  1. JRay3 says:

Marte gets set down tonight, probably a good thing. Snider makes the start in his place, hope he can build off his pinch hit from last night.

Cole versus a AA call up has to be advantage Bucs, right?

Pirates 9-4 in last 13, 5-3 on tho road swing and a just 2.5 GB if a NL playoff position.

But as Neil Walker told me last night still a lot of baseball to be played. Time to go get another series tonight.

Sitting behind home plate this evening to take in Cole….Let’s GO Bucs!

  2. Bizrow says:

    Bring home a win JRay

    Beat Em Bucs

  4. The Gunner says:

    JRay

Keep bringing us some good luck in SD. We are all going to hold you personally accountable for the Buccos’ performance tonight. I think you can handle the pressure, for sure!

  5. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

The only thing I worry about with a new pitcher is the advantage he has over hitters.

May take a couple of trips to get through the lineup.

Only takes one good inning, especially with Cole on the mound.

Don’t panic if the Pirates don’t get to him in the first couple of innings.

  6. Maz in Iowa says:

On trading Tabata. It might be a good idea to move him before he has another one of those injuries and his BA is still high.

  7. The Gunner says:

Outstanding point, Maz! Tabby has improved but, a leopard doesn’t change its spots (if you catch my drift)

  8. Maz in Iowa says:

Seems like he’s always got a bad hammy

  9. Thundercrack says:

I understand all that about Tabata. But I don’t know if I can take watching Snider in the batter’s box – – or his adventures in the outfield any longer.

  10. The Gunner says:

Tabby definitely has some baggage. Maz, do you live near Dyersville, Iowa?

  11. Maz in Iowa says:

About 90 miles.Yes the Field is just as it was from the movie. Also about 70 miles from Fairfield… hometown of Milo Hamilton.

  12. Bizrow says:

    Left handed stick, short wall

Snider would be DFA’d, Tabata could bring a return if with some cashola

    We’ll see TC

Heck I pulled for Moss for the same reason ;-)

  13. The Gunner says:

    TC

I’m no fan of Snider either but, his salary is less than Tabby’s so you know what that means. And probably the BMTIB can receive somewhat slightly better value in return for #31.

  14. The Gunner says:

Me and 2 of my cronies made a trip to Dyersville back in 1991. On the way back home, he went thru Chicago and saw a game @ Wrigley Field. We had a great time playing baseball on that field and I have it on film for posterity.

  15. Brandie says:

Wishing the Buccos the best of vibes tonight. Glad Marte is riding the bench. Could be he’s pressing. Looks utterly clueless as to how to hit major league pitching. Maybe he needs some more seasoning.

  16. Thundercrack says:

You had to go and do it. You had to mention Moss!

( I do root for that guy )

  17. Thundercrack says:

But between the two ‘evils’ I thin Tabata is the better player. And that who I want us to keep

  18. Bizrow says:

I think, relatively speaking, $$ is not a problem this season, they have cash to spend

For example, the Morris trade commits another 1.5 million

Oh well, thanks to all of you for not dissing on each other, lets watch as JRay brings home the W

  19. Bizrow says:

    Me too

I also root for Joey Bats

  20. Bizrow says:

    Not to judge

Tabby has a kiss tatooed to his neck

    Lunchbucket had a black eye

    Kinda kidding, just having fun

  21. Lad 9 says:

    Defrock the Padres again!

  24. Maz in Iowa says:

Hello Brandie queen o the asylum.

  25. Maz in Iowa says:

Zach Duke is having a stellar season too

  26. Brandie says:

    Evening Lad!

  27. Brandie says:

Yo Temptress. Now we won’t have to stress over Marte and his invisible wiffle ball bat!

  28. Bizrow says:

    lettuce us get all IN?

  29. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I like Tabata much more than Snider.

He’s not the best, but he can play all 3 OF positions and is better than Snider offensively. Which isn’t saying much.

  30. kr70 says:

always wanted to see “The Field”

  31. Florida Steeler says:

I am impressed that some people on this blog are able to talk with players and get quotes!!!!

  32. Maz in Iowa says:

    Plunder the lox!!

  33. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Watching an American Legion coach come UN-GLUED over a botched DP play.

    Cracks me up

    #RealWorldProblems

  34. kr70 says:

Yeah, guys, unlike Dejan, who are not on the payroll!

  35. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

And know how to play at the MLB level, that’s the MOST impressive part.

  36. Bizrow says:

Who is the better value, trade wise?

Heck, doesn’t Tabata have Clemente tattooed some where on his body

    Gotta love that, seriously

And I do love that, but this is the time for him to move on

  37. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Insinuating DK is on the Pirates payroll is ridiculous

  38. Bizrow says:

Yup, I pull for most ex Buccos

  39. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’d say Tabby has more value, but he’s not bringing any MLB ready return.

  40. Arriba Wilver says:

No on the advantage. We talked about it last thread. Bad JuJu with first time call ups from AA.

    It’s all on you, JRay.

  41. Arriba Wilver says:

I hope that was a joke, Ryan.

  42. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Nothing but jokes AW.

  43. Bizrow says:

I got into coaching because you looked at the so called adults on the field and you just had to say no

  44. Arriba Wilver says:

One thing I’ve never associated with Tabata is “thin.”

  45. Bizrow says:

Yes, I agree Ryan, no MLB ready talent in return

  46. Bizrow says:

    Is it game time yet?

    PS, its Tuesday, right ;-)

  47. Maz in Iowa says:

Polanco 0-3(so far)…HOWEVER he has an RBI and throws out a runner at 2nd

  48. Arriba Wilver says:

    Cool.

  49. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Yup. I used to have a hot head too ( don’t talk to the quality assurance guy from today) but realized it wasn’t worth it.

Kids don’t learn from that and it does you no good as a coach to hollar at the umps.

  50. Arriba Wilver says:

    Push his arrival date back.

  51. Bizrow says:

Kids learn from moving on and the game is there to win, bad breaks and bad umps happen, battling is what counts. Ryan coaching was one of the best things I ever did

  52. Bizrow says:

    Mid June, AW,

  53. Arriba Wilver says:

As long as it’s not Friday the 13th.

  54. Bizrow says:

    Good talk today.

Again, and its a repeat, no character attacks

  55. The Gunner says:

I understand it is very commercialized now. When we were there, it was not. I got a chance to pitch to a young man there who was being scouted by one of the MLB team. Needless to say, the shots he hit off me went deep into the fields of corn.

  56. Bizrow says:

Well, Hurdle wears No 13, so you never know [-)

  57. cmat0829 says:

The last “Polanco preparations” are in full swing… GP has been moved to the leadoff spot… now JayHey has moved to LF, which other than 3B is the likely spot he will get at bats in once GP arrives…. Maybe whomever has June 6 on the Polanco Pool is right after all….

As to who goes, Tabby or Snider, if we are going purely on the merits, it’s a no brainer that Tabby stays and Snider goes. I think the capabilities gap is pretty wide at this point. Neither has any real trade value, let’s be honest, regardless of what we think we are ‘packaging’ with them. If not a “CL” move to buy some time, I’d expect Snider to be DFA’d. I’d be floored otherwise.

  58. cobra39 says:

I’m flying to Miami to see Pirates play the Fish. Hope Greggy Baseball’s on the big club by then.

  59. Carlos Danger says:

Keep it classy, San Diego (blog).

  60. Lad 9 says:

    BRANDIEEEEEEE! Good evening, Lady Dyn-o-mite!

  61. Reading says:

I’m hoping this will be like when the Pirates faced that Rule 5 Brewers guy from Taiwan and it was jack city.

  62. Bizrow says:

Now that is pretty cool beans

  63. Bizrow says:

    +++

    I think we are

  64. Reading says:

It’s got to be like Christmas Eve for Polanco right now, knowing the Treaner calling him into the office to pretend to bench him, then give him the plane ticket to PIT is happening any day now.

  65. Carlos Danger says:

Did anyone take Bryan Morris’s place on the roster? Or is it Morris’ (without the 2nd “s”)?

  66. Brandie says:

And the bagels and cream cheese too!

  67. Brandie says:

Lady Dyn-o-mite? I like it. Makes me sound like a rapper!!!

  68. Reading says:

Surprised that Quentin is not starting.

  69. Carlos Danger says:

Ahhh. That guy. Can’t believe I missed that news.

  70. chethejet1 says:

Snyder is being replaced with a LH bat and is the logical player to be DFA.

  71. JRay3 says:

After hearing him get chastised by Padres fans after not running out grounder in 9th that Pedro fumbled for a few seconds…can’t say I am.

Bud Black had to send a message, that type of play a large part of why Padres seem to be in death spiral.

  72. Arriba Wilver says:

    + 1/2. I’d have given you a 1, but you misspelled Snider. ;-)

  73. Reading says:

I’m joking JRay. Check the second to last post from last night’s game thread. Saved Pedro an error, though.

  74. Milo Hamilton says:

Not exactly. I took a pretty low shot at the Pirate Parrot.

  75. Bizrow says:

Folks may I say, we might be scrabbling back into the race?

  76. The Gunner says:

    Biz

The Bucs definitely have an opportunity to get back into the race. I know I sound like a broken record but, the starting pitching needs to start lasting into the 7th & 8th innings. Otherwise, the bullpen will be 100% by mid-June.

  77. JRay3 says:

My bad, didn’t pick up on the pun.

  78. Reading says:

Still waiting for somebody on the Root Pirates Memories commercial to blurt out, “I remember the Pirates losing more games than they won for 20 years in a row.”

  79. JRay3 says:

Ran into a Pirate fan during BP who lives in Orange County who shared stories with me about growing up a Bucs fan from Nebraska.

Telling me stories of the the ’60 World Series team the early 70’s teams and a night in St Louis when Bob Prince was the radio guy and he invited him into the booth with Nellie? And Joe Brown? Shared some of the lines Prince would say off air.

Really neat opportunities that arise when at a ballpark wearing a teams colors.

  80. Bizrow says:

Gunner, May i say, that is one of the best Avatars, ever.

Yup, starting pitching is the key

If you were on Dejan’s talk today, well that is what he said as well.

No strength can be used if you can’t get to it (my description)

I don’t want to see Cole go 5 with 10 K’s, how about 7 with several, gotta get the K’s achieved?

  81. Bizrow says:

    Thanks for sharing that, JRay3

  82. Bizrow says:

Tell em to call me ;-)

  83. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I love coaching. I also love umping. Weird I know.

Funny how once I got into umping my attitude changed.

    New appreciation for the unappreciated.

  84. Carlos Danger says:

Strike zone seemed kinda generous there. Hope Cole gets the same types of calls.

  85. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Guess I missed a good discussion.

I’m guessing it had something to do with Polanco though.

  86. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Can’t watch the game yet, not home from my sons game

  87. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Still 4 more solid months.

Notice how the SP has been better? (Except for Cumptons bad start in LA)

    It helps

  88. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    100% agree Biz.

Strikeouts are awesome, but I’ll take a first pitch out any time

  89. Reading says:

    Took care of that.

  90. The Gunner says:

    Biz

I am glad you like my new Avatar – it wasn’t easy to create. Well, as my old pal Bob Prince would say, “We need to go out and strap it on ‘em tonight!”

  91. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I do like a good character attack from time to time.

  92. JRay3 says:

Sitting 15 rows behind home plate and I can say definitively both of these pitchers showing off their live arms. Cole hitting 98 multiple times in home half.

Lots of heat coming in this one.

  93. Maz in Iowa says:

Will we see 100 mph from Gerco?

  94. Reading says:

Okay. Everybody hits now. Novelty over.

  95. Maz in Iowa says:

At least we got Snider comin up…..haha

  96. The Gunner says:

what color shirt and cap are you wearing?

  97. Arriba Wilver says:

I hate AA call ups for the opposing team. When was the last time the Pirates had a good one—Randy Tomlin?

  98. Florida Steeler says:

Is this Diaz behind the plate??

  99. Maz in Iowa says:

I see Wirfin Obispo pitched tonight.I knew everyone was wondering bout dat. :)

  100. Arriba Wilver says:

Is the home plate ump related to the rook?

  101. twentytwo22 says:

Every close pitch is a strike for the rookie. After last night, the umpire isn’t letting the Pirates take pitches like a good hitting team. Be ready to hit the fastball over the plate and it might not matter.

  102. Reading says:

    He allegedly wirfed ten batters.

  103. Lad 9 says:

Alan Porter on balls and strikes. I thought the same thing.

  104. The Gunner says:

Randy Tomlin or John Smiley was the last one. And, the one before that was Woodie Fryman in 1966.

  105. Reading says:

He was his Legion coach. Okay, maybe not.

  106. Arriba Wilver says:

He called a ball clearly outside a strike on Snider, then called a ball well within the strike zone for Cole a ball.

I’m not one to overly complain about officials, but this guy is terrible.

  107. JRay3 says:

Black shirt….mustard yellow hat with 1979 early 80’s Pirate logo.

  108. Florida Steeler says:

Really bad, that is why I thought it was Diaz but Lad discovered it is Alan Porter.

  109. Reading says:

    Okay. Everyb

  110. Maz in Iowa says:

Bucs got Snider to look bad hitting.Instead of Marte

  111. Florida Steeler says:

Can anyone on this team bunt????

  112. Maz in Iowa says:

    Mercer likes Cally

  113. Flbucco says:

    +1

  114. JRay3 says:

Walker having a very All-Star like year…lock him up.

  115. pattonbb says:

Neil Walker better make this year’s all star team.

  116. Flbucco says:

I thought Fryman was going to be the next Vern Law – think he started off 8-1 or 8-2
Weels came of fast – but he went on to have a pretty nice career

  117. JRay3 says:

Hahn having issues in his second time through Bucs lineup.

  118. JRay3 says:

Definitely not this teams strong suit.

  119. JRay3 says:

Cardinals lose again, Brewers look like they are going to take a L, great opportunity for Bucs to keep chipping away.

  120. radio wave says:

Padres radio crew fhocked by NW homer. Said not many like that in their park.

  121. pattonbb says:

I doubt anyone was more shocked than Walker.

  122. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++

  123. Milo Hamilton says:

Joe West has the plate tomorrow for getaway day. Everything close will be a strike.

  124. Milo Hamilton says:

Hope you heard it JRay because I doubt you saw it. Goodness.

  125. JRay3 says:

And El Toro takes the rookie yard and all of a sudden it’s 4-0 good guys.

Hahn definitely not fooling Bucs in second AB’s.

  126. Flbucco says:

Time to trade Pedro – he NEVER delivers in the clutch

  127. Reading says:

    Gone. Altitude: 12 feet.

  128. JRay3 says:

Jordy, Jordy me….isn’t Mercer like 6 for his last 7? Nice to see him finally getting stick going.

  129. Maz in Iowa says:

Is this the same Mercer? wth

  130. JRay3 says:

Florida Steeler – that bunt was for you.

  131. Florida Steeler says:

    +++++

  132. Milo Hamilton says:

They timed it at 3.5 seconds from bat to stands.

  133. JRay3 says:

    +24

  134. Andrew says:

    Just about, straight line drive.

  135. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Pedro starting to heat up a bit.

The offense needs his contribution. Makes everybody better.

At least until he cools off again in 2 weeks

  136. JRay3 says:

Well Bucs ensure it will be a short debut for Hahn as they start battering him around a bit in the 3rd and 4th.

Lots if black and yellow here at Petco…it is a Bucco takeover!

  137. Andrew says:

Jason Lane? I’d feel bad for this organizations fans, but I follow the Pirates.

  138. Milo Hamilton says:

Not too many relief pitchers with 61 big league homers. Actually none.

  139. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

This game seems like a high school game now…..

But, what was NW swinging at?

  140. Florida Steeler says:

He has a tough time batting right handed.

  141. Chuck H says:

    Gomez goes

  142. Reading says:

Since this is gimmick night, I’m wondering if the Padres will bat a guy wearing uniform number 7/8.

  143. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Not this year….that horse has left

  144. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Word of the night “reinvent”

    Greg likes it a lot

  145. Chuck H says:

Bad at-bat for Walker- not one pitch even close to a strike,

  146. Maz in Iowa says:

Jon Singleton brought up early by the stros homered in his 1st game.

  147. Milo Hamilton says:

A Brewers fan fell some 25 feet from the Miller Park TGI Friday’s right into the Brewers bullpen. He was said to be “conscious and alert”. Which is more than you can say for Bob Uecker most nights.

  148. Florida Steeler says:

.263 BA–don’t think the horse has left yet. OPS 717 ???

  149. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    South Hills commercial…

    Home

  150. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Yup, left the stalls.

  151. Milo Hamilton says:

Pretty simple for Pedro, the hits start coming the glove will follow.

  152. Andrew says:

League average OPS from 2nd basemen is .675 this season.

  153. Flbucco says:

And we have to trade Pedro – he can’t make routine plays at 3rd base

  154. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

He’s had what? 40 ABs this year from the right side?

    Good stats

  155. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Nice stat….

  156. Maz in Iowa says:

Jedi mind trick to Pedro..”These are not the pitches you want to swing at”.

  157. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Can we start the “extend Gerrit Cole now” conversation?

    If so, please extend him.

    I know, I know he’s a 1. A Boras client, they don’t sign extensions 2. Nutting is too cheap

  158. The Bucs are doing okay tonight so far. Meanwhile, I just heard on ESPN that Dan Marino has withdrawn from that lawsuit, which makes one wonder why he ever got involved with that in the first place.

  159. Andrew says:

That dreaded 3rd time through the order.

  160. Steelag70 says:

    Bring the designated RP w/ 2 outs….Jared Hughes….

  161. Milo Hamilton says:

Renewing my call for 9 relief pitchers.

  162. Flbucco says:

Cruz would have been a pretty nice RF option for the Bucs

  163. Maz in Iowa says:

Hurdle with a good pitching change.Say it aint so

  164. Flbucco says:

Wonder how he would feel about giving first base a try?

  165. Steelag70 says:

I believe he received a QO from the Rangers…so draft pick would have been given up…

  166. Milo Hamilton says:

Woohoo, The Bob Nutting Telethon !

    Yes ! Yes ! Yes !

  167. Maz in Iowa says:

Feel like Fred Sanford….”it’s the big one Elizabeth(clutches heart)”

  168. Andrew says:

I am not sure about that, right handed power comes to die in PNC, and Cruz does nothing else well.

  169. Thundercrack says:

My At-Bat app is not showing the scores to any of the games.

Anyone else having the same problem?

  170. Reading says:

Negative post: not liking this 4 innings without a Pirates hit.

  171. Maz in Iowa says:

    5 freakin pitches?Cmon guys!

  172. Andrew says:

There were a couple of well hit balls that were at people, but yeah you would hope for a hit or two off a guy throwing in the majors for the first time.

  173. Reading says:

Padres are lollygaggers going through the motions.

  174. Lad 9 says:

I liked Mark the Shark getting a little physical with Cabrera there. Maybe Everth took the wrong PED’s. He got pushed around by a pitcher! :)

  175. Reading says:

I just hope it doesn’t carry over to tomorrow’s game.

  176. Reading says:

    Make that five straight innings.

  177. Maz in Iowa says:

    6 freakin pitches?Cmon guys!

  178. Steelag70 says:

    RAISE IT!!!!!

  179. JRay3 says:

And behind Walker and Alvarez blasts, a fine outing from Cole and the Bucs bullpen going into lock down mode the Buccos take another road series and there was nooooooo doubt about it.

10-4 in last 14, 6-3 on the road swing, chance for sweep tomorrow with Liriano on the bump.

    Go Bucs!

  180. Baywatch says:

    Alright!!

  181. It’s good to see the Pirates win their first road series in awhile, considering how badly they’d been doing away from home previously this season. And now, hopefully, Liriano will wrap it up with a win tomorrow night, and then, maybe they can be successful against the Brewers at home this weekend.

  182. Maz in Iowa says:

Almost seemed like both teams just wanted to get the game over in the last couple innings.
