  4. Bizrow says:

    Thanks, crap, no Marte again.

NH is in a pickle here, if he puts Marte on the DL, probably can’t defend who he will call up instead of the unmentionable one ;-)

    Just sayin

  5. bpn8pitt says:

No Marte. No Sanchez. Two RFs. Cutch with a bad wheel. Health an issue with this team right now.

They desperately need a starter to give them 7 plus. Just don’t see it happening with these two bandbox stadiums.

  6. Andrew says:

No Gomez, he dropped his appeal, begins serving his suspension tonight.

  7. Bizrow says:

    And Wandy starts tomorrow………

  8. Bizrow says:

    Three games, right?

  9. Andrew says:

    Yes, so tomorrow too.

  10. Patrick says:

Can we have just one cotton picking win at Miller Park this season? I fail to see what is so tough about winning there for this team. For pete’s sake, even the dreadful D-Backs won 2 of 3 there just last week. Just give me one win at Miller Park!

  11. cmat0829 says:

I don’t think NH is delaying Marte to DL based on the Polanco ‘issue’. I do think they really want to see if a few days rest can get him back in the lineup… I would think Friday night’s game is the deadline… if Marte is a go for Yankee Stadium, then so be it. If not, they will put him on the DL retro to Sunday. The other bonus of the Yankee series is that Marte could be the DH all 3 games if need be to hasten the return to the lineup (though I think swinging the bat is probably the toughest thing for him to do with the injury)

I still think NH will be stubborn and it wouldn’t be Polanco if Marte were DL’d… though it is harder to justify.

  12. toochca says:

Just saw this “Brewers centerfielder Carlos Gomez, who left the game Tuesday night against Pittsburgh with lower back tightness, is not in the starting lineup Wednesday and it’s not because his suspension appeal has been decided.

  13. cmat0829 says:

Offense has to show up… the Bucs have lost a lot of lowscoring type games there …you can’t expect to win much if you don’t score more than like 2 runs….

This season at Miller Park, Pirates 0-4. Pirates have scored grand total of SEVEN runs. S-E-V-E-N in an offensive ballpark.

  14. cmat0829 says:

    bonus.

  15. cmat0829 says:

maybe there is a downside to swinging so hard you fall over backwards.

  16. cmat0829 says:

lol, if Pirates score more than 2 runs tonight, will be first time in 5 games this season in Miller Park they have done so. And yes, put me down for wins tonight and tomorrow (most improbably) and keeping the series winning streak alive into NYC.

  17. toochca says:

If you don’t do that, chances are you won’t have to “dodge” the next pitch!!

  18. Bizrow says:

It would be real tough to defend not bringing him up if Marte went to the DL. Thats kinda what I was trying to say. I think I read they would not let him swing yesterday.

Then I’m thinking, ok bring GP up then send him down to keep the super 2 thing, but then if he’s hitting 500, now there would be pitchforks on Federal Street ;-)

  19. Bizrow says:

Well, we need it. made some progress towards 500 in the last home stand, but we are pretty stinky on the road so far, 4-12?

  20. Andrew says:

This is from the Brewers, anyway he is out of lineup it may be opportune for him but also good for the Pirates.

    Milwaukee Brewers @Brewers · 28m
Carlos Gomez has dropped his appeal and will serve his 3-game suspension starting tonight. He was suspended for the incident on 4/20 at Pit.

  21. bpn8pitt says:

It was Alex Dickerson for Jaff, right?

In hindsight, I don’t really understand that transaction. Considering all the RFs Snider, Tabata, maybe Lambo and once and awhile JHey and soon to be Polanco.

Not saying that Dickerson was this great prospect. And they had no idea Polanco was going to blowup like this…But just doesn’t make sense to me now.

Another arm would have been nice instead.

  22. toochca says:

Thanks Andrew! Either way he is not playing!

  23. piratemike says:

There is no mystery. The Pirates have too many problems to be competitive this year.
I can understand Huntington having too much faith in the players being brought back this year but he has gotten a big dose of reality this time around and either they will have to make some major changes or just go back to being the “same ole Pirates”.

  24. bpn8pitt says:

…And on a related note to Polanco and RF. I wonder what happens to Tabata once he does arrive.

I think Wilver said it awhile back, do they pick up some salary to move him?

I don’t want to start “Nuttings cheap” debate. Just don’t see them paying a 4th OF that much. Imagine if Polanco had signed a deal?

    Sorry, just thinking out loud.

  25. JohninOshkosh says:

All the Bucs have to do is win tonight and they play for the series win tomorrow.

The beauty of baseball, ladies and gentlemen.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Milwaukee Brewers, 8:10 P.M. ET
    Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup

    RF: Travis Snider
    2B: Neil Walker
    CF: Andrew McCutchen
    3B: Pedro Alvarez
    LF: Jose Tabata
    1B: Ike Davis
    SS: Jordy Mercer
    C: Chris Stewart
    SP: Francisco Liriano

    Milwaukee Brewers Lineup

    CF: Elian Herrera
    2B: Rickie Weeks
    RF: Ryan Braun
    C: Jonathan Lucroy
    1B: Mark Reynolds
    LF: Khris Davis
    SS: Jean Segura
    3B: Jeff Bianchi
    SP: Wily Peralta

  26. JohninOshkosh says:

Ooops, Cmat. Did not notice you posted lineup.

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

Grilli says he’s ready to return. I don’t know it that’s to the mound or his book tour.

  28. Jandy says:

    lol

  29. cmat0829 says:

I highly doubt that finances, especially guaranteed $s to Tabata, will have any bearing on the bench of the Pirates, this season or any other…. the Pirates COULD decide to keep Snider AND Tabata if they jettison Harrison, but I do think one or the other will be sent packing. Given Polanco is a lefty and Tabata is probably slightly better in left field as a backup to Marte than Snider, I think Tabata will be kept and Snider DFA’d.

And I know I’m probably Bonifacio’s biggest fan around here, but if Neal had signed him (or someone like him), we could dump Barmes and Harrison, and keep both Tabata and Snider who both are better pinch hitting options than Barmes and Harrison are. Far from the biggest issue on this team but if and when we get back into competition, the bench makeup has to be addressed. Already having to carry the backup C who is of little use off the bench, carrying Barmes as Jordy insurance is not something we can afford… as we are then down to only 3 useable pinch-hitting slots.

  30. cmat0829 says:

Interesting…pretty sure CH is set on a rehab stint… is Grilli bypassing that in declaring he is ready to go? Seriously, if Grilli is ready, it would be a big boost to the bullpen, assuming he is healthy and can pitch like he did last year (or at least close to that)….love Melancon and Watson but love them better in the 8th and 7th… allows Morris / Wilson to be used mix and match and to get a key out in the 6th…..

  31. The Gunner says:

    Book tour is the answer

  32. 23 DAYS UNTIL GREGORY POLANCO IS “READY” TO FACE MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHING IN A BUCCO UNIFORM

    {because NOW is not nearly as important as 6 seasons from NOW!}

Although, seriously, I would be so ticked if they brought him up now, just 3 weeks away from BMTIB financial Promised Land. They made us wait———now save your dang crap money!!!

  33. Arriba Wilver says:

I think he’s working on turning water into wine.

  34. cmat0829 says:

Just reported on ROOT that (1) Gomez was indeed out of the lineup tonight due to INJURY and (2) he subsequently dropped his appeal and will begin the 3-game suspension tonight…. how convenient…. not sure that should be allowed, but that’s what is gonna happen.

  35. bpn8pitt says:

Thanks for giving me a different perspective.

Again, a lot of my comments were hindsight 20/20….While I understand locking up Tabata a few years ago is one of those “share the risk” things, its going to be difficult for me to watch Tabata ride pine, while Vance Worley gets hit on in June. Possibly….The money they gave Tabata, trading a fringe prospect like Dickerson, for a likely DFA in Decker. To me its not using your assets wisely. But again, its in hindsight.

  36. Clint wants to see if Grilli can toss heat 2 nights in a row.

Grilli knows he only has so many pitches left in that right wing. He knew that from Spring Training. Interesting call.

  37. Milo Hamilton says:

Not exactly fair to Russell Martin.

  38. pattonbb says:

Good stuff from you on DK’S show, Milo.

  39. Milo Hamilton says:

Long time listener, first time caller.

  40. bpn8pitt says:

I guess what I’m saying is, I wish we still had the 12 million or whatever owed to Tabata and Dickerson et al, to improve this team in other areas.

With Ike Davis at first, what they are paying him, and what they gave up. Gaby. Where does that leave Lambo?

I’m gonna shut up. I’m second guessing too much.

  41. JohninOshkosh says:

One thing I’ll give the Budster, along with my fellow taxpayers of Wisconsin, is that they built a stadium with a roof.

Always guaranteed to have the game.

  42. Milo Hamilton says:

How long of a trip is it for you ?

  43. JohninOshkosh says:

I can go door to gate in ninety minutes, if favorable traffic.

I’m closer to Lambeau which I can get to in just under an hour.

  44. cmat0829 says:

I get the overall point but given that (1) it is very very clear they have resources they could spend this season to help the team, then (2) the Tabata contract is not stopping them from signing anyone they feel they can get to help the team…. and $s for minor leaguers like Decker are pretty much minimal. So on that specific point, Tabata is not something anyone should worry about…and he is very serviceable as a bench OF, at least to my eyes.

As to Davis, he pretty much is indicative of the 1B help that was out there… Loney hits for better average but no power…. Smoak stats are pretty close to what Davis has… I haven’t followed Moreland so don’t know what he is doing….. if we wanted Lambo to get the shot, then I can get behind that… I’m pretty much indifferent to the Davis trade… I do think he has potential to be decent over there, but I’d also have been ok giving Gaby the extended look with Lambo getting the eventual shot.

ALL OF THIS SAID, kinda hard at this point to get past the underperforming pitching staff, and then past the leaky defense…. then past the streaky offense that can’t adjust to offspeed pitches…. if we can fix those things, then I have a healthy appetite to debate Volquez vs. Cumpton, Tabata vs. Snider vs. Harrison, Tony S vs. Chris S., etc.

  45. cmat0829 says:

Boy has Ike been disappointing on defense at 1B….is that his profile or is he just pissing on his leg since he has been with the Buccos? Does he need A-D-D medication like LaRoche to help him focus???

  46. Thundercrack says:

Why does Ike Davis feel he needs to make that stupid throw?!

  47. cmat0829 says:

Pedro pulls pitch way outside and low and weak ground ball to 2b. Yawn.

  48. cmat0829 says:

i suppose to try to make up for the stupidity to field the grounder to 2B in the first place.

  49. cmat0829 says:

the ONE thing I will say about Ike is since he didn’t come up thru the Pirates system, he has no issue with going the other way on outside pitches….. now, if he can work on his patience with RISP…. and occasionally hit for power, we will have our Adam LaRoche.

  50. The Gunner says:

Yep, it was an asinine effort. At least it didn’t open the floodgates. Davis just got a nice hit, let’s see if the Bucs can be 1 for 1 w/RISP

  51. The Gunner says:

    0 for 1 w/RISP thus far

  52. cmat0829 says:

RESULTS notwithstanding, Davis, Tabata and Mercer approach vs. Peralta WAY WAY better than Cutch, Pedro, Walker and Snider… will that change second time thru?

  53. I miss that “mb” Brewer logo that looked like a ball glove. Much better.

  54. cmat0829 says:

Khris Davis (3 swing and miss on changeups out of the zone) auditions to join the Pirates at some point…sign him Neal! he’d fit right in!!!!

Seriously, very encouraged to see some swing and miss return for Frankie…..

  55. Lad 9 says:

    Thanks Biz!

  56. cmat0829 says:

Chris Stewart looks like a pitcher when he hits… yikes.

  57. cmat0829 says:

Interesting to note that CH says he isn’t sure of next step for Grilli… he has to talk to NH and Searage… pretty sure NH always wants rehab stints…pretty sure Grilli does not want any part of one….. I think CH can have the final vote, but does he really want to trust Grilli in the 9th next save situation sight unseen? If I’m making the decision he closes for Indy at least one game.

  58. Arriba Wilver says:

At the risk of jinxing him, hasn’t Liriano looked better tonight so far?

  59. Arriba Wilver says:

    Bite your tongue.

  60. cmat0829 says:

yes effective change up lots of swing and miss.

  61. cmat0829 says:

    my tongue is thoroughly bitten

  62. Lad 9 says:

That is a shot at pitchers like Cole and Travis Wood. :)

  63. I like Christ Stewart as a receiver . . . . very quiet back there. Better receiver than Sanchez.

  64. Lad 9 says:

No question. He looks like last years version.

  65. Arriba Wilver says:

    Agreed.

  66. Arriba Wilver says:

That’s what I thought. Much smoother and more confident.

  67. Milo Hamilton says:

Steve Kerr has taken the Golden State job. Hmm.

  68. Arriba Wilver says:

    At least till June. ;-)

  69. JD says:

Hey OshKosh, loved your comment on the earlier thread. “Welcome to the real world, hippies.” Hilarious. Good stuff as always. You even worked in a Full House reference.

    Nicely done!

  70. TJ says:

Last 2 series the pens have lost… Sweep vs Boston and last 3 vs rangers they combined for 5 goals over 7 games. How is that possible?

