    Good stuff, Lad. Thanks.

  3. Bizrow says:

Thanks, as per usual, Lad ;-)

    Beat Em Bucs

If you are new to this blog and haven’t signed in as to where your current location/residence is, well we keep a list for fun, its posted on the game threads Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays

  4. Maz in Iowa says:

Draft coming up.They need help(badly and soon)at SS/3B/1B.So how many CFs will they draft early? :)

  5. Maz in Iowa says:

BTW I mentioned 3B as I don’t expect Pedro to be around much longer with Boras as his agent

  6. Arriba Wilver says:

BPA—best player available, in the early rounds especially.

  7. Reading says:

Watched the Cardinals pre-game show. Enthusiasm rampant. Everybody psyched. Of course, game now in rain delay. But hey. Pirates fans will have same anticipation come September callups. Reminds me of The Caine Mutiny when Caine officers go over to the carrier to see Halsey to get rid of Queeg. They back off after realizing that the carrier is the real Navy, not the Caine. The Cards are the real Navy. The Pirates are the Caine.

  8. Arriba Wilver says:

Is this game on Root or Fox?

  9. Bizrow says:

Yup the best player, in their opinion, that falls to them at No 24

  10. Bizrow says:

    Fox, I think, 7:15

  11. Reading says:

Hitting advice for Pedro: Keep your eye on the ball. Time-honored slump buster. Watch Pedro when in an 0-17 streak, head pulling out. When on hot streak, head right in the hitting zone barrelling balls up. I say this every year as it is obvious.

  12. Arriba Wilver says:

    Answer my own question—Fox.

    Lacrosse is on Root.

  13. Arriba Wilver says:

    DK will fix it.

  14. scapper says:

Well done with the Caine Mutiny analogy!

  15. Maz in Iowa says:

    Pedro 12-61(.197) w/RISP.At least he’s hitting 6th these days

  16. Maz in Iowa says:

BTW Harrison is hitting .389(7-18) w/RISP

  17. Thundercrack says:

Is it too much to ask that for Polanco’s first game at PNC Park:

    1. The Pirates give the fans as much notice as possible

    2. That there be a groupon available for that game

  18. Maz in Iowa says:

    What no bobbleheads? :)

  19. 21sthebest says:

    Oscar Taveras is 1-2.

    Guess what the 1 was?

  20. Cmat0829 says:

The next GM who drafts in baseball based on current roster gaps will 1) be the first. 2) be fired immediately. 3-5 year development cycle and not to mention prospect attrition. But we all know that right?

  21. Cmat0829 says:

HR of course. By the way Cards speculation is that john jay will be traded and Matt Adams will become a ‘super sub’. I did double check that. Would’ve thought any mention of super sub and Matt Adams would be referring to a three feet long with double meat and extra mayo.

  22. 21sthebest says:

Please don’t forget the banana peppers. I gotta have banana peppers on a sub.

  23. Brandie says:

HA!!!!! Baseball is a skinny man’s game…said no one EVER!!!! ;)

  24. Karen22 says:

Let’s take the series tonight! Need some hope for the summer, ya know? Tomorrow is June 1st!

And by the way, why are Mercer & Stewart in the lineup?? Geeeeeeeez.

  25. Karen22 says:

Uh – JUNE 1st. EDIT BUTTON, please!!

  26. Brandie says:

    Good evening Temptress!

  27. Thundercrack says:

Where else besides first base can Adams play? How can he super sub

  28. Arriba Wilver says:

It’s today or tomorrow for Mercer and Stewart. Have to assume there’s a strategy there.

  29. Karen22 says:

Hey, Ms. Brandie! I’ve been around, but not much posting…had our 34th annual FakeFamilyFest (“only” 22-about 10 couldn’t make it- this year of three generations of our very best pals LIVING UNDER OUR ROOF Memorial Day weekend…ALL weekend. We import them from hometown Cleveland and beyond. I’ve been recuperating ever since. Drinking READ now! GO BUCS!

  30. Chuck H says:

How come other teams bring up a rookie from the minors and their first at-bat they hit a HR? I don’t recall any Pirate call-up doing that, does anyone out there know?

  31. Brandie says:

Next year I want to party with you!

  32. Thundercrack says:

I think it was a Mar-Tay Par-Tay for his first at bat

  33. Maz in Iowa says:

Nice to see Cubs giving beatdown on the beermakers

  34. Carlos Danger says:

I think it was the first pitch as well, but I could be wrong.

  35. Cmat0829 says:

Didn’t matte hr in the first pitch he ever saw?

