th STINT

  23. Milo Hamilton says:

Wandy got ambushed by AA hitters.

    3.1 IP 4 H 3 ER 3 BB 3 K 74 pitches / 48 strikes – only 1 homer though.

  24. The Gunner says:

    Steve Pearce stinks

  25. The Gunner says:

Wandy’s done, Milo. Cumpton better stay in the rotation.

  26. The Gunner says:

    Jim

I can’t believe Pearce is still around

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

I sympathize with him. Neither are a good option.

  28. Jandy says:

    I’ll drink to that
    (hey, it’s been a while)

  29. Mercy. That’s about his line from the last game he pitched for the Bucs.

  30. Jandy says:

    Oh my!

  31. cmat0829 says:

I think they need the bat at this point, and Tony has been a better bat than Stewart for sure. In a DH, both catchers get a game so not sure why we’d expect any different in terms of today’s lineup. I haven’t seen the Chris Stewart (by reputation).. his D has been rough and I was expecting a smooth very good defensive catcher. I know he has no bat.

  32. cmat0829 says:

No reason to rush, really. Wandy will have to prove it in the extended rehab minor league assignment… that gives Cumpton time to grab the spot.

  33. FlBucco says:

Pretty critical six games stretch coming up for the Bucs – two pretty good opponents. 4 and 2 and they have some life – 2-4 the hole they have dug themselves is getting a bit too deep IMHO.

I would have loved to have seen them bring up Lambo or Polanco – or both – give them a mini tryout to see if they could ignite the offense.

Cannot wait to see how Smizik feel about the “Good Deal Neal” guy batting below the Mendoza line…

  34. NMR says:

    Very true, Milo.

  35. Nate83 says:

I agree Cumpton deserves to keep pitching until he proves he shouldn’t be. Unfortunately more then likely other starters will be needed at some point because of injuries. Hopefully somebody between Locke, Stolmy, Wandy and Sadler is up for the challenge.

  36. Milo Hamilton says:

I hope Casey Sadler is still here for the Bob Nutting Telethon so his wife can answer phones.

  37. bpn8pitt says:

The schedule to me is very intersting this month. Interleague, Cards and Brewers again, couple trips to NY. Crazy west coast trip to finish out the month into June.

  38. Bizrow says:

Anyone know who the PBC brought up for the 26th man? Its gotta be Duke

  39. The Gunner says:

    Is she a looker?

  40. Botherhood of the Redus says:

    haha

  41. cmat0829 says:

after having 3 days off, not sure they need a 26th man. and I know Wehner indicated DHs usually mean bench players get to play, but again, with 3 days off, I think only Stewart needs to play game 2, we can roll with same lineup in game 2 if we want.

  42. Milo Hamilton says:

No 26th man today. It has to be scheduled more than 48 hours in advance.

  43. bpn8pitt says:

Cant be understated, they were hoping he was going to pick up some AJ slack. So far its been a disaster.

Not sure what to say. A year ago, thought they were loaded with pitching depth. Now….

  44. Botherhood of the Redus says:

    you are on fire milo

  45. cmat0829 says:

    dumpster diving Orioles…

  46. Bizrow says:

    Thanks, obviously I didn’t know that ;-0

  47. Jim S. says:

He had back to back 1-2-3 innings for the first two frames. Then, uh oh.

  48. JohninOshkosh says:

I hear the Anthem on my work radio. Must at least gonna start this one. Welcome back, Buccos.

  49. Milo Hamilton says:

Bud Norris is another one of those guys the Pirates turn into Cy Young.

  50. JohninOshkosh says:

    Yes. Come back home, JRay!

  51. Jim S. says:

I think you hit on it with the Baltimore lineup. If he gets run on by these guys … it ain’t good.

  52. The Gunner says:

Frank might be after her, like he was with Garrett Jones’s wife last year

  53. JohninOshkosh says:

    Totally shreds the Buccos.

  54. Thundercrack says:

How does that make them look like hypocrites. They have been saying all along that he needs work with his defense…along with steady playing time. So I can’t tell what that makes them look like.

But I think it shows that Clint needs the bat in the lineup at this point.

  55. JohninOshkosh says:

Ike Davis is my pick to click.

    Love that game, Jim.

  56. The Gunner says:

    Him & Pearce, geez!!

  57. Thundercrack says:

I heard that since it wasn’t a Day/Night double header that they couldn’t bring up the 26th man.

  58. Thundercrack says:

Tony Cingrani goes on the DL for the Reds.

The team that stays the healthiest may end up winning the division.

Of course Braun clubs their shortstop with a bat and Segura has plastic surgery but didn’t go on the DL. ( :-)…just kidding, not wishing harm to anyone)

  59. Baywatch says:

A bomb for Gaby and a bomb for Davis, if you please.

  60. Milo Hamilton says:

Maybe it was just a botox injection.

  61. cmat0829 says:

My pick to click (picks actually) are the Dirty Sanchez’… Tony and Gaby.

  62. At least we won’t get no-hit.

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

They have to lead the league in pitches swung at out of the strike zone.

  64. The Gunner says:

    Gaby is such a stiff

  65. Jim S. says:

Stewart had a rough defensive game, for sure, vs. Cincy.

