Comments

  1. TK says:

The Pirates are 10-18, not 10-16

  2. theplanisworking says:

    LET’S GO BUCS !!!

    DFA that bum Snider !!

  3. JohninOshkosh says:

Battle of the young overrated General Managers.

  4. JohninOshkosh says:

    Toronto Blue Jays Lineup

    SS: Jose Reyes
    LF: Melky Cabrera
    RF: Jose Bautista
    1B: Edwin Encarnacion
    3B: Juan Francisco
    2B: Brett Lawrie
    CF: Colby Rasmus
    C: Josh Thole
    SP: Brandon Morrow

Buccos lineup not posted yet on MLB site.

  5. Chuck H says:

It doesn’t matter what lineup the Pirates use–they don’t have the fire power to beat anyone, but, as long as the customers keep flocking in, the management is happy.

  6. Is he out of options?

  7. Tom P. says:

    Pirates lineup now up:

    RF: Jose Tabata
    2B: Neil Walker
    CF: Andrew McCutchen
    3B: Pedro Alvarez
    1B: Gaby Sanchez
    LF: Starling Marte
    C: Tony Sanchez
    SS: Jordy Mercer
    SP: Gerrit Cole

  8. Dom says:

Would Brandon Morrow as the opposing pitcher gives us hope?

  9. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks, Tom.

  10. Milo Hamilton says:

Brendan Morrow on left wing certainly didn’t.

He walked 8 guys in 2.1 innings last time out & is sporting a 6.04 ERA.

  11. It should. His ERA is over 6. But, that means we’ll squeeze out a couple and bring it down for him. (Hopefully not).

Gaby in against a righty. Hats off to Hurdle for going with a hot bat and not a match-up.

Thanks DK for putting up this thread even though you’re on location at a SC playoff hockey game.

    We appreciate it!

  12. Dom says:

Yeah, shouldnt he give us hope for tonight?q

  13. TK says:

Mercer bats .336 when hitting 2nd.
He bats .212 when batting 8th.

For an organization that loves numbers, has no one in the Pirates organization noticed this?

Alvarez hits below the Mendoza line batting 4th but his .274 batting fifth and .250 (with 35 HRs) batting 6th.

Walker hits best when batting 6th.

    G. Sanchez his over .300 when batting 4th.

Couldn’t they create a lineup where everyone bats in the order where they hit best (or second best) or is that asking too darn much?

  14. Now, TK, didn’t you know BA’s don’t mean anything?

    ;)

  15. Funny how the Cubs got 6 runs and 10 hits off the “unhittable” Wainright today. Cubs’ BA’s are much better than ours, too, and not just Bonifacio’s. Must be the hitter’s park that Wrigley is, right?

Thank God, our pitching is better. Oh wait……

    ;)

  16. TK says:

    Yeah, players reaching base.
Get enough players on base, they might score runs.
    What a novel idea.

  17. JohninOshkosh says:

You do know that watching the games on TV, or listening on radio, financially helps the Buccos as well ?

  18. Bizrow says:

Morrow is right handed, correct? No platooning tonight.

Groat will bring home a win ;-)

  19. Brandie says:

    Too logical.

  20. theplanisworking says:

    I honestly don’t know.

I know whenever he is in Pittsburgh, the Pirates are normally out of options ………………….

  21. theplanisworking says:

No, the Pirates will strand them. :(

  22. theplanisworking says:

I think this is a bit of a red herring, Osh.
The Pirates receive the Root/KDKA money regardless of who does/doesn’t watch or listen to the games.

It might affect future TV/radio contracts, but you or I watching tonight has no bearing on what the Pirates currently get.

Actual attendance, mainly walk-up sales is a big factor on $$$

  23. toochca says:

He walked 8 but still had a no-hitter when he left. Problem for the Pirates isn’t getting people on bases, it’s scoring them!!

  24. Arriba Wilver says:

    Good stuff, TK. E-mail Neil.

  25. Chuck H says:

Currently tied with the Cubbies for last place. GO, STEELERS!!!

  26. Thundercrack says:

Regarding radio, I think the Pirates have control over some of the commercial inventory. So the higher the ratings the more they can charge. (maybe not this year but they can use those numbers to sell inventory next year)

And if DK wasn’t busy at the Pens game he might come over here and educate us about walk-up sales again.

