  5. Milo Hamilton says:

    Game 7.

Remember, whatever misfortune, bad luck, bad bounces (oh, that ice on an 87 degree day), or bad calls meet the flightless birds tonight, they brought it on themselves. As is the case in every Game 7, only one of the two teams wants to be here. And it’s never the one that lost Game 6.

  6. Rbilak says:

No feel for the game. I am 50/50. That said, always go with better goalie. In that case I go with Rangers. Pens at home seem to play worse. Pressure is on them, not Rangers.

    1. Malkin promised a win game 6, so that did not work out.

    2. Far too many times we come out flat, why does game 7 make a difference to them?

    3. Who will take the first dumb penalty? Clarify, which Penguin?

    4. Scuderi, just gives me heartburn on PK.

    5. Powerplay, what does Dan go with, if 4 forwards, they will give up a shorthanded goal.

Win or lose, I cannot see them winning more than a game next round. I think the time for a change is overdue, Dan lost me when he whined about being a cup favorite. Great teams fear no one. The players do not listen to him, the amount of selfish undisciplined penalties is a long trend, is never addressed. I am afraid the win buys another year of “Entertaining” regular season hockey, followed by a flop. In the 90’s I never thought they should lose, now I expect them to lose. So onward to the game. Finally tell them it is an Olympic game, they seem to care more about that than the cup.

  7. Ryan says:

Can’t wait for the game to start. Not much more exciting than a game 7…but I hate series’ coming down to one game, anything can happen in ONE game, a goalie can steal the show, an injury can happen, anything. Doesn’t matter who’s better on paper, who “should” win, or who has the better record. All comes down to effort tonight.

I’m causiously optimistic. If the coaches and players can’t get themselves amped up and ready to give 150% in a game 7 in the SC Playoffs, they shouldn’t call themselves professionals.

    Let’s Go Pens!!

  8. theplanisworking says:

This will be interesting on so many different levels tonight.

    Who will be loose?
    Who will be tight?
    Who wants it more?
Will it come down to an (un)lucky bounce?

This series should be over already. The Rangers were dead tired, playing 5 games in 7 nights. They are playing with ‘house money’. They know the Pens didn’t want this game.

Sid and Fleury need to step up BIG TIME!
    If not, tee times available.

  9. Karen22 says:

Truism! Let’s just do it and go from here!

  10. Karen22 says:

  11. MarkV says:

Where’s Max Talbot when you need him?

  12. Thundercrack says:

Does anyone know if this game is a sellout?

    Gotta keep the streak alive!!!

  13. Poz says:

In the past I posted often. Not so much the last few years. I’m old and tired.

    But one tonight.

I saw this team play its best hockey after losing game one. Even though the eternal pessimest, I thought the Pens would close out game five at home.

    Wow! Was I wrong.

And the ghosts of playoffs past returned. With reason.

All I can say is that my ever-expanding gut tells me they find a way. Led by the stars the team steps up. Fleury makes those saves when he must.

    The Pens move on.

And now I sign off. I have plants to place in the garden before game time.

Go Pens – forecheck with flobberknocking passion- but do it while staying out of the penalty box.

  14. Arriba Wilver says:

    Enjoyable post, Poz.

  15. BillyBaduka says:

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!

  16. Karen22 says:

    I like that! :)

  17. Andrew says:

With a win the Penguins are in their fourth Conference Finals in seven years, with a loss who knows.

Random update: Gibbons on RW with Crosby and Kunitz during warmups. Malkin back between Jokinen and Neal.

  18. chethejet1 says:

Penguins have never valued toughness unless they had to. Whether it was Durbano and Kelly, or Tochett and Ulf, or Guerin and Roberts, this franchise has never wanted to develop players who were just kick ass take no prisoners players. It is even more true today. Shero understands he needed toughness last year, and Bylsma simply either won’t or will find ways to limit that style of play. I just can’t fathom that Mario is indifferent to Crosby getting hammered. I have been watching this crap for 45 years. I am never on Crosby. I would love to see him issue an ultimatum to Mario to fix this or good luck selling tickets next year with out me.

  19. Phil the Groundhog says:

Tonight’s game will be about heart. It is time to bear down and give 100%. The team that does that will win.

No matter the outcome, I’m a Penguin’s fan. Have been since they started. I still have my Blue Penguin from the glory days. It is a little faded (like me) but it sits proudly on the window sill in my living room.

    LET”S GO PENS!!!

  20. BillyBaduka says:

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!

  21. Brandie says:

Good post Wizard of Poz. :)

  22. Brandie says:

Time to put the demons to rest once and for all. Either play or her the *$#@ out of the way!!!!!!

  23. Brandie says:

    Get not her!

  24. Purple Moose says:

    Glass in, Bennett out

  25. radio wave says:

I was shocked yesterday to get a e mail saying there were tix available.

  26. cobra39 says:

A great day for hockey! (Hopefully not the last day for hockey.)

    Let’s go Pens!

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

This is a stat from Nate Silver, so therefore I’m inclined to trust it.

Average penalty minutes in Games 1 thru 6 since 1987: 16
Average penalty minutes in Game 7 since 1987: 8

Let it fly boys ! Liberties.

  28. Brandie says:

    Interesting stats Meye-low.

  29. Arriba Wilver says:

Time for Henrik to lose a game 7.

  30. hockeymonster says:

And that my friends is how you hold the line Maximus Decimus Maridius style!

  31. Milo Hamilton says:

Teams scoring first all time in Game 7 is 112-40 (.737).

  32. hockeymonster says:

Actually started well. Not enough backcheck on that rush. Lets stay with it.

  33. Purple Moose says:

Rangers 4th line scores against Pens 1st line. Crosby nowhere in picture as goal scored and is minus 1.

How about our 4th line scoring a goal, better yet how about our 1st line scoring a goal.

  34. cobra39 says:

    Clinging to that .263!

  35. Arriba Wilver says:

  36. Milo Hamilton says:

If starting well is falling behind, then yes they did. ;)

  37. Milo Hamilton says:

We’re basically already in overtime. If it gets to 2-0, it’s over.

  38. Ellie says:

I also have The Blue Penguin! Traveled the world with me, now cheering proudly atop the ‘puter. Let’s go, Pens!

  39. hockeymonster says:

    Stay with it…

  40. hockeymonster says:

I think one goal can become 2 or 3 if we stay with it.

  41. Milo Hamilton says:

By the way, where’s this been the last two games ?

  42. BillyBaduka says:

  43. Purple Moose says:

Rangers are collapsing in near the goal. Points are wide open, gotta get the puck back to the point and keep firing shots.

  44. hockeymonster says:

You mean NZ recognition and percentage dump ins?

  45. hockeymonster says:

Look for vitale to get a garbage goal.

  46. Milo Hamilton says:

    No, effort.

  47. hockeymonster says:

Effort wasn’t the problem in game 6. This is how we need to play.

  48. hockeymonster says:

  49. Milo Hamilton says:

Effort was indeed the problem in the 1st period of Game 6. The Rangers went up 2-0 & the game was over.

  50. hockeymonster says:

Poor NZ structure led to that 2-0 deficit. Structure better today.

  51. hockeymonster says:

Nice to see Neal pick up where BB left off

  52. Purple Moose says:

Is it just me or has Crosby’s hand-eye coordination completely left him? He has whiffed on a bunch of shots this playoffs and his passing is off.

  53. Florida Steeler says:

The difference: Lundqvist can single handedly beat you–Fleury cannot.

  54. Milo Hamilton says:

If the Rangers win tonight, Dominic Moore will have won more Game 7’s in Pittsburgh than any Penguin in their history.

  55. Rbilak says:

    1st Period Thoughts

    1. James Neal, if you don’t grow up in game 7, when?

    2. Dan puts him out on point, deserve the penalty. Watch Neal start 2nd period. Discipline Dan, Accountability.

    3. Is Malkin playing tonight?

    4. 4-2, how does that happen?

    5. Kris Letang, enjoy that money.

    6. Pens will press, D will pinch, odd man rushes will ensue.

    7. If Pens do not score soon, look for frustration penalties. It never changes.

  56. hockeymonster says:

I wanna see Sid spend this 2nd period working as a beast down low helping his D so he can generate his own speed up ice. They dont wanna give you speed…so EFFIN take it by starting low and moving your feet with power up ice.

  57. Purple Moose says:

Yep. I blame the offense and 87 and 18 more but the Rangers score on their only real chance of the period. Come on Fleury, we need you to be a wall.

  58. Purple Moose says:

Hockey produces amazing facts like that.

  59. Rbilak says:

Yes Sir. The only good if they lose is management may finally realize it

  60. cobra39 says:

I agree. He usually can ping-pong the puck between his skates and his stick with ease. Now? He’s fighting everything.

  61. hockeymonster says:

So disco puts Neal back on PP and this is how he repays him? Put PM back out there before we give up a shortie too…

  62. Purple Moose says:

So how do you fix a power play that stinks without having a single practice all series?????

  63. Wild Bill says:

The effort is there tonight. One lousy turnover by Niskie and it’s a four on two the other way. Can’t have it happen again.

The defense by the Rangers is impressive, even before taking Lundquist into account. Must screen him.

  64. hockeymonster says:

    Be less predictable.

  65. Florida Steeler says:

Hey, the “players coach” calls optional practices–what more do you want from him???

  66. Jandy says:

  67. Milo Hamilton says:

Hey, they practiced 5 on 3’s at the morning skate today. Plenty of those in 7th games.

  68. Purple Moose says:

Their arrogance is amazing. They think if they say it, then it will come true. They think that they just have to say something and then show up and it will appear without practice or adjustments……..I am trying to stay calm but 1/3 of this game is done and no points.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

Gibbons looked like Jim McGeough there. Actually, Gibbons is Jim McGeough.

  70. Jandy says:

  71. cobra39 says:

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

    Big Jussi rebound.

  73. Purple Moose says:

Great hands by Jokinen one of the two best players in these playoffs along with Martin

  74. Ellie says:

Ollie Jokinen (according to Mikey Lange)!

    (Think he’s excited, too?)

  75. Jandy says:

    It’s not just you

  76. cobra39 says:

    You ain’t Jokin-en. (Sorry.)

  77. BillyBaduka says:

  78. Jandy says:

    Milo produces more.:D

  79. Brandie says:

Good to see the score tied 1 to 1. Like I said before…time to put the demons to bed. Need to be professionals here. Good evening everyone.

  80. Jandy says:

    Don’t forget Sutter

  81. Jandy says:

  82. Jandy says:

    Good to see you Sistah!

  83. Jandy says:

  84. Jandy says:

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

Nice breakout pass by Sutter there. He should get an assist on that.

  86. Brandie says:

    DAYUM. They refuse to die!!!!

  87. Purple Moose says:

    And Letang covering………………………..NOBODY.

He had a tremendous game 3 and has been worse every game since

  88. Florida Steeler says:

Fleury–flopping around as usual. Stupid penalties continue over and over by this undisciplined team. Get a goal and Fleury immediately gives up another. Same scene every year.

  89. Milo Hamilton says:

    Sudden death again.

  90. Brandie says:

That’s what you get when you cross Maatta and Jussi!

  91. Purple Moose says:

  92. radio wave says:

    Yes, yes!

  93. Jandy says:

Sid looks like he’s in a different zone – and not a good one. He’s very out of sync

  94. hockeymonster says:

Do we even want a PP?

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

Don’t you have a PTA meeting or something ? ;)

  96. Jandy says:

  97. Jandy says:

  98. Jandy says:

    Hey hey!!!

  99. Florida Steeler says:

After watching Montreal last night, we would be in serious trouble against either team if we pulled this one out.

  100. Purple Moose says:

Crosby just passes the puck anywhere and hopes that something good happens instead of passing with some kind of purpose

  101. Florida Steeler says:

Neal and Kunitz have been useless.

  102. Milo Hamilton says:

If you ever wondered what a grown man choking looks like, it looks like James Neal right there.

  103. Jandy says:

Sid knows better, don’t you think?

  104. hockeymonster says:

He needed to take that puck to the net.

  105. Jandy says:

  106. Jandy says:

  107. TJ says:

I am going to guess if Crosby goes to the DMV tomorrow he is going to have to wait in line. Not sure anyone would recognize him.

  108. Florida Steeler says:

ha-ha, so far– the post of the evening.

  109. Jandy says:

I think you’re wrong. I think they’ll throw tomatoes and eggs at him.
    Hi Teddy Bear

  110. Purple Moose says:

Molinari just tweeted that Lundqvist robbed Neal…………he shot the puck into his damned chest.

  111. Jandy says:

You’re right Moose, Neal basically handed the puck to him

  112. Florida Steeler says:

What do you expect from Pittsburgh beat writers?? None of them have any guts. Smizik and Dejan are the ONLY Pittsburgh writers not afraid to call it like it is.

  113. Milo Hamilton says:

He was so spooked he nearly lost control before he could even shoot it.

  114. AKC says:

Well, 3rd period would be a nice time for Crosby to remember he is a superstar and captain.

  115. Jandy says:

    Not holding my breath

  116. Milo Hamilton says:

Doesn’t it suck when someone you like so much is doing so poorly and you’re at a loss to explain it.

  117. Purple Moose says:

I wonder what Coach One Plan Dan could possibly be telling them in the locker room?

    Any guesses?

  118. theplanisworking says:

Don’t wanna turn blue like me?? ;)

  119. Rbilak says:

    2nd Period Thoughts

    – The Letdown goal after getting one

    – Letang , Lecrap

    – pens will open it up, better score becuase eventually they will give one up.

    – Gut check time. Gonna be tough as Refs will put whistle away, Rangers blocking every shot they can, short shifts, Elite Franchise Goalie. 20 minutes.

  120. cobra39 says:

    “Get to your game”?

  121. Jandy says:

    Haha Hipposter!

Milo, I find it highly unusual Sid forgot he’s a very good hockey player and is doing the dumb chit he’s doing. Even Bortuzzo looks better.

  122. hockeymonster says:

If sid’s worried about getting hurt or hit in head than he’ll have some trouble taking puck to the net.

  123. Milo Hamilton says:

One little bit of strategery. Their decision making started getting really sketchy after they fell behind. Mainly defensemen (Maata) pinching and allowing odd man breaks. There’s no need for that yet. You’re only down one & there’s a whole period to go. Gotta be smart.

  124. AKC says:

Yes….and what sucks even more is that it isn’t the first playoffs series we have seen if. Unfathomable.

  126. Milo Hamilton says:

Play Pittsburgh Penguins Ice Hockey ?

  127. Purple Moose says:

Good post Milo. One of the more mind boggling things in a long, long time. Its gotten to the point that I just hope his line gets off the ice without giving up a goal.

  128. Jandy says:

he’ll not even get a shot off this period.

  129. cobra39 says:

We should get at least (and probably at most) PP before the end of the third. So, as you say, no need to gamble in first 10 minutes.

  130. Purple Moose says:

From the @Sportsnet stats department: Sidney Crosby hasn’t scored in the 3rd period or OT in 20 straight home playoff games

    (Mumbles Passion)

  135. cobra39 says:

I imagine we’ll see Malkin and Crosby reunited.

  136. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s Jamie Dixon. Oh, I’m sorry. That’s mumbles rebounds. Nevermind. :)

  137. cobra39 says:

    Lundquist is hot.

  138. J Walter Weatherman says:

Man, I can’t wait to see how good this Scuderi guy gets in 3 years.

  139. Florida Steeler says:

    Always is–not like our guy.

  140. J Walter Weatherman says:

All kidding aside, Paul Martin has been phenomenal in the playoffs. By far the Pens best player. Shame to waste his effort.

  141. Florida Steeler says:

He is NOT the problem tonight.

  142. J Walter Weatherman says:

Not really, but I’m not looking forward to 3 more years of him.

  143. Florida Steeler says:

    Very true–another Shero boondoggle

  144. Purple Moose says:

    Why penalize Malkin?

  145. cobra39 says:

Steady Eddie — except his name is Paul.

  146. Jandy says:

    #87 is.

  147. cobra39 says:

Wow. Pens fans are in a surly mood, no doubt.

  148. Purple Moose says:

13 minutes left. I cant believe I am sitting here watching this ____ for the fifth year in a row.

Cant anybody change the ending to this lousy movie?

  149. Jandy says:

Is that Lundqvist or Rask in goal? Same result

  150. cobra39 says:

    Lord help us!!!!!!

  151. Milo Hamilton says:

Maata needs to sit. Enough already.

  152. Purple Moose says:

Wow, Crosby cant even accept a simple pass at this point.

  153. J Walter Weatherman says:

He’s been the Pens worst defenseman tonight by a wide margin.

  154. Jandy says:

    And who takes his minutes?

  155. TJ says:

Maata should have stayed in the locker room after the 2nd period. Dumb penalty and turnovers galore.

  156. Milo Hamilton says:

This game has gotten progressively worse as it’s gone on.

  157. J Walter Weatherman says:

The most telling thing for me about Crosby is that he’s losing almost every puck battle in the corners. Doesn’t happen to normal Crosby.

  158. Jandy says:

Crosby has forgotten everything he knew. Sad.

  159. Milo Hamilton says:

Who cares, there’s only 10 of them left. You only need 4 defensemen.

  160. TJ says:

Ironically I am in the Boston area this week and all the fans hate Raask and are whining about the number of posts they have hit

  161. cobra39 says:

    Did he take a penalty?

  162. Jandy says:

    Sound familiar?

  163. Florida Steeler says:

Two excellent goalies–our guy is down a tier or two.

  164. TJ says:

I guess whistles stopped working half way through the 2nd period

  165. J Walter Weatherman says:

There are a lot of tight orifices on the Pens bench.

  166. TJ says:

Sorry was Niskanen. All playing dumb hockey

  167. Jandy says:

These odd man rushes are ridiculous.

  168. J Walter Weatherman says:

This game will be 3-1 before it is 2-2.

  169. TJ says:

Great game plan…. Let’s throw the puck across the front of the net and hope for the best

  170. Purple Moose says:

OMG. I have been saying all day that they were going to lose but I really didn’t believe it. Now I just cant believe they are going to do this to us again.

  171. Jandy says:

    Buckle up, Baby!

  172. Purple Moose says:

Ok, time to shorten the bench. Sit 27, 15 and 87.

  173. Gene-Zo says:

It’s going to be a bumpy off-season for some …

  174. Joe says:

Up 3-1 games and we choke

    What utter BS!

MAF, Bylsma, and you overpaid under performing “superstars”….

Get your head out of your lower body cavity!

Super Mario, please FIRE Bylsma, trade/cut MAF, and talk to your “protege” about not choking on a BIG ONE in the playoffs!

  175. cobra39 says:

    Lundquist is a brick wall.

  176. Jandy says:

    Hahaha you so funny!

  177. aaron says:

Can someone please explain why EVERY time Crosby carries the puck into the offensive zone he immediately goes as far wide as possible and then fires a pass 80 feet across the ice that is deflected or taken the other way?!?!

Why is no one taking the puck to the net?!?

  178. Purple Moose says:

Does he ever let in a weak goal

  179. OldSoldier21 says:

Buckle up? That’s like being safety conscious, huh? =) They need to take the training wheels off, and go to the front of the net. Run with scissors boys, run with scissors!

  180. Purple Moose says:

If I dont type this crap, I might kick the dog

  181. radio wave says:

    Tick, tick, tick.

  182. Jandy says:

Because he apparently forgot everything he knew about playing good hockey

  183. TJ says:

How the heck is there not a cross check penalty any where in that garbage. Ridiculous

  184. Jandy says:

    Type away!

  185. Milo Hamilton says:

Your wife wants you to take out the garbage.

  186. aaron says:

This is a disgusting, pathetic, all-too-familiar joke that is not at all funny.

  187. aaron says:

Maata checks his own teammate…..what a farce!

  188. Purple Moose says:

Why would you want a pp, that will just kill two more minutes

  189. cobra39 says:

    He’s a beast, no doubt.

  190. TJ says:

  196. J Walter Weatherman says:

  197. Jandy says:

    Just another epic choke

  198. Milo Hamilton says:

Congrats radio. Consider this my handshake.

  199. J Walter Weatherman says:

Honestly, it’s difficult for me to even get upset at this debacle of an organization. It’s just sad.

  200. Andrew says:

Hey, we will get change now, I am told that is good.

  201. Brandie says:

    FIRE BYLSMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  202. Jandy says:

With all due respect Old One, we had them down three games to one. This is unacceptable.

  203. Florida Steeler says:

    And, Shero.

  204. OldSoldier21 says:

Are you saying we are having a massive hallucination in western PA?

  205. Jandy says:

Congrats to radio and his Rangers. Good night all

  206. aaron says:

This is the most unlikable pens team I have seen in 20 years of watching Pens hockey. A bunch of over-hyped, overpaid prima donnas with an extreme lack of heart, effort, grit, and will to win. Go cash your checks and set your tee times boys…enjoy the country club because you don’t deserve anything else.

  207. Purple Moose says:

Congrats Rangers, what a gutsy effort with that crazy schedule which our team would have used as an excuse. As for the Penguins…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………!

  208. cobra39 says:

Well, it will be interesting to see what the organization looks like in October. See you then.

  209. radio wave says:

    Oh yes!

  210. Milo Hamilton says:

It has to start there. It can not be meaningful change without a change at the management level. Shero has mangled this and he must go. Now.

  211. Brandie says:

Maybe Sid gets his wish…..and Bylsma is history. I think integral parts of the team quit and that’s a shame, a damnable rancid rotten shame. I did not want the Pens to lose, but it happened. It is time to clean house!!!!

  212. Andrew says:

    Congrats radio.

  213. Ellie says:

Congrats, Rangers. Can’t hate on you like Philly or Boston. Hope you go all the way.

  214. AKC says:

You don’t put yourself in a position to give Lundqvist a chance to win it. Put it away in Game 5. No killer instinct. I live in Chicago and see Toews with game winner after game winner. He plays like a Captain in the playoffs. Crosby better see a shrink or something. Maybe a new coach who doesn’t let the players run the team will help. Who knows. Go Pirates, I guess.

  215. Brandie says:

Wish it were that easy Soldier Man.

  216. theplanisworking says:

Congrats to Radio Wave and the Rangers. They wanted this game. They knew the pens would gag it, and played accordingly. Next time anyone points to Fleury and says we can win with him, kindly point to Lvndqvist and show them a real goalie.

Rangers win a series for the first time ever against the Pens.

    Final —

    New York Rangers 2,
    Pittsburgh-San Jose Sharks-Penguins 1.

    Epic Fail.
Can’t wait for the excuses, and people calling everyone a Bylsma HATER!

    Good times.

  217. Purple Moose says:

Well said. Do we even have faith that the philosophy will change for next year?

  218. Arriba Wilver says:

What’s going on? My service went on the blitz. I suspect it was a mercy outage.

  219. theplanisworking says:

Knowing these losers, not a single change will occur, and the PR machine will be working overtime !!

  220. J Walter Weatherman says:

You only keep Shero if that gives you a better chance to get Trotz.

  221. twentytwo22 says:

When the score was 0-0 they were terrible.
When the score was 1-1 they were terrible.
    Everything else was window dressing.

  222. Purple Moose says:

Don’t worry those people will be watching “In the Room” for the 87th time and be laughing every time Mustache Boy is awarded.

  223. Brandie says:

It’s your world Radio. Congratulations to you and your Rangers. The better more prepared team won. Condolensces to Martin St. Louis. His teammates rallied around him and gave it everything they had. Wow!

  224. Purple Moose says:

I guess practice tomorrow will be optional again

  225. Rbilak says:

  226. J Walter Weatherman says:

    Has Bylsma been fired yet?

  227. Karen22 says:

Agree. They played the way the Penguins should have. Bye Dan! And a whole flock of others. That was NOT fun.

  228. OldSoldier21 says:

Jandy – I don’t like it much either, But the fact remains a fact. On a team with two of the best players in the history of the league (not just of their generation) – they only got to the cup finals twice. I am not sure what to do when your best player is a no show in big games. Bylsma will probably be fired, if that makes Sid happy and productive its a good move.

  229. cosmo says:

next year they should play for the 5-8 seed. Obviously they do not have any home ice advantage.

  230. J Walter Weatherman says:

Understand the frustration, but for once, you can’t pin this on Fleury. He’s not as good as Lundqvist, but not many goalies are. He was good enough to win the series if Crosby and Neal had bothered to show up.

  231. cosmo says:

How soon before the axe falls?

  232. Karen22 says:

  233. Ryan says:

Not on the fire Shero bandwagon yet. His hands were tied when the cap was lowered. The Scuderi signing looks terrible now, but at the time? Same with Letang. Hopefully we’ve seen the last of Disco Duck. Something I noticed in this game is how when the Rangers got the puck, they moved up the ice together. When the Pens got the puck the defenseman would stop, wait for the forwards to get 100 feet away, then throw a bad a pass up the ice.

  234. hockeymonster says:

So the difference in the game was an Ozone start for sid that went bad against the 4th line? And we got a seminar on PP play by the rangers?

  235. J Walter Weatherman says:

He won’t make it to his driveway tonight before he gets canned.

  236. Florida Steeler says:

Mario is a wuss–Bylsma should have been gone last year and Letang NEVER should have been given that big contract. And, his continued support for Fleury??
So, don’t count on anything with Mario. Remember, he is the one that wants a “players coach” that runs the puck up the ice. Sid doesn’t want discipline and neither does Mario.

  237. Karen22 says:

GO PIRATES! (Shouldn’t be playing hockey in 85 degree weather anyway. That’s my take and I’m sticking to it.).

  238. Ellie says:

I’m stationed in Chi-town right now, too, AKC, and I often think the same thing. Drives me up a tree. I think we’ve had enough of “The Greatest Player in the World.” You don’t get to call yourself that when you fail to come through more often than you succeed.

  239. Karen22 says:

It’s beyond words, really. Just stunning. And really, really sad!

  240. theplanisworking says:

    1975 all over again.

New York opponent, 3-1 lead (actually 3-0 in ’75) , uninspired play against an inferior opponent, and a great goalie shuts them down at home in game 7.

In 1975, the club declared bankruptcy.
In 2014, the team is bankrupt again, just not on the balance sheet.

  241. Jay says:

Post game interviews coming up on NHL network

  242. Arriba Wilver says:

“Can’t wait for the excuses, and people calling everyone a Bylsma HATER!”

I know I don’t “need” to respond to this . . . But, really? That’s your initial reaction?

  243. Karen22 says:

You KNEW that when they jumped out to a lead. Brick wall…game over.

  244. Purple Moose says:

Agree, thought he was good in these playoffs, far from great but good. It was definitely the offense, the power play and the superstars that lost this series

  245. theplanisworking says:

Not pinning the series on Fleury, but he came up short. He was but a piece of this wretched puzzle.

  246. Karen22 says:

I told my husband we should have pulled Fleury at the beginning of the 3rd…NO WAY was Lundy going to give up that lead. NO WAY!!

  247. Karen22 says:

    Thanks…won’t be watching.

  248. Florida Steeler says:

Letang?? He was awful last year and Shero gave him that big contract. What about Murray, Iginla, Goc.
    Shero needs to go.

  249. Rbilak says:

    David Bowie -Cha-Cha-Changes

    1. Bye Bye Dan, no amount of PowerPoint presentations will save you.

    2. Shero needs looked at also, scouts need looked at.

    3. Whatever needs to happen Scuderi cannot be part of next year. Simply cannot.

    4. No, I don’t blame MAF however, tonight we saw the difference between Elite and MAF. Up 3-1 in series, he cannot win a game again, sorry time for a change of scenery. Many changes need made, he is one of them.

    5. Letang, I don’t know if another team would take him but I would do everything possible to pack his bags. If his condition happens again it will not effect cap, so it is time to go.

    6. Geno with the Namath, didn’t happen

    7. Youth must be served.

    8. The softness must be priority number 1! Teach Mike Tyson to skate.

    9. James Neal bye bye. A complete joke.

  250. The Pens lost tonight and they won’t be the same team next year. And maybe it’s just as well.

  251. Milo Hamilton says:

    Guy Boucher’s scar is available.

  252. Bizrow says:

I was there in 75, listening to Mike Lange

    Big difference

They were the Islanders and the Pens were playing over their heads.

I think I might be leaving this blog

Not the loss, just the nonsense

  253. Poz says:

I put up one of my rare posts before the game started. Didn’t think I would come back. But I own up to my mistakes – a horrendous one in thinking the Pens had any semblence of heart.

I was certain the Pens would rise up and not lose three games at home in a series. Not against a team they dominated for three games. Certainly the “talent laden” Pens would finish off an exhausted Ranger team playing over its head.

Instead the Pens skated without energy, passion and desire – again – when it mattered the most.

No more will I defend Crosby. I’ve run out of excuses. He showed more agility pushing his stick in the groin of an opposing player than he did shooting the puck toward the goalie.

Bylsma is gone. But the millionaire players are the reason for the loss. Crosby, Malkin, Kunitz, Neal….to think there were times I applauded because it appeared they were simply trying. They should be ashamed, instead they head to vacation. Back next year to tease again.

In the end, the guy now in Montreal was right.

This team, head to toe, is soff.

  254. AKC says:

Totally agree Ellie. In the playoffs, Toews-Kane are the superstars you want, apparently. Maybe a new coach can help Crosby/Malkin. I don’t hate the Blackhawks, but watching them can be tough because it really makes you think “what if…”

  255. radio wave says:

Thanks for the good wishes. Honestly, i haven’t thought about Montreal or Boston. Love the Sox, hate the Bruins.

  256. Viv says:

Glad this happened – hopefully now there can be some changes made that should have been made last year.

  257. aaron says:

Well said! For those who think this type of sentiment is nonsense you just are not paying attention.

  258. Ellie says:

  259. Thundercrack says:

At the beginning of 1975 what were the expectations of that Penguins squad?

  260. Purple Moose says:

Time to watch some good hockey and teams with hearts

  261. Arriba Wilver says:

Considering the same thing, my friend.

  262. J Walter Weatherman says:

Crosby got Bylsma fired. There’s a lot packed into that little statement, but it is absolutely true.

  263. cobra39 says:

Forgot to thank the Rangers for eliminating the Flyers, for which the NHL should award a special trophy each year to the team that eliminates them.

  264. Ryan says:

I just don’t know who else I’d rather want. Look at some of the other bone-headed gms in the league. It’s easy to say fire Ray, it’s another thing to replace him.

I do believe all options should be looked at. If this team gets blown up, can’t say I’d be surprised.

  265. Sarah says:

    Astonishing presser.
Hilarious gaffe by <I think it was Grover) trying to ask if Dan was afraid of being fired, and he came up with something like "Dan if the inevitable happens….ER, um…." And Byslma smiles….while the question is awkwardly rephrased. Holy crap!!

And about one question later Bylsma gets up and walks out.
    Good lord.

  266. Lad 9 says:

Don’t go Biz. I have had the same thought, but still lots of good folks still here. These things run in cycles. Be glad you don’t read Twitter. I took a look tonight which I rarely do and wanted to yack. Ride it out.

Completely agree about the 75 series btw.

  267. Bizrow says:

++++, let me know where you go

  268. Bizrow says:

++++, let me know where you go, ditto to the AW post

  269. Lad 9 says:

Same to you AW. Don’t give into the dark side.

  270. Ellie says:

Concur as well. Fleury picked himself up big-time from last year. His flaws this year are the ones we’ve always known he has: poor rebound control, poor puck movement (especially out of the net), lets in the occasional soft goal. He had a role in this mess, but only *a* role, not *the* role.

  271. Sarah says:

    Tell that to Groat.

  272. J Walter Weatherman says:

Honest question: what is the last playoff series where Crosby played like the best hockey player in the world?

  273. Bizrow says:

I used to support that fellow, but you cannot always be a piss ant, barking spider, this is a tough loss, but you cannot always be piss##$ on people. And speaking nonsense. I’ll sleep on it, but would like someone to keep the list going

  274. chethejet1 says:

Crosby had to change the dynamic of the Pens becoming so soft. He was getting killed out there. Shero has to go as well. Pens need a complete change over as the dynasty crap is finally gone. Pens are no longer the darling of the NBC network and now comes the two most important issues, GM and coach. Both have to go.

  275. Purple Moose says:

Sad thing is that Bylsma will land on his feet and we have just wasted 5 years of what should have been glorious hockey and at least one cup during those years.

  276. Breakthestreak says:

Bylsma looked like he was already fired in that press conference. But how much money do the Owners eat if he is fired? 5-6 million?? Man, glad I don’t have to make that call!

  277. Bizrow says:

That fellow is the planisworking, Rodger, take a zambien and get rested up

  278. wvstarship says:

    1. Didn’t get rid of him last year when it was obvious they should; doubt that they will now. As long as the fans keep buying those season tickets, what do they care?
    2. Shero should have been fired last year at the same time DB was. Reason? He spent a boatload of the owner’s money on players but kept the one guy at head coach that would assure failure. He’s a worthless bum, like DB.
    3. Agreed; if he had any sense he’d retire. But there’s all that money….
    4. MAF is what he is. He wasn’t terrible like the last couple of years but he’s not a difference maker. Thing is, who’s going to replace him??
    5. It’s more than time to go. Frankly, I’ve never liked Letang and can’t for the life of me see what others see in him. Maybe it’s because he’s an ‘offensive defenseman’. Just give me someone who actually, you know, plays his position properly. Like Niskanen. Oh, wait, they’re going to let him walk aren’t they? Never mind.
    6. Sorry, don’t get that one :)
    7. Wrong. The Country Club must prevail. 66 and 87 say so!!
    8. Don’t forget Chuck Norris.
    9. Truer words never spoken.

  279. Bizrow says:

    I hoped

  280. J Walter Weatherman says:

If you think winning the cup should’ve been expected, what’s that say about a team that didn’t even make it to the Finals and only the ECF once (and was magnificently swept in that appearance) in the past 5 years?

  281. Sarah says:

Now Bucci tweeting about dissension vs Bylsma and arguments in mtgs….yikes.

  282. Sarah says:

So – where? Bylsma to Vancouver maybe?

That gaffe in the presser was so surreal…..just….surreal….

  283. theplanisworking says:

Biz, you do realize that the Islanders were just ‘born’ in 1973?
They were not the Islanders yet, that wouldn’t occur for a few more years.

  284. Thundercrack says:

    +1 Biz

  285. theplanisworking says:

Being that certain posters have repeated that meme, although it isn’t my first reaction, I feel confident that those words could definitely be said again………..

  286. Sarah says:

Anyway, if he really is fired (and I wont believe it til I see it) the guy will land on his feet.

Employed again very soon in the NHL I think. Dan will be OK.

  287. Sarah says:

Doesnt go against the cap. No worries.

He has sporadically in various series….actually he was superhuman at times v Philly 2 yrs ago.But never sustained, and in neither SCF was he that great, though he got the tougher matchups.
Which enabled Geno a good bit, and to his credit, he has consistently shown up with the exception IMO of the 2008 SCF where he seemed to lose much of his confidence after a gaffe v PHL.

But no, Sid has never been superhuman a whole playoffs, or maybe not even a whole series….? Dunno.

But the comparisons to Peyton Manning are gonna start up so fast they will leave skid marks……

  300. Bizrow says:

What is your point, other than to fight? I remember listening to those games in a trailer

Plan, I have sit silent watching and reading the blog, get your crap together, else you will make more people leave, ok, whatever year, you win on that one, I win on what I am saying to you

  301. Bizrow says:

We lost, pick up the broken shatter of our butts, remember the sun will shine tomorrow.

And lets see what happens, we have lots of time to lick our wounds

  302. Sarah says:

    Jon Buccigross.

  303. Sarah says:

Maybe not so much. We will see.
If he is fired, it was needed.
    For a long time IMO.

  304. Sarah says:

Here is the tweet, as always the source is anon, but they did look like a team that has tuned out the coach and I have thought that for a very long time….

Source: “lots of dissension in the locker room during the playoffs towards him (Blysma). Arguing in meetings, etc. 99.98% he’s gone”

  305. Rbilak says:

    Tonight’s 3 excuses

    1. No one on Pens lost a parent to make them play better

    2. We couldn’t get to our game, Neal, Geno, Letang, Sid all looked injured so they played that way

    3. Their goalie, like Rask, Rolston, Havlak before him, was simply unbeatable.

Lemieux has made tomorrow’s meeting with Dan optional. Only meaning if he shows up or not he is fired.

  306. DJ says:

Bennett has had his issues, particularly last game.

But even thinking Glass COULD be an upgrade tells you all you need to know.

  307. theplanisworking says:

Thanks for the kind words Biz. I am sorry I dared point out the fact the Islanders weren’t favored in that series…….. you won’t have to worry about that ever again. I wasn’t looking for any fight, but since you are convinced I am, have at it. I don’t want to be the reason you and your friends leave, so…….

Take my location off your list. I’m out.

I wish you a great night.

  308. DJ says:

    Thanks, Sarah.

Only thing to take issue with is the percentage. It’s 100%.

  309. Ellie says:

Bad feeling it would be guys like Niskanen, Sutter, Jokinen, maybe even Orpik … they guys who might not be “superstars” but play the right way. Guys I’d really want on my team.

  310. Daquido_Bazzini says:

A complete and total disgrace to lose to the Rangers after being up three games to one.
Everybody and anybody is to blame, and that includes Sidney Crosby.
He’s become the epitome of what other teams claim he is.
I don’t want to hear about him being the best player in the world again.
    It’s a joke….

  311. BillyBaduka says:

Man, those guys should go if they pout about the slightest discipline.

  312. Ellie says:

Oh, no, I was hypothesizing they weren’t on-board with the cater-to-the-stars and skip-the-practices country-club mentality. I don’t know anything, for sure, but those are guys who seem like heart-and-soul-of-the-team players.

(And enough with the hyphens … it’s late, and I’m sad.)

  313. Bizrow says:

Lighten up, Plan, seen that far too many times, heard it too long

Sorry if you are going thru tough times, please share “things that matter” here, but do not share nonsense anymore like this stuff

you won’t have to worry about that ever again. I wasn’t looking for any fight, but since you are convinced I am, have at it. I don’t want to be the reason you and your friends leave, so…….

I believe and personally, we all care about you, big time

Plan, the only one that can get your shi% together is you,

    Get it together, OK???

Tough night, this too shall pass

I worry about you, but in the overall scheme of things, things are up to you

  314. Sarah says:

I dunno guys…..I have a tough time blaming Crosby.
He’s shown for years he’s incredibly driven….to a crazy degree. He’s dedicated to improving in every facet of the game.
He’s the Anti-Ovie, and TG for that.

    We should be proud he’s a Pen….

I still wonder if he is injured.

But maybe if the locker room dynamic was turning so bad and the team was really to the point where it had tuned out the coach, he just showed he is human and could no longer muster the incredible level of passion he usually has.

(That doesn’t even TOUCH on how soft they are and how much physical abuse he has to swallow night in and night out…..)

    I dunno.

I am not willing to call Sid a quitter or a pansy or anything (which is not the same as defending his level of play- which had to be FAR better for all but about 2 games when he reminded us who he is, however briefly…)

I just sense things were so bad in that room between coach and team he got so sick of dealing with it and could not perform to his normal level….

    Again dunno.

Not gonna call Sid bad names. Only human.

  315. Sarah says:

And practice tomorrow is officially cancelled!
    For real!

  316. BillyBaduka says:

Excuse me Elli, I ears responding to Rbilak on Letang and Neal possibly wanting out.

  317. J Walter Weatherman says:

    This is the correct answer.

  318. Milo Hamilton says:

    Golf is optional.

  319. Arriba Wilver says:

Thanks, Lad, but I don’t really understand the reference to giving into the dark side. And my reasons may be different than Biz’s. But Biz taking a stand is HUGE to me.

  320. Bizrow says:

The thing is, do you let the dark side win?

I don’t think there is a dark side, just sometimes one tries too hard, you try too hard, usually failure.

We have lost so many good people from here

Thats why I fired back at Plan tonight

  321. DJ says:

    Henrik Lundqvist.

Not too shabby for a 7th Round pick.

  322. LGRNYR says:

As a ranger fan, I usually come on to other teams blogs after games just to see the perspective from the other side of the ice and I have to say…This is by far the most level headed, unbiased group of fans I’ve found on any blog. That being said…I didn’t read any of the comments on the 3 posts about Staal…How the cross-check to the head wasn’t a penalty, I’ll never know. I will certainly be back next season when the rangers face off with the pens again.

  323. Sarah says:

Well I read DKs column and I’m a little confused…..
Mario and Burkle are Seething at the treatment of Sid and their stars?

These were the guys that watched as the very types of players that would have protected their stars, that would have made the team “sandpaper” or “hard to play against” were steadily removed …..from Talbot to Rupp to Asham, to exhibit A Matt Cooke, who’s the only guy I can think of in immediate history that might make the likes of Dubinsky or Staal physically afraid, without seriously degrading the line-up, and by that I mean Glass or Engo….