Then, he came back the next day and threw out Hamilton with ease on a pitchout.

  66. Jim S. says:

    The Hawk.

  67. JohninOshkosh says:

Baltimore has tremendous broadcasters-both TV and radio. Nice baseball community. Wish they were in NL and Nats were in AL.

  68. Jim S. says:

    Merely a flesh wound.

  69. Baywatch says:

I know you’re disappointed by his poor showing there, as I am. But I disagree that he’s a stiff. He seemed to be coming on at the time of the Davis trade. He’s still not the best hitter. But no stiff.

  70. JohninOshkosh says:

They do it on WSCR as well, I think. Love how Hawk interacts with Boers & Bernstein.

  71. cmat0829 says:

hate to be critical, but Gaby HAS to know it is a slider coming there…. why he can’t hold off on that so far out of the zone I don’t know.

  72. NMR says:

There ya go, Jim. The BABIP gods smiled upon Petey.

  73. NMR says:

    Baseball is hard.

  74. Jim S. says:

FWIW, which is sometimes nothing, Norris tossed 24 pitches in inning 1 and Charlie only had 7. Good start there. Not bad if we can’t get into their bullpen fairly early in Game 1 of a DH. We’ll see how it goes from here.

  75. Maybe we can single them to death.

  76. NMR says:

    Bunt!

  77. Jim S. says:

Gaby seems to once again be struggling with RHP, after the 2 early season bombs.

I’m confident he will blister LHP pretty well again this year. #SSS

  78. The Gunner says:

    Bay

He has shown very little in his time here, just my opinion. I will admit he offers more to the Bucs than Gorkys Hernandez would have.

  79. cmat0829 says:

    indeed.

  80. tdb1977 says:

Anybody see the photo of Wandy after he worked his 3.1 innings today? Check this out – https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BmkI_IECEAA9lq9.jpg

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

    That is a foul ball.

My new favorite thing is managers positioning themselves to see into the dugout while stalling with the umps.

  82. JohninOshkosh says:

Oh no, not another debate on bunting. I’m trying to quit. Wearing the bunting patch and everything.

I still have a headache from that spreadsheet thingee 21 posted a few days back. :)

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

Steve Pearce catching up with all guys he played with in the minors that he’s 8 years older than.

  84. NMR says:

    At this point, screw it!

  85. NMR says:

Halfway to being a villain in a Ghost Busters movie.

  86. I agree. I hate it and always have. No better rally killer. Pitchers now are wonderful athletes and can all hit like Cole.

No more like Luke Walker who didn’t know which end of the bat to use.

  87. Chuck H says:

The odds are favoring the Orioles in both games. I’m hoping the bats come to life and the Bucs take both.
Wish in one hand—————-.You know the rest.

  88. cmat0829 says:

why in the world would there be any criticism of marte, in his current state, trying to bunt for a base hit? I know the world loves a good bunt debate, but zero reason to debate Marte trying to bunt for a base hit as it stands now. I’m ok with him putting his body in front of home plate to try to get on base.

  89. NMR says:

Sincerely starting to believe umpires are purposely making this whole replay business unbearable.

    Absolute incompetence.

  90. JohninOshkosh says:

You saberheads have convinced me of the folly of bunting. I’m not a complete dinosaur.

  91. NMR says:

Did he even try to bunt for a base hit?

  92. Jim S. says:

I love when he tries to bunt for hits. He is pretty good at it, IMO. Now, sacrifices are a different thing.

  93. Baywatch says:

No doubt, Gunner, the totality of his work here nothing to write home about.

  94. NMR says:

Good news for Nutting is that if the Pirates continue playing this bad, they’ll have an excuse for continuing to run Jordy Mercer out there instead of Stephen Drew.

  95. Jim S. says:

And maybe next time the gods of non-BABIP shine on him. I’d like to see him launch one.

  96. JohninOshkosh says:

I was just kidding cmat. Bunting for basehits isn’t as controversial with me.

  97. Patrick(ri) says:

    Slow track in left.

  98. Jim S. says:

    Looks a tad puffy.

  99. The Gunner says:

Hilarious, Milo. It’s almost like flunking kindergarten 7 times.

  100. bpn8pitt says:

I had to read that twice. Might have to start worrying about you if they keep playing bad. :)

  101. The Gunner says:

Ha ha! Luke Walker, he never lived up to his expectations. He had a decent year or two.

  102. cmat0829 says:

I am far from a huge Mercer supporter (preferred Barmes for the most part last year) but this is his first extended chance at the starting role and I want to give the guy at least another month or so to get it going…. I will admit I’m not one that thinks Stephen Drew is a panacea, though he clearly is a solid major league SS option…but he is not much more than that — decent, solid, average major league SS.

  103. tdb1977 says:

    Slow track in right center?

  104. cmat0829 says:

    :)

  105. Jim S. says:

Yeah, and I think Stearn and Bowden do a derivation of it on afternoons on the MLB Network Radio.

Hawk has grown on me over the years.

  106. cmat0829 says:

guessing slow track all around given the rain…

  107. Milo Hamilton says:

We traded actual people for Ike Davis ?

