  1. Thundercrack says:

    Hello friends,
I am going to tomorrow’s game – 12:35. Does anyone have suggestions on where to park?

I am thinking about parking near First Ave in town and taking the T over. Or maybe taking the chance of the Warhol Garage….or the garage by the Greyhound station.

  3. Arriba Wilver says:

First Avenue Garage will be full. I don’t know if this will work, but you might want to try Station Square. You’ll have to pay for the T. There’s always the Casino, but check with Biz on that. It might be $25 or $40. For opening day I parked down the river off of River Road. I wouldn’t count on the Warhol. The last day game I saw the Greyhound garages both full by 11:00. But it was also Take Your Kid to Work Day, and downtown was a mess.

If all this fails, e-mail 24/7.

  4. TK says:

If you park at Station Square, you can walk across the Smithfield Street Bridge and take the bikeway to Grant Street and the Jail Trail to First Avenue Garage which has a “T” station attached to it. It’s free from there.

Or you could park at the Second Ave lot and take the trail to the “T” station at the First Avenue Garage.

  5. 21sthebest says:

So are we tied at 4-1? I’m going tonight and planning on taking a 1/2 game lead.

  6. 21sthebest says:

PPG garage will be $20. You’ll definitely get a spot, it’s not a bad walk, and an easy exit no matter which direction you’re headed afterwards.

  7. Reading says:

They always talk on the radio about taking the Gateway Clipper to the game, but I’m not sure where you depart from.

  8. theplanisworking says:

    ++++++++++++++++++++

  9. Karen22 says:

“A good friend of mine used to say, ‘This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball.’”

I’ve been known to say this myself. What’s so hard, Pirates?? ;)

  10. Baywatch says:

I figure it’s gut check time, after last night. Either we come up with just enough off the bulldog Hudson, or they’ll kill us if Charlie is still in powder puff mode.

  11. Park in Greentree and thumb down the Parkway.

  12. The Gunner says:

Glad to see Jay Hey is starting in RF again. Locke optioned back to Indy; any time your starting pitcher gives up 6 runs like he did last night, it is a major issue.

  13. Lad 9 says:

I thought Lambo was coming up today since they don’t need a fifth starter until the 18th, but I think having to use the bullpen so much last night killed that. Welcome back Phil Irwin.

  14. The Gunner says:

    Lucky

Let’s hope Morton doesn’t pitch like Locke did last night. The positive takeaway was Locke had 2 or 3 smooth innings where he threw very few pitches and was quite effective, The negative takeaway was the 6 runs he gave up. Call me crazy but, I am just not very impressed with Locke.

  15. Thundercrack says:

We’ve only seen walk-off wins and blow out wins.
Last night it started out as a chance for a blow-out….and then we hoped for the walk-off.

I hope you take the lead tonight 21.

  16. JuniataKid says:

Well, if you have a bike, I recommend parking along the trail up by Heinz and riding down. Or even Millvale park. Easy, easy ride. Otherwise, I was always partial to the open lot on the city side of the Clemente Bridge.

  17. The Gunner says:

    Bay

Last night Locke pretty much pitched like Morton does. 3 or so outstanding innings and then one or two crappy innings. The end result is usually a Bucco loss.

Morton better not be in “powder puff” mode tonight.

  18. Thundercrack says:

    Gunner,
I think Locke did better than you think he did. Not ready to say that he’s on the road to being an all-star again.
But I think Morris didn’t do him any favors last night. He didn’t pitch as bad as his line in the box score looks.

  19. JD says:

You guys are both better than my 0-4 record.

  20. Arriba Wilver says:

    For a midweek day game?

  21. theplanisworking says:

    Stinks. ;)

  22. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++

  23. Arriba Wilver says:

TC—if you bike to the game, take pictures.

  24. Definitely fighting it, Gunner. Still not 100% I believe. Runs out of gas very early, possible due to ST injury.

The guy they called up to replace him, Irwin, had a couple really rough starts for Indy, but he threw real well last time out against Boston’s AAA club.

  25. Thundercrack says:

I don’t think there will be many open spots in the lots on the city side. Everyone who normally parks on the N.Shore (for work) will be forced to find other parking…which will be on the city side

  26. Thundercrack says:

If I bike to the game, my wife will take the pictures. Because she’ll be driving the car beside me.

  27. The unfortunate situation Lambo has put himself in by having a lousy (but meaningless) ST. Hard to push back up. It’ll be even harder when Polanco is ready.

  28. Patrick(ri) says:

I am certainly no hitting coach, but does anyone else think Ike has a long, sometimes looping and almost always slow swing?

  29. Cal Hammer says:

Let see if they win 10 games a month and there’s 6 months in the season that’s 60 wins. History is repeating itself as far as Hurdle goes when he won the pennant in Colorado the next yr he won 78 games and the following yr he was fired!!!!

  30. The Gunner says:

I hear ya, TC. Time will tell, I hope I am wrong about Locke being a fluke.

  31. Thundercrack says:

I think Locke being an All-Star is a fluke. But as I said this morning, I think he still has the potential to be a good #5.

  32. Cal Hammer says:

He has a swing like Adam LaRouche!!!! with less contact but he Walks more.

  33. bpn8pitt says:

Patrick, after the deal I checked with a couple buddies in NYC and checked some national blogs that discussed the trade. All the Met fans said Davis had a lot of issues with breaking pitches and could be very streaky.

Personally I think they needed an upgrade from Ishikawa. But how much better he is I don’t know.

I really wonder what becomes of Lambo. Polanco will be in RF in 6 weeks. Gaby and Davis can’t play anywhere else. We LL see how it shakes out.

  34. Patrick(ri) says:

If he is in a bad streak, sure hope he breaks out soon.

  35. Stuart says:

I’m starting to develope a theory that teams need different types of mgrs at different times of their development. The Pens were ready for someone with looser reins after Therrien. Now, I’m starting to wonder if they need more of a disciplinarian at the current stage. I think Clint’s message might get old too fast for him to stay long. I see plate approach as a big issue under this mgt.

    Stuart

  36. Patrick(ri) says:

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the starting lineup for your last place Pittsburgh Pirates . . .

    Hope it is different tomorrow.

  37. Karen22 says:

He even LOOKS LIKE Adam LaRoche!!

  38. Barb says:

Dear God Sanchez what a train wreck. When is Russell coming off DL?

  39. Karen22 says:

WHOA!! When is Russell Martin coming back?? This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!

  40. Karen22 says:

You beat me to it, Barb. Really, this cannot continue. Train wreck is putting it mildly!

  41. Milo Hamilton says:

But hey, he hosts a rockin’ Twitter Tuesday. C’mon ladies, let’s get our priorities straight. :)

  42. Barb says:

Stewart should be behind the plate or did he play last night? Steve Blass just made the understatement of the year……Sanchez has had problems throwing behind the plate. REALLY!!!!!

  43. Barb says:

Talk about being a TWIT. Forget Twitter and work on your basics. SHEESH.

  44. The Gunner says:

The bad news is Tony is definitely a defensive liability / the good news is he has a low salary

  45. Barb says:

Oh well we know where the BMTIB priorities are don’t we?

  46. Nate83 says:

On the bright side we now have two starting pitchers with and ERA below 4.00. Morton just went to 3.99 with that last out since that run was unearned.

  47. Karen22 says:

    GLARING DUH!!!!

  48. Karen22 says:

Chalk up another run to BAD defense. Going nowhere so far with pitching and defense! It’s the name of the game.

  49. Nate83 says:

Yes they value defense more then most teams so Sanchez will not be the starting catcher next year unless he makes dramatic improvements.

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

“Pirates & Beer, what else do you need ?”

    More beer, obviously.

  51. JohninOshkosh says:

Giants 16-1 when scoring the first run.

    Per the great Henry Schulman.

  52. theplanisworking says:

    A LOT more!

    Frank’s Bowtie bar, anyone?? ;)

  53. theplanisworking says:

Ah, the good old days when I was told that C and 1B aren’t priorities in the present game. Got to spend $$$ elsewhere.
Well, after seeing the recent display of catching recently, C needs to be a priority.
And, with every game Stewart and Sanchez catch, Russel Martin’s salary for next year goes up.

Hope the team pulls it out, I think I will go mow the grass in the dark.

    :D

  54. Good night to get them number 2.

  55. 21sthebest says:

    Yup.

  56. The Gunner says:

I think Barb meant something else as it relates to BMTIB priorities. Catcher will be a problem position in 2015, we are getting a sneak preview right now.

  57. JohninOshkosh says:

How’s the talent waitressing at the Bowtie Bar, anyway ?

  58. JohninOshkosh says:

You said it, Lucky . Could use a “W” tonight, that’s for sure.

  59. Andrew says:

Game has been shifting to offensive catchers, caught stealing league wide is on pace to be lowest ever. (Tony Sanchez is doing his part.)

  60. I said on the morning thread, he had to develop the problems, from injury, mentally or something. When he left BC, he had a gun and it was accurate.

  61. JohninOshkosh says:

I loved Tony Pena. That is all.

  62. Andrew says:

Tim Williams: Wandy w/ 7 runs in the 4th inning after 3 shutout innings. Last time he went 2 shutout then gave up 4 runs. Should be a RP when he returns.

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

Wandy just gave up 7 runs in the 4th inning to the heavy hittin’ Bowie Baysox. Only 2 homers though.

  64. Andrew says:

First I have seen this, if it is old news sorry, but the Pirates offered Polanco a George Springer like deal.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/source–pirates-offered-star-prospect-gregory-polanco-a-long-term-deal-232433631.html

  65. Milo Hamilton says:

    Shouldn’t return. Ever.

  66. Brandie says:

    I miss Tony Pena.

  67. But AA games don’t mean anything.

  68. Nate83 says:

I knew that Gunner. I was pointing out that in my opinion it isn’t always about money and the owner being cheap (which I believe he is). They will more then likely not go the cheap route next year and will spend money to get a catcher because Sanchez does not look to be the answer.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s going to go over like the Hindenburg. “You listen here buddy, if you don’t accept our team friendly deal we’ll just keep you down there until you’re “ready”.

  70. If he developed this problem and wasn’t born with it, there’s a chance he can overcome it.

  71. The Gunner says:

Thank God Wandy only gave up 2 HRs.

  72. Andrew says:

Well I certainly hope they didn’t do that, that would be grounds for legal action.

  73. The Gunner says:

That’s right, Lucky. Doesn’t sound like Wandy is ready to contribute at the big league level.

  74. Mercy. The only thing that would do for a player is guard against injury or failure. I’m glad somebody advised him against it.

  75. theplanisworking says:

Isn’t that goofy wife of a Reds pitcher working there??? ;)

  76. theplanisworking says:

    I miss Manny Sanguillen.

  77. Brandie says:

    I miss Junior Ortiz!

  78. theplanisworking says:

    What about Senior Ortiz?? ;)

  79. theplanisworking says:

    What a mess, Lucky.

Many prayers needed for this situation.
Maybe Polanco will be kept at AAA til next year?
Just kidding, but man o man.

  80. The Gunner says:

I agree with you, but, unfortunately, Wandy will be back

  81. Keep the faith, brethren and sistern. Vance Worley has thrown 6 innings tonight for Indy. Only 1 run, 5 hits, no walks, 4 K’s. 75 pitches, 50 strikes. Help may be an interstate away.

  82. I was being sarcastic. Looks like we can derive something from this one.

  83. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I’m beginning to have some real doubts about Tony Sanchez….Not to mention he was a pretty high #1 pick.
Can someone (preferably Jeff Branson) tell me why he is always chopping down on the ball?!