  27. Thundercrack says:

I am going to the game tonight.

They are 3-0 so far when I have attended. 2 blowouts and walk off win.

I’m just what the doctor ordered. :-)

  28. Milo Hamilton says:

The Pirates sell 100% of their radio advertising.

  29. toochca says:

Here’s to keeping your record unblemished!!

  30. JohninOshkosh says:

Contracts are based on ratings which dictate advertising charges. Watching the games has a direct bearing on the negotiations involving the contracts. Tampa Bay, for example, gets lousy crowds but has strong local television ratings. An important source of revenue for the clubs.

In reality, modern sports are driven by television revenues. Thus, the Rangers playing 5 games in 7 days, or whatever it is. Media $$$$.

Biggest single transaction in business will be Comcast taking over Time Warner. Billions.

Never have bought that argument that people won’t go to games in protest. Yet, watch the games and wear the caps. It’s all benefiting the club. My subscription to Time Warner and the MLB package supports Nutting. Maybe not dollars in the pocket tonight but sure as hell dollars when the contracts are signed.

  31. 21sthebest says:

I’m 3-1 and will be there as well.

    Can you bring your grill?

  32. Thundercrack says:

Yeah….and I’m hoping for a win tonight too.

  33. JohninOshkosh says:

Wish I could go. Would love to see Toronto play. Love the anthem.

  34. JohninOshkosh says:

What will get higher ratings in Toronto ?

The Jays ? The Raptors Game 6 ? Or, most likely, the Pens/Rangers game ?

  35. theplanisworking says:

Oh, I agree with your overall point, Osh.

It’s just that the current TV/radio deals are in place.

The only time this becomes an issue is when they are re-upped…….. or they go to a different station.

I think the Root deal has what, 7 more years or something?
If I watch tonight, that won’t amount to a hill of beans 7 years from now.

Imagine if Burkle/Nutting would partner for an all-sports channel here like YES in NY?

  36. The Gunner says:

Yes, “Bad Legs” Snider is out of options. P.S. – HE STINKS!!

  37. Brandie says:

Scathing Revvie, just a scathing indictment.

  38. JohninOshkosh says:

Yes. But, its just disingenuous to say people who actually go to the game are benefiting the owner whereas the people watching every game on their paid television package are not.

  39. theplanisworking says:

I guess I am just a disingenuous type of guy. ;)

  40. theplanisworking says:

Brandie, Jandy was asking about you today.
    Good to see you tonight.

  41. JohninOshkosh says:

Btw, Plan, I’ve written far more on this than I intended. :)

  42. Bizrow says:

So, you are the luck and not the hat???

  43. Arriba Wilver says:

Not sure what that means, Milo? Can you expand?

  44. theplanisworking says:

    Yeah, prolly me too :)

  45. Bizrow says:

    Videos of their mayor ;-)

  46. Arriba Wilver says:

    Stay dry.

  47. Arriba Wilver says:

    Oops, Neal.

  48. Milo Hamilton says:

Every radio station has a sales department. They are responsible for selling the ads for their programming. The salesmen get commission of course. The Pirates have their own sales department that does all the selling for their games. The Pirates control all that revenue, not the radio station. Much like the team hires the announcers, not the radio station. And what they charge for their spots is determined by ratings. The Pirates have had this arrangement going all the way back to when they were on 1020. It’s not a ton of money in the grand scheme of things, but it is advantageous to the team.

  49. JohninOshkosh says:

    Herb Tarlek.

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

Exactly John. I always called my boss The Big Guy.

  51. Brandie says:

So very busy at work … getting lots of responsibility.

  52. Lad 9 says:

    LMAO!

  53. theplanisworking says:

    You conquer the world yet?

  54. Brandie says:

    Working on it Plan Quinn.

  55. Scathing is right, Brandelicious. And they did it in 5 innings.

  56. Cole having trouble in the first yet again. Hope it doesn’t cost him the game like last Sunday against the unhittable one.

  57. Arriba Wilver says:

Thanks, Milo. Not sure what it all means, but I understand your posts.

  58. theplanisworking says:

Pirates and Pens off to horrible starts.

    TGIF !!!

  59. JohninOshkosh says:

28 pitches in first for Cole. Sort of fell apart after the first two retired rather easily.