  108. Jim S. says:

I loved Ron Santo on Cubs broadcasts, and I cannot stand the Cubs. Not really for his announcing, which was pretty bad, but for how much he loved his Cubbies. I never heard a bad word said about him.

  109. cmat0829 says:

No, not yet. Thornton doesn’t count as an actual person. The PTBNL is ‘significant’ though, according to Sandy Alderson. Ike was way way too anxious there… as was Cutch. Sigh. We are trying to hit a 3R HR with one guy on base, yet again.

  110. NMR says:

Mercer stunk at hitting RHP last year. Mercer stinks at hitting RHP this year.

He is not a starting big league shortstop.

  111. Jim S. says:

    I was at a game as young’un when Luke pitched a 1-hitter.

  112. cmat0829 says:

PEDRO… pulls an outside pitch, just gets it through up the middle for the RBI single…good guys 1, orioles 0.

  113. NMR says:

    Awful trade.

Punted on actually improving the position.

  114. cmat0829 says:

Im not going to disagree….though I don’t think Stephen Drew is as much of the answer that some think he is. Is there Option C?

  115. Jim S. says:

My pick to click, Pedro, is coming through.

I was beginning to think Bud Norris was heading for the 146 pitch, 13 hit shutout today.

  116. cmat0829 says:

Again, not disagreeing per se, but what was the better option available at the time? Morales?

  117. Milo Hamilton says:

Apparently, that was their off season strategy in general.

  118. Jim S. says:

I guess I’m the only guy who says Thornton might amount to something as a middle reliever.

  119. cmat0829 says:

Pirates, perhaps understandably with 3 days off, are much too anxious vs. Buddy boy…. a little patience and we might be able to string some together….

  120. Lad 9 says:

If my memory is correct, the only hit was a home run by the Dodger’s catcher Joe Ferguson.

  121. cmat0829 says:

He may indeed… but we have a stockpile of those types… and no LH 1Bmen.

  122. cmat0829 says:

And is ‘amounting to something as a middle reliever’ the same as ‘failing as a starter and a late-inning reliever’?

  123. He had a couple good seasons if I remember right. But they always gave him a Bronx cheer if he put the ball in play.

Needless to say, he never pinch hit in his career.

  124. JohninOshkosh says:

That’s why they should’ve signed Loney. All you give up is cash. No loss of potential talent.

Moderator, please post this in a 11/2013 or 12/2013 thread.

  125. Jim S. says:

For his minor league career, he has pitched 259 innings, 228 hits, 14 HR allowed, 63 BB, 291 K’s.

I know he has not proven a thing in the big leagues, and I have never even seen the guy pitch except for an inning in ST. But, he strikes a lot of guys out, and does not give up many hits, HR or BB. That’s pretty much what you want in a pitcher.

Maybe his stuff won’t play in the majors. But, I don’t know how sure we can be about that if he hasn’t had a shot.

  126. Stuart says:

Good start with Chuck throwing grounders. Pedro really picked Ike and Cutch up after they failed with man on third and less than 2 outs.

Why is Clevinger starting? Is Posey on DL?

    Stu

  127. NMR says:

Missing my point, cmat. NOTHING was better at the time. But that doesn’t mean you make a move just to make a move.

What if Ryan Zimmerman comes back and can’t play 3B. Adam Laroche is trade bait.

Ike Davis is now the Pirates 1B for at LEAST the rest of 2014, and you can bet 2015 as well.

  128. The Gunner says:

Luke had a couple good years & win 15 games one year. But he was a horrible hitter. If he was playing today, he’d be making $9 to $10 million a year!!!

  129. NMR says:

Maybe Alexei Ramirez when CWS eventually fall out of contention?

  130. Milo Hamilton says:

How dare they give out Al Bumbry’s number.

  131. tdb1977 says:

No hesitation there by Charlie on the 1-6-3 double play. His ground ball is working today very nicely. #GroundChuck

  132. NMR says:

Still not sure I like being stuck with him for four years, either.

  133. Jim S. says:

    60 pitches for Buddddd.

    33 for GC after 3.

  134. 36 DAYS UNTIL GREGORY POLANCO IS CONSIDERED “READY” TO BE BROUGHT UP TO BIG CLUB

    {because NOW is not nearly as important as 6 seasons from NOW}

  135. Maybe the guy looks a tad like The Bee. No. Forget that.

  136. Jim S. says:

If a fight breaks out today, all things being equal, I would prefer Jemile Weeks on my back to his brother, Ricky. You might not even notice Jemile back there.

  137. NMR says:

Always has been old for his level, hasn’t he? Didn’t get out of A-ball til 25.

  138. Jim S. says:

I thought it was only this year + 2 more?

  139. For sure. Or a Loogy in his latter years for only 5 or 6 mil.

  140. The Gunner says:

Chuck is doing well this far today, he could sure use a couple runs.

  141. Milo Hamilton says:

On the off day he worked on tipping waitresses. I understand he needs a little work in that area.

