  1. I’ll fill in for Groaty today.

“Only a few more days (weeks) until Gregory Polanco is deemed ‘ready’ to be promoted to the Buccos and his baserunning, pitch recognition and adversity training has been completed”.

Bats need to back Volquez and start this series right.

    Etch it!

  2. Pirates:
    Gaby DH

  3. Left off Johnson, Roberts and Phelps P for NY

  4. 21sthebest says:

  5. Casoontight.

Great to see him in there.

Some guys were poo-pooing the Yankees and saying we should take 3 or at least 2 of these games. That lineup still looks formidable to me. Soriano has killed us at time in the past.

Teixeira could stove his finger and get hurt or something like that, but McCann and even grizzled, old Jeter can still hurt you.

  6. Chuck H says:

Seems it’s not always the good hitters or the high average hitters who hurt the Pirates. Sometimes, it’s the Mendoza
    line hitters who kill us.

  7. Lad 9 says:

Thanks for the lineup Lucky. Volquez scares me a little bit in this park, but let’s go Bucs!

  8. 21sthebest says:

Diamondbacks name Tony La Russa Chief Baseball Officer. Will oversee all baseball operations.

  9. Thundercrack says:

The Diamondbacks have just vaulted the Cardinals as my most hated team.

  10. Brewers, Cards, Spanks for me. In that order.

  11. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Dodgers, Brews, Cards and Yanks would be my hate order.

  12. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    I’ll add a 5th…..BoSox

  13. 21sthebest says:

I despise the Red Sox. Then the Brewers.

    But I like the Yankees.

  14. Brandie says:

We shall see oh Lad 9!!!

  15. Jandy says:

    Do it Bucs!

  16. Barb says:

I hate ‘em all just to be all encompassing.

  17. JohninOshkosh says:

    Some Yankees fans booing Cutch.

    Who doesn’t like Cutch ?

  18. Patrick(ri) says:

OMG, Davidson behind the plate! We really are snake bitten this year. Just hope his bad calls are evenly distributed.

  19. The Gunner says:

I wish Lloyd McClendon would have beaten that SOB to a pulp back in 2005

  20. Patrick(ri) says:

Wasn’t Jeter voted by players, the most overrated shortstop? That might count as a disparaging word, per Brown & Rock’s Jeter lovefest.

  21. Andrew says:

Flyball out just about everywhere expect Colorado and New York.

  22. 21sthebest says:

The like Cutch. They’re just conditioned to boo.

  23. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    I can agree with that!

  24. bpn8pitt says:

If Mercer can’t hit that? Wow.

  25. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    The Kings of LOB…..Pirates

  26. Arriba Wilver says:

Sounds like I’m not going to have to watch the early part of the game on the DVR.

  27. Patrick(ri) says:

Cy Phelps is a bit off his game, but we still can’t seem to hit his 90mph fb, at least with men on base.

  28. The Gunner says:

    0 for 4 w/RISP.

And the $5 million dollar man gives up another gopher ball.

  29. Barb says:

    I totally agree.

  30. Barb says:

  31. Steelag70 says:

Maybe we can get his pitch count up and get him out of there….

  32. Arriba Wilver says:

The $16 million man gave up gopher balls there. ;-)

  33. Our baserunning stinks.

  34. Patrick(ri) says:

Look like an AA team, today. Yankee stadium choke?

  35. twentytwo22 says:

The Pirates should be wearing cameras around their necks.

  36. Steelag70 says:

Do the Buccos know that YESTERDAY was the rain out???

  37. Patrick(ri) says:

    He tried, but Davidson ducked.

  38. JohninOshkosh says:

    Cubs beat the Brewers 3-0.

Pirates need to find a way to pick up a game today with the Cubs rare win.

    Need a comeback.

  39. JohninOshkosh says:

Matt Garza is another guy who needs to shut his pile hole.

If you feel need to talk crap about your former employer, then you better damn well be able to back it up on the field.

  40. JohninOshkosh says:

    *pie hole*

  41. Steelag70 says:

Well he could shut his “pile” hole too….

  42. JohninOshkosh says:

  43. JohninOshkosh says:

    Unbelievable base blunders this year.

  44. Playoffs by 2012 says:

If the 2002 Oakland A’s were ‘Moneyball’
Then I am going to call the 2014 Pirates

  45. Thundercrack says:

Sanchez looks like he got stuck in the dirt when he slid back.

  46. Patrick(ri) says:

Why is he even close to being out in the circumstances? As you said, unreal.

  47. Barb says:

  48. JohninOshkosh says:

    Overturned, somewhat surprisingly.

  49. Patrick(ri) says:

Did you see Tony’s ***t eating grin? Priceless.

  50. Patrick(ri) says:

    Old Bob got em even.

  51. Playoffs by 2012 says:

I still wish they would have signed Josh Johnson instead of Volquez.
A guy on the DL can’t hurt your lineup every 5th day.

  52. JohninOshkosh says:

Looks like the O’fer RISP boogeyman might be making another appearance this aftenoon.

  53. Lad 9 says:

PLAAAAAYOFFS! Good afternoon sir. Your absence has been frequently lamented of late. Hope all is well.

  54. Thundercrack says:

Our RISP especially with less than 2 out is horrible.

  55. Bizrow says:

Good to see you Playoffs ;-)

  56. Patrick(ri) says:

I think base runners hurt more than the pitching, today. This game should be up for grabs.

  57. twentytwo22 says:

0 runs in 5 innings against this PoS.

  58. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Thanks Laddie. Appreciate that. Life is good, buddy.

  59. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Same to you Biz. Figured I’d stop by real quick. How’s blog life been?

  60. JohninOshkosh says:

Been missing the Caddyshack and Blazing Saddles drops. Check in more often, Playoffs!

  61. Playoffs!!!

Now, we need JRay, Bob Hasis and some other baseball guys to check in.

  62. I’m 61 years old and have an appointment with the heart doctor Tuesday and I truly believe I could outrun Gaby Sanchez from 2nd to home.

  63. JohninOshkosh says:

    That’s a start!!!

  64. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Johnny Wisconsin. Fetch me the old Billy Baroo.

  65. Andrew says:

Volquez has pitched pretty much like a 5th starter all year.

  66. Patrick(ri) says:

The other guy’s FB was too slow.

  67. JohninOshkosh says:

    Atta boy!

  68. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    Good day Rev!
    Mark 9:23

  69. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    Be the ball…be the ball

  70. Playoffs by 2012 says:

What happened to Johnny Ray III?

  71. Lad 9 says:

Volquez’s acute gopheritis is why I was worried about him in this park. And a gopheroscopy doesn’t help that affliction.

  72. Thundercrack says:

Looks like you might be able to outrun Tony Sanchez too

  73. 21sthebest says:

    Hope that’s nothing serious Lucky.

  74. Steelag70 says:

  75. Andrew says:

    Impressive looking dive/slide, though ineffective.

  76. 21sthebest says:

I was hoping for one of those awful outfield throws.

  77. Thundercrack says:

I’m not impressed with The ‘baseball smarts’ of Tony Sanchez.

Sliding into second base he looked like Jimmy Superfly Snuka off the top rope.

  78. Thundercrack says:

    +1 21. That was a good throw

  79. Bizrow says:

Sometimes his throwing reminds me of Ringside Rosie

  80. Thundercrack says:

  81. Patrick(ri) says:

Best hitting catcher since Kendall. Hope he can correct some of his weaknesses.

  82. Steelag70 says:

Maybe the Buccos should sign California Chrome….at least he knows how to run….haha.

  83. JohninOshkosh says:

    Trifecta only paid $38.00.

That, there, is a good horse.

  84. Steelag70 says:

He ran a great race….I will certainly be pulling for him to close it out.

  85. Florida Steeler says:

Can’t believe Neal signs Volquez and Ike Davis. Loney batting .311 playing nearly everyday for Tampa. The Pirate charade continues.

  86. Florida Steeler says:

    Great post–I agree.

  87. You and me both. Thanks.

  88. Double amen to that.

  89. pattonbb says:

I had Danza in the Derby and Ride on Curlin today.

  90. hockeymonster says:

When did they start televising batting practice?

  91. Wouldn’t doubt it, TC. Just mowed 2 lawns and I’d be willing to try. I might need O2 when I was done, but I think I’m faster. When I was young and fat, I was still faster than Barabbas, Gaby and Montana.

  92. Andrew says:

From first base: Pirates .819 OPS Rays .780 OPS

  93. Steelag70 says:

Ride on Curlin came on strong and ran a fantastic race…

  94. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Gonna be a long season. Take care all.

  95. When Scranton-Wilkes Barre plays the Rangers. Oh, wait……….

    Just kidding, Monstrosity.

  96. Stop more often, please.

  97. hockeymonster says:

Your that guy for baseball too? Myyyy goooodness…i’m outta here :)

  98. hockeymonster says:

Ya it looked like the boston series…

  99. JohninOshkosh says:

I had California Chrome in both races. I’ll have him in the Belmont as well. Liked his finish today in the stretch. Sped up enough to get a lead on Ride on Curlin who was smokin in the final 1/4 mile. In last 5-10 yards, it looked like Chrome was even downshifting a bit to cruise to victory.

He’ll have to run a different race in New York, but he has already ran two different race plans so I like his chances.

  100. JohninOshkosh says:

This game was awful! Best part of game was switching channels to the Preakness.

  101. Steelag70 says:

    What a wonderful team….

  102. Steelag70 says:

  103. Daquido_Bazzini says:

From the looks of that game….I could swear the Yankees payroll must be about $125 million more than the Pirates.

  104. Bizrow says:

  105. Bizrow says:

Can someone please tell Greg Brown that the Pirates, have in fact, won in the Bronx? Ok, maybe 54 or so years ago, but the Jolly Roger has been raised there ;-)

  106. twentytwo22 says:

For 3 losses, each Pirate gets
    Picture with Derek Jeter autographed
Picture standing in front of monument of choice
Greeting from Joe Girardi during batting practice
Genuine brand sports jacket worn by George Steinbrenner
Personalized nickname signed on baseball by John Sterling
    Yankees pennant with championship years

It’s a good haul for them. 2 to go. I’m not sure Gerrit Cole wants to be a major league tourist. He may ruin the deal.

  107. JoeyBats says:

    ….after last season….

…tough to watch the GM “punting” this season :-(

  108. Vance Worley throwing well for Indy yet again tonight. ERA at 1.62

Possible #5 with Lee Majors to the bullpen? No, Lee was 6 mil, Volquez only 5.

  109. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I don’t even know if you could say Huntington put out enough effort to use the word “punt”….

  110. bpn8pitt says:

Lucky, beware of AAA numbers, man.

  111. Forget it. 4 runs, 3 earned in the bottom of the fifth.

  112. Speaking of AAA numbers, Polanco 2-3 with a double and RBI (38), BA .385

  113. Florida Steeler says:

Right, always quoting stats that mean nothing.

  114. bpn8pitt says:

I think Polancos going to be a good one…but even Pedro hit .277 at Indy.

  115. Florida Steeler says:

Loney 25 rbi’s; more that your two guys combined.

  116. The Gunner says:

    A couple things:

    1) GP belongs in Pgh NOW but won’t be because the BMTIB’s objective is to line Nutsack’s pockets, not win ballgames
    2) Volquez really stinks & his true colors are coming out

  117. Chuck H says:

The Bucs can’t hit any pitcher with men on base. Can’t understand why they can’t. They get 2 on with no outs, and then,
out, out, out. Of course, we didn’t expect to beat “The best team money can buy”. Maybe tomorrow we’ll get good hp
umpires for a change. GO, STEELERS!!!

  118. 4.71 ERA, Gunner. Worth 5 mil, I guess. Wonder what his xflop is or his fBIP, which are the true indicators right?

  119. The Gunner says:

Ha ha Biz, Ringside Rosie was a beaut!!

  120. Polanco is up to .389 with 3-4 tonight, 2 doubles.

I don’t expect him to hit .389 with the big club this season. Even .289 with his speed and defense, power to the gaps and all fields, it should be exciting.

The thing I like about Worley is his control. 4 K’s, no walks tonight.

  121. The Gunner says:

Volquez has been roughed up pretty good his last 4 starts. Overall, his WHIP IS 1.17 which is good. The fans need to tighten their chinstraps when this guy pitches.

  122. The Gunner says:

Between Worley, Locke, Cumpton & Sadler, one of them has to be a better than the $5 million dollar mistake.

  123. Breakthestreak says:

Maybe Jobn S can comment on how good Ike Davis was in New York again!! Or that people who think Nutting is cheap are idiots!