  60. Brandie says:

Miss posting as much as I used to. Miss Jandy Carlyle. Love my job though. Miss everybody here.

  61. Brandie says:

    Allergic to winning all right.

  62. JohninOshkosh says:

Lawrie making first career major league start at second.

  63. Thundercrack says:

More than a few Blue Jays fans. The accent is annoying It isn’t as annoying as the Boston accent. THAT is one I can’t take that for 9 innings

  64. Patrick(ri) says:

3rd base ump looks like the Toronto mayor. Not sure MLB is the best place to do a drug rehab.

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

Make them say “out” “sorry” and “about”

  66. Patrick(ri) says:

No prediction, but i think Cole is currently one of our best hitters.

Btw, open the bubbly, clint eschewed the bunt!

  67. Brandie says:

He makes former DC Mayor Marrion Berry look credible.

  68. Thundercrack says:

The ROOT crowd cameraman is near me. I want to kick him in the shins

  69. Brandie says:

    Better behave yourself.

  70. cmat0829 says:

Mercer 2-2… in grounding into inning-killing double plays, that is. Ugh.

  71. Chuck H says:

Today, so far, he has hit into 2 DPs. Put the better fielding ss as the everyday ss.

  72. Patrick(ri) says:

Cole is a baseball player, not just a prima donna pitcher.

  73. Brandie says:

    Behave yourself.

  74. Jandy says:

Hehe flick a booger at him ;)

  75. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Just a brilliant AB by Jose Tabata with two on and two out.
    Or was that Jose Valverde?!?!?!?!?!
    Pitiful…..

  76. What kind of reception did Bautista get, TC?

  77. Patrick(ri) says:

I like Tabby, but I agree about that AB. Especially after Cole worked him to death. Too quick, too feeble.

  78. theplanisworking says:

    Jose Lind. ;)

  79. cmat0829 says:

The other night, Tony Sanchez looked good behind the plate… Morton pitching… blocked a ton of balls with the right form…. still behind the plate, in control. Tonight he is moving, shifting, all over the place. Seems fooled a lot on the pitch… not good form…. Is it Cole? It’s just tough to watch!

  80. Thundercrack says:

Not bad. Lots of Toronto fans here doing the “Jose” chant.

  81. cmat0829 says:

LETS SCORE SOME FRIGGING RUNS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  82. Andrew says:

I’ve been watching the Penguins, I see the Pirates have continue in the new found ability to strand runners, and starting pitching still giving up homeruns.

  83. Daquido_Bazzini says:

That AB made Chico Lind look like a .300 hitter!

  84. At least he’s 2-2.

  85. 3 runs on 11 hits and a walk so far. We need 22 hits to score 6 runs I guess.

  86. Brandie says:

Guess we’re not “Embracing The Suck” hard enough.

  87. Lad 9 says:

BRANDIEEEEEEEEEEE! How are you this evening my friend?

  88. Thundercrack says:

Tying run on second with no outs.

    Stranded there.

  89. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

After reading some of the above comments, I thought it was #TBT to 2012.

    Negativity ruling the roost tonight.

  90. Brandie says:

    LAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNEEEEEE!!!!!

Still have no idea why I think of the Bird Man yell when I reply to you. Makes me smile. Continuing to work hard and earn my way. Hope all is right in your world.

  91. Lad 9 says:

Same on both threads Ryan. I am just enjoying two close contests in the Burgh. I figure it could be a lot worse. I could be in Philly with no hockey and a decrepit baseball team that could crash and burn for several years if they are not careful.

  92. Arriba Wilver says:

    Gold, Biz. ;-)

  93. Lad 9 says:

So glad for you! You deserve it. All is good. Recovering from my trip to and from Louisville this week. It took three days to go back and forth for an hour meeting…. Ah well

  94. Arriba Wilver says:

At least we’d get to see AJ.

    :-). :-). :-)

  95. Brandie says:

My above post about the suck was tongue in cheek. The same negativity will indeed turn to objectivity, dare I say glee, when the Buccos put together a decent winning streak.

  96. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

This place is just a broken record most days.

    -Bob Nutting is cheap.
-Neal Huntington is the worst GM
    -Travis Snider, well that’s legit
    -TV rights $$$$
    -Bring up Polanco
-Clint Hurdle should bat this guy here or that guy there

  97. theplanisworking says:

Nothing fixes that like a winning streak, Brandecita…..

  98. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    I totally get that….

  99. Patrick(ri) says:

You can add near zero productivity with the bases loaded to your list.

  100. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

And Cutch has a terrible AB with bases loaded.

  101. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    That’s legit gripe, IMO.

It’s a definite issue that needs to be addressed. Had same issues last year.

  102. Milo Hamilton says:

    Why so negative ?

  103. Patrick(ri) says:

Tough batting order for a rookie!

  104. Brandie says:

What the Buccos need is a healthy dose of Kenny Powers! :)

  105. Patrick(ri) says:

    ++

  106. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I am interested in seeing what Sadler can do here.

Very excited about the young arms the Buccos have. Not including Taillon in that group.

  107. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    They couldn’t handle it!!!

    Hell, most in here cant

  108. Brandie says:

Hurdle needs to learn to match lines!!!! ;)

  109. Nate83 says:

This team is really good…………………………………….at stranding runners.

49 base runners in the last 3 games and only 9 runs.

  110. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Unfortunately my complaint is becoming a broken record too.

But at least it’s actually relevant and pertaining to the game.

  111. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Can Marte be the Steelers deep threat this year?

  112. Patrick(ri) says:

    He did fine.
Francisco looked like was robbed on that pop fly.

  113. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I think the advantage always goes to a new pitcher.

Once hitters learn their pitches and tendencies, it evens out the playing field a little more.

  114. Nate83 says:

His bouncy eyeballs may prevent him from catching the ball.

  115. cmat0829 says:

The more I think about the Pirates and their current funk, it reminds me of my golf game. When it starts going bad, my thoughts turn negative… I press… squeeze the club tighter… everything that could go wrong, does. Every poor shot begets more bad thoughts which begets more bad shots.

It may take a lucky shot out of the bunker to wake this team up… hang in there guys…..

  116. Brandie says:

    That mullett is legendary.

  117. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Has to be better than Emmanuel Sanders though

  118. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    That’s not the only thing

  119. Andrew says:

They are just finding new and different ways to lose, I have only seen a couple at bats, but three double plays.

  120. cmat0829 says:

nice job by sadler… this game is there to be had…. CAN the buccos dig deep and pull this one out??? will need a long ball to do it….

  121. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Or 3

  122. cmat0829 says:

Did I just hear Mercer is O for his last TWENTY FIVE????? Mercy, Mercer….. he needs an extended break… I vote for Harrison to get the next few starts at SS……

  123. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Harrison???

    At SS?

    Wow

  124. cmat0829 says:

I am usually not negative but I can’t stomach many more Mercer at bats right now…. he has zero confidence… seems like he is just happy to make contact , like a relief pitcher in his first major league at bat….. Harrison has played SS a time or 2… but if I must, I’ll have Barmes..

  125. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Did you see Harrison’s AB?

I agree Jordy might need to grab some pine, but not for J-Hay. He shouldn’t start at any position.

  126. Patrick(ri) says:

Come on Blass, which part of your body do you want open your arms to?

  127. cmat0829 says:

Brewers 21 wins… 3 more than any other ML team… and a run differential of +16. A’s have a run differential of +59, record of 18-10. No doubt a great start by the Brewers but what goes up, must come down…..

  128. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

It’s getting late, perhaps 1 too many beers there for Blass

  129. cmat0829 says:

They need a spark… and JayHey plays with energy, just grasping at straws here… Step 1, bench Mercer asap. Step 2, put anyone else in there.

  130. JohninOshkosh says:

Baseball games just go on forever these days.

The hockey team in town has already played an entire game that went into OT. Both started within minutes of each other.

  131. Patrick(ri) says:

Perhaps if you gave infielders face masks and chest protectors, they could drop to their knees . . .

  132. cmat0829 says:

this game was particularly ugly in terms of pace. Mostly due to starting pitchers laboring with little command.

  133. The Gunner says:

The meat of the order is up / it’s do or die time

  134. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I see J-Hay mentioned as a spark all the time here, I just don’t see it.

I really think he’d hurt more defensively than any positive he may add offensively.

But yes, Jordy could use a break

  135. cmat0829 says:

there will be a HR this inning…who gets it?

  136. The Gunner says:

    Cutch or Pedro

  137. JohninOshkosh says:

    Don’t go to bed yet.

Sergio Santos in to close for the Jays.

  138. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Pedro

  139. Patrick(ri) says:

    Ike? A job saving necessity.

  140. The Gunner says:

    Definitely not Cutch

  141. JohninOshkosh says:

    Stinks.

  142. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

How to pitch Pedro: soft and away

  143. The Gunner says:

    Great call, my man!

  144. cmat0829 says:

    WE CALLED IT> thanks gents.

  145. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    And that wasn’t it..

    I called that $&”!

  146. Patrick(ri) says:

Nice call. Got some Lotto #s?

  147. Milo Hamilton says:

    Boom.

  148. Lad 9 says:

    PEDRO!!!!

  149. cmat0829 says:

how not to pitch to Pedro.. fast and middle-in.

  150. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Missed his spot big time.

  151. The Gunner says:

    Walk off for Marte???

  152. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Exactly.

  153. JohninOshkosh says:

    Wow.

My radio feed is way behind. Cutch is still batting. lol

  154. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Guess what happens?!

  155. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Well played sir!!

  156. Milo Hamilton says:

    And Boom.

  157. The Gunner says:

    Holy s–t!!!!!!

  158. Andrew says:

    It gets better.

  159. cmat0829 says:

MARTE PARTAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE STREAK STARTED TONIGHT MY FRIENDS>>>> KEEP THE FAITH!!!!!!!

  160. Nate83 says:

    Wow, nice call

  161. JohninOshkosh says:

+++++No one issued a SPOILER ALERT. ATTA BOY, PEDRO

  162. Lad 9 says:

Thank you Sergio Santos! The Blue Jays now ex closer. Good call Johnny Osh. Raise it!

  163. Patrick(ri) says:

    Awesome.

  164. The Gunner says:

    I got lucky, Ryan

  165. cmat0829 says:

ITS BEEN A WHILE>>>>> LETS RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER MY FRIENDS… it is well earned. and well appreciated.

  166. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hahahahaha.

    I’ll take getting spoiled.

    Yippeee!

  167. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    +++

  168. Milo Hamilton says:

    Gaby translates for lefthanded announcers.

  169. cmat0829 says:

Blue Jays GM may need some lessons on how to build a bullpen… perhaps save some of those $s he spent on the slowpitch softball offense and throw a few bucks into a bullpen. And Blass was right… Gibbons should have just let Cecil pitch a 3inning save.

  170. The Gunner says:

I wonder if Gaby gets paid extra to be a translator

  171. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Gaby has no idea what Marte is saying

  172. cmat0829 says:

Gaby may be better served asking better questions than Robbie does… a good journalist Robbie is not

  173. Thundercrack says:

We’ve gone a week’s worth of games without getting 17 hits

  174. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    We’ll take it my friend…

  175. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    What offensive issues??

1 pitch at a time guys.

Too bad Sadler didn’t get the win though.

  176. The Gunner says:

Seriously, let’s hope this sparks a hot streak for our Buccos.

  177. Milo Hamilton says:

You stay unbeaten. I’ll take care of Sunday, I haven’t lost yet either.

  178. theplanisworking says:

    Dammit!
    I missed the 9th!

    But, happy for the W!
Very happy for Ike, and Pedro!

  179. Baywatch says:

We feel like winners again! What a crazy game, this game of baseball!

  180. Baywatch says:

LOL, Ryan! And Marte had no idea what Robby was saying! :-)

  181. Baywatch says:

    +++

  182. theplanisworking says:

    And Marte!
Cannot forget about the walkoff winner!

Now, can some of that rub off on Snider for a change?

  183. Baywatch says:

    Up here, Gun!

  184. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Wow!…What a late outburst by the Bucs.
    Much needed win!

  185. theplanisworking says:

    HEY BAY!

    UP HERE !!!!!!

  186. theplanisworking says:

Every win is now ‘much needed’.
And, they need a heck of a lot more.

  187. Bizrow says:

You need a win, send Groat and TC to the game.

    Sweet win

  188. Karen22 says:

Pens pain assuaged a bit…what a difference a dinger or two make!!

    NICE win, Buccos! :)

  189. theplanisworking says:

  196. Baywatch says:

  197. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++

  198. Arriba Wilver says:
