  3. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks, Tom.

Three professional Pittsburgh teams playing at home at the same time. Pirates, Penguins and Riverhounds.

Good night to ride your bike to the venue!

  4. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hi Bay.

    Up here!

Enjoy the games and the city.

  5. Garrett Jones has played only 1st Base for the Miami Marlins this season. He has a .252 average with 7 doubles and 5 HRs. He has kicked in 15 ribbies.

And his Marlins are in 1st Place!

  6. But does he have 2 grand slams with 2 different teams like Ike?

    :|

  7. theplanisworking says:

Bucs need to get to Mr. Wacha early tonight.
Frankie has struggled, he needs a good outing. (Please).

One day closer until He Who Shall Not be named gets here. Unless he signs a real contract in the interim.

  8. NMR says:

And Casey McGehee is still hitting over .300! You literally cannot predict baseball.

  9. If that’s not unsustainable, I don’t know what is.

  10. The Gunner says:

Great point, Lucky. And don’t forget, Ike has a slightly lower salary as compared to GI Jones.

  11. NMR says:

Garrett’s nerd stats point to that as well, but here’s to hoping he beats the odds. One of, if not my favorite Huntington-Era Buccos. Great to see him succeeding!

  12. Tom P. says:

It may say something about the pedigree of today’s roster addition Mr. Morel that the video highlight of him on the Pirates’ website is a solo home he hit in 2011 for the White Sox.

  13. JohninOshkosh says:

Masahiro Tanaka pitching for the Yankees at Miller Park tonight against Yovani Gallardo. Might be an opportunity for the Pirates to pick up a game on the Crew.

Tanaka has not lost in his last forty starts. I know that is meaningless to the Sabermetric crowd, but I’m still impressed.

  14. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++

  15. Milo Hamilton says:

Travis Snider’s suspension has been upheld, he’s unavailable tonight & tomorrow leaving the Pirates without an extra outfielder. The Cardinals are throwing three righthanders this weekend. Yep, Brent Morel was the right way to go.

  16. 21sthebest says:

Jones also has an OPS 25 points lower than Pirates first basemen.

  17. Andrew says:

    And Ike Daivs OPS+ 105, Garret Jones OPS+ 102, Pirates as a team OPS+ 96, 6th in the NL.

The Pirates have the offense to be competitive, pitching is the issue, and Burnett would not have helped with last night’s outing. But his collapsing strike out rate and propensity for giving up the long ball would fit right in with this Pirates rotation.

  18. Lad 9 says:

For some reason, the Morel promotion just infuriates me. At some point, you have to ask if they actually want to win. A loss now counts exactly the same as one in September.

  19. theplanisworking says:

  22. The Gunner says:

Yeah, I see where Morel is batting a very strong .215 at Indy. He must have pictures of Frank guzzling his hooch.

  23. Arriba Wilver says:

I hear he chews on as many sunflower seeds as Lunchbox.

    There’s that.

  24. Not sure how many of you will know what this means, but a longtime poster on the old PBC Blog at the other paper who went by Nutting Hostage died this past week. He was 49. That was confirmed, including an obit in the Trib using his real name, which I’ll leave out here. Just wanted to share.

  25. The Gunner says:

Now I understand why the BMTIB called Morel up – thanks for the clarification, AW

  26. Karen22 says:

Oh no! I remember him well. Very sad! :(

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

Melancholy happy trails. Way too young.

  28. Arriba Wilver says:

Yeah, his bad outing last night “ballooned” his ERA to .290.

  29. theplanisworking says:

    Thanks DK.

Jose Pagan posted this info a few days ago.
    Terribly tragic.

  30. FlBucco says:

But he would not cost the Bucs Jacoby Jones ;-)

  31. FlBucco says:

Not if you are serious about trying to win – I am turning in the rest of my 20 game package – if the FO wants
to insult me with a .215 hitting journeyman when a great RF prospect sits a couple of 100 miles away to save
some money – I will save some money and stay home for the rest of the year.

  32. Baywatch says:

Count it a real privilege to have known Nutting Hostage personally, and as a friend. We had stayed somewhat in touch in the past few years. As I’m here tonight, back at PNC for the first time in 3 years, I hereby declare it IN MY SEAT the Memorial Nutting Hostage Night!

  33. The Gunner says:

at least you’re not bitter, FlBucco!

  34. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++++++++

    HEY BAY!
    Win one for NuHo.

  35. Andrew says:

    FIP 4.39 xFIP 3.94

  36. Patrick(RI) says:

With respect to former Pirates playing well, I had a chance to see Brock Holt play shortstop for the Pawtucket Pawsox. It was a nice day yesterday, and the ball park is beautiful. Too bad I missed Indianapolis last week, as locals said Polanco was super.

At 5′ 10″ at best, Holt still looks like a little leaguer out on the diamond, but the kid can really play ball. He made one really spectacular turn on a double play and several deep stops and throws (better arm than I thought he had). At the plate, he led off got a single and a triple (both ripped). When the sox brought him up, he played 3rd base well in Middlebrook’s absence. I was very surprised to see how well he can handle shortstop, showing sure hands, strong arm and good range. Too bad we didn’t throw in somebody else in that deal.

  37. The Gunner says:

I seem to remember the BMTIB didn’t regard young Holt as SS material.

  38. FlBucco says:

Gotta love the hustle by the MVP – he seems to loaf to the ball a couple of times a year and Carpenter looked for it and took advantage – no harm done – but stupid play in an important game.

  39. Patrick(ri) says:

A very small sample, but he looked better than what I see watching Pirates on TV.

  40. The Gunner says:

I agree with you 100% about this, Patrick.

  41. Lad 9 says:

Going to be upset if Jones is the PTBNL, but I think you are correct.

  42. Bay bringin it home! A 2-spot off Wacha in the first. Keep it up.

  43. theplanisworking says:

    +++++++++

  44. Baywatch says:

    Luck Be A Lady Tonight!

  45. Patrick(ri) says:

Is Blass making clear he is discussing the Cardinals lineup? (Get past the first few, etc). He seemed a bit non-plussed?

  46. theplanisworking says:

Reverend, why do I think of Pac-Man when I hear Wacha’s name?

  47. Baywatch says:

First ground rule chip shot I ever saw!

  48. Or the Muppets?

    Where is Brandelissa, anyway?

  49. theplanisworking says:

    Taking over the world.
    Haven’t seen her.

  50. Baywatch says:

Franklin Delano Liriano!! (From the Brandi Vaults?)

  51. Thundercrack says:

Listening to the radio I’m not sure who was more lost on that last play; Nevrett or the Cardinal CF

  52. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m no saber guy (although not hostile to stuff that really matters).

My understanding, though, is OPS+ is not very revealing of anything, at least until the end of the year.

And are you swearing at me with this FIP and xFIP stuff?

    ;-)

One other note, on the strikeouts. Clint wanted AJ to not focus on the strikeouts so much, but try to go deeper in games.

  53. Arriba Wilver says:

Should we also take back Joel and give back Melancon and Stolmy? They apparently wanted Holt. Takes 2 to tango. Not going to second guess that deal.

  54. The Gunner says:

That train has left the station for sure

  55. Baywatch says:

Rain Delay Entertainment by ’50s group Frankie Liriano & The Gopher Balls

  56. :D

    Gotta get those back, Baystar.

  57. The Gunner says:

How many times during rain delays is Root going to continue to show that piece on Rick Sofield?

    Once was fine, thank you!

  58. 21sthebest says:

I have a couple hundred channels on my TV! ;-)

  59. MadTurk says:

    Where are you staying Baywatch?

  60. Thundercrack says:

The other night at the game I yelled ‘get yourself a beverage’ to Sofield. He flashed me the Z.

  61. The Gunner says:

Ha ha – I know what u mean & most of the stations stink. I just flipped to the hockey game & watched NY dominate the Pens.

  62. Thundercrack says:

Yes. And I think We should evaluate Holt for what he does in the majors. I liked Holt, but I don’t think he could play SS

  63. Florida Steeler says:

Who was that pathetic .215 hitter the Pirates called up?? Where is Lambo??

  64. 21sthebest says:

    +

  65. 21sthebest says:

    He’s on the DL.

  66. The Gunner says:

Some freakin A.H. that will never be a factor.

  67. J Walter Weatherman says:

This game is a microcosm of the Pirates biggest problem this season. Pitchers who aren’t nearly as good as they were last year.

  68. Bizrow says:

    Wow, he lived near me

    Thanks for the info Dejan

  69. Bizrow says:

Who was the announcer that said ” a low fly ball to center”??

I think that was back in the drug years

  70. Bizrow says:

Its May and in the 7th inning, Mr Weatherspoon

  71. Wild Bill says:

Boy did Neil get all of that!

  72. Bizrow says:

    Ahem….

  73. The Gunner says:

PRNW has become very dependable in the clutch hitting dept.

  74. Patrick(ri) says:

Yes, indeed Gunner. I am convinced more than ever that he is healthier this season. And, more focussed?

  75. The Gunner says:

And Mercer must have gotten wind of your Brock Holt posts earlier this evening. Jordy’s had a good game.

  76. Patrick(ri) says:

    Here’s hoping for lots more!

  77. The Gunner says:

Melancon’s gotta close em out now

  78. Milo Hamilton says:

Good job Bay & Mrs. Bay. Oh, good job Buccos too.

  79. Karen22 says:

Thank you, Mr. Walker, for salvaging a Pittsburgh sports night!!

  80. Baywatch says:

Woo-Hoo! Am I still in time to say “UP HERE, Everybody!” You just can’t beat that three run Neil Walker Home Run IN PERSON at the greatest park in America! Walked over the Clemente Bridge the mile to our hotel with some kind of spring in my step. BACK AT IT TOMORROW!!

  81. Baywatch says:

    ++++++ and one more! +