  84. The Gunner says:

Sounds like Tim Worley had a good night, the Bucs need all the pitching help we can get

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

The Pirates are currently crafting a response. I’m really hoping for a prepared statement from Coonelly.

  86. JohninOshkosh says:

Jeff Samardzija gave retiring Paul Konerko a “14″ from the Cubs famed scoreboard tonight as a gift before the Cubs/Sox game.

Both men doing their farewell tour for their respective clubs.

  87. Wild Bill says:

Big fun available watching the Habs and Broons. 2 – 0 Habs, giving Boston all they want.

  88. The Gunner says:

it’s looking like the Jay Hey hot hand is cooling off.

  89. Andrew says:

Deal apparently included options that would have potentially paid Polanco between $50-60 million, first seven years were for $25 million.

    http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24552994/pirates-offered-prospect-polanco-whos-still-in-minors-a-7-year-deal

  90. Milo Hamilton says:

Neal Huntington on Polanco report, “We will refrain on commenting on any player specific contract rumors.”

That’s Neal’s way of confirming the Jeff Passan story.

  91. Bizrow says:

Casino is 20, but a nice short walk to the T, which is free.

I don’t know, would have the same problem myself

PS, just bring home a win ;-)

  92. Barb says:

    Get Sanchez outta there!!!!

  93. Milo Hamilton says:

Looks like Polanco’s agent is calling anyone that will listen.

  94. Barb says:

    Habs now up 3-0.

  95. The Gunner says:

Walker, Cutch & Pedro – time for the big boys to step up

  96. Arriba Wilver says:

    Good to know.

  97. Andrew says:

    Stretch passing the Boston defense.

  98. Wild Bill says:

Starting to wonder if facing Rask would be better than facing Price?

  99. Lad 9 says:

LOL. Snuck one in there Osh. Nice………

  100. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++++++++++++++

I am just happy this didn’t get buried in secret for 9 months.
    Baby steps, I guess……….

  101. Stuart says:

    I even loved Smokey Burgess!

    Stuart

  102. Wild Bill says:

Watching Hudson pitch is pleasurable pain. He’s really good.

  103. Arriba Wilver says:

I think you got your wish.

  104. Arriba Wilver says:

I have never heard catchers aren’t a priority. But that’s just me.

    Never.

  105. Milo Hamilton says:

He was available. 2 years / $23 million. Very affordable.

  106. Brandie says:

    I miss Tom Prince.

    Good reference to the Smokester!

    Nice to see you Stu.

  107. Arriba Wilver says:

    Milo—that would be fun.

If true, we’re just mimicking the Houston Astros.

Again, if true, can’t blame them for trying.

  108. Milo Hamilton says:

Right now I blame them for everything.

  109. Arriba Wilver says:

Isn’t that $15 million more than the Pirates are willing to pay?

    ( Couldn’t resist).

    ;-)

  110. Thundercrack says:

I think he was another one that wanted to pitch on the West Coast

  111. Brandie says:

He will probably sputter some nonsense about how Polanco’s deal is among the most elite deals of all time, kind of like that TV deal with Root Sports.

  112. Arriba Wilver says:

You must be a Yinzer. ;-)

  113. Milo Hamilton says:

Being from Georgia that makes sense.

  114. Thundercrack says:

Lambo isn’t in the Indy lineup again.

    Is coming here or not.

  115. Baywatch says:

You bein’ a baaaaad boy, Arriba! (insert Lou Costello accent here)

  116. theplanisworking says:

    Hahahahahaha!!

    + many!

  117. Milo Hamilton says:

I really think he was, and then last night happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had come all the way here & now has to go all the way back.

  118. theplanisworking says:

    Yep.
    Nailed it Brandie Cakes.

  119. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks, Lad!

  120. Wild Bill says:

Morton deserves to win a game tonight – it would be a shame not to get it.

  121. Thundercrack says:

6 years pitching in Oakland, California

  122. Milo Hamilton says:

As I said, anything to get out of Georgia.