If we are reduced to saying THOSE two guys might make us tough enough that Sid and Geno could play without concern, then I dunno what to say.

But Dubinsky and Staal should have been turned into hamburger the next shift on the ice, the first time they touched Sid, and Glass or no Glass, this team has not been prepared to do that for a LONG time. A long time.

And NOW Mario/Burkle are seething? I’m betting Sid has been seething awhile longer.

The Pens need to decide what league they are playing in: the NHL they wish existed, or the one that does.

  324. Sarah says:

This from an email from a pal, from another blog….and amusing sendup of the supposed conversation between Sid and Mario two nights ago.
    Says it all.

“My sister is tougher than anyone currently on this roster. I’ve been cheapshotted, concussed, had my neck broke, and have had to deal with plugs pulverizing me for years now. Your medical staff nearly caused my career to end. You refuse to have anyone on this team that will take care of these cheapshots for me, and I’ve also been playing with over the hill has-beens or AHL scrubs for 6 years. When the season ends tomorrow, please trade me.”

  325. DJ says:

We don’t need aging tough guys.

    Give me three Dubinskys.

  326. Lad 9 says:

I originally took the both of you wanting to leave as more of a comment on the general tenor of this space of late, not person specific, so I read that wrong. I have always viewed this blog as a place where you could get intelligent discourse and, agree or disagree, you (mostly) left it on friendly terms. In my view, that has changed. Too many times now there is a mean-spiritedness to the discussion. Hence the dark side reference.

But I also think that will run it’s course and I would hate to see either of you – or Plan for that matter – leave. You all contribute too much good stuff and it would be a poorer place without all of you. Just my two cents.

  327. Ellie says:

  328. Karen22 says:

Can’t wait to see what happens in the morning. ‘Night all!

  329. I have to say that I am mostly relieved to see the Pens lose tonight because they most certainly would have been humiliated by either Boston or Montreal in the next round, Shero has managed to make decision after bad decision and that has brought us to this moment.
Letting Max Talbot leave, not renewing contacts of numerous players like Scuderi when he could still play. Not signing Niskanen for less money and a longer term when he had the chance. Signing Letang to a longer term contract a year sooner than he had to. Let’s figure out a way to rid them selves of that contract. Keeping a goalie who is dead average at best and chokes consistently in big games.
Last but not least keeping a coach who is known around the league as arrogant for continuing to employ a system that is devoid of defensive intelligence. Not just keeping him but re-upping him for 2 more years after last years debacle. Not letting a very good young D-man like Despres develop while watching Letang cough up the puck consistently with bad defensive and offensive reads.
Last but not least watching the supposed best players in the world consistently make poor decisions with the puck in the offensive zone that leads to a minimum of 6 2 on 1’s or 3 on 1’s per game against their own team and not being held accountable in any way, shape or form for these selfish plays.
Let the ownership group make the changes necessary. Fire Shero and Bylsma. Get rid of Letang and either Crosby or Malkin. Trade Neal. Build the team from the defence out. Get a goalie. Develop that good young defence corps. Bring in some younger character.

  330. HeyBullDog says:

This from a man who abhores violence in hockey? Interesting. That’s what you are calling for, no? An eye for an eye? Or once again am I reading you wrong? Or do I have to cite a column, twit or facebook you wrote in October of 2011 that absolutely makes me an illiterate fool for misunderstanding the “great column” your “lunatics” rave about. You’re a very confusing journalist.

  331. You’ve heard of clean hits, right? Wearing down an opponent? Playing him tough? Getting in his face between whistles?

    Don’t play dumb.

  332. HeyBullDog says:

Live for them. Live for the great sport of hockey. But that’s not what you are saying. You are calling for blood. And that’s also a part of hockey. That’s also what separates it from other sports. Better or worse, you need a guy to crack skulls or at least put the fear of cracking skulls in your line up. Agreed?

  333. Jandy says:

I believe Crosby gave up. I also believe Bylsma sealed his own fate.

  334. DJ says:

Knew exactly what you meant in your column, DK.

Also knew you would get a few of these. Or more.

  335. Jandy says:

He’s gone. I’m sure of it.

  336. Jandy says:

  337. Jandy says:

“And NOW Mario/Burkle are seething? I’m betting Sid has been seething awhile longer.”

*THIS* says everything about Sid’s play in these playoffs.

*THIS* is why Sid played the way he played.

This says it in a nutshell.

  338. Jandy says:

    Gotta love drive-by tw*ts

  339. DJ says:

Can’t have a nuanced dialogue on a blog. Everything is always painted white or black although our lives are lived in the gray.

  340. DJ says:

    Thought so as well.

Madden speculated yesterday this was the reason as well.

  341. Jandy says:

    Sid played horribly last night.

  342. Sarah says:

I speculated that weeks ago and Groat had a conniption.

  343. Jandy says:

I feel Sid had enough. I also feel he showed that on the ice. I made it a point to watch him last night. The things he was doing, the whiffs, he looked like he was going thru the motions with no intentions of helping. Color me nuts. But, I don’t blame him.

  344. Arriba Wilver says:

If I recall correctly, you speculated it was because he was disgusted with Bylsma, which is what Groat was responding to.

  345. Arriba Wilver says:

I get myself in trouble trying to have nuanced dialogues all the time. ;-)

  346. Jandy says:

I’m thinking Sarah was right too, and Sid (as well as other players) are dissatisfied with DB.
It can be more than one thing, right?

  347. Arriba Wilver says:

You missed my nuanced comment , .Jandy. Wouldn’t have even said a word if the comment about Groat wouldn’t have been mentioned. And I think my comment was accurate.

Are we keeping score now on who’s “right?”

  348. Jandy says:

    I don’t keep score, AW.
But I’ll bow out of this one, ok, friend?

  349. Jandy says:

be careful, AW, you’ll catch your hair on fire with all that nuance stuff ;)