  71. Pedro gets a base hit on a terrible swing because there is a runner on 1st Base.
Tabata get a force out at 2nd instead of a base hit on a good swing because there is a runner on 1st base.

    The nuances of baseball.

  72. Arriba Wilver says:

And Mercer followed with a terrible at bat.

  73. TJ says:

And why is Bylsma still employed? Maybe he can take the Knicks job. Funny thing is that Bylsma will be employed again by the end of the month. Some team will look at his regular season record and snap him up. But look at his playoff record and Olympic performance and it’s not so special.

  74. Who would you rather coach? Carmelo or Stef Curry?

  75. Thomas Jefferson,

    Wrong thread.

The vampires are on the morning thread.

  76. Hit em where they ain’t.

  77. TJ says:

I was in Boston this morning. I am late to the party. Should hear them whining about all the posts they hit in their series vs. Montreal. They seem to forget all the ones the Pens hit last year.

  78. TJ says:

Sunny California or press hound NY?

  79. JohninOshkosh says:

    Thanks, JD!

I’d like to take credit for it, but it’s a Homer Simpson line.

  80. TJ says:

This just in…. Major acquisition… Oprah has acquired the rights to…. Michael Sam documentary.

  81. JohninOshkosh says:

He was great as a commentator. Interesting.

  82. JohninOshkosh says:

Will a Canadian team choke in the third period at Boston in Game 7 for a second straight year ?

  83. Where is Cracker and his complaints when you need him?

  84. JohninOshkosh says:

Will she be playing the role of the boyfriend ?

  85. I hate Tim Neveritt . . . . . he never talks about the ongoing game and he thinks he gets paid by the word!!

Last night on the radio he called Gaby Sanchez’ double a home run before Bob Walk pointed out it was off the wall and never got high enough to get out.

  86. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Howdy all,

Just getting in to see the run scored by Cutch.

Need Frankie to turn in a good outing. It’s time for him to turn it around.

Seriously can’t complain about Ile Davis batting .260ish. Stay there all season and I’ll be happy with that.

IMO, there’s no doubt who gets dropped when GP comes up, Travis Snider. Jose Tabata is a true #4 OFer. He can play all 3 OF positions and he’s decent with the bat. Not a starter, but good enough to give someone a break. Sniders just not good at any position.

Jordy has been on fire over the last few games. If he can bat around .260 as well for the season I’d be happy, especially with his first full-time season as a starter.

  87. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Not a fan either….

  88. JD says:

    + 1000 for quoting Homer!

  89. JD says:

    No, she’s playing him

  90. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Liriano knows exactly what he gets paid for. Sure ain’t running the bases, don’t blame him.

If he hits a gapper, he still gets a single

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

Well, she always has been considered a tweener.

  92. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Course, it would be nice if Ike brought his glove with him

  93. Milo Hamilton says:

    They are such a mess.

  94. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Bob Walk is right though, Davis knocked that ball down, got the error but, Frankie gave up on the play

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

    Liriano is hurt.

  96. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Ah oh……can’t afford another injury to a starting pitcher.

  97. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I think Jordy got him there…..

  98. Milo Hamilton says:

They can go back to the dugout & pretend everything is OK but he’s been shaking that left leg & trying to stretch it out since he was on base. Hasn’t been healthy all season.

  99. JohninOshkosh says:

There is bad juju in that building….

Linda Blair throwing up pea soup kind of juju…

  100. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Must’ve been when sprinted to first

  101. Arriba Wilver says:

I think Mario and Ron called him in as a consultant.

  102. Arriba Wilver says:

    Me three.

  103. Gene-Zo says:

    nope. 3-1 Habs 2:01 left 3rd pd.

  104. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s never gone away since spring.

  105. Arriba Wilver says:

Think so, too. They must have decided there wasn’t clear and convincing evidence to overturn.

  106. JohninOshkosh says:

At least the world will get to see the Canadian Rosemary Clooney and that bizarre torch lighting ceremony in Montreal a few more times.

    Habs win.

  107. Milo Hamilton says:

    Michel Therrien. Irony.

  108. cmat0829 says:

and liriano and volquez and wandy and every pitcher in the game.

  109. cmat0829 says:

Is this Davis’ typical D? If so, yuck. If not, what gives?? Can’t fault Frankie on that really, it was a simple play for a 1B to make. Simple.

  110. cmat0829 says:

I always knew Steve Kerr was highly intelligent…it’s a nobrainer… talent-laden team coming off 50 win season with a rabid, but realistic and patient, fanbase… with solid ownership…. or selfish team over the cap in fishbowl city, all credit will go to Phil and all blame to Kerr??? No brainer. How many days til Jackson anoints himself coach?

  111. Rangers, according to Dejan a mediocre hockey team, have a good chance to go to the Cup Finals with that dude in the cage.

  112. cmat0829 says:

Interesting… 3rd time up facing Liriano, Brewers 3 and 4 hitters deliberately just slapping at the ball to right field (opposite field), trying to get something going late in a tie game….. is there ANY chance Cutch and Pedro EVER DO THAT? I’ll hang up and listen for the answer.

  113. J Walter Weatherman says:

The way this year is going for Bylsma, there will be a Therrien – Boudreau finals coaching matchup. They may need to do a well-being check for him, if this happens.

  114. JohninOshkosh says:

There aint no such thing as a cream puff in the SC playoffs.

You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a playoff team with two really good players and a decent goaltender.

That’s why any visit to the finals should be cherished!

    It aint no picnic.

  115. cmat0829 says:

Sucks. Hate the Neverett/Walk combo. I can make it through Wehner and Neverett, only because I like listening to Rock…. “goodness Gracious” I do….. but Neverett makes one pine for Greg Brown…..

Serious idea for Root Sports…since fans of the team tend to get our fill of our own announcers (and I’m sure vice versa), why not an ‘announcer swap’ few innings on one game of each series? Say the 4th-6th innings in the middle game of the series, we send our analyst to their broadcast and they send theirs to ours. Would be a good perspective on the other team and how others see our team….

  116. The Gunner says:

Timmy probably works cheap & the BMTIB likes that

  117. Don’t believe in bad juju.

Do believe that bad defense and swinging for fences leads to lots of losses.

    [Nice catch by Braun!]

  118. cmat0829 says:

Another game in an ideal hitters park and our Buccos have managed one run. 4 and 2/3 games in 2014 in Miller Park, grand total of 8 Pirates runs.

  119. The Gunner says:

Get the rosary beads out. Let’s hope the bullpen can hold off the Brew Crew.

PS – A lousy start by Morris

  120. Bizrow says:

Very quiet here tonight, if my rant last night drove folks away, I apologize, only 120 some posts

But the blog will survive, it/we always do

Morris in a pickle right now

  121. cmat0829 says:

Fun fact… Steve Kerr’s contract with the Warriors was negotiated by Mike Tannenbaum, former GM of the NY Jets. No confirmation that the prolonged negotiations were due to Tannebaum trying to get the Warriors to sign Mark Sanchez to absolutely any role, any role at all……

Put me down for Mark Jackson as new coach of the Knicks, with no shock on my part if Phil Jackson assumed the reigns, though I think he prefers a sacrificial lamb first while they rebuild the roster, then to take over for a playoff run in a year or so.

  122. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I don’t think there was either , but looked like he might’ve gotten the elbow/tricep area.

  123. bpn8pitt says:

Osh, I think Brewers can take this division.

What is their situation payroll/prospect wise? Any help on the way? $$$ room to add?

  124. cmat0829 says:

saw Clint take out the old pen and notebook after Morris walked the leadoff hitter on FOUR straight pitches…. glad he is logging all of this mess, but time for some accountability.

  125. JohninOshkosh says:

    Oremus:

In nomine Patris et fillii et Spiritus Sancti…

  126. The Gunner says:

Morris got thru it, Biz. Now the offense needs to
    put up a crooked #!!

  127. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Pitcher needs to get over there. Ike knocked it down, looked to flip but nobody there.

Yea he should’ve gloved it though

  128. Bizrow says:

    Pickle alert over

  129. Bizrow says:

    ++++++++

  130. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Um, like what?

He reached 98mph on the fastball and got out of the inning with no damage.

  131. cmat0829 says:

I know that was for Osh…. I saw reports earlier this Spring that the payroll this year is at a record high and I think I also saw the GM quoted that there wasn’t a ton of money left to pursue impact 1B options, etc. That said, the ownership has said repeatedly they will stretch when they have a chance… that’s for payroll…

I don’t think their prospect cupboard has much in it.

  132. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’ll have to go back and take a look at it. Hope it was a good one

  133. Bizrow says:

Cool beans, Marte back into game action, crap, still struck out

  134. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Fire the GM and cheap ass owner

  135. cmat0829 says:

for not being ready to attack hitter 1 and walking him on 4 straight… the focus and approach for this team has been off all season, and the end does not justify the means….. relievers need to be ready to attack and he wasn’t.

Glad he got thru it and I’m a Morris fan, but this team needs to get it together.

  136. bpn8pitt says:

    Lucroy is a good ballplayer.

  137. The Gunner says:

    Ite, missa est

  138. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

This Smith is sick. Off speed stuff falls off the table, why he threw anything other than that to NW is beyond me, but glad he did

  139. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Interesting.

  140. cmat0829 says:

I got it, but Liriano needs to nurse that groin and I’ll give him a pass on not sprinting to 1B on a very very routineg grounder… that was not a ball to “knock down”…

  141. Where are all those self-designated experts who insisted that Walker should quit batting righthanded?!

  142. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Hit the replay button….

  143. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    In bed

  144. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Did the Brewers really have a shift on Cutch there?

    Thank you

  145. cmat0829 says:

PEDRO has a chance… I’ll call it…if he goes the other way, he gets a hit and RBI… if he tries to pull, we know what happens …

  146. The Gunner says:

A wild pitch would work here

  147. bpn8pitt says:

    On Fangraphs webpage…

  148. Bizrow says:

    Strangely silent right now.

NH cringes though with every dinger and RH click, he is now hitting over 400 RH, I think

  149. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Perhaps Pedro should’ve tried from the right side, could it really have been worse?

  150. Bizrow says:

Pedro, I’m still glad he is a Bucco

    But, sigh……

  151. JohninOshkosh says:

    Oh, they are legit.

If you believe the prospect guides and Travis over at the Bucco Blog, they don’t have a lot to tap into from the farm. But they keep coming up with guys who get to Milwaukee and do OK. Davis, Scooter, even Herrera.

They are thin at pitching in the system. If only a few arms blow out, they will be scrambling a bit. Their owner will spend more, I think. Despite what you see in the stands, they are expected to do well attendance wise this year. An aggressive GM. Has traded for Sabathia and Greinke. Is not afraid to give up prospects. Just not sure how much they have to give up.

Braun, Lucroy, Gomez and Segura are pretty solid. Braun will be battling chronic type ills all year, though.

  152. cmat0829 says:

Good God… I just have to ask Pedro… in your mind, just WHAT did you think you were going to do with that pitch? Pulling off a good curve ball that never was a strike is not a good late-game 2-out formula. I know the pitcher is good… I know it’s hard to hit those types of pitches…. but that approach I know for damn sure has no chance.

  153. No chance——rusty gate!

  154. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Not against that guy. He had NO idea what the pitch was or where it was going.

  155. I am SO relieved to see Marte patrolling left field.

  156. cmat0829 says:

Hate to be overly critical, but I knew what pitch and where it was gonna be…pretty obvious it was gonna be curve ball, down and out of the zone. he was better off just flicking his bat one handed in that general vicinity.

  157. bpn8pitt says:

cmats right. If Pedro doesn’t learn to take the single the other way? He’ll be a one trick pony. HR or double. K or hit into the shift.

  158. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Pedro’s biggest problem, IMO, is pitch recognition–he has none

  159. Milo Hamilton says:

In those types of situations, against a late inning lefty, if the count goes to 0 and 1 Pedro is toast.

  160. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Didn’t he do that earlier tonight?

  161. cmat0829 says:

SIGH. SIGH. SIGH. leadoff walk with Braun and Lucroy coming. SIGH.

  162. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Yup

  163. Andrew says:

So that is why you walk the leadoff hitter.

  164. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

But he got a ground ball DP. Whipped out the walk, but I hope CH holds him accountable on this 1st batter walk mess

  165. cmat0829 says:

not sure, but when he NEEDS to do it, is late in a tie game with 2 outs and a runner on 3rd. I need him to get a bit smarter with approach and game situations.

  166. bpn8pitt says:

Provided they stay healthy, I like their chances.

I heard on the way back from the gym, they asked Weekes to play OF and he said no. Maybe he’s moved later?

Everyone severely underrated this team in the Spring.

  167. cmat0829 says:

never has. it’s a shame because he seems like a smart guy, works hard, takes it seriously… which is why I just want to know what is in his mind in these situations…. he HAS to know what’s coming.

  168. Bizrow says:

No discipline, he swings at most anything, and the pitcher knows, no strikes

  169. radio wave says:

All night this has felt like a game they can win. But they always find a way not to when it.

  170. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

You need him too? Better tell him to get his act together then and that his approach sucks….

    Perhaps a tweet?

  171. cmat0829 says:

I get the point, but lack of focus seems to be an issue for this club…and I count leadoff walks late in tie games as a lack of focus. I love Watson but it seems to be contagious.

  172. cmat0829 says:

    lol

  173. I am not a fan of the “no doubles defense.” I like our quick outfielders’ chances when they have more options than “forward.”

  174. Andrew says:

Agreed, also know as the more singles defense.

  175. Bizrow says:

If Watson goes south, we are in trouble.

In the back of my head, I’m thinking when he comes in, OK, cool, who’s up for us next inning?

  176. cmat0829 says:

    Instant Poll:

How do Bucs win this one?

    A. Tabata scores winning run this inning on an Ike Davis or Jordy Mercer double. Melancon 1-2-3 save.
    B. Mercer solo HR, Melancon save.
    C. Extra innings, Cutch solo HR in 12th or 13th inning.

  177. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I don’t care what’s in his mind, not my job or my worry.

Pretty sure he had no clue where that pitch was at or where it was going to end up. It started on the inside part of the plate and ended up in the dugout.

  178. cmat0829 says:

Rodriguez’ arm is gonna fall off by July.

  179. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I looked at the pitches made by Watson as attacking. If memory serves, it might not, most of the pitches he threw was inside, attacking the hitter.

  180. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Not A

  181. Just think: Bucs could have Travis Ishikawa or Andrew Lambo batting in Ike Davis’ spot.

    I’ll take Ike.

  182. cmat0829 says:

WE NEED TO PINCH HIT FOR STEWART. PLEASE> PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

  183. cmat0829 says:

I’d prefer COLE> or even BARMES

  184. bpn8pitt says:

So good to see Ike and Jordy raise their BAs.

    Barrelling the ball, lately.

  185. JohninOshkosh says:

I didn’t hear that. Interesting. Weeks is a big team oriented kinda guy. Good competitor, too. Kinda surprised to hear that.

  186. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Clint Barmes to 1B.

Thank God he has a 1B mitt.

    Well played Tim, well played

  187. cmat0829 says:

agreed. just think when he starts taking the leftover Adam LaRoche medication….

  188. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Agree Groat

  189. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    What was that?

    Hahahaha

  190. Chris Stewart is my hero!!!

  191. cmat0829 says:

HOLY CRAP???!!!!! CHRIS STEWART GOT A HIT AND AN RBI>…OH MY GOD>

  192. cmat0829 says:

    REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY.

  193. The Gunner says:

    Why???

  194. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Jordy yes, Ike gets more off the end of the bat seeing eye singles than I recall anybody .

    I’ll still take it

  195. Dang! Great time for the squeeze call!

  196. Milo Hamilton says:

For the love of Gene Mauch.

  197. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Calm down.

I have witnessed a Chris Stewart HR live and in person…

  198. Baywatch says:

    Stewart!!!

  199. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Hanger…… Marte delivers

  200. cmat0829 says:

IT’s a MARTE PARTAY!!!!! big hit with RISP…. that odor is Rodriguez’ tires burning… unsustainable, anyone?

  201. bpn8pitt says:

Andrew must of called that exorcist.

    Nice work against KRod, fellas.

  202. Baywatch says:

    And the PARTAY is ON!!

  203. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Whatever works

  204. cmat0829 says:

seriously? Bob Walk homered once too :)

  205. Lad 9 says:

The skipper looking like a genius in the ninth. And I have to admit, I was first in the second guess line when he pinch ran Barmes and let Stewart hit. Which is why I am writing on a blog and he is the dugout.

  206. Bizrow says:

Stewart had a great, hustle, back up play on a Lunchbox/bucket overthrow.

He’s here for the D, any offense is a plus, and he did hustle into scoring position for the Marte drive

  207. cmat0829 says:

Seriously though, this is Frankie Rod’s 21st game in the Brewers’ 40th game. Not sustainable.

  208. The Gunner says:

And Wandy takes the hill for the Bucs tomorrow

  209. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

MW needs to hot RH full time

  210. JohninOshkosh says:

    ++++

K-Rod’s sustainability been a big topic up here.

  211. Bizrow says:

Thought exactly the same thing with the Barmes move

  212. Baywatch says:

    +++ Up here, LAD!!!

  213. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Have always been a fan of him for his defense….smart, strong arm, good blocker.

  214. Bizrow says:

    +++++++

Bucs won’t be able to afford him, either way ;-)

  215. Milo Hamilton says:

Also nicely backed up that ill advised flip by Ike that Liriano couldn’t reach.

  216. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Thanks for ruining tonight’s game

  217. Bizrow says:

    Now lets get this one

  218. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

So. He did it I’m less at bats….wait

  219. Andrew says:

Holy hell he had 0.43 ERA.

  220. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Holy crap my iPhone hates me

  221. When the Pirates get starting pitching, they have a chance to be winners.

Clint Hurdle used his bench and his options well in the top of the 9th. Would have loved the squeeze to work, but I’ll just have to be satisfied with Starling Marte’s double with two ribbies.

  222. JohninOshkosh says:

    +++++

  223. cmat0829 says:

Seriously I could still be typing options on this and don’t think I’d ever had proffered Chris Stewart RBI single…..

  224. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Is anybody really worried about Barmes at 1b?

    Seriously…..

  225. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Eh, I’ll settle for that as well

  226. Hey, no cussing here. Use those bad words on the other blog.

  227. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Does Grilli close when he comes back?

MM has been outstanding in that role.

  228. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Does Grilli close when he comes back?

MM has been outstanding in that role.

  229. cmat0829 says:

Marky Mark seems to have a bunch of funk back… good to see…. Watson is solid we need Grilli to ascend (lol) to his closer role and we’ll have a strength back…..

  230. Lad 9 says:

Hey hey Bay!. Good trip back I hope?

  231. cmat0829 says:

no, we seriously need to consider him a late inning replacement for D if Ike keeps playing with oven mitts….

  232. You gettin’ paid by the post, Nor Cali Ryan?!

  233. Milo Hamilton says:

The daily double of Juan D. & CB Bucknor tomorrow. Thinking of doing something I never do anymore, gambling actual money.

  234. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Agree. I think it depends on what Grilli comes back.

If only they weren’t used so much last year

  235. cmat0829 says:

I lean toward yes, just because I think his personality is such that he would not be as successful in setup role and Marky Mark can….

  236. bpn8pitt says:

I think they should ease Grilli back in. 7th, maybe 8th. See where that velocity sits for a few weeks.

  237. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Shhhh

    I’m on a roll.

  238. bpn8pitt says:

    Lol. Take the over.

  239. Patrick(ri) says:

No game is safe with CBBuckner on the field.

  240. cmat0829 says:

Go for it… I always lose when I try to bet baseball so maybe i need to take one for team and bet Brewers tomorrow…. I actually think Wandy will be serviceable tomorrow, and Marte will spark the offense….but what do I know… i’d have pinch hit Barmes for Stewart

  241. Milo Hamilton says:

    Bingo.

  242. Bizrow says:

I’m thinking Wandy will be back on the DL before the weekend

  243. Milo Hamilton says:

I could never bet against the Pirates. I’m taking the over.

  244. Bizrow says:

    We needed that one

  245. cmat0829 says:

    Don’t be such a Doubting Thomas!! :)

  246. The Gunner says:

A great victory tonight! Wandy better damn well be on an extremely short leash tomorrow.

  247. Patrick(ri) says:

Bianchi struck out before that hit, IMHO.

  248. cmat0829 says:

RAISE IT…. DK, or whomever updates this blog entry, was about 6 minutes early on posting the final score… i love the confidence…..

  249. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’m ok with that idea, though Gaby does well defensively.

  250. Lad 9 says:

Raise it! Sweet ninth inning and a W for Tony Watson. (JRay we miss you and those recaps). Go for the series tomorrow with…..gulp, Wandy on the hill.

  251. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Later all. Go for ANOTHER series win tomorrow..

    CMAT, enjoyed it.

  252. The Gunner says:

Wandy will surprise all of us tomorrow & be back on his “A” game.

  253. cmat0829 says:

Back at ya… thanks for a fun blogathon and a fun finish to the ballgame.

  254. Baywatch says:

Always bittersweet returning after being in the Burgh, LAD. But yeah, nice trip back – and we wound up getting some hefty travel vouchers from Southwest!

  255. Bizrow says:

Well, for one, I’ll be surprised

  256. Milo Hamilton says:

PK Subban kissed Pierre McGuire on the cheek after their post game interview. Oprah is currently in negotiations.

  257. Bizrow says:

    ++++++

  258. The Bucs got only their 5th road win so far, appropriately against the Brewers in Milwaukee tonight, and hopefully, Wandy will show us that he still can win one tomorrow afternoon.

  259. Celebrating a Pirates’ win tonight certainly beats grieving over the Penguins!

  260. Bizrow says:

If he kisses Don Cherry, it will be on PayPer View

    Or Oprah….

  261. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++ to you both.

  262. Patrick says:

Yayyyy!!!! We have our win in Miller Park for the season!

  263. Arriba Wilver says:

Wouldn’t worry about it Biz. I think people are probably tired out from the Pens stuff.

  264. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1