  123. Milo Hamilton says:

These are the jokes Thunder. At least try to play along. :)

  124. Thundercrack says:

Not everyone wants or can follow along with your ongoing comedy routine.

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

    Alrighty then.

  126. The Gunner says:

    Looks like a tie

  127. Lad 9 says:

Boggles my mind how Alvarez did not even attempt to go to the opposite field there. Especially on that first pitch. And he is not alone. Hitting into the shift in that situation is the ultimate in selfishness.

  128. Andrew says:

Not sure if there is enough there to overturn it.

  129. Andrew says:

    And nevermind.

  130. Milo Hamilton says:

    A wait off win.

  131. Lad 9 says:

Replay works! Marte partay! Raise it! Woo hoo

  132. Wild Bill says:

    What a Wild ending!!

  133. The Gunner says:

Call a doctor, sports fans! What a finish!!!!

  134. Bizrow says:

    +++

  135. Lad 9 says:

    +++++

  136. Thundercrack says:

Is this the first walk off in MLB due to replay?

  137. TJA says:

I am still too much of a purist to like the instant replay….but, we’ll take it. Crazy!

  138. Wild Bill says:

    First I’ve heard of.

  139. TJA says:

    It may be, TC

  140. Bizrow says:

    I’ll take the win

That is one thing Marte brings to the show

  141. The Gunner says:

I think so. Gotta love the post game show, the only way Gaby gets on the show is as Marte’s interpreter.

  142. Lad 9 says:

Absolutely great slide. Pence definitely has trouble with the Clemente Wall. Two nights n a row he butchered one.

  143. Bizrow says:

    Thats what Root Sports said

But can you trust that ;-)

  144. Patrick(ri) says:

Strange days, strange plays & RIP the days of Gerry Meals calls.

  145. Thundercrack says:

After watching Hunter Pence play RF in PNC Park the past two nights, I feel a little better that we didn’t trade for him.

    :-)

  146. pattonbb says:

Yea, the Pirates suck at winning close games…oops, wrong thread. Sorry.

    ….fear the Bones….

  147. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    Crazy!….Marte + Replay = A Pirate win

  148. Baywatch says:

Up here!! Aren’t all our wins goofy college-type wins? Sheesh, I’ll take it!

  149. Barb says:

Wow I turn on the Habs and Broons to see the end of the game and Martay started the Partay without me.

  150. Andrew says:

What was Shawn Thornton doing out there after the empty net goal?

  151. theplanisworking says:

    SCHWACK !!!

  152. Karen22 says:

It’s Partay time! Well, that was interesting!

    :)

  153. Barb says:

    Goon patrol.

  154. Baywatch says:

Yeah, Buddy!! And LOL at Milo’s Wait Off Win!! Good one!!

  155. JohninOshkosh says:

    …indeed.

  156. JohninOshkosh says:

Hold on! We just might have a series brewing in the Twin Cities!

    #Mild

  157. dennis g. says:

You can park at The Rivers Casino for free, walk about a block to the T station and take a free street car one stop to PNC. (No children under 18 or 21 I don’t know which can enter the property.)

  158. dennis g. says:

The minimum age to enter the casino property is 21 but having checked their site I think parking is free unless there is a major event occurring and I don’t think a 12:30 baseball game on a Wednesday is a major event. I parked there on Monday for free.

  159. The Bucs should’ve done this well on Monday night when at one point they were 6 runs ahead. Last night, they got an exceptional performance from Charlie Morton and Watson won it in relief in the 9th, and you wonder why they couldn’t do this more often.

  160. tdb1977 says:

A little late to this party – but we normally park at the Pittsburgh Parking Authorities garage across from the Bedenem (I think its that theatre) and walk across the bridge from there. Event parking is 5.00 at that garage. Not sure if it will be full for a day game.

As for my wife and my record … 6-2 so far. Have seen just about half of the Pirates wins this season. Not sure if that is a good thing or not. Maybe we need to be added to payroll and flown around the country as a good luck charm? Next game will be Sunday night.