  36. Cmat0829 says:

  37. Cmat0829 says:

    Yes!!! Hate those friggin brewers.

  38. Chuck H says:

    Thanks, yins, for that info.

  39. Maz in Iowa says:

Just checked on the Indy line up.Polanco is listed as lead off….unless it’s a typo.

  40. Maz in Iowa says:

Rojas getting a start as well.

  41. Maz in Iowa says:

Also Indy is listed as Rojas’ birthplace.Nice

  42. Flbucco says:

    It’s yinz – not yins. ;-)

  43. Flbucco says:

Adams would look good in black and gold ;-)
    Local guy

  44. Flbucco says:

Hammel putting together a nice year…

  45. Andrew says:

    Polanco last 10 games: .189/.262/.297

  46. Doubt it’s a typo, Maz. The league RBI leader will be leading off in the ‘Burgh in ___________ weeks.

  47. Patrick(ri) says:

  48. Brandie says:

    What a waste.

  49. Lad 9 says:

BRRRRRRANDDDIEEEEEEEEE! How is the fine girl tonight?

  50. Lad 9 says:

For some reason, I really like Hammel. Not sure why……

  51. Florida Steeler says:

What an utterly stupid challenge by Clint. Who was that coach giving Clint the thumbs up?? He needs to find another job!!!!!

  52. Brandie says:

    Dodgers up! Boo!

  53. Flbucco says:

Somebody needs to do the percentages on these things before the challenge – not sure it was worth it – even if they win

  54. Florida Steeler says:

  55. Flbucco says:

Too many walks – and it is the first inning…
    4th in the NL

  56. Andrew says:

Cumpton is here to pound the zone with sinking fastballs, he is not doing that right now.

  57. Brandie says:

What In The Wide World of Sports Is A Goin’ On Here?

  58. Flbucco says:

Maybe he spent too much time watching Frankie and Eddie – this nibbling around at the bottom of the zone needs to be adjusted if the ump is not giving you strikes…

  59. Patrick(ri) says:

Just a guess, but it looks like Cumpton is getting movement, but doesn’t have a handle on it — things will get better?

  60. Bizrow says:

  61. Reading says:

    Thanks, man.

  62. Bizrow says:

Cumpton settled down. 37 pitches thru 2 though

  63. Maz in Iowa says:

Cumpton throws a ginormous amount of sinkers.Maybe he needs to work on a cutter/changeup or something else

  64. Florida Steeler says:

What is the deal with Marte and Mercer??

  65. Flbucco says:

Wasted challenge comes back to haunt

If Gordon had possession – Marte had three times the possession

  66. Maz in Iowa says:

I hope the pen is rested

  67. Andrew says:

    That was a catch.

  68. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Just went on a Bob Nutting rant with some Dodger fans in a Santa Monica bar.
I’m expecting the Pro Nutter Police (PPP) to come through the doors any minute now and arrest me.
    No questions asked…..

  69. Florida Steeler says:

    Boy, is this ugly.

  70. Florida Steeler says:

    But, Clint blew a challenge

  71. Florida Steeler says:

How long does bubble gum man leave this kid in the game?? And, Cumpton is the best we have in the minors?? We are in a bunch of trouble.

  72. Andrew says:

Groundball pitcher, who doesn’t get strikeouts, there is little room for error. And there have been plenty of mistakes.

  73. Maz in Iowa says:

Game might be over already. How many times have the Bucs scored 7 runs in a game this season? :(

  74. Florida Steeler says:

Look out–they may take you to Venice Beach and tell you to fight you’re way out!!!!

  75. Flbucco says:

Maybe it is the weekends – this looks a lot like the Bucs we saw at Citi Bank ;-)

Not all Cumpton’s fault – just pretty crappy play all around – with a dumb managers decision thrown in

  76. Arriba Wilver says:

    Hey, Chuck.

Thumbs up to your response to my question yesterday. Well done. :-)

  77. Maz in Iowa says:

Wanna bet Cumpton is back on the mound?

  78. Arriba Wilver says:

Anything happening in the Pirate game yet?

    I’ve been watching Lacrosse.

  79. Patrick(ri) says:

    Time of day triple.

  80. Carlos Danger says:

This is rough. Lead off triple only further complicates matters. Tough to watch so far.

  81. Maz in Iowa says:

  82. Patrick(ri) says:

    No yard work?

  83. Maz in Iowa says:

Barmes can pitch. It might be one of those games

  84. TJA says:

    All on national television, too!

