Comments

  1. I’ll be watching you, Pirates!

There’s plenty of down time in a hockey game, and I’ll be with you every commercial.

Hold on until the 6th inning, and I’ll be with every pitch!!

  2. cmat0829 says:

    BUCCO LINEUP:

    Harrison RF
    Walker 2B
    Cutch CF
    Pedro 3B
    Tabata LF
    Ike 1B
    Mercer SS
    Stewart C

    * No Snyder, I guess we won’t see if the Brewers want to bean Lunchbox at least in tonight’s game.
    * Stewart gets a rare start….
    * I’m really starting to doubt Pedro in the cleanup spot… if I’m manager, I might go with something like (when all are healthy and Polanco is here):

    vs RHP
    Polanco RF
    Davis 1B
    Walker 2B
    Cutch CF
    Pedro 3B
    Marte LF
    Martin C
    Mercer SS

    vs LHP
    Polanco RF
    Marte LF
    Cutch CF
    Gaby 1B
    Walker 2B
    Pedro 3B
    Martin C
    Mercer SS

  3. Bizrow says:

    No Marte, this is worrisome

  4. NMR says:

Pedro is hitting .298/.377/.426 for the month of May and still has a lower BABIP than some pitchers. He’s just fine.

  5. Jim S. says:

    cmat:

Did you not watch him hit on Sunday night? 3 solid hits, plus a smoked 395′ liner almost to the wall in CF that was nearly a slam. I’m not sure I’ve seen him with a better approach than he’s had for the last few weeks in all his time as a Buc.

  6. JohninOshkosh says:

As soon as my wife gets home, I’m bouncing to Miller Park.

Which is a good thing, because I don’t want to get on the Pens game thread at all.

I would say in the 7 years of reading Dejan and following his various blog incarnations, the only blog I routinely follow, I have never disagreed more with the moderator and most of his great posters than the stuff I’ve read the last few days. (Actually, much of it started in October already). Which is OK, it is only sports. Just gonna stay away because, even if the Pens win, the narratives I categorically disagree with will continue.

    I choose not to run!

Excited to see Cole in person. I “saw” a baseball brawl when I was three. Maybe, I’ll see another one tonight.

    Go Bucs!

  7. cmat0829 says:

Maybe the severe shift, and Pedro’s ability to hit it right into the shift, contributes to the low BABIP?
I do know that we have to FEAST when Pedro is hot and we have to live through the FAMINE, but I guess I react to so many LOB lately by Pedro…..

  8. cmat0829 says:

Yes, I did watch him… and I do agree his 2014 approach has been better… it isn’t like I want him out of the lineup, just thinking we might have a better overall lineup with Pedro not in the cleanup spot. But as CH said, when Pedro hits it , it goes out…so a 395 flyout for Pedro is another’s can of corn… but I’ll admit I’m being a little harsh on El Toro…..

  9. NMR says:

Fact is that Pedro will not end the year with a .222 BABIP. Just not gonna happen.

Move Pedro now and you miss out on the positive regression.

  10. NMR says:

Do yourself a favor and sneek as close to home plate as you can, John. Seeing Cole throw a baseball live is wild.

    Enjoy!

  11. JohninOshkosh says:

Going by myself. I’m what Thomas Boswell called a baseball wanderer. I move around the ballpark as much as possible and as much as the ushers will let me.

Will do. Maybe, I’ll try to sit by Front Row Amy.

  12. The Gunner says:

Glad to see our spark plug Jay Hey getting the start in RF – Beat ‘em Bucs!!!

  13. Milo Hamilton says:

Have a great time. If you have a ticket for Thursday you should sell it to a Brewers fan. They should be willing to pay top dollar to watch that beat down.

  14. NMR says:

Gregory Polanco is good at baseball, rather unquestionably so.

But has anyone else noticed his strikeout rate jumping up to 18%? Not high by any means, overall, but it is a 6% jump from AA and his highest since rookie ball.

Let’s hope he’s just getting bored, and not that pitchers are starting to find a hole.

  15. NMR says:

Saving grace will be getaway day, Milo. Well, at least if the Brewers manage like Hurdle.

  16. Milo Hamilton says:

As long as he doesn’t have to face AA hitters.

  17. Arriba Wilver says:

Like how I play the stock market. Buy high, sell low. ;-)

  18. Patrick(RI) says:

Please, no “one game at a time” cliches. I have a better one: a “must win” series. May even require a “sweep” to get back in “the chase.” End of cliches.

  19. Arriba Wilver says:

I knew there was a reason I was going to watch the game tonight.

Oh, and enjoy Cole, too, John. A real treat to watch.

  20. Arriba Wilver says:

Yeah, I heard some sobering statistics about how many teams with the Pirate record in early May had made the playoffs. If the info was correct, it was the same number of times that the Pens have won a home game 7 after losing game 6 on the road.

    Let’s go Pens!

  21. Brandie says:

Echoing sentiments I placed on the Pens thread….time to put the demons to bed!!!!

    GO BUCCOS!!!!!!

  22. Thundercrack says:

Polanco already 2-2. Double and a triple tonight.

  23. The Gunner says:

    TC

It’ll be another 6 weeks or so until GP arrives unless the BMTIB signs him to a long term deal.

  24. Patrick(ri) says:

Did Martin bring his gloves on this trip? Shouldn’t box w/o a pair.

  25. Lad 9 says:

Front Row Amy is in the house tonight!

  26. Brandie says:

    Hubba Hubba!

  27. John, you should have caught that HR since you’re a ballpark wanderer.

  28. BA back up to .370

  29. Lad 9 says:

BRANDIEEEEEEE! I see you too are a thread hopper this evening. :)

  30. theplanisworking says:

    Lad!!!!!

Went to the charity bball game at New Castle saturday night.
First time I had seen that team live. Even though is was an exhibition game, you can just tell how athletic and talented those kids are.

Highlight of the night was the coaches 7 year old boys scoring baskets at the end of the game.

Oh, there were 1500 people at this charity game.
    Yes, 1500.
    Was a good, warm time.

  31. Thundercrack says:

I think Stewart helped Cole get that strikeout of Overnay His glove didn’t move.

  32. Brandie says:

    LAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDD NIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNEEEEEEE!!!!!

    HOP HOP HOP!!!

  33. Arriba Wilver says:

Amy knows when that camera is on her.

  34. The Gunner says:

So far tonight, the Bucs are 0 for 3 with RISP

  35. Polanco now 3-3 with 3 RBI. Continuing to learn.

  36. theplanisworking says:

Needs to work on the lights in his eyes…….

    ;)

  37. The Gunner says:

Yep, GP continues to learn his craft & develop professionally to increase his chances of success once he reaches the major leagues.

  38. Milo Hamilton says:

The runs are earned but once again, it’s all about the defense. Or lack thereof.

  39. 21sthebest says:

    Make that 4-4 TC.

  40. The Gunner says:

    Not to mention 0 for 4 w/RISP

  41. Brent Morel is 0-3 though.

  42. Patrick(ri) says:

Yeah, but Polanco doesn’t. Have to face Cy Estrada and his “sneaky fast” fastball.

  43. Brandie says:

    Pot Stirrer!

  44. Brandie says:

HA! Plan Van Gundy!!! Just HA!!! ;)

  45. Sorry, I forgot that.

  46. Patrick(ri) says:

Sorry that should be one sentence. Took three tries to keep the Mini from calling him poblano.

  47. TC and the Pot Stirrers is the name of our rock group, Branded. Our percentage is very low.

  48. Cy has tossed 102 pitches. Time to take him out or get him Tommy John surgery, one of the two.

  49. Lad 9 says:

Sometimes in sports Plan, you just run across a special group. This New Castle team is one of those groups. They were extraordinarily well coached, they had unreal talent, and they were true sportsmen. You are very lucky to be a New Castle native and have an association with them. Glad you enjoyed it!

  50. Parrothead says:

It must be nice to have hitters that actually get hits with runners in scoring position.

  51. The Gunner says:

    Lousy defense + 0 for 4 w/RISP = More Bucco losses

  52. Andrew says:

Haven’t seen much of the game, Cole appears to have been merely average.

  53. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Still time to comeback.

I think the Pirates need to pull the goalie…..oh wait.

Need to flip over to the pens side to see what was said. Should I count the amount of “fire Blysma” comments there are?

  54. Bizrow says:

Add the comment that we are living in 75 again. Total nonsense

  55. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Well that was

  56. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Fun

  57. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Why is Jared Hughes still with the Pirates?

  58. Patrick(ri) says:

Also nice to have a catcher who doesn’t have bunt to try to get a hit.

  59. Bizrow says:

    Building a bullpen is easy?

  60. Breakthestreak says:

Why is Jared Hughes on a MLB team???

  61. Thundercrack says:

Extremely stupid play and poor throw by Ike Davis.

  62. Bizrow says:

Its gonna be a long summer

  63. Breakthestreak says:

I knew Ike’s honeymoon would end. He was probably upgrade from what we had but he’s slow, below avg fielder and lifetime 2.30 type hitter. Not going to help us much. But is our pitching ever going to come around

  64. The Gunner says:

Don’t fret Biz. Papa Francisco & Wandy will stop the bleeding in Milwaukee.

  65. Andrew says:

    What was that half inning?

  66. bpn8pitt says:

I’m at a loss. Last year, on the rare occasions they didn’t get a good start, the defense and bullpen picked them up. 2014, on the rare occasion they get a good start, the defense and bullpen buries it.

  67. Patrick(ri) says:

A truly awful game, so far. How bad is it? They would be tied if they were playing the Penguins.

  68. bpn8pitt says:

You can tell Cutch isn’t right.

  69. cmat0829 says:

Depressing start to the road trip.. defense again very shaky and it just HAS to stop. First 2 runs score on Jayhey’s misjudging a pop fly…. then the follies in the 7th…. THAT said, ONE run in that slow pitch softball stadium is NOT NEARLY ENOUGH offense. The only way to win in that ballpark is to score some RUNS.

  70. Andrew says:

The tire fire is on the other thread.

  71. Andrew says:

Nutting need to open the wallet and get an exorcist.

  72. Patrick(ri) says:

Could not resist the low hanging . . .

  73. cmat0829 says:

Down 4 runs in the 8th… 1 out… and Pedro pulling off the ball trying to hit a 5-run homer… makes zero sense. he’s a good athlete and I refuse to believe he couldn’t have just peppered a ball to beat the shift there and get another baserunner on….

  74. Bizrow says:

    +++

But its gonna be a long summer

    Missed opportunity for the PBC

  75. bpn8pitt says:

I’m not even touching tommorows thread. Let the Pens fan vent….Will read what Dejan has to say. Always intelligent. Thought out.

  76. bpn8pitt says:

Mercer had a nice night at the plate. Glad he has turned the bat around.

Concerned about the health of this team.

  77. The Gunner says:

Amen, Biz. 2013 was a real fairy tale.

  78. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Over 162 games, you’re going to have banged up players.

That’s all I see the pirates are at this point.

  79. Andrew says:

Cannot blame either of you, I like hockey but when success is based upon playoffs it is a roller coaster of emotion, I just enjoy the grind of baseball much more.

  80. bpn8pitt says:

They had some injuries last year. I just didn’t think it was this early.

A lot of those guys in the bullpen just don’t look the same. Poor command, walks. Of course, the defense doesn’t help.

Whole team has a different feel. More of a 90 loss, than 90 win feel.

  81. Andrew says:

I refuse to believe the Pirates are as bad as that 4-12 stretch or whatever it was, but the issue is the hole they are in, have to stop digging, and get some starting pitching.

  82. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

So were off the Frankie band wagon after a month+?

    Wandy tho…..

  83. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Short post, but at first was gonna rip it……

  84. bpn8pitt says:

That’s the big question, cause beyond Cumpton I don’t know where that’s coming from.

And if they fall too far, they are selling, not buying.

  85. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

They’ve won the last 3? series.

That’s a step in the right direction.

Will need to get a SP and a SS if they want to make a run it.

  86. bpn8pitt says:

    Tough night Pittsburgh.

Gnite. 5 am and the trail comes early.

  87. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    I’d say neither really.

    Biggest issue is the pitching.

  88. Andrew says:

There won’t be any moves until at least June, the loss of Taillon hurt, no Morton or Liriano coming off the DL like last year. Starting pitching is always overpriced at deadline, if the Pirates are even buyers.

Just need results, however they come.

  89. Arriba Wilver says:

    Are the Steelers playing tonight?

    I have a hunch . . .