  142. cmat0829 says:

Posey plays for the Giants… if you mean Wieters he will catch in game 2, as catchers usually dont catch both ends of a DH and they chose Matt for game 2. Cue the “where’s Danny Moskos thread”…. though I did read on MLB TradeRumors.com yesterday that the Cubs have Dave Littlefield scouting the Mets for a potential trade…. is Theo really going to go with Davey has to recommend?

  143. Jim S. says:

I guess. But, he’s 25 now. Only for a few more weeks, though. I like the mis-fit toys, I guess. The irregulars.

  144. tdb1977 says:

Nice AB by Marte. Worked the count to get a walk. Bucs really making Norris work in the early going of this game. Be great to get into the O’s bullpen early with playing two today.

  145. NMR says:

That was the contract from Tampa Bay. Gotta beat it.

  146. cmat0829 says:

I’m with you, I was officially in the ‘give Lambo a chance club’… not sure I’m ready to give up on Ike though… let’s see what happens. I was ready to get rid of LaRoche (Adam not Andy) and Moss and I’d take either one at 1B right now.

  147. Reading says:

A 12-pitch walk, wasting about 7 pitches. Our long national search for a leadoff hitter is over! Wait … What? He just got removed from the leadoff position. Never mind.

  148. Milo Hamilton says:

    Dumb.

  149. The Gunner says:

CBS Sports is televising the Indianapolis-Pawtucket game tonight. So you can watch Polanco tonight if you have the right package from Comcast.

  150. cmat0829 says:

Inexcusable by Marte to try to take 3rd with 2 outs… that is a meaningless HIGH risk/ LOW reward move… he HAS to get his head in the game…. I know he is aggressive but that was just stupid.

  151. NMR says:

    Unreal. Little League.

  152. The Gunner says:

A student of the Sanguillen school of base running, no doubt

  153. Patrick(ri) says:

Just trying to take advantage of that awful player over at first.

  154. NMR says:

I’m a stat guy, Jim, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes I gotta go with what the scouts say.

  155. NMR says:

I wish Marte was half as good of a baserunner as Pedro.

  156. cmat0829 says:

Pearce does suck. He tries hard, but like my barista at Starbucks this morning…who was nice and polite and smiled, but then screwed up my order… I don’t dislike her, I just don’t want her to have anything to do with my preparing my latte.

Pearce was dumped by the Orioles but because he was slightly more desireable than the season ticket holder behind 1B putting on a glove, the O’s re-signed him while Davis mends.

  157. cmat0829 says:

John Elway and Drew Brees are going to tutor him on that. And Tiger Woods.

  158. I heard he tried to get in the front seat of a cab!

  159. NMR says:

All this talk of the PTBNL being “significant” is nothing but Alderson pimping himself up.

Huntington balked at trading Nick Kingham, and actual prospect, this winter. All Davis had done since then is get hurt (again) and demoted to a bench role.

Absolutely no reason not to let the Mets figure out if he can find his stroke and then trade for him if he does. Ah, nevermind, there’s one reason alright…

  160. It’s only a rumor that Pedro is a good baserunner.

He doesn’t get on base enough for us to know that factually.

  161. JohninOshkosh says:

I hear Sir Charles is a good tipper. Will sometimes pay off service personnel mortgages-stuff like that.

  162. cmat0829 says:

Interesting quick trigger on covering the field by the Orioles … would that be strategic to try to shut down Morton (Norris pitch count was already elevated so they aren’t worried about that)? Per the radar, doesn’t look like this weather will stay around too long.

  163. Oshkosh b’Gosh,

Badgers vs. Blue Devils in Madison for ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
I’m already getting psyched for it!!!

  164. JohninOshkosh says:

    Rain, rain go away….

  165. FlBucco says:

And we STILL have no LH hitting 1st basemen – can’t wait to see who the Met get IN ADDITION to what we over paid already for this POS!

  166. NMR says:

Since when did any of us care about facts?

  167. Milo Hamilton says:

The umpires make the call, not the Orioles.

  168. FlBucco says:

NO that is why they should have taken the incremental revenue from the great season – and the money they save by not QO Burnett and gone all in on Abreu.

Loney is not a lot better than Gaby or Davis – Abreu is a 10 year star – and solidifies the Bucs in Latin America!

Huntington missed a HUGE opportunity – a deal with Abreu provides cover for not QOing AJ [could not afford to do both!] and would have focused the ST battle on Lambo/Snider/Tabata trying to get the RF job.

  169. FlBucco says:

Once we are 20 games out the Pirates will announce they want Polanco to learn to switch hit so he will probably not be brought up until late June of 2015

  170. cmat0829 says:

boo. I prefer my Buck Showalter conspiracy theory…. I’m just hopeful this doesn’t shut Cholly down… we had the slight advantage of starting pitcher efficiency….

  171. FlBucco says:

As I recall the umps – league have control on last day of series – they WILL get one game in today…

Might have been a bit trigger happy – but they are going to make sure they don’t screw up the chance to get at least one done….

  172. cmat0829 says:

    yes please.

  173. cmat0829 says:

from what i can see, rain is moving out of area, so i think they get 2 in …. no doubt about it….i was only questioning why stop for the short delay when it was obvious the showers were gonna blow thru quickly… we played in Cincy in much much worse conditions…..with little hope of it blowing thru that night.

  174. Stuart says:

Thanx CMAT, I did mean Wieters; oldtimers disease! He probably wasn’t “signable” for the Bucs. ROFL

    Stu

  175. Stuart says:

    Resumption!

Morton comes out for the 5th.

    Stuart

  176. Patrick(ri) says:

    Just an awful player.

  177. Milo Hamilton says:

You say that like it’s a good thing.

  178. cmat0829 says:

this could get ugly…the delay seems to have affected Cholly… who has been less-than-sharp this inning… and again the defense letting the Pirates down…Pedro had no reason to rush that throw.

  179. Patrick(ri) says:

Looks like the rain delay really hurt Morton. Too bad.

  180. theplanisworking says:

Just in honor of your avi …………..

  181. cmat0829 says:

Flaherty does what NO Pirate ever does… choke up on the bat and just slap the single opposite way…. I’d give almost anything to see a Pirate do that. The Cardinals do…. but the Pirates keep angling for grand slams….

  182. Patrick(ri) says:

    +++

  183. Chuck H says:

Now you see the beauty of being able to hit with RISP. Baltimore does it, the Pirates do not. GO, Steelers!!!

  184. Milo Hamilton says:

Yeah, these 15 minute rain delays are killers. Any other excuses while we’re at it ?

  185. cmat0829 says:

Nelson Cruz doing his best Marte impression in that atbat.

  186. cmat0829 says:

    According to Wehner, wet baseballs.

  187. tdb1977 says:

I have nothing Milo. No rain delay excuses here. He just doesn’t have the command this inning that he had the first 4 innings.

  188. Milo Hamilton says:

Pitchers on good teams regularly sit on the bench for 15 minutes while their team is batting.

  189. Baywatch says:

    Pretty predictable MO from Chahlie.

  190. cmat0829 says:

Cholly minimized the damage…. Pearce (sucks) and Flaherty’s choke-up slap hit the damage… Cruz and Jones, taking the Pirate path, fail to do more damage…..

  191. Patrick(ri) says:

Actually, Morton did pretty well to escape (with a little help from Buck) only down two.

  192. The Gunner says:

    Milo…….

You said something about Charlie the last time he pitched. Does that still apply?

  193. Parrothead says:

Typical Morton start. Pitches great for 3 or 4 innings, the goes into an inning and elevates a couple pitches to give up hits, walks or hits a couple hitters , throw in an error and you have a 3 or 4 run inning. Instead of winning a close game he ends up losing a close game. Very frustrating pitcher.

  194. Reading says:

Of course, it’s a foregone conclusion that Pearce hits for the cycle with 8 RBIs, and JR will take over at some point today (ex-Pirate factor in full effect).

  195. cmat0829 says:

Calling it now… Neil HR here and tie ballgame…..

  196. Milo Hamilton says:

    Stinks.

  197. cmat0829 says:

Norris needs to STFU. If he doesn’t want to hit a player, throw it over the plate.

  198. The Gunner says:

Ha ha, Milo. Just checking! Let’s see if the Bucs can take advantage of the current opportunity.

  199. cmat0829 says:

Small sample size alert…. but Marte’s been battling MUCH MUCH better in his atbats today…..

  200. cmat0829 says:

Too bad, hard hit balls all day by the Bucs…… Nelson Cruz in the Matt Holliday school of left fielding…

  201. Patrick(ri) says:

Sorry, didn’t see it till now. Hilarious!

  202. Patrick(ri) says:

How long can you play a starter batting .170? Mercer is truly a weak player.

  203. Patrick(ri) says:

Wet ball, no doubt. Eh John?

  204. Milo Hamilton says:

    Same stuff, all year.

  205. Stuart says:

Mercer started the day at .167, so he’s looking up at .170.

    When is the draft?

I wonder if Steven Drew would sign with the Bucs.

Of course we expect him (Jody) to “regress to the mean”. I’d trade him even up for Mario Mendoza.

    Just sayin.

    Stuart

  206. Patrick(ri) says:

Games are stultifying in their similarity.

  207. cmat0829 says:

That hast to be it for Cholly, doesn’t it? Sinker ball pitcher, put 5 pitches at top of zone, very lucky Hardy didn’t yank one out for a 5-1 game.

  208. tdb1977 says:

The only spot for Gomez is a seat on a bus heading towards Indy.

  209. Stuart says:

I wonder if Johnny O’Brien (or Eddie) would be too old to play short?

    Stuart

  210. The Gunner says:

    That effin Pearce!!!!!

  211. Stuart says:

4-1. Wonder how Mazzero is doing at Indy.

    Stuart

  212. Patrick(ri) says:

    Ho, ho, ho!

  213. cmat0829 says:

4th run courtesy of Neil Walker.

  214. Stuart says:

He is short of stature, but hardly elfin.

    Stuart

  215. Milo Hamilton says:

Oh well, it’s nice to see the three day break didn’t hurt their momentum.

  216. The Gunner says:

Eddie’s unavailable, he just croaked a couple months ago. But I think Gair Allie (not Gene Alley) & Dick Schofield, Sr. are.

  217. Florida Steeler says:

    5 inning Charley strikes again.

  218. Parrothead says:

Our pitching stinks , our hitting stinks, and now looks like you’re feeling stinks. It’s starting to look like a long year.

  219. Stuart says:

Looks like they are mailing it in early.

    Stuart

  220. The Gunner says:

Looks like 2008 or 2009 again

  221. Milo Hamilton says:

Seriously. They look like it’s September & they can’t wait for long season to be over. No enthusiasm, not concentrating, no focus, multiple mental errors every game. Just awful baseball. All that pressure of living up to the expectations of finishing 2nd once must be too much to bare.

  222. Patrick(ri) says:

Buck is acting like Tony LaRussa.

  223. Patrick(ri) says:

I think his bat boy could get Ike out.

  224. theplanisworking says:

I posted last week about a perceived lack of clubhouse leadership this year. It shows.

  225. The Gunner says:

The clubhouse leadership has relocated to Philadelphia.

  226. Milo Hamilton says:

Six of the nine spots in the lineup hitting .234 or less. Three hitting less than .187. And no pitcher tonight.

  227. cmat0829 says:

oh lord, please, let’s not make it worse by blaming this on AJB not being here. thats as weak as their effort this season.

  228. cmat0829 says:

Cholly’s command escaped him… the fielding was awful…but you can’t win games scoring ONE RUN against a pitcher who was putting up more meatballs than Quizno’s…….

  229. The Gunner says:

now you’re hiding behind a bush, cmat

  230. Patrick(ri) says:

From the beat-a-dead-horse category, have you noticed JM stats? 6 H.r, 22 RBI & .343 BA.

  231. The Gunner says:

hopefully we have seen the last of Gomez in Pittsburgh

  232. theplanisworking says:

One would expect our MVP to fill the void.
    Or Martin.
    Or Barmes.

Maybe Polanco when he comes up …….

  233. The Gunner says:

Oh man, Patrick, you got some big ones to mention JM. We can thank the BMTIB for that decision.

  234. Patrick(ri) says:

To be fair, there were lots of games like this last year, but the Pirates tended to keep me a little closer and the the team would show late spark – I agree that they just look dead these days.

  235. cmat0829 says:

lol, were there SERIOUSLY people who wanted Morneau re-signed? After his punchless effort last September?? wow.

  236. That’s why Polanco should stay in AAA.

He can learn more by watching the hitters in Indy than watching the Pittsburgh hitters.

  237. Milo Hamilton says:

Wonder how the Rockies did after Clint’s other winning season ?

  238. Patrick(ri) says:

To mix metaphors, I admit to Monday morn. QBing.

  239. Patrick(ri) says:

Don’t try to short-hand on an iPad! “Monday morning quarterbacking.”

  240. Did the Rockies have a .221 team bating average? Can’t win if you don’t hit.

Oh yeah, also can’t win if you can’t pitch.

  241. Milo Hamilton says:

    2008.

    74-88.

Nine games out on May 1st (11-17 in April).

    Oh my.

  242. Quite well. Much better than Gomez is in the bigs.

  243. Thundercrack says:

The Pirates played very well in Spring Training and won a lot of games. That why this slow start surprises me. They seemed to be ready for the start of the season and take care of business.

  244. Patrick(ri) says:

Didn’t they scout Marte? Throw him down and away, not rising.

  245. Amen to that. Time to put the excuse of working out the kinks to rest.

  246. The Gunner says:

    sounds like a pattern, Milo

  247. Patrick(ri) says:

    Some folks in Denver.

  248. Patrick(ri) says:

    A little 2013 magic?

  249. Milo Hamilton says:

So Clint Hurdle’s teams combined April record after a winning season is 21-33.

  250. Milo Hamilton says:

And a combined 18 games out of 1st place. Wish we had a bigger sample size but …

  251. Thundercrack says:

We’re just out of April and we are going to start to blame Clint?

Maybe their collapse is going to happen in the first half of the season

  252. I’m sure glad Travis Snider and his .224 average aren’t the problem. He does have 3 HR from that dripping power.

  253. Milo Hamilton says:

No better time than May 1st to look at April stats. I’m a sucker for trends. Not blaming anyone, just killing time until hockey starts. :)

  254. Has Hurdle quit sending out his tweets or e-mails or whatever?

  255. Florida Steeler says:

I know that we are all being a little critical; and it is still early. But, there are some serious troubling signs. Jordy Mercer is awful and Clint is not the answer. Is Drew available?? First base is still a dead hole but no help available.
And, pitching has been below the standard deviation line.
    All spells trouble.

  256. The Gunner says:

Stick a fork in the Bucs as far as game 1 is concerned.

  257. Patrick(ri) says:

Give Walker a pass. Has to be tough to concentrate. No idea what is wrong with most of the other guys.

How about Cole as DH in game 2?

  258. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s 0 for his last 21 for Ike. I think his last hit was that grand slam. Not kidding.

  259. There are some guys hitting the ball in Indy. And before anyone tells me about the “world of difference” between AAA and ML, I’m well aware of it.

  260. Thundercrack says:

I like Buck Showalter. But he is managing this game like his hair is on fire.

  261. The Gunner says:

DEPLORABLE, DEPLORABLE AND MORE DEPLORABLE!!!!!!! GREAT EFFORT, BUM GABY

  262. Patrick(ri) says:

Horrible 3-1 swing with a 4 run deficit,

  263. Bizrow says:

When is it legal for me to set my stubble hair on fire? :-)

  264. theplanisworking says:

Where is the ‘Leadership Council’ when you need them?

  265. The Gunner says:

    Lucky

What do you make of all this ineptitude?

  266. cmat0829 says:

well that was a major bummer of a game 1….. trying to stay positive… I can POSITIVELY say this 4-14 stretch has SUCKED….

did you see the video of Clint answering questions just now… who was the absolute IDIOT who asked the question (or I guess made the statement)…”So, you have lost 14 of your last 18 games..how do you… I mean do you just go out and happy to lose the next game or ?”

I think Clint showed a lot of restraint answering that blithering slobber of a ‘question’.

Whoever that idiot was is performing about as good as the Pirates at this point, I’m hoping that was the Baltimore writers and not 24/7.

  267. theplanisworking says:

    To quote Milo …….

    stinks.

  268. theplanisworking says:

Someone actually asked if he was happy to lose the next game?
    Is Madden in Baltimore?

  269. Not sure, Gunner. But the excuses are running out.

  270. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    This team STINKS!!

  271. theplanisworking says:

    THERE YOU ARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Welcome back. :)

  272. Brandie says:

    Holy CRAP!!! Hello Playoffs!!!

  273. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Drew will be available after the draft.

Right now he’s not worth a 1st round pick.

Not sure if he’d be much help for his asking price.

  274. JohninOshkosh says:

    Holy balls! It’s him!

  275. The Gunner says:

Maybe game 2 will be different

  276. theplanisworking says:

Looks like he just did a drive-by.

    Or, Playoffs-by.

  277. Cal Hammer says:

I think Game #1 is the best U R going to get 3 singles he’s now hitting .185.2 career in the cleanup spot!!!!

  278. cmat0829 says:

Yep, was pretty much as I typed it…give or take a word or two.. Clint had to say “happy to lose a game? No…I’m trying to answer your question but I don’t hear one in there”.

I THINK the bumbling idiot who somehow scores credentials meant to ask ‘What is your approach for game 2, having dropped game 1′…and even as I try to help this idiot out, that question in and of itself is lame too.

  279. cmat0829 says:

Why, ROOT, why do we have to sit through 18 innings of Tim Neverett? In a DH, wouldn’t it make sense to swap announcing crews just so we can hear something different??

  280. Cal Hammer says:

Yea he sure clicked that Ike Davis!! Hurdle to give him a chance in GM2 to raise his avg from .000 The bucs have not put together more then 2 hits in an inn. for 65 inn. now!!!

  281. cmat0829 says:

LETS GO BUCS ok, i’m calling it, 11-2 Pirates in game 2. They score a bunch of meaningless runs to pump up their offensive (and they are most certainly that) stats and then resume scoring 2 runs or less tomorrow night vs. the Jays.

HRs from Cutch, Walker and Barmes. And yes, I’ve had a few brews between games … :)

  282. theplanisworking says:

There is a joke in there somewhere, but I just can’t get past that ‘question’.

  283. cmat0829 says:

THERE!!!! A SLAP hit for the Pirates….

  284. How could anyone say they stink with Lunchie leading off, now down to .221 after a K to open the game?

    ;)

  285. cmat0829 says:

Is this really Chris Tillman or did Bud Norris just change jerseys?

  286. Thundercrack says:

Absolutely horrible throw by the left fielder. A decent throw gets Ike

  287. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

The Pirates are going to get to Tillman.

    Not impressive at all.

  288. cmat0829 says:

PEDRO TRYING TO PULL EVERYTHING….EVERYTHING….. why?

  289. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    With ease.

  290. cmat0829 says:

he’s about as meaty as norris was…. things just have to bust open at some point don’t they??

  291. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    That’s what Pedro does.

  292. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Yea. I missed game one.

Pedro is just missing some of those FB right meow

  293. cmat0829 says:

wasnt tillman a hyped pitching prospect for them… I’m not seeing ANYTHING to like about him…no command, no stuff… no presence…. yuck.

  294. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Is this the series Pedro gets hot?

  295. theplanisworking says:

Gonna have to say an extra prayer for that one, Reverend.

  296. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I hope not. 90-92 with no command won’t get you very far

  297. cmat0829 says:

    so its all YOUR fault.

  298. cmat0829 says:

    4-6 so far.

  299. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Gaby needs to swing for the fences right here, at least until 2 strikes.

  300. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

He’ll push 40 hrs this year

  301. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Tillman isn’t going to make it passed 5 tonight.

Good ABs by all tonight, even Snider.

  302. Thundercrack says:

Why can’t Gabby catch up to 90-92?

  303. The Gunner says:

    Gaby sure is battling

  304. cmat0829 says:

according to wikipedia, he is the O’s ace…. and his out pitches are the changeup and curve. problem is the Pirates dont seem to be fooled by the change or the curve tonight… and they are about to crush his BP fastball any time now.

  305. cmat0829 says:

my guess is the scouting report says tillman goes to change or curve to get outs…and they are looking for that and not able to catch up to fb.

  306. The Gunner says:

But, as usual, Gaby strands more base runners.

  307. cmat0829 says:

Buck used 27 pitchers in game 1…so he would probably like Tillman to be a bit more efficient.

  308. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Waiting last minute for off speed

  309. A 13-pitch popout. At least he’s made him work.

  310. cmat0829 says:

NEIL NEEDS TO SIT FASTBALL AND BLAST IT OUT

  311. cmat0829 says:

ouch, pitch #4 was the HR pitch. but full count again…

  312. cmat0829 says:

is it time for a Marte partay???

  313. Safe to say Tillman probably won’t finish this game. A couple shots here and he might not finish the inning.

Hope that’s not our run for the game.

  314. cmat0829 says:

is this tillman or KIP WELLS?

  315. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Looks like a little league game

  316. tdb1977 says:

    Here is the 3rd out.

  317. Thundercrack says:

    Our offense is on fire!

When is the last time we scored more than 1 run in an inning?

  318. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Possibly

  319. The Gunner says:

Gaby has only left 7 runners in scoring position tonight.

  320. cmat0829 says:

yep classic take a meaty fastball right down the middle. no choke up, no protect, no slap something in play.. just watch, turn, glare back at scoreboard, and repeat.

  321. The last time someone was that wild.

Barmes to the rescue for Buck’s bullpen.

  322. tdb1977 says:

2 runs on 2 hits and Tillman uses about 50 bullets to get out of the first inning. Some great AB’s, but really should have gotten a few more runs. But hey, we should take the 2 runs and be happy about it.

  323. theplanisworking says:

As Gene Hackman said in Hoosiers….
    ‘Make it a good one’.

    :D

  324. cmat0829 says:

i know clint is giving him a chance to hit in AL park, but I’d have preferred Jay Hey at 3B and Pedro as DH in game 2.

  325. Locke came out after 2+ innings and only 46 pitches tonight. Wonder if he hurt something.

  326. Milo Hamilton says:

Too bad they didn’t make a couple errors.

  327. The Gunner says:

It’s by the grace of God we got 2 runs. I am ecstatic!

  328. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

For the record, I wanted Machado in the draft

  329. The Gunner says:

Uh oh, doesn’t sound good. The game is being televised on the CBS cable channel.

  330. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Still say Jordy doesn’t make that play

  331. Milo Hamilton says:

Probably on a strict pitch count. They’ll need him here next week to start a game.

  332. Thundercrack says:

I was watching he didn’t look hurt. I did wonder why he was lofted so early…in the middle of an inning.

  333. tdb1977 says:

Maybe he got a call to come back to Pittsburgh?

  334. Milo Hamilton says:

Probably Monday on three days rest.

  335. Thundercrack says:

    Polanco with a triple.

  336. JohninOshkosh says:

Dejan is feisty tonight on Twitter.

  337. tdb1977 says:

    Lambo followed with a HR

  338. The Gunner says:

    Lambo went deep

  339. theplanisworking says:

    FREE LAMBANCO !! ;)

  340. theplanisworking says:

    Isn’t he always?

  341. Lambo another HR.

  342. Bizrow says:

    Crap, am recharging the phone

  343. tdb1977 says:

Guess the Bucs have reached their run quota for this game. Godspeed Brandon and hopefully, that’s enough runs to hold onto this lead. At least you have 2 runs this time to play with!

  344. Thundercrack says:

Just realize that I can watch the game online at MLB.TV. Bonus…and I can change the telecast and watch the Baltimore telecast.

  345. The Gunner says:

2 more Bucco runners LOB, not good

  346. Thundercrack says:

6Ks for this guy – who almost had his arm fall off in the first inning.

  347. Arriba Wilver says:

    PLAYOFFS !!!!!!!!!!!

I hope everything is good with you, my friend,

  348. Thundercrack says:

Here we go….. letting the Orioles back into this game.

Tillman has thrown some good pitches and rebounded nicely, but we’ve seen this act by Pirates hitters too many times.

  349. Arriba Wilver says:

    ++++

  350. JohninOshkosh says:

Trying to recall, has Toronto ever played at PNC ?

  351. Arriba Wilver says:

    Right “meow? ”

You must have just watched Super Troopers.

    :-D

  352. Milo Hamilton says:

Really glad McCutchen does the big things right.

  353. Hey, finally put Game 2 thread up. I thought I had it up originally. Pushed wrong button. Sorry.

  354. Just having “fun.”

  355. I was thinking JVB, actually. And I’m serious.

  356. That magical 90-mph fastball right down the pipe that’s missing bats has been key.

  357. Milo Hamilton says:

Is that where all the runs are ?

  358. tdb1977 says:

I’m trying to find anything on the web if they have played here or not. Not coming up with any luck though

  359. Thundercrack says:

    We can never tell.

  360. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m not sure, but didn’t the guy who Andy Laroche replaced play at PNC once with Toronto?