  85. Andrew says:

The Dodgers Win Expectancy is above 95%, and the bullpen has been used quite a bit of late, but I don’t think Hurdle understands Win Expectancy because he wouldn’t have used the a challenge in the first inning.

  86. Maz in Iowa says:

    Batting practice

  87. Carlos Danger says:

    Dude. Man. This sucks.

  88. Brandie says:

This game has gone from “Ugly” to “Ridiculously Fugly”. Shaking Revvie’s Head.

  89. TJA says:

Thought I would check in: I am going ack to enjoy my vacation and not let the Pirates mess this up today. Stay well, everyone.

  90. Bizrow says:

Throw Cumpton again next start. Remember, he is replacing Wandy

AW please check your e-mail in a couple of minutes, thx

  91. Carlos Danger says:

And jeanmar is our next option? Ima turn it.

  92. Brandie says:

    Good vibes to you Justice!

  93. Andrew says:

    Pirates better shower well.

  94. Maz in Iowa says:

No way Cumpton should have been out for this inning…..I don’t care if his spot in the batting order is coming up

  95. :D

Well, Polanco is 1-3 out of the leadoff spot with a run scored.

  96. Maz in Iowa says:

Down by a FG and a TD.Part of this is on Hurdle

  97. Up to Jeanmar to take one for the team. Why wear out the pen on this mess, national TV or not? Let him get his brains beat in for a few innings, then let Morris finish. (Then release both of ‘em like they did to Mazzaro).

Sunday lineup out of the way, we can take the series tomorrow.

  98. Brandie says:

    Laughing Jandy’s A Off! ;)

    Pot Stirrer!

  99. Patrick(ri) says:

And Marte, and Walker and Gomez, and the southern Calif sun. May as we’ll lose ugly.

  100. Maz in Iowa says:

Maybe they should rest some regulars.Barmes at 2B and Snider in RF

  101. Brandie says:

    Testify Maz!

  102. Lad 9 says:

Jeanmar starting the comeback! Cough, cough….. :)

  103. I play bass in TC and the Pot Stirrers. Not much of a singer, though.

  104. bpn8pitt says:

Bpn is sitting two stools away from Mr Madden watching this nonsense.

Nice guy, talked some ball with me. Noted Tavares was called up today.

  105. Lad 9 says:

And he was actually safe at home IMHO.

  106. Brandie says:

May I be a Doo woo girl then?

  107. Maz in Iowa says:

Shades of Bugs Bunny and the Gas House Gorillas.Woeful

  108. Bizrow says:

Yeah, I won’t sleep too well tonight

There is still the option of three of four

And I would have been happy with a split

  109. Brandie says:

    At least Bugs Bunny won!

  110. Maz in Iowa says:

Polanco with his 2nd hit and an RBI.”Slump over”

  111. He’s 2-4 tonight, 46th RBI, BA still at .351 and OPS is .968

  112. Doo Woo or Doo Wop, either one.

  113. Maz in Iowa says:

    Yeah.Got that right

  114. Patrick(ri) says:

At least “sell by date” is still whacking (that’s “hammering” for you TN haters) the ball.

  115. JohninOshkosh says:

“There out there not having fun…
    In that warm California sun…”

  116. Brandie says:

    “Looks like another crummy day…
    I despise LA”…

    With apologies to Randy Newman.

  117. Flbucco says:

Still needs to work on some things – batting lead off is new….

Expect he will now be ready in about 13 months

  118. Bizrow says:

    Their bullpen sucks

    A comeback

    Wouldn’t that be wild

  119. The Gunner says:

The great Travis Snider makes another contribution.

  120. Lad 9 says:

    Dripping with putrid….

  121. Bizrow says:

But honestly, Nick should be fired.

  122. Maz in Iowa says:

Yeah but he had a thing about short people too

  123. Bizrow says:

    I like the guy

Hope he gets a job when he gets released

  124. The Gunner says:

Horris serves up a gopher ball

  125. JohninOshkosh says:

“Welcome to the Hotel Dodger Stadium, such a lovely place….such a lovely place
You can strike out any time you please, but you can never win.”

    “California choking…on such a summer’s day.”

    “California uber sucking…..Cal-i-fornia uber sucking…”

  126. Lad 9 says:

I do too Biz. I wish him nothing but the best – he just can’t play. And I am sure he will make a fine chef at a nice establishment when he gets DFA’d. :)

  127. Q of the night:

What former #1 draft pick has his third throwing error in only his 10th game tonight for Indy?

(He does have a hit and an RBI though)

  128. Lad 9 says:

“Well East coast teams they play here
And we beat them like a drum……

We wish they all could be California teams..”

  129. I still say a nice gig on The Food Network, Lad. Ex-ballplayer turned chef. It’d be better than going bankrupt in his own restaurant and have to go back and play independent league ball.

Unless he could do like you said and get a job in a BBQ or something.

  130. Maz in Iowa says:

All 4 minor league teams lost tonight.Geeminy Christmas what a crappy night!!

  131. Lad 9 says:

You are probably right Lucky. He could take over the noon hour and call it “Lunch with The Lunch Box”. :)

  132. Lad 9 says:

Ouch. I was hoping his defense would settle down.

  133. Andrew says:

Travis Snider: former #6 overall prospect.

  134. The Gunner says:

Gee, let me guess. Could it be the regular catcher for the 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates?

  135. Lad 9 says:

On the bright side tonight, the blonde in the first row behind the logo is certainly easier to watch than the game……

  136. Brandie says:

“I’m Gettin’ outta Cali, Cali, Cali,
    I’m Gettin’ outta Cali,
Excuse me, I don’t think so.”

With apologies to LL Cool J.

  137. Brandie says:

    And there’s your Silver LinOff!

    Still laughing Jandy’s A Off!

  138. The Gunner says:

Hey Lad, Tabata has 3 hits tonight! That’s some positive news.

  139. JohninOshkosh says:

++++Excellent, both of you. Thanks for playing! You both win a six month supply of Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco treat!

  140. Brandie says:

    Joggin’ Joe becomes Joltin’ Joe!

  141. Lad 9 says:

:) :). You know Muppet, the blog discourse has taken a decided turn toward a G rating since we both got our new jobs and can’t post as much…

  142. Lad 9 says:

Very true Gunner. In point of fact, Tabby has morphed into a dandy fourth outfielder with (hold the pitchforks villagers) a very affordable contract.

  143. The Gunner says:

Didn’t Mama Cass do some California choking on a ham sandwich?

  144. Brandie says:

I did not know you got a new job. Congrats Lad. Gotta schmutz up the blog when we can!

  145. Lad 9 says:

Thanks Brandie. Same company, same place, but a bigger job. And I like it!

  146. Brandie says:

Throw in the cheap lawn fur.iture from the 70’s Wheel of Fortune and you got yourself a deal!

  147. Brandie says:

We could sign Bugs Bunny but I am not sure of his Super 2 Status.

  148. Flbucco says:

Now if the BMTIB could just get some team other than the Pirates to see some value in him and take him off of our hands

  149. Lad 9 says:

Thank you John, but pale imitations. You once again set the bar extremely high…

  150. The Gunner says:

I agree with you about Tabby being a fairly good 4th OFer. Much better than that damn Snider.

  151. dennis g says:

Marte hit a HR in his first at bat did he not?

  152. dennis g. says:

Don Leppert did it in 1961 and once again it was not an omen of good things to come. A curious fact though is Hoyt Wilhelm hit one as a relief pitcher in his third game or so, but his first at bat. In 1070 games he never hit another.

  153. dennis g. says:

How did this differ from the ball that Cutch dropped last week. It seemed to me to be very similar and Hurdle did not challenge that even though one was available. Is this something that is challengeable? I thought there were specific items that could not be challenged, specifically those things that involve an umpire’s judgment, like a ball that is fair going over third base but lands in foul territory. Even though the announcers kept saying that Hurdle could have challenged had he had one left I don’t believe this is the case, but he could have cited baseball rule 2.0 on what is a catch, since Marte did not drop the ball after contact with anything.

  154. dennis g. says:

Am I the only one who saw him trip leaving the batter’s box because he was watching the ball instead of running? He was out by only a step and followed by two straight singles. There is a tendency on this blog to love or hate a particular player based on their latest results. He still has 7 GIDP’s and a terrible arm when he even throws in the right direction. Is it really possible that he is the same age as Marte and three years younger than Walker?

  155. Well, at least the Pirates got a series split and they won their first two games in LA in 10 years, although that clearly isn’t enough, obviously. Now after today, it’s on to the usually friendlier confines of San Diego, where they’ll hopefully play 2013 ball more often than not.

  156. Tonight, the main question will be how well will Endison Voquez do vs. Greinke, who’s 8-1. on ESPN, although I’m afraid I already know what’ll happen, so I just thank heaven we’ll be playing San Diego after this.

  157. JRay3 says:

Thought I would add here as well that I have just found out Bryan Morris has been traded to the Marlins.

I wish him much success with his knew team.

  158. JRay3 says:
